Abstract:High-energy collisions of cosmic-ray nuclei with interstellar gas are believed to be the mechanism producing the majority of cosmic ray antiprotons. Due to the kinematics of the process they are created with a nonzero momentum; the characteristic spectral shape with a maximum at ~2 GeV and a sharp decrease towards lower energies makes antiprotons a unique probe of models for particle propagation in the Galaxy and modulation in the heliosphere. On the other hand, accurate calculation of the secondary antiproton flux provides a ``background'' for searches for exotic signals from the annihilation of supersymmetric particles and primordial black hole evaporation. Recently new data with large statistics on both low and high energy antiproton fluxes have become available which allow such tests to be performed. We use our propagation code GALPROP to calculate interstellar cosmic-ray propagation for a variety of models. We show that there is no simple model capable of accurately describing the whole variety of data: boron/carbon and sub-iron/iron ratios, spectra of protons, helium, antiprotons, positrons, electrons, and diffuse gamma rays. We find that only a model with a break in the diffusion coefficient plus convection can reproduce measurements of cosmic-ray species, and the reproduction of primaries (p, He) can be further improved by introducing a break in the primary injection spectra. For our best-fit model we make predictions of proton and antiproton fluxes near the Earth for different modulation levels and magnetic polarity using a steady-state drift model of propagation in the heliosphere.

Possible dark matter annihilation signal in the AMS-02 antiproton data

Abstract:Using the latest AMS-02 cosmic ray antiproton flux data, we search for potential dark matter annihilation signal. The background parameters about the propagation, source injection, and solar modulation are not assumed {\it a priori}, but based on the results inferred from the recent B/C ratio and proton data measurements instead. The possible dark matter signal is incorporated into the model self-consistently under a Bayesian framework. Compared with the astrophysical background only hypothesis, we find that a dark matter signal is favored. The rest mass of the dark matter particles is $\sim 20-80$ GeV and the velocity-averaged hadronic annihilation cross section is about $(0.2-5)\times 10^{-26}$ cm$^{3}$s$^{-1}$, in agreement with that needed to account for the Galactic center GeV excess and/or the weak GeV emission from dwarf spheroidal galaxies Reticulum 2 and Tucana III. Tight constraints on the dark matter annihilation models are also set in a wide mass region.

A Model Independent Method to Study Dark Matter Induced Leptons and Gamma Rays

Abstract:By using recent data, we directly determine the dark matter (DM) inducede^± spectrum at the source from experimental measurements at the earth,without reference to specific particle physics models. The DM induced gammarays emitted via inverse Compton scattering are then obtained in a modelindependent way. However the results depend on the choice of the astrophysicale^± background, which is not reliably known. Nevertheless, we calculate, asan illustration, the fluxes of gamma rays from the Fornax cluster in thedecaying DM scenario with various astrophysical e^± backgrounds. Withoutany assumptions on details of the DM model, the predictions turn out to beeither in disagreement with or only marginally below the upper limits measuredrecently by the Fermi-LAT Collaboration. In addition, these DM induced ICSgamma rays in the GeV range are shown to be almost independent of choices ofcosmic ray propagation model and of DM density profile, when a givenastrophysical e^± background is assumed. This provides a strong constrainton decaying DM scenario as the gamma rays may be produced in other processesbesides inverse Compton scattering, such as the bremsstrahlung and neutral piondecays.

Constraining the dark matter interpretation of the positron excess with $γ$-ray data

Abstract:The particle origin of dark matter (DM) is still one of the main puzzles in modern physics. One of the most promising search strategy to detect DM at laboratories is through the indirect search of cosmic particles that are produced from DM annihilation in space. In particular, the flux of cosmic positrons has been measured with high precision by the AMS-02 experiment demonstrating that an excess above 10 GeV, with respect to the secondary production, is present. We study in this paper the possible DM origin of the positron excess finding the values of the DM mass $M$ and annihilation cross section $\langle \sigma v \rangle$ that are needed to fit high-energy positron data. In particular, we find that for DM annihilating into $b\bar{b}$ it is required to have $M=43$ TeV and $\langle \sigma v \rangle = 10^{-21}$ cm$^3$/s while for $\tau^+\tau^-$ $M=2$ TeV and $\langle \sigma v \rangle = 3\times 10^{-23}$ cm$^3$/s. If DM produce positrons, they are expected to generate gamma rays from the center of the Milky Way and around dwarf galaxy satellites of the Galaxy. We thus combine the values for the DM mass and annihilation cross section obtained with the fit to AMS-02 positron data with the upper limits derived with the non-detection of $\gamma$ rays with HESS in the direction of the Galactic center and Fermi-LAT for the combined analysis of dwarf galaxies. The main result of the paper is that only DM annihilating into $\mu^+ \mu^-$ with a mass around 500 GeV and $\langle \sigma v \rangle = 4\times 10^{-24}$ cm$^3$/s can fit AMS-02 data and be compatible with the upper limits found with $\gamma$ rays. As for the $\tau^+ \tau^-$ ($b\bar{b}$) channel, DM can contribute at most at a few tens $\%$ (a few \%) level.

Abstract:We study sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles that may annihilate or decay into Standard Model particles producing an exotic injection component in the Milky Way that leaves an imprint in both photon and cosmic-ray (CR) fluxes. Specifically, the DM particles may annihilate or decay into e + e − , μ + μ − , or π + π − and may radiate photons through their e ± products. The resulting e ± products can be directly observed in probes such as Voyager 1. Alternatively, the e ± products may produce bremsstrahlung radiation and upscatter the low-energy Galactic photon fields via the inverse Compton process, generating a broad emission from X-ray to γ-ray energies observable in experiments such as XMM-Newton. We find that we get a significant improvement in the DM annihilation and decay constraints from XMM-Newton (excluding thermally averaged cross sections of 10 −31 cm 3 s −1 ≲ 〈σ v〉 ≲ 10 −26 cm 3 s −1 and decay lifetimes of 10 26 s ≲ τ ≲ 10 28 s, respectively) by including best-fit CR propagation and diffusion parameters. This yields the strongest astrophysical constraints for this mass range of DM of 1 MeV to a few GeV and even surpasses cosmological bounds across a wide range of masses as well.

On the Possible Asymmetry in Gamma Rays from Andromeda Due to Inverse Compton Scattering of Star Light on Electrons from Dark Matter Annihilation

Abstract:Dark matter is a popular candidate to a new source of primary-charged particles, especially positrons in cosmic rays, which are proposed to account for observable anomalies. While this hypothesis of decaying or annihilating DM is mostly applied for our Galaxy, it could possibly lead to some interesting phenomena when applied for the other ones. In this work, we look into the hypothetical asymmetry in gamma radiation from the upper and lower hemisphere of the dark matter halo of the Andromeda galaxy due to inverse Compton scattering of starlight on the DM-produced electrons and positrons. While our 2D toy model raises expectations for the possible effect, a more complex approach gives negligible effect for the dark halo case, but shows some prospects for a dark disk~model.

Abstract:We study the cosmic ray antiprotons with updated constraints on the propagation, proton injection, and solar modulation parameters based on the newest AMS-02 data near the Earth and Voyager data in the local interstellar space, and on the cross section of antiproton production due to proton-proton collisions based on new collider data. We use a Bayesian approach to properly consider the uncertainties of the model predictions of both the background and the dark matter (DM) annihilation components of antiprotons. We find that including an extra component of antiprotons from the annihilation of DM particles into a pair of quarks can improve the fit to the AMS-02 antiproton data considerably. The favored mass of DM particles is about 60∼100 GeV, and the annihilation cross section is just at the level of the thermal production of DM (⟨σv⟩ ∼ O(10−26) cm3 s−1).
Gamma Rays from Annihilations at the Galactic Center in a Physical Dark Matter Distribution

Abstract:We discuss the gamma-ray signal to be expected from dark matter (DM)annihilations at the Galactic Center. To describe the DM distribution in the Galactic halo we base on the Jeans equation for self-gravitating, anisotropic equilibria. In solving the Jeans equation, we adopt the specific correlation between the density \rho(r) and the velocity dispersion \sigma^2_r(r) expressed by the powerlaw behavior of the DM `entropy' K= \sigma_r^2/\rho^{2/3} ~ r^\alpha with \alpha ~ 1.25-1.3. Indicated (among others) by several recent N-body simulations, this correlation is privileged by the form of the radial pressure term in the Jeans equation, and yields a main body profile consistent with the classic self-similar development of DM halos. In addition, we require the Jeans solutions to satisfy regular boundary conditions both at the center (finite pressure, round gravitational potential) and in the outskirts (finite overall mass). With these building blocks we derive physical solutions, dubbed `\alpha-profiles'. We find the one with \alpha=1.25, suitable for the Galaxy halo, to be intrinsically flatter at the center relative to the empirical NFW formula, yet steeper than the empirical Einasto profile. So on scales of 10^{-1} deg it yields annihilation fluxes lower by a factor 5 than the former yet higher by a factor 10 than the latter; such fluxes will eventually fall within the reach of the Fermi satellite. We show the effectiveness of the \alpha-profile in relieving the astrophysical uncertainties related to the macroscopic DM distribution, and discuss its expected performance as a tool instrumental to interpret the upcoming gamma-ray data in terms of DM annihilation.

Abstract:The observed anomalous excess of high-energy cosmic ray (CR) positrons is widely discussed as possible indirect evidence for dark matter (DM). However, any source of cosmic positrons is inevitably the source of gamma radiation. The least model dependent test of CR anomalies interpretation via DM particles decays (or annihilation) is connected with gamma-ray background due to gamma overproduction in such processes. In this work, we impose an observational constraint on gamma ray production from DM. Then, we study the possible suppression of gamma yield in the DM decays into identical final fermions. Such DM particles arise in the multi-component dark atom model. The influence of the interaction vertices on the gamma suppression was also considered. No essential gamma suppression effects are found. However, some minor ones are revealed.
Propagation of secondary antiprotons and cosmic rays in the Galaxy

Abstract:Recent measurements of the cosmic ray (CR) antiproton flux have been shown to challenge existing CR propagation models. It was shown that the reacceleration models designed to match secondary to primary nuclei ratios (e.g., B/C) produce too few antiprotons. In the present paper we discuss one possibility to overcome these difficulties. Using the measured antiproton flux AND B/C ratio to fix the diffusion coefficient, we show that the spectra of primary nuclei as measured in the heliosphere may contain a fresh local "unprocessed" component at low energies perhaps associated with the Local Bubble, thus decreasing the measured secondary to primary nuclei ratio. The independent evidence for SN activity in the solar vicinity in the last few Myr supports this idea. The model reproduces antiprotons, B/C ratio, and elemental abundances up to Ni (Z<=28). Calculated isotopic distributions of Be and B are in perfect agreement with CR data. The abundances of three "radioactive clock" isotopes in CR, 10Be, 26Al, 36Cl, are all consistent and indicate a halo size z_h~4 kpc based on the most accurate data taken by the ACE spacecraft.

Abstract:AMS-02 provided the unprecedented statistics in the measurement of the positron fraction from cosmic rays. That may offer a unique opportunity to distinguish the positron spectrum coming from various dark matter (DM) annihilation channels, if DM is the source of this positron excess. Therefore, we consider the scenario that the DM can annihilate into leptonic, quark, and massive gauge-boson channels simultaneously with floating branching ratios to test this hypothesis. We also study the impacts from MAX, MED, MIN, and DC diffusion models as well as from isothermal, NFW, and Einasto DM density profiles on our results. We found two parameter regions that can satisfy both AMS-02 e(+)/e(+)+e(-) and (p) over bar /p data sets at 95% C.L.: (i) under the NFW-MIN combination with M-chi subset of [10, 30] TeV, and (ii) under the Einasto-DC combination with M-chi subset of [500, 1500] GeV.
Dark matter decay in the Milky Way halo

Abstract:Dark matter may be detected in X-ray decay, including from the decay of the dark matter particles that make up the Milky Way (MW) halo. We use a range of density profiles to compute X-ray line intensity profiles, with a focus on the resonantly produced sterile neutrino dark matter candidate. Compared to the Navarro--Frenk--White density profile, we show that using an adiabatically contracted halo profile suppresses the line intensity in the halo outskirts and enhances it in the Galactic Centre (GC), although this enhancement is eliminated by the likely presence of a core within 3~kpc. Comparing our results to MW halo observations, other X-ray observations, and structure formation constraints implies a sterile neutrino mixing angle parameter $s_{11}\equiv\sin^{2}(2\theta)\times10^{11}\sim[3,4]$ (particle lifetime $\tau_{28}\equiv\tau/(10^{28}\mathrm{sec})\sim[1.0,1.3]$), which is nevertheless is strong tension with some reported non-detections. We make predictions for the likely decay flux that the XRISM satellite would measure in the GC, plus the Virgo and Perseus clusters, and outline further steps to determine whether the dark matter is indeed resonantly produced sterile neutrinos as detected in X-ray decay.

Nature of M31 gamma-ray halo in relation to dark matter annihilation

Abstract:The present work analyzes various aspects of M31 gamma-ray halo emission in its relation to annihilating dark matter (DM). The main aspect is the predicted effect of asymmetry of the intensity of emission due to inverse Compton scattering (ICS) of a possible population of relativistic electrons and positrons ($e^\pm$) in the galactic halo on starlight photons. This asymmetry is expected to exist around the major galactic axis, and arises due to anisotropy of the interstellar radiation field and the inclination of M31. ICS emission and its asymmetry were modeled by GALPROP code for the trial case of $e^\pm$ generated by annihilating weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with various properties. The asymmetry was obtained to appear at photon energies above $\sim$ 0.1 MeV. Morphological and spectral properties of the asymmetry were studied in detail. Potential observational detection of the asymmetry may allow to infer the leptonic fraction in the emission generation mechanism, thus providing valuable inferences for understanding the nature of M31 gamma-ray halo emission. Specific asymmetry predictions were made for the recently claimed DM interpretation of the outer halo emission. The paper also studied the role of secondary -- ICS and bremsstrahlung -- emissions due to DM annihilation for that interpretation. And, finally, the latter was shown to be somewhat restricted by the recently derived WIMP constraints from radio data on M31.

Annihilation of positrons from AGN jets as a possible source of cosmic gamma-ray background at energies below 511 keV

Abstract:The origin of the diffuse gamma-ray background in the range from hundreds keV to several MeV is not known conclusively. From current models and observations it is believed that, at least partially, this background is formed by blazars and remnants of supernovae (SN) of type Ia in distant galaxies. However, these contributions are not sufficient to reproduce the observed level of the signal. In this work we propose another source which could contribute to this background, namely the jets of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The composition of jets is not known, but there are observational hints that the fraction of positrons there is substantial. Positrons are partially evacuated to the intergalactic medium and partially mix with the circumgalactic medium and annihilate there comparatively quickly. Using the AGN luminosity function, we estimated the positron production rate and the contribution of the positron annihilation to the cosmic background below 511 keV. We also estimated the analogous contribution from positron annihilation within SN Ia remnants in distant galaxies. The contribution of AGNs is estimated to be a factor of 5 - 10 smaller than the observed background intensity, and the contribution from SNe is yet smaller by one order of magnitude. Nevertheless, the contribution of AGNs appeared to be larger than the contribution of blazars estimated from Swift-BAT and Fermi-LAT observations. The main uncertainty in our model is the fraction of positrons remaining in the circumgalactic medium which makes our estimation an upper limit.

Improved Constraints on Dark Matter Annihilations Around Primordial Black Holes

Abstract:Cosmology may give rise to appreciable populations of both particle dark matter and primordial black holes (PBH) with the combined mass density providing the observationally inferred value $\Omega_{\rm DM}\approx0.26$. However, previous studies have highlighted that scenarios with both particle dark matter and PBH are strongly excluded by $\gamma$-ray limits for particle dark matter with a velocity independent thermal cross section $\langle\sigma v\rangle\sim3\times10^{-26}{\rm cm}^3/{\rm s}$, as is the case for classic WIMP dark matter. Here we extend these existing studies on $s$-wave annihilating particle dark matter to ascertain the limits from diffuse $\gamma$-rays on velocity dependent annihilations which are $p$-wave with $\langle\sigma v \rangle\propto v^2$ or $d$-wave with $\langle\sigma v \rangle\propto v^4$, which we find to be considerably less constraining. Furthermore, we highlight that even if the freeze-out process is $p$-wave it is relatively common for (loop/phase-space) suppressed $s$-wave processes to actually provide the leading contributions to the experimentally constrained $\gamma$-ray flux from the PBH halo. This work also utilyses a refined treatment of the PBH dark matter density profile and outlines an improved application of extra-galactic $\gamma$-ray bounds.

Abstract:We study sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles that may annihilate or decay into SM particles producing an exotic injection component in the Milky Way that leaves an imprint in both photon and cosmic ray (CR) fluxes. Specifically, the DM particles may annihilate or decay into $e^+e^-$, $\mu^+\mu^-$ or $\pi^+\pi^-$ and may radiate photons through their $e^\pm$ products. The resulting $e^\pm$ products can be directly observed in probes such as {\sc Voyager 1}. Alternatively, the $e^\pm$ products may produce bremsstrahlung radiation and upscatter the low-energy galactic photon fields via the inverse Compton process generating a broad emission from $X$-ray to $\gamma$-ray energies observable in experiments such as {\sc Xmm-Newton}. We find that we get a significant improvement in the DM annihilation and decay constraints from {\sc Xmm-Newton} (excluding thermally averaged cross sections of $10^{-31}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1} \lesssim \langle \sigma v\rangle \lesssim10^{-26}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ and decay lifetimes of $10^{26} \textrm{s}\lesssim \tau \lesssim 10^{28} \textrm{s}$ respectively) by including best fit CR propagation and diffusion parameters. This yields the strongest astrophysical constraints for this mass range of DM of 1 MeV to a few GeV and even surpasses cosmological bounds across a wide range of masses as well.
