Abstract:The directed bond percolation is a paradigmatic model in nonequilibrium statistical physics. It captures essential physical information on the nature of continuous phase transition between active and absorbing states. In this paper, we study this model by means of the field-theoretic formulation with a subsequent renormalization group analysis. We calculate all critical exponents needed for the quantitative description of the corresponding universality class to the third order in perturbation theory. Using dimensional regularization with minimal subtraction scheme, we carry out perturbative calculations in a formally small parameter $\varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon=4-d$ is a deviation from the upper critical dimension $d_c=4$. We use a nontrivial combination of analytical and numerical tools in order to determine ultraviolet divergent parts of Feynman diagrams.

Abstract:I construct perforated, "take-away" fractals that support short-distance power-law scaling with complex exponents for Dirac (spin-1/2) propagators. The construction relies on a fortuitous ansatz for Dirac boundary conditions at the surfaces of spherical voids in a three-dimensional embedding space, and requires that boundary conditions vary from void to void and are distributed statistically. The appropriate distribution can ensure that nonzero charges (but not dipoles, which drive nontrivial power-law scaling) induced in voids cancel out in spatial averaging.

Abstract:We propose a computational graph representation of high-order Feynman diagrams in Quantum Field Theory (QFT), applicable to any combination of spatial, temporal, momentum, and frequency domains. Utilizing the Dyson-Schwinger and parquet equations, our approach effectively organizes these diagrams into a fractal structure of tensor operations, significantly reducing computational redundancy. This approach not only streamlines the evaluation of complex diagrams but also facilitates an efficient implementation of the field-theoretic renormalization scheme, crucial for enhancing perturbative QFT calculations. Key to this advancement is the integration of Taylor-mode automatic differentiation, a key technique employed in machine learning packages to compute higher-order derivatives efficiently on computational graphs. To operationalize these concepts, we develop a Feynman diagram compiler that optimizes diagrams for various computational platforms, utilizing machine learning frameworks. Demonstrating this methodology's effectiveness, we apply it to the three-dimensional uniform electron gas problem, achieving unprecedented accuracy in calculating the quasiparticle effective mass at metal density. Our work demonstrates the synergy between QFT and machine learning, establishing a new avenue for applying AI techniques to complex quantum many-body problems.

Electrical-Resistivity of A Fractal Network - the Scattering of Extended Electronic States by Both Fractons and Phonons

Abstract:We calculate the electrical resistivity (ER) \ensuremath{\rho} of a fractal network from the view of the scattering of extended electronic states with both phonons and fractons and obtain different dependences of ER on the fractal dimensionality ${\mathit{d}}_{\mathit{f}}$, temperature T, fracton dimensionality d${\mathrm{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}}_{\mathit{f}}$, and characteristic length ${\mathit{l}}_{\mathit{c}}$, for different-order interactions and different Euclidean dimensionalities d. As to the first interaction, \ensuremath{\rho} is proportional to T at the high-T limit, as known, and \ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\sim}aT+${\mathit{bT}}_{\mathit{f}}^{3\mathit{d}\mathrm{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}}$/${\mathit{d}}_{\mathit{f}}$+d${\mathrm{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}}_{\mathit{f}}$-1 at some low-T ranges. In the second-order case, \ensuremath{\rho} is a constant at the high-T limit, which is consistent with some recent experiments. In particular, we find that before a special fractal dimensionality ${\mathit{d}}_{\mathit{f}}^{0}$, there exists a minimum in the \ensuremath{\rho}-T curve, while after it \ensuremath{\rho} is a monotonically increasing function of T. The form of the \ensuremath{\rho}-${\mathit{d}}_{\mathit{f}}$ curve also shows different characteristics when d changes from 2 to 3. Finally, we discuss the percolating network and obtain scalar laws and scalar exponents.
Feynman diagrammatics based on discrete pole representations: A path to renormalized perturbation theories

Abstract:By merging algorithmic Matsubara integration with discrete pole representations we present a procedure to generate fully analytic closed form results for impurity problems at fixed perturbation order. To demonstrate the utility of this approach we study the Bethe lattice and evaluate the second order self-energy for which reliable benchmarks exist. We show that, when evaluating diagrams on the Matsubara axis, the analytic sums of pole representations are extremely precise. We point out the absence of a numerical sign problem in the evaluation, and explore the application of the same procedure for real-frequency evaluation of diagrams. We find that real-frequency results are subject to noise that is controlled at low temperatures and can be mitigated at additional computational expense. We further demonstrate the utility of this approach by evaluating dynamical mean-field and bold diagrammatic self-consistency schemes at both second and fourth order and compare to benchmarks where available.

Abstract:We investigate a class of random graph ensembles based on the Feynman graphs of multidimensional integrals, representing statistical-mechanical partition functions. We show that the resulting ensembles of random graphs strongly resemble those defined in random graphs with hidden color (CDRG), generalizing the known relation of the Feynman graphs of simple one-dimensional integrals to random graphs with a given degree distribution.

Abstract:We investigate the concept of effective resistance in connection graphs, expanding its traditional application from undirected graphs. We propose a robust definition of effective resistance in connection graphs by focusing on the duality of Dirichlet-type and Poisson-type problems on connection graphs. Additionally, we delve into random walks, taking into account both node transitions and vector rotations. This approach introduces novel concepts of effective conductance and resistance matrices for connection graphs, capturing mean rotation matrices corresponding to random walk transitions. Thereby, it provides new theoretical insights for network analysis and optimization.

The fifty-year quest for universality in percolation theory in high dimensions

Abstract:Although well described by mean-field theory in the thermodynamic limit, scaling has long been puzzling for finite systems in high dimensions. This raised questions about the efficacy of the renormalization group and foundational concepts such as universality, finite-size scaling and hyperscaling, until recently believed not to be applicable above the upper critical dimension. Significant theoretical progress has been made resolving these issues, and tested in numerous simulational studies of spin models. This progress rests upon superlinearity of correlation length, a notion that for a long time encountered resistance but is now broadly accepted. Percolation theory brings added complications such as proliferation of interpenetrating clusters in apparent conflict with suggestions coming from random-graph asymptotics and a dearth of reliable simulational guidance. Here we report on recent theoretical progress in percolation theory in the renormalization group framework in high dimensions that accommodates superlinear correlation and renders most of the above concepts mutually compatible under different boundary conditions. Results from numerical simulations for free and periodic boundary conditions which differentiate between previously competing theories are also presented. Although still fragmentary, these Monte Carlo results support the new framework which restores the renormalization group and foundational concepts on which it rests.

Abstract:We present the lattice structure of Feynman diagram renormalization in physical QFTs from the viewpoint of Dyson-Schwinger-Equations and the core Hopf algebra of Feynman diagrams. The lattice structure encapsules the nestedness of diagrams. This structure can be used to give explicit expressions for the counterterms in zero-dimensional QFTs using the lattice-Moebius function. Different applications for the tadpole-free quotient, in which all appearing elements correspond to semimodular lattices, are discussed.

Abstract:Our first experience of dimension typically comes in the intuitive Euclidean sense: a line is one dimensional, a plane is two dimensional, and a volume is three dimensional. However, following the work of Mandelbrot, systems with a fractional dimension, "fractals," now play an important role in science. The novelty of encountering fractional dimension, and the intrinsic beauty of many fractals, has a strong appeal to students and provides a powerful teaching tool. I describe here a low-cost and convenient experimental method for observing fractal dimension, by measuring the power-law scaling of the resistance of a fractal network of resistors. The experiments are quick to perform, and the students enjoy both the construction of the network and the collaboration required to create the largest networks. Learning outcomes include analysis of resistor networks beyond the elementary series and parallel combinations, scaling laws, and an introduction to fractional dimension.

Connectedness percolation of fractal liquids

Abstract:We apply connectedness percolation theory to fractal liquids of hard particles, and make use of a Percus-Yevick liquid state theory combined with a geometric connectivity criterion. We find that in fractal dimensions the percolation threshold interpolates continuously between integer-dimensional values, and that it decreases monotonically with increasing (fractal) dimension. The influence of hard-core interactions is only significant for dimensions below three. Finally, our theory incorrectly suggests that a percolation threshold is absent below about two dimensions, which we attribute to the breakdown of the connectedness Percus-Yevick closure.

Resistance distance distribution in large sparse random graphs

Abstract:We consider an Erdos-Renyi random graph consisting of N vertices connected by randomly and independently drawing an edge between every pair of them with probability c/N so that at N->infinity one obtains a graph of finite mean degree c. In this regime, we study the distribution of resistance distances between the vertices of this graph and develop an auxiliary field representation for this quantity in the spirit of statistical field theory. Using this representation, a saddle point evaluation of the resistance distance distribution is possible at N->infinity in terms of an 1/c expansion. The leading order of this expansion captures the results of numerical simulations very well down to rather small values of c; for example, it recovers the empirical distribution at c=4 or 6 with an overlap of around 90%. At large values of c, the distribution tends to a Gaussian of mean 2/c and standard deviation sqrt{2/c^3}. At small values of c, the distribution is skewed toward larger values, as captured by our saddle point analysis, and many fine features appear in addition to the main peak, including subleading peaks that can be traced back to resistance distances between vertices of specific low degrees and the rest of the graph. We develop a more refined saddle point scheme that extracts the corresponding degree-differentiated resistance distance distributions. We then use this approach to recover analytically the most apparent of the subleading peaks that originates from vertices of degree 1. Rather intuitively, this subleading peak turns out to be a copy of the main peak, shifted by one unit of resistance distance and scaled down by the probability for a vertex to have degree 1. We comment on a possible lack of smoothness in the true N->infinity distribution suggested by the numerics.

Abstract:The study of matter fields on an ensemble of random geometries is a difficult problem still in need of new methods and ideas. We will follow a point of view inspired by probability theory techniques that relies on an expansion of the two point function as a sum over random walks. An analogous expansion for Fermions on non-Euclidean geometries is still lacking. Casiday et al. [\textit{Laplace and Dirac operators on graphs}, Linear and Multilinear Algebra (2022) 1] proposed a classical "Dirac walk" diffusing on vertices and edges of an oriented graph with a square root of the graph Laplacian. In contrast to the simple random walk, each step of the walk is given a sign depending on the orientation of the edge it goes through. In a toy model, we propose here to study the Green functions, spectrum and the spectral dimension of such "Dirac walks" on the Bethe lattice, a $d$-regular tree. The recursive structure of the graph makes the problem exactly solvable. Notably, we find that the spectrum develops a gap and that the spectral dimension of the Dirac walk matches that of the simple random walk ($d_s=1$ for $d=2$ and $d_s=3$ for $d\geq 3$).

Global sampling of Feynman's diagrams through Normalizing Flow

Abstract:Normalizing Flows (NF) are powerful generative models with increasing applications in augmenting Monte Carlo algorithms due to their high flexibility and expressiveness. In this work we explore the integration of NF in Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DMC), presenting an architecture designed to sample the intricate multidimensional space of Feynman's diagrams through dimensionality reduction. By decoupling the sampling of diagram order and interaction times, the flow focuses on one interaction at a time. This enables constructing a general diagram by employing the same unsupervised model iteratively, dressing a zero-order diagram with interactions determined by the previously sampled order. The resulting NF-augmented DMC is tested on the widely used single-site Holstein polaron model in the entire electron-phonon coupling regime. The obtained data show that the model accurately reproduces the diagram distribution reducing sample correlation and statistical error for observables such as the polaron binding energy and the interacting Green's function.

Elastic backbone defines a new transition in the percolation model

Abstract:The elastic backbone is the set of all shortest paths. We found a new phase transition at $p_{eb}$ above the classical percolation threshold at which the elastic backbone becomes dense. At this transition in $2d$ its fractal dimension is $1.750\pm 0.003$, and one obtains a novel set of critical exponents $\beta_{eb} = 0.50\pm 0.02$, $\gamma_{eb} = 1.97\pm 0.05$, and $\nu_{eb} = 2.00\pm 0.02$ fulfilling consistent critical scaling laws. Interestingly, however, the hyperscaling relation is violated. Using Binder's cumulant, we determine, with high precision, the critical probabilities $p_{eb}$ for the triangular and tilted square lattice for site and bond percolation. This transition describes a sudden rigidification as a function of density when stretching a damaged tissue.

Conductance and resistance jumps in finite-size random resistor networks

Abstract:When bonds are removed one by one and at random from a finite-size resistor network, the conductance (or resistance) does not change continuously, but rather a sequence of conductance (resistance) jumps for various sizes occurs. The larger jumps arise from those bonds which carry a relatively large current just before they are cut. The authors report on numerical simulations of these jumps of a random resistor network on the square lattice. They also give a scaling argument to account for this phenomenon, which yields the number of conductance jumps larger than Delta G scaling as ( Delta G)- lambda (G), with lambda (G) =d nu /(d nu -t), where t is the conductivity exponent and nu is the percolation correlation-length exponent. Equivalently, the number of resistance jumps greater than Delta R scales as ( Delta R)- lambda (R), with lambda (R)=d nu /(d nu +t). These predictions account for the data on a qualitative level only, however, and they discuss some possible mechanisms for the quantitative discrepancies.
Universal scaling solution for a rigidity transition: renormalization group flows near the upper critical dimension

Abstract:Rigidity transitions induced by the formation of system-spanning disordered rigid clusters, like the jamming transition, can be well-described in most physically relevant dimensions by mean-field theories. A dynamical mean-field theory commonly used to study these transitions, the coherent potential approximation (CPA), shows logarithmic corrections in $2$ dimensions. By solving the theory in arbitrary dimensions and extracting the universal scaling predictions, we show that these logarithmic corrections are a symptom of an upper critical dimension $d_{u}=2$, below which the critical exponents are modified. We recapitulate Ken Wilson's phenomenology of the $(4-\epsilon)$-dimensional Ising model, but with the upper critical dimension reduced to $2$. We interpret this using normal form theory as a transcritical bifurcation in the RG flows and extract the universal nonlinear coefficients to make explicit predictions for the behavior near $2$ dimensions. This bifurcation is driven by a variable that is dangerously irrelevant in all dimensions $d>2$ which incorporates the physics of long-wavelength phonons and low-frequency elastic dissipation. We derive universal scaling functions from the CPA sufficient to predict all linear response in randomly diluted isotropic elastic systems in all dimensions.
