Abstract:The standard formulation of the high-energy evolution in perturbative QCD, based on the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation, is known to suffer from severe instabilities associated with radiative corrections enhanced by double transverse logarithms, which occur in all orders starting with the next-to-leading one. Over the last years, several methods have been devised to resum such corrections by enforcing the time-ordering of the successive gluon emissions. We observe that the instability problem is not fully cured by these methods: various prescriptions for performing the resummation lead to very different physical results and thus lack of predictive power. We argue that this problem can be avoided by using the rapidity of the dense target (which corresponds to Bjorken x ) instead of that of the dilute projectile as an evolution time. This automatically ensures the proper time-ordering and also allows for a direct physical interpretation of the results. We explicitly perform this change of variables at NLO. We observe the emergence of a new class of double logarithmic corrections, potentially leading to instabilities, which are however less severe, since disfavoured by the typical BK evolution for "dilute-dense" scattering. We propose several prescriptions for resumming these new double-logarithms to all orders and find only little scheme dependence: different prescriptions lead to results which are consistent to each other to the accuracy of interest. We restore full NLO accuracy by completing one of the resummed equations (non-local in rapidity) with the remaining NLO corrections.

New exact analytical solution of the nonlinear Gribov-Levin-Ryskin-Mueller-Qiu equation

Abstract:The GLR-MQ equation is a nonlinear evolution equation that takes into account the shadowing effect, which tames the growth of the gluon at small-$x$. In this study, we analytically solve for the first time the nonlinear GLR-MQ equation using the homogeneous balance method. The definite solution of the GLR-MQ equation is obtained by fitting the MSTW2008LO gluon distribution data. We find that the geometric scaling is an intrinsic property of our analytical solution and the gluon distribution functions from our solution are able to reproduce the MSTW2008LO data. These results indicate that our analytical solution from the homogeneous balance method is valid to describe the gluon behavior at small-$x$. Moreover, the saturation scale $Q_s$ has been extracted from our analytical solution, we find that the energy-dependent saturation scale obeys the exponential law $Q_s^2\,\propto\,Q_0^2 e^{\lambda Y}$.

Solution to the Sudakov suppressed Balitsky-Kovchegov equation and its application to the HERA data

Abstract:We analytically solve the Sudakov suppressed Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution equation with the fixed and running coupling constants in the saturation region. The analytic solution of the $S$-matrix shows the $\exp(\mathcal{O}(\eta^2))$ rapidity dependence of the solution with the fixed coupling constant is replaced by $\exp(\mathcal{O}(\eta^{3/2}))$ dependence in the smallest dipole running coupling case rather than obeying the law found in our previous publication, in which all the solutions of the next-to-leading order evolution equations comply with $\exp(\mathcal{O}(\eta))$ rapidity dependence once the QCD coupling is switched from the fixed coupling to the smallest dipole running coupling prescription. This finding indicates that the corrections of the sub-leading double logarithms in the Sudakov suppressed evolution equation are significant, which compensate part of the evolution decrease of the dipole amplitude made by running coupling effect. To test the analytic findings, we calculate the numerical solutions of the Sudakov suppressed evolution equation, the numerical results confirm the analytic outcomes. Moreover, we use the numerical solutions of the evolution equation to fit the HERA data. It shows that the Sudakove suppressed evolution equation can give good quality fit to the data.

QED corrections to parton distributions and Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions in the polarized case

Abstract:We discuss the effect of QED corrections in the evolution of polarized parton distributions. We solve the corresponding evolution equations exactly to ${\cal O}(\alpha )$ and ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$ in Mellin $N$-space, extending the available techniques for pure QCD evolution. To accomplish this, we introduce, for the first time, the Altarelli-Parisi polarized kernels at LO in QED. Furthermore, we perform a phenomenological analysis of the QED effects on polarized parton distributions (pPDFs), proposing different scenarios for the polarized photon density. Finally, we quantify the impact of the corresponding QED contributions to the polarized structure function $g_1$. We show that the relative corrections to both the pPDFs and the $g_1$ structure function are approximately at the few percent level, which is the order of magnitude expected considering the value of $\alpha$.

Abstract:We show that the conventional threshold resummation calculation cannot describe well the low energy Drell-Yan (DY) data without including the non-perturbative correction terms which are deduced from analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the resummation formalism. It is demonstrated that the non-perturbative correction is generally small for the large invariant mass DY pairs produced at the Tevatron and the LHC.

Abstract:We present numerical studies of the leading nonlinear corrections to the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations of parton distribution functions (PDFs) resulting from gluon recombination. The effect of these corrections is to reduce the pace of evolution at small momentum fractions x while slightly increasing it at intermediate x . By implementing the nonlinear evolution in the xfitter framework, we have carried out fits of proton PDFs using data on lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering from HERA, BCDMS, and NMC. While we find no evidence for the presence of nonlinearities, they cannot be entirely excluded either, and we are able to set limits for their strength. In terms of the recombination scale Qr , which plays a similar role as the saturation scale in the dipole picture of the proton, we find that Qr≲2.5 GeV . We also quantify the impact of the nonlinear terms for the longitudinal structure function at the Electron-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Electron Collider and find that these measurements could provide stronger constraints on the projected effects. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.094004 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:A recent study indicates that the ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{2}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}^{2}$ order QED processes of $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}+X$ decay are compatible with those of QCD processes. However, in the endpoint region, the nonrelativistic QED calculation breaks down since the collinear degrees of freedom are missing under the framework of this effective theory. In this paper we apply the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) to study the color-singlet QED process at the kinematic limit. Within this approach we are able to sum the kinematic logarithms by running operators using the renormalization group equations of soft-collinear effective theory, which will lead to a dramatic change in the momentum distribution near the endpoint and the spectrum shape consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:We investigate the non-perturbative effects on the ratio R=σL/σT in lepton-nucleon deep inelastic scattering by taking into account the lowest dimensional condensate contributions from the QCD vacuum. By combining conventional perturbative QCD corrections and the Georgi-Politzer target-mass effects with the non-perturbative effects from the QCD vacuum, we give a good description of the Q2 and x dependences of R in comparison with the recent experimental data.

Abstract:We develop an asymptotic perturbation theory for the large logarithmic behavior of the non-linear integro-differential equation describing the soft correlations of QCD jet measurements, the Banfi-Marchesini-Smye (BMS) equation. This equation captures the late-time evolution of radiating color dipoles after a hard collision. This allows us to prove that at large values of the control variable (the non-global logarithm, a function of the infra-red energy scales associated with distinct hard jets in an event), the distribution has a gaussian tail. We compute the decay width analytically, giving a closed form expression, and find it to be jet geometry independent, up to the number of legs of the dipole in the active jet. Enabling the asymptotic expansion is the correct perturbative seed, where we perturb around an anzats encoding formally no real emissions, an intuition motivated by the buffer region found in jet dynamics. This must be supplemented with the correct application of the BFKL approximation to the BMS equation in collinear limits. Comparing to the asymptotics of the conformally related evolution equation encountered in small-x physics, the Balitisky-Kovchegov (BK) equation, we find that the asymptotic form of the non-global logarithms directly maps to the black-disc unitarity limit of the BK equation, despite the contrasting physical pictures. Indeed, we recover the equations of saturation physics in the final state dynamics of QCD.

Nonlinear terms from GLR-MQ evolution

Abstract:We show that the saturation exponent is more effective than the hard pomeron exponent in the nonlinear terms for the GLR-MQ evolution equations. For the gluon distribution the nonlinear terms are found to play an increasingly important role than the singlet distribution. The nonlinear corrections for the singlet and gluon distributions are important in a limited range of $Q^2$ and are independent of the upward and downward evolution. This allows us to single out the region where the nonlinear corrections may provide evidence for recombination. We numerically study the nonlinear terms for nuclear singlet and gluon distributions and quantify the impact of gluon recombination in a wide range of $Q^2$. This analysis indicates that the nonlinear effects are most pronounced for heavy nuclei and are sizable at $2{\lesssim}Q^2{\lesssim}20~\mathrm{GeV}^2$ for light and heavy nuclei.

Deriving the QCD evolution equations under the Abelian decomposition scheme

Abstract:The Abelian decomposition of QCD reveals two types of gluons: color-neutral ``neurons" and color-carrying ``chromons". This classification does not alter the overall properties of QCD, but the investigation of different types of gluon dynamics is necessary. By employing the Cho-Duan-Ge decomposition theorem, we have derived dynamic evolution equations for two types of gluons by using the time-ordered perturbation theory. We propose that the new equations are compatible with the DGLAP equations, requiring only the separate contributions of neurons and chromons to be summed. Surprisingly, with the evolution to high $Q^2$, the ratio of the number of chromons to neurons is approximately 3:1 in small-$x$ region regardless of the inputs at evolution starting point. The new gluon dynamic equations reevaluate the gluon distribution functions and allow for a elaborate inverstigation of the distinct contributions of gluons in high-energy collisions.

Abstract:A bstract The radiative energy loss of fast partons traveling through the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is commonly studied within perturbative QCD (pQCD). Nonperturbative (NP) effects, which are expected to become important near the critical temperature, have been much less investigated. Here, we utilize a recently developed T -matrix approach to incorporate NP effects for gluon emission off heavy quarks propagating through the QGP. We set up four cases that contain, starting from a Born diagram calculation with color- Coulomb interaction, an increasing level of NP components, by subsequently including (remnants of ) confining interactions, resummation in the heavy-light scattering amplitude, and off-shell spectral functions for both heavy and light partons. For each case we compute the power spectra of the emitted gluons, heavy-quark transport coefficients (drag and transverse-momentum broadening, $$ \hat{q} $$ q ̂ ), and the path-length dependent energy loss within a “QGP brick” at fixed temperature. Investigating the differences in these quantities between the four cases illustrates how NP mechanisms affect gluon radiation processes. While the baseline perturbative processes experience a strong suppression of soft radiation due to thermal masses of the emitted gluons, confining interactions, ladder resummations and broad spectral functions (re-)generate a large enhancement toward low momenta and low temperatures. For example, for a 10 GeV charm quark at 200 MeV temperature, they enhance the transport coefficients by up to a factor of 10, while the results smoothly converge to perturbative results at sufficiently hard scales.

Born-Oppenheimer Renormalization group for High Energy Scattering: CSS, DGLAP and all that

Abstract:In \cite{one}, we have introduced the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) renormalization group approach to high energy hadronic collisions and derived the BO approximation for the light cone wave function of a fast moving projectile hadron. In this second paper, we utilize this wave function to derive the BO evolution of partonic distributions in the hadron -- the gluon transverse momentum and integrated parton distributions (TMD and PDF respectively). The evolution equation for the TMD contains a linear and a nonlinear term. The linear term reproduces the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) equation with a physical relation between the transverse and longitudinal resolution scales. We explain how this equivalence arises, even though the BO and CSS cascades are somewhat different in structures. The nonlinear term in the evolution has a very appealing physical meaning: it is a correction due to stimulated emission, which enhances emission of gluons (bosons) into states with a nonzero occupation. For the evolution of the PDF we again find a linear and nonlinear term. At not very small Bjorken $x$, the linear term recovers the DGLAP equation in the leading logarithmic approximation. At small $x$ however there are contributions from gluon splittings which are in the BFKL kinematics leading to a modification of the DGLAP equation. The nonlinear terms have the same physical origin as in the equation for the TMD -- the stimulated emission corrections. Interestingly the nonlinear corrections are the most important for the virtual terms, so that the net correction to the DGLAP is negative and mimics shadowing, although the physical origin of the nonlinearity is very different.

Effects of threshold resummation for large-$x$ PDF in large momentum effective theory

Abstract:Parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large $x$ are challenging to extract from experimental data, yet they are essential for understanding hadron structure and searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Within the framework of the large momentum $P^z$ expansion of lattice quasi-PDFs, we investigate large $x$ PDFs, where the matching coefficient is factorized into the hard kernel, related to the active quark momentum $x P^z$, and the threshold soft function, associated with the spectator momentum $(1-x) P^z$. The renormalization group equation of the soft function enables the resummation of the threshold double logarithms $\alpha^{k} \ln^{2k-1}(1-x)$, which is crucial for a reliable and controllable calculation of large $x$ PDFs. Our analysis with pion valence PDFs indicates that perturbative matching breaks down when the spectator momentum $(1-x)P^z$ approaches $\Lambda_{\rm QCD}$, but remains valid when both $x P^z$ and $(1-x)P^z$ are much larger than $\Lambda_{\rm QCD}$. Additionally, we incorporate leading renormalon resummation within the threshold framework, demonstrating good perturbative convergence in the region where both spectator and active quark momenta are perturbative scales.

On Deep inelastic Electron-Proton Scattering, the Gluon Density and DGLAP Evolution in the low-$x$, low-$Q^2$ domain

Abstract:We examine the determination of the gluon distribution of the proton in the low-$x$, low-$Q^2$ domain of deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). Adopting two-gluon exchange as the dominant interaction in the low-$x$, low-$Q^2$ domain implying the known result of scaling of the photoabsorption cross section in terms of the scaling variable $\eta(W^2,Q^2)$, we deduce a reliable result for the gluon distribution at leading order of the perturbative QCD improved parton model that differs significantly from the widely spread results from big collaborations based on evolving from a starting scale of $Q_0^2\cong 2$ GeV$^2$. The validity of evolution upon adopting its quantitative modification at low-$Q^2$ without any modification at larger values of $Q^2$ leads to a quantitative improvement of the extraction of the gluon distribution based on evolution from a starting scale of $Q^2$ conventionally chosen as $Q^2= Q_0^2\cong 2$ GeV$^2$.

Abstract:Many present lattice QCD approaches to calculate the parton distribution functions (PDFs) rely on a factorization formula or effective theory expansion of certain Euclidean matrix elements in boosted hadron states. In the quasi- and pseudo-PDF methods, the matching coefficient in the factorization or expansion formula includes large logarithms near the threshold, which arise from the subtle interplay of collinear and soft divergences of an underlying 3D momentum distribution. We use the standard prescription to resum such logarithms in the Mellin-moment space at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, which also accounts for the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution, and we show that it can suppress the PDF at large x. Unlike the deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan cross sections, the resummation formula is away from the Landau pole. We then apply our formulation to reanalyze the recent lattice results for the pion valence PDF, and find that within the current data sensitivity, the effect of threshold resummation is marginal for the accessible moments and the PDF at large x.

Nonlinear Schwinger mechanism in QCD, and Fredholm alternatives theorem

Abstract:We present a novel implementation of the Schwinger mechanism in QCD, which fixes uniquely the scale of the effective gluon mass and streamlines considerably the procedure of multiplicative renormalization. The key advantage of this method stems from the nonlinear nature of the dynamical equation that generates massless poles in the longitudinal sector of the three-gluon vertex. An exceptional feature of this approach is an extensive cancellation involving the components of the integral expression that determines the gluon mass; it is triggered once the Schwinger-Dyson equation of the pole-free part of the three-gluon vertex has been appropriately exploited. It turns out that this cancellation is driven by the so-called Fredholm alternatives theorem, which operates among the set of integral equations describing this system. Quite remarkably, in the linearized approximation this theorem enforces the exact masslessness of the gluon. Instead, the nonlinearity induced by the full treatment of the relevant kernel evades this theorem, allowing for the emergence of a nonvanishing mass. The numerical results obtained from the resulting equations are compatible with the lattice findings, and may be further refined through the inclusion of the remaining fundamental vertices of the theory.
