Abstract:The open supermembrane contribution to the non-perturbative superpotential of bulk space five-branes in heterotic M-theory is presented. We explicitly compute the superpotential for the modulus associated with the separation of a bulk five-brane from an end-of-the-world three-brane. The gauge and κ-invariant boundary strings of such open supermembranes are given and the role of the holomorphic vector bundle on the orbifold fixed plane boundary is discussed in detail.

Phenomenology of Non-Standard Embedding and Five-branes in M-Theory

Abstract:We study the phenomenology of the strong-coupling limit of $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string obtained from M-theory, using a Calabi-Yau compactification. After summarizing the standard embedding results, we concentrate on non-standard embedding vacua as well as vacua where non-perturbative objects as five-branes are present. We analyze in detail the different scales of the theory, eleven-dimensional Planck mass, compactification scale, orbifold scale, and how they are related taking into account higher order corrections. To obtain the phenomenologically favored GUT scale is easier than in standard embedding vacua. To lower this scale to intermediate ($\approx 10^{11}$ GeV) or 1 TeV values or to obtain the radius of the orbifold as large as a millimetre is possible. However, we point out that these special limits are unnatural. Finally, we perform a systematic analysis of the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms. We point out that scalar masses larger than gaugino masses can easily be obtained unlike the standard embedding case and the weakly-coupled heterotic string.

Abstract:A bstract We initiate a study of the holographic duals of a class of four-dimensional = 2 superconformal field theories that are engineered by wrapping M5-branes on a sphere with an irregular puncture. These notably include the strongly-coupled field theories of Argyres-Douglas type. Our solutions are obtained in 7d gauged supergravity, where they take the form of a warped product of AdS 5 and a "half-spindle." The irregular puncture is modeled by a localized M5-brane source in the internal space of the gravity duals. Our solutions feature a realization of supersymmetry that is distinct from the usual topological twist, as well as an interesting Stückelberg mechanism involving the gauge field associated to a generator of the isometry algebra of the internal space. We check the proposed duality by computing the holographic central charge, the flavor symmetry central charge, and the dimensions of various supersymmetric probe M2-branes, and matching these with the dual Argyres-Douglas field theories. Furthermore, we compute the large- N 't Hooft anomalies of the field theories using anomaly inflow methods in M-theory, and find perfect agreement with the proposed duality.

Five-Dimensional Moving Brane Solutions with Four-Dimensional Limiting Behaviour

Abstract:Under certain conditions some solutions to five-dimensional heterotic M-theory can be accurately described by the four-dimensional action of the theory - they have a four-dimensional limit. We consider the connection between solutions of four and five-dimensional heterotic M-theory when moving five-branes are present in the bulk. We begin by describing how to raise the known four-dimensional moving brane solutions to obtain approximate solutions to the five-dimensional theory, presenting for the first time the metric template necessary for this procedure. We then present the first solutions to the five-dimensional theory containing moving five-branes. We can then discuss the connection between our new exact five-dimensional solution and the four-dimensional ones. It is shown that our new solution corresponds to a solution with a static brane in four-dimensions. In other words our new solution could not have been identified as containing a moving brane from a purely four-dimensional viewpoint.

Abstract:We highlight the need for global completion of the field content in the M5-brane sigma-model analogous to Dirac's charge/flux quantization, and we point out that the superspace Bianchi identities on the worldvolume and on its ambient supergravity background constrain the M5's flux-quantization law to be in a non-abelian cohomology theory rationally equivalent to a twisted form of co-Homotopy. In order to clearly bring out this subtle point we give a streamlined re-derivation of the worldvolume 3-flux via M5 "super-embeddings". Finally, assuming the flux-quantization law to actually be in co-Homotopy ("Hypothesis H") we show how this implies Skyrmion-like solitons on general M5-worldvolumes and (abelian) anyonic solitons on the boundaries of "open M5-branes" in heterotic M-theory.

Mid-infrared Hall effect in thin-film metals: Probing the Fermi surface anisotropy in Au and Cu

Abstract:A sensitive mid-infrared (MIR, 900-1100 cm-1, 112-136 meV) photo-elastic polarization modulation technique is used to measure simultaneously Faraday rotation and circular dichroism in thin metal films. These two quantities determine the complex AC Hall conductivity. This novel technique is applied to study Au and Cu thin films at temperatures down to 20 K and magnetic fields up to 8 T. The Hall frequency is consistent with band theory predictions. We report the first measurement of the MIR Hall scattering rate, which is significantly lower than that derived from Drude analysis of zero magnetic field MIR transmission measurements. This difference is qualitatively explained in terms of the anisotropy of the Fermi surface in Au and Cu.

Five-Brane Superpotentials and Heterotic/F-theory Duality

Abstract:Under heterotic/F-theory duality it was argued that a wide class of heterotic five-branes is mapped into the geometry of an F-theory compactification manifold. In four-dimensional compactifications this identifies a five-brane wrapped on a curve in the base of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with a specific F-theory Calabi-Yau fourfold containing the blow-up of the five-brane curve. We argue that this duality can be reformulated by first constructing a non-Calabi-Yau heterotic threefold by blowing up the curve of the five-brane into a divisor with five-brane flux. Employing heterotic/F-theory duality this leads us to the construction of a Calabi-Yau fourfold and four-form flux. Moreover, we obtain an explicit map between the five-brane superpotential and an F-theory flux superpotential. The map of the open-closed deformation problem of a five-brane in a compact Calabi-Yau threefold into a deformation problem of complex structures on a dual Calabi-Yau fourfold with four-form flux provides a powerful tool to explicitly compute the five-brane superpotential.

Amplitudes for Multiple M5 Branes

Abstract:We study N=(m,0) super-Poincare invariant six-dimensional massless and five-dimensional massive on-shell amplitudes. We demonstrate that in six dimensions, all possible three-point amplitudes involving tensor multiplets are necessarily embedded in gravitational theories. For non-gravitational amplitudes we consider instead five-dimensional massive amplitudes with N=(2,0) supersymmetry, aiming at describing the world volume theory of multiple M5 branes compactified on M^{4,1}x S^1. We find non-gravitational amplitudes whose on-shell degrees of freedom are shown to match those of the massive particle states that arise from self-dual strings wrapping a circle. Along the way we find interesting hints of a fermionic symmetry in the (2,0) theory, which accompanies the self-dual tensor gauge symmetry. We also discuss novel theories with (3,0) and (4,0) supersymmetry.

Abstract:We investigate the interrelation between topology and Narain T-duality of heterotic flux vacua. We present evidence that all 5 and 4-dimensional Minkowski space heterotic flux backgrounds with 8 supercharges have a locus in the moduli space with a T-dual description in terms of a compactification on the product of a K3 surface with a circle or a torus. A test of this equivalence is provided by calculating the new supersymmetric index on both sides of the duality. We examine the implications of these dualities for CHL-like orbifolds that reduce the rank of the gauge group, as well as those that lead to minimal supersymmetry in 4 dimensions. We also discuss properties of flux vacua that preserve minimal supersymmetry in 4 dimensions that cannot be related to conventional compactifications by Narain T-duality. Along the way we point out a number of properties of these vacua, including the role played by non-trivial flat gerbes, the appearance of rational worldsheet CFTs in decompactification limits, and the role of attractive K3 surfaces in backgrounds with minimal supersymmetry. Finally, we discuss the dual pairs from the perspective of M-theory/heterotic duality.

Abstract:We study theories with 16 supercharges and a discrete energy spectrum. One class of theories has symmetry group $SU(2|4)$. They arise as truncations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. They include the plane-wave matrix model, $2+1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{2}$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{3}/{Z}_{k}$. We explain how to obtain their gravity duals in a unified way. We explore the regions of the geometry that are relevant for the study of some $1/2$ BPS and near BPS states. This leads to a class of two dimensional (4,4) supersymmetric sigma models with nonzero $H$ flux, including a massive deformed WZW model. We show how to match some features of the string spectrum with the Yang-Mills theory. The other class of theories are also connected to $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and arise by making some of the transverse scalars compact. Their vacua are characterized by a 2D Yang-Mills theory or 3D Chern-Simons theory. These theories realize peculiar super-Poincar\'e symmetry algebras in $2+1$ or $1+1$ dimensions with ``noncentral'' charges. We finally discuss gravity duals of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{1}$.

Abstract:A uniform construction of non-supersymmetric 0-, 4-, 6- and 7-branes in heterotic string theory was announced and outlined in our letter \cite{Kaidi:2023tqo}. In this full paper, we provide details on their properties. Among other things, we discuss the charges carried by the branes, their topological and dynamical stability, the exact worldsheet descriptions of their near-horizon regions, and the relationship of the branes to the mathematical notion of topological modular forms.

Abstract:Recently, Baykara, Tarazi and Vafa discussed the existence of quasicrystalline string vacua that contain a single neutral moduli, the dilaton, and studied compactifications of the non-supersymmetric $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic-string on these spaces. We discuss a specific class of quasi-realistic string vacua with similar properties that has been known since the late eighties and analyse the vacuum energy in several non-supersymmetric examples that correspond to compactifications of tachyon free ten dimensional vacua as well as compactifications of tachyonic ten dimensional vacua. Our analysis uses the Free Fermionic Formalism of the heterotic-string in four dimensions and employs asymmetric boundary conditions that project all the geometrical moduli by Generalised GSO projections. This methodology produces models with both positive and negative spacetime potential at one-loop.

A Twist on Heterotic Little String Duality

Abstract:In this work, we significantly expand the web of T-dualities among heterotic NS5-brane theories with eight supercharges. This is achieved by introducing twists involving outer automorphisms of discrete gauge/flavor factors and tensor multiplet permutations along the compactification circle. We assemble field theory data that we propose as invariants across T-dual theories, comprised of twisted Coulomb branch dimensions, higher group structures and flavor symmetry ranks. Using this data, we establish a detailed field theory correspondence between singularities of the compactification space, the number five-branes in the theory, and the flavor symmetry factors. The twisted theories are realized via M-theory compactifications on non-compact genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds without section. This approach allows us to prove duality of twisted and (un-)twisted theories by leveraging M/F-theory duality and identifying inequivalent torus fibrations in the same geometry. We construct several new 5D theories, including a novel type of CHL-like twisted theory where the two M9 branes are identified. Using their field theory invariants, we also construct their dual theories.

Abstract:We study gravitational anomalies for fivebranes in M theory. We show that an apparent anomaly in diffeomorphisms acting on the normal bundle is cancelled by a careful treatment of the M theory Chern-Simons coupling in the presence of fivebranes. One interesting aspect of our treatment is the way in which a magnetic object (the fivebrane) is smoothed out through coupling to gravity and the resulting relation between antisymmetric tensor gauge transformations and diffeomorphisms in the presence of a fivebrane.

Abstract:We study classical M5 brane solutions in the probe limit in the $AdS_7 \times S^4$ spacetime geometry with worldvolume 3-form flux. These solutions describe the holography of codimension-4 defects in the 6d boundary dual $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetric gauge theories. Starting from some half-BPS solutions which follow stricter BPS conditions, we find a general $\frac{1}{16}$-BPS solution. We show how some of the \textit{giant-like} M5 brane solutions here may be related to the codimension-2 surface operators in the 4d gauge theory.

Abstract:We reexamine the massless spectrum of a heterotic string vacuum at large radius and present two results. The first result is to construct a vector bundle $\mathcal{Q}$ and operator $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$ whose kernel amounts to deformations solving `F-term' type equations. This resolves a dilemma in previous works in which the spin connection is treated as an independent degree of freedom, something that is not the case in string theory. The second result is to utilise the moduli space metric, constructed in previous work, to define an adjoint operator $\overline{\mathcal{D}}^†$. The kernel of $\overline{\mathcal{D}}^†$ amounts to deformations solving `D-term' type equations. Put together, we show there is a vector bundle $\mathcal{Q}$ with a metric, a $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$ operator and a gauge fixing (holomorphic gauge) in which the massless spectrum are harmonic representatives of $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$. This is remarkable as previous work indicated the Hodge decomposition of massless deformations were complicated and in particular not harmonic except at the standard embedding.

Stable Vacua with Realistic Phenomenology and Cosmology in Heterotic M-theory Satisfying Swampland Conjectures

Abstract:We recently described a protocol for computing the potential energy in heterotic M-theory for the dilaton, complex structure and Kähler moduli. This included the leading order non-perturbative contributions to the complex structure, gaugino condensation and worldsheet instantons assuming a hidden sector that contains an anomalous U(1) structure group embedded in $E_8$. In this paper, we elucidate, in detail, the mathematical and computational methods required to utilize this protocol. These methods are then applied to a realistic heterotic M-theory model, the $B-L$ MSSM, whose observable sector is consistent with all particle physics requirements. Within this context, it is shown that the dilaton and universal moduli can be completely stabilized at values compatible with every phenomenological and mathematical constraint -- as well as with $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We also show that the heterotic M-theory vacua are consistent with all well-supported Swampland conjectures based on considerations of string theory and quantum gravity, and we discuss the implications of dark energy theorems for compactified theories.
