Abstract:One of the observational evidences in support of the "thermonuclear runaway model" for the classical nova outburst relies on the accompanying nucleosynthesis. In this paper, we stress the relevant role played by nucleosynthesis in our understanding of the nova phenomenon by constraining models through a comparison with both the atomic abundance determinations from the ejecta and the isotopic ratios measured in presolar grains of a likely nova origin. Furthermore, the endpoint of nova nucleosynthesis provides hints for the understanding of the mixing process responsible for the enhanced metallicities found in the ejecta, and reveals also information on the properties of the underlying white dwarf (mass, luminosity...). We discuss first the interplay between nova outbursts and the Galactic chemical abundances: Classical nova outbursts are expected to be the major source of 13C, 15N and 17O in the Galaxy, and to contribute to the abundances of other species with A < 40, such as 7Li or 26Al. We describe the main nuclear path during the course of the explosion, with special emphasis on the synthesis of radioactive species, of particular interest for the gamma-ray output predicted from novae (7Li, 18F, 22Na, 26Al). An overview of the recent discovery of presolar nova candidate grains, as well as a discussion of the role played by nuclear uncertainties associated with key reactions of the NeNa-MgAl and Si-Ca regions, are also given.

Abstract:The production of ^7 Li and ^7 Be during the explosive hydrogen-burning that occurs in nova explosions is computed by means of a hydrodynamic code able to treat both the accretion and the explosion stages. Large overproduction factors with respect to solar abundances are obtained, the exact value depending mainly on the chemical composition of the envelope. Although the final ejected masses are small, these results indicate that novae can contribute to the ^7 Li enrichment of the interstellar medium. Furthermore, since ^7 Be decays emiting a gamma-ray (478 KeV), with a half-life of 53.3 days, the synthesis of ^7 Li could be tested during the INTEGRAL mission.

Extended Calculations of Energy Levels and Transition Rates of Nd ii-iv Ions for Application to Neutron Star Mergers

Abstract:The coalescence of a binary neutron star gives rise to electromagnetic emission, known as a kilonova, that is powered by radioactive decays of r-process nuclei. Observations of a kilonova associated with GW170817 provide a unique opportunity to study heavy element synthesis in the universe. However, the atomic data of r-process elements are not yet complete enough to decipher the light curves and spectral features of kilonovae. In this paper, we perform extended atomic calculations of neodymium (Nd, Z = 60) to study the impact of the accuracy in atomic calculations on astrophysical opacities. By employing multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock and relativistic configuration interaction methods, we calculate the energy levels and transition data of electric dipole transitions for Nd ii, Nd iii, and Nd iv ions. Compared with previous calculations, our new results provide better agreement with the experimental data. The energy level accuracies achieved in the present work are 10%, 3%, and 11% for Nd ii, Nd iii, and Nd iv, respectively, compared to the NIST database. We confirm that the overall properties of the opacity are not significantly affected by the accuracies of the atomic calculations. The impact on the Planck mean opacity is up to a factor of 1.5, which affects the timescale of kilonovae by at most 20%. However, we find that the wavelength-dependent features in the opacity are affected by the accuracies of the calculations. We emphasize that accurate atomic calculations, in particular for low-lying energy levels, are important to provide predictions of kilonova light curves and spectra.

A Sucrose Solution Application to the Study of Model Biological Membranes

Abstract:The small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering, time resolved X-ray small-angle and wide-angle diffraction coupled with differential scanning calorimetry have been applied to the investigation of unilamellar and multilamellar dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) vesicles in sucrose buffers with sucrose concentrations from 0 to 60%. Sucrose buffer decreased vesicle size and polydispersity and increased an X-ray contrast between phospholipid membrane and bulk solvent sufficiently. No influence of sucrose on the membrane thickness or mutual packing of hydrocarbon chains has been detected. The region of sucrose concentrations 30%-40% created the best experimental conditions for X-ray small-angle experiments with phospholipid vesicles.

Abstract:Merging neutron stars produce "kilonovae"—electromagnetic transients powered by the decay of unstable nuclei synthesized via rapid neutron capture (the r-process) in material that is gravitationally unbound during inspiral and coalescence. Kilonova emission, if accurately interpreted, can be used to characterize the masses and compositions of merger-driven outflows, helping to resolve a long-standing debate about the origins of r-process material in the Universe. We explore how the uncertain properties of nuclei involved in the r-process complicate the inference of outflow properties from kilonova observations. Using r-process simulations, we show how nuclear physics uncertainties impact predictions of radioactive heating and element synthesis. For a set of models that span a large range in both predicted heating and final abundances, we carry out detailed numerical calculations of decay product thermalization and radiation transport in a kilonova ejecta with a fixed mass and density profile. The light curves associated with our models exhibit great diversity in their luminosities, with peak brightness varying by more than an order of magnitude. We also find variability in the shape of the kilonova light curves and their color, which in some cases runs counter to the expectation that increasing levels of lanthanide and/or actinide enrichment will be correlated with longer, dimmer, redder emission.

Abstract:The explosive burning that drives nova eruptions results in unique nucleosynthesis that heavily over-produces certain isotopes relative to the solar abundance. However, novae are often ignored when considering the chemical evolution of our Galaxy due to their low ejecta masses. Galactic chemical evolution studies including novae are rare and have previously relied upon simplified treatments for the behaviour of nova populations. In this work, we use previously computed synthetic nova populations and the galactic chemical evolution code OMEGA+ to assess the impact that novae have on the evolution of stable elemental and isotopic abundances. We combine populations of novae computed using the binary population synthesis code with the galactic chemical evolution code OMEGA+ and detailed, white dwarf mass-dependent nova yields to model the nucleosynthetic contributions of novae to the evolution of the Milky Way. We consider three different nova yield profiles, each corresponding to a different set of nova yield calculations. We examine which nova sites contribute most to which isotopes. Despite novae from low-mass white dwarfs (WDs) dominating nova ejecta contributions, we find that novae occurring on massive WDs are still able to contribute significantly to many isotopes, particularly those with high mass numbers. We find that novae can produce up to 35 of the Galactic C and N mass by the time the model Galaxy reaches Fe/H = 0, and earlier in the evolution of the Galaxy (between Fe/H = -2 and -1) novae may have been the dominant source of N. Predictions for C/Fe N/Fe C/ C, and N/ N abundances ratios vary by up to 0.2 dex at Fe/H = 0 and by up to 0.7 dex in N/Fe and N/ N between Fe/H = -2 and -1 (corresponding approximately to Galactic ages of 170 Myr and 1 Gyr in our model). The Galactic evolution of other stable isotopes (excluding Li) is not noticeably affected by including novae. For most isotopes, agreement is generally good between the three different yield profiles we consider. Isotopes where agreement is relatively poor include: He (especially at high Li O F, and the >1.3 M regime of Si S S Cl, and Ar.

A New 17F(p,gamma)18Ne Reaction Rate and Its Implications for Nova Nucleosynthesis

Abstract:Proton capture by 17F plays an important role in the synthesis of nuclei in nova explosions. A revised rate for this reaction, based on a measurement of the 1H(17F,p)17F excitation function using a radioactive 17F beam at ORNL's Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility, is used to calculate the nucleosynthesis in nova outbursts on the surfaces of 1.25 and 1.35 solar mass ONeMg white dwarfs and a 1.00 solar mass CO white dwarf. We find that the new 17F(p,gamma)18Ne reaction rate changes the abundances of some nuclides (e.g., 17O) synthesized in the hottest zones of an explosion on a 1.35 solar mass white dwarf by more than a factor of 10,000 compared to calculations using some previous estimates for this reaction rate, and by more than a factor of 3 when the entire exploding envelope is considered. In a 1.25 solar mass white dwarf nova explosion, this new rate changes the abundances of some nuclides synthesized in the hottest zones by more than a factor of 600, and by more than a factor of 2 when the entire exploding envelope is considered. Calculations for the 1.00 solar mass white dwarf nova show that this new rate changes the abundance of 18Ne by 21%, but has negligible effect on all other nuclides. Comparison of model predictions with observations is also discussed.

Abstract:Context. An accurate 28 P( p , γ ) 29 S reaction rate is crucial to defining the nucleosynthesis products of explosive hydrogen burning in ONe novae. Using the recently released nuclear mass of 29 S, together with a shell model and a direct capture calculation, we reanalyzed the 28 P( p , γ ) 29 S thermonuclear reaction rate and its astrophysical implication. Aims. We focus on improving the astrophysical rate for 28 P( p , γ ) 29 S based on the newest nuclear mass data. Our goal is to explore the impact of the new rate and associated uncertainties on the nova nucleosynthesis. Methods. We evaluated this reaction rate via the sum of the isolated resonance contribution instead of the previously used Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. The corresponding rate uncertainty at different energies was derived using a Monte Carlo method. Nova nucleosynthesis is computed with the 1D hydrodynamic code SHIVA. Results. The contribution from the capture on the first excited state at 105.64 keV in 28 P is taken into account for the first time. We find that the capture rate on the first excited state in 28 P is up to more than 12 times larger than the ground-state capture rate in the temperature region of 2.5 × 10 7 K to 4 × 10 8 K, resulting in the total 28 P( p , γ ) 29 S reaction rate being enhanced by a factor of up to 1.4 at ~1 × 10 9 K. In addition, the rate uncertainty has been quantified for the first time. It is found that the new rate is smaller than the previous statistical model rates, but it still agrees with them within uncertainties for nova temperatures. The statistical model appears to be roughly valid for the rate estimation of this reaction in the nova nucleosynthesis scenario. Using the 1D hydrodynamic code SHIVA, we performed the nucleosynthesis calculations in a nova explosion to investigate the impact of the new rates of 28 P( p , γ ) 29 S. Our calculations show that the nova abundance pattern is only marginally affected if we use our new rates with respect to the same simulations but statistical model rates. Finally, the isotopes whose abundance is most influenced by the present 28 P( p , γ ) 29 S uncertainty are 28 Si, 33,34 S, 35,37 Cl, and 36 Ar, with relative abundance changes at the level of only 3% to 4%.

Nucleosynthesis in jet-driven and jet-associated supernovae

Abstract:In contrast to regular core-collapse supernovae, explosions of rapidly rotating massive stars can develop jets, fast collimated outflows directed along the rotational axis. Depending on the rate of rotation and the magnetic field strength before collapse as well as on possible mechanisms amplifying the magnetic field, such a core can explode magnetorotationally rather than via the standard supernova mechanism based on neutrino heating. This scenario can explain the highest kinetic energies observed in the class of hypernovae. On longer time scales, rotation and magnetic fields can play an important role in the engine of long gamma-ray burst powered by proto-magnetars or hyperaccreting black holes in collapsars. Both classes of events are characterized by relativistic jets and winds driven by neutrinos or magnetic spin-down of the central objects. The nucleosynthesis in these events includes the production of Fe group elements, including a possibly enhanced synthesis of radioactive 56Ni leading to high peak luminosities. Additionally, these events are, out of all stellar core-collapse events the ones most likely to allow for the formation of the heaviest nuclei via rapid neutron captures. Increasingly sophisticated numerical simulations indicate that at least a limited r-process is possible, though it remains open how robust this result is against variations in the numerical methods and the initial conditions. If so, supernovae with jets could contribute to the observed galactic chemical enrichment, in particular at early times before neutron-star mergers might be able to set in.

Gamma rays from Nebulae around Recurrent Novae

Abstract:Novae were discovered to emit transient gamma rays during the period of several days to a few weeks after initial explosion, indicating presence of acceleration processes of particles in their expanding shells. In the case of recurrent novae, electrons can be in principle accelerated in the nova shells for the whole recurrence period of nova producing delayed $\gamma$ ray emission as considered in Bednarek (2022). Here we extend the ideas presented in this article by considering the fate of electrons which diffuse out of the shells of novae supplying fresh relativistic electrons to the recurrent nova super-remnants during the whole active period of nova ($\ge 10^4$ yrs). We develop a model for the acceleration of electrons and their escape from the nova shells. The electrons within the recurrent nova super-remnants produce $\gamma$ rays in the comptonization process of the radiation from the red giant companion and the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. As an example, the case of a symbiotic nova RS Oph (with the recurrence period estimated on $\sim$10-50 yrs) is considered in more detail. Predicted $\gamma$-ray emission from the nova super-remnant around RS Oph is discussed in the context of its observability by satellite experiments (i.e. Fermi-LAT) as well as current and future Cherenkov telescopes.

Radiative-transfer modeling of supernovae in the nebular-phase. A novel treatment of chemical mixing in spherical symmetry

Abstract:Supernova (SN) explosions, through the metals they release, play a pivotal role in the chemical evolution of the Universe and the origin of life. Nebular phase spectroscopy constrains such metal yields, for example through forbidden line emission associated with OI, CaII, FeII, or FeIII. Fluid instabilities during the explosion produce a complex 3D ejecta structure, with considerable macroscopic, but no microscopic, mixing of elements. This structure sets a formidable challenge for detailed nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer modeling, which is generally limited to 1D in grid-based codes. Here, we present a novel and simple method that allows for macroscopic mixing without any microscopic mixing, thereby capturing the essence of mixing in SN explosions. With this new technique, the macroscopically mixed ejecta is built by shuffling in mass space, or equivalently in velocity space, the shells from the unmixed coasting ejecta. The method requires no change to the radiative transfer, but necessitates high spatial resolution to resolve the rapid variation in composition with depth inherent to this shuffled-shell structure. We show results for a few radiative-transfer simulations for a Type II SN explosion from a 15Msun progenitor star. Our simulations capture the strong variations in temperature or ionization between the various shells that are rich in H, He, O, or Si. Because of nonlocal energy deposition, gamma rays permeate through an extended region of the ejecta, making the details of the shell arrangement unimportant. The greater physical consistency of the method delivers spectral properties at nebular times that are more reliable, in particular in terms of individual emission line strengths, which may serve to constrain the SN yields and, for core collapse SNe, the progenitor mass. The method works for all SN types.

Abstract:Some features of the physics of radiation-dominated shock waves are discussed with emphasis on the peculiarities which are important for correct numerical modelling of shock breakouts in supernova. With account of those peculiarities, a number of models for different supernova types are constructed based on multigroup radiation transfer coupled to hydrodynamics. We describe the implementation of a new algorithm rada, designed for modelling photon transfer at extremely relativistic motions of matter, into our older code stella. The results of numerical simulations of light curves and continuum spectra are presented. The influence of effects of photon scattering on electrons, of thermalization depth and of special relativity in transfer equation is considered. Some cases are demonstrated, when the appearance of hard X-ray emission is possible at the shock breakout. The necessary refinements in numerical algorithms for radiative transfer and hydrodynamics are pointed out. Prospects for using the results of numerical simulation to analyse and interpret available and future data from space observatories are discussed.

Core-collapse supernova simulations with reduced nucleosynthesis networks

Abstract:We present core-collapse supernova simulations including nuclear reaction networks that impact explosion dynamics and nucleosynthesis. The different composition treatment can lead to changes in the neutrino heating in the vicinity of the shock by modifying the number of nucleons and thus the neutrino-opacity of the region. This reduces the ram pressure outside the shock and allows an easier expansion. The energy released by the nuclear reactions during collapse also slows down the accretion and aids the shock expansion. In addition, nuclear energy generation in the postshocked matter produces up to $20\%$ more energetic explosions. Nucleosynthesis is affected due to the different dynamic evolution of the explosion. Our results indicate that the energy generation from nuclear reactions helps to sustain late outflows from the vicinity of the proto-neutron star, synthesizing more neutron-rich species. Furthermore, we show that there are systematic discrepancies between the ejecta calculated with in-situ and ex-situ reaction networks. These differences stem from the intrinsic characteristics of evolving the composition in hydrodynamic simulations or calculating it with Lagrangian tracer particles. The mass fractions of some Ca, Ti, Cr, and Fe isotopes are consistently underproduced in postprocessing calculations, leading to different nucleosynthesis paths. Our results suggest that large in-situ nuclear reaction networks are important for a realistic feedback of the energy generation, the neutrino heating, and a more accurate ejecta composition.

Astrophysical Fluids of Novae: High Resolution Pre-decay X-ray spectrum of V4743 Sagittarii

Abstract:Eight X-ray observations of V4743 Sgr (2002), observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton are presented. The nova turned off some time between days 301.9 and 371, and the X-ray flux subsequently decreased from day 301.9 to 526 following an exponential decline time scale of $(96 \pm 3)$ days. We use the absorption lines present in the SSS spectrum for diagnostic purposes, and characterize the physics and the dynamics of the expanding atmosphere during the explosion of the nova. The information extracted from this first stage is then used as input for computing full photoionization models of the ejecta in V4743 Sgr. The SSS spectrum is modeled with a simple black-body and multiplicative Gaussian lines, which provides us of a general kinematical picture of the system, before it decays to its faint phase (Ness et al. 2003). In the grating spectra taken between days 180.4 and 370, we can resolve the line profiles of absorption lines arising from H-like and He-like C, N, and O, including transitions involving higher principal quantum numbers. Except for a few interstellar lines, all lines are significantly blue-shifted, yielding velocities between 1000 and 6000 km/s which implies an ongoing mass loss. It is shown that significant expansion and mass loss occur during this phase of the explosion, at a rate $\dot{M} \approx (3-5) \times 10^{-4} ~ (\frac{L}{L_{38}}) ~ M_{\odot}/yr$. Our measurements show that the efficiency of the amount of energy used for the motion of the ejecta, defined as the ratio between the kinetic luminosity $L_{\rm kin}$ and the radiated luminosity $L_{\rm rad}$, is of the order of one.

Abstract:The degree to which the (p,gamma) and (p,alpha) reactions destroy 18F at temperatures 1-4x10^8 K is important for understanding the synthesis of nuclei in nova explosions and for using the long-lived radionuclide 18F, a target of gamma-ray astronomy, as a diagnostic of nova mechanisms. The reactions are dominated by low-lying proton resonances near the 18F+p threshold (E_x=6.411 MeV in 19Ne). To gain further information about these resonances, we have used a radioactive 18F beam from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility to selectively populate corresponding mirror states in 19F via the inverse d(18F,p)19F neutron transfer reaction. Neutron spectroscopic factors were measured for states in 19F in the excitation energy range 0-9 MeV. Widths for corresponding proton resonances in 19Ne were calculated using a Woods-Saxon potential. The results imply significantly lower 18F(p,gamma)19Ne and 18F(p,alpha)15O reaction rates than reported previously, thereby increasing the prospect of observing the 511-keV annihilation radiation associated with the decay of 18F in the ashes ejected from novae.

Gamma-Ray Lines from Asymmetric Supernovae

Abstract:We present 3-dimensional SPH simulations of supernova explosions from 100 seconds to 1 year after core-bounce. By extending our modelling efforts to a 3-dimensional hydrodynamics treatment, we are able to investigate the effects of explosion asymmetries on mixing and gamma-ray line emergence in supernovae. A series of initial explosion conditions are implemented, including jet-like and equatorial asymmetries of varying degree. For comparison, symmetric explosion models are also calculated. A series of time slices from the explosion evolution are further analyzed using a 3-dimensional Monte Carlo gamma-ray transport code. The emergent hard X- and gamma-ray spectra are calculated as a function of both viewing angle and time, including trends in the gamma-ray line profiles. We find significant differences in the velocity distribution of radioactive nickel between the symmetric and asymmetric explosion models. The effects of this spatial distribution change are reflected in the overall high energy spectrum, as well as in the individual gamma-ray line profiles.

Abstract:The origin of bright X-ray emission lines that appear late in a nova eruption remains largely a puzzle. We present two high-resolution X-ray grating spectra of the classical nova YZ Ret, observed 77 and 115 days post-eruption, using XMM-Newton and Chandra , respectively. Both spectra feature resolved emission lines blueshifted by $v = -1500$ km s$^{-1}$ and broadened by $\sigma_v=500$ km s$^{-1}$. The two spectra are well described by a collisionally ionized plasma of $kT\sim 70$ eV that dimmed by a factor of $\sim40$ between the two exposures. The spectra also show narrow radiative recombination continua (RRCs) of C$^{+4}$, C$^{+5}$, and N$^{+5}$, indicating the interaction of the hot ionized plasma with cold electrons of $kT\sim 2$ eV. The high-$n$ Rydberg series of C$^{+4}$ is anomalously bright, allowing us to measure the electron density through continuum lowering, which is in agreement with the He-like N$^{+5}$ density diagnostic of $n_e=(1.7\pm0.4)\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. The high population of these high-$n$ levels constitutes the best evidence to date of charge exchange (CX) with neutral H in an astrophysical ionized plasma. The remarkable fact that the velocity and plasma temperature are the same after 38 days, despite the high density and decreasing flux is evidence for ongoing heating. We suggest the heating is due to a reverse shock in the nova ejecta, which forms a thin X-ray shell. The narrow RRCs and CX are attributed to direct mixing with cold gas, which overtakes the hot plasma either from the shock front, or through the contact discontinuity.

Abstract:We study the heating rate of r-process nuclei and thermalization of decay products in neutron star merger ejecta and macronova (kilonova) light curves. Thermalization of charged decay products, i.e., electrons, $\alpha$-particles, and fission fragments is calculated according to their injection energy. The $\gamma$-ray thermalization processes are also properly calculated by taking the $\gamma$-ray spectrum of each decay into account. We show that the $\beta$-decay heating rate at later times approaches a power-law decline as $\propto t^{-2.8}$, which agrees with the result of Waxman et al. (2019). We present a new analytic model to calculate macronova light curves, in which the density structure of the ejecta is accounted for. We demonstrate that the observed bolometric light curve and temperature evolution of the macronova associated with GW170817 are reproduced well by the $\beta$-decay heating rate with the solar r-process abundance pattern. We interpret the break in the observed bolometric light curve around a week as a result of the diffusion wave crossing a significant part of the ejecta rather than a thermalization break. We also show that the time-weighted integral of the bolometric light curve (Katz integral) is useful to provide an estimate of the total r-process mass from the observed data, which is independent of the highly uncertain radiative transfer. For the macronova in GW170817, the ejecta mass is robustly estimated as $\approx 0.05M_{\odot}$ for $A_{\rm min}\leq 72$ and $85\leq A_{\rm min}\leq 130$ with the solar r-process abundance pattern. The code for computation of the heating rate and light curve for given initial nuclear abundances is publicly available.

Abstract:We develop a method to compute synthetic kilonova light curves that combines numerical relativity simulations of neutron star mergers and the $\texttt{SNEC}$ radiation-hydrodynamics code. We describe our implementation of initial and boundary conditions, r-process heating, and opacities for kilonova simulations. We validate our approach by carefully checking that energy conservation is satisfied and by comparing the $\texttt{SNEC}$ results with those of two semi-analytic light curve models. We apply our code to the calculation of color light curves for three binaries having different mass ratios (equal and unequal mass) and different merger outcome (short-lived and long-lived remnants). We study the sensitivity of our results to hydrodynamic effects, nuclear physics uncertainties in the heating rates, and duration of the merger simulations. We find that hydrodynamics effects are typically negligible and that homologous expansion is a good approximation in most cases. However, pressure forces can amplify the impact of uncertainties in the radioactive heating rates. We also study the impact of shocks possibly launched into the outflows by a relativistic jet. None of our models match AT2017gfo, the kilonova in GW170817. This points to possible deficiencies in our merger simulations and kilonova models which neglect non-LTE effects and possible additional energy injection from the merger remnant, and to the need to go beyond the assumption of spherical symmetry adopted in this work.
