Abstract:Collective excitations of long-lived atomic hyperfine states can be synthesized into a Bose-Hubbard model in momentum space, where a spatially long-range interaction is introduced by laser-dressing the hyperfine state to Rydberg states. We explore stationary and dynamical properties of the momentum-space lattice in an artificial magnetic field. The many-body ground states support both chiral and anti-chiral edge currents in momentum space. Their stability against strong interactions is verified by a dynamical mean-field simulation. We show that the interplay of the interaction and chirality leads to correlated chiral dynamics, where an interaction-induced excitation blockade in momentum space suppresses the edge currents. When incorporating an effective decay to the lattice, we find that excitation transportation, whose dynamics is governed by a dissipative Bose-Hubard model, can be prohibited by a strong local dissipation, as a result of the quantum Zeno effect. Our study paves the route to quantum simulate topological phases and exotic dynamics with collective states of interacting atoms in momentum-space lattice.
Field-induced Peierls phase in $S=1$ Heisenberg spins coupled to quantum phonons

Abstract:Spin-Peierls transition occurs in a one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model with single-ion anisotropy, coupled to finite frequency bond phonons, in a magnetic field. Our results indicate that for the pure Heisenberg model, any Peierls transition is suppressed by quantum fluctuations of the phonon field. However, a novel magnetic field-induced Spin-Peierls phase is realized in the presence of strong single-ion anisotropy. Contrary to the standard Peierls state, the periodicity of bond strength modulation in this field-induced Spin-Peierls state is variable and depends on the strength of the applied field. The nature of the ground state in this new phase and the associated field-driven transitions to and out of this phase are explored using extensive numerical simulations. In particular, we explore the spin and bond correlations and the evolution of bond order modulation with varying magnetic field.

Abstract:We investigate the phase diagrams of the effective spin models derived from Fermi-Hubbard and Bose-Hubbard models with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, using string bond states, one of the quantum tensor network states methods. We focus on the role of quantum fluctuation effect in stabilizing the exotic spin phases in these models. For boson systems, and when the ratio between inter-particle and intra-particle interaction $\lambda > 1$, the out-of-plane ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases obtained from quantum simulations are the same to those obtained from classic model. However, the quantum order-by-disorder effect reduces the classical in-plane XY-FM and XY-vortex phases to the quantum X/Y-FM and X/Y-stripe phase when $\lambda < 1$. The spiral phase and skyrmion phase can be realized in the presence of quantum fluctuation. For the Fermi-Hubbard model, the quantum fluctuation energies are always important in the whole parameter regime. %, which are much larger than those of the Bose model. A general picture to understand the phase diagrams from symmetry point of view is also presented.
The stepped spin-Peierls phase transition in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 quantum XY-model

Abstract:Using an extension of the Jordan-Wigner transformation (JWT) in two dimensions, the effects of weak interchain coupling on the spin-Peierls (SP) system is studied. The magnetic interaction is considered to be a quantum XY-interaction, and the spin-lattice distortion is treated quasiclassically. On the analogy of the stepped Peierls transition theory, we propose a stepped SP transition theory. We find that, when any finite transverse coupling J perpendicular to is introduced between nearest chains, the usual SP transition will be modified, and the dimerization and the opening of the gap will no longer occur simultaneously. This leads to the appearance of a gapless SP phase over a certain temperature region.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose the quantum spin pumping in quantum spin systems where an applied electric field (E) and magnetic field (H) cause a finite spin gap to its critical ground state. When these systems are Subject to alternating electromangetic fields; (E, H) = (sin 2 pi t/T, cos 2 pi t/T) and travel along the loop Gamma(loop) which encloses their critical ground state in this E-H phase diagram, the locking potential in the sine-Gordon model slides and changes its minimum. As a result, the phase operator acquires 2 pi holonomy during one cycle along Gamma(loop), which means that the quantized spin current has been transported through the bulk systems during this adiabatic process. The relevance to real systems such as Cu-benzoate and Yb4As3 is also discussed.

Abstract:We predict a general local spin-flip transition mechanism caused by magnetic quantum impurities in (partially) polarized phases of quantum magnets in the absence of conservation laws. This transition arises when a magnon bound state crosses zero energy as function of the magnetic field. As application, we study 2D van der Waals magnets described by the Kitaev-Heisenberg honeycomb model which applies to the transition metal trihalides CrI$_3$ and $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. We consider adatom and substitutional impurity positions, and show how spin-flip transitions can be detected in scanning tunneling spectroscopy.

Spin liquid phase in the semiclassical theory of the Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice with ring exchange

Abstract:We investigate the effect of ring-exchange on the ground-state properties and magnetic excitations of the $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice with ring-exchange at $T = 0$ using linear spin-wave theory. Classically, we find stable Néel, spiral and collinear magnetically ordered phases. Upon including quantum fluctuations to the model, linear spin-wave theory shows that ring exchange induces a large quantum disordered region in the phase diagram, completely wiping out the classically stable collinear phase. Analysis of the spin-wave spectra for each of these three models demonstrates that the large spin-liquid phase observed in the full model is a direct manifestation of competing classical orders. To understand the origin of these competing phases we introduce models where either the four spin contributions from ring exchange, or the renormalization of the Heisenberg terms due to ring exchange are neglected. We find that these two terms favor rather different physics.

Spin-Peierls instability of deconfined quantum critical points

Abstract:Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) are putative phase transitions beyond the Landau paradigm with emergent fractionalized degrees of freedom. The original example of a DQCP is the spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice which features a second order transition between valence bond solid (VBS) and Néel order. The VBS order breaks a lattice symmetry, and the corresponding VBS order parameter may couple to lattice distortion modes (phonons) at appropriate momenta. We investigate a field-theoretic description of the DQCP in the presence of such a spin-lattice coupling. We show that treating phonons as classical lattice distortions leads to a relevant monopole-phonon interaction inducing an instability towards a distorted lattice by an analogous mechanism to the spin-Peierls instability in one dimension. Consequently, there is a breakdown of the DQCP which generally becomes a strong first-order transition. Taking into account the full quantum nature of the phonons, we argue that the continuous DQCP persists above a critical phonon frequency. Lastly, we comment on the connection to general gapless, deconfined gauge theories.

Abstract:The pseudogap metal phase of the hole-doped cuprates can be described by small Fermi surfaces of electron-like quasiparticles, which enclose a volume violating the Luttinger relation. This violation requires the existence of additional fractionalized excitations which can be viewed as fractionalized remnants of the paramagnon. We fractionalize the paramagnon into bosonic spinons, and present a gauge theory of bosonic spinons, a Higgs field, and an ancilla layer of fermions coupled to the original electrons. Along with the small Fermi surface metal, this theory displays conventional phases: the Fermi liquid with a low-energy paramagnon mode, and phases with spin density wave order. We follow the evolution of the electronic photoemission spectrum across these quantum phase transitions. We consider both the two-sublattice Néel and incommensurate spin density wave phases.

Effects of Peierls phases in open linear chains

Abstract:The introduction of Peierls phases in open tight-binding chains without closed paths in either real or synthetic dimensions is understood to be physically inconsequential, as one assumes they can always be gauged away. Here, we show that this assumption does not necessarily hold for all systems in open chains, as closed paths may appear in the Fock space where these phases can lead to the creation of magnetic flux analogs with physical effects. This idea is first illustrated in the quadratic Kitaev model, where different patterns for the Peierls phases are studied and their independent manipulation is seen to be able to drive the appearance of topological states and Majorana flat bands. We then consider a system with quartic interactions, namely an extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) open chain with a finite Peierls phase associated with the hopping terms. Focusing on the strong interactions limit of the two-body sector, we show the decisive influence of these phases on the two-band spectrum of the higher energy subspace, which behaves as an effective sawtooth chain with magnetic flux at each plaquette. In particular, both the width of the energy gap between the two bands and the position of the in-gap edge states can be controlled by the Peierls phase. Finally, by translating this two-particle one-dimensional (1D) system into a single-particle two-dimensional (2D) one, and subsequently mapping it onto an equivalent electrical LC circuit, we identify a parameter set for which in-gap states are only present for certain finite phase values. Tuning the circuit to these parameters generates the corresponding boundary voltage states, providing an experimentally detectable signature of the effects induced by manipulating Peierls phases in a model built on an open linear chain.

A Unified Theoretical Description of the Thermodynamical Properties of Spin Crossover with Magnetic Interactions

Abstract:After the discovery of the phenomena of light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST), the functional properties of metal complexes have been studied intensively. Among them, cooperative phenomena involving low spin-high spin (spin-crossover) transition and magnetic ordering have attracted interests, and it has become necessary to formulate a unified description of both phenomena. In this work, we propose a model in which they can be treated simultaneously by extending the Wajnflasz-Pick model including a magnetic interaction. We found that this new model is equivalent to Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) Hamiltonian with degenerate levels. This model provides a unified description of the thermodynamic properties associated with various types of systems, such as spin-crossover (SC) solids and Prussian blue analogues (PBA). Here, the high spin fraction and the magnetization are the order parameters describing the cooperative phenomena of the model. We present several typical temperature dependences of the order parameters and we determine the phase diagram of the system using the mean-field theory and Monte Carlo simulations. We found that the magnetic interaction drives the SC transition leading to re-entrant magnetic and first-order SC transitions.

Phases and Exotic Phase Transitions of a Two-Dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model

Abstract:We study a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger electron-phonon model on a square lattice by means of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The addition of a symmetry-allowed interaction permits analytical integration over the phonons at the expense of discrete Hubbard-Stratonovich fields with imaginary-time correlations. Using single-spin-flip and global updates, we investigate the phase diagram at the O(4)-symmetric point as a function of hopping $t$ and phonon frequency $\omega_0$. For $t=0$, where electron hopping is boson assisted, the model maps onto an unconstrained $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory. A key quantity is the emergent effective flux per plaquette, which equals $\pi$ in the assisted-hopping regime and vanishes for large $t$. Phases in the former regime can be understood in terms of instabilities of emergent Dirac fermions. Our results support a direct and continuous transition between a $(\pi,0)$ valence bond solid (VBS) and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with increasing $\omega_0$. For large $t$ and small $\omega_0$, we find finite-temperature signatures, a disordered pseudogap phase, of a previously reported $(\pi,\pi)$ VBS ground state related to a nesting instability. With increasing $\omega_0$, AFM order again emerges.

Abstract:: The spin-Peierls (SP) phase transition of the inorganic compound CuGeO 3 is theoretically studied on the basis of Heisenberg model using Jordan-Wigner transformation (JWT) by mean-field approach. The magnetic interaction is considered to be the quasi-one-dimensional Cu 2+ (spin-1/2) Heisenberg chain, and the spin-lattice distortion is expressed quasiclassically. We found that the interchain coupling between the chains leads to the occurrence of gapless dimerization (or stepped SP) phase. As the interchain coupling decreases, the difference between the dimerization temperature t D and the gap-opening temperature t G decreases. If the interchain coupling is small enough, then the difference should be too small to be observed experimentally.

Abstract:In many antiferromagnetic, quasi-two-dimensional materials, doping with holes leads to "stripe" phases, in which the holes congregate along antiphase domain walls in the otherwise antiferromagnetic texture. Using a suitably parametrized two-dimensional Heisenberg model on a square lattice, we study the spin wave spectra of well-ordered spin stripes, comparing bond-centered antiphase domain walls to site-centered antiphase domain walls for a range of spacings between the stripes and for stripes both aligned with the lattice ("vertical") and oriented along the diagonals of the lattice ("diagonal"). Our results establish that there are qualitative differences between the expected neutron scattering responses for the bond-centered and site-centered cases. In particular, bond-centered stripes of odd spacing generically exhibit more elastic peaks than their site-centered counterparts. For inelastic scattering, we find that bond-centered stripes produce more spin wave bands than site-centered stripes of the same spacing and that bond-centered stripes produce rather isotropic low energy spin wave cones for a large range of parameters, despite local microscopic anisotropy. We find that extra scattering intensity due to the crossing of spin wave modes (which may be linked to the "resonance peak" in the cuprates) is more likely for diagonal stripes, whether site- or bond-centered, whereas spin wave bands generically repel, rather than cross, when stripes are vertical.

Abstract:A complicating factor in the realization and observation of quantum spin liquids in materials is the ubiquitous presence of other degrees of freedom, in particular lattice distortion modes (phonons). These provide additional routes for relieving magnetic frustration, thereby possibly destabilizing spin-liquid ground states. In this work, we focus on triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets, where recent numerical evidence suggests the presence of an extended U(1) Dirac spin liquid phase which is described by compact quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions (QED$_3$), featuring gapless spinons and monopoles as gauge excitations, and believed to flow to a strongly-coupled fixed point with conformal symmetry. Using complementary perturbation theory and scaling arguments, we show that a symmetry-allowed coupling between (classical) finite-wavevector lattice distortions and monopole operators of the U(1) Dirac spin liquid generally induces a spin-Peierls instability towards a (confining) 12-site valence-bond solid state. We support our theoretical analysis with state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group simulations. Away from the limit of static distortions, we demonstrate that the phonon energy gap establishes a parameter regime where the spin liquid is expected to be stable, and show that the monopole-lattice coupling leads to softening of the phonon in analogy to the Kohn anomaly. We discuss the applicability of our results to similar systems, in particular the Dirac spin liquid on the Kagome lattice.

Spin Casimir Effect in Noncollinear Quantum Antiferromagnets: Torque Equilibrium Spin Wave Approach

Abstract:The Casimir effect is a general phenomenon in physics, which arises when the vacuum fluctuation of an arbitrary field is modified by static or slowly varying boundary. However, its spin version is rarely addressed, mainly due to the fact that a macroscopic boundary in quantum spin systems is hard to define. In this article, we explore the spin Casimir effect induced by the zero-point fluctuation of spin waves in a general non-collinear ordered quantum antiferromagnet. This spin Casimir effect results in a spin torque between local spins and further causes various singular and divergent results in the framework of spin-wave theory, which invalidate the standard $1/S$ expansion procedure. To avoid this dilemma, we develop a self-consistent spin-wave expansion approach, which preserves the spin-wave expansion away from singularities and divergence. A detailed spin-wave analysis of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice is undertaken within our approach. Our results indicate that the spiral order is only stable in the region $0.5<\alpha<1.2$, where $\alpha$ is the ratio of the coupling constants. In addition, the instability in the region $1.2<\alpha<2$ is owing to the spin Casimir effect instead of the vanishing sublattice magnetization. And this extended spiral instable region may host some quantum disordered phases besides the quantum order by disorder induced Neel phase. Furthermore, our method provides an efficient and convenient tool that can estimate the correct exchange parameters and outline the quantum phase diagrams, which can be useful for experimental fitting processes in frustrated quantum magnets.

Abstract:We study the non-equilibrium phase diagram of a fully-connected Ising p-spin model, for generic p > 2, and investigate its robustness with respect to the inclusion of spin-wave fluctuations, resulting from a ferromagnetic, short-range spin interaction. In particular, we investigate the dynamics of the mean-field model after a quantum quench: we observe a new dynamical phase transition which is either first or second order depending on the even or odd parity of p, in stark contrast with its thermal counterpart which is first order for all p. The dynamical phase diagram is qualitatively modified by the fluctuations introduced by a short-range interaction which drive the system always towards various prethermal paramagnetic phases determined by the strength of time dependent fluctuations of the magnetization.

Abstract:The mixed spin-1 and spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with regularly alternating monomeric spin-1 sites and square-plaquette spin-1/2 sites is investigated using variational technique, localized-magnon approach, exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The investigated model has in a magnetic field an extraordinarily rich ground-state phase diagram, which includes the uniform and cluster-based Haldane phases, two ferrimagnetic phases of Lieb-Mattis type, two quantum spin liquids and two bound magnon crystals in addition to the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. The lowest-energy eigenstates in a highly-frustrated parameter region belong to flat bands and hence, low-temperature thermodynamics above the bound magnon-crystal ground states can be satisfactorily described within the localized-magnon approach. The variational method provides an exact evidence for the magnon-crystal phase with a character of the monomer-tetramer ground state at zero field, while another magnon-crystal phase with a single bound magnon at each square plaquette is found in a high-field region. A diversity of quantum ground states gives rise to manifold zero-temperature magnetization curves, which may involve up to four wide intermediate plateaus at zero, one-sixth, one-third and two-thirds of the saturation magnetization, two quantum spin-liquid regions and two tiny plateaus at one-ninth and one-twelfth of the saturation magnetization corresponding to the fragmentized cluster-based Haldane phases.

Bond disorder in extended Heisenberg-Kitaev models: Spin textures and in-gap states in the high-field regime

Abstract:We study the effect of bond disorder in extended Heisenberg-Kitaev models on the honeycomb lattice, relevant for materials such as $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, in the semiclassical limit using a combination of T-matrix and real-space spin-wave approaches. Focusing on the regime of large applied magnetic field, we discuss two distinct but related disorder-induced phenomena, namely spin textures in the vicinity of isolated impurities and magnetic excitations below the bulk gap. A finite impurity concentration smears the field-tuned phase transition and turns the isolated in-gap states into impurity bands. As a result, there is a large field regime above the bulk transition into the high-field phase where impurity-induced states fill the bulk spin gap. We illustrate the field dependence of these in-gap states for parameters relevant for $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, and we connect our results to heat-transport and NMR data which indicated their presence.
