Abstract:Observational constraints on the primordial lithium abundance are important for the evaluation of the baryonic density of the universe. Its precise determination however suffers from uncertainties due to the possible depletion of this element inside the stars. Here we present and discuss new results on the lithium abundances in pop II stars obtained with most recent stellar models including the best available physics. We show that it is possible to account for the general behavior of lithium observed in pop II stars without any free parameters. Macroscopic motions inside the stars are needed but it is not necessary to specify their exact nature to interpret the observational data. This constatation allows to derive a parameter-free value for the lithium primordial abundance : log(Lip) = 2.35 +/- .10 in the log(H) = 12 scale.

Abstract:The discrepancy between the predictions of Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the lithium abundance observed in the oldest stars of our Galaxy, known as the cosmological lithium problem, has long been regarded as a challenge to the fields of both cosmology and astrophysics. In light of recent theoretical advances concerning the transport of chemicals and angular momentum in Population I low-mass stars, we re-examine the stellar depletion hypothesis to explain the lithium plateau, which spans a wide range of metallicities over a specific range of stellar effective temperature. We computed stellar evolution models with the code STAREVOL, including the same input physics that enable self-consistent reproduction of the Li depletion in the Sun and stars in open clusters, while accounting for internal rotation consistent with asteroseismic constraints. In addition to atomic diffusion and parametric turbulence, which were considered in previous studies of Li depletion along the plateau, our models include rotation-induced hydrodynamical processes and additional parametric viscosity for the transport of angular momentum as well as penetrative convection with a rotational dependence, and magnetic braking. As in the case of Pop I stars, the mixing obtained with the current prescriptions for vertical and horizontal shear turbulence induced by rotation is insufficient to reproduce the Li constraints, and parametric turbulence is required. Even if the nature of the turbulence has yet to be identified, we show that the compactness of Pop II low-mass dwarf stars shall naturally lead to similar Li depletion over a large domain in the Fe/H \ plane, resulting in a plateau with little dispersion. We calibrated the efficiency of the turbulence to fit the abundance of Li in Pop II stars selected from the GALAH DR3 spectroscopic survey and from an homogeneous reanalysis of abundances from the literature. This calibration also enables the reproduction of lithium and magnesium trends in post-turnoff stars of the globular cluster NGC 6752. The same stellar structure considerations consistently explain the observed change of Li depletion and the dispersion regime for Fe/H above $-1.5$ dex, that is, at the transition in metallicity between Pop II to Pop I stars. Our results provide new constraints to the physical processes that transport chemicals and angular momentum in stellar interiors. They offer a comprehensive way to reproduce the observed Li patterns in low-mass dwarf stars across the entire Galactic metallicity range covered by spectroscopic surveys, including the most Fe-poor regime, as supported by the Li value in the non-CEMP star that lies on the plateau at Fe/H below $-5.8$ dex. Our careful analysis of the other very metal-poor stars with lower Li abundances supports the environmental origin of the so-called meltdown regime. Finally, the expected plateau-to-scatter transition pattern further supports the stellar solution to the cosmological problem.

Abstract:Of all the light elements, lithium is the most sensitive indicator of stellar evolution. This review discusses current data on the abundance of lithium in the atmospheres of A-, F-, G-, and K-stars of different types, as well as the consistency of these data with theoretical predictions. The variety of observed Li abundances is illustrated by the following objects in different stages of evolution: 1) Old stars in the galactic halo, which have a lithium abundance log e(Li)=2.2 (the "lithium plateau") that appears to be 0.5 dex lower than the primordial abundance predicted by cosmological models. 2) Young stars in the galactic disk, which have been used to estimate the contemporary initial lithium abundance log e(Li)=3.2 +/- 0.1 for stars in the Main sequence. Possible sources of lithium enrichment in the interstellar medium during evolution of the galaxy are discussed. 3) Evolving FGK dwarfs in the galactic disk, which have lower log e(Li) for lower effective temperature Teff and mass M. The "lithium dip" near Teff~6600 K in the distribution of log e(Li) with respect to Teff in old clusters is discussed. 4) FGK giants and supergiants, of which most have no lithium at all. This phenomenon is consistent with rotating star model calculations. 5) Lithium rich cold giants with log e(Li) > 2.0 , which form a small, enigmatic group. Theoretical models with rotation can explain the existence of these stars only in the case of low initial rotation velocities V0 < 50 km/s. In all other cases it is necessary to assume recent synthesis of lithium (capture of a giant planet is an alternative). 6) Magnetic Ap-stars, where lithium is concentrated in spots located at the magnetic poles. There the lithium abundance reaches log e(Li)=6. Discrepancies between observations and theory are noted for almost all the stars discussed in this review.
Discovery of a thin lithium plateau among metal-poor red giant branch stars

Abstract:The surface lithium abundance A(Li) of warm metal-poor dwarf stars exhibits a narrow plateau down to [Fe/H]~-2.8 dex, while at lower metallicities the average value drops by 0.3 dex with a significant star-by-star scatter (called lithium meltdown). This behaviour is in conflict with predictions of standard stellar evolution models calculated with the initial A(Li) provided by the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis. The lower red giant branch (LRGB) stars provide a complementary tool to understand the initial A(Li) distribution in metal-poor stars. We have collected a sample of high-resolution spectra of 58 LRGB stars spanning a range of [Fe/H] between ~ -7.0 dex and ~ -1.3 dex. The LRGB stars display an A(Li) distribution clearly different from that of the dwarfs, without signatures of a meltdown and with two distinct components: (a) a thin A(Li) plateau with an average A(Li)=1.09+-0.01 dex (sigma=0.07 dex), and (b) a small fraction of Li-poor stars with A(Li) lower than ~0.7 dex. The A(Li) distribution observed in LRGB stars can be reconciled with an initial abundance close to the cosmological value, by including an additional chemical element transport in stellar evolution models. The required efficiency of this transport allows us to match also the Spite plateau lithium abundance measured in the dwarfs. The emerging scenario is that all metal-poor stars formed with the same initial A(Li) but those that are likely the product of coalescence or that experienced binary mass transfer and show lower A(Li) . We conclude that A(Li) in LRGB stars is qualitatively compatible with the cosmological A(Li) value and that the meltdown observed in dwarf stars does not reflect a real drop of the abundance at birth.

Abstract:I summarize the stellar side of the cosmological lithium problem(s). Evidence from independent studies is accumulating and indicates that stars may very well be fully responsible for lowering their surface lithium from the predicted primordial value to observed levels through internal element-transport mechanisms collectively referred to as atomic diffusion. While atomic diffusion can be modelled from first principles, stellar evolution uses a parametrized representation of convection making it impossible to predict convective-boundary mixing as a vital stellar process moderating atomic diffusion. More work is clearly needed here for a fully quantitative picture of lithium (and metallicity) evolution as stars age. Lastly, note that inferred stellar lithium-6 abundances have all but disappeared.

A Critique of the Spite Plateau, and the Astration of Primordial Lithium

Abstract:We investigate the distribution of the lithium abundances, A(Li), of metal-poor dwarf and subgiant stars within the limits 5500 K < Teff < 6700 K, -6.0 < [Fe/H] < -1.5, and logg > ~3.5 (a superset of parameters first adopted by Spite and Spite), using literature data for some 200 stars. We address the problem of the several methods that yield Teff differences up to 350 K, and hence uncertainties of 0.3 dex in [Fe/H] and A(Li), by anchoring Teff to the Infrared Flux Method. We seek to understand the behaviour of A(Li) as a function of [Fe/H] -- small dispersion at highest [Fe/H], ``meltdown'' at intermediate values (i.e. large spread in Li below the Spite Plateau), and extreme variations at lowest [Fe/H]. Decreasing A(Li) is accompanied by increasing dispersion. Insofar as [Fe/H] increases as the universe ages, the behavior of A(Li) reflects chaotic star formation involving destruction of primordial Li, which settles to the classic Spite Plateau, with A(Li) ~2.3, by the time the Galactic halo reaches [Fe/H] ~ -3.0. We consider three phases: (1) first star formation in C-rich environments ([C/Fe] > 2.3), with depleted Li; (2) silicates-dominated star formation and destruction of primordial Li during pre-main-sequence evolution; and (3) materials from these two phases co-existing and coalescing to form C-rich stars with A(Li) below the Spite Plateau, leading to a toy model with the potential to explain the ``meltdown''. We comment on the results of Mucciarelli et al. on the Lower RGB, and the suggestion of Aguado et al. favouring a lower primordial lithium abundance than generally accepted.

Constraining Extra Mixing during the Main Sequence: What Depletes Lithium Does Not Touch Beryllium

Abstract:Measurement of lithium abundances in solar-type stars have shown that standard models of stellar evolution are incapable of explaining the observed depletion as a function of stellar age. Beryllium is one of the lightest elements that can be measured in stellar photospheres, and it can be burned in relatively low temperatures. Studying its abundances as a function of stellar age can provide important constraints to stellar mixing models, as the level of depletion as a function of time will indicate how deep the photospheric material must be dredged to explain the observed abundances of both elements. In an effort to provide the most stringent constraints for non-standard stellar mixing models, we observed a sample of solar-twins and concomitantly analyzed their lithium and beryllium abundances. Unlike what is typically observed for lithium, we find that beryllium does not decrease as a function of stellar age, constraining models that predict burning of both materials. Based on our data, models that invoke convective overshoot and convective settling are preferred over typical rotationaly-induced mixing models, as the later burn Be in excess while the former do not. Previous works also proposed mixing due to gravity waves as a possible explanation for observed abundances, which can fit our data as well. We also confirm previous finds of an increase in Be abundance as a function of metallicity, indicative of galactic production via cosmic ray spallation.

Lithium in Turn-off Stars in the Globular Cluster M5: A Quest for Primordial Lithium

Abstract:The light element lithium is formed by nucleosynthesis during the Big Bang. Its abundance can help to define the parameters of the early universe. To find this primordial value, it is necessary to determine Li abundances in the oldest stars because it is readily destroyed by nuclear reactions in stellar interiors. We have made high-resolution (~45,000) spectroscopic observations of five identical unevolved turn-off stars in the 13 Gyr old globular cluster M5. In our analysis we find a range in Li abundance of a factor of two; the spread is five times the individual error. The comparison of these results with those for turn-off stars from five other globular clusters reveals similarly large range in Li. Lithium in M5 and the other clusters all have stars above the field star Li plateau, but none are as high as the predictions for primordial Li. The maximum values for Li are the same in all six clusters. Multiple generations of stars are found in many globular clusters; those later generations are expected to have formed from Li-depleted gas. Such second- and later-generation stars would have no Li. However, only one of the six clusters has a few unevolved stars with upper limits on the Li abundance.

Metal induced gap states and Schottky barrier heights at non-reactive GaN/noble metal interfaces

Abstract:We present ab-initio local density FLAPW calculations on non-reactive N-terminated [001] ordered GaN/Ag and GaN/Au interfaces and compare the results (such as metal induced gap states and Schottky barrier heights) with those obtained for GaN/Al, in order to understand the dependence of the relevant electronic properties on the deposited metal. Our results show that the density of gap states is appreciable only in the first semiconductor layer close to the interface. The decay length of the gap states in the semiconductor side is about 2.0 $\pm$ 0.1 Å$\:$ and is independent of the deposited metal, therefore being to a good extent a bulk property of GaN. Our calculated values of the Schottky barrier heights are $\Phi_{B_p}(GaN/Ag)$ = 0.87 eV and $\Phi_{B_p}(GaN/Au)$ = 1.08 eV; both values are smaller than the GaN/Al value ($\Phi_{B_p}(GaN/Al)$ = 1.51 eV) and this quite large spread of values excludes the possibility of a Fermi level pinning within the GaN band gap. Because of the low screening in GaN, the potential barrier at the junction is strongly affected by the structural arrangement of the first metal layer at the interface. This leads to quite large variations of the Schottky barrier height as a function of the metal, in contrast with the behavior of GaAs/metal interfaces.

New Insight Concerning Primordial Lithium Production

Abstract:To constrain the universe before recombination (380000 years after the Big Bang), we mostly rely on the measurements of the primordial abundances that indicate the first insight into the thermal history of the universe. The first production of the light elements is obtained by the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). The production of the elements deuterium, helium-3, and helium-4 during BBN matches well the observations; however, the production of lithium (Lithium-7) based on the Standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (SBBN) is found to be higher by about a factor of three than the observed abundance from metal-poor halo stars. This so-called "Cosmological Lithium Problem" is still elusive and needs to be resolved. One important attempt to resolve this problem is to invoke a non-standard description of the SBBN to decrease the lithium abundance. In our previous work, we encountered a problem that the decrease in the Lithium-7 abundance requires an increase in the deuterium abundance to maximum values that are not accepted by observations. In the present work, a decrease in the lithium abundance could be achieved without maximizing the deuterium abundance by modifying the time-temperature relation in the range (0.43-0.91) GK during the nucleosynthesis process. This range is crucial to reducing the strong correlation between lithium and deuterium production. The main conclusion of the present work is that Lithium-7 abundance in the atmospheres of metal-poor stars cannot be analyzed without considering possible modifications to the primordial nucleosynthesis.

Lithium abundances for 185 main-sequence stars - Galactic evolution and stellar depletion of lithium

Abstract:We present a survey of lithium abundances in 185 main-sequence field stars with 5600 less than or similar to T-eff less than or similar to 6600 K and -1.4 less than or similar to [Fe/H] less than or similar to +0.2 based on new measurements of the equivalent width of the lambda 6708 Li I line in high-resolution spectra of 130 stars and a reanalysis of data for 55 stars from Lambert et al. (1991). The survey takes advantage of improved photometric and spectroscopic determinations of effective temperature and metallicity as well as mass and age derived from Hipparcos absolute magnitudes, offering an opportunity to investigate the behaviour of Li as a function of these parameters. An interesting result from this study is the presence of a large gap in the log epsilon (Li) T-eff plane, which distinguishes "Li-dip" stars like those first identified in the Hyades cluster by Boesgaard & Tripicco (1986) from other stars with a much higher Li abundance. The Li-dip stars concentrate on a certain mass, which decreases with metallicity from about 1.4 M-. at solar metallicity to 1.1 M-. at [Fe/H] similar or equal to -1.0. Excluding the Li-dip stars and a small group of lower mass stars with T-eff < 5900 K and log <epsilon>(Li) < 1.5, the remaining stars, when divided into four metallicity groups, may show a correlation between Li abundance and stellar mass. The dispersion around the log <epsilon>(Li)-mass relation is about 0.2 dex below [Fe/H] similar or equal to -0.4 and 0.3 dex above this metallicity, which cannot be explained by observational errors or differences in metallicity. Furthermore, there is no correlation between the residuals of the log epsilon (Li)-mass relations and stellar age, which ranges from 1.5 Gyr to about 15 Gyr. This suggests that Li depletion occurs early in stellar life and that parameters other than stellar mass and metallicity affect the degree of depletion, e.g. initial rotation velocity and/or the rate of angular momentum loss. It cannot be excluded, however, that a cosmic scatter of the Li abundance in the Galaxy at a given metallicity contributes to the dispersion in Li abundance. These problems make it difficult to determine the Galactic evolution of Li from the data, but a comparison of the upper envelope of the distribution of stars in the log epsilon (Li) [Fe/H] plane with recent Galactic evolutionary models by Romano et al. (1999) suggests that novae are a major source for the Li production in the Galactic disk; their occurrence seems to be the explanation for the steep increase of Li abundance at [Fe/H] similar or equal to -0.4.

Abstract:Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) theory, together with the precise WMAP cosmic baryon density, makes tight predictions for the abundances of the lightest elements. Deuterium and 4He measurements agree well with expectations, but 7Li observations lie a factor 3-4 below the BBN+WMAP prediction. This 4-5\sigma\ mismatch constitutes the cosmic "lithium problem," with disparate solutions possible. (1) Astrophysical systematics in the observations could exist but are increasingly constrained. (2) Nuclear physics experiments provide a wealth of well-measured cross-section data, but 7Be destruction could be enhanced by unknown or poorly-measured resonances, such as 7Be + 3He -> 10C^* -> p + 9B. (3) Physics beyond the Standard Model can alter the 7Li abundance, though D and 4He must remain unperturbed; we discuss such scenarios, highlighting decaying Supersymmetric particles and time-varying fundamental constants. Present and planned experiments could reveal which (if any) of these is the solution to the problem.

Properties of an αs-casein-rich casein fraction: influence of dialysis on surface properties, miscibility, and micelle formation.

Abstract:In this study, the surface tension, miscibility, and particle size distribution of a solution containing an αs-casein (CN)-rich CN fraction (54 wt % αs-CN, 32 wt % β-CN, and 15 wt % κ-CN) were determined at pH 6.6. The nondialyzed CN fraction was compared with a dialyzed one. In the nondialyzed sample, every charge on the protein was compensated by 0.3 charges coming from counterions, whereas in the dialyzed sample, only 0.2 charges could be assigned to each charge on the protein. This relation was determined by calculating the charges at the proteins, taking the measured mineral content into account. The surface tension was measured as a function of the protein concentration by the du Noüy ring method at room temperature. Results indicated alterations in the surface properties after reduction of counterions. The equilibrium surface tension above the critical micelle concentration increased from 40.1×10(-3) to 45×10(-3) N/m, the critical micelle concentration increased from 0.9×10(-4) to 2×10(-3) mol/L, and the minimal area occupied per molecule at the surface increased from 2.4×10(-18) to 4.6×10(-18) m(2). Cloud points were determined by measuring the absorbance of CN solutions as a function of the temperature. The cloud points were found to be concentration dependent and had a minimum at 0.2 wt % at 34°C for nondialyzed CN and at 0.25 wt % at 28°C for dialyzed CN, again demonstrating the influence of counterion reduction. Below the cloud point, a micellar phase was found to exist. The hydrodynamic diameter of the micelles were characterized by dynamic light scattering in both auto- and cross-correlation mode. However, no influence of reduction in counterions could be observed, possibly due to the fact that dynamic light scattering is not a suitable method for this type of system. The presence of self-assembled structures was verified by freeze-fracture electron microscopy. The observed differences between dialyzed and nondialyzed samples were explained by changes in the counterion cloud surrounding the proteins. Consequently, the electrostatic interactions between as well as within the CN are altered by dialysis, which, in turn, affects the behavior at the surface as well as the properties in the solution.
Atomic diffusion in metal-poor stars: II. Predictions for the Spite plateau

Abstract:We have computed a grid of up-to-date stellar evolutionary models including atomic diffusion, in order to study the evolution with time of the surface Li abundance in low-mass metal-poor stars. We discuss in detail the dependence of the surface Li evolution on the initial metallicity and stellar mass, and compare the abundances obtained from our models with the available Li measurements in Pop II stars. While it is widely accepted that the existence of the Spite Li-plateau for these stars is a strong evidence that diffusion is inhibited, we show that, when taking into account observational errors, uncertainties in the Li abundance determinations, in the effective temperature scale, and in particular the size of the observed samples of stars, the Spite plateau and the Li abundances in subgiant branch stars can be reproduced also by models including fully efficient diffusion, provided that the most metal-poor field halo objects are between 13.5 and 14 Gyr old. We provide the value of the minimum number of plateau stars to observe, for discriminating between efficient or inhibited diffusion. From our models with diffusion we derive that the average Li abundance along the Spite plateau is about a factor of 2 lower than the primordial one. As a consequence, the derived primordial Li abundance is consistent with a high helium and low deuterium Big Bang Nucleosynthesis; this implies a high cosmological baryon density as inferred from the analyses of the cosmic microwave background.

A detailed study of Lithium in 107 CHEPS dwarf stars

Abstract:We report results from lithium abundance determinations using high resolution spectral analysis of the 107 metal-rich stars from the Calan-Hertfordshire Extrasolar Planet Search programme. We set out to understand the lithium distribution of the population of stars taken from this survey. The lithium abundance with account NLTE effects was determined from the fits to the Li I 6708 Å~resonance doublet profiles in the observed spectra. We find that a) fast rotators tend to have higher lithium abundances, b) $\log$ N(Li) is higher in more massive/hot stars, c) $\log$ N(Li) is higher in less evolved stars, i.e. stars of lower \logg, d) stars with the metallicities $>$0.25~dex do not show the presence of lithium lines in their spectra, e) most of our planet hosts rotate slower, f) our estimate of a lower limit of lithium isotopic ratio is \Li $>$10 in the atmospheres of two SWP and two non-SWP stars. Measurable lithium abundances were found in the atmospheres of 45 stars located at distances of 20-170 pc from the Sun, for the other 62 stars the upper limits of log N(Li) were computed. We found well defined dependences of lithium abundances on \Teff, \vsini, and less pronounced for the \logg. In case of \vsini we see two sequences of stars: with measurable lithium and with the upper limit of log N(Li). About 10\% of our targets are known to host planets. Only two SWP have notable lithium abundances, so we found a lower proportion of stars with detectable Li among known planet hosts than among stars without planets. However, given the small sample size of our planet-host sample, our analysis does not show any statistically significant differences in the lithium abundance between SWP and stars without known planets.

New Keck Observations of Lithium in Very Metal-poor Stars

Abstract:Lithium abundances have been determined in more than 100 metal-poor halo stars both in the field and in clusters. From these data we find trends of Li with both temperature and metallicity and a real dispersion in Li abundances in the Spite Li plateau. We attribute this dispersion primarily to Li depletion (presumably due to extra mixing induced by stellar rotation) and to Galactic chemical evolution. We derive a primordial Li of 2.44 $\pm$0.18 for A(Li)$_p$ = log N(Li/H) + 12.00. This agrees with the Li abundances predicted by the $WMAP$ results. For stars cooler than the Li plateau we have evidence that Li depletion sets in at hotter temperatures for the higher metallicity stars than for the low-metal stars. This is the opposite sense of predictions from stellar models. The smooth transition of the Li content from the Li plateau stars to the cool stars adds weight to the inference of Li depletion in the plateau stars.

Abstract:We derive atmospheric parameters and lithium abundances for 671 stars and include our measurements in a literature compilation of 1381 dwarf and subgiant stars. First, a "lithium desert" in the effective temperature (Teff) versus lithium abundance (A_Li) plane is observed such that no stars with Teff~6075 K and A_Li~1.8 are found. We speculate that most of the stars on the low A_Li side of the desert have experienced a short-lived period of severe surface lithium destruction as main-sequence or subgiant stars. Next, we search for differences in the lithium content of thin-disk and thick-disk stars, but we find that internal processes have erased from the stellar photospheres their possibly different histories of lithium enrichment. Nevertheless, we note that the maximum lithium abundance of thick-disk stars is nearly constant from [Fe/H]=-1.0 to -0.1, at a value that is similar to that measured in very metal-poor halo stars (A_Li~2.2). Finally, differences in the lithium abundance distribution of known planet-host stars relative to otherwise ordinary stars appear when restricting the samples to narrow ranges of Teff or mass, but they are fully explained by age and metallicity biases. We confirm the lack of a connection between low lithium abundance and planets. However, we find that no low A_Li planet-hosts are found in the desert Teff window. Provided that subtle sample biases are not responsible for this observation, this suggests that the presence of gas giant planets inhibit the mechanism responsible for the lithium desert.

7Li in Metal-Poor Stars: The Spread of the Li Plateau

Abstract:A highly homogeneous study of 23 halo field dwarf stars has achieved a Li abundance accuracy of 0.033 dex per star. The work shows that the intrinsic spread of the Li abundances of these stars at a given metallicity is <0.02 dex, and consistent with zero. That is, the Spite Li plateau for halo field dwarfs is incredibly thin. The thinness rules out depletion by more than 0.1 dex by a rotational-induced extra-mixing mechanism. Despite the thinness of the plateau, an increase of Li with [Fe/H] is seen, interpreted as evidence of Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) of Li, primarily due to Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) spallation reactions in the era of halo formation. The rate of Li evolution is concordant with: (1) observations of spallative 6Li in halo dwarfs; (2) GCE models; and (3) data on Li in higher metallicity halo stars. New data have also revealed four new ultra-Li-deficient halo dwarfs, doubling the number known. Based on their propensity to cluster at the halo main sequence turnoff and also to exist redward of the turnoff, we hypothesise that they are the products of binary mergers that ultimately will become blue stragglers. We explain their low Li abundances by normal pre-main-sequence (and possibly main-sequence) destruction in the low mass stars prior to their merging. If this explanation is correct, then such stars need no longer be considered an embarrassment to the existence of negligible Li destruction in the majority of field halo dwarfs.

Abstract:In the multiple population framework, a number of studies have been accomplished in order to explore the behaviour of lithium with proton-capture element abundances (e.g., Na, O, Al) in globular cluster stars. Lithium offers perhaps one of the most severe constraints on the stellar source of internal pollution in these complex systems. Given its vulnerability, we expect that material processed via the hot H-burning, re-cycled in the formation of the subsequent generation(s), is free of Li. However, Nature breaks our expectations. In this contribution, we will review the current status of this field, by examining the controversial, surprising results and implications.
