Abstract:Propagation of radio waves in the ultrarelativistic magnetized electron-positron plasma of pulsar magnetosphere is considered. Polarization state of the original natural waves is found to vary markedly on account of the wave mode coupling and cyclotron absorption. The change is most pronounced when the regions of mode coupling and cyclotron resonance approximately coincide. In cases when the wave mode coupling occurs above and below the resonance region, the resultant polarization appears essentially distinct. The main result of the paper is that in the former case the polarization modes become non-orthogonal. The analytical treatment of the equations of polarization transfer is accompanied by the numerical calculations. The observational consequences of polarization evolution in pulsar plasma are discussed as well.

Abstract:Frequency dependence of pulsar linear polarization is investigated by simulations of emission and propagation processes. Linearly polarized waves are generated through curvature radiation by relativistic particles streaming along curved magnetic field lines, which have ordinary mode (O-mode) and extra-ordinary mode (X-mode) components. As emitted waves propagate outwards, two mode components are separated due to re- fraction of the O mode, and their polarization states are also modified. According to the radius to frequency mapping, low frequency emission is generated from higher magnetosphere, where significant rotation effect leads the X and O modes to be sepa- rated. Hence, the low frequency radiation has a large fraction of linear polarization. As the frequency increases, emission is generated from lower heights, where the rotation effect becomes weaker and the distribution regions of two modes are more overlapped. Hence, more significant depolarization appears for emission at higher frequencies. In addition, refraction effect of the O mode becomes serious in very deep magnetosphere, which bends the O mode emission towards outer parts of a pulsar beam and also causes the separation of mode distribution regions and hence the fractional linear polariza- tion increasing with frequency. If emission of different frequencies is generated from a region of the same height, serious O mode refraction can result in the decrease of both profile width and fractional linear polarization. The observed frequency dependence of linear polarization for some pulsars can be naturally explained within the scope of our scenario.

On the Circular Polarization of Repeating Fast Radio Bursts

Abstract:Fast spinning (e.g., sub-second) neutron star with ultra-strong magnetic fields (or so-called magnetar) is one of the promising origins of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs). Here we discuss circularly polarized emissions produced by propagation effects in the magnetosphere of fast spinning magnetars. We argue that the polarization-limiting region is well beyond the light cylinder, suggesting that wave mode coupling effects are unlikely to produce strong circular polarization for fast spinning magnetars. Cyclotron absorption could be significant if the secondary plasma density is high. However, high degrees of circular polarization can only be produced with large asymmetries in electrons and positrons. We draw attention to the non-detection of circular polarization in current observations of known repeating FRBs. We suggest that the circular polarization of FRBs could provide key information on their origins and help distinguish different radiation mechanisms.
Statistics of the individual-pulse polarization based on propagation effects in pulsar magnetosphere

Abstract:Pulsar radio emission is modelled as a sum of two completely polarized non-orthogonal modes with the randomly varying Stokes parameters and intensity ratio. The modes are the result of polarization evolution of the original natural waves in the hot magnetized weakly inhomogeneous plasma of pulsar magnetosphere. In the course of wave mode coupling, the linearly polarized natural waves acquire purely orthogonal elliptical polarizations. Further on, as the waves pass through the cyclotron resonance, they become non-orthogonal. The pulse-to-pulse fluctuations of the final polarization characteristics and the intensity ratio of the modes are attributed to the temporal fluctuations in the plasma flow. The model suggested allows to reproduce the basic features of the one-dimensional distributions of the individual-pulse polarization characteristics. Besides that, propagation origin of pulsar polarization implies a certain correlation between the mode ellipticity and position angle. On a qualitative level, for different sets of parameters, the expected correlations appear compatible with the observed ones. Further theoretical studies are necessary to establish the quantitative correspondence of the model to the observational results and to develop a technique of diagnostics of pulsar plasma on this basis.

Polarization of Fast Radio Bursts: radiation mechanisms and propagation effects

Abstract:Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are observed to be highly polarized. Most have high linear polarization but a small fraction show significant circular polarization. We systematically investigate a variety of polarization mechanisms of FRBs within the magnetar theoretical framework considering two emission sites inside and outside the magnetosphere. For each site, we discuss both intrinsic radiation mechanisms and propagation effects. Inside the magnetosphere, we investigate the polarization properties of both coherent curvature radiation and inverse Compton scattering by charged bunches and conclude that both mechanisms produce 100\% linear polarization at an on-axis geometry but can produce circular polarization if the viewing angle is off axis. The lack of circular polarization for the majority of bursts requires that the bunches have a large transverse dimension size. Resonant cyclotron absorption within magnetosphere may produce high circular polarization if electrons and positrons have an asymmetric Lorentz factor distribution. Outside the magnetosphere, the synchrotron maser emission mechanism in general produces highly linearly polarized emission. Circular polarization would appear at off-beam angles but the flux is greatly degraded and such bursts are not detectable at cosmological distances. Synchrotron absorption in a nebula with ordered magnetic field may reduce the circular polarization degree. Cyclotron absorption in a strongly magnetized medium may generate significant circular polarization. Faraday conversion in a medium with field reversal can convert one polarization mode to another. The two absorption processes require stringent physical conditions. Significant Faraday conversion may be realized in a magnetized dense environment involving binary systems or supernova remnants.

Abstract:In inhomogeneous optically thick synchrotron sources a substantial part of the electron population at low energies can be hidden by self-absorption and overpowered by high energy electrons in optically thin emission. These invisible electrons produce Faraday rotation and conversion, leaving their footprints in the linear and circular polarized radiation of the source. An important factor is also the magnetic field structure, which can be characterized in most cases by a global magnetic field and a turbulent component. We present the basic radiative transfer coefficients for polarized synchrotron radiation and apply them to the standard jet model for relativistic radio jets. The model can successfully explain the unusual circular and linear polarization of the Galactic Centre radio source Sgr A* and its sibling M 81*. It also can account for the circular polarization found in jets of more luminous quasars and X-ray binaries. The high ratio of circular to linear polarization requires the presence of a significant fraction of hidden matter and low-energy electrons in these jets. The stable handedness of circular polarization requires stable global magnetic field components with non-vanishing magnetic flux along the jet, while the low degree of total polarization implies also a significant turbulent field. The most favoured magnetic field configuration is that of a helix, while a purely toroidal field is unable to produce significant circular polarization. If connected to the magnetosphere of the black hole, the circular polarization and the jet direction determine the magnetic poles of the system which is stable over long periods of time. This may also have implications for possible magnetic field configurations in accretion flows.

Abstract:Radio emission from magnetars provides a unique probe of the relativistic,magnetized plasma within the near-field environment of these ultra-magneticneutron stars. The transmitted waves can undergo birefringent and dispersivepropagation effects that result in frequency-dependent conversions of linear tocircularly polarized radiation and vice-versa, thus necessitatingclassification when relating the measured polarization to the intrinsicproperties of neutron star and fast radio burst (FRB) emission sites. We reportthe detection of such behavior in 0.7-4 GHz observations of the P = 5.54 sradio magnetar XTE J1810-197 following its 2018 outburst. The phenomenon isrestricted to a narrow range of pulse phase centered around the magneticmeridian. Its temporal evolution is closely coupled to large-scale variationsin magnetic topology that originate from either plastic motion of an activeregion on the magnetar surface or free precession of the neutron star crust.Our model of the effect deviates from simple theoretical expectations for radiowaves propagating through a magnetized plasma. Birefringent self-couplingbetween the transmitted wave modes, line-of-sight variations in the magneticfield direction and differences in particle charge or energy distributionsabove the magnetic pole are explored as possible explanations. We discusspotential links between the immediate magneto-ionic environments of magnetarsand those of FRB progenitors.
Faraday Rotation in Pulsar Magnetosphere

Abstract:The magnetosphere of a pulsar is composed of relativistic plasmas streaming along the magnetic field lines and corotating with the pulsar. We study the intrinsic Faraday rotation in the pulsar magnetosphere by critically examining the wave modes and the variations of polarization properties for the circularly polarized natural modes under various assumptions about the magnetosphere plasma properties. Since it is difficult to describe analytically the Faraday rotation effect in such a plasma, we use numerical integrations to study the wave propagation effects in the corotating magnetosphere. Faraday rotation effect is identified among other propagation effects, such as wave mode coupling and the cyclotron absorption. In a highly symmetrical electron-positron pair plasma, the Faraday rotation effect is found to be negligible. Only for asymmetrical plasmas, such as the electron-ion streaming plasma, can the Faraday rotation effect become significant, and the Faraday rotation angle is found to be approximately proportional to $\lambda^{0.5}$ instead of the usual $\lambda^2$-law. For such electrons-ion plasma of pulsar magnetosphere, the induced rotation measure becomes larger at higher frequencies, and should have opposite signs for the emissions from opposite magnetic poles.

Abstract:I discuss the transfer of polarized synchrotron radiation in relativistic jets. I argue that the main mechanism responsible for the circular polarization properties of compact synchrotron sources is likely to be Faraday conversion and that, contrary to common expectation, a significant rate of Faraday rotation does not necessarily imply strong depolarization. The long-term persistence of the sign of circular polarization, observed in some sources, is most likely due to a small net magnetic flux generated in the central engine, carried along the jet axis and superimposed on a highly turbulent magnetic field. I show that the mean levels of circular and linear polarizations depend on the number of field reversals along the line of sight and that the gradient in Faraday rotation across turbulent regions can lead to`correlation depolarization'. The model is potentially applicable to a wide range of synchrotron sources. In particular, I demonstrate how the model can naturally explain the excess of circular over linear polarization in the Galactic Center (SgrA*) and the low-luminosity AGN M81*.

Abstract:In a cycle of papers, starting with the present one, a fundamental possibility of the polarization sounding of a pulsar magnetosphere using pulsar self-radiation as a test signal will be considered. The main idea of such a sounding is based on the fact that in some models of pulsar magnetosphere the emission frequency depends on the height of its origin above the pulsar surface. For this purpose it is needed to study the dependence of such a parameter as the rotation measure on frequency and pulse phase. We expect that it is possible to register the rotation measure dependence on the central observing frequency and/or the pulse phase during the observations at widely spaced frequencies in the same conditions. The reliable registration of this dependence will result in resolving of the pulsar magnetosphere in depth. It is preferably to carry out the polarization researches in the observational mode of the individual pulses. In this part of the work the model of polarized pulsed radio emission and the model of weakly anisotropic propagation medium are considered. In future articles we will show how to determine the polarization parameters of pulsar radiation with the highest precision in presence of different types of recorders on the receiving side. The specifics of polarization observations at decameter wavelengths will be considered. The algorithms for solving the inverse problem for different types of receivers and the variable conductivity of the underlying surface will be developed.

Abstract:The polarization position angles (PPA) of time samples with high linear polarization often show two parallel tracks across the pulsar profile that follow the rotating vector model (RVM). This feature supports coherent curvature radiation (CCR) as the underlying mechanism of radio emission from pulsars, where the parallel tracks of the PPA represent the orthogonal extraordinary (X) and ordinary (O) eigenmodes of strongly magnetized pair plasma. However, the frequency evolution of these high linearly polarized signals remains unexplored. In this work, we explore the flux density spectral nature of high linearly polarized signals by studying the emission from PSR J0332+5434 over a frequency range between 300 and 750 MHz, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. The pulsar average profile comprises a central core and a pair of conal components. We find the high linearly polarized time samples to be broadband in nature, and in many cases, they resemble a narrow spiky feature in the conal regions. These spiky features are localized within a narrow pulse longitude over the entire frequency range, and their spectral shapes sometimes resemble an inverted parabolic shape. In all such cases, the PPA is exclusively along one of the orthogonal RVM tracks, likely corresponding to the X-mode. The inverted spectral shape can, in principle, be explained if the high linearly polarized emission in these time samples is formed due to the incoherent addition of CCR from a large number of charged solitons (charge bunches) exciting the X-mode.

Criteria for the observability of scintillation-induced circular polarization are identified. Abstract:The radio polarization properties of the pulsar population are only superficially captured by the conventional picture of pulsar radio emission. We study the broadband polarization of 271 young radio pulsars, focusing particularly on circular polarization, using high quality observations made with the Ultra-Wideband Low receiver on Murriyang, the Parkes radio telescope. We seek to encapsulate polarization behaviour on a population scale by defining broad categories for frequency- and phase-dependent polarization evolution, studying the co-occurrences of these categorizations and comparing them with average polarization measurements and spin-down energy ($\dot{E}$). This work shows that deviations of the linear polarization position angle (PA) from the rotating vector model (RVM) are linked to the presence of circular polarization features and to frequency evolution of the polarization. Polarization fraction, circular polarization contribution and profile complexity all evolve with $\dot{E}$ across the population, with the profiles of high-$\dot{E}$ pulsars being simple and highly linearly polarized. The relationship between polarization fraction and circular contribution is also seen to evolve such that highly polarized profiles show less variation in circular contribution with frequency than less strongly polarized profiles. This evolution is seen both across the population and across frequency for individual sources. Understanding pulsar radio polarization requires detailed study of individual sources and collective understanding of population-level trends. For the former, we provide visualizations of their phase- and frequency-resolved polarization parameters. For the latter, we have highlighted the importance of including the impact of circular polarization and of $\dot{E}$.
Circular polarization in pulsar integrated profiles

Abstract:We present a systematic study of the circular polarization in pulsar integrated profiles, based on published polarization data. For core components, we find no significant correlation between the sense-change of circular polarization and the sense of linear position angle variation. Circular polarization is not restricted to core components and, in some cases, reversals of circular polarization sense are observed across the conal emission. In conal double profiles, the sense of circular polarization is found to be correlated with the sense of position-angle variation. Pulsars with a high degree of linear polarization often have one hand of circular polarization across the whole profile. For most pulsars, the sign of circular polarization is the same at 50-cm and 20-cm wavelength, and the degree of polarization is similar, albeit with a wide scatter. However, at least two cases of frequency-dependent sign reversals are known. This diverse behaviour may require more than one mechanism to generate circular polarization.

Abstract:We have observed 123 pulsars with periods longer than 0.1 seconds in the Meterwavelength Single-pulse Polarimetric Emission Survey. In this work a detailed study of polarization behaviour of these pulsars have been carried out. We were able to fit the rotating vector model to the polarization position angle sweeps in 68 pulsars, and in 34 pulsars the emission heights could be measured. In all cases the radio emission was constrained to arise below 10\% of the light cylinder radius. In pulsars with low spindown energy loss, $\dot{E}<10^{34}$ ergs s$^{-1}$, we found the mean fractional linear polarization of the individual times samples in single pulses to be around 0.57 (57\%) which is significantly larger than the fractional linear polarization of 0.29 (29\%) obtained from the average profiles. On the other hand the mean fractional circular polarization of the individual time samples in single pulses is around 0.08 (8\%), similar to the measurements from the average profiles. To explain the observed polarization features, we invoke the partially screened vacuum gap model of pulsars, where dense spark associated plasma clouds exist with high pair plasma multiplicity, with significant decrease of density in the regions between the clouds, that are dominated by iron ions. The coherent radio emission is excited by curvature radiation from charge bunches in these dense plasma clouds and escape as linearly polarized waves near cloud boundaries. We suggest that the circular polarization arises due to propagation of waves in the low pair multiplicity, ion dominated inter-cloud regions.

The propagation-induced circular polarization of fast radio bursts in relativistic plasma

Abstract:Although the physical origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) remains unknown, magnetars are the most likely candidates. The polarization properties of FRBs offer crucial insights into their origins and radiation mechanisms. Significant circular polarization (CP) has been observed in some FRBs. CP may result from intrinsic radiation or propagation effects, both within and outside the magnetosphere. Recent observations indicate that polarization properties of FRB 20201124A can change over short timescales (about tens of milliseconds), challenging models that attribute CP to out-of-magnetosphere emission and propagation. Additionally, some magnetospheric radiation models predict that bursts with high CP produced by off-axis emission will be systematically fainter, which contradicts the observations. We propose that CP arises from magnetospheric propagation effects caused by relativistic plasma. We identify the conditions under which high CP occurs, finding it to be rare. Moreover, our model accounts for the more commonly observed low CP and the varying handedness of CP.

Radio Pulses Through a Magnetized Relativistic Pair Plasma Flow

Abstract:Radio pulses emitted from a pulsar magnetosphere travel across the light cylinder and through a magnetized relativistic pulsar wind composed mainly of an electron-positron (e∓) pair plasma embedded in a spiral magnetic field. Besides the Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance and wind advections of hybrid oscillations or low-frequency waves, we identify two cutoff frequencies at ωpe and ~(ω + ω/γ2)1/2 for radio waves of two orthogonal polarizations perpendicular and parallel to the projected spin axis in the sky plane, where ωpe is the proper e∓ pair plasma frequency, ωc is the relativistic Larmor frequency, and γ is the Lorentz factor of e∓ bulk flow. Radio pulse spectra of most pulsars show low-frequency cutoffs at νcut ≲ 100 MHz. For (ω + ω/γ2)1/2 < 2πνcut, one may bracket the e∓ particle loss rate of a pulsar wind. If for some cases, alternative to the wisdom that all such spectral cutoffs are intrinsic to the emission mechanism(s) near a pulsar, the magnetized e∓ pair plasma of a pulsar wind actually causes the low-frequency cutoffs of radio pulse spectra, then spectral polarization studies of the two different frequency cutoffs can yield ωpe and ωc/γ. Together with the observed rates of pulsar spin and spin-down, one may derive key properties of a pulsar wind, including the e∓ particle loss rate.

Abstract:Radiation of X-ray bursts and of accretion shocks in weakly magnetized neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries is produced in plane-parallel atmospheres dominated by electron scattering. We first discuss polarization produced by single (non-magnetic) Compton scattering, in particular the depolarizing effect of high electron temperature, and then the polarization due to multiply electron scattering in a slab. We further predict the X-ray pulse profiles and polarization properties of nuclear- and accretion-powered millisecond pulsars. We introduce a relativistic rotation vector model, which includes the effect of rotation of polarization plane due to the rapid motion of the hot spot as well as the light bending. Future observations of the X-ray polarization will provide a valuable tool to test the geometry of the emission region in pulsars and its physical characteristics.

Abstract:It is shown that induced Raman scattering of electromagnetic waves in the strongly magnetized electron-positron plasma of pulsar magnetosphere may be important for wave propagation and as an effective saturation mechanism for electromagnetic instabilities. The frequencies, at which strong Raman scattering occurs in the outer parts of magnetosphere, fall into the observed radio band. The typical threshold intensities for the strong Raman scattering are of the order of the observed intensities, implying that pulsar magnetosphere may be optically thick to Raman scattering of electromagnetic waves.
