Abstract:Cosmic rays are energetic nuclei and elementary particles that originate from stars and intergalactic events. The interaction of these particles with the upper atmosphere produces a range of secondary particles that reach the surface of the earth, of which muons are the most prominent. With enough energy, muons can travel up to a few kilometers beneath the surface of the earth before being stopped completely. The terrestrial muon flux profile and associated zenith angle can be utilized to determine geological characteristics of a location without having to use conventional methods. This work intends to use a low-power plastic scintillator-based muon detection system for this non-destructive geological assay methodology. 4 custom designed plastic scintillation panels are used to realize two orthogonal detection planes. Simultaneous triggers between detectors from two planes indicate a coincidence event which is recorded using a data acquisition system from FNAL. In order to quantify the systematic uncertainties associated with the detector, such as energy depositions and angular resolution of the detector design, a Monte Carlo simulation using Geant4 is being developed. Simulated and experimental data will drive the development and validation of a reconstruction algorithm that, upon completion, is expected to predict average overburden and rock density. Extended detector exposure to muons can be used as a means to understand changes in the surrounding environment like rock porosity. On the experimental front, the measured flux data will be used to benchmark independent and established models. Successful proof-of-concept demonstration of this technology can open doors for long term non-invasive geological monitoring. The detector design, and experimental methodology are detailed in this work.

Abstract:The MACRO experiment detected more than 300000 multiple muon events. We analysed these events to measure the distribution of the separation of underground TeV muons (decoherence function), up to a distance of 70 meters. On a subsample of very high multiplicity events, we performed two independent analyses, based on the study of the spatial structure of the bundles. Both the analyses revealed a correlation between the topology of the bundles and the dynamics of the shower development in atmosphere. These results have been used to constrain and disentangle the primary composition and the hadronic interaction models used by different shower propagation codes (HEMAS-DPM/CORSIKA).

Abstract:The first parts of the thesis recalls the main features of the large MACRO experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory. It then describes the atmospheric muons measured by the experiment and the selection criteria to obtain and analyze a large sample of cosmic muons. The time series of MACRO muons was analyzed with two complementary approaches: search for the occurrence of bursts of muon events and search for periodicities in the muon time distribution. The Scan Statistics method was used in the first case and the Lomb-Scargle spectral analysis in the second case. The two techniques complete early analyses performed with "folding" methods. It is confirmed that the seasonal variation is the dominant periodic variation, and one also confirms the solar diurnal and sidereal modulations. A separate study concerns the analysis of the energy losses of the hypothetical Nuclearites in different materials and detectors; their importance for the searches performed by the MACRO and the SLIM experiments is discussed.

Abstract:Atmospheric muons of high energy constitute the major event yield in modern deep large-volume neutrino telescopes. Examining their properties at sea level is crucial for accurately deciphering observed signals. This study involves the computation of the flux and charge ratio of the atmospheric muons with energies exceeding 100 GeV at sea level. The calculation employs the Monte Carlo code CORSIKA in conjunction with several state-of-the-art hadronic interaction models. The obtained results are compared with a set of experimental data and with other recent comparable studies.

Abstract:Atmospheric muons are the most frequently observed form of cosmic radiation. Despite this, the existence of the muon flux component produced in decays of short-lived parent particles, called prompt muon flux still awaits experimental confirmation. This contribution to the muon flux is expected to start dominating at high energies, around PeV, since many of the prompt parent particles are heavy hadrons, containing charm and strange quarks. The aim of this thesis was two-fold: to evaluate the possibility of observing the prompt muon flux and to validate the performance of the KM3NeT detectors. Direct Measurement of Neutrons Induced in Lead by Cosmic Muons at a Shallow Underground Site

Abstract:Neutron production in lead by cosmic muons has been studied with a Gadolinium doped liquid scintilla tor detector. The detector was installed next to the Muon-Induced Neutron Indirect Detection EXperiment (MINIDEX), permanently located in the Tubingen shallow underground laboratory where the mean muon energy is approximately 7 GeV. The MINIDEX plastic scintillators were used to tag muons; the neutrons were detected through neutron capture and neutron-induced nuclear recoil signals in the liquid scintil-lator detector. Results on the rates of observed neutron captures and nuclear recoils are presented and compared to predictions from GEANT4-9.6 and GEANT4-10.3. The predicted rates are significantly too low for both versions of GEANT4. For neutron capture events, the observation exceeds the predictions by factors of 1.65 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.07 (syst) and 2.58 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.11 (syst.) for GEANT4-9.6 and GEANT4-10.3, respectively. For neutron nuclear recoil events, which require neutron energies above approximately 5 MeV, the factors are even larger, 2.22 +/- 0.05(stat.) +/- 0.25 (syst.) and 3.76 +/- 0.09 (stat.) +/- 0.41 (syst.), respectively. Also presented is the first statistically significant measurement of the spectrum of neutrons induced by cosmic muons in lead between 5 and 40 MeV. It was obtained by unfolding the nuclear recoil spectrum. The observed neutron spectrum is harder than predicted by GEANT4. An investigation of the distribution of the time difference between muon tags and nuclear recoil signals confirms the validity of the unfolding procedure and shows that GEANT4 cannot properly describe the time distribution of nuclear recoil events. In general, the description of the data is worse for GEANT4-10.3 than for GEANT4-9.6. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The final results of the MACRO experiment on the search for GUT supermassive magnetic monopoles in the penetrating cosmic radiation are presented and discussed. The 90% CL upper limits are at the level of 1.5 - 2 x 10^-16 cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 for 0.0004 < beta < 1. Similar limits were obtained for nuclearites. Limits for the MM catalysis of proton decay are at 3 - 4 x 10^-16 cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-2 for 10^-4 < beta < 6 x 10^-3.

Abstract:Experiments seeking to detect radio emission stemming from neutrino interactions will soon reach sensitivities that bring a detection within reach. Since experiments like RNO-G or the future IceCube-Gen2 target more than an order of magnitude more effective volume than existing experiments, the renewed and detailed study of rare backgrounds is needed. In this paper, we study the potential background from energy losses of highly energetic atmospheric muons. Due to both limited experimental measurements and limited modeling in hadronic interaction models, the expected event rate is subject to large uncertainties. Here, we estimate rate predictions and their uncertainties for different models and instrumental parameters. We also study possible routes towards mitigation of the muon background, such as parent air shower detection, and illustrate what is needed to make the first measurement of the prompt muon flux at energies above 10 PeV.

Abstract:Muons are a fascinating probe to study nuclear properties. Muonic atoms can easily be formed by stopping negative muons inside a material. The muon is subsequently captured by the nucleus and, due to its much higher mass compared to the electron, orbits the nucleus at very small distances. During this atomic capture process the muon emits characteristic X-rays during its cascade down to the ground state. The energies of these X-rays reveal the muonic energy level scheme, from which properties like the nuclear charge radius or its quadrupole moment can be extracted. While almost all stable elements have been examined using muons, probing highly radioactive atoms has so far not been possible. The muX experiment has developed a technique based on transfer reaction inside a high pressure hydrogen/deuterium gas cell to examine targets available only in microgram quantities.

Abstract:The discrepancy between models and data on the muon content in air showers generated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays still needs to be solved. The CONEX simulation framework provides a flexible tool to assess the impact of different interaction properties and address the muon puzzle. In this work, we present the multidimensional extension of CONEX and show its performance compared to CORSIKA by discussing muon-related air-shower features for three experiments: KASCADE, IceTop, and the Pierre Auger Observatory. We also implement an effective version of the core-corona model to demonstrate the impact of the core effect, as observed at the LHC, on the muon content in air showers produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. At a primary energy of $E_0 = 10^{19}$ eV, we obtain an increase of $15\%$ to $20\%$ in the muon content.

Abstract:This paper describes an experimental search for GUT magnetic monopoles in the MACRO experiment using the nuclear track subdetector CR39. After discussing the working principle, the charge resolution and the calibration of the detector, the experimental procedure for searching for magnetic monopoles is described. Since no candidates were found, the upper flux limits obtained by the MACRO CR39 used as a "stand alone detector" for magnetic monopoles of different magnetic charges are presented.

Abstract:This article describes the Monte Carlo simulation used to interpret the measurement of the muon-induced neutron flux in the Boulby Underground Laboratory (North Yorkshire, UK), recently performed using a large scintillator veto deployed around the ZEPLIN-II WIMP detector. Version 8.2 of the GEANT4 toolkit was used after relevant benchmarking and validation of neutron production models. In the direct comparison between Monte Carlo and experimental data, we find that the simulation produces a 1.8 times higher neutron rate, which we interpret as over-production in lead by GEANT4. The dominance of this material in neutron production allows us to estimate the absolute neutron yield in lead as (1.31 +/- 0.06) x 10^(-3) neutrons/muon/(g/cm^2) for a mean muon energy of 260 GeV. Simulated nuclear recoils due to muon-induced neutrons in the ZEPLIN-II target volume (~1 year exposure) showed that, although a small rate of events is expected from this source of background in the energy range of interest for dark matter searches, no event survives an anti-coincidence cut with the veto.

Abstract:Accurate measurements of photonuclear reaction cross sections are crucial for a number of applications, including radiation shielding design, absorbed dose calculations, reactor physics and engineering, nuclear safeguard and inspection, astrophysics, and nuclear medicine. Primarily motivated by the study of the production of selected radionuclides with high-energy photon beams (mainly 225 Ac, 47 Sc, and 67 Cu), we have established a methodology for the measurement of photonuclear reaction cross sections with the microtron accelerator available at the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). The proposed methodology is based on the measurement of the produced activity with a High Purity Germanium (HPGe) spectrometer and on the knowledge of the photon fluence spectrum through Monte Carlo simulations. The data analysis is performed by applying a Bayesian fitting procedure to the experimental data and by assuming a functional trend of the cross section, in our case a Breit-Wigner function. We validated the entire methodology by measuring a well-established photonuclear cross section, namely the 197 Au( γ , n) 196 Au reaction. The results are consistent with those reported in the literature.

Abstract:Charged current single pion production (CC{pi}{sup +}) and charged current quasi-elastic scattering (CCQE) are the most abundant interaction types for neutrinos at energies around 1 GeV, a region of great interest to oscillation experiments. The cross-sections for these processes, however, are not well understood in this energy range. This dissertation presents a measurement of the ratio of CC{pi}{sup +} to CCQE cross-sections for muon neutrinos on mineral oil (CH{sub 2}) in the MiniBooNE experiment. The measurement is presented here both with and without corrections for hadronic re-interactions in the target nucleus and is given as a function of neutrino energy in the range 0.4 GeV < E{sub {nu}} < 2.4 GeV. With more than 46,000 CC{pi}{sup +} events collected in MiniBooNE, and with a fractional uncertainty of roughly 11% in the region of highest statistics, this measurement represents a dramatic improvement in statistics and precision over previous CC{pi}{sup +} and CCQE measurements.
Atmospheric muons measured with the KM3NeT detectors in comparison with updated numeric predictions

Abstract:The measurement of the flux of muons produced in cosmic ray air showers is essential for the study of primary cosmic rays. Such measurements are important in extensive air shower detectors to assess the energy spectrum and the chemical composition of the cosmic ray flux, complementary to the information provided by fluorescence detectors. Detailed simulations of the cosmic ray air showers are carried out, using codes such as CORSIKA, to estimate the muon flux at sea level. These simulations are based on the choice of hadronic interaction models, for which improvements have been implemented in the post-LHC era. In this work, a deficit in simulations that use state-of-the-art QCD models with respect to the measurement deep underwater with the KM3NeT neutrino detectors is reported. The KM3NeT/ARCA and KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino telescopes are sensitive to TeV muons originating mostly from primary cosmic rays with energies around 10 TeV. The predictions of state-of-the-art QCD models show that the deficit with respect to the data is constant in zenith angle; no dependency on the water overburden is observed. The observed deficit at a depth of several kilometres is compatible with the deficit seen in the comparison of the simulations and measurements at sea level.

Abstract:Cosmic-ray muons produce various radioisotopes when passing through material. These spallation products can be backgrounds for rare event searches such as in solar neutrino, double- β decay, and dark matter search experiments. The KamLAND-Zen experiment searches for neutrinoless double- β decay in 745 kg of xenon dissolved in liquid scintillator. The experiment includes dead-time-free electronics with a high efficiency for detecting muon-induced neutrons. The production yields of different radioisotopes are measured with a combination of delayed coincidence techniques, newly developed muon reconstruction, and xenon spallation identification methods. Abstract:The results obtained by studying the background of neutrons produced by cosmic-ray muons in underground experimental facilities intended for rare-event searches and in surrounding rock are presented. The types of this rock may include granite, sedimentary rock, gypsum, and rock salt. Neutron production and transfer were simulated using the Geant4 and SHIELD transport codes. These codes were tuned via a comparison of the results of calculations with experimental data: in particular, with data of the Artemovsk research station of the Institute for Nuclear Research (INR, Moscow, Russia), as well as via an intercomparison of results of calculations with the Geant4 and SHIELD codes. It turns out that the atomic-number dependence of the production and yield of neutrons has an irregular character and does not allow a description in terms of a universal function of the atomic number. The parameters of this dependence are different for two groups of nuclei-nuclei consisting of alpha particles and all of the remaining nuclei. Moreover, there are manifest exceptions from a power-law dependence, for example, argon. This may entail important consequences both for the existing underground experimental facilities and for those under construction. Investigation of cosmic-ray-induced neutron production in various materials is of paramount importance for the interpretation of experiments conducted at large depths under the Earth's surface.

Abstract:The mechanism of antiproton-nucleus annihilation at rest is not fully understood, despite substantial previous experimental and theoretical work. In this study we used slow extracted antiprotons from the ASACUSA apparatus at CERN to measure the charged particle multiplicities and their energy deposits from antiproton annihilations at rest on three different nuclei: carbon, molybdenum and gold. The results are compared with predictions from different models in the simulation tools Geant4 and FLUKA. A model that accounts for all the observed features is still missing, as well as measurements at low energies, to validate such models.

Cosmic Ray Induced Neutron Production in a Lead Target

Abstract:Underground experiments searching for rare events, such as interactions from dark matter, need to exhibit background as low as possible. One source of background is from cosmic ray muons and muon-induced neutron production. Presently these background are not fully understood. In this study Geant4 is used to model cosmic ray muon induced neutron multiplicity production and compare the modeling with data collected using an $^3$He instrumented Pb-target detector system. The neutron event multiplicity production is taken from the 2002 NMDS-II data sets, consisting of 6504 hrs collected at 583 m.w.e. and 1440 hrs, with the identical detector system, collected at 1166 m.w.e.. The detector consists of a 30 cm cube Pb-target surrounded by 60 $^3$He tubes. The single particle detection efficiency is 23.2\%$\pm$1.2\% calibrated using a $^{252}$Cf neutron source. The highest neutron multiplicity event, observed at 583 m.w.e. was 54 observed neutrons corresponding to $\sim$ 233 produced neutrons. The neutron multiplicity, n, distributions fit well a 2-parameter power law fit, $k\times n^{-p}$. For the Monte Carlo simulations at both depths and the data collected at both depths, all are consistent with a single slope parameter p. For the simulation at 583 m.w.e., p=2.37$\pm0.01$ and for the data collected at 583 m.w.e, p=2.36$\pm0.10$. At 1166 m.w.e., p=2.31$\pm0.01$ for the simulation, and for the data with only 6 detected events above multiplicity 5, p=$2.50 \pm 0.35$ predicted using a Maximum Likelihood Estimation method. At both depths, the power law amplitudes of the Geant4 simulations differ by a factor of 2 larger than the data sets. However, the disagreement is within the estimated systematic error of the simulations.
