Abstract:We present the discovery of an isolated compact group of galaxies that is extremely dense (median projected galaxy separation: 6.9 kpc), has a very low velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm 2D}$ = 67 km s$^{-1}$), and where all observed members show emission lines and are morphologically disturbed. These properties, together with the lack of spirals and the presence of a prominent tidal tail make this group one of the most evolved compact groups.

Abstract:We have identified a new group of galaxies, CG J0247+44.9, at low Galactic latitude (l=143.64 deg, b=-13.29 deg), which satisfies Hickson's criteria (Hickson 1997) for Compact Groups (CGs). Our group consists of six members, two of which are in close interaction (IRAS 02443+4437). We present here optical photometry (BVRI) and low resolution spectroscopy of the individual galaxies and investigate the global properties of the group. Our morphological analysis reveals that two out of the six objects are lenticular galaxies. The others are spirals showing emission lines in their spectra through which we could classify them as a starburst galaxy (the spiral member of the IRAS 02443+4437 close pair), a Seyfert 2, a LINER and a weak H II galaxy. Since the S0/Sa is the prevailing morphology for the galaxies of this group, which is also characterized by a short crossing time and a relatively high velocity dispersion, we suggest that CG J0247+44.9 is a dynamically old compact group.

Abstract:Compact groups of galaxies (CGs) show members with morphological disturbances, mainly products of galaxy-galaxy interactions, thus making them ideal systems to study galaxy evolution, in high-density environment. To understand how this environment affects the properties of galaxies, we select a sample of 340 CGs in the Stripe 82 region, for a total of 1083 galaxies, and a sample of 2281 field galaxies as a control sample. By performing a multi-wavelength morphological fitting process using S-PLUS data, we divide our sample into early-type (ETG), late-type (LTG), and transition galaxies using the r-band Sérsic index and the colour (u-r). We find a bimodal distribution in the plane of the effective radius-Sérsic index, where a secondary "peculiar" galaxy population of smaller and more compact galaxies is found in CGs, which is not observed in the control sample. This indicates that galaxies are undergoing a morphological transformation in CGs. In addition, we find significant statistical differences in the distribution of specific Star Formation Rate (sSFR) when we compare both environments for LTGs and ETGs. We also find a higher fraction of quenched galaxies and a lower median sSFR in CGs than in the control sample, suggesting the existence of environmental effects favoring the cessation of star formation, regardless of galaxy type. Our results support the notion that CGs promote morphological and physical transformations, highlighting their potential as ideal systems for galaxy pre-processing.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a variational formulation to study the singular evolution equations that govern the dynamics of surface modulations on crystals below the roughening temperature. The basic idea of the formulation is to expand the surface shape in terms of a complete set of basis functions and to use a variational principle equivalent to the continuum evolution equations to obtain coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the expansion coefficients. Unlike several earlier approaches that rely on ad hoc regularization procedures to handle the singularities in the evolution equations, the only inputs required in the present approach are the orientation dependent surface energies and the diffusion constants. The method is applied to study the morphological equilibration of patterned unidirectional and bidirectional sinusoidal modulations on semiconductor surfaces through surface diffusion.

Past and Future of CG J1720-67.8: Constraints from Observations and Models

Abstract:We discuss the evolution of the peculiar, nearby (z = 0.045), compact galaxy group CG J1720-67.8, by interpreting a large amount of observational information on the basis of our recent results from spectrophotometric evolutionary synthesis models and new N-body/SPH simulations. The group, that is composed of two spiral galaxies with a mass ratio approximately 4:1 and an S0 galaxy in a particularly compact configuration, is undergoing an active pre-merging phase. Several tidal features are signposts of the complex dynamics of the system. We suggest that the observed structure of the tidal features can be explained only if all three galaxies are involved in a strong interaction process.

Abstract:Dynamical analysis of compact groups provides important tests of models of compact group formation and evolution. By compiling 2066 redshifts from FLWO/FAST, from the literature, and from SDSS DR12 in the fields of compact groups in \citet{McC09}, we construct the largest sample of compact groups with complete spectroscopic redshifts in the redshift range $0.01 < z < 0.22$. This large redshift sample shows that the interloper fraction in the \citet{McC09} compact group candidates is $\sim 42\%$. A secure sample of 332 compact groups includes 192 groups with four or more member galaxies and 140 groups with three members. The fraction of early-type galaxies in these compact groups is 62\%, slightly higher than for the original Hickson compact groups. The velocity dispersions of early- and late-type galaxies in compact groups change little with groupcentric radius; the radii sampled are less than $100 ~h^{-1}$ kpc, smaller than the radii typically sampled by members of massive clusters of galaxies. The physical properties of our sample compact groups include size, number density, velocity dispersion, and local environment; these properties slightly differ from those derived for the original Hickson compact groups and for the DPOSS II compact groups. Differences result from subtle differences in the way the group candidates were originally selected. The space density of the compact groups changes little with redshift over the range covered by this sample. The approximate constancy of the space density for this sample is a potential constraint on the evolution of compact groups on a few Gigayear timescale.

Abstract:We report the discovery of a rare isolated group of five dwarf galaxies located at z = 0.0086 ($D$ = 36 Mpc). All member galaxies are star-forming, blue, and gas-rich with $g-r$ indices ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 mag, and two of them show signs of ongoing mutual interaction. The most massive member of the group has a stellar mass that is half of the Small Magellanic Cloud stellar mass, and the median stellar mass of the group members is 7.87 $\times$ 10$^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$. The derived total dynamical mass of the group is $M_{\rm dyn}$ = 6.02$\times$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$, whereas its total baryonic mass (stellar + HI) is 2.6$\times$10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$, which gives us the dynamical to baryonic mass ratio of 23. Interestingly, all galaxies found in the group are aligned along a straight line in the plane of the sky. The observed spatial extent of the member galaxies is 154 kpc, and their relative line-of-sight velocity span is within 75 km s$^{-1}$. Using the spatially resolved optical spectra provided by DESI EDR, we find that three group members share a common rotational direction. With these unique properties of the group and its member galaxies, we discuss the possible importance of such a system in the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxy groups and in testing the theory of large-scale structure formation.

Abstract:We have obtained high spectral resolution (R = 45900) Fabry-Perot velocity maps of the Hickson Compact Group HCG 31 in order to revisit the important problem of the merger nature of the central object A+C and to derive the internal kinematics of the candidate tidal dwarf galaxies in this group. Our main findings are: (1) double kinematic components are present throughout the main body of A+C, which strongly suggests that this complex is an ongoing merger (2) regions $A2$ and E, to the east and south of complex A+C, present rotation patterns with velocity amplitudes of $\sim 25 km s^{-1}$ and they counterrotate with respect to A+C, (3) region F, which was previously thought to be the best example of a tidal dwarf galaxy in HCG 31, presents no rotation and negligible internal velocity dispersion, as is also the case for region $A1$. HCG 31 presents an undergoing merger in its center (A+C) and it is likely that it has suffered additional perturbations due to interactions with the nearby galaxies B, G and Q.

Abstract:Compact group galaxies often appear unaffected by their unusually dense environment. Closer examination can, however, reveal the subtle, cumulative effects of multiple galaxy interactions. Hickson Compact Group (HCG) 59 is an excellent example of this situation. We present a photometric study of this group in the optical (HST), infrared (Spitzer) and X-ray (Chandra) regimes aimed at characterizing the star formation and nuclear activity in its constituent galaxies and intra-group medium. We associate five dwarf galaxies with the group and update the velocity dispersion, leading to an increase in the dynamical mass of the group of up to a factor of 10 (to 2.8e13 Msun), and a subsequent revision of its evolutionary stage. Star formation is proceeding at a level consistent with the morphological types of the four main galaxies, of which two are star-forming and the other two quiescent. Unlike in some other compact groups, star-forming complexes across HCG 59 closely follow mass-radius scaling relations typical of nearby galaxies. In contrast, the ancient globular cluster populations in galaxies HCG 59A and B show intriguing irregularities, and two extragalactic HII regions are found just west of B. We age-date a faint stellar stream in the intra-group medium at ~1 Gyr to examine recent interactions. We detect a likely low-luminosity AGN in HCG 59A by its ~10e40 erg/s X-ray emission; the active nucleus rather than star formation can account for the UV+IR SED. We discuss the implications of our findings in the context of galaxy evolution in dense environments.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of photometrically-selected compact groups (CGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In this paper, the fourth in a series, we focus on understanding the characteristics of our observed CG sample with particular attention paid to quantifying and removing contamination from projected foreground or background galaxies. Based on a simple comparison of pairwise redshift likelihoods, we find that approximately half of compact groups in the parent sample contain one or more projected (interloping) members; our final clean sample contains 4566 galaxies in 1086 compact groups. We show that half of the remaining CGs are associated with rich groups (or clusters), i.e. they are embedded sub-structure. The other half have spatial distributions and number-density profiles consistent with the interpretation that they are either independently distributed structures within the field (i.e. they are isolated) or associated with relatively poor structures. Comparisons of late-type and red-sequence fractions in radial annuli show that galaxies around apparently isolated compact groups resemble the field population by 300 to 500 kpc from the group centre. In contrast, the galaxy population surrounding embedded compact groups appears to remain distinct from the field out beyond 1 to 2 Mpc, consistent with results for rich groups. We take this as additional evidence that the observed distinction between compact groups, i.e. isolated vs. embedded, is a separation between different host environments.

The Occurrence of Compact Groups of Galaxies Through Cosmic Time

Abstract:We use the outputs of a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation run on the Millennium Simulation to investigate the prevalence of 3D compact groups (CGs) of galaxies from $z = 11$ to 0. Our publicly available code identifies CGs using the 3D galaxy number density, the mass ratio of secondary+tertiary to the primary member, mass density in a surrounding shell, the relative velocities of candidate CG members, and a minimum CG membership of three. We adopt "default" values for the first three criteria, representing the observed population of Hickson CGs at $z = 0$. The percentage of non-dwarf galaxies ($M > 5 \times 10^{8}h^{-1}\ M_{\odot}$) in CGs peaks near $z \sim 2$ for the default set, and between $z \sim 1 - 3$ for other parameter sets. This percentage declines rapidly at higher redshifts ($z \gtrsim 4$), consistent with the galaxy population as a whole being dominated by low-mass galaxies excluded from this analysis. According to the most liberal criteria, $\lesssim 3\%$ of non-dwarf galaxies are members of CGs at the redshift where the CG population peaks. Our default criteria result in a population of CGs at $z < 0.03$ with number densities and sizes consistent with Hickson CGs. Tracking identified CG galaxies and merger products to $z = 0$, we find that $\lesssim 16\%$ of non-dwarf galaxies have been CG members at some point in their history. Intriguingly, the great majority ($96\%$) of $z = 2$ CGs have merged to a single galaxy by $z= 0$. There is a discrepancy in the velocity dispersions of Millennium Simulation CGs compared to those in observed CGs, which remains unresolved.

Extented ionized gas emission and kinematics of the compact group galaxies in HCG 16: Signatures of mergers

Abstract:We report on kinematic observations of Ha emission line from four late-type galaxies of Hickson Compact Group 16 (H16a,b,c and d) obtained with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer and samplings of 16 km/s and 1". The velocity fields show kinematic peculiarities for three of the four galaxies: H16b, c and d. Misalignments between the kinematic and photometric axes of gas and stellar components (H16b,c,d), double gas systems (H16c) and severe warping of the kinematic major axis (H16b and c) were some of the peculiarities detected. We conclude that major merger events have taken place in at least two of the galaxies group. H16c and d, based on their significant kinematic peculiarities, their double nuclei and high infrared luminosities. Their Ha gas content is strongly spatially concentred - H16d contains a peculiar bar-like structure confined to the inner $\sim$ 1 h^-1 kpc region. These observations are in agreement with predictions of simulations, namely that the gas flows towards the galaxy nucleus during mergers, forms bars and fuel the central activity. Galaxy H16b, and Sb galaxy, also presents some of the kinematic evidences for past accretion events. Its gas content, however, is very spare, limiting our ability to find other kinematic merging indicators, if they are present. We find that isolated mergers, i.e., they show an anormorphous morphology and no signs of tidal tails. Tidal arms and tails formed during the mergers may have been stripped by the group potential (Barnes & Hernquist 1992) ar alternatively they may have never been formed. Our observations suggest that HCG 16 may be a young compact group in formation throught the merging of close-by objects in a dense environment.

Compact groups of galaxies in GAMA -- Probing the densest minor systems at intermediate redshifts

Abstract:[Abridged] Over the years, several compact group catalogues have been built using different methods, but most of them are not deep enough to go beyond the very local universe with a high level of redshift completeness. We build statistically reliable samples of compact groups to study the influence of their inner extreme environment at intermediate redshifts. We adopted the GAMA redshift survey as a parent catalogue, complemented with galaxies from the SDSS, to identify compact groups using Hickson-like criteria. We explored the parameter space to perform several identifications: we reduced the maximum galaxy separation in the line-of-sight to 500 km/s and we implemented different magnitude ranges to define membership. For comparison, we used control samples extracted from a catalogue of loose groups to contrast properties with the compact groups. We build five considerably large compact group samples, ranging from more than 400 up to ~2400 systems, and maximum redshifts from 0.2 to 0.4. The overall properties of each sample are in agreement with previous findings. Compact groups tend to have a larger fraction of quenched galaxies than control loose groups, mainly for low stellar mass galaxies in compact groups with small crossing times. In addition, ~45% of compact groups are embedded in loose galaxy systems and display the highest compactness, lowest crossing times and brightest first-ranked galaxies compared to compact groups considered non-embedded or isolated. There is almost no evolution of compact group properties with redshift. Our results confirm previous findings that postulate compact groups as one of the suitable places to study the suppression of the star formation rate in galaxies primarily due to galaxy interactions. These new samples will be valuable to deepen the analysis of these peculiar galaxy systems in a redshift regime poorly explored so far.

Abstract:Quiescent galaxies having more compact morphologies than star-forming galaxies has been a consistent result in the field of galaxy evolution. What is not clear is at what point this divergence happens, i.e. when do quiescent galaxies become compact, and how big of a role does the progenitor effect play in this result? Here we aim to model the morphological and star-formation histories of high redshift (0.8 $<$ z $<$ 1.65) massive galaxies (log(M/M$\odot$) $>$ 10.2) with stellar population fits using HST/WFC3 G102 and G141 grism spectra plus photometry from the CLEAR (CANDELS Lyman-alpha Emission at Reionization) survey, constraining the star-formation histories for a sample of $\sim$ 400 massive galaxies using flexible star-formation histories. We develop a novel approach to classifying galaxies by their formation activity in a way that highlights the green valley population, by modeling the specific star-formation rate distributions as a function of redshift and deriving the probability that a galaxy is quiescent (PQ). Using PQ and our flexible star-formation histories we outline the evolutionary paths of our galaxies in relation to stellar mass, Sersic index, $R_{eff}$, and stellar mass surface density. We find that galaxies show no appreciable stellar mass growth after entering the green valley (a net decrease of 4$\%$) while their stellar mass surface densities increase by $\sim$ 0.25 dex. Therefore galaxies are becoming compact during the green valley and this is due to increases in Sersic index and decreases in $R_{eff}$.

Abstract:Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies are extreme environments for morphological transformations and the cessation of star formation. Our objective is to understand the dynamics of CGs and how their surrounding environment impacts galaxy properties. We selected a sample of 340 CGs in the Stripe 82 region, totaling 1083 galaxies, and a control sample of 2281 field galaxies. We find that at least 27\% of our sample of CGs are part of major structures, i.e. non-isolated CGs. We find a bimodality in the effective radius ($R_e$)-Sérsic index ($n$) plane for all transition galaxies (those with $(u-r) > 2.3$ and $n<2.5$) in CGs. Additionally, transition galaxies in isolated CGs populate more densely the $R_e-n$ plane for $n < 1.75$. In contrast, transition galaxies in non-isolated CGs have smoothly increasing $n$ values, suggesting these galaxies have already suffered morphological transformation, and primarily contribute to the distribution of more compact galaxies in the $R_e-n$ plane for all transition galaxies in CGs. We also find significant differences in the specific star-formation rate (sSFR) distribution between the late-type galaxies (LTGs) ($(u-r)<2.3$ and $n< 2.5$) in non-isolated CGs and the same type of galaxies in the control sample, suggesting that the evolution of LTGs differs in non-isolated CGs. Early-type galaxies ($(u-r)>2.3$ and $n>2.5$) and transition galaxies in non-isolated CGs have lower sSFR values and a higher fraction of quenched galaxies, compared to those in isolated CGs. Based on our results, we propose an evolutionary scenario where the major structures in which the CGs are embedded accelerate the morphological transformations of their members. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the larger structures in which CGs may be located, when analysing the properties of their galaxy, as this can significantly affect the evolution of CGs and their galaxies.

Galaxy Interactions in Compact Groups I : The Galactic Winds of HCG16

Abstract:Using the WiFeS integral field spectrograph, we have undertaken a series of observations of star-forming galaxies in Compact Groups. In this first paper dedicated to the project, we present the analysis of the spiral galaxy NGC838, a member of the Hickson Compact Group 16, and of its galactic wind. Our observations reveal that the wind forms an asymmetric, bipolar, rotating structure, powered by a nuclear starburst. Emission line ratio diagnostics indicate that photoionization is the dominant excitation mechanism at the base of the wind. Mixing from slow shocks (up to 20%) increases further out along the outflow axis. The asymmetry of the wind is most likely caused by one of the two lobes of the wind bubble bursting out of its HI envelope, as indicated by line ratios and radial velocity maps. The characteristics of this galactic wind suggest that it is caught early (a few Myr) in the wind evolution sequence. The wind is also quite different to the galactic wind in the partner galaxy NGC839 which contains a symmetric, shock-excited wind. Assuming that both galaxies have similar interaction histories, the two different winds must be a consequence of the intrinsic properties of NGC838 and NGC839 and their starbursts.

Abstract:We present Keck-I MOSFIRE spectroscopy in the Y and H bands of GDN-8231, a massive, compact, star-forming galaxy (SFG) at a redshift $z\sim1.7$. Its spectrum reveals both H$_{\alpha}$ and [NII] emission lines and strong Balmer absorption lines. The H$_{\alpha}$ and Spitzer MIPS 24 $\mu$m fluxes are both weak, thus indicating a low star formation rate of SFR $\lesssim5-10$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. This, added to a relatively young age of $\sim700$ Myr measured from the absorption lines, provides the first direct evidence for a distant galaxy being caught in the act of rapidly shutting down its star formation. Such quenching allows GDN-8231 to become a compact, quiescent galaxy, similar to 3 other galaxies in our sample, by $z\sim1.5$. Moreover, the color profile of GDN-8231 shows a bluer center, consistent with the predictions of recent simulations for an early phase of inside-out quenching. Its line-of-sight velocity dispersion for the gas, $\sigma^{\rm{gas}}_{\!_{\rm LOS}}=127\pm32$ km s$^{-1}$, is nearly 40% smaller than that of its stars, $\sigma^{\star}_{\!_{\rm LOS}}=215\pm35$ km s$^{-1}$. High-resolution hydro-simulations of galaxies explain such apparently colder gas kinematics of up to a factor of $\sim1.5$ with rotating disks being viewed at different inclinations and/or centrally concentrated star-forming regions. A clear prediction is that their compact, quiescent descendants preserve some remnant rotation from their star-forming progenitors.

Abstract:We report the identification of two galaxy overdensities at $z\sim5.7$ in the sightline of the galaxy cluster Abell 2744. These overdensities consist of 25 and 17 member galaxies, spectroscopically confirmed with JWST NIRSpec/MSA and NIRCam/WFSS. Each overdensity has a total stellar mass of $\sim2\times10^{10} M_\odot$ and a star formation rate of $\sim200 M_\odot$/yr within a central region of radius $R=2$ Mpc (physical). The sensitive PRISM spectra allow us to identify six galaxies that show weak Ha+[NII] emissions within the overdensities ($27\pm6\%$), whereas the fraction of such galaxies is found significantly lower ($6\pm2\%$) in field samples of the equivalent redshift range. These weak emission line galaxies, dubbed as wELGs, exhibit a strong continuum break at $4000$AA rest-frame, a characteristic feature of evolved stellar populations. The high observed fraction of wELGs in the two overdensities is consistent with the idea that high-density environments are an ideal site where galaxies can accelerate their evolutionary pace compared to field analogs. Our study pinpoints an early onset of environmental effects, already important within one billion years after the Big Bang, and provides a complementary perspective on the emergence of quenched, massive galaxies at lower redshifts. Potential contributions from black hole accretion feedback to the reduction of star formation activity are discussed, but the connection to the local environments remains unclear.

Abstract:We present a study on structures and physical properties of massive ($M_* >10^{10} M_{\sun} $) compact galaxies at $1.0<z<2.0$ in five 3D--{\it HST}/CANDELS fields. Compared with the extended star-forming galaxies (eSFGs), compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) are found to have the lower level of star formation, and mainly distribute in the quiescent region of the {\it UVJ} diagram. The distributions of dust attenuation and S{é}rsic index support that the progenitors of cQGs are cSFGs, and cSFGs are at a transitional phase between eSFGs and cQGs. The prevalence of X-ray selected AGNs ($\sim 28\%$) is confirmed in the cSFGs at $1<z<2$ which indicates that the violent gas-rich processes such as merger and disk instability could drive the structure to be more compact, and trigger both star formation and black hole growth in the central regions. Our results support the "two-step" scenario that the cSFGs at $1<z<2$ are the intermediate population after compaction but before a quick quenching. Our analysis of parametric and nonparametric morphologies shows that cQGs (eQGs) are more concentrated and have less substructures than cSFGs (eSFGs), and quenching and compactness should be associated with each other. The cSFGs at $1.5<z<2$ ($1<z<1.5$) prefer to be in higher (lower) density environment, similar as cQGs (eSFGs). It suggests that merger or strong interaction might be the main driving mechanism of compaction at higher redshifts, whereas the disk instability of individual galaxies might play a more important role on the formation of cSFGs at lower redshifts.

Abstract:Zw~049.057 is a moderate mass, dusty, early-type galaxy that hosts a powerful compact obscured nucleus (CON, L$_{FIR,CON} \geq$10$^{11}$~L$_{\odot}$). The resolution of HST enabled measurements of the stellar light distribution and characterization of dust features. Zw~049.057 is inclined with a prominent three zone disk; the R$\approx$ 1kpc star forming inner dusty disk contains molecular gas, a main disk with less dust and an older stellar population, and a newly detected outer stellar region at R$>$6~kpc with circular isophotes. Previously unknown polar dust lanes are signatures of a past minor merger that could have warped the outer disk to near face-on. Dust transmission measurements provide lower limit gas mass estimates for dust features. An extended region with moderate optical depth and M$\geq$ 2$\times$10$^8$~M$_{\odot}$ obscures the central 2~kpc. Optical spectra show strong interstellar Na~D absorption with a constant velocity across the main disk, likely arising in this extraplanar medium. Opacity measurements of the two linear dust features, pillars, give a total mass of $\geq$10$^6$~M$_{\odot}$, flow rates of $\geq$2~M$_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$, and few Myr flow times. Dust pillars are associated with the CON and are visible signs of its role in driving large-scale feedback. Our assessments of feedback processes suggest gas recycling sustains the CON. However, radiation pressure driven mass loss and efficient star formation must be avoided for the AGN to retain sufficient gas over its lifespan to produce substantial mass growth of the central black hole.
