Abstract:A massive star can explode in powerful supernova (SN) and form a neutron star, but it may also collapse directly into a black hole. Understanding and predicting the final fate of such stars is increasingly important, for instance, in the context of gravitational-wave astronomy. The interior mixing of stars (in general) and convective boundary mixing (in particular) remain some of the largest uncertainties in their evolution. Here, we investigate the influence of convective boundary mixing on the pre-SN structure and explosion properties of massive stars. Using the 1D stellar evolution code MESA, we modeled single, non-rotating stars of solar metallicity, with initial masses of 5 - 70 M-circle dot and convective core step-overshooting of 0.05 - 0.50 pressure scale heights. Stars were evolved until the onset of iron core collapse and the pre-SN models were exploded using a parametric, semi-analytic SN code. We used the compactness parameter to describe the interior structure of stars at core collapse and we found a pronounced peak in compactness at carbon-oxygen core masses of M-CO approximate to 7 M-circle dot, along with generally high compactness at M-CO greater than or similar to 14 M-circle dot. Larger convective core overshooting will shift the location of the compactness peak by 1 - 2 M-circle dot to higher M-CO. These core masses correspond to initial masses of 24 M-circle dot (19 M-circle dot) and greater than or similar to 40 M-circle dot (greater than or similar to 30 M-circle dot), respectively, in models with the lowest (highest) convective core overshooting parameter. In both high-compactness regimes, stars are found to collapse into black holes. As the luminosity of the pre-supernova progenitor is determined by M-CO, we predict black hole formation for progenitors with luminosities of 5.35 <= log(L/L-circle dot) <= 5.50 and log(L/L-circle dot) >= 5.80. The luminosity range of black hole formation from stars in the compactness peak is in good agreement with the observed luminosity of the red supergiant star N6946 BH1, which disappeared without a bright supernova, indicating that it had likely collapsed into a black hole. While some of our models in the luminosity range of log(L/L-circle dot) = 5.1 - 5.5 do indeed collapse to form black holes, this does not fully explain the lack of observed SN IIP progenitors at these luminosities. This case specifically refers to the "missing red supergiant" problem. The amount of convective boundary mixing also affects the wind mass loss of stars, such that the lowest black hole masses are 15 M-circle dot and 10 M-circle dot in our models, with the lowest and highest convective core overshooting parameter, respectively. The compactness parameter, central specific entropy, and iron core mass describe a qualitatively similar landscape as a function of M-CO, and we find that entropy is a particularly good predictor of the neutron-star masses in our models. We find no correlation between the explosion energy, kick velocity, and nickel mass production with the convective core overshooting value, but we do see a tight relation with the compactness parameter. Furthermore, we show how convective core overshooting affects the pre-supernova locations of stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD) and the plateau luminosity and duration of SN IIP light curves.
Impacts of Rotation on Three-dimensional Hydrodynamics of Core-collapse Supernovae

Abstract:We perform a series of simplified numerical experiments to explore how rotation impacts on the three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamics of core-collapse supernovae. For the sake of our systematic study, we employ a light-bulb scheme to trigger explosions and a three-flavor neutrino leakage scheme to treat deleptonization effects and neutrino losses from proto-neutron star interior. Using a 15 solar mass progenitor, we compute thirty models in 3D with a wide variety of initial angular momentum and light-bulb neutrino luminosity. We find that the rotation can help onset of neutrino-driven explosions for the models in which the initial angular momentum is matched to that obtained in recent stellar evolutionary calculations (0.3-3 rad/s at the center). For the models with larger initial angular momentum, the shock surface deforms to be more oblate due to larger centrifugal force. This makes not only a gain region more concentrated around the equatorial plane, but also the mass in the gain region bigger. As a result, buoyant bubbles tend to be coherently formed and rise in the equatorial region, which pushes the revived shock ever larger radii until a global explosion is triggered. We find that these are the main reasons that the preferred direction of explosion in 3D rotating models is often perpendicular to the spin axis, which is in sharp contrast to the polar explosions around the axis that was obtained in previous 2D simulations.

The rotational shear in pre-collapse cores of massive stars

Abstract:We evolve stellar models to study the rotational profiles of the pre-explosion cores of single massive stars that are progenitors of core collapse supernovae (CCSNe), and find large rotational shear above the iron core that might play an important role in the jet feedback explosion mechanism by amplifying magnetic fields before and after collapse. Initial masses of 15 Mo and 30 Mo and various values of the initial rotation velocity are considered, as well as a reduced mass-loss rate along the evolution and the effect of core-envelope coupling through magnetic fields. We find that the rotation profiles just before core collapse differ between models, but share the following properties. (1) There are narrow zones of very large rotational shear adjacent to convective zones. (2) The rotation rate of the inner core is slower than required to form a Keplerian accretion disk. (3) The outer part of the core and the envelope have non-negligible specific angular momentum compared to the last stable orbit around a black hole (BH). Our results suggest the feasibility of magnetic field amplification which might aid a jet-driven explosion leaving behind a neutron star. Alternatively, if the inner core fails in exploding the star, an accretion disk from the outer parts of the core might form and lead to a jet-driven CCSN which leaves behind a BH.

The Influence of Stellar Rotation in Binary Systems on Core-Collapse Supernova Progenitors and Multi-messenger Signals

Abstract:The detailed structure of core-collapse supernova progenitors is crucial for studying supernova explosion engines and the corresponding multimessenger signals. In this paper, we investigate the influence of stellar rotation on binary systems consisting of a 30 solar mass donor star and a 20 solar mass accretor using the MESA stellar evolution code. We find that through mass transfer in binary systems, fast-rotating red- and blue-supergiant progenitors can be formed within a certain range of initial orbital periods, albeit the correlation is not linear. We also find that even with the same initial mass ratio of the binary system, the resulting final masses of the collapsars, the iron core masses, the compactness parameters, and the final rotational rates can vary widely and are sensitive to the initial orbital periods. For instance, the progenitors with strong convection form a thinner Si-shell and a wider O-shell compared to those in single-star systems. In addition, we conduct two-dimensional self-consistent core-collapse supernova simulations with neutrino transport for these rotating progenitors derived from binary stellar evolution. We find that the neutrino and gravitational-wave signatures of these binary progenitors could exhibit significant variations. Progenitors with larger compactness parameters produce more massive proto-neutron stars, have higher mass-accretion rates, and emit brighter neutrino luminosity and louder gravitational emissions. Finally, we observe stellar-mass black hole formation in some of our failed exploding models.

3D Simulations of Magnetoconvection in a Rapidly Rotating Supernova Progenitor

Abstract:We present a first 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of oxygen, neon and carbon shell burning in a rapidly rotating 16 M_sun core-collapse supernova progenitor. We also run a purely hydrodynamic simulation for comparison. After 180s (15 and 7 convective turnovers respectively), the magnetic fields in the oxygen and neon shells achieve saturation at 10^{11}G and 5 x 10^{10}G. The strong Maxwell stresses become comparable to the radial Reynolds stresses and eventually suppress convection. The suppression of mixing by convection and shear instabilities results in the depletion of fuel at the base of the burning regions, so that the burning shell eventually move outward to cooler regions, thus reducing the energy generation rate. The strong magnetic fields efficiently transport angular momentum outwards, quickly spinning down the rapidly rotating convective oxygen and neon shells and forcing them into rigid rotation. The hydrodynamic model shows complicated redistribution of angular momentum and develops regions of retrograde rotation at the base of the convective shells. We discuss implications of our results for stellar evolution and for the subsequent core-collapse supernova. The rapid redistribution of angular momentum in the MHD model casts some doubt on the possibility of retaining significant core angular momentum for explosions driven by millisecond magnetars. However, findings from multi-D models remain tentative until stellar evolution calculations can provide more consistent rotation profiles and estimates of magnetic field strengths to initialise multi-D simulations without substantial numerical transients. We also stress the need for longer simulations, resolution studies, and an investigation of non-ideal effects.

On Rapidly Rotating Magnetic Core-Collapse Supernovae

Abstract:We have analyzed the magnetic effects that may occur in rapidly rotating core collapse supernovae. We consider effects from both magnetic turbulence and the formation of magnetic bubbles. For magnetic turbulence we have made a perturbative analysis for our spherically symmetric core-collapse supernova model that incorporates the build up of magnetic field energy in the matter accreting onto the proto-neutron star shortly after collapse and bounce. This significantly modifies the pressure profile and increases the heating of the material above the proto-neutron star resulting in an explosion even in rotating stars that would not explode otherwise. Regarding magnetic bubbles we show that a model with a modest initial uniform magnetic field and uniform angular velocity of ~0.1 rad/s can form magnetic bubbles due to the very non homologous nature of the collapse. It is estimated that the buoyancy of the bubbles causes matter in the proto-neutron star to rise, carrying neutrino-rich material to the neutron-star surface. This increases the neutrino luminosity sufficiently at early times to achieve a successful neutrino-driven explosion. Both magnetic mechanisms thus provide new means for initiating a Type II core-collapse supernova.

Three Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamical Simulations of Core Collapse Supernova

Abstract:We show three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations of core collapse supernova in which the progenitor has magnetic fields inclined to the rotation axis. The simulations employed a simple empirical equation of state in which the pressure of degenerate gas is approximated by piecewise polytropes for simplicity. Neither energy loss due to neutrino is taken into account for simplicity. The simulations start from the stage of dynamical collapse of an iron core. The dynamical collapse halts at $ t $ = 189 ms by the pressure of high density gas and a proto-neutron star (PNS) forms. The evolution of PNS was followed about 40 milli-seconds in typical models. When the initial rotation is mildly fast and the initial magnetic fields are mildly strong, bipolar jets are launched from an upper atmosphere ($ r \sim 60 {\rm km} $) of the PNS. The jets are accelerated to $ \sim 3 \times 10 ^4 $ km s$^{-1}$, which is comparable to the escape velocity at the foot point. The jets are parallel to the initial rotation axis. Before the launch of the jets, magnetic fields are twisted by rotation of the PNS. The twisted magnetic fields form torus-shape multi-layers in which the azimuthal component changes alternately. The formation of magnetic multi-layers is due to the initial condition in which the magnetic fields are inclined with respect to the rotation axis. The energy of the jet depends only weakly on the initial magnetic field assumed. When the initial magnetic fields are weaker, the time lag is longer between the PNS formation and jet ejection. Powerful explosions from the collapse of rotating supermassive stars

Abstract:We perform new general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations for collapses of rotating supermassive star cores with an approximate nuclear burning up to carbon and a detailed equation of state. For all the models we investigate, the energy generation by nuclear burning plays only a minor role, leading to the formation of a black hole without a nuclear-powered explosion. For rotating models, however, the stellar explosion associated with shock heating is driven from a torus, which forms after the black hole formation. The explosion energy is up to $10^{-4}$ of the mass energy of the supermassive star cores ($\sim 10^{55}-10^{56}$ erg). We find that, even if we increase the rotational angular momentum of the progenitor, the ejecta mass saturates at $\sim 1$\% of the total mass of the initial stellar core. The average ejecta velocity also saturates at $\approx 20\%$ of the speed of light. As a result, the ejecta kinetic energy is approximately proportional to the initial mass of the supermassive star core for the rapidly rotating case. We also perform viscous hydrodynamics simulations for exploring the evolution of the remnant torus. Although the viscous heating drives an outflow from the torus, we find that its effect is subdominant in terms of the kinetic energy because of the small velocity ($\approx 0.07c$) of the ejecta component.

Abstract:We investigate the 1D stellar evolution of a 16.5 M$_{\odot}$ zero-age main-sequence star having different initial rotations. Starting from the pre-main-sequence, the models evolve up to the onset of the core collapse stage. The collapse of such a massive star can result in several kinds of energetic transients, such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), Supernovae, etc. Using the simulation parameters, we calculate their free-fall timescales when the models reach the stage of the onset of core collapse. Estimating the free-fall timescale is crucial for understanding the duration for which the central engine can be fueled, allowing us to compare the free-fall timescale with the T$_{\rm 90}$ duration of GRBs. Our results indicate that, given the constraints of the parameters and initial conditions in our models, rapidly rotating massive stars might serve as potential progenitors of Ultra-Long GRBs (T$_{\rm 90}$ $>>$ 500 sec). In contrast, the non-rotating or slowly rotating models are more prone to explode as hydrogen-rich Type IIP-like core-collapse supernovae.

Three-dimensional Magneto-hydrodynamic Simulations of Core-collapse Supernovae: I. Hydrodynamic evolution and protoneutron star properties

Abstract:We present results from three-dimensional, magnetohydrodynamic, core-collapse simulations of sixteen progenitors following until 0.5 s after bounce. We use non-rotating solar-metallicity progenitor models with zero-age main-sequence mass between 9 and 24 $M_{\odot}$. The examined progenitors cover a wide range of the compactness parameter including a peak around $23 M_{\odot}$. We find that neutrino-driven explosions occur for all models within 0.3 s after bounce. We also find that the properties of the explosions and the central remnants are well correlated with the compactness. Early shock evolution is sensitive to the mass accretion rate onto the central core, reflecting the density profile of the progenitor stars. The most powerful explosions with diagnostic explosion energy $E_{\rm exp} \sim 0.75 \times 10^{51}$ erg are obtained by 23 and 24 $M_{\odot}$ models, which have the highest compactness among the examined models. These two models exhibit spiral SASI motions during 150-230 ms after bounce preceding a runaway shock expansion and leave a rapidly rotating neutron star with spin periods $\sim 50$ ms. Our models predict the gravitational masses of the neutron star ranging between $1.22 M_{\odot}$ and $1.67 M_{\odot}$ and their spin periods 0.04-4 s. The number distribution of these values roughly matches observation. On the other hand, our models predict small hydrodynamic kick velocity (15-260 km/s), although they are still growing at the end of our simulations. Further systematic studies, including rotation and binary effects, as well as long-term simulations up to several seconds, will enable us to explore the origin of various core-collapse supernova explosions.

MHD Simulations of Core Collapse Supernovae with Cosmos++

Abstract:We performed 2D, axisymmetric, MHD simulations with Cosmos++ in order to examine the growth of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in core--collapse supernovae. We have initialized a non--rotating 15 solar mass progenitor, infused with differential rotation and poloidal magnetic fields. The collapse of the iron core is simulated with the Shen EOS, and the parametric Ye and entropy evolution. The wavelength of the unstable mode in the post--collapse environment is expected to be only ~ 200 m. In order to achieve the fine spatial resolution requirement, we employed remapping technique after the iron core has collapsed and bounced. The MRI unstable region appears near the equator and angular momentum and entropy are transported outward. Higher resolution remap run display more vigorous overturns and stronger transport of angular momentum and entropy. Our results are in agreement with the earlier work by Akiyama et al. (2003) and Obergaulinger et al. (2009).

Relativistic simulations of rotational core collapse. II. Collapse dynamics and gravitational radiation

Abstract:We have performed hydrodynamic simulations of relativistic rotational supernova core collapse in axisymmetry and have computed the gravitational radiation emitted by such an event. Details of the methodology and of the numerical code have been given in an accompanying paper. We have simulated the evolution of 26 models in both Newtonian and relativistic gravity. Our simulations show that the three different types of rotational supernova core collapse and gravitational waveforms identified in previous Newtonian simulations (regular collapse, multiple bounce collapse, and rapid collapse) are also present in relativistic gravity. However, rotational core collapse with multiple bounces is only possible in a much narrower parameter range in relativistic gravity. The relativistic models cover almost the same range of gravitational wave amplitudes and frequencies as the corresponding Newtonian ones. For a given model, relativistic gravity can cause a large increase of the characteristic signal frequency of up to a factor of five, which may have important consequences for the signal detection. The gravitational wave signals obtained in our study are within the sensitivity range of the first generation laser interferometer detectors if the source is located within the Local Group.

Simulations of Magnetically-Driven Supernova and Hypernova Explosions in the Context of Rapid Rotation

Abstract:We present here the first 2D rotating, multi-group, radiation magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) simulations of supernova core collapse, bounce, and explosion. In the context of rapid rotation, we focus on the dynamical effects of magnetic stresses and the creation and propagation of MHD jets. We find that a quasi-steady state can be quickly established after bounce, during which a well-collimated MHD jet is maintained by continuous pumping of power from the differentially rotating core. If the initial spin period of the progenitor core is $\sles$ 2 seconds, the free energy reservoir in the secularly evolving protoneutron star is adequate to power a supernova explosion, and may be enough for a hypernova. The jets are well collimated by the infalling material and magnetic hoop stresses, and maintain a small opening angle. We see evidence of sausage instabilities in the emerging jet stream. Neutrino heating is sub-dominant in the rapidly rotating models we explore, but can contribute 10$-$25% to the final explosion energy. Our simulations suggest that even in the case of modest or slow rotation, a supernova explosion might be followed by a secondary, weak MHD jet explosion, which, because of its weakness may to date have gone unnoticed in supernova debris. Furthermore, we suggest that the generation of a non-relativistic MHD precursor jet during the early protoneutron star/supernova phase is implicit in both the collapsar and "millisecond magnetar" models of GRBs. The multi-D, multi-group, rapidly rotating RMHD simulations we describe here are a start along the path towards more realistic simulations of the possible role of magnetic fields in some of Nature's most dramatic events.

The Status of Multi-Dimensional Core-Collapse Supernova Models

Abstract:Models of core-collapse supernova explosions powered by the neutrino-driven mechanism have matured considerable in recent years. Explosions at the low-mass end of the progenitor spectrum can routinely be simulated in 1D, 2D, and 3D and allow us to study supernova nucleosynthesis based on first-principle models. Results of nucleosynthesis calculations indicate that supernovae of the lowest masses could be important contributors of some lighter n-rich elements beyond iron. The explosion mechanism of more massive stars is still under investigation, although first 3D models of neutrino-driven explosions employing multi-group neutrino transport have recently become available. Together with earlier 2D models and more simplified 3D simulations, these have elucidated the interplay between neutrino heating and hydrodynamic instabilities in the post-shock region that is essential for shock revival. However, some physical ingredients may still need to be added or improved before simulations can robustly explain supernova explosions over a wide mass range. We explore possible issues that may affect the accuracy of supernova simulations, and review some of the ideas that have recently been explored as avenues to robust explosions, including uncertainties in the neutrino rates, rapid rotation, and an external forcing of non-radial fluid motions by strong seed perturbations from convective shell burning. The perturbation-aided neutrino-driven mechanism and the implications of recent 3D simulations of shell burning in supernova progenitors are discussed in detail. The efficacy of the perturbation-aided mechanism is illustrated by the first successful multi-group neutrino hydrodynamics simulation of an 18 solar mass progenitor with 3D initial conditions. We conclude with speculations about the potential impact of 3D effects on the structure of massive stars through convective boundary mixing. (abridged)

Abstract:The quest for the supernova explosion mechanism has been one of the outstanding challenges in computational astrophysics for several decades. Simulations have now progressed to a stage at which the solution appears close and neutrino and gravitational wave signals from self-consistent explosion models are becoming available. Here we focus one of the recent advances in supernova modeling, the inclusion of general relativity in multi-dimensional neutrino hydrodynamics simulations, and present the latest simulation results for an 11.2 and a 15 solar mass progenitor. We also mention 3D effects as another aspect in supernova physics awaiting further, more thorough investigation.

Abstract:We investigate the impact of strong initial magnetic fields in core-collapse supernovae of non-rotating progenitors by simulating the collapse and explosion of a 16.9 M⊙ star for a strong- and weak-field case assuming a twisted-torus field with initial central field strengths of $\mathord {\approx }10^{12}\, \mathrm{G}$ and $\mathord {\approx }10^{6}\, \mathrm{G}$. The strong-field model has been set up with a view to the fossil-field scenario for magnetar formation and emulates a pre-collapse field configuration that may occur in massive stars formed by a merger. This model undergoes shock revival already 100 ms after bounce and reaches an explosion energy of 9.3 × 1050 erg at 310 ms, in contrast to a more delayed and less energetic explosion in the weak-field model. The strong magnetic fields help trigger a neutrino-driven explosion early on, which results in a rapid rise and saturation of the explosion energy. Dynamically, the strong initial field leads to a fast build-up of magnetic fields in the gain region to 40% of kinetic equipartition and also creates sizable pre-shock ram pressure perturbations that are known to be conducive to asymmetric shock expansion. For the strong-field model, we find an extrapolated neutron star kick of $\mathord {\approx }350\, \mathrm{km}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$, a spin period of $\mathord {\approx }70\, \mathrm{ms}$, and no spin-kick alignment. The dipole field strength of the proto-neutron star is 2 × 1014 G by the end of the simulation with a declining trend. Surprisingly, the surface dipole field in the weak-field model is stronger, which argues against a straightforward connection between pre-collapse fields and the birth magnetic fields of neutron stars.

Abstract:Serotonin was administered intrathecally onto cat spinal cords to evaluate the pharmacology by which it suppresses noxiously evoked activity of wide-dynamic-range (WDR) neurons in the spinal dorsal horn. Doses of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 micrograms serotonin produced significant suppression of the mean noxiously evoked activity of WDR neurons in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord (21, 44, and 69% at 30 min, respectively). The dose-dependent effects were partially reversed by the intravenous administration of the serotonin antagonist methysergide (1 or 2 mg). Intravenous administration of the alpha 2-adrenergic antagonist yohimbine (0.5 or 1.0 mg/kg) produced a significant antagonism of the effects of serotonin. In contrast to the effects of methysergide and yohimbine, intravenous administration of naloxone or the alpha 1-antagonist corynanthine had no effect upon the suppressive effects of serotonin. The combination of low-dose serotonin and low-dose clonidine produced a supraadditive effect (30% at 30 min). These data support the concept that noradrenergic systems, possibly through an alpha 2-adrenergic mechanism, are involved in the modulation of spinal WDR neurons by serotonin.

Abstract:We present a comparison between several simulation codes designed to study the core-collapse supernova mechanism. We pay close attention to controlling the initial conditions and input physics in order to ensure a meaningful and informative comparison. Our goal is three-fold. First, we aim to demonstrate the current level of agreement between various groups studying the core-collapse supernova central engine. Second, we desire to form a strong basis for future simulation codes and methods to compare to. Lastly, we want this work to be a stepping stone for future work exploring more complex simulations of core-collapse supernovae, i.e., simulations in multiple dimensions and simulations with modern neutrino and nuclear physics. We compare the early (first ~500ms after core bounce) spherically-symmetric evolution of a 20 solar mass progenitor star from six different core-collapse supernovae codes: 3DnSNe-IDSA, AGILE-BOLTZTRAN, FLASH, F{\sc{ornax}}, GR1D, and PROMETHEUS-VERTEX. Given the diversity of neutrino transport and hydrodynamic methods employed, we find excellent agreement in many critical quantities, including the shock radius evolution and the amount of neutrino heating. Our results provide an excellent starting point from which to extend this comparison to higher dimensions and compare the development of hydrodynamic instabilities that are crucial to the supernova explosion mechanism, such as turbulence and convection.

Long-time 3D supernova simulations of non-rotating progenitors with magnetic fields

Abstract:We perform five 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) core-collapse supernova simulations for non-rotating progenitors between 9.5 $M_\odot$ and 24 $M_\odot$. Four of the five models produce explosions while one fails. The exploding models are extended to between 0.9 s and 1.6 s post-bounce to study a possible impact of magnetic fields on explosion and remnant properties. Diagnostic explosion energies grow at a similar pace as in previous non-magnetic models. They reach between 0.11 foe and 0.61 foe, but are still growing by the end of the simulations. Neutron star kicks reach no more than 300 km s$^{-1}$, and although these are also still growing, they are unlikely to be in conflict with observed pulsar velocities. Extrapolated neutron star spin periods are between 45 ms and 1.8 s, consistent with observed birth spin rates. Magnetic torques only contribute about 10% to the spin-up of the neutron star. The inclusion of magnetic fields does not provide a mechanism for spin-kick alignment in our simulations. Surface dipole fields are in the range of $10^{12}-10^{13}$ G, much smaller than the root-mean-square field strength. Different from previous simulations, magnetic fields in the gain region only reach at most O(1%) of kinetic equipartition, likely because relatively early shock revival cuts off accretion as a power source for field amplification, which appears to be driven primarily by shear flows at the bottom of the gain region.
