Abstract:Abstract Child-welfare-involved youth may lack protective social bonds that could reduce their risk of substance use. We investigated whether caregiver, school, or peer bonds predict distinct patterns of substance use among child-welfare-involved youth. The sample included 720 participants in the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being II. Latent class analysis (LCA) and the three-step approach to incorporate indicator variables onto the latent classes were used. We found the following classes: (1) severe polysubstance use; (2) moderate polysubstance use; and (3) low use. Youth bonded to primary caregivers were less likely to be severe polysubstance drug users, but caregiver bonds did not protect against moderate polysubstance use. School bonds protected against severe polysubstance and moderate polysubstance. Youth bonded to deviant peers were more likely to be in the severe polysubstance use and moderate polysubstance use classes. Interventions targeting child-welfare-involved youth need to account for social bonds’ effect on substance use.

Abstract:The Nd-doped cuprate La2-y-xNdySrxCuO4 displays a first-order phase transition at T-d (= 74 K for x = 0.10, y = 0.60) to a low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase. A magnetic field H applied II the a-axis leads to an increase in Td, whereas Td is decreased when H \\ c. The field couples to the LTO-LTT instability in an anisotropic way that is not understood Related anisotropic effects are observed in the uniform susceptibility and the in-plane magnetoresistance.
Dynamic Parallel Spin Stripes from the 1/8 anomaly to the End of Superconductivity in La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

Abstract:We have carried out new neutron spectroscopic measurements on single crystals of La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ from 0.12 to 0.26 using time-of-flight techniques. These measurements allow us to follow the evolution of parallel spin stripe fluctuations with energies less than 33 meV, from x=0.12 to 0.26. Samples at these hole-doping levels are known to display static (on the neutron scattering time scale) parallel spin stripes at low temperature, with onset temperatures and intensities which decrease rapidly with increasing x. Nonetheless, we report remarkably similar dynamic spectral weight for the corresponding dynamic parallel spin stripes, between 5 meV to 33 meV, from the 1/8 anomaly near x=0.12, to optimal doping near x=0.19 to the quantum critical point for the pseudogap phase near x=0.24, and finally to the approximate end of superconductivity near x=0.26. This observed dynamic magnetic spectral weight is structured in energy with a peak near 17 meV at all dopings studied. Earlier neutron and resonant x-ray scattering measurements on related cuprate superconductors have reported both a disappearance with increasing doping of magnetic fluctuations at ($\pi$, $\pi$) wavevectors characterizing parallel spin stripe structures, and persistant paramagnon scattering away from this wavevector, respectively. Our new results on La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ from 0.12 < x <0.26 clearly show persistent parallel spin stripe fluctuations at and around at ($\pi$, $\pi$), and across the full range of doping studied. These results are also compared to recent theory. Together with a rapidly declining x-dependence to the static parallel spin stripe order, the persistent parallel spin stripe fluctuations show a remarkable similarity to the expectations of a quantum spin glass, random t-J model, recently introduced to describe strong local correlations in cuprates.

Structural effect on the static spin and charge correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

Abstract:We report the results of elastic neutron scattering measurements performed on 1/8-hole doped La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals with {\it x}=0.05, 0.06, 0.075 and 0.085. In the low-temperature less-orthorhombic (LTLO, {\it Pccn} symmetry) phase, the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) wavevectors were found to tilt in a low-symmetric direction with one-dimensional anisotropy in the CuO$_{2}$ plane, while they were aligned along the high-symmetry axis in the low-temperature tetragonal (LTT, {\it P}4$_2$/{\it ncm} symmetry) phase. The coincident direction of two wavevectors suggests a close relation between CDW and SDW orders. The SDW wavevector systematically deviates from the Cu-O bond direction in the LTLO phase upon Sr substitution and the tilt angle in the LTLO phase is smaller than that in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase (LTO, {\it B}{\it mab} symmetry) with comparable in-plane orthorhombic distortion. These results demonstrate a correlation between the corrugated pattern of CuO$_{2}$ plane and the deviations.

Abstract:We present time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of La2-xBaxCuO4 (LBCO) with 0 <= x <= 0.095 and La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) with x = 0.08 and 0.11. This range of dopings spans much of the phase diagram relevant to high-temperature cuprate superconductivity, ranging from insulating, three-dimensional commensurate long-range antiferromagnetic order, for x <= 0.02, to two-dimensional (2D) incommensurate antiferromagnetism coexisting with superconductivity for x >= 0.05. Previous work on lightly doped LBCO with x = 0.035 showed a clear enhancement of the inelastic scattering coincident with the low-energy crossings of the highly dispersive spin excitations and quasi-2D optic phonons. The present work extends these measurements across the phase diagram and shows this enhancement to be a common feature to this family of layered quantum magnets. Furthermore, we show that the low-temperature, low-energy magnetic spectral weight is substantially larger for samples with nonsuperconducting ground states relative to any of the samples with superconducting ground states. Spin gaps, suppression of low-energy magnetic spectral weight as a function of decreasing temperature, are observed in both superconducting LBCO and LSCO samples, consistent with previous observations for superconducting LSCO.
Contouring 1- and 2-manifolds in arbitrary dimensions

Abstract:We propose an algorithm for contouring k-manifolds (k = 1,2) embedded in an arbitrary n-dimensional space. We assume (n -k) geometric constraints are represented as polynomial equations in n variables. The common zero-set of these (n-k) equations is computed as an 1-or 2-manifold, respectively, for k = 1 or k = 2. In the case of 1-manifolds, this framework is a generalization of techniques for contouring regular intersection curves between two implicitly-defined surfaces of the form F(x,y,z) = G(x,y,z) = 0. Moreover, in the case of 2-manifolds, the algorithm is similar to techniques for contouring iso-surfaces of the form F(x, y, z) = 0, where n = 3 and only one (=3 -2) constraint is provided. By extending the Dual Contouring technique to higher dimensions, we approximate the simultaneous zero-set as a piecewise linear 1or 2-manifold. There are numerous applications for this technique in data visualization and modeling, including the processing of various geometric constraints for freeform objects, and the computation of convex hulls, bisectors, blendings and sweeps.

Abstract:We report $^{139}$La and $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic and quadrupole resonance (NMR/NQR) studies in an underdoped La$_{1.93}$Sr$_{0.07}$CuO$_4$ single crystal, focusing on the $^{139}$La NMR in the normal state. We demonstrate that the local structural distortions in the low-temperature orthorhombic structure cause the tilting of the direction of the electric field gradient (EFG) at the nuclei from the c axis, resulting in two NMR central transition spectra at both the $^{139}$La and $^{63}$Cu nuclei in an external field. Taking into account the tilt angle of the EFG, the temperature dependence of the $^{139}$La spectra allowed us to determine the $^{139}$La Knight shift and the structural order parameter. The angle and temperature dependence of the $^{139}$La spectrum is in perfect agreement with the macroscopic average structure and proves a displacive transition. The $^{139}$La nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates, $T_1^{-1}$, suggest that La$_{1.93}$Sr$_{0.07}$CuO$_4$ undergoes a gradual change to a temperature-independent paramagnetic regime in the high temperature region. Both the spectra and $T_1^{-1}$ of the $^{139}$La as a function of temperature reveal a sharp anomaly around $T_S=387(1)$ K, implying a first-order-like structural transition, and a dramatic change below ~70 K arising from collective glassy spin freezing.

Abstract:Cu-63 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies at room temperature were reported on six Nd-doped La2-xSrxCuO4 samples. The NQR spectrum for La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 has a different line shape compared with those from the other samples, which is similar to the case of the insulating La2CuO4. This may suggest that the stripe fluctuations at such a special Nd and Sr doping fall into the frequency window of Cu-63 NQR. The spectra of the other five samples were analysed by pairs of Cu-63 and Cu-65 Gaussians at A and B sites. The full width of half-maxim (FWHM) for Cu-63 at B sites is anomalously large for La1.45Nd0.4Sr0.15CuO4, which was considered to be related to the stripe fluctuations.

Abstract:We have investigated the optical conductivity of the spin/charge "stripe" order phase in La1.6 − xNd0.4SrxCuO4 in the microwave and the infrared regions. The in-plane conductivity is appreciably suppressed with respect to the spectrum for the Nd-free crystal over a wide frequency range of up to 8000 cm−1. The suppression persists even at room temperature, indicating a strong fluctuation of this order. Nevertheless, the spectrum is basically metallic without showing a gap associated with charge order. It was found that the magnetic penetration depth is extremely long in the superconducting state which coexists with the static spin/charge order.

Abstract:We probe the collective magnetic modes of La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO) and underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) by momentum resolved Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L_3$ edge. In LCO the single magnon dispersion measured by RIXS coincides with the one determined by inelastic neutron scattering. For LSCO the spin dynamics shows a branch dispersing up to $\sim$400 meV coexisting with a branch at lower energy. Only the latter has been observed with neutrons so far and is considered a key signature of doped cuprates. The presence of the high-energy branch indicates that LSCO is in a dynamic inhomogeneous spin state.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples LaBa2Cu3−xCo x O y (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) were synthesized by solid state reaction method. The structure, phonon vibration, conduction, and spin correlation were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra, resistivity, and electron spin resonance. It is found that there are orthorhombic–tetragonal and tetragonal–orthorhombic structural transitions with Co doping, and the conduction behavior changes from metallic to semiconducting. With the increase of Co content, the Cu(1)—O(1) phonon mode around 531 cm−1 softens, the Cu(2)—O(2) phonon mode around 657 cm−1 hardens, and the Cu(1)—O(4) mode around 583 cm−1 is nearly unchanged. The Cu2+ spins tend to localize with Co doping. The changes in structure, phonon vibration, and spin correlation with Co doping are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:We have measured the thermal conductivity in the $ab$-plane of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x =$ 0.10, 0.115, 0.13) in magnetic fields up to 14 T parallel to the c-axis and also parallel to the $ab$-plane. By the application of magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis, the thermal conductivity has been found to be suppressed at low temperatures below the temperature $T_\kappa$ which is located above the superconducting transition temperature and is almost independent of the magnitude of the magnetic field. The suppression is marked in $x =$ 0.10 and 0.13, while it is small in $x =$ 0.115. Furthermore, no suppression is observed in the 1 % Zn-substituted La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{0.99}$Zn$_{0.01}$O$_4$ with $x =$ 0.115. Taking into account the experimental results that the temperature dependence of the relative reduction of the thermal conductivity is quite similar to the temperature dependence of the intensity of the incommensurate magnetic Bragg peak corresponding to the static stripe order and that the Zn substitution tends to stabilize the static order, it is concluded that the suppression of the thermal conductivity in magnetic fields is attributed to the development of the static stripe order. The present results suggest that the field-induced magnetic order in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ originates from the pinning of the dynamical stripes of spins and holes by vortex cores.

Abstract:We report on transient reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr measurements from the colossal magnetoresistance compounds La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO), La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO), and Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) as a function of temperature and magnetic field. In LCMO and LSMO, an unusually slow (similar to 1 mu s) carrier relaxation component is revealed in the transient reflectivity traces. The component disappears as the transition temperature is approached from below. This slow decay process is attributed to spin-lattice relaxation of carriers in localized states and shows a close relationship with the spectral weight near the Fermi surface. The attribution is further supported by our pump-probe magneto-optical Kerr measurements. In addition to the clear observation of magnetic precessions, a long-lived exponentially decaying background reflects the spin-related relaxation of photoexcited electrons. In contrast to manganites, the temperature dependence of transient reflectivity is negligible, although there is a significant change in transient Kerr rotation in SFMO. Our results show that the dynamics of charge, spin, and lattice are strongly correlated with each other in the manganites, but the spin degree of freedom is thermally insulated from the electron and lattice systems.

Abstract:Optical spectra of the spin/charge stripe order phase, La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 (LNSC) have been investigated for x = 0.10, 0.12, 0.15 and 0.20, compared with the spectra of Nd-free (La,Sr)(2)CuO4. For E//c, a sharp plasma edge for superconducting carriers cannot be observed in LNSC within our covering frequency range down to 40 cm(-1). This implies that the stripe charge order strongly suppresses the superfluid density and/or the Josephson coupling strength between the layers. For E//ab, optical conductivity is substantially suppressed over a wide frequency range even at room temperature, while no appreciable spectral change takes place at the structural (LTO-LTT) phase transition temperature T-d2 The former fact is indicative of a strong stripe fluctuation well above T-d2 The metallic omega- and T-dependencies of optical conductivity in LNSC are in contrast to the low omega conductivity at de and in the microwave region, which exhibits a weak semiconducting T-dependence below T-d2 This suggests that some disorder effect dominates in the stripe charge dynamics in the very low omega region.
NQR study on Nd doped La2−xSrxCuO4

Abstract:63Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) experiments were preformed on six Nd-doped La2−xSrxCuO4 samples. The NQR spectra show a systematic evolution with various Nd and/or Sr doping, except for La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4. A completely different NQR spectrum was observed for the sample, which is similar to that for undoped insulator La2CuO4. It is speculated that a static stripe phase on the NQR time scale μs may be responsible for the anomalous spectrum.

Abstract:Spin fluctuations and the local spin susceptibility in isovalently Zn-substituted La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$ ($x=0.25$, $y\approx0.01$) are measured via inelastic neutron scattering techniques. As Zn$^{2+}$ is substituted onto the Cu$^{2+}$-sites, an anomalous enhancement of the local spin susceptibility $\chi^{\prime\prime}(\omega)$ appears due to the emergence of a commensurate antiferromagnetic excitation centered at wave vector \textbf{Q}$=(\pi, \pi, 0)$ that coexists with the known incommensurate SDW excitations at \textbf{Q}$_{HK}=(\pi\pm\delta,\pi), (\pi,\pi\pm\delta)$. Our results support a picture of Zn-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations appearing through a local staggered polarization of Cu$^{2+}$-spins, and the simultaneous suppression of T$_c$ as AF fluctuations are slowed in proximity to Zn-impurities suggests the continued importance of high energy AF fluctuations at the far overdoped edge of superconductivity in the cuprates.

Abstract:We report on time-resolved pump-probe measurements of spin-dependent dynamics in strained Nd0.67Sr0.33MnO3 thin films grown on three different substrates: LaAlO3 (001), SrTiO3 (001), and NdGaO3 (110). The temperature dependence of the long-lived spin-relaxation component is represented well by a power-law decay of long-range correlations, clearly showing the transition from quasilong-range ferromagnetic order to a disordered paramagnetic phase. The "disordering" temperature, T-M, where the intermediate phase of quasilong-range order appears, varies according to the creation of static-distortion waves under different strain forces. Abstract:We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin fluctuations in Sr$_{1.8}$La$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$, where Lanthanum doping triggers a Lifshitz transition by pushing the van Hove singularity in the $\gamma$ band to the Fermi energy. Strong spin fluctuations emerge at an incommensurate wave vector $\mathbf{Q}_{ic} = (0.3,0.3)$, corresponding to the nesting vector between $\alpha$ and $\beta$ Fermi sheets. The incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations shift toward $(0.25,0.25)$ with increasing energy up to ${\sim}110$ meV. By contrast, scatterings near the ferromagnetic wave vectors $\mathbf{Q} = (1,0)$ and $(1,1)$ remain featureless at all energies. This contradicts the weak-coupling perspective that suggests a sharp enhancement of ferromagnetic susceptibility due to the divergence of density of states in the associated $\gamma$ band. Our findings imply that ferromagnetic fluctuations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and related materials do not fit into the weak-coupling paradigm, but instead are quasi-local fluctuations induced by Hund's coupling. This imposes significant constraints for the pairing mechanism involving spin fluctuations.

Abstract:We have measured the ab-plane resistivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ single crystals with small Sr content (x=0.052 $÷$ 0.075) between 4.2 and 300 K by using the AC Van der Pauw technique. As recently suggested by Ichikawa et al., the deviation from the linearity of the $\rho_{\mathrm{ab}}(T)$ curve starting at a temperature T$_{\mathrm{ch}}$ can be interpreted as due to a progressive slowing down of the fluctuations of pre-formed charge stripes. An electronic transition of the stripes to a more ordered phase could instead be responsible for some very sharp anomalies present in the $\rho_{\mathrm{ab}}(T)$ of superconducting samples just above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$.

Abstract:A detailed study of the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra of the high-Tc cuprates based on the Fermi liquid (FL) picture is given. We focus on the issue of the transformation between the commensurate and incommensurate (IC) excitation driven by frequency or temperature. For La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO), the condition of small Δ(0)/vF can simultaneously reproduce the always existing IC peaks in the superconducting (SC) and normal states, and the always fixed location at temperature or frequency change. For YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO), a moderate Δ(0)/vF and proximity of the van Hove singularity (vHS) at M=(0,π) to the Fermi level can reproduce the frequency- and temperature-driven shifting IC peaks in the SC state, and the vanishing of the IC peak in the normal state. We address the conditional peak shifting behavior to a refined consideration on the nesting effect which is previously overlook. As a result, both the well documented data on LSCO and the recent data on YBCO (on YBa2Cu3O6.7 by [Phys. Rev. Lett 83 (1999) 608] and YBa2Cu3O6.85 by [Science 288 (2000) 1234]) can be reasonably reconciled within a FL picture. We also point out that the one-dimensional-like data by [Condmat/9811100; Nature 404 (2000) 729] on a detwinned and more underdoped sample YBa2Cu3O6.6 could be due to a gap anisotropy effect originally discussed by [Phys. Rev. B 53 (1996) 5889], and we proceed to suggest a way of clarifying it.
