Abstract:Microsoft TerraServer displays aerial, satellite, and to-pographic images of the earth in a SQL database available via the Internet. It is one of the most popular online at-lases, presenting seventeen terabytes of image data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Initially de-ployed in 1998, the system demonstrated the scalability of PC hardware and software - Windows and SQL Server - on a single, mainframe-class processor. In September 2000, the back-end database application was migrated to 4-node active/passive cluster connected to an 18 terabyte Storage Area Network (SAN). The new configuration was designed to achieve 99.99% availability for the back-end application. This paper describes the hardware and software components of the TerraServer Cluster and SAN, and describes our experience in configuring and operating this system for three years. Not surprisingly, the hardware and architecture delivered better than four-9's of availability, but operations mistakes delivered three-9's.
Geospatial Web Service for Remote Sensing Data Visualization

Abstract:The widely used geospatial web services technology has provided a new means for geospatial data interoperability. Web Map Service (WMS) is a standardized geospatial web service from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). WMSs can be used for requesting and producing maps on the Internet, and have been widely adopted in the Geographic Information System (GIS) community. These WMSs make remote sensing data available to a wider range of public users than ever before. However, the performance of current OGC-Compatible WMS servers can not satisfy the need of massive remote sensing data visualization. To implement a performance-optimized WMS server, we propose a global remote sensing data hierarchical model based on tile imagery pyramid and quad tree techniques for data organization and index, and adopt Hilbert curve allocation method (HCAM) for data placement. On this basis, we implement an OGC compatible tiled WMS and a service wrapper for mapping WMS to Web Services. Finally, we evaluate the tiled WMS server using real remote sensing datasets. Experiment results demonstrate a high-performance data access.
A Novel Terminal-Processing Application for Utilizing Satellite Imagery in Mobile GIS

Abstract:The good network conditions are of great importance in most current mobile GIS systems for the application of satellite images, as most image processing and analyses are conducted on the server side, whereas the mobile device needs to frequently sent the requests and receive the outcomes of the server through the Internet. However, because of the poor network condition in isolated workplace of fieldworkers, it is difficult for them to have enough interactions with the server side efficiently. Therefore, a new terminal-processing prototype application, RSTools, for handling satellite images on the client side is designed to reduce dependence on good networks. The prototype allows users to conduct real-time operations, covering band math, color composite and rule-based image classifications for multi-source satellite images such as Landsat 8, WorldView2 and GaoFen-1. Compared to traditional remote sensing applications, this application is efficient at reducing not only the interactions times but also the time spent in obtaining the results of image processing in real-time, especially when the data transmission time is considered. As such, if the network condition is poor, the application will be a better choice to efficiently obtain results of satellite images in real-time.

Abstract:Marine remote sensing (MRS) data provide an important tool for advancing global change research. However, the existing product service practices are insufficient for meeting the needs of a full-experience online application. This paper introduces a framework named SatANA, which is unified by a data tiling method with a spatial-aware feature, for integrated and intelligent improvements in visualization, storage and computing. The SatANA framework is supported by a hybrid database storage ideal for the cloud storage of massive MRS data. The raw data are displayed and roamed on a virtual globe through the Internet as tiles, enhancing their spatial awareness, that can be intelligently used for visualization result tuning, data storage preloading and distributed computing optimized indexing. To verify its feasibility and effectiveness, we applied this framework to a platform called SatCO2, which is devoted to providing convenient access to and the efficient utilization of MRS data.

Abstract:With the exponential growth of the usage of web map services, the geo data analysis has become more and more popular. This paper develops an online spatial data analysis and visualization system, TerraFly GeoCloud, which facilitates end users to visualize and analyze spatial data, and to share the analysis results. Built on the TerraFly Geo spatial database, TerraFly GeoCloud is an extra layer running upon the TerraFly map and can efficiently support many different visualization functions and spatial data analysis models. Furthermore, users can create unique URLs to visualize and share the analysis results. TerraFly GeoCloud also enables the MapQL technology to customize map visualization using SQL-like statements. Abstract:Big Data Analytics is an emerging field since massive storage and computing capabilities have been made available by advanced e-infrastructures. Earth and Environmental sciences are likely to benefit from Big Data Analytics techniques supporting the processing of the large number of Earth Observation datasets currently acquired and generated through observations and simulations. However, Earth Science data and applications present specificities in terms of relevance of the geospatial information, wide heterogeneity of data models and formats, and complexity of processing. Therefore, Big Earth Data Analytics requires specifically tailored techniques and tools. The EarthServer Big Earth Data Analytics engine offers a solution for coverage-type datasets, built around a high performance array database technology, and the adoption and enhancement of standards for service interaction (OGC WCS and WCPS). The EarthServer solution, led by the collection of requirements from scientific communities and international initiatives, provides a holistic approach that ranges from query languages and scalability up to mobile access and visualization. The result is demonstrated and validated through the development of lighthouse applications in the Marine, Geology, Atmospheric, Planetary and Cryospheric science domains.

Abstract:We present our experiences using cloud computing to support data-intensive analytics on satellite imagery for commercial applications. Drawing from our background in high-performance computing, we draw parallels between the early days of clustered computing systems and the current state of cloud computing and its potential to disrupt the HPC market. Using our own virtual file system layer on top of cloud remote object storage, we demonstrate aggregate read bandwidth of 230 gigabytes per second using 512 Google Compute Engine (GCE) nodes accessing a USA multi-region standard storage bucket. This figure is comparable to the best HPC storage systems in existence. We also present several of our application results, including the identification of field boundaries in Ukraine, and the generation of a global cloud-free base layer from Landsat imagery.

Abstract:The physical phenomena derived from an analysis of remotely sensed imagery provide a clearer understanding of the spectral variations of a large number of land use and cover (LUC) classes. The creation of LUC maps have corroborated this view by enabling the scientific community to estimate the parameter heterogeneity of the Earth’s surface. Along with descriptions of features and statistics for aggregating spatio-temporal information, the government programs have disseminated thematic maps to further the implementation of effective public policies and foster sustainable development. In Brazil, PRODES and DETER have shown that they are committed to monitoring the mapping areas of large-scale deforestation systematically and by means of data quality assurance. However, these programs are so complex that they require the designing, implementation and deployment of a spatial data infrastructure based on extensive data analytics features so that users who lack a necessary understanding of standard spatial interfaces can still carry out research on them. With this in mind, the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) has designed TerraBrasilis, a spatial data analytics infrastructure that provides interfaces that are not only found within traditional geographic information systems but also in data analytics environments with complex algorithms. To ensure it achieved its best performance, we leveraged a micro-service architecture with virtualized computer resources to enable high availability, lower size, simplicity to produce an increment, reliable to change and fault tolerance in unstable computer network scenarios. In addition, we tuned and optimized our databases both to adjust to the input format of complex algorithms and speed up the loading of the web application so that it was faster than other systems.

Abstract:The deteriorating environmental system and increasing number of time-varying datasets have generated a significant demand for new techniques to support online high-efficiency climate analysis. In response to this demand, this paper introduces an innovative multilayer architecture driven by a tile service in a virtual globe environment. This architecture is supported by the open-source and highly efficient osgEarth virtual globe. In addition, we develop a gSoap-based tile service to address the challenges of visualizing and analysing massive data under hardware restrictions conditions. The service contains a lossless pyramid tile set that can automatically provide tiles with proper accuracy according to the demands of users under different conditions. Furthermore, we add a hybrid database file system to the service for high availability. This service is then applied for estimation of ocean carbon flux. And a proof-of-concept prototype, SatCO2, has been developed to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the proposed architecture.

Abstract:Satellite remote sensing imagery data is an important Geospatial data which is playing an increasingly important role in many applications such as crisis management, military activities and Government decision-making. However, it will continue to be a great challenge to organize and manage these multi-dimension massive remote sensing data for collaborative visualization services in Internet environment. In this paper we proposed a hierarchical directory structure based on tiling and pyramid technologies for the organization and management of multi-source and multi-scale remote sensing data. We implemented a collaborative Geospatial data visualization system based on our proposed storage structure using Web Services, WSRF and Web2.0 technologies. Finally, we evaluated the prototype system with real data sets, which demonstrated the high performance data access in our system.

Abstract:The Saratoga transfer protocol was developed by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) for its Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC) satellites. In over seven years of operation, Saratoga has provided efficient delivery of remote-sensing Earth observation imagery, across private wireless links, from these seven low-orbit satellites to ground stations, using the Internet Protocol (IP). Saratoga is designed to cope with high bandwidth-delay products, constrained acknowledgement channels, and high loss while streaming or delivering extremely large files. An implementation of this protocol has now been developed at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) for wider use and testing. This is intended to prototype delivery of data across dedicated astronomy radio telescope networks on the ground, where networked sensors in Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) instruments generate large amounts of data for processing and can send that data across private IP- and Ethernet-based links at very high rates. We describe this new Saratoga implementation, its features and focus on high throughput and link utilization, and lessons learned in developing this protocol for sensor-network applications.

Abstract:The ability to use data stored in the current Earth Observing System (EOS) archives for studying regional or global phenomena is highly dependent on having a detailed understanding of the data's internal structure and physical implementation. Gaining this understanding and applying it to data reduction is a time- consuming task that must be undertaken before the core investigation can begin. This is an especially difficult challenge when science objectives require users to deal with large multi-sensor data sets that are usually of different formats, structures, and resolutions, for example, when preparing data for input into modeling systems. The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) has taken a major step towards meeting this challenge by developing an infrastructure with a Web interface that allows users to perform interactive analysis online without downloading any data, the GES-DISC Interactive Online Visualization and Analysis Infrastructure or Giovanni. Giovanni provides interactive, online, analysis tools for data users to facilitate their research. There have been several instances of this interface created to serve TRMM users, Aerosol scientists, Ocean Color and Agriculture applications users. The first generation of these tools support gridded data only. The user selects geophysical parameters, area of interest, time period; and the system generates an output on screen in a matter of seconds. The currently available output options are: Area plot averaged or accumulated over any available data period for any rectangular area; Time plot time series averaged over any rectangular area; Time plots image view of any longitude-time and latitude-time cross sections; ASCII output for all plot types; Image animation for area plot. In the future, we will add correlation plots, GIS-compatible outputs, etc. This allow user to focus on data content (i.e. science parameters) and eliminate the need for expensive learning, development and processing tasks that are redundantly incurred by an archive's user community. The current implementation utilizes the GrADS-DODS Server (GDS), a stable, secure data server that provides subsetting and analysis services across the Internet for any GrADS-readable dataset. The subsetting capability allows users to retrieve a specified temporal and/or spatial subdomain from a large dataset, eliminating the need to download everything simply to access a small relevant portion of a dataset. The analysis capability allows users to retrieve the results of an operation applied to one or more datasets on the server. In our case, we use this approach to read pre-processed binary files and/or to read and extract the needed parts from HDF or HDF-EOS files. These subsets then serve as inputs into GrADS processing and analysis scripts. It can be used in a wide variety of Earth science applications: climate and weather events study and monitoring; modeling. It can be easily configured for new applications.

Abstract:With the continuous development of remote sensing technology, the data volume of remote sensing images has increased exponentially, resulting in many difficulties in the storage, management, transmission, calculation, and other processes of remote sensing images. In order to solve the above problems, this paper studies the use of the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and related technologies to design and implement a browser/server (B/S) architecture for a massive, multisource, remote sensing images distributed storage management system. The image data are stored in the HDFS, and the image metadata are stored in a MySQL database. The distributed parallel construction of the image pyramid is completed based on the Spark computing engine, and the Akka framework is used to construct WMTS (Web Map Tile Service) to realize the release of remote sensing images. Finally, the rapid visual display of remote sensing images is carried out using Leaflet. The system also supports image data management, image target detection, user management, and other functions. After testing, this system can support the storage and management of multisource remote sensing image data, and can solve perfectly the problems of insufficient storage space and insufficient computing power of a single server. It is found that the upload and download speeds of a large amount of remote sensing images can be close to the maximum speed of a gigabit local area network (LAN). In the gigabit LAN environment, the average upload speed of a single remote sensing image is 97.74 MB/s, and the average download speed is 87.62 MB/s. In terms of image pyramid construction, the speed of a multi-node parallel construction based on Spark is two times higher than that of a single-node construction. Additionally, compared to similar systems, this system has better data transmission and retrieval speed, better data computing ability, and higher concurrency processing ability.

Abstract:In the past few years, the Web has become a de facto deployment environment for new application systems. Web-based Geospatial image map systems make satellite remote sensing data available to a wider range of public users than ever before. The storage and organization of global massive multi-dimensional remote sensing data have a big impact on the performance of Web mapping systems. To implement a performance-optimized Web mapping system, we propose a global grid division pyramid hierarchical data model for massive remote sensing data management, and adopt Hilbert curve allocation method for data placements. Collaborative web map browsing is also very important for many applications such as crisis management, military activities and government decision-making. However, realizing collaboration functionality on the basis of the stateless HTTP protocol, optimized for client requests, is not trivial. The limitations of the Web's request/response architecture prevent server from pushing real-time dynamic Web data. To address this problem, we propose a web-based interactive collaborative browsing framework based on server push technique (Comet). Moreover, we develop a prototype system called ACTGIS. Finally, we evaluate the prototype system using real remote sensing datasets, which demonstrate the good performance data access in our system.

Abstract:From 2002 to 2004, a satellite data processing system for marine application had been built up in State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics (Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration). The system received satellite data from TERRA, AQUA, NOAA-12/15/16/17/18, FY-1D and automatically generated Level3 products and Level4 products(products of single orbit and merged multi-orbits products) deriving from Level0 data, which is controlled by an operational control sub-system. Currently, the products created by this system play an important role in the marine environment monitoring, disaster monitoring and researches.Now a distribution platform has been developed on this foundation, namely WebGIS system for querying and browsing of oceanic remote sensing data. This system is based upon large database system-Oracle. We made use of the space database engine of ArcSDE and other middleware to perform database operation in addition. J2EE frame was adopted as development model, and Oracle 9.2 DBMS as database background and server.Simply using standard browsers(such as IE6.0), users can visit and browse the public service information that provided by system, including browsing for oceanic remote sensing data, and enlarge, contract, move, renew, traveling, further data inquiry, attribution search and data download etc.The system is still under test now. Founding of such a system will become an important distribution platform of Chinese satellite oceanic environment products of special topic and category (including Sea surface temperature, Concentration of chlorophyll, and so on), for the exaltation of satellite products' utilization and promoting the data share and the research of the oceanic remote sensing platform.

Abstract:Abstract. Owing to the rapid development of earth observation technology, the volume of spatial information is growing rapidly; therefore, improving query retrieval speed from large, rich data sources for remote-sensing data management systems is quite urgent. A global subdivision model, geographic coordinate subdivision grid with one-dimension integer coding on 2n-tree, which we propose as a solution, has been used in data management organizations. However, because a spatial object may cover several grids, ample data redundancy will occur when data are stored in relational databases. To solve this redundancy problem, we first combined the subdivision model with the spatial array database containing the inverted index. We proposed an improved approach for integrating and managing massive remote-sensing data. By adding a spatial code column in an array format in a database, spatial information in remote-sensing metadata can be stored and logically subdivided. We implemented our method in a Kingbase Enterprise Server database system and compared the results with the Oracle platform by simulating worldwide image data. Experimental results showed that our approach performed better than Oracle in terms of data integration and time and space efficiency. Our approach also offers an efficient storage management system for existing storage centers and management systems.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the World Wide Web, remote sensing (RS) data have become available to a wider range of public/professional users than ever before. Web Map Services (WMSs) provide a simple Web interface for requesting RS data from distributed geospatial databases. RS data providers typically expect to provide lightweight WMSs. They have a low construction cost, and can be easily managed and deployed on standard hardware/software platforms. However, existing systems for WMSs are often heavyweight and inherently hard to manage, due to their improper usage of databases or data storage. That is, they are not suitable for public data services on the Web. In addition, RS data are moving toward the multi-dimensional paradigm, which is characterized by multi-sensor, multi-spectral, multi-temporal and high resolution. Therefore, an efficient organization and storage approach of multi-dimensional RS data is needed for lightweight WMSs, and the efficient WMSs must support multi-dimensional Web browsing. In this paper, we propose a Global Remote Sensing Data Hierarchical Model (GRHM) based on the image pyramid and tiling techniques. GRHM is a logical model that is independent upon physical storage. To support lightweight WMSs, we propose a physical storage structure, and deploy multi-dimensional RS data on Web servers. To further improve the performance of WMSs, a data declustering method based on Hilbert space-filling curve is adopted for the distributed storage. We also provide an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) WMS and a Web map system in Web browsers. Experiments conducted on real RS datasets show promising performance of the proposed lightweight WMSs.

Abstract:Climatic data are critical in supporting of the agricultural and ecological studies. Traditionally, the way of managing and accessing to the data is locally fulfilled. To demonstrate the value of cyberinfrastructure and to ease the access to the data, this paper presented a case study of managing, visualizing and analyzing the global multi-station climatic data in a Web-based environment. This study took 1961-1990 global standard climate normals data published by World Meteorological Organization as an exemplar. It proposed a relational data model to store the climate normals data. It utilized SQL Server to store and manage the data as Web-accessible data services, ArcGIS Server as GIS Server to enable on-demand accessuser operation map and presented an ASP.Net-based web portal for scientists to fulfill data search, data visualization and data analysis functions. The system design and the implementation details of this prototype are introduced. This case study clearly shows that the unstructured climatic text data could be transformed to be structured database, which further enables the on-demand data sharing, search, retrieval and online analysis functions. GCDViewer's design principle and system architecture could apply to many other types of scientific data. It clearly shows the advantage of building cyberinfrastructure to improve the overall research efficiency.
