Abstract:It has recently been shown that a significant fraction of late-type members of nearby, very young associations (age <10 Myr) display excess emission at mid-IR wavelengths indicative of dusty circumstellar disks. We demonstrate that the detection of mid-IR excess emission can be utilized to identify new nearby, young, late-type stars including two definite new members ("TWA 33" and "TWA 34") of the TW Hydrae Association. Both new TWA members display mid-IR excess emission in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) catalog and they show proper motion and youthful spectroscopic characteristics -- namely H\alpha emission, strong lithium absorption, and low surface gravity features consistent with known TWA members. We also detect mid-IR excess -- the first unambiguous evidence of a dusty circumstellar disk -- around a previously identified UV-bright, young, accreting star (2M1337) that is a likely member of the Lower-Centaurus Crux region of the Scorpius Centaurus Complex.

Abstract:Planet formation has been known for many years to be tied to the spatial distribution of gas and dust in disks around young stars. To constrain planet formation models, imaging observations of protoplanetary disks are required. In this framework, we have undertaken a mid-infrared imaging survey of Herbig Ae stars, which are pre-main sequence stars of intermediate mass still surrounded by a large amount of circumstellar material. The observations were made at a wavelength of 20.5 $\mu$m with the CAMIRAS camera mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. We report the observations of three stars, HD135344, CQTau and HD163296. The circumstellar material around the three objects is spatially resolved. The extensions feature a disk like shape. The images provide direct information on two key parameters of the disk : its inclination and its outer radius. The outer radius is found to be quite different from the one deduced from disk models only constrained by fitting the Spectral Energy Distribution of the object. Other parameters of the disk, such as flaring, dust mass have been deduced from fitting both the observed extension and the spectral energy distribution with sophisticated disk models. Our results show how important imaging data are to tighten constraints on the disk model parameters.
A Search for Warm Circumstellar Disks in the TW Hydrae Association

Abstract:A search for previously undetected optically thin disks around stars in the nearby, young, TW Hydrae Association (TWA) was conducted around 16 stars with sensitive 12 and 18 μm photometry. The survey could detect zodiacal-like dust, with temperature 200–300 K, at levels of LIR/L* = 7 × 10-3. Possible mid-infrared excess emission from TWA 17 was detected at the 2 σ level, but none of the other stars showed evidence for circumstellar dust. The rapid disappearance of large amounts of dust around the K- and M-type stars in this sample may mean that any planet formation in the terrestrial planet region was completed very quickly. There appears to be a bimodal distribution of dust disks in TWA, with stars having either copious or negligible warm dust.

Abstract:Context. Mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging traces the sub-micron and micron-sized dust grains in protoplanetary disks and it offers constraints on the geometrical properties of the disks and potential companions, particularly if those companions have circumplanetary disks. Aims. We use the VISIR instrument and its upgrade NEAR on the VLT to take new mid-IR images of five (pre-)transition disks and one circumstellar disk with proposed planets and obtain the deepest resolved mid-IR observations to date in order to put new constraints on the sizes of the emitting regions of the disks and the presence of possible companions. Methods. We derotated and stacked the data to find the disk properties. Where available, we compare the data to PRODIMO (Protoplanetary Disk Model) radiation thermo-chemical models to achieve a deeper understanding of the underlying physical processes within the disks. We applied the circularised point spread function subtraction method to find upper limits on the fluxes of possible companions and model companions with circumplanetary disks. Results. We resolved three of the six disks and calculated position angles, inclinations, and (upper limits to) sizes of emission regions in the disks, improving upper limits on two of the unresolved disks. In all cases the majority of the mid-IR emission comes from small inner disks or the hot inner rims of outer disks. We refined the existing PRODIMO HD 100546 model spectral energy distribution (SED) fit in the mid-IR by increasing the PAH abundance relative to the ISM, adopting coronene as the representative PAH, and increasing the outer cavity radius to 22.3 AU. We produced flux estimates for putative planetary-mass companions and circumplanetary disks, ruling out the presence of planetary-mass companions with L > 0.0028 L ⊙ for a > 180 AU in the HD 100546 system. Upper limits of 0.5–30 mJy are obtained at 8–12 μm for potential companions in the different disks. We rule out companions with L > 10 −2 L ⊙ for a > 60 AU in TW Hydra, a > 110 AU in HD 169142, a > 150 AU in HD 163296, and a > 160 AU in HD 36112. Conclusions. The mid-IR emission comes from the central regions and traces the inner areas of the disks, including inner disks and inner rims of outer disks. Planets with mid-IR luminosities corresponding to a runaway accretion phase can be excluded from the HD 100546, HD 169142, TW Hydra, and HD 36112 systems at separations >1′′. We calculated an upper limit to the occurrence rate of wide-orbit massive planets with circumplanetary disks of 6.2% (68% confidence). Future observations with METIS on the ELT will be able to achieve a factor of 10 better sensitivity with a factor of five better spatial resolution. MIRI on JWST will be able to achieve 250 times better sensitivity. Both will possibly detect the known companions to all six targets.

Abstract:The environment of the nearest Herbig Ae star has been investigated through a program of multi-wavelength, high contrast and high spatial resolution imagery, FUV through optical integrated light spectroscopy, and FUV spatially resolved spectroscopy. HD 104237 is the primary of a 5 Myr old aggregate of at least 4 PMS stars, 2 of which in addition to HD 104237 have IR excesses indicating the presence of dust disks. HD 104237 is actively accreting, and is driving a bipolar outflow (HH 669) which can be traced 2.65" from the star and which is viewed at an inclination of 18(-11)(+14)degrees. The counterjet can be traced no closer than 0.6" (79 AU) from the star, providing a firm upper limit to the size of the disk. The absence of spatially extended H-2 emission, FUV reflection nebulosity, and mid-IR PAH emission features are all consistent with dust settling and the presence of a geometrically shadowed disk. The combination of proximity, low reddening, and the high density of disks in the HD 104237 association make this group of stars an ideal laboratory for probing the comparative evolution of planetary systems.

Abstract:Hen 3-160 is reported in Belczynski et al.'s (2000) catalog as a symbiotic binary system with M7 giant donor. Using $V$- and $I$-band photometry collected over 20 years we have found that the giant is a Mira variable pulsating with 242.5-day period. The period-luminosity relation locates Hen 3-160 at the distance of about 9.4 kpc, and its Galactic coordinates ($l=267.7^{\circ}$, $b=-7.9^{\circ}$) place it $\sim$1.3 kpc above the disc. This position combined with relatively high proper motions (pm$_{\rm{RA}}=-1.5$ mas yr$^{-1}$, pm$_{\rm{DEC}}=+2.9$ mas yr$^{-1}$, Gaia DR2) indicates that Hen 3-160 has to be a Galactic extended thick-disc object. Our red optical and infrared spectra show the presence of ZrO and YO molecular bands that appear relatively strong compared to the TiO bands. Here we propose that the giant in this system is intrinsic S star, enriched in products of slow neutron capture processes occurring in its interior during an AGB phase which would make Hen 3-160 the first symbiotic system with Mira variable S star.

Abstract:Context. Circumstellar discs are the places where planets form, therefore knowledge of their evolution is crucial for our understanding of planet formation. The Herschel Space Observatory is providing valuable data for studying disc systems, thanks to its sensitivity and wavelength coverage. This paper is one of several devoted to analysing and modelling Herschel-PACS observations of various young stellar associations from the GASPS Open Time Key Programme. Aims. The aim of this paper is to elucidate the gas and dust properties of circumstellar discs in the 10 Myr TW Hya Association (TWA) using new far-infrared (IR) imaging and spectroscopy from Herschel-PACS. Methods. We obtained far-IR photometric data at 70, 100, and 160 microns of 14 TWA members; spectroscopic observations centred on the [OI] line at 63.18 microns were also obtained for 9 of the 14. The new photometry for each star was incorporated into its full spectral energy distribution (SED). Results. We detected excess IR emission that is characteristic of circumstellar discs from five TWA members, and computed upper limits for another nine. Two TWA members (TWA 01 and TWA 04B) also show [OI] emission at 63.18 microns. Discs in the TWA association display a variety of properties, with a wide range of dust masses and inner radii, based on modified blackbody modelling. Both transitional and debris discs are found in the sample. Models for sources with a detected IR excess give dust masses in the range from 0.15 Msun to 63 Msun.

Abstract:We investigate the environment of the nearest Herbig Ae star, HD 104237, with a multiwavelength combination of optical coronagraphic, near-IR, and mid-IR imaging supported by optical, UV, and far-ultraviolet spectroscopy. We confirm the presence of T Tauri stars associated with the Herbig Ae star HD 104237, noted by Feigelson et al. We find that two of the stars within 15" of HD 104237 have IR excesses, potentially indicating the presence of circumstellar disks, in addition to the Herbig Ae star itself. We derive a new spectral type of A7.5Ve-A8Ve for HD 104237 and find log (L/L-circle dot,) = 1.39. With these data, HD 104237 has an age of t approximate to 5 Myr, in agreement with the estimates for the other members of the association. HD 104237 is still actively accreting, with a conspicuous UV/far-UV excess seen down to 1040 A, and is driving a bipolar microjet termed HH 669. This makes it the second, older Herbig Ae star now known to have a microjet. The presence of the microjet enables us to constrain the circumstellar disk to r less than or equal to 0."6 (70 AU) with an inclination angle of i = 18degrees(-11)(+14) from pole-on. The absence of a spatially extended continuum and fluorescent H-2 emission near Lyalpha. is in agreement with the prediction of shadowed disk models for the IR spectral energy distribution. With the high spatial density of disks in this group of stars, proximity, and minimal reddening, HD 104237 and its companions should serve as ideal laboratories for probing the comparative evolution of planetary systems.
A massive parsec-scale dust ring nebula around the yellow hypergiant Hen3-1379

Abstract:On the basis of far-infrared images obtained by the Herschel Space Observatory, we report the discovery of a large and massive dust shell around the yellow hypergiant Hen3-1379 . The nebula appears as a detached ring of 1 pc diameter which contains 0.17 Msun of dust. We estimate the total gas mass to be 7 Msun, ejected some 16000 years ago. The ring nebula is very similar to nebulae found around luminous blue variables (LBVs) except it is not photoionized. We argued that Hen3-1379 is in a pre-LBV stage, providing direct evidence that massive LBV ring nebulae can be ejected during the red supergiant phase.

Imaging the dust sublimation front of a circumbinary disk

Abstract:We present the first near-IR milli-arcsecond-scale image of a post-AGB binary that is surrounded by hot circumbinary dust. A very rich interferometric data set in six spectral channels was acquired of IRAS08544-4431 with the new RAPID camera on the PIONIER beam combiner at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). A broadband image in the \textit{H} band was reconstructed by combining the data of all spectral channels using the SPARCO method. We spatially separate all the building blocks of the IRAS08544-4431 system in our milliarcsecond-resolution image. Our dissection reveals a dust sublimation front that is strikingly similar to that expected in early-stage protoplanetary disks, as well as an unexpected flux signal of $\sim$4\% from the secondary star. The energy output from this companion indicates the presence of a compact circum-companion accretion disk, which is likely the origin of the fast outflow detected in H$\alpha$. Our image provides the most detailed view into the heart of a dusty circumstellar disk to date. Our results demonstrate that binary evolution processes and circumstellar disk evolution can be studied in detail in space and over time.

VLT/SPHERE Multi-Wavelength High-Contrast Imaging of the HD 115600 Debris Disk: New Constraints on the Dust Geometry and the Presence of Young Giant Planets

Abstract:Young and dynamically active planetary systems can form disks of debris that are easier to image than the planets themselves. The morphology and evolution of these disks can help to infer the properties of the putative planets responsible for generating and shaping the debris structures. We present integral field spectroscopy and dual-band imaging from VLT/SPHERE ($1.0 - 1.7 \mu m$) of the debris disk around the young F2V/F3V star HD 115600. We aim to 1) characterize the geometry and composition of the debris ring, 2) search for thermal emission of young giant planets, and 3) in the absence of detected planets, to refine the inferred properties of plausible planets around HD 115600 to prepare future attempts to detect them. Using a different dust scattering model (ZODIPIC) than in the discovery paper (Henyey-Greenstein) to model the disk geometry, we find $a_0 = 46 \pm 2$ au for the disk's central radius and offsets $\Delta \alpha$, $\Delta \delta$ = $ -1.0 \pm 0.5, 0.5 \pm 0.5$ au. This offset is smaller than previously found, suggesting that unseen planets of lower masses could be sculpting the disk. Spectroscopy of the disk in Y-J bands with SPHERE shows reddish color, which becomes neutral or slightly blue in H band seen with GPI, broadly consistent with a mixed bulk disk composition of processed organics and water ice. While our observed field contains numerous background objects at wide separations, no exoplanet has been directly observed to a mass sensitivity limit of $2-3(5-7) M_{\rm J}$ between a projected separation of 40 and 200 au for hot (cold)-start models.

Protoplanetary Disk Mass Distribution in Young Binaries

Abstract:We present millimeter-wave continuum images of four wide (separations 210-800 AU) young stellar binary systems in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. For all four sources, the resolution of our observations is sufficient to determine the mm emission from each of the components. In all four systems, the primary star's disk has stronger millimeter emission than the secondary and in three of the four, the secondary is undetected; this is consistent with predictions of recent models of binary formation by fragmentation. The primaries' circumstellar disk masses inferred from these observations are comparable to those found for young single stars, confirming that the presence of a wide binary companion does not prevent the formation of a protoplanetary disk. Some of the secondaries show signatures of accretion (H-alpha emission and K - L excesses), yet their mm fluxes suggest that very little disk mass is present.

Abstract:We present the first JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) and Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) observations of the prominent debris disk around β Pictoris. Coronagraphic observations in eight filters spanning from 1.8 to 23 μm provide an unprecedentedly clear view of the disk at these wavelengths. The objectives of the observing program were to investigate the dust composition and distribution and to investigate the presence of planets in the system. In this paper, we focus on the disk components, providing surface brightness measurements for all images and a detailed investigation of the asymmetries observed. A companion paper by Kammerer et al. will focus on the planets in this system using the same data. We report for the first time the presence of an extended secondary disk in thermal emission, with a curved extension bent away from the plane of the disk. This feature, which we refer to as the "cat's tail," seems to be connected with the previously reported CO clump, mid-infrared asymmetry detected on the southwest side of the disk, and the warp observed in scattered light. We present a model of this secondary disk sporadically producing dust that broadly reproduces the morphology, flux, and color of the cat's tail, as well as other features observed in the disk, and which suggests the secondary disk is composed largely of porous, organic refractory dust grains.

Abstract:Mid-infrared imaging of exoplanets and disks is now possible with the coronographs of the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This wavelength range unveils new features of young directly imaged systems and allows us to obtain new constraints for characterizing the atmosphere of young giant exoplanets and associated disks. These observations aim to characterize the atmosphere of the planet HD\,95086\,b by adding mid-infrared information so that the various hypotheses about its atmospheric parameters values can be unraveled. Improved images of cirsumstellar disks are provided. We present the MIRI coronagraphic imaging of the system HD\,95086 obtained with the F1065C, F1140, and F2300C filters at central wavelengths of 10.575\,mu m, 11.3\,mu m, and 23\,mu m, respectively. We explored the method for subtracting the stellar diffraction pattern in the particular case when bright dust emitting at short separation is present. Furthermore, we compared different methods for extracting the photometry of the planet. Using the atmospheric models Exo-REM and ATMO we measured the atmospheric parameters of HD\,95086\,b. The planet HD\,95086\,b is detected at the two shortest MIRI wavelengths F1065C and F1140C. The contribution from the inner disk of the system is also detected. It is similar to that in the HR\,8799 system. The outer colder belt is imaged at 23 mu m. Background objects are observed in all filters. The mid-infrared photometry provides better constraints on the atmospheric parameters. We evaluate a temperature of 850 -- 1020\,K, consistent with one previous hypothesis that only used near-infrared data. The radius measurement of 1.0 -- 1.13 Jup $ is better aligned with evolutionary models, but still smaller than predicted. These observations allow us to refute the hypothesis of a warm circumplanetary disk. HD\,95086 is one of the first exoplanetary systems to be revealed at mid-infrared wavelengths. This highlights the interests and challenges of observations at these wavelengths.

Abstract:We present new long-baseline spectro-interferometric observations of the HerbigAe star HD163296 obtained in the H and K bands with the AMBER instrument at VLTI. The observations cover a range of spatial resolutions between 3 and 12 milli-arcseconds, with a spectral resolution of ~30. With a total of 1481 visibilities and 432 closure phases, they result in the best (u,v) coverage achieved on a young star so far. The circumstellar material is resolved at the sub-AU spatial scale and closure phase measurements indicate a small but significant deviation from point-symmetry. We discuss the results assuming that the near-infrared excess in HD163296 is dominated by the emission of a circumstellar disk. A successful fit to the spectral energy distribution, near-infrared visibilities and closure phases is found with a model where a dominant contribution to the H and K band emissions arises from an optically thin, smooth and point-symmetric region extending from about 0.1 to 0.45 AU. At the latter distance from the star, silicates condense, the disk becomes optically thick and develops a puffed-up rim, whose skewed emission can account for the non-zero closure phases. We discuss the nature of the inner disk emission and tentatively rule out dense molecular gas as well as optically thin atomic or ionized gas as its possible origin. We propose instead that the inner emission traces the presence of very refractory grains in a partially cleared region, extending at least to 0.5 AU. If so, we may be observing the disk of HD163296 just before it reaches the transition disk phase. However, we note that the nature of the refractory grains or even the possibility for any grain to survive at the very high temperatures we require (~2100-2300 K at 0.1 AU from the star) is unclear and should be investigated further.

Abstract:We use dynamical mean field theory to find an exact solution for inelastic light scattering in strongly correlated materials such as those near a quantum-critical metal-insulator transition. We evaluate the results for $\textbf{q}=0$ (Raman) scattering and find that resonant effects can be quite large, and yield a triple resonance, a significant enhancement of nonresonant scattering peaks, a joint resonance of both peaks when the incident photon frequency is on the order of $U$, and the appearance of an isosbestic point in all symmetry channels for an intermediate range of incident photon frequencies.

A Combined Spitzer and Herschel Infrared Study of Gas and Dust in the Circumbinary Disk Orbiting V4046 Sgr

Abstract:We present results from a spectroscopic Spitzer and Herschel mid-to-far-infrared study of the circumbinary disk orbiting the evolved (age ∼12–23 Myr) close binary T Tauri system V4046 Sgr. Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph spectra show emission lines of [Ne ii], H2 S(1), CO2, and HCN, while Herschel Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver spectra reveal emission from [O i], OH, and tentative detections of H2O and high-J transitions of CO. We measure [Ne iii]/[Ne ii] ≲ ?> 0.13, which is comparable to other X-ray/EUV luminous T Tauri stars that lack jets. We use the H2 S(1) line luminosity to estimate the gas mass in the relatively warm surface layers of the inner disk. The presence of [O i] emission suggests that CO, H2O, and/or OH is being photodissociated, and the lack of [C i] emission suggests any excess C may be locked up in HCN, CN, and other organic molecules. Modeling of silicate dust grain emission features in the mid-infrared indicates that the inner disk is composed mainly of large (r ∼ 5 μm) amorphous pyroxene and olivine grains (∼86% by mass) with a relatively large proportion of crystalline silicates. These results are consistent with other lines of evidence indicating that planet building is ongoing in regions of the disk within ∼30 AU of the central, close binary.

Abstract:We present the first images of the transition disk around the close binary system HD 34700A in polarized scattered light using the Gemini Planet Imager instrument on Gemini South. The J- and H-band images reveal multiple spiral-arm structures outside a large (R = 0.″49 = 175 au) cavity, along with a bluish spiral structure inside the cavity. The cavity wall shows a strong discontinuity, and we clearly see significant non-azimuthal polarization Uϕ, consistent with multiple scattering within a disk at an inferred inclination ∼42°. Radiative transfer modeling along with a new Gaia distance suggest HD 37400A is a young (∼5 Myr) system consisting of two intermediate-mass (∼2 M⊙) stars surrounded by a transitional disk and not a solar-mass binary with a debris disk, as previously classified. Conventional assumptions of the dust-to-gas ratio would rule out a gravitational instability origin to the spirals while hydrodynamical models using the known external companion or a hypothetical massive protoplanet in the cavity both have trouble reproducing the relatively large spiral-arm pitch angles (∼30°) without fine-tuning of gas temperature. We explore the possibility that material surrounding a massive protoplanet could explain the rim discontinuity after also considering effects of shadowing by an inner disk. Analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope data suggests the disk is rotating counterclockwise as expected from the spiral-arm structure and revealed a new low-mass companion at 6.″45 separation. We include an appendix that sets out clear definitions of Q, U, Qϕ, Uϕ, correcting some confusion and errors in the literature.

Abstract:We report an in-depth study of the F8-type star HD 166191, identified in an ongoing survey for stars exhibiting infrared emission above their expected photospheres in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer all-sky catalog. The fractional IR luminosity measured from 3.5 to 70 $\mu$m is exceptionally high (L$_{IR}$/L$_{bol}$ $\sim$10%). Near-diffraction limited imaging observations with the T-ReCS Si filter set on the Gemini South telescope and adaptive optics imaging with the NIRC2 Lp filter on the Keck II telescope confirmed that the excess emission coincides with the star. Si-band images show a strong solid-state emission feature at $\sim$10 $\mu$m. Theoretical evolutionary isochrones and optical spectroscopic observations indicate a stellar age in the range 10-100 Myr. The large dust mass seen in HD 166191's terrestrial planet zone is indicative of a recent collision between planetary embryos or massive ongoing collisional grinding associated with planet building.
