Abstract:We calculate self-consistently the local density of states (LDOS) of a d-wave superconductor considering the scattering of the quasiparticles off randomly distributed impurities and off externally induced vortices. The impurities and the vortices are randomly distributed but the vortices are preferably located near the impurities. The increase of either the impurity repulsive potential or the mpurity density only affects the density of states (DOS) slightly. The dominant effect is due to the vortex scattering. The results for the LDOS agree qualitatively with experimental results considering that most vortices are pinned at the impurities.

Abstract:The presence of massive, compact, quiescent galaxies at z>2 presents a major challenge for theoretical models of galaxy formation and evolution. Using one of the deepest large public near-IR surveys to date, we investigate in detail the correlations between star formation and galaxy structural parameters (size, stellar mass, and surface density) from z=2 to the present. At all redshifts, massive quiescent galaxies (i.e. those with little or no star formation) occupy the extreme high end of the surface density distribution and follow a tight mass-size correlation, while star-forming galaxies show a broad range of both densities and sizes. Conversely, galaxies with the highest surface densities comprise a nearly-homogeneous population with little or no ongoing star formation, while less dense galaxies exhibit high star-formation rates and varying levels of dust obscuration. Both the sizes and surface densities of quiescent galaxies evolve strongly from z=2-0; we parameterize this evolution for both populations with simple power law functions and present best-fit parameters for comparison to future theoretical models. Higher-mass quiescent galaxies undergo faster structural evolution, consistent with previous results. Interestingly, star-forming galaxies' sizes and densities evolve at rates similar to those of quiescent galaxies. It is therefore possible that the same physical processes drive the structural evolution of both populations, suggesting that "dry mergers" may not be the sole culprit in this size evolution.

Abstract:The majority of stars in today's Universe reside within spheroids, which are bulges of spiral galaxies and elliptical galaxies. Their formation is still an unsolved problem. Infrared/submm-bright galaxies at high redshifts have long been suspected to be related to spheroids formation. Proving this connection has been hampered so far by heavy dust obscuration when focusing on their stellar emission or by methodologies and limited signal-to-noise ratios when looking at submm wavelengths. Here we show that spheroids are directly generated by star formation within the cores of highly luminous starburst galaxies in the distant Universe. This follows from the ALMA submillimeter surface brightness profiles which deviate significantly from those of exponential disks, and from the skewed-high axis-ratio distribution. The majority of these galaxies are fully triaxial rather than flat disks: the ratio of the shortest to the longest of their three axes is half, on average, and increases with spatial compactness. These observations, supported by simulations, reveal a cosmologically relevant pathway for in-situ spheroid formation through starbursts likely preferentially triggered by interactions (and mergers) acting on galaxies fed by non-co-planar gas accretion streams.

Abstract:We develop a model for the origins and redshift evolution of spheroid scaling relations. We consider spheroid sizes, velocity dispersions, masses, profile shapes (Sersic indices), and black hole (BH) masses, and their related scalings. Our approach combines advantages of observational constraints in halo occupation models and hydrodynamic merger simulations. This allows us to separate the relative roles of dissipation, dry mergers, formation time, and progenitor evolution, and identify their effects on scalings at each redshift. Dissipation is the most important factor determining spheroid sizes and fundamental plane (FP) scalings, and can account for the FP tilt and differences between disk and spheroid scalings. Because disks at high-z have higher gas fractions, mergers are more gas-rich, yielding more compact spheroids. This predicts mass-dependent evolution in spheroid sizes, in agreement with observations. This relates to subtle evolution in the FP, important to studies that assume a fixed intrinsic FP. This also predicts mild evolution in BH-host correlations, towards larger BHs at higher z. Dry mergers are significant, but only for massive systems which form early: they form compact, but undergo dry mergers (consistent with observations) such that their sizes at later times are similar to spheroids of similar mass formed more recently. We model descendants of observed compact high-z spheroids: most will become cores of BCGs, with sizes, velocity dispersions, and BH masses consistent with observations, but we identify a fraction that might survive to z=0 intact.

Abstract:We re‐examine the assembly history of field spheroidals as a potentially powerful discriminant of galaxy formation scenarios. Whereas monolithic collapse and hierarchical, merger‐driven, models suggest radically different histories for these galaxies, neither the theoretical predictions nor the observational data for field galaxies have been sufficiently definitive for precise conclusions to be drawn. In this paper we discuss whether more detailed considerations involving the resolved internal colours of morphologically selected galaxies of known redshift from the Hubble Space Telescope can assist in making progress. With the limited resolved data currently available in the Hubble Deep Fields, we find popular hierarchical models produce as many spheroidals with highly inhomogeneous colours as observed, but they underpredict the proportion of homogeneous, passive objects at redshifts z≃ 1. This suggests that while the star formation rate in spheroidals at low redshifts (z≲ 1) is predicted correctly, the formation rate at higher redshifts is underestimated. Although more detailed tests of galaxy evolution inevitably involve additional complexities compared to the classical tests based on counts and integrated colours alone, we argue the time is right for embarking on more detailed comparisons, particularly in view of the resolved data expected for large numbers of distant spheroidals from the recently commissioned Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope.

Abstract:The evolution of galaxies depends on their masses and local environments; understanding when and how environmental quenching starts to operate remains a challenge. Furthermore, studies of the high-redshift regime have been limited to massive cluster members, owing to sensitivity limits or small fields of view when the sensitivity is sufficient, intrinsically biasing the picture of cluster evolution. In this work, we use stacking to investigate the average star formation history of more than 10,000 groups and clusters drawn from the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey 2. Our analysis covers near-ultraviolet to far-infrared wavelengths, for galaxy overdensities at 0.5 ≲ z ≲ 2.54. We employ spectral energy distribution fitting to measure the specific star formation rates (sSFRs) in four annular apertures with radii between 0 and 1000 kpc. At z ≳ 1.6, the average sSFR evolves similarly to the field in both the core and the cluster outskirts. Between z ̄ = 1.60 and z ̄ = 1.35 , the sSFR in the core drops sharply, and it continues to fall relative to the field sSFR at lower redshifts. We interpret this change as evidence that the impact of environmental quenching dramatically increases at z ∼ 1.5, with the short time span of the transition suggesting that the environmental quenching mechanism dominant at this redshift operates on a rapid timescale. We find indications that the sSFR may decrease with increasing host halo mass, but lower-scatter mass tracers than the signal-to-noise ratio are needed to confirm this relationship.

Abstract:Galaxy clusters provide powerful laboratories for the study of galaxy evolution, particularly the origin of correlations of morphology and star formation rate (SFR) with density. We construct visible to MIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of cluster galaxies and use them to measure stellar masses and SFRs in eight low redshift clusters, which we examine as a function of environment. A partial correlation analysis indicates that SFR depends strongly on R/R200 (>99.9% confidence) and is independent of projected local density at fixed radius. SFR also shows no residual dependence on stellar mass. We therefore conclude that interactions with the intra-cluster medium drive the evolution of SFRs in cluster galaxies. A merged sample of galaxies from the five most complete clusters shows <SFR>\propto(R/R200)^(1.3+/-0.7) for galaxies with R/R200<0.4. A decline in the fraction of SFGs toward the cluster center contributes most of this effect, but it is accompanied by a reduction in SFRs among star-forming galaxies (SFGs) near the cluster center. The increase in the fraction of SFGs toward larger R/R200 and the isolation of SFGs with reduced SFRs near the cluster center are consistent with ram pressure stripping as the mechanism to truncate star formation in galaxy clusters. We conclude that stripping drives the properties of SFGs over the range of radii we examine. We also find that galaxies near the cluster center are more massive than galaxies farther out in the cluster at ~3.5\sigma, which suggests that cluster galaxies experience dynamical relaxation during the course of their evolution.
Integrated Stellar Populations of Bulges: First Results

Abstract:We present first results from an on-going survey of the stellar populations of the bulges and inner disks of spirals at various points along the Hubble sequence. In particular, we are investigating the hypotheses that bulges of early-type spirals are akin to (and may in fact originally have been) intermediate-luminosity ellipticals while bulges of late-type spirals are formed from dynamical instabilities in their disks. Absorption-line spectroscopy of the central regions of Sa–Sd spirals is combined with stellar population models to determine integrated mean ages and metallicities. These ages and metallicities are used to investigate stellar population differences both between the bulges and inner disks of these spirals and between bulges and ellipticals in an attempt to place observational constraints on the formation mechanisms of spiral bulges. Introduction Current thinking considers two major pathways to the formation of spiral bulges. Simplistically, either the bulge formed before the disk (‘bulge-first’, e.g. van den Bosch 1998, and these proceedings), or formed from the disk (‘disk-first’, e.g. Combes & Sanders 1981). Previous studies have shown that bulges of big-bulge spirals (like M31) share at least some stellar population properties with mid-sized elliptical galaxies. They fall along the Dn−σ0 relation (Dressler 1987) and the Fundamental Plane (Bender, Burstein & Faber 1992). Moreover, Jablonka et al. (1996) and Idiart et al. (1996) find that bulges of spirals (as late as Sc) fall along the Mg−σ0 relation defined by early-type galaxies, suggesting that bulges share a mass-metallicity relation with elliptical galaxies.
Ancient stellar populations in the outskirts of nearby grand-design spirals: Investigation of their star formation histories

Abstract:The main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) is the tight relation between the galaxy stellar mass and its star formation rate (SFR) and was observed up to z ~ 6. The MS relation can be used as a reference for understanding the differences among galaxies, characterised by different rates of stellar production (starbursts, SFGs, and passive galaxies), and those inside a galaxy made up of different components (bulge, disk, and halo). To investigate peculiar features found in our sample galaxies, we focus here on their star formation history (SFH). We performed a spectral energy distribution fitting procedure that accounted for the energetic balance between UV and far-IR radiation on a sample of eight nearby face-on spiral galaxies from the DustPedia sample. This approach allowed us to study the spatially resolved MS of the sample and to recover the past SFH. By exploiting the BAGPIPES code, we constrained the SFHs for each galaxy with a delayed exponentially declining model to derive their mass-weighted age (tMW). A central old region (tMW up to~7Gyr, consistent with the presence of a bulge for various systems) is followed by younger regions in which the disks are still forming stars (tMW~4Gyr). At larger distances, tMW increases mildly in general. Strikingly, in two galaxies (NGC4321 and NGC5194), we found a steep increase in tMW that reached levels similar to those of the bulge. These old stellar populations in the very galaxy outskirts are unexpected. We discuss their potential origin by considering the different gas phases of the source with the most prominent quenched ring, NGC4321, and argue for two main possibilities: 1) some environmental effect (e.g. starvation) or 2) the circumgalactic medium of sources outside of high-density clusters might have stopped to supply pristine gas to the galaxy (e.g. if its specific angular moment is too high for being accreted).

Fossil Evidence for the Two-Phase Formation of Elliptical Galaxies

Abstract:Massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) have undergone dramatic structural evolution over the last 10 Gyr. A companion paper shows that nearby elliptical galaxies with M-* >= 1.3 x 10(11) M-circle dot generically contain three photometric subcomponents: a compact inner component with effective radius R-e less than or similar to 1 kpc, an intermediate-scale middle component with R-e approximate to 2.5 kpc, and an extended outer envelope with R-e approximate to 10 kpc. Here we attempt to relate these substructures with the properties of ETGs observed at higher redshifts. We find that a hypothetical structure formed from combining the inner and middle components of local ellipticals follows a strikingly tight stellar mass-size relation, one that resembles the distribution of ETGs at z approximate to 1. Outside of the central kpc, the median stellar mass surface density profiles of this composite structure agree closest with those of massive galaxies that have similar cumulative number density at 1.5 < z < 2.0 within the uncertainty. We propose that the central substructures in nearby ellipticals are the evolutionary descendants of the "red nuggets" formed under highly dissipative ("wet") conditions at high redshifts, as envisioned in the initial stages of the two-phase formation scenario recently advocated for massive galaxies. Subsequent accretion, plausibly through dissipationless ("dry") minor mergers, builds the outer regions of the galaxy identified as the outer envelope in our decomposition. The large scatter exhibited by this component on the stellar mass-size plane testifies to the stochastic nature of the accretion events.

Abstract:Controlling a neuroprosthesis requires learning a novel input-output transformation; however, how subjects incorporate this into limb control remains obscure. To elucidate the underling mechanisms, we investigated the motor adaptation process to a novel artificial recurrent connection (ARC) from a muscle to a peripheral nerve in healthy humans. In this paradigm, the ulnar nerve was electrically stimulated in proportion to the activation of the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU), which is ulnar-innervated and monosynaptically innervated from Ia afferents of the FCU, defined as the "homonymous muscle," or the palmaris longus (PL), which is not innervated by the ulnar nerve and produces similar movement to the FCU, defined as the "synergist muscle." The ARC boosted the activity of the homonymous muscle and wrist joint movement during a visually guided reaching task. Participants could control muscle activity to utilize the ARC for the volitional control of wrist joint movement and then readapt to the absence of the ARC to either input muscle. Participants reduced homonymous muscle recruitment with practice, regardless of the input muscle. However, the adaptation process in the synergist muscle was dependent on the input muscle. The activity of the synergist muscle decreased when the input was the homonymous muscle, whereas it increased when it was the synergist muscle. This reorganization of the neuromotor map, which was maintained as an aftereffect of the ARC, was observed only when the input was the synergist muscle. These findings demonstrate that the ARC induced reorganization of neuromotor map in a targeted and sustainable manner.

Abstract:Insight into the origin of bulges is saught in this review only from the properties of their stellar populations. Evidence concerning the age of the Galactic bulge stellar population is reviewed first, then the case of the bulge of M31 is discussed. The similarity of bulges and ellipticals is then illustrated, inferring that the problems of the origin of bulges and of the origin of ellipticals may well be one and the same: i.e. the origin of galactic spheroids. In this mood, the current evidence concerning the age of the bulk stellar populations of early-type galaxies is then reviewed, both for low- as well as high-redshift galaxies, and both for cluster as well as field ellipticals. All reported evidence argues for the bulk of stars in galactic spheroids having formed at high redshift, with only minor late additions and small dependence on environment. In the final, more speculative Section an attempt is made to evaluate how current formation scenarios can account for this observational evidence. The role of spheroids in the cosmic star formation and metal enrichment history is also briefly discussed. Finally, some critical questions are asked, which answers may help our further understanding of the formation and evolution of galactic spheroids.

Accelerated Structure Formation: the Early Emergence of Massive Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies

Abstract:Galaxies in the early universe appear to have grown too big too fast, assembling into massive, monolithic objects more rapidly than anticipated in the hierarchical $\Lambda$CDM structure formation paradigm. The available photometric data are consistent with there being a population of massive galaxies that form early ($z \gtrsim 10$) and quench rapidly over a short ($\lesssim 1$ Gyr) timescale, consistent with the traditional picture for the evolution of giant elliptical galaxies. Similarly, kinematic observations as a function of redshift show that massive spirals and their scaling relations were in place at early times. Explaining the early emergence of massive galaxies requires either an extremely efficient conversion of baryons into stars at $z>10$ or a more rapid assembly of baryons than anticipated in $\Lambda$CDM. The latter possibility was explicitly predicted in advance by MOND. We discuss some further predictions of MOND, such as the early emergence of clusters of galaxies and early reionization.

Abstract:We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations aimed at exploring the evolution towards energy equipartition of first- (1G) and second-generation (2G) stars in multiple-population globular clusters and how this evolution is affected by the initial differences between the spatial distributions of the two populations. Our results show that these initial differences have fundamental implications for the evolution towards energy equipartition of the two populations. We find that 2G stars, which are assumed to be initially more centrally concentrated than 1G stars, are generally characterized by a more rapid evolution towards energy equipartition. The evolution towards energy equipartition depends on the velocity dispersion component and is more rapid for the tangential velocity dispersion. The extent of the present-day differences between the degree of energy equipartition of 2G and 1G stars depends on the cluster's dynamical age and may be more significant in the tangential velocity dispersion and at intermediate distances from the cluster's center around the half-mass radius.

The Impact of Stellar Populations on the Dynamics of Merger Remnants

Abstract:Many studies and simulations suggest gas-rich mergers do not contribute significantly to the overall star-formation rate and total mass function of galaxies. The velocity dispersions (sigma) of Luminous & Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies measured using the 1.62 or 2.29 micron CO bandheads imply they will form m < m* ellipticals. Yet, sigma's obtained with the Calcium II triplet (CaT) at 0.85 micron suggest all types of mergers will form m > m* ellipticals. Presented here are recent results, based on high-resolution imaging and multi-wavelength spectroscopy, which demonstrate the dominance of a nuclear disk of Red Supergiants (RSG) or Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the near-infrared bands, where dust obscuration does not sufficiently block their signatures. The presence of these stars severely biases the dynamical mass. At I-band, where dust can sufficiently block RSG or AGB stars, LIRGs populate the Fundamental Plane over a large dynamic range and are virtually indistinguishable from elliptical galaxies.

Abstract:There are at least three reasons for being interested in galaxies at high redshifts that formed most of their stars quite quickly early in the history of the Universe: (1) the ages of their stellar populations can potentially place interesting constraints on cosmological parameters and on the epoch of the earliest major episodes of star formation, (2) their morphologies may provide important clues to the history and mechanisms of spheroid formation, and (3) they are likely to identify the regions of highest overdensity at a given redshift. We describe a systematic search for galaxies at z ~ 1.5 having essentially pure old stellar populations, with little or no recent star formation. Our approach is to apply a "photometric sieve" to the fields of quasars near this redshift, looking for companion objects with the expected spectral-energy distributions. Follow-up observations on two of the fields having candidates discovered by this technique are described.
