Abstract:Green-Kubo and Einstein expressions for the transport coefficients of a fluid in a nonequilibrium steady state can be derived using the Fluctuation Theorem and by assuming the probability distribution of the time-averaged dissipative flux is Gaussian. These expressions are consistent with those obtained using linear response theory and are valid in the linear regime. It is shown that these expressions are however, not valid in the nonlinear regime where the fluid is driven far from equilibrium. We advance an argument for why these expression are only valid in the linear response, zero field limit.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is whether the Green-Kubo relations and Einstein expressions remain valid in the nonlinear response regime far from equilibrium in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Specifically, the authors explore the validity of the Green-Kubo relations and Einstein expressions derived from the Fluctuation Theorem under nonequilibrium steady-state conditions in the nonlinear response regime. ### Main Issues: 1. **Validity of Green-Kubo relations and Einstein expressions**: Do these relations still hold in the nonlinear response regime? 2. **Application of the Fluctuation Theorem**: How to use the Fluctuation Theorem to derive these relations and verify their validity in the nonlinear regime? 3. **Numerical simulation results**: Validate the performance of these relations in the nonlinear regime through numerical simulations. ### Background and Motivation: - **Green-Kubo relations**: These relations are typically used to calculate transport coefficients of fluids near equilibrium, such as viscosity and thermal conductivity. - **Einstein expressions**: These expressions are also used to describe transport coefficients, especially in the zero-field limit. - **Fluctuation Theorem**: This theorem describes the probability distribution characteristics of time-averaged dissipative fluxes in nonequilibrium steady states. ### Main Contributions of the Paper: - **Theoretical derivation**: The authors derive generalized Einstein and Green-Kubo relations using the Fluctuation Theorem by assuming that the distribution of time-averaged dissipative fluxes is Gaussian. - **Numerical simulations**: Validate the performance of these relations in the nonlinear response regime through nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. - **Conclusion**: It is found that these relations do not hold in the nonlinear response regime because the distribution of time-averaged dissipative fluxes is not Gaussian. ### Key Findings: - **Linear response regime**: In the zero-field limit, the relations derived from the Fluctuation Theorem are consistent with the results of linear response theory. - **Nonlinear response regime**: In the nonlinear response regime far from equilibrium, the distribution of time-averaged dissipative fluxes deviates from a Gaussian distribution, leading to the failure of the Green-Kubo relations and Einstein expressions. ### Significance: - **Theoretical foundation**: Clarifies the application scope of the Fluctuation Theorem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. - **Practical application**: Provides important theoretical guidance for studying nonequilibrium systems, especially when considering the impact of nonlinear responses in the design and optimization of material properties. Overall, this paper reveals the limitations of the Green-Kubo relations and Einstein expressions in the nonlinear response regime through an in-depth exploration of the Fluctuation Theorem and numerical simulations, providing new insights into the study of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics.
