Abstract:It is shown that only two four-neutrino schemes are compatible with the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments. These two schemes have a mass spectrum composed of two pairs of neutrinos with close masses separated by the "LSND gap" of the order of 1 eV.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Volume 39, Issue 07, 7 March 2024. We study a neutrino mass model with [math] discrete flavor symmetry using a type-I seesaw mechanism. The inclusion of extra flavons in our model leads to deviations from the exact tribimaximal mixing pattern resulting in a nonzero [math] consistent with the recent experimental results and a sum rule for light neutrino masses is also obtained. In this framework, a connection is established among the neutrino mixing angles-reactor mixing angle ([math]), solar mixing angle ([math]), and atmospheric mixing angle ([math]). This model also allows us a prediction of Dirac CP-phase and Jarlskog parameter [math]. The octant of the atmospheric mixing angle [math] occupies the lower octant. Our model prefers Normal Hierarchy (NH) than Inverted Hierarchy (IH). We use the parameter space of our model of neutrino masses to study the neutrinoless double beta decay parameter [math].

Abstract:We study neutrino masses and mixing in the context of flavor models with A4 symmetry, three scalar doublets in the triplet representation, and three lepton families. We show that there is no representation assignment that yields a dimension-five mass operator consistent with experiment. We then consider a type-I seesaw with three heavy right-handed neutrinos, explaining in detail why it fails, and showing with a numerical example that agreement with the present neutrino oscillation data can be recovered with the inclusion of dimension-three heavy neutrino mass terms that break softly the A4 symmetry.

Abstract:The correspondence of the results obtained in the Neutrino-4 experiment with the results of the NEOS, DANSS, STEREO, PROSPECT experiments at reactors, the MiniBooNE, LSND, MicroBoone experiments at accelerators, the IceCube experiment and the BEST experiment with a ${}^{51}\text{Cr}$ neutrino source is analyzed. The agreement between the results of the Neutrino-4 experiment, the BEST experiment and the gallium anomaly on mixing angel is discussed. The disagreement between the results of the above-mentioned direct experiments with the results of the reactor anomaly, as well as with the limitations from solar and cosmological data, is discussed. It is shown that the results of the above-mentioned direct experiments on the search for sterile neutrinos and IceCube experiment do not contradict the Neutrino-4 experiment within the framework of the 3+1 neutrino model at the available experimental accuracy. The sterile neutrino parameters from the Neutrino-4 and BEST experiments make it possible to estimate the sterile neutrino mass $m_4 = (2.70 \pm 0.22)\text{eV}$ and the effective mass of the electron neutrino $m_{4\nu_e} = (0.82 \pm 0.21)\text{eV}$. The matrix with absolute values of the 3 + 1 neutrino model mixing parameters and the mixing scheme are presented.

Abstract:The neutrino mass matrix has remnant CP symmetry expressed in terms of the lepton mixing matrix, and vice versa the remnant CP transformations allow us to reconstruct the mixing matrix. We study the scenario that all four remnant CP transformations are preserved by the neutrino mass matrix. The most general parametrization of remnant CP transformations is presented. The lepton mixing matrix is completely fixed by the remnant CP, and its explicit form is derived. The necessary and sufficient condition for conserved Dirac CP violating phase is found. If the Klein four flavor symmetry generated by the postulated remnant CP transformations arises from a finite flavor symmetry group, the phenomenologically viable lepton flavor mixing would be the trimaximal pattern, both Dirac CP phase delta(CP) and Majorana phase alpha(31) are either 0 or pi while another Majorana phase alpha(21) is a rational multiple of pi. These general results are confirmed to be true in the case that the finite flavor symmetry group is Delta(6n(2)).
Lepton Mixing Predictions from S_4 in the Tri-Direct CP Approach to Two Right-handed Neutrino Models

Abstract:We perform an exhaustive analysis of all possible breaking patterns arising from S-4 (sic) H-cp in a new tridirect CP approach to the minimal seesaw model with two right-handed neutrinos, and construct a realistic flavor model along these lines. According to this approach, separate residual flavor and CP symmetries persist in the charged lepton, "atmospheric" and "solar" right-handed neutrino sectors, i.e., we have three symmetry sectors rather than the usual two of the semidirect CP approach (charged leptons and neutrinos). Following the tridirect CP approach, we find 26 kinds of independent phenomenologically interesting mixing patterns. Eight of them predict a normal ordering (NO) neutrino mass spectrum and the other 18 predict an inverted ordering (IO) neutrino mass spectrum. For each phenomenologically interesting mixing pattern, the corresponding predictions for the PontecorvoMaki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix, the lepton mixing parameters, the neutrino masses and the effective mass in neutrinoless double beta decay are given in a model-independent way. One breaking pattern with an NO spectrum and two breaking patterns with IO spectra correspond to form dominance. We find that the lepton mixing matrices of three kinds of breaking patterns with NO spectra and one form dominance breaking pattern with an IO spectrum preserve the first column of the tribimaximal mixing matrix, i.e., yield a TM1 mixing matrix.

Abstract:We propose a unique lepton mixing scheme and its association with an exact hierarchy-philic neutrino mass matrix texture in the light of Type-I+Type-II seesaw mechanism under the framework of $A_4 \times Z_{10}$ discrete flavour symmetry. The proposed model successfully predicts the normal ordering of neutrino masses and the two Majorana phases. Additionally, the analysis extends to the effective Majorana neutrino mass, in the context of neutrinoless double beta\,($0\nu\beta\beta$)-decay.

Abstract:Modular symmetries offer a dynamic approach to understanding the flavor structure of leptonic mixing. Using the modular A4 flavor symmetry integrated in a type-II seesaw, we propose a simple and minimalistic model that restricts the neutrino oscillation parameter space and, most importantly, introduces a sum rule in the physical neutrino masses. When combined with the mass squared differences observed in neutrino oscillations, this sum rule determines the absolute neutrino mass scale. This has significant implications for cosmology, neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, and direct neutrino mass measurements. Abstract:With the educated, interested non-specialist as the target audience, we overview what is known and not known about contemporary neutrino physics. Theory tells us that neutrinos are the second-most common particle in the Universe, behind only the quanta of radiation called photons. Almost a trillion neutrinos per second enter each human eyeball, and yet we do not see them; these neutrinos, in roughly equal numbers, are emanations from our Sun and relics of the hot "big bang" era of the early Universe. Much of what we know about neutrinos, and hope to learn in the future, is derived from a unique feature of neutrinos -- "oscillation" among neutrino "flavor" types. An initial neutrino flavor will in general oscillate into another flavor as the neutrino propagates in space and time. Oscillations are a quantum mechanical phenomenon. One of the wonders of neutrinos is that their quantum mechanics may be observed over large distances, even astronomically large. We begin this article with neutrino phenomenology in terms of masses and mixing angles, including the matter-antimatter asymmetric "phase" that appears with three neutrino types. Next we venture into neutrino oscillations. We conclude with a discussion of model-building for the neutrino masses and mixings. Throughout this article, attention is devoted to the 2012 result that the "small" neutrino mixing angle is not so small, after all.

Abstract:A multiscalar and nonrenormalizable $B-L$ extension of the standard model (SM) with $S_4$ symmetry which successfully explains the recent observed neutrino oscillation data is proposed. The tiny neutrino masses and their hierarchies are generated via the type-I seesaw mechanism. The model reproduces the recent experiments of neutrino mixing angles and Dirac CP violating phase in which the atmospheric angle $(\theta_{23})$ and the reactor angle $(\theta_{13})$ get the best-fit values while the solar angle $(\theta_{12})$ and Dirac CP violating phase ($\delta $) belong to $3\, \si $ range of the best-fit value for normal hierarchy (NH). For inverted hierarchy (IH), $\theta_{13}$ gets the best-fit value and $\theta_{23}$ together with $\de $ belongs to $1\, \si $ range while $\theta_{12}$ belongs to $3\, \si $ range of the best-fit value. The effective neutrino masses are predicted to be $\langle m_{ee}\rangle=6.81 \,\, \mbox{meV}$ for NH and $\langle m_{ee}\rangle=48.48\,\, \mbox{meV}$ for IH being in good agreement with the most recent experimental data.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Volume 39, Issue 09, 21 March 2024. The binary tetrahedral group ([math]) has provided the most successful flavor symmetry in understanding simultaneously the three mixing angles both for quarks in the CKM matrix and for neutrinos in the PMNS matrix. One prediction, invariant under leptonic CP violation, relates the atmospheric and reactor neutrino mixings [math] and [math], respectively. We study sedulously this relation using the latest neutrino data. It is natural to focus on the frustrating experimental octant ambiguity of [math]. We conclude that the flavor symmetry requires that [math] is in the second octant [math], not in the first one [math], and eagerly await experimental confirmation of this prediction.

Abstract:We propose a new mixing pattern for neutrinos with a nonzero mixing angle theta(13). Under a simple form, it agrees well with current neutrino oscillation data and displays a number of intriguing features including the mu-tau interchange symmetry vertical bar U-mu i vertical bar = vertical bar U-tau i vertical bar, (i = 1, 2, 3), the trimaximal mixing vertical bar U-e2 vertical bar = vertical bar U-mu 2 vertical bar = vertical bar U-tau 2 vertical bar = 1 root 3, the self-complementarity relation theta(1) + theta(3) = 45 degrees, together with the maximal Dirac CP violation as a prediction.

Abstract:In the last years we have learnt a lot about neutrino masses and mixings. Neutrinos are not all massless but their masses are very small. Probably masses are small because neutrinos are Majorana particles with masses inversely proportional to the large scale M of lepton number (L) violation, which turns out to be compatible with the GUT scale. We have understood that there is no contradiction between large neutrino mixings and small quark mixings, even in the context of GUTs and that neutrino masses fit well in the SUSY GUT picture. Out of equilibrium decays with CP and L violation of heavy RH neutrinos can produce a B-L asymmetry, then converted near the weak scale by instantons into an amount of B asymmetry compatible with observations (baryogenesis via leptogenesis). It appears that active neutrinos are not a significant component of Dark Matter in the Universe. A long list of models have been formulated over the years to understand neutrino masses and mixings. With the continuous improvement of the data most of the models have been discarded by experiment. The surviving models still span a wide range going from a maximum of symmetry, with discrete non-abelian flavour groups, to the opposite extreme of anarchy.

Abstract:We propose two schemes for the lepton mixing matrix U=Ul†Uν, where U=Ul refers to the charged sector, and Uν denotes the neutrino diagonalization matrix. We assume Uν to be CP conserving and its three angles to be connected with the Cabibbo angle in a simple manner. CP violation arises solely from the Ul, assumed to have the CKM form, Ul≃VCKM, suggested by unification. Oscillation parameters depend on a single parameter, leading to narrow ranges for the “solar” and “accelerator” angles θ12 and θ23, as well as for the CP phase, predicted as δCP∼±1.3π.
Modular $A_4$ symmetry in 3+1 active-sterile neutrino masses and mixings

Abstract:Motivated by the significance of modular symmetry in generating neutrino masses and flavor mixings, we apply the modular $A_4$ symmetry in a 3+1 scheme of active-sterile neutrino mixings. Neutrino oscillation observables in the 3$\sigma$ range are successfully reproduced through the vacuum expectation value of the modulus $\tau$ in the Inverted Hierarchy(IH) only, whereas Normal Hierarchy (NH) is ruled out. We also study phenomenologies related to the effective neutrino masses $m_{\beta}$ in tritium beta decay and $m_{\beta\beta}$ in neutrinoless double beta decay. Mixings between active neutrinos and eV scale sterile neutrino are analyzed in detail. The model also predicts the Dirac CP-violating phase $\delta_{CP}$ and Majonara phases $\alpha$ and $\beta$. The best-fit values of the neutrino mixing angles and ratios of two mass-squared differences are determined using minimum $\chi^2$ analysis. The best-fit values of the neutrino oscillation observables are predicted as $\sin^2\theta_{23}=0.566,$ $\sin^2\theta_{12}=0.307,$ $ \sin^2\theta_{13}=0.023$ and $r = 0.172$. The Dirac and Majorana phases are observed at $\delta_{CP}=350.19^o,\ \alpha=355.75^o$ and $\beta=333.10^o$. We also observe that the predictions of effective neutrino mass parameters in the 3+1 scheme are significantly different from the three neutrino paradigm.

Abstract:We study the mixing of different kind of fields (scalar in 0+1D, scalar in 3+1D, fermion in 3+1D) treating the mixing term as an interaction. To this aim, we employ the usual perturbative series in the interaction picture. We find that expression for flavor changing probability exhibits corrections with respect to the usual quantum mechanical (e.g. neutrino) oscillation formula, in agreement with the result previously obtained in the non-perturbative flavor Fock space approach.
