Abstract:Two models of the circumstellar disc around supergiant B[e] stars are discussed: an equatorial wind model produced by wind bi-stability, and a Keplerian viscous disc model. Both models are successful in providing a site for dust formation once they have cooled sufficiently. However, the optical--infra-red continuum is calculated and it is found that both models have significant trouble in accounting for observations. In particular the optical--near-IR emission is accounted for, but the dust emission is underestimated by at least an order of magnitude. Variations in the structure of the models (the temperature variation with radius, the density structure and the dust opacity) are investigated to assess how (in)appropriate the standard models are for supergiant B[e] star discs. Changing the temperature structure, and making simple dust opacity changes within the disc has little effect on the resultant continuum emission. By altering the density structure of the discs, the continuum may be accounted for by both models: the equatorial wind model requires a very flat density profile which is impossible to explain with any accelerating wind, and the viscous disc model's density structure is required to fall off less steeply with radius than would have been expected, although this may be explained from consideration of viscous processes in the disc. It is recognised that both theoretical interpretations have difficulties and unsolved problems.

Abstract:One-armed oscillation modes in the circumstellar discs of Be stars may explain the cyclical variations in their emission lines. We show that a three-dimensional effect, involving vertical motion and neglected in previous treatments, profoundly influences the dynamics. Using a secular theory of eccentric discs that reduces the problem to a second-order differential equation, we show that confined prograde modes are obtained for all reasonable disc temperatures and stellar rotation rates. We confirm these results using a numerical analysis of the full set of linearized equations for three-dimensional isothermal discs including viscous terms that couple the horizontal motions at different altitudes. In order to make these modes grow, viscous damping must be overcome by an excitation mechanism such as viscous overstability.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The viscous decretion disc (VDD) scenario has been used to model the observables of the Be stars. Its capability to predict individual observables has been confirmed for several Be stars. Here, we simultaneously analyse the spectroscopic and $BVI$-band photometric data for the Be star MT91-213 with the Monte Carlo radiative-transfer code hdust to determine the stellar parameters, geometry, and physical conditions for its circumstellar disc. MT91-213 is the primary component of a binary system whose companion is the pulsar PSR J2032+4127. We find that the VDD model can simultaneously reproduce the multiple observables qualitatively, but not quantitatively. We determine the mass of the primary star to be 13.1 ${\rm M}_{\odot }$ which is smaller than reported in the literature. We present a dynamical scenario for the evolving disc density from a diffuse to a dense phase. Also, we determine that the inclination of the disc is about 40$^{\circ }$ which means it is 20$^{\circ }$ tilted from the orbit of the secondary star. Our results indicate that the mass loss rate for MT91-213 is $\sim 10^{-7}$ to $10^{-6} {\rm M}_{\odot }\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ which is in agreement with the suggested values in the literature, required to explain the observed X-ray synchrotron luminosity, $L_\mathrm{x}$, for PSR J2032+4127.

The Infrared Continuum Sizes of Be Star Disks

Abstract:We present an analysis of the near-infrared continuum emission from the circumstellar gas disks of Be stars using a radiative transfer code for a parametrized version of the viscous decretion disk model. This isothermal gas model creates predicted images that we use to estimate the HWHM emission radius along the major axis of the projected disk and the spatially integrated flux excess at wavelengths of 1.7, 2.1, 4.8, 9, and 18 ?m. We discuss in detail the effect of the disk base density, inclination angle, stellar effective temperature, and other physical parameters on the derived disk sizes and color excesses. We calculate color excess estimates relative to the stellar V -band flux for a sample of 130 Be stars using photometry from 2MASS and the AKARI infrared camera all-sky survey. The color excess relations from our models make a good match of the observed color excesses of Be stars. We also present our results on the projected size of the disk as a function of wavelength for the classical Be star ? Tauri, and we show that the model predictions are consistent with interferometric observations in the H, K', and 12 \mu m bands.

Abstract:We revisit the viscous decretion disk (VDD) model of the classical Be star $\beta$ CMi as presented by \citet{klement} using an updated version of the radiative transfer code {\ttfamily HDUST}. A software bug was causing the mean intensities to be slightly underestimated in the equatorial region of the disk, with small but detectable effects on the disk temperature and emergent spectrum. The new model fixes an unexplained feature of the original model, which was able to reproduce the observations only when considering a dual density behavior: a steep density fall-off in the very inner parts of the disk followed by a shallower density profile. The new model is able to reproduce all the observables reasonably well using a single power-law for the density profile throughout the whole disk, as predicted by the VDD model. All the other original conclusions, most importantly the reported truncation of the disk at the distance of 35 stellar equatorial radii from the central star, remain unchanged.

Abstract:Massive stars can during their evolution reach the phase of critical (or very rapid, near-critical) rotation when further increase in rotation rate is no longer kinematically allowed. The mass ejection and angular momentum outward transport from such rapidly rotating star's equatorial surface may lead to formation and supports further existence of a circumstellar outflowing (stellar decretion) disk. The efficient mechanism for the outward transport of the mass and angular momentum is provided by the anomalous viscosity. The outer supersonic regions of the disks can extend up to a significantly large distance from the parent star, the exact radial extension is however basically unknown, partly due to the uncertainties in radial variations of temperature and viscosity. We study in detail the behavior of hydrodynamic quantities, i.e., the evolution of density, radial and azimuthal velocity, and angular momentum loss rate in stellar decretion disks out to extremely distant regions. We investigate the dependence of these physical characteristics on the distribution of temperature and viscosity. We also study the magnetorotational instability, which we regard to be the source of anomalous viscosity in such outflowing disks and to some extent we provide the preliminary models of the two-dimensional radially-vertically correlated distribution of the disk density and temperature. We developed our own two-dimensional hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic numerical code based on an explicit Eulerian finite difference scheme on staggered grid, including full Navier-Stokes viscosity. We use semianalytic approach to investigate the radial profile of magnetorotational instability, where on the base of the numerical time-dependent hydrodynamic model we analytically study the stability of outflowing disks submerged to the magnetic field of central star.

Abstract:The mechanism of X-ray outbursts in Be X-ray binaries remains a mystery, and understanding their circumstellar discs is crucial for a solution of the mass-transfer problem. In particular, it is important to identify the Be star activities (e.g. pulsations) that cause mass ejection and, hence, disc formation. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between optical flux oscillations and the infrared (IR) excess in a sample of five Be X-ray binaries. Applying the Lomb–Scargle technique to high-cadence optical light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ( ⁠| |⁠ ), we detected several significant oscillation modes in the 3–24 h period range for each source. We also measured the IR excess (a proxy for disc growth) of those five sources, using J -band light curves from Palomar Gattini-IR. In four of the five sources, we found anticorrelations between the IR excess and the amplitude of the main flux oscillation modes. This result is inconsistent with the conventional idea that non-radial pulsations drive mass ejections. We propose an alternative scenario where internal temperature variations in the Be star cause transitions between pulsation-active and mass-ejection-active states.

A Disk-Wind Model for the Near-Infrared Excess Emission in Protostars

Abstract:Protostellar systems, ranging from low-luminosity T Tauri and Herbig Ae stars to high-luminosity Herbig Be stars, exhibit a near-infrared (NIR) excess in their spectra that is dominated by a bump in the monochromatic luminosity with a peak near 3 microns. The bump can be approximated by a thermal emission component of temperature 1500 K that is of the order of the sublimation temperature of interstellar dust grains. In the currently popular "puffed up rim" scenario, the bump represents stellar radiation that propagates through the optically thin inner region of the surrounding accretion disk and is absorbed and reemitted by the dust that resides just beyond the dust sublimation radius, Rsub. However, this model cannot account for the strongest bumps measured in these sources, and it predicts a large secondary bounce in the interferometric visibility curve that is not observed. In this paper we present an alternative interpretation, which attributes the bump to reemission of stellar radiation by dust that is uplifted from the disk by a centrifugally driven wind. Winds of this type are a leading candidate for the origin of the strong outflows associated with protostars, and there is observational evidence for disk winds originating on scales ~Rsub. Using a newly constructed Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, we show that this model can account for the NIR excess emission even in bright Herbig Ae stars such as AB Auriga and MWC 275, and that it successfully reproduces the basic features of the visibilities measured in these protostars. We argue that a robust dusty outflow in these sources could be self-limiting to a relatively narrow launching region between Rsub and 2Rsub. Finally, we suggest that our model could also naturally account for the NIR and scattered-light variability exhibited by a source like MWC 275, which may be triggered by the uplifting of dust clouds from the disk.

Viscous propagation of mass flow variability in accretion discs

Abstract:We study mass flow rate through a disc resulting from a varying mass supply rate. Variable mass supply rate occurs, e.g., during disc state transitions, and in interacting eccentric binaries. It is, however, damped by the viscosity of the disc. Here, we calculate this damping in detail. We derive an analytical description of the propagation of the flow rate using the solution of Lynden-Bell & Pringle, in which the disc is assumed to extend to infinity. In particular, we derive the accretion-rate Green's function, and its Fourier transform, which gives the fractional damping at a given variability frequency. We then compare this model to that of a finite disc with the mass supply at its outer edge. We find significant differences with respect to the infinite disc solution, which we find to overestimate the viscous damping. In particular, the asymptotic form of the Green's function is power-law for the infinite disc and exponential for the finite one. We then find a simple fitting form for the latter, and also calculate its Fourier transform. In general, the damping becomes very strong when the viscous time at the outer edge of the disc becomes longer than the modulation time scale. We apply our results to a number of astrophysical systems. We find the effect is much stronger in low-mass X-ray binaries, where the disc size is comparable to that of the Roche lobe, than in high-mass binaries, where the wind-fed disc can have a much smaller size.

Numerical Simulation of Hot Accretion Flows (II): Nature, Origin, and Properties of Outflow and Their Possible Observational Applications

Abstract:Previous hydrodynamical (HD) and magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) numerical simulations of hot accretion flows have shown that the mass accretion rate decreases with decreasing radius. Two models have been proposed to explain this result. In the ADIOS model, the inward decrease of accretion rate is because of the loss of gas in the outflow. In the CDAF model, the gas is assumed to be locked in convective eddies, which results in the inward decrease of the accretion rate. We investigate the nature of inward decrease of accretion rate using HD and MHD simulations. We calculate various properties of inflow and outflow, including the mass flux, radial and rotational velocities, temperature, and the Bernoulli parameter ($Be$). Systematic and significant differences between inflow and outflow are found. These results suggest that the inflow and outflow are not dominated by convective turbulence, but are systematic inward and outward motion. We have also analyzed the convective stability of MHD accretion flow and found that they are convectively stable. These results indicate that the ADIOS scenario is favored. The different properties of inflow and outflow also suggest that the mechanisms of producing outflow in HD and MHD flows are buoyancy and centrifugal force associated with the magnetic field, respectively. The latter mechanism is similar to the Blandford & Payne mechanism. We also study the effect of initial conditions in the simulations. We find that the value of $Be$ is mainly determined by the value of $Be$ of the initial condition. We discuss some possible observational applications of our outflow model. These observations include the Fermi bubble observed in the Galaxy center, and winds widely observed in AGNs and black hole X-ray binaries.

Abstract:We adopt the tidal truncation model proposed by Negueruela and Okazaki for Be/X-ray binaries to investigate the influence of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) on Be-star disks. We show that the viscous decretion disks around Be stars are generally truncated ineffectively under the tidal force of IMBHs. Combining this with observations of Be/X-ray binaries, we suggest that Be/IMBH X-ray binaries may appear as recurrent luminous X-ray transients with quasi-periodic X-ray outbursts.
The Role of Outflows in dynamic of Advection Dominated Accretion Flows: a Self-Similar Solution

Abstract:The effects of outflow on the behavior of a viscous gaseous disc around a compact object in an advection-dominated state are examined in this paper. We suppose that the flow is steady, axisymmetric, and rotating. Also, we focus on the model in which the mass, the angular momentum, and the energy can be transported outward by outflow. Similar to the pioneering studies, we consider a power-law function for mass inflow rate as $\dot{M} \propto r^s$. We assume that the power index $s$ is proportional to the dimensionless thickness $H/R$ of disc. To analyze such a system, the hydrodynamic equations have extracted in cylindrical coordinates $(r,\varphi,z)$. Then, the flow equations were vertically integrated, and a set of self-similar solutions was got in the radial direction. Our solutions include three essential parameters: $\lambda$, $f$ and $\zeta$. The influence of the outflow on the dynamics of the disc is investigated by the $\lambda$ parameter. The degree of advection of flow is shown by the advection parameter $f$. Also, energy extraction from the disc by the outflow is showed by $\zeta$ parameter. Our findings demonstrate a significant correlation between the outflow parameters, flow advection parameter, and the temperature, thickness, and inflow-outflow rate of the disc. In addition, we explored the influence of these parameters on the power index $s$, too. The results of our study demonstrate that enhancing the outflow parameter or flow advection degree increases power index $s$, while extracting more energy through outflow decreases index $s$.

Investigating Kozai-Lidov Oscillations and Disc Tearing in Be Star Discs

Abstract:Recent simulations of Be stars in misaligned binary systems have revealed that misalignment between the disc and binary orbit can cause the disc to undergo Kozai-Lidov (KL) oscillations or disc-tearing. We build on our previous suite of three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of equal-mass systems by simulating eight new misaligned Be star binary systems, with mass-ratios of 0.1 and 0.5, or equal-mass systems with varying viscosity. We find the same phenomena occur as previously for mass ratios of 0.5, while the mass ratio of 0.1 does not cause KL oscillations or disc-tearing for the parameters examined. With increased viscosity in our equal-mass simulations, we show that these phenomena and other oscillations are damped out and do not occur. We also briefly compare two viscosity prescriptions and find they can produce the same qualitative disc evolution. Next, we use the radiative transfer code HDUST to predict observable trends of a KL oscillation, and show how the observables oscillate in sync with disc inclination and cause large changes in the polarization position angle. Our models generate highly complex line profiles, including triple-peak profiles that are known to occur in Be stars. The mapping between the SPH simulations and these triple-peak features gives us hints as to where they originate. Finally, we construct interferometric predictions of how a gap in the disc, produced by KL oscillations or disc-tearing, perturbs the visibility versus baseline curve at multiple wavelengths, and can cause large changes to the differential phase profile across an emission line.

A slim disc approach to external photoevaporation of discs

Abstract:The photoevaporation of protoplanetary discs by nearby massive stars present in their birth cluster plays a vital role in their evolution. Previous modelling assumes that the disc behaves like a classical Keplerian accretion disc out to a radius where the photoevaporative outflow is launched. There is then an abrupt change in the angular velocity profile, and the outflow is modelled by forcing the fluid parcels to conserve their specific angular momenta. Instead, we model externally photoevaporating discs using the slim disc formalism. The slim disc approach self consistently includes the advection of radial and angular momentum as well as angular momentum redistribution by internal viscous torques. Our resulting models produce a smooth transition from a rotationally supported Keplerian disc to a photoevaporative driven outflow, where this transition typically occurs over ~4-5 scale heights. The penetration of UV photons predominately sets the radius of the transition and the viscosity's strength plays a minor role. By studying the entrainment of dust particles in the outflow, we find a rapid change in the dust size and surface density distribution in the transition region due to the steep gas density gradients present. This rapid change in the dust properties leaves a potentially observable signature in the continuum spectral index of the disc at mm wavelengths. Using the slim disc formalism in future evolutionary calculations will reveal how both the gas and dust evolves in their outer regions and the observable imprints of the external photoevaporation process.

A two-dimensional perspective of the rotational evolution of rapidly rotating intermediate-mass stars. Implications for the formation of single Be stars

Abstract:Recently, the first successful attempt at computing stellar structure and evolution models in two dimensions was presented with models that include centrifugal deformation and self-consistently compute the velocity field. The aim of the present study is to explore the rotational evolution of two-dimensional models of stars rotating at a significant fraction of their critical angular velocity. From the predictions of these models, we aim to improve our understanding of the formation of single Be stars. Using the code, which solves the stellar structure of a rotating star in two dimensions with time evolution, we computed evolution tracks of stars of between 4 and 10 for initial rotation rates ranging between 60 and 90 of the critical rotation rate. Furthermore, we compute models for both a Galactic metallicity and an SMC metallicity. A minimum initial rotation rate at the start of the main sequence is needed to spin up the star to critical rotation within its main sequence lifetime. This threshold depends on the stellar mass, and increases with increasing mass. The models do not predict any stars above 8 to reach (near-)critical rotation during the main sequence. Furthermore, we find the minimum threshold of initial angular velocity is lower for SMC metallicity than for Galactic metallicity, which is in agreement with the increased fraction of observed Be stars in lower metallicity environments. The strong difference in the rotational evolution between different masses is not predicted by any one-dimensional stellar evolution models. Our self-consistent two-dimensional stellar evolution models provide further insight into the rotational evolution of intermediate-mass stars, and our predictions are consistent with observations of velocity distributions and the fraction of Be stars amongst B-type stars. We find that stars with a mass above 8 do not increase their fraction of critical rotation during the main sequence. As a fraction of stars above 8 have been observed to display the Be phenomenon, other processes or formation channels must be at play, or, alternatively, critical rotation is not required for the Be phenomenon above this mass.

Properties of the H-alpha-emitting Circumstellar Regions of Be Stars

Abstract:Long-baseline interferometric observations obtained with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer of the H-alpha-emitting envelopes of the Be stars eta Tauri and beta Canis Minoris are presented. For compatibility with the previously published interferometric results in the literature of other Be stars, circularly symmetric and elliptical Gaussian models were fitted to the calibrated H-alpha observations. The models are sufficient in characterizing the angular distribution of the H-alpha-emitting circumstellar material associated with these Be stars. To study the correlations between the various model parameters and the stellar properties, the model parameters for eta Tau and beta CMi were combined with data for other Be stars from the literature. After accounting for the different distances to the sources and stellar continuum flux levels, it was possible to study the relationship between the net H-alpha emission and the physical extent of the H-alpha-emitting circumstellar region. A clear dependence of the net H-alpha emission on the linear size of the emitting region is demonstrated and these results are consistent with an optically thick line emission that is directly proportional to the effective area of the emitting disk. Within the small sample of stars considered in this analysis, no clear dependence on the spectral type or stellar rotation is found, although the results do suggest that hotter stars might have more extended H-alpha-emitting regions.

Beyond the standard accretion disc model: coupled magnetic disc--corona solutions with a physically motivated viscosity law

Abstract:We present a systematic, analytical study of geometrically thin, optically thick accretion disc solutions for magnetized turbulent flows, with an alpha-like viscosity prescription. Under the only assumptions that (1) Magneto-Rotational instability (MRI) generates the turbulence that produces the anomalous viscosity needed for accretion to proceed, and that (2) the magnetic field amplified by the instability saturates due to buoyant vertical escape, we are able to self-consistently solve the disc structure equations including the fraction of power, f, that is carried off by vertical Poynting flux (and likely dissipated outside the optically thick disc). For low-viscosity discs, we obtain stable high-f solutions at low accretion rates, when gas pressure dominates, and unstable, low-f, radiation pressure dominated solutions at high accretion rates. For high viscosity discs, instead, a new thermally and viscously stable, radiation pressure dominated solution is found, characterized by f~1 and appearing only above a critical accretion rate (of the order of few tenths of the Eddington one). We discuss the regimes of validity of our assumptions, and the astrophysical relevance of our solutions. We conclude that our newly discovered thin disc solutions, possibly accompanied by powerful, magnetically dominated coronae and outflows, should be seriously considered as models for black holes accreting at super-Eddington rates.

Abstract:Black hole X-ray binaries are ideal environments to study the accretion phenomena in strong gravitational potentials. These systems undergo dramatic accretion state transitions and analysis of the X-ray spectra is used to probe the properties of the accretion disc and its evolution. In this work, we present a systematic investigation of $\sim$1800 spectra obtained by RXTE PCA observations of GRO J1655-40 and LMC X-3 to explore the nature of the accretion disc via non-relativistic and relativistic disc models describing the thermal emission in black-hole X-ray binaries. We demonstrate that the non-relativistic modelling throughout an outburst with the phenomenological multi-colour disc model DISKBB yields significantly lower and often unphysical inner disc radii and correspondingly higher ($\sim$50-60\%) disc temperatures compared to its relativistic counterparts KYNBB and KERRBB. We obtained the dimensionless spin parameters of $a_{*}=0.774 \pm 0.069 $ and $a_{*}=0.752 \pm 0.061 $ for GRO J1655-40 with KERRBB and KYNBB, respectively. We report a spin value of $a_{*}=0.098 \pm 0.063$ for LMC X-3 using the updated black hole mass of 6.98 ${M_{\odot}}$. Both measurements are consistent with the previous studies. Using our results, we highlight the importance of self-consistent modelling of the thermal emission, especially when estimating the spin with the continuum-fitting method which assumes the disc terminates at the innermost stable circular orbit at all times.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The bright and understudied classical Be star HD 6226 has exhibited multiple outbursts in the last several years during which the star grew a viscous decretion disc. We analyse 659 optical spectra of the system collected from 2017 to 2020, along with a ultraviolet spectrum from the Hubble Space Telescope and high cadence photometry from both Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT) survey. We find that the star has a spectral type of B2.5IIIe, with a rotation rate of 74 per cent of critical. The star is nearly pole-on with an inclination of 13${_{.}^{\circ}}$4. We confirm the spectroscopic pulsational properties previously reported, and report on three photometric oscillations from KELT photometry. The outbursting behaviour is studied with equivalent width measurements of H α and H β, and the variations in both of these can be quantitatively explained with two frequencies through a Fourier analysis. One of the frequencies for the emission outbursts is equal to the difference between two photometric oscillations, linking these pulsation modes to the mass ejection mechanism for some outbursts. During the TESS observation time period of 2019 October 7 to 2019 November 2, the star was building a disc. With a large data set of H α and H β spectroscopy, we are able to determine the time-scales of dissipation in both of these lines, similar to past work on Be stars that has been done with optical photometry. HD 6226 is an ideal target with which to study the Be disc-evolution given its apparent periodic nature, allowing for targeted observations with other facilities in the future.

Abstract:The dynamics of magnetic flux tubes (MFTs) in the accretion disk of typical Herbig Ae/Be star with fossil large-scale magnetic field is modeled taking into account the buoyant and drag forces, radiative heat exchange with the surrounding gas, and the magnetic field of the disk. The structure of the disk is simulated using our magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, taking into account the heating of the surface layers of the disk with the stellar radiation. The simulations show that MFTs periodically rise from the innermost region of the disk with speeds up to $10-12$ km s$^{-1}$. MFTs experience decaying magnetic oscillations under the action of the external magnetic field near the disk's surface. The oscillation period increases with distance from the star and initial plasma beta of the MFT, ranging from several hours at $r=0.012$ au up to several months at $r=1$ au. The oscillations are characterized by pulsations of the MFT's characteristics including its temperature. We argue that the oscillations can produce observed IR-variability of Herbig Ae/Be stars, which would be more intense than in the case of T Tauri stars, since the disks of Herbig Ae/Be stars are hotter, denser and have stronger magnetic field.
