Abstract:Large scale Monte Carlo simulations are performed in order to clarify thermodynamic properties of vortex states of extremely type-II, layered superconductors. The first-order normal to superconductivity transition is observed accompanied by the melting of the flux-line lattice. If the magnetic field is applied parallel to the layer, there exists a critical field above which the melting becomes continuous. Dynamics of current-driven vortices in a random potential has also been investigated and it is found that for certain currents the moving Bragg glass melts first into moving smectic and then to liquid.
Dynamical Properties of Chiral-Glass Order in Ceramic High-Tc Superconductors

Abstract:There recently accumulated growing numerical and experimental evidence that a novel glassy zero-field phase characterized by the spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry, a chiral-glass phase, is realized in certain ceramic high-$T_c$ superconductors. Existence of frustration in zero external field, arising from the d-wave pairing symmetry of high-$T_c$ superconductors, is essential to realize this phase. In this paper, we study the dynamical critical properties of the chiral-glass transition by means of Monte Carlo simulations, based on a lattice {\it XY} model with finite screening. We perform a dynamical scaling analysis, and the results are discussed in conjunction with recent ac magnetic susceptibility and transport measurements on high-$T_c$ ceramics.

The Effect of Critical Coupling Constants on Superconductivity Enhancement

Abstract:In this study, we propose a phenomenological model to extend McMillan's results on a coupling strength equal to 2. We investigate possible strategies to enhance superconductivity by tuning the phonon frequency, carrier number, or pressure. In particular, we show that the critical coupling constants corresponding to the phonon frequency, carrier number, or pressure determine whether the variation of the critical temperature is positive or negative. These observations explain the contrasting behavior between weak and strong coupling superconductors and are consistent with experimental observations. We also demonstrate the dome observed in the carrier number effect and pressure effect. Additionally, these critical coupling constants systematically separate superconductivity into three regions: weak, intermediate, and strong coupling. We find that the enhancement strategies for weak and strong coupling regions are opposite, but both inevitably bring superconductivity into the intermediate coupling region. Finally, we propose general zigzag methods for intermediate coupling superconductors to further enhance the critical temperature.

Abstract:The pairing symmetry of superconducting electrons can be identified through various phase-sensitive experiments. However, phenomena like the Josephson effect predominantly depend on frameworks exhibiting macroscopic interference. At the microscopic level, phase interference effects within momentum space are absent due to the intrinsic challenge of extracting phase information from specific momentum points. By incorporating the hybridization effect between a primary band and its replica bands generated by density wave orders or other interactions, we introduce a superconducting phase interference effect at the intersection points on the Fermi surfaces of these two bands. This effect clarifies the extraordinary behavior observed in the single-particle spectral function in recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements in the $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212) superconductor. It also offers a new insight into the non-zero Josephson current observed in a $45^\circ$-twisted Josephson junction of cuprate superconductors.

Abstract:A ferroelectric superlattice consisting of two ferroelectric materials is investigated based on the transverse Ising model. We study the effects of long-range coupling interactions on the spontaneous polarization, the Curie temperature, and the dielectric susceptibility of the ferroelectric superlattice. We find that with the increase of the interaction range, the spontaneous polarization as well as the Curie temperature increase, and two peaks in dielectric susceptibility become only one gradually. This indicates that the ferroelectric superlattice tends to form a single artificial material.

Abstract:Using the Gorkov equations, we provide an exact solution for a one-dimensional model of superconductivity in the presence of a conical helicoidal exchange field. Due to the special type of symmetry of the system, the superconducting transition always occurs into a nonuniform superconducting phase (in contrast with the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, which appears only at low temperatures). We directly demonstrate that the uniform superconducting state in our model carries a current and thus does not correspond to the ground state. We study in the framework of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach the properties of the Josephson junction with a conical ferromagnet as a weak link. In our numerical calculations, we do not use any approximations (such as, e.g., a quasiclassical approach), and we show a realization of an anomalous $\phi_{0}$ junction (with a spontaneous phase difference $\phi_{0}$ in the ground state). The spontaneous phase difference $\phi_{0}$ strongly increases at high values of the exchange field near the borderline with a half-metal, and it exists also in the half-metal regime.
Anomalous Josephson Coupling and High-Harmonics in Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductors with $S$-wave Spin-Triplet Pairing

Abstract:We study the Josephson effects arising in junctions made of non-centrosymmetric superconductors with spin-triplet pairing having $s$-wave orbital-singlet symmetry. We demonstrate that the orbital dependent character of the spin-triplet order parameter determines its non-trivial texture in the momentum space due to the inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit interactions. The emergence of this pattern is responsible for the occurrence of an anomalous Josephson coupling and a dominance of high-harmonics in the current phase relation. Remarkably, due to the spin-orbital couplings, variations in the electronic structure across the heterostructure can generally turn the ground state of the junction from 0- to a generic value of the Josephson phase, thus realizing the so-called $\varphi$-junction. Hallmarks of the resulting Josephson behavior, apart from non-standard current-phase relation, are provided by an unconventional temperature and magnetic field dependence of the critical current. These findings indicate the path for the design of superconducting orbitronics devices and account for several observed anomalies of the supercurrent in oxide interface superconductors.

Abstract:The interplay among frustrated lattice geometry, nontrivial band topology and correlation yields rich quantum states of matter in Kagome systems. A series of recent members in this family, AV3Sb5 (A= K, Rb, Cs), exhibit a cascade of symmetry-breaking transitions, involving the 3Q chiral charge ordering, electronic nematicity, roton pair-density-wave and superconductivity. The nature of the superconducting order is yet to be resolved. Here, we report an indication of chiral superconducting domains with boundary supercurrents in intrinsic CsV3Sb5 flakes. Magnetic field-free superconducting diode effect is observed with polarity modulated by thermal histories, suggesting dynamical superconducting order domains in a spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking background. Strikingly, the critical current exhibits the double-slit superconducting interference patterns when subjected to an external magnetic field. Characteristics of the patterns are modulated by thermal cycling. These phenomena are proposed as a consequence of periodically modulated supercurrents flowing along certain domain boundaries constrained by fluxoid quantization. Our results imply a chiral superconducting order, opening a potential for exploring exotic physics, e.g. Majorana zero modes, in this intriguing topological Kagome system.

Anomalous Josephson diode effect in superconducting multilayers

Abstract:In this study, we explore the Josephson current-phase relation within a planar diffuse tunneling superconducting multilayer junction subjected to a parallel magnetic field. Our investigation involves computing the supercurrent associated with a fixed jump in the phase of the order parameter at each of the two insulating interfaces, allowing us to derive the current-phase relation for the junction. Employing perturbation theory in junction conductance, we determine both the first and second harmonics of the current-phase relation under specific magnetic field conditions. Notably, the presence of a strong spin-orbit interaction in the middle region of the junction introduces an anomalous Josephson effect. The interplay between spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions results in the emergence of an effective vector potential. This specific characteristic induces a phase shift in each harmonic of the current-phase relation without altering the overall shape of the relation. The mechanism for the Josephson diode effect is discussed for disordered junctions of multiband superconductors.

Abstract:Charge formations on superconducting layers and creation of the longitudinal plasma wave in the stack of intrinsic Josephson junctions change crucially the superconducting current through the stack. Investigation of the correlations of superconducting currents in neighboring Josephson junctions and the charge correlations in neighboring superconducting layers allows us to predict the additional features in the current--voltage characteristics. The charge autocorrelation functions clearly demonstrate the difference between harmonic and chaotic behavior in the breakpoint region. Use of the correlation functions gives us a powerful method for the analysis of the current--voltage characteristics of coupled Josephson junctions.
Simulation of Stress-Induced Enhanced Dielectric Permittivity in Ferroelectric Superlattice

Abstract:A ferroelectric superlattice is composed of alternative stacks of two different ferroelectric materials. It has been demonstrated that enhanced dielectric permittivity occurs when the stacking periodicity is reduced down to a few monolayers. In this paper, this enhancement is numerically simulated by Landau-Khatalnikov theory. In-plane interfacial strain exists between adjacent stacks due to lattice mismatch, where the signs of the strain are different on the different sides of the interface. The dielectric enhancement for small periodicity, as observed from experiments, can be reproduced. Moreover, it is found that this enhancement increases with the number of periods. Both of these results reflect the relatively important influence of the in-plane interfacial strain. This is the first theoretical work to simulate the enhanced dielectric permittivity of ferroelectric superlattice.

Abstract:In superconductors that lack inversion symmetry, a supercurrent flow can lead to nondissipative magnetoelectric effects. We offer a straightforward formalism to obtain a supercurrent-induced magnetization in superconductors with broken inversion symmetry, which may have orbital, layer, sublattice, or valley degrees of freedom, multiband noncentrosymmetric superconductors. The nondissipative magnetoelectric effect may find applications in fabricating quantum computation platforms or efficient superconducting spintronic devices. We explore how the current-induced magnetization can be employed to create and manipulate Majorana zero modes in a simple hybrid structure.

Abstract:Based on a microscopic model, we study the interplay betweensuperconductivity and antiferromagnetism in a multi-layered system, where twosuperconductors are separated by an antiferromagnetic region. Within aself-consistent mean-field theory, this system is solved numerically. We findthat the antiferromagnetism in the middle layers profoundly affects thesupercurrent flowing across the junction, while the phase difference across thejunction influences the development of antiferromagnetism in the middle layers.This study may not only shed new light on the mechanism for high-T_csuperconductors, but also bring important insights to buildingJosephson-junction-based quantum devices, such as SQUID and superconductingqubit.
Enhanced Superconducting Diode Effect due to coexisting Phases

Abstract:The superconducting diode effect refers to an asymmetry in the critical supercurrent $J_c(\hat{n})$ along opposite directions, $J_c(\hat{n})\neq J_c(-\hat{n})$. While the basic symmetry requirements for this effect are known, it is, for junction-free systems, difficult to capture within current theoretical models the large current asymmetries $J_c(\hat{n})/J_c(-\hat{n})$ recently observed in experiment. We here propose and develop a theory for an enhancement mechanism of the diode effect arising from spontaneous symmetry breaking. We show - both within a phenomenological and a microscopic theory - that there is a coupling of the supercurrent and the underlying symmetry-breaking order parameter. This coupling can enhance the current asymmetry significantly. Our work might not only provide a possible explanation for recent experiments on trilayer graphene but also pave the way for future realizations of the superconducting diode effect with large current asymmetries.

Abstract:We investigate the current-phase relations of Al/InAs-quantum well planar Josephson junctions fabricated using nanowire shadowing technique. Based on several experiments, we conclude that the junctions exhibit an unusually large second-order Josephson harmonic, the $\sin(2\varphi)$ term. First, superconducting quantum interference devices (dc-SQUIDs) show half-periodic oscillations, tunable by gate voltages as well as magnetic flux. Second, Josephson junction devices exhibit kinks near half-flux quantum in supercurrent diffraction patterns. Third, half-integer Shapiro steps are present in the junctions. Similar phenomena are observed in Sn/InAs quantum well devices. We perform data fitting to a numerical model with a two-component current phase relation. Analysis including a loop inductance suggests that the sign of the second harmonic term is negative. The microscopic origins of the observed effect remain to be understood. We consider alternative explanations which can account for some but not all of the evidence.

Abstract:Coherent tunneling processes of multiple Cooper pairs across a Josephson junction give rise to higher harmonics in the current phase relation. In this work, we propose and study Josephson junctions based on semiconductor-superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator heterostructures to engineer nonsinusoidal current-phase relations. The gate-tunability of charge carriers density in the semiconductor, together with the adjustable magnetization of the ferromagnetic insulator, provides control over the content of the supercurrent harmonics. At finite exchange field, hybrid junctions can undergo a 0\,--\,$\pi$ phase transition, resulting in the supercurrent reversal. Close to the transition, single-pair tunneling is suppressed and the current-phase relation is dominated by the second-harmonic, indicating transport primarily by pairs of Cooper pairs. Finally, we demonstrate that non-collinear magnetization or spin-orbit coupling in the leads and the junction can lead to a gate-tunable Josephson diode effect with efficiencies of up to $\sim30\%$.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate the quantum phase transitions of a phase-glass model in a magnetic field with frustration parameter f = 1/2, describing the effects random negative Josephson-junction couplings in two-dimensional superconductors. The critical behavior is obtained by a scaling analysis of path-integral Monte Carlo simulations at zero temperature, including corrections to finite-size scaling. A single superconducting and chiral-glass to insulator transition occurs above a disorder threshold with divergent nonlinear magnetic susceptibility, unaffected by the additional magnetic-field frustration. The relevance of this transition for nanohole superconducting thin films doped with magnetic impurities is discussed.
Josephson diode effect in junctions of superconductors with band asymmetric metals

Abstract:At interfaces connecting two superconductors (SCs) separated by a metallic layer, an electric current is induced when there is a disparity in the phases of the two superconductors. We elucidate this phenomenon based on the weights of the Andreev bound states associated with the states carrying current in forward and reverse directions. Typically, current phase relation (CPR) in Josephson junctions is an odd function. When time reversal and inversion symmetries are broken at the junction, CPR ceases to be an odd function and the system may exhibit Josephson diode effect. This phenomenon has been studied in spin orbit coupled systems under an external Zeeman field wherein the magnetochiral anisotropy is responsible for the Josephson diode effect. Recently introduced the band asymmetric metal (BAM) model presents a novel avenue, featuring an asymmetric band structure. We investigate DC Josephson effect in SC-BAM-SC junctions and find that band asymmetry can lead to Josephson diode effect and anomalous Josephson effect. We explain the mechanism behind these effects based on interference of plane wave modes within the Bogoliubov de-Genne formalism. We calculate diode effect coefficient for different values of the parameters.

Abstract:We consider a planar SIS-type Josephson junction between diffusive superconductors (S) through an insulating tunnel interface (I). We construct fully self-consistent perturbation theory with respect to the interface conductance. As a result, we find correction to the first Josephson harmonic and calculate the second Josephson harmonic. At arbitrary temperatures, we correct previous results for the nonsinusoidal current-phase relation in Josephson tunnel junctions, which were obtained with the help of conjectured form of solution. Our perturbation theory also describes the difference between the phases of the order parameter and of the anomalous Green functions.

Abstract:We have measured ac magnetic susceptibility (chi=chi(')+i chi '') of the electron-doped superconducting Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4-delta with applied magnetic field (H) either parallel or perpendicular to the CuO2 plane (H parallel to ab-plane or H parallel to c-axis). For H parallel to ab-plane, a peak in the temperature dependence of the screening current is revealed as a dip in the real part of the ac susceptibility chi. The temperature at which this peak anomaly occurs decreases with increasing field and lies well below the irreversibility line in the H-T phase diagram. This peak effect may arise from the phase transition of Josephson vortices from a quasiordered vortex lattice to a disordered glass phase.
