Abstract:XMM-Newton observations of 29 high redshift (z>2) quasars, including seven radio-quiet, 16 radio-loud and six Broad Absorption Line (BAL) objects, are presented; due to the high redshifts, the rest-frame energy bands extend up to \~30-70 keV. Over 2-10 keV, the quasars can be well fitted in each case by a simple power-law, with no strong evidence for iron emission lines. The lack of iron lines is in agreement both with dilution by the radio jet emission (for the radio-loud quasars) and the X-ray Baldwin effect. No Compton reflection humps at higher energies (i.e., above 10 keV in the rest frame) are detected either. Over the broad-band (0.3-10 keV), approximately half (nine out of 16) of the radio-loud quasars are intrinsically absorbed, with the values of N_H generally being 1-2 x 10^22 cm^-2 in the rest frames of the objects. None of the seven radio-quiet objects shows excess absorption, while four of the six BAL quasars are absorbed. The radio-loud quasars have flatter continuum slopes than their radio-quiet counterparts (Gamma_RL ~ 1.55; Gamma_RQ ~ 1.98 over 2-10 keV), while, after modelling the absorption, the underlying photon index for the six BAL quasars is formally consistent with the non-BAL radio-quiet objects.

Abstract:We analyse W boson production at hadron colliders in association with one or two jets, both with the exact kinematics and in the high-energy limit. We argue that the configurations that are kinematically favoured tend to have the W boson forward in rapidity. Thus W boson production in association with jets lends itself naturally to extensions to the high-energy limit, which we examine both at leading order and by resumming higher-order corrections through the BFKL theory.

Keck High Resolution Spectroscopy of PKS 0123+257: Intrinsic Absorption in a Radio Loud Quasar

Abstract:We present results from Keck I high resolution spectroscopy of the radio loud quasar PKS 0123+257 ($z_e$=2.364, V=17.5). In this object we detect Ly$\alpha$, N V 1238,1242, Si IV 1393,1402, and C IV 1548,1550 in an absorption system at a redshift of 2.369. The Ly$\alpha$ line has a square- bottomed profile suggesting a high column density of gas, yet the line does not reach zero intensity. The resolved C IV doublet ratio also clearly demonstrates that the absorbing clouds at this redshift do not fully occult the background light source along our line-of-sight. The absorption lines are positioned near the centers of the broad emission- lines and the coverage fraction of the strongest absorption lines varies inversely proportionally with the strength of the corresponding emission lines. This implies that although the absorption-line region may obscure the continuum source, it does not completely occult the broad emission-line region. This effect suggests that the lines are formed close to the QSO central region. A model is proposed in which the apparent coverage fraction derived for the weaker absorption lines may vary with the column density of the lines. Broad absorption-lines (which are known to be intrinsic) are found nearly exclusively in radio-quiet objects. Intrinsic narrow absorption lines have previously been found in radio quiet QSOs; it is therefore significant that an intrinsic absorption system has been verified in a radio loud quasar.

Abstract:Most X-ray studies of BALQSOs found significant (N_H~10^{22-24} cm^{-2}) intrinsic column densities of gas absorbing an underlying typical power-law continuum emission, in agreement with expectations from radiatively driven accretion disk wind models. However, direct spectral analysis was performed only on a limited number of bright sources. We investigate the X-ray emission of a large BALQSO sample at medium to high redshift (0.8<z<3.7), drawn from the cross-correlation of SDSS DR5 and 2XMM catalogs. We perform on it moderate-quality X-ray spectral and hardness ratio analysis, and X-ray/optical photometry. No or little intrinsic X-ray neutral absorption is found for one third of the spectroscopically analyzed BALQSO sample (N_H < 4 x 10^{21} cm^{-2} at 90% confidence level), and lower than typical X-ray absorption is found in the remaining sources (<N_H> ~ 5 x 10^{22} cm^{-2}) even including the faintest sources analyzed through hardness ratio analysis. The mean photon index is Gamma~1.9, with no significant evolution with redshift. The alpha_ox are typical of radio-quiet broad line AGN, in contrast with the known (from previous X-ray studies) ``soft X-ray weakness'' of BALQSOs and in agreement with the lack of X-ray absorption. We found the low-Absorption Index (AI) subsample to host the lowest X-ray absorbing column densities of the entire sample. X-ray selected BALQSOs show lower X-ray absorption than purely optically selected ones, and soft X-ray weakness does not hold for any of them. Their outflows may be launched by different mechanisms than classical soft X-ray weak BALQSOs or they may be the tail of the already known population seen along a different line of sight, in both cases expanding the observational parameter space for their search and investigation.

Abstract:Objective: To analyse the bone-ligament integration ''ligamentisation'' of the tendon graft in the reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) performing tunnels of different diameter. Material and methods: We performed the same reconstruction procedure using an autologous tendon graft taken from the superficial tendon of the hoof in 41 adult sheep. In Group A the tibial and femoral tunnels were 5 mm in diameter and in Group B they were 7 mm in diameter. The sheep were sacrificed at 3, 6 and 12 months after the surgery. Histological studies were performed on the graft and the tunnels, as well as a biomechanical analysis of the tibial-femoral complex. Results: In Group A we did not observe direct integration of the bone and the tendon graft or any fibres joining both structures, although there was vascularised fibrous tissue. In Group B we did not observe any direct binding of the bone and the tendon graft either, although there was abundant fibrous tissue. The tendon graft showed a fascicular structure that increased over time in order to create septa for vascular penetration. Macroscopically the ACL graft had a dense appearance, which was very similar to the original tendon graft. The tendon grafts from group B and with a longer follow up period required a higher strength to produce maximum breakage than the tendon grafts from group A. Conclusion: After one year follow up, the histological study shows that the tendon graft is not transformed into a ligament, and there is no integration of the tendon graft in tunnels regardless of their diameter. Abstract:Broad absorption lines (BALs), seen in a small fraction of both the radio-quiet and radio-loud quasar populations, are probably caused by the outflow of gas with high velocities and are part of the accretion process. The presence of BALs is the geometrical effect and/or it is connected with the quasar evolution. Using the final release of FIRST survey combined with a A Catalog of BAL QSOs (SDSS/DR3), we have constructed a new sample of compact radio-loud BAL QSOs, which makes the majority of radio-loud BAL QSOs. The main goal of this project is to study the origin of BALs by analysis the BAL QSOs radio morphology, their orientation and jets evolution, using EVN at 1.6 GHz and VLBA at 5 and 8.4 GHz. We will discuss also the first multi-frequency radio observations of very compact BAL quasar 1045+352 made using the VLBA, EVN, MERLIN and CHANDRA. We speculate that the most probable interpretation of the observed radio structure of 1045+352 is the ongoing process of the jet precession due to internal instabilities within the flow.
XMM-Newton Spectroscopy of the Highly Polarized and Luminous Broad Absorption Line Quasar CSO 755

Abstract:We present the results from XMM-Newton observations of the highly optically polarized broad absorption line quasar (BALQSO) CSO 755. By analyzing its X-ray spectrum with a total of ~3000 photons we find that this source has an X-ray continuum of `typical' radio-quiet quasars, with a photon index of Gamma=1.83^{+0.07}_{-0.06}, and a rather flat (X-ray bright) intrinsic optical-to-X-ray spectral slope of alpha_ox=-1.51. The source shows evidence for intrinsic absorption, and fitting the spectrum with a neutral-absorption model gives a column density of N_H~1.2x10^{22} cm^{-2}; this is among the lowest X-ray columns measured for BALQSOs. We do not detect, with high significance, any other absorption features in the X-ray spectrum. Upper limits we place on the rest-frame equivalent width of a neutral (ionized) Fe Ka line, <=180 eV (<=120 eV), and on the Compton-reflection component parameter, R<=0.2, suggest that most of the X-rays from the source are directly observed rather than being scattered or reflected; this is also supported by the relatively flat intrinsic alpha_ox we measure. The possibility that most of the X-ray flux is scattered due to the high level of UV-optical polarization is ruled out. Considering data for 46 BALQSOs from the literature, including CSO 755, we have found that the UV-optical continuum polarization level of BALQSOs is not correlated with any of their X-ray properties. A lack of significant short- and long-term X-ray flux variations in the source may be attributed to a large black-hole mass in CSO 755. We note that another luminous BALQSO, PG 2112+059, has both similar shallow C IV BALs and moderate X-ray absorption.

Abstract:We present a deep ($\sim$85 ksec) ASCA observation of the prototype Broad Absorption Line Quasar (BALQSO) PHL 5200. This is the best X-ray spectrum of a BALQSO yet. We find that (1) the source is not intrinsically X-ray weak, (2) the line of sight absorption is very strong with N_H=5 x 10^{23} cm^{-2}, (3) the absorber does not cover the source completely; the covering fraction is about 90%. This is consistent with the large optical polarization observed in this source, implying multiple lines of sight. The most surprising result of this observation is that (4) the spectrum of this BALQSO is not exactly similar to other radio-quiet quasars. The hard X-ray spectrum of PHL 5200 is steep with the power-law spectral index alpha ~1.5. This is similar to the steepest hard X-ray slopes observed so far. At low redshifts, such steep slopes are observed in narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies, believed to be accreting at a high Eddington rate. This observation strengthens the analogy between BALQSOs and NLS1 galaxies and supports the hypothesis that BALQSOs represent an early evolutionary state of quasars (Mathur 2000). It is well accepted that the orientation to the line of sight determines the appearance of a quasar; age seems to play a significant role as well.

Abstract:We present the discovery of Balmer line absorption from H$\alpha$ to H$\gamma$ in an iron low-ionization broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) quasar SDSS J152350.42+391405.2 (hereafter J1523), by the quasi-simultaneous optical and near-infrared spectroscopy. The Balmer line absorption is at $z_{absor}$ = 0.6039 +/-0.0021 and blueshifted by v=10,353 km/s with respect to the Balmer emission lines. All Balmer BALs have uniform absorption profile with the widths of $\Delta$ v ~12,000 km/s. We also found the absorption trough in He 1* $\lambda$10830 with the same velocity and width in the H-band TripleSpec spectrum of J1523. This object is only the tenth active galactic nucleus known to exhibit non-stellar Balmer absorption, and also the case with the highest velocity and broadest Balmer absorption lines which have ever been found. A CLOUDY analysis shows that the absorbers require an gas density of $log_{10} n_ e (cm^{-3})=9$ and an ionization parameter of $log_{10} U=-1.0$. They locate at a distance of ~0.2 pc from the central ionizing source which is slightly farther than that of BELRs. Furthermore, J1523 is one of the brightest Balmer-BAL quasar ever reported, with unique iron absorption variations, making it as the most promising candidate for follow up high-resolution spectroscopy, multi-band observations, and long-term monitoring.

Abstract:Context: PKS 0903-57 is a little-studied gamma-ray blazar which has recently attracted considerable interest due to the strong flaring episodes observed since 2020 in HE (100 MeV < E < 100 GeV) and VHE (100 GeV < E < 10 TeV) gamma-rays. Its nature and properties are still not well determined. In particular, it is unclear whether PKS 0903-57 is a BL Lac or a Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ), while its redshift estimation relies on a possibly misassociated low signal-to-noise spectrum. Aim: We aim to reliably measure the redshift of the blazar and to determine its spectral type and luminosity in the optical range. Methods: We performed spectroscopy of the optical counterpart of the blazar using the South African Large Telescope (SALT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and monitored it photometrically with the Rapid Eye Mount (REM) telescope. Results: We firmly measured the redshift of the blazar as z= 0.2621 +/- 0.0006 thanks to the detection of five narrow optical lines. The detection of a symmetric broad Halpha line with Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of 4020 +/- 30 km/s together with a jet-dominated continuum leads us to classify it as a FSRQ. Finally, we detected with high significance a redshift offset (about 1500 km/s) between the broad line and the host. This is the first time that such an offset is unequivocally detected in a VHE blazar, possibly pointing to a very peculiar accretion configuration, a merging system, or a recoiling Black Hole.

The Discovery of Soft X-ray Loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars

Abstract:It is been known for more than a decade that BALQSOs (broad absorption line quasars) are highly attenuated in the X-ray regime compared to other quasars, especially in the soft band ($< $ 1 keV). Using X-ray selection techniques we have found "soft X-ray loud" BALQSOs that, by definition, have soft X-ray (0.3 keV) to UV ($3000 Å$) flux density ratios that are higher than typical nonBAL radio quiet quasars. Our sample of 3 sources includes one LoBALQSO (low ionization BALQSO) which are generally considered to be the most highly attenuated in the X-rays. The three QSOs are the only known BALQSOs that have X-ray observations that are consistent with no intrinsic soft X-ray absorption. The existence of a large X-ray luminosity and the hard ionizing continuum that it presents to potential UV absorption gas is in conflict with the ionization states that are conducive to line driving forces within BAL winds (especially for the LoBALs).

The Physical Properties of Low Redshift FeLoBAL Quasars. I. Spectral Synthesis Analysis of the BAL Outflows using $SimBAL$

Abstract:We present the first systematic study of 50 low redshift ($0.66 < z < 1.63$) iron low-ionization broad absorption-line quasars (FeLoBALQs) using $SimBAL$ which represents a more than five-fold increase in the number of FeLoBALQs with detailed absorption line spectral analyses. We found the outflows have a wide range of ionization parameters, $-4\lesssim\log U\lesssim 1.2$ and densities, $2.8\lesssim\log n\lesssim8\ \rm[cm^{-3}]$. The objects in our sample showed FeLoBAL gas located at a wide range of distances $0\lesssim\log R\lesssim 4.4$ [pc], although we do not find any evidence for disk winds (with $R\ll0.01$ pc) in our sample. The outflow strength primarily depends on the outflow velocity with faster outflows found in quasars that are luminous or that have flat or redder spectral energy distributions. We found that $\sim18\%$ of the FeLoBALQs in the sample have the significantly powerful outflows needed for quasar feedback. Eight objects showed "overlapping troughs" in the spectra and we identified eleven "loitering outflow" objects, a new class of FeLoBALQs that are characterized by low outflow velocities and high column density winds located $\log R\lesssim1$ [pc] from the central engine. The FeLoBALs in loitering outflows objects do not show properties expected for radiatively driven winds and these objects may represent a distinct population among FeLoBALQs. We discuss how the potential acceleration mechanisms and the origins of the FeLoBAL winds may differ for outflows at different locations in quasars.

Abstract:We present 8.4 GHz VLA A-array and 1.4 GHz VLBA results on the radio continuum emission from the highest redshift radio-loud quasar known to date, the $z=6.12$ QSO J1427+3312. The VLA observations show an unresolved steep spectrum source with a flux density of $250 \pm 20$ uJy at 8.4GHz and a spectral index value of $\alpha^{8.4}_{1.4}=-1.1$. The 1.4 GHz VLBA images reveal several continuum components with a total flux density of $1.778 \pm 0.109$ mJy, which is consistent with the flux density measured with the VLA at 1.4 GHz. Each of these components is resolved with sizes of a few milliarcseconds, and intrinsic brightness temperatures on the order of $10^7$ to $10^8$ K. The physical characteristics as revealed in these observations suggest that this QSO may be a Compact Symmetric Object, with the two dominant components seen with the VLBA, which are separated by 31 mas (174 pc) and have intrinsic sizes of ~22-34 pc, being the two radio lobes that are confined by the dense ISM. If indeed a CSO, then the estimated kinematic age of this radio AGN is only $10^3$ yr.
PG 1254+047: An Intrinsically X-ray Weak, Heavily Absorbed BALQSO?

Abstract:We present \textit{Chandra} observations of the radio-quiet Broad Absorption Line (BAL) QSO PG 1254+047. We find that it is a weak X-ray source, with a total of $44\pm 7$ photons measured in 36 ksec across the observed energy range $0.7 - 6.0$ keV. Its X-ray weakness is consistent with the known correlation between $\alpha_{ox}$ and the strength of the UV absorption lines. The spectral energy distribution suggests that PG 1254+047 is intrinsically X-ray weak, in addition to being heavily X-ray absorbed. The X-ray absorption column density is $N_{H} > 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ for neutral gas, while the intrinsic (unabsorbed) emission spectrum has $\alpha_{ox} > 2$. The data are fit best by including an ionized (rather than neutral) absorber, with column density $N_{H} \gtrsim 2\times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. The degree of ionization is consistent with the UV BALs, as is the total column density if the strongest UV lines are saturated. If the X-ray absorber forms in a wind that is radiatively accelerated to the BAL velocities, then the wind must be launched from a radius of about $10^{16}$ cm with a mass loss rate of $\sim 1$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$.

Spectroscopy of Broad Absorption Line Quasars at $3\lesssim Z \lesssim5$: Sample, Observations, and Results

Abstract:Our knowledge of high redshift, broad absorption line (BAL) quasars (QSOs) remains limited due to their apparent deficiency in the QSO population. We present an observational study of 22 BAL QSOs at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, which delivers the largest such sample ever studied in the redshift range. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the H$\beta$ and/or Mg II broad emission lines for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs, we see the prevalence of weak [O III] emission and large C IV broad emission-line (BEL) blueshift ($\sim$3200 km s$^{-1}$). In another subset consisting of thirteen BAL QSOs having simultaneous observations in Mg II and H$\beta$, we found a strong correlation between 3000~\AA\ and 5000~\AA\ continuum luminosity, consistent with previous non-BAL QSO studies; however, there is no correlation between the FWHM of Mg II and H$\beta$, possibly due to the effects of strong nuclear outflows traced by BALs and/or C IV-BEL blueshifts. In combination with additional two low-ionization BAL (LoBAL) samples at $1<z<2.5$ and $0.5<z<1$, respectively, we investigate the cosmological evolution of the LoBAL population at $0.5\lesssim z\lesssim 5$. There is an increasing trend in Eddington ratio with increasing redshift, while the BH mass distribution appears to peak at $3<z<4$ in the augmented LoBAL sample, indicative of a "special" evolution phase, in which nuclear outflows may play an important role in shaping their broad/narrow emission-line regions as well as regulating the growth of their central BHs.

Abstract:Very few low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) QSOs have been found at high redshifts, to date. One high-redshift LoBAL QSO, J0122+1216, was recently discovered by the Lijiang 2.4 m Telescope, with an initial redshift determination of 4.76. Aiming to investigate its physical properties, we carried out follow-up observations in the optical and near-IR spectroscopy. Near-IR spectra from UKIRT and P200 confirm that it is a LoBAL, with a new redshift determination of 4.82 ± 0.01 based on the Mg ii emission-line. The new Mg ii redshift determination reveals strong blueshifts and asymmetry of the high-ionization emission lines. We estimate a black hole mass of ∼2.3 × 109 M⊙ and Eddington ratio of ∼1.0 according to the empirical Mg ii-based single-epoch relation and bolometric correction factor. It is possible that strong outflows are the result of an extreme quasar environment driven by the high Eddington ratio. A lower limit on the outflowing kinetic power (>0.9% LEdd) is derived from both emission and absorption lines, indicating that these outflows play a significant role in the feedback process that regulates the growth of its black hole, as well as host galaxy evolution.
Dependence of the Broad Absorption Line Quasar Fraction on Radio Luminosity

Abstract:We find that the fraction of classical broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs) among the FIRST radio sources in the Sloan Data Release 3, is 20:5(-5.9%)(+7.3%) at the faintest radio powers detected (L-1.4 (GHz) similar to 10(32) erg s(-1)), and rapidly drops to less than or similar to 8% at (L-1.4 (GHz) similar to 3 x 10(33) erg s(-1)). Similarly, adopting the broader absorption index (AI) definition of Trump et al., we find the fraction of radio BALQSOs to be 44-(+8.1%)(7.8) reducing to 23.1(-6.3)(+7.3%) at high luminosities. While the high fraction at low radio power is consistent with the recent near-IR estimates by Dai et al., the lower fraction at high radio powers is intriguing and confirms previous claims based on smaller samples. The trend is independent of the redshift range, the optical and radio flux selection limits, or the exact definition of a radio match. We also find that at fixed optical magnitude, the highest bins of radio luminosity are preferentially populated by non-BALQSOs, consistent with the overall trend. We do find, however, that those quasars identified as AI-BALQSOs but not under the classical definition do not show a significant drop in their fraction as a function of radio power, further supporting independent claims that these sources, characterized by lower equivalent width, may represent an independent class from the classical BALQSOs. We find the balnicity index, a measure of the absorption trough in BALQSOs, and the mean maximum wind velocity to be roughly constant at all radio powers. We discuss several plausible physical models which may explain the observed fast drop in the fraction of the classical BALQSOs with increasing radio power, although none is entirely satisfactory. A strictly evolutionary model for the BALQSO and radio emission phases requires a strong fine-tuning to work, while a simple geometric model, although still not capable of explaining polar BALQSOs and the paucity of FRII BALQSOs, is statistically successful in matching the data if part of the apparent radio luminosity function is due to beamed, non-BALQSOs.
On the Origin of Intrinsic Narrow Absorption Lines in z<1 QSOs

Abstract:We present a statistical analysis of the associated, high ionization narrow absorption line (NAL) systems in a sample of 59 QSOs defined from the HST QSO Absorption Line Key Project. We have compiled the QSO luminosities at 2500 A, 5 GHz, and 2 keV, spectral indices at 2500 A and 5 GHz, the H-beta emission line FWHM, the CIV emission line FWHM, and the radio core fraction. We find 17 associated NALs toward 15 QSOs, of which ~10 are statistically expected to be intrinsic. From a multivariate clustering analysis, the QSOs seem to group together based primarily on radio luminosity, followed by radio spectral index, CIV emission line FWHM, and soft X-ray luminosity. Radio-loud QSOs which have compact radio morphologies, flat radio spectra, and mediocre CIV FWHM (<6000 km/s) do not have detectable associated NALs, down to REW(CIV)=0.35 A. We find that BALQSOs have an enhanced probability of hosting detectable NAL gas and that the velocities of associated NALs are peaked around the emission redshifts, rather than the systemic redshifts of the QSOs. There is only one strong NAL [REW(CIV)>1.5 A] in our low redshift sample which implies evolution in the number of strong NALs with redshift. We interpret these results in the context of an accretion-disk model. In this framework, we suggest that the observational clues result from differences in orientation and wind properties, the latter presumably associated with the QSO radio properties. (abridged)
