Abstract:We present Submillimetre Common‐User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) photometry of a sample of eight high‐redshift (2.5 ≤z < 3.5) radio quasars from two redshift surveys: the TexOx‐1000 (or TOOT) Survey and the 7C Redshift Survey (7CRS). Unlike the powerful high‐redshift radio sources observed previously in the submillimetre, these radio sources are typical of those dominating the radio luminosity density of the population. We detect just two of the TOOT/7CRS targets at 850 μm, and one of these detections is probably due to synchrotron emission rather than dust. The population represented by the other six objects is detected in a statistical sense with their average 850‐μm flux density implying that they are similar to low‐redshift, far‐infrared luminous quasars undergoing at most moderate (≲200 M⊙yr−1) starbursts. By considering all the SCUBA data available for radio sources, we conclude that positive correlations between rest‐frame far‐infrared luminosity LFIR, 151‐MHz luminosity L151 and redshift z, although likely to be present, are hard to interpret because of subtle selection and classification biases, small number statistics and uncertainties concerning synchrotron contamination and k‐correction. We argue that there is not yet any compelling evidence for significant differences in the submillimetre properties of radio‐loud and radio‐quiet quasars at high redshift.

Abstract:We derive photometric redshifts from 17-band optical to mid-infrared photometry of 78 robust radio, 24-mu m and Spitzer IRAC counterparts to 72 of the 126 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) selected at 870 mu m by LABOCA observations in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South (ECDF-S). We test the photometric redshifts of the SMGs against the extensive archival spectroscopy in the ECDF-S. The median photometric redshift of identified SMGs is z = 2.2 +/- 0.1, the standard deviation is sigma(z) = 0.9 and we identify 11 (similar to 15 per cent) high-redshift (z >= 3) SMGs. A statistical analysis of sources in the error circles of unidentified SMGs identifies a population of possible counterparts with a redshift distribution peaking at z = 2.5 +/- 0.2, which likely comprises similar to 60 per cent of the unidentified SMGs. This confirms that the bulk of the undetected SMGs are coeval with those detected in the radio/mid-infrared. We conclude that at most similar to 15 per cent of all the SMGs are below the flux limits of our IRAC observations and thus may lie at z greater than or similar to 3 and hence at most similar to 30 per cent of all SMGs have z greater than or similar to 3. We estimate that the full S-870 mu m > 4mJy SMG population has a median redshift of 2.5 +/- 0.5. In contrast to previous suggestions, we find no significant correlation between submillimetre flux and redshift. The median stellar mass of the SMGs derived from spectral energy distribution fitting is (9.1 +/- 0.5) x 10(10)M(circle dot) although we caution that the uncertainty in the star formation histories results in a factor of similar to 5 uncertainty in these stellarmasses. Using a single temperature modified blackbody fit with beta = 1.5, the median characteristic dust temperature of SMGs is 37.4 +/- 1.4K. The infrared luminosity function shows that SMGs at z = 2-3 typically have higher far-infrared luminosities and luminosity density than those at z = 1-2. This is mirrored in the evolution of the star formation rate density (SFRD) for SMGs which peaks at z similar to 2. The maximum contribution of bright SMGs to the global SFRD (similar to 5 per cent for SMGs with S-870 mu m greater than or similar to 4mJy or similar to 50 per cent extrapolated to SMGs with S-870 mu m > 1mJy) also occurs at z similar to 2.

Abstract:We present new optical and infrared photometry for a statistically complete sample of seven 1.1 mm selected sources with accurate Submillimetre Array coordinates. We determine photometric redshifts for four of the seven sources of 4.47, 4.50, 1.49 and 0.64. Of the other three sources two are undetected at optical wavelengths down to the limits of very deep Subaru and Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope images ($\sim$27 mag AB, i band) and the photometry of the remaining source is corrupted by a bright nearby galaxy. The sources with the highest redshifts are at higher redshifts than all but one of the $\sim$200 sources taken from the largest recent 850 $\mu$m surveys, which may indicate that 1.1 mm surveys are more efficient at finding sources at very high redshifts than 850 $\mu$m surveys. We investigate the evolution of the number density with redshift of our sample using a banded $V_{e}/V_{a}$ analysis and find no evidence for a redshift cutoff, although the number of sources is very small. We also perform the same analysis on a statistically complete sample of 38 galaxies selected at 850$\mu$m from the GOODS-N field and find evidence for a drop-off in the number density beyond $z\sim1$ and 2 for hot and cold dust dominated SMGs respectively, confirming the earlier conclusion of Wall, Pope & Scott. We also find strong evidence for the existence of two differently evolving sub-populations separated in luminosity, with a higher relative density of the high luminosity galaxies at higher redshifts.
Prospects for Future Far-Infrared/Submillimeter Studies of the High-Redshift Universe

Highlights of Astronomy

Abstract:Abstract Observations made using COBE , SCUBA, ISO and MAMBO have provided a reasonable working knowledge of both the intensity of the submm and far-infrared background radiation and the source counts of luminous high-redshift dusty galaxies. However, because there are uncertainties in the background intensity determinations, the samples of detected galaxies are small, and most importantly, their redshift distributions are very incomplete, details of the evolution of dusty galaxies remain unresolved. The next steps forward in the field will be the launches of SIRTF and ASTRO-F , the commissioning of SOFIA and new, more capable ground-based mm/submm-wave cameras - BOLOCAM, SHARC-II and SCUBA-II - the use of ultra-long duration balloon experiments, such as BLAST, the construction of ALMA and the arrival of FIRST , and ultimately the advent of space-borne far-infrared interferometers, such as SPECS . There are also exciting prospects for direct mm/submm-wave CO-line redshift surveys using wide-band spectrographs. Using these new facilities, the number of high-redshift dusty galaxies known will be increased dramatically. Spectroscopy using SIRTF , SOFIA and FIRST will probe the astrophysical processes within these sources in detail, hopefully addressing the open question of the fraction of the counts and background radiation that is generated by the formation of high-mass stars and by active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The spatial and spectral structure of distant dusty galaxies will finally be resolved in detail using ALMA and SPECS .
Gravitational Lensing Limits on the Average Redshift of Submillimeter Sources

Abstract:The submillimeter universe has now been explored with the Submillimeter Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and a claim has been made to the presence of a new population of optically unidentified starforming galaxies at high redshifts (z \gtrsim 3). Such a population dramatically alters current views on the star formation history of the universe as well as galaxy formation and evolution. Recently, new radio identifications of the Hubble Deep Field submm sources have led to the suggestion that some of these sources are at low redshifts, however, submm source redshift distribution is still not well determined. Here, we present an upper limit to the average redshift <z> by comparing the expected number of gravitationally lensed submm sources due to foreground cluster potentials to current observed statistics of such lensed sources. The upper limit depends on the cosmological parameters, and at the 68% confidence level, <z> < 3.1, 4.8, 5.2, or 8.0 for (Omega,Lambda) values of (0.3,0.7), (0.5,0.5), (0.3,0.0) or (1.0,0.0) respectively. These upper limits are consistent with redshift distribution for 850 micron sources implied by starformation history models based on measured background radiation at far-infrared and submm wavelengths.

Abstract:We present deep 850micron imaging of the z=0.773 strong lensing galaxy cluster RCSJ022434-0002.5 from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (RCS). These data are part of a larger submillimeter survey of RCS clusters, with SCUBA on the JCMT. We find five objects at 850micron, all of which are also detected at either 1.4-GHz, 450micron or both. The number density of objects in this field is in general agreement with the blank-field source counts; however, when combined with other cluster surveys a general tendency of cluster fields towards higher submm number densities is seen, which may be the result of unrecognized submillimeter luminous cluster galaxies. Primarily employing optical photometric redshifts we show that two of the five submillimeter galaxies in this field are consistent with being cluster members, while two are more likely background systems.

A Search for High-redshift Quasars Among GB/FIRST Flat-Spectrum Radio Sources

Abstract:We present the method and first results of a survey for high-redshift (z>3) radio-loud quasars, which is based on optical identifications of 2902 flat-spectrum radio sources with S(5GHz)>= 25mJy. The radio sample was defined over a 1600 sq degree region using the 5GHz Green Bank survey and the 1.4GHz VLA FIRST survey. 560 sources were identified to a limit of E=19.5 on APM scans of POSS-I plates and 337 of these optical counterparts are unresolved. From these a complete sample of 73 optically red (O-E >= 1.2) sources was defined for spectroscopic follow up. We have obtained spectra for 36 of these and an additional 14 had redshifts in the literature, thus 70% of the spectroscopic sample is completed. Six objects in the sample were found to be radio-loud quasars with z>3 of which two were previously known. The efficiency of the spectroscopic phase of the survey is therefore about 1 in 9. The six z>3 quasars were found in an effective area of 1100 square degrees, implying a surface density of one flat-spectrum z>3 radio-loud quasar per 190 square degrees to limits of E=19.5 and S(5GHz)>= 25mJy. This survey also produced the first known radio-loud BAL quasar, 1556+3517 with z=1.48, which has been reported in an earlier paper (Becker et al 1997). In addition we have obtained spectra of 22 GB/FIRST sources which are not part of the complete sample. We give positions, E (red) magnitudes, O-E colours, radio fluxes, radio spectral index and redshifts where possible for objects for which we have obtained spectra. We give spectra and finding charts for the z>3 quasars. (Abstract abridged)

The sub-mJy radio population of the E-CDFS: Optical and infrared counterpart identification

Abstract:We study a sample of 883 sources detected in a deep Very Large Array survey at 1.4 GHz in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. This paper focuses on the identification of their optical and infrared (IR) counterparts. We use a likelihood-ratio technique that is particularly useful when dealing with deep optical images to minimize the number of spurious associations. We find a reliable counterpart for 95% of our radio sources. Most of the counterparts (74%) are detected at optical wavelengths, but there is a significant fraction (21%) that are only detectable in the IR. Combining newly acquired optical spectra with data from the literature, we are able to assign a redshift to 81% of the identified radio sources (37% spectroscopic). We also investigate the X-ray properties of the radio sources using the Chandra 4 Ms and 250 ks observations. In particular, we use a stacking technique to derive the average properties of radio objects undetected in the Chandra images. The results of our analysis are collected in a new catalog containing the position of the optical/IR counterpart, the redshift information, and the X-ray fluxes. It is the deepest multi-wavelength catalog of radio sources, which will be used for future study of this galaxy population.
2mm Observations and the Search for High-Redshift Dusty Star-forming Galaxies

Abstract:Finding high-redshift (z>>4) dusty star-forming galaxies is extremely challenging. It has recently been suggested that millimeter selections may be the best approach, since the negative K-correction makes galaxies at a given far-infrared (FIR) luminosity brighter at z>4 than those at z=2-3. Here we analyze this issue using a deep ALMA 2mm sample obtained by targeting ALMA 870um priors (these priors were the result of targeting SCUBA-2 850um sources) in the GOODS-S. We construct the prior-based 2mm galaxy number counts and compare them with published blank field-based 2mm counts, finding good agreement down to 0.2mJy. Only a fraction of the current 2mm extragalactic background light is resolved, and we estimate what observational depths may be needed to resolve it fully. By complementing the 2mm ALMA data with a deep SCUBA-2 450um sample in the GOODS-S, we exploit the steep gradient with redshift of the 2mm to 450um flux density ratio to estimate redshifts for these galaxies without spectroscopic or robust optical/near-infrared photometric redshifts. Our observations measure galaxies with star formation rates in excess of 250 solar masses per year. For these galaxies, the star formation rate densities fall by a factor of 9 from z=2-3 to z=5-6.

Abstract:We report on the identification of the highest redshift submm-selected source currently known: LESSJ033229.4-275619. This source was detected in the Large Apex BOlometer CAmera (LABOCA) Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) Submillimetre Survey (LESS), a sensitive 870-um survey (~1.2-mJy rms) of the full 30'x30' ECDFS with the LABOCA camera on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope. The submm emission is identified with a radio counterpart for which optical spectroscopy provides a redshift of z=4.76. We show that the bolometric emission is dominated by a starburst with a star formation rate of ~1000 Msun/yr, although we also identify a moderate luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in this galaxy. Thus it has characteristics similar to those of z~2 submm galaxies (SMGs), with a mix of starburst and obscured AGN signatures. This demonstrates that ultraluminous starburst activity is not just restricted to the hosts of the most luminous (and hence rare) QSOs at z~5, but was also occurring in less extreme galaxies at a time when the Universe was less than 10% of its current age. Assuming that we are seeing the major phase of star formation in this galaxy, then we demonstrate that it would be identified as a luminous distant red galaxy at z~3 and that the current estimate of the space density of z>4 SMGs is only sufficient to produce ~10% of the luminous red galaxy population at these early times. However, this leaves open the possibility that some of these galaxies formed through less intense, but more extended star formation events. If the progenitors of all of the luminous red galaxies at z~3 go through an ultraluminous starburst at z>4 then the required volume density of z>4 SMGs will exceed that predicted by current galaxy formation models by more than an order of magnitude.

The faint counterparts of MAMBO mm sources near the NTT Deep Field

Abstract:We discuss identifications for 18 sources from our MAMBO 1.2mm survey of the region surrounding the NTT Deep Field. We have obtained accurate positions from Very Large Array 1.4GHz interferometry and in a few cases IRAM mm interferometry, and have also made deep BVRIzJK imaging at ESO. We find thirteen 1.2mm sources associated with optical/near-infrared objects in the magnitude range K=19.0 to 22.5, while five are blank fields at K>22. The median redshift of the radio-identified mm sources is ~2.6 from the radio/mm estimator, and the median optical/near-infrared photometric redshifts for the objects with counterparts ~2.1. This suggests that those radio-identified mm sources without optical/near-infrared counterparts tend to lie at higher redshifts than those with optical/near-infrared counterparts. Compared to published identifications of objects from 850micron surveys of similar depth, the median K and I magnitudes of our counterparts are roughly two magnitudes fainter and the dispersion of I-K colors is less. Real differences in the median redshifts, residual mis-identifications with bright objects, cosmic variance, and small number statistics are likely to contribute to this significant difference, which also affects redshift measurement strategies. We discuss basic properties of the near-infrared/(sub)mm/radio spectral energy distributions of our galaxies and of interferometrically identified submm sources from the literature. From a comparison with submm objects with CO-confirmed spectroscopic redshifts we argue that roughly two thirds of the (sub)mm galaxies are at z>~2.5. This fraction is probably larger when including sources without radio counterparts. (abridged)

Abstract:A fundamental question of extra-galactic astronomy that is yet to be fully understood, concerns the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) and supermassive black hole (SMBH) activity with cosmic time, as well as their interplay and how it impacts galaxy evolution. A primary focus that could shed more light on these questions is the study of merging systems, comprising highly star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the earliest stages of galactic formation. However, it is essential to explore complementary selection methods across multiple wavelengths. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of a sample of high-redshift ($z>3$) far-infrared (far-IR) and radio-emitting galaxies in the highest possible spatial resolution. In order to select the galactic population of our interest, we selected galaxies that present relatively compact radio morphologies at 1.4 GHz as well as a far-IR spectrum that peaks in flux at $\lambda \geq 350 \, \mu m$. For these selection criteria, we used the COSMOS and ECDF-S fields, which provide high spectral and spatial resolution at a multi-wavelength scale. We derived a sample of eight galaxies that were identified either photometrically or spectroscopically at $z>3$ from literature studies and by our team. A thorough investigation of available optical, near-IR, and millimetre (mm) imaging reveals a possible merging scenario in five out of eight cases in our sample. Additionally, available multi-wavelength photometry strongly suggests active star formation at the $10^3 \, M_{\odot}/yr$ level in massive systems co-hosting an active SMBH. Comparison of these results with previous studies, suggests that our selection method preferentially identifies galaxies hosting an active SMBH, as well as a strong SFG component, resulting in high SFR and IR luminosity.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Measuring the environments of massive galaxies at high redshift is crucial to understanding galaxy evolution and the conditions that gave rise to the distribution of matter we see in the Universe today. While high-z radio galaxies (HzRGs) and quasars tend to reside in protocluster-like systems, the environments of their radio-quiet counterparts are relatively unexplored, particularly in the submillimetre, which traces dust-obscured star formation. In this study, we search for 850 μm-selected submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the environments of massive ($M_{\star }$$\gt 10^{11}$${\rm M}_{\odot }$), radio-quiet ($L_{500 {\rm MHz}}$$\lesssim 10^{25}$ WHz$^{-1}$) galaxies at $z \sim 1\!-\!3$ using data from the SCUBA-2 COSMOS (S2COSMOS) survey. By constructing number counts in circular regions of radius 1–6 arcmin and comparing with blank-field measurements, we find no significant overdensities of SMGs around massive radio-quiet galaxies at any of these scales, despite being sensitive down to overdensities of $\delta \sim 0.4$. To probe deeper than the catalogue we also examine the distribution of peaks in the SCUBA-2 signal-to-noise (SNR) map, which reveals only tentative signs of any difference in the SMG densities of the radio-quiet galaxy environments compared to the blank field, and only on smaller scales (1 arcmin radii, corresponding to $\sim 0.5$ Mpc) and higher SNR thresholds. We conclude that massive, radio-quiet galaxies at cosmic noon are typically in environments with $\delta \lesssim 0.4$, which are either consistent with the blank field or contain only weak overdensities spanning sub-Mpc scales. The contrast between our results and studies of HzRGs with similar stellar masses and redshifts implies an intrinsic link between the wide-field environment and the radio luminosity of the active galactic nucleus at high redshift.

Abstract:This is the second in a series of papers presenting observations and results for a sample of 76 ultra-steep-spectrum (USS) radio sources in the southern hemisphere designed to find galaxies at high redshift. Here we focus on the optical spectroscopy program for 53 galaxies in the sample. We report 35 spectroscopic redshifts, based on observations with the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the New Technology Telescope (NTT) and the Australian National University's 2.3m telescope; they include five radio galaxies with z>3. Spectroscopic redshifts for the remaining 18 galaxies could not be confirmed: three are occulted by Galactic stars, eight show continuum emission but no discernible spectral lines, whilst the remaining seven galaxies are undetected in medium-deep VLT integrations. The latter are either at very high redshift (z >~7) or heavily obscured by dust. A discussion of the efficiency of the USS technique is presented. Based on the similar space density of z>3 radio galaxies in our sample compared with other USS-selected samples, we argue that USS selection at 843-1400 MHz is an efficient and reliable technique for finding distant radio galaxies.

Using VO tools to investigate distant radio starbursts hosting obscured AGN in the HDF(N) region

Abstract:A 10-arcmin field around the HDF(N) contains 92 radio sources >40 uJy, resolved by MERLIN+VLA at 0".2-2".0 resolution. 55 have Chandra X-ray counterparts including 18 with a hard X-ray photon index and high luminosity characteristic of a type-II (obscured) AGN. >70% of the radio sources have been classified as starbursts or AGN using radio morphologies, spectral indices and comparisons with optical appearance and MIR emission. Starbursts outnumber radio AGN 3:1. This study extends the VO methods previously used to identify X-ray-selected obscured type-II AGN to investigate whether very luminous radio and X-ray emission originates from different phenomena in the same galaxy. The high-redshift starbursts have typical sizes of 5--10 kpc and star formation rates of ~1000 Msun/yr. There is no correlation between radio and X-ray luminosities nor spectral indices at z>~1.3. ~70% of both the radio-selected AGN and the starburst samples were detected by Chandra. The X-ray luminosity indicates the presence of an AGN in at least half of the 45 cross-matched radio starbursts, of which 11 are type-II AGN including 7 at z>1.5. This distribution overlaps closely with the X-ray detected radio sources which were also detected by SCUBA. Stacked 1.4-GHz emission at the positions of radio-faint X-ray sources is correlated with X-ray hardness. Most extended radio starbursts at z>1.3 host X-ray selected obscured AGN. Radio emission from most of these ultra-luminous objects is dominated by star formation but it contributes less than 1/3 of their X-ray luminosity. Our results support the inferences from SCUBA and IR data, that at z>1.5, star formation is an order of magnitude more extended and more copious, it is closely linked to AGN activity and it is triggered differently, compared with star formation at lower redshifts.

Abstract:We have searched for H I 21 cm absorption toward the two brightest radio AGNs at high redshift, J0924-2201 at z = 5.20 and J0913+5919 at z = 5.11, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. These data set a 3 sigma upper limit to absorption of < 30% at 40 km s(-1) resolution for the 30 mJy source J0913+5919, and < 3% for the 0.55 Jy source J0924- 2201 at 20 km s(-1) resolution. For J0924-2201, limits to broader lines at the few percent level are set by residual spectral baseline structure. For J0924-2201 the column density limit per 20 km s(-1) channel is N( H I) < 2.2 x 10(18) T-s cm(-2) over a velocity range of -700 to +1180 km s(-1) centered on the galaxy redshift determined through CO emission, assuming a covering factor of 1. For J0913+5919 the column density limit per 40 km s(-1) channel is N( H I) < 2.2 x 10(19) Ts cm(-2) within +/- 2400 km s(-1) of the optical redshift. These data rule out any cool, high column density H I clouds within roughly +/- 1000 km s(-1) of the galaxies, as are often seen in compact steep-spectrum radio AGNs, or clouds that might correspond to residual gas left over from cosmic reionization.
A new sample of southern radio galaxies: Host galaxy masses and star-formation rates

Abstract:In this study we define a new sample of distant powerful radio galaxies in order to study their host-galaxy properties and provide targets for future observations of HI absorption with new radio telescopes and to understand the fuelling and feedback from such sources. We have cross-matched the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) radio catalogue at 843 MHz with the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) near-infrared catalogue using the Likelihood Ratio technique. Photometric redshifts from the Dark Energy Survey are then used to assign redshifts to the radio source counterparts. We found a total of 249 radio sources with photometric redshifts over a 148 deg^2 region. By fitting the optical and near-infrared photometry with spectral synthesis models we determine the stellar mass and star-formation rates of the radio sources, finding typical stellar masses of 10^{11} - 10^{12}M$_{\odot}$ for the powerful high-redshift radio galaxies. We also find a population of low-mass blue galaxies. However, by comparing the derived star-formation rates to the radio luminosity, we suggest that these sources are false positives in our likelihood ratio analysis. Follow up, higher-resolution (<5 arcsec) radio imaging would help alleviate these mid-identifications, as the limiting factor in our cross-identifications is the low resolution (~45 arcsec) of the SUMSS radio imaging.

Mapping the Decline with Redshift of Dusty Star-forming Galaxies Using JWST and SCUBA-2

Abstract:We use JWST NIRCam observations of the massive lensing cluster field A2744 to develop a red galaxy selection of f(F444W) > 1 uJy and f(F444W)/f(F150W) > 3.5 that picks out all 9 >4.5-sigma ALMA 1.1 or 1.2 mm sources and 17 of the 19 >5-sigma SCUBA-2 850 micron sources in the covered areas. We show that by using the red galaxies as priors, we can probe deeper in the SCUBA-2 850 micron image. This gives a sample of 44 >3-sigma SCUBA-2 850 micron sources with accurate positions, photometric redshifts, and magnifications. To investigate why our red galaxy selection picks out the 850 micron sources, we next analyze an extended sample of 167 sources with f(F444W) >0.05uJy and f(F444W)/f(F150W) >3.5. We find that the fainter f(F444W) sources in this sample are too faint to be detected in the SCUBA-2 850 micron image. We also show that there is a strong drop between z<4 and z>4 (a factor of around 5) in the ratio of the far-infrared luminosity estimated from the 850 micron flux to the nuLnu(5000) at rest-frame 5000A. We argue that this result may be due to the high-redshift sources having less dust content than the lower redshift sources.

Abstract:We examine the behaviour of the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) over the range $0<z<6$ using new, highly sensitive 3GHz observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and infrared data from the Herschel Space Observatory in the 2deg$^{2}$ COSMOS field. We distinguish between objects where emission is believed to arise solely from star-formation, and those where an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is thought to be present. We account for non-detections in the radio or in the infrared using a doubly-censored survival analysis. We find that the IRRC of star-forming galaxies, quantified by the infrared-to-1.4GHz radio luminosity ratio ($q_{\rm TIR}$), decreases with increasing redshift: $q_{\rm TIR}(z)=(2.88\pm0.03)(1+z)^{-0.19\pm0.01}$. Moderate-to-high radiative luminosity AGN do not follow the same $q_{\rm TIR}$$(z)$ trend, having a lower normalisation and steeper decrease with redshift. We cannot rule out the possibility that unidentified AGN contributions only to the radio regime may be steepening the observed $q_{\rm TIR}(z)$ trend of the star-forming population. An increasing fractional contribution to the observed 3GHz flux by free-free emission of star-forming galaxies may also affect the derived evolution. However, we find that the standard (M82-based) assumption of the typical radio spectral energy distribution (SED) for star-forming galaxies is inconsistent with our results. This suggests a more complex shape of the typical radio SED for star-forming galaxies, and that imperfect $K$ corrections in the radio may govern the derived redshift trend of $q_{\rm TIR}$. Lastly, we present a redshift-dependent relation between rest-frame 1.4GHz radio luminosity and star formation rate taking the derived redshift trend into account.

Abstract:High-redshift radio(-loud) galaxies (H$z$RGs) are massive galaxies with powerful radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and serve as beacons for protocluster identification. However, the interplay between H$z$RGs and the large-scale environment remains unclear. To understand the connection between H$z$RGs and the surrounding obscured star formation, we investigated the overdensity and spatial distribution of submillimeter-bright galaxies (SMGs) in the field of 4C\,23.56, a well-known H$z$RG at $z=2.48$. We used SCUBA-2 data ($ sim \,0.6$\,mJy) to estimate the m m $ sources in the vicinity of the H$z$RG. The angular distribution of SMGs is inhomogeneous around the H$z$RG 4C\,23.56, with fewer sources oriented along the radio jet. We also find a significant overdensity of bright SMGs S m Faint and bright SMGs exhibit different spatial distributions. The former are concentrated in the core region, while the latter prefer the outskirts of the H$z$RG field. High-resolution observations show that the seven brightest SMGs in our sample are intrinsically bright, suggesting that the overdensity of bright SMGs is less likely due to the source multiplicity.
