Abstract:The metal-insulator transition, and the associated magnetic transition, in the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) regime of the one-orbital model for manganites is here studied using Monte Carlo (MC) techniques. Both cooperative oxygen lattice distortions and a finite superexchange coupling among the $t_{\rm 2g}$ spins are included in our investigations. Charge and spin correlations are studied. In the CMR regime, a strong competition between the ferromagnetic metallic and antiferromagnetic charge-ordered insulating states is observed. This competition is shown to be important to understand the resistivity peak that appears near the critical temperature. Moreover, it is argued that the system is dynamically inhomogeneous, with short-range charge and spin correlations that slowly evolve with MC time, producing the glassy characteristics of the CMR state. The local density-of-states (LDOS) is also investigated, and a pseudogap (PG) is found to exist in the CMR temperature range. The width of the PG in the LDOS is calculated and directly compared with recent scanning-tunneling-spectroscopy (STS) experimental results. The agreement between our calculation and the experiment suggests that the depletion of the conductance at low bias observed experimentally is a reflection on the existence of a PG in the LDOS spectra, as opposed to a hard gap. The apparent homogeneity observed via STS techniques could be caused by the slow time characteristics of this probe. Faster experimental methods should unveil a rather inhomogeneous state in the CMR regime, as already observed in neutron scattering experiments.

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that some colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) materials exhibit a percolation transition. The conductivity exponent varies substantially with or without an external magnetic field. This finding prompted us to carry out theoretical studies of percolation transition in CMR systems. We find that the percolation transition coincides with the magnetic transition, and therefore the magnetic field has a large effect on the percolation transition. Using a real-space-renormalization method and numerical calculations for two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models, we obtain the conductivity exponent t to be 5.3 (3D) and 3.3 (2D) without a magnetic field, and 1.7 (3D) and 1.4 (2D) with a magnetic field.
On Algebraic Singularities, Finite Graphs and D-Brane Gauge Theories: A String Theoretic Perspective

Abstract:In this writing we shall address certain beautiful inter-relations between the construction of 4-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and resolution of algebraic singularities, from the perspective of String Theory. We review in some detail the requisite background in both the mathematics, such as orbifolds, symplectic quotients and quiver representations, as well as the physics, such as gauged linear sigma models, geometrical engineering, Hanany-Witten setups and D-brane probes. We investigate aspects of world-volume gauge dynamics using D-brane resolutions of various Calabi-Yau singularities, notably Gorenstein quotients and toric singularities. Attention will be paid to the general methodology of constructing gauge theories for these singular backgrounds, with and without the presence of the NS-NS B-field, as well as the T-duals to brane setups and branes wrapping cycles in the mirror geometry. Applications of such diverse and elegant mathematics as crepant resolution of algebraic singularities, representation of finite groups and finite graphs, modular invariants of affine Lie algebras, etc. will naturally arise. Various viewpoints and generalisations of McKay's Correspondence will also be considered. The present work is a transcription of excerpts from the first three volumes of the author's PhD thesis which was written under the direction of Prof. A. Hanany - to whom he is much indebted - at the Centre for Theoretical Physics of MIT, and which, at the suggestion of friends, he posts to the ArXiv pro hac vice; it is his sincerest wish that the ensuing pages might be of some small use to the beginning student.

Abstract:We report on transient reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr measurements from the colossal magnetoresistance compounds La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO), La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO), and Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) as a function of temperature and magnetic field. In LCMO and LSMO, an unusually slow (similar to 1 mu s) carrier relaxation component is revealed in the transient reflectivity traces. The component disappears as the transition temperature is approached from below. This slow decay process is attributed to spin-lattice relaxation of carriers in localized states and shows a close relationship with the spectral weight near the Fermi surface. The attribution is further supported by our pump-probe magneto-optical Kerr measurements. In addition to the clear observation of magnetic precessions, a long-lived exponentially decaying background reflects the spin-related relaxation of photoexcited electrons. In contrast to manganites, the temperature dependence of transient reflectivity is negligible, although there is a significant change in transient Kerr rotation in SFMO. Our results show that the dynamics of charge, spin, and lattice are strongly correlated with each other in the manganites, but the spin degree of freedom is thermally insulated from the electron and lattice systems.

Abstract:Polarons - fermionic charge carriers bearing a strong companion lattice deformation - exhibit a natural tendency for self-localization due to the recursive interaction between electrons and the lattice. While polarons are ubiquitous in insulators, how they evolve in transitions to metallic and superconducting states in quantum materials remains an open question. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to track the electron-lattice coupling in the colossal magneto-resistive bi-layer manganite La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ across its metal-to-insulator transition. The response in the insulating high-temperature state features harmonic emissions of a dispersionless oxygen phonon at small energy transfer. Upon cooling into the metallic state, we observe a drastic redistribution of spectral weight from the region of these harmonic emissions to a broad high energy continuum. In concert with theoretical calculations, we show that this evolution implies a shift in electron-lattice coupling from static to dynamic lattice distortions that leads to a distinct polaronic ground state in the low temperature metallic phase - a dynamic polaron liquid.

Abstract:We report on three different experiments on high temperature superconducting (HTS) cuprates and colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganites, which clearly bring out some of the important similarities and differences between the two material systems. The experiments involve the measurement of temperature dependence of the mean squared displacement of Cu and Mn ions from their equilibrium site in the case of the cuprates and the manganites, respectively, and their correlation with the transport property. In both cases the key ions in the materials (Cu for HTS and Mn for CMR) exhibit vibration amplitudes larger than that of ions in simple Debye solids and clearly show discontinuities in the vibration amplitudes as a function of temperature close to the phase transition temperatures. These point to the unequivocal participation of phonons in the transport processes and possibly in the onset of the phase transitions (i.e. superconductivity and ferromagnetism). The second set of experiments, involves femtosecond optical excitation of micro-strip resistors made of cuprates or manganites, and the subsequent measurement of the changes in the impedance on a 20 ps time scale. In the case of the manganites one measures the time scales involved in the ionization and reformation of a Jahn–Teller polaron and also the decay times of magnon excitors. In the case of the cuprates one sees a highly efficient pair breaking process with a very sharp resonance, with a width of only 100 meV, which is indicative of the role of a large intermediate excitation in the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. In the third experiment, spin-polarized electrons injected from a manganite electrode into a superconductor are observed to break pairs at a rate far larger than unpolarized electrons. This effect seems very orientation dependent for the case of YBCO, which may shed new light on the transport of quasi-particles at YBCO interfaces.

Abstract:By performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the bilayer colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite, La_2-2xSr_1+2xMn_2O_7, we provide the complete mapping of the Fermi level spectral weight topology. Clear and unambiguous bilayer splitting of the in-plane 3d_x^2-y^2 band, mapped throughout the Brillouin zone, and the full mapping of the 3d_3z^2-r^2 band are reported. Peculiar doping and temperature dependencies of these bands imply that as transition from the ferromagnetic metallic phase approaches, either as a function of doping or temperature, coherence along the c-axis between planes within the bilayer is lost, resulting in reduced interplane coupling. These results suggest that interplane coupling plays a large role in the CMR transition.

Abstract:Within massive gravity, we construct a gravity dual for insulator/metal phase transition and colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect found in some manganese oxides materials. In heavy graviton limit, a remarkable magnetic-field-sensitive DC resistivity peak appears at the Curie temperature, where an insulator/metal phase transition happens and the magnetoresistance is scaled with the square of field-induced magnetization. We find that metallic and insulating phases coexist below the Curie point and the relation with the electronic phase separation is discussed.

Colossal Resistivity Change Besides Magnetoresistance: an Extended Theoretical Framework for Electronic Transport of Manganites

Abstract:Current theoretical approaches to manganites mainly stem from magnetic framework, in which the electronic transport is thought to be spin-dependent and the double exchange mechanism plays a core role. However, quite a number of experimental observations can yet not be reasonably explained. For example, multiplicate insulator-metal transitions and resistivity reduction induced by perturbations other than magnetic field, such as electric current, are not well understood. A comprehensive analysis on earlier extensive studies is performed and two types of origins for resistivity change are highlighted. Besides the insulated-to-metallic transition induced by external field such as magnetic field, the insulated-to-insulated transition induced extrinsically is even a more important source for the colossal resistivity change. We propose an extended framework for the electronic transport of manganites, in which the contribution of charge degree of freedom is given a special priority.

Abstract:The e(g)-orbital double-exchange mechanism as the core of physics of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites is well known, which usually covers up the role of super-exchange at the t(2g)-orbitals. The role of the double-exchange mechanism is maximized in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, leading to the concurrent metal-insulator transition and ferromagnetic transition as well as CMR effect. In this work, by a set of synchronous Ru-substitution and Ca-substitution experiments on La0.7-yCa0.3+yMn1-yRuyO3, we demonstrate that the optimal ferromagnetism in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 can be further enhanced. It is also found that the metal-insulator transition and magnetic transition can be separately modulated. By well-designed experimental schemes with which the Mn3+-Mn4+ double-exchange is damaged as weakly as possible, it is revealed that this ferromagnetism enhancement is attributed to the Mn-Ru t(2g) ferromagnetic super-exchange. The present work allows a platform on which the electro-transport and magnetism of rare-earth manganites can be controlled by means of the t(2g)-orbital physics of strongly correlated transition metal oxides.

Abstract:The metamagnetic transition, magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance effects are investigated in polycrystalline Sm0.55(Sr0.5Ca0.5)0.45MnO3 (SSCMO) manganite. A sharp magnetization jump at Curie temperature (TC) 73.5K with large thermal hysteresis is observed. Magnetic measurements and Arrott plots analysis indicate that the transition is first order in nature. Under a low magnetic field change of 1T, the magnetic entropy change exhibits a peak value of −ΔSMmax(T)=4.01J/kg K with relative cooling power (RCP) value of 44.1J/kg in the vicinity of TC. The mechanism of charge conduction in insulator phase is polaron transport. Large negative magnetoresistance ratio with value of ~99% is obtained within a broad temperature range below metal insulator transition temperature under 1T magnetic field. These results indicate the potential applications of SSCMO in magnetic refrigeration and spintronics devices.
Composite Polaron Mechanism for Colossal Magnetoresistance in Perovskite Manganites

Abstract:The mechanism of carriers accompanied by spin-wave cloud and Jahn–Teller phononic cloud, called composite polaron, is proposed to explain the unusual transport and thermodynamic properties in perovskite manganites over all the temperature and magnetic field range. It is shown that the energy bandwidth of composite polarons is strongly renormalized with the increases of temperature and magnetic field, the bandwidth narrows with elevated temperature, while it broadens with increasing magnetic field. The resistivity of composite polarons increases with elevated temperature strongly, reaches a maximum near the Curie temperature TC, and decreases with the increase of magnetic field. The specific heat of composite polarons also exhibits a maximum near TC. These results agree with experiments in a broad temperature and magnetic field range, suggesting that composite polarons contribute to the unusual properties in manganites.

Abstract:A new minimal model is constructed for the doped manganese oxides which exhibit colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), involving broad spin-majority conduction band as well as nearly localised spin-minority electron states. A simple mean field analysis yields a temperature-dependent hybridised band structure with suppressed carrier weight at the Fermi level. Spin stiffness is complex, indicating unusually strong spin wave damping. Experimental and theoretical investigations are needed to further verify the relevance of the proposed model.

Abstract:Recent experiments suggest a new paradigm towards novel colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in a family of materials EuM$_2$X$_2$(M=Cd, In, Zn; X=P, As), distinct from the traditional avenues involving Kondo-RKKY crossovers, magnetic phase transitions with structural distortions, or topological phase transitions. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore their origin, particularly focusing on EuCd$_2$P$_2$. While the low-energy spectral weight royally tracks that of the resistivity anomaly near the temperature with maximum magnetoresistance (T$_{MR}$) as expected from transport-spectroscopy correspondence, the spectra are completely incoherent and strongly suppressed with no hint of a Landau quasiparticle. Using systematic material and temperature dependence investigation complemented by theory, we attribute this non-quasiparticle caricature to the strong presence of entangled magnetic and lattice interactions, a characteristic enabled by the $p$-$f$ mixing. Given the known presence of ferromagnetic clusters, this naturally points to the origin of CMR being the scattering of spin-polarized polarons at the boundaries of ferromagnetic clusters. These results are not only illuminating to investigate the strong correlations and topology in EuCd$_2$X$_2$ family, but, in a broader view, exemplify how multiple cooperative interactions can give rise to extraordinary behaviors in condensed matter systems.

Abstract:The effect of an exchange field on electrical transport in thin films of metallic ferromagnetic manganites has been investigated. The exchange field was induced both by direct exchange coupling in a ferromagnet/antiferromagnet multilayer and by indirect exchange interaction in a ferromagnet/paramagnet superlattice. The electrical resistance of the manganite layers was found to be determined by the absolute value of the vector sum of the effective exchange field and the external magnetic field.

Abstract: The strange-metal state is a crucial problem in condensed matter physics highlighted by its ubiquity in almost all major correlated systems[1-7]. Its understanding could provide important insight into high-Tc superconductivity[2] and quantum criticality[8]. However, with the Fermi liquid theory failing in strange metals, understanding the highly unconventional behaviors has been a long-standing challenge. Fundamental aspects of strange metals remain elusive, including the nature of their charge carriers[1]. Here, we report the observation of a giant Nernst response in the strange-metal state in a two-dimensional superconductor 2M-WS2. A giant Nernst coefficient comparable to the vortex Nernst signal in superconducting cuprates, and its high sensitivity to carrier mobility, are found when the system enters the strange-metal state from the Fermi liquid state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the giant Nernst peak rule out the relevance of both Landau quasiparticles and superconductivity. Instead, the giant Nernst peak at the crossover indicates a dramatic change in carrier entropy when entering the strange-metal state. The presence of such an anomalous Nernst response is further confirmed in other iconic strange metals, suggesting its universality and places stringent experimental constraints on the mechanism of strange metals.

Abstract:Transport properties of giant magnetoresistance (MR) junction consisting of trilayer Co2CrSi/Cu2CrAl/Co2CrSi Heusler alloys (L21) are studied using first-principles approach based on density functional theory and the non-equilibrium Green's function method. Highly conductive channels are found in almost the entire k-plane when the magnetizations of the electrodes are parallel, while they are completely blocked in the antiparallel configuration, which leads to a high magnetoresistance ratio (the pessimistic MR ratio is nearly 100%). Furthermore, the calculated I-V curve shows that the device behaves as a good spin valve with a considerable disparity in currents under the parallel and antiparallel magnetic configurations of the electrodes. The Co2CrSi/Cu2CrAl/Co2CrSi junction could be useful for high-performance all-metallic current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance reading head for the next generation high density magnetic storage.

Abstract:The paramagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic metal transition in Lanthanum manganites and the associated magnetoresistive phenomena is treated by considering the localization due to random hopping induced by slowly fluctuating spin configurations and electron-electron interactions. The transition temperature and its variation with composition is derived. The primary effect of the magnetic field on transport is to alter the localization length, an effect which is enhanced as the magnetic susceptibility increases. Expressions for the conductivity, its variation with magnetic field, and its connection with magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic phase are given and can be tested with further experiments.
