Abstract:I present an observational review of the five accretion-driven millisecond X-ray pulsars currently known, focusing on the results obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. A prominent place in this review is given to the first such system discovered, SAX J1808.4-3658. Currently four outbursts have been detected from this source, three of which have been studied using RXTE. This makes this source the best studied example of all accretion-driven millisecond pulsars. Its October 2002 outburst is of particular interest because of the discovery of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations and burst oscillations during its thermonuclear X-ray bursts. The other four accreting millisecond pulsars were discovered within the last two years and only limited results have been published so far. First Results from the All-Sky Monitor on the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer

Abstract:The all-sky monitor on the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer has been monitoring the sky in the 1.5-12 keV band since late February. The instrument consists of three coded-aperture cameras that can be rotated to view different regions by a motorized drive assembly. Intensities of ~100 known sources are obtained via least-squares fits of shadow patterns to the data and compiled to form X-ray light curves. Six orbital periodicities and four long-term periodicities, all previously known, have been detected in these light curves. Searches for additional sources have also been conducted. X-ray light curves for the Crab Nebula, Cyg X-1, 4U 1705-44, GRO J1655-40, and SMC X-1 are reported. They illustrate the quality of the results and the range of observed phenomena.
Decade long RXTE monitoring observations of Be/X-ray binary pulsar EXO 2030+375

Abstract:We present a comprehensive timing and spectral studies of Be/X-ray binary pulsar EXO 2030+375 using extensive Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations from 1995 till 2011, covering numerous Type I and 2006 Type II outbursts. Pulse profiles of the pulsar were found to be strongly luminosity dependent. At low luminosity, the pulse profile consisted of a main peak and a minor peak that evolved into a broad structure at high luminosity with a significant phase shift. A narrow and sharp absorption dip, also dependent on energy and luminosity, was detected in the pulse profile. Comparison of pulse profiles showed that the features at a particular luminosity are independent of type of X-ray outbursts. This indicates that the emission geometry is solely a function of mass accretion rate. The broadband energy spectrum was described with a partial covering high energy cutoff model as well as a physical model based on thermal and bulk Comptonization in accretion column. We did not find any signature of cyclotron resonance scattering feature in the spectra obtained from all the observations. A detailed analysis of spectral parameters showed that, depending on source luminosity, the power-law photon index was distributed in three distinct regions. It suggests the phases of spectral transition from sub-critical to super-critical regimes in the pulsar as proposed theoretically. A region with constant photon index was also observed in ~(2-4) x 10^37 erg/s range, indicating critical luminosity regime in EXO 2030+375.

Abstract:We have monitored the phase of the main X-ray pulse of the Crab pulsar with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) for almost 8 years, since the start of the mission in 1996 January. The absolute time of RXTE's clock is sufficiently accurate to allow this phase to be compared directly with the radio profile. Our monitoring observations of the pulsar took place bi-weekly (during the periods when it was at least 30° from the Sun), and we correlated the data with radio timing ephemerides derived from observations made at Jodrell Bank. We have determined the phase of the X-ray main pulse for each observation with a typical error in the individual data points of 50 μs. The total ensemble is consistent with a phase that is constant over the monitoring period, with the X-ray pulse leading the radio pulse by 0.0102 ± 0.0012 periods in phase, or 344 ± 40 μs in time. The error estimate is dominated by a systematic error of 40 μs in the radio data, arising from uncertainties in the variable amount of pulse delay due to interstellar scattering and instrumental calibration. The statistical error is 0.00015 periods, or 5 μs. The separation of the main pulse and interpulse appears to be unchanging at timescales of a year or less, with an average value of 0.4001 ± 0.0002 periods. There is no apparent variation in these values with energy over the 2-30 keV range. The lag between the radio and X-ray pulses may be constant in phase (i.e., rotational in nature) or constant in time (i.e., due to a path-length difference). We are not (yet) able to distinguish between these two interpretations.
The Magnificent Seven X-ray Isolated Neutron Stars Revisited. I. Improved Timing Solutions and Pulse Profile Analysis

Abstract:We present the first systematic X-ray pulse timing analysis of the six members of the so-called "Magnificent Seven" nearby thermally-emitting isolated neutron stars (XINS) with detected pulsations. Using the extensive collection of archival XMM-Newton, Chandra, and NICER observations spanning over two decades, we obtain the first firm measurement of the spin-down rate for RX J2143.0+0654, while for the rest we improve upon previously published spin ephemerides and extend them by up to an additional decade. Five of the XINS follow steady spin-down with no indication of major anomalies in their long-term timing behavior; the notable exception is RX J0720.4-3125, for which, in addition to confirming the previously identified glitch, we detect a second spin derivative. The high quality folded X-ray pulse profiles produced with the updated timing solutions exhibit diverse and complex morphologies, as well as striking energy dependence. These peculiarities cannot be readily explained by blackbody-like isotropic emission and simple hot spot configurations, hinting at the presence of complex multi-temperature surface heat distributions and highly anisotropic radiation patterns, such as may arise from a strongly magnetized atmospheric layer.

The Future of X-ray Spectroscopy of Galactic Black Hole Binaries

Abstract:There are four major X-ray satellites currently in operation, with two more shortly to follow, and several very ambitious observatories in various stages of planning. This very rich period of X-ray observation is leading to great advances in our understanding of the accretion flow onto the black hole, although we are quickly learning (or perhaps better put, remembering) exactly how complicated this flow can be. This review was meant to assess future prospects for X-ray spectroscopy of black hole binaries; however, I first look backward to the observations and theories that helped us arrive at our current `paradigm'. I then discuss current and near-future spectroscopic studies, which increasingly (and very fruitfully) treat X-ray spectroscopy as part of a larger, intimately connected picture along with radio, optical, and gamma-ray spectroscopy. Equally importantly, and in large part thanks to the success of RXTE, there is now a strong realization that spectral-temporal correlations, even across wavelength bands, are crucial to our understanding of the physics of these systems. Going forward, we are well-poised to continue to advance our knowledge via X-ray spectroscopy, both with existing satellites that have a long lifetime ahead of them, and with the next generation of instruments. If there is any `hole' in this bright future, it is the potential loss of RXTE, with no designated follow-up mission. Studies of multi-wavelength spectral-temporal correlations will become more difficult due to the loss of two important attributes of RXTE: its fast timing capabilities and its extremely flexible scheduling which has made many of these studies possible.

Relativistic Astrophysics in Black Hole and Low-Mass Neutron Star Binaries LTSA98

Abstract:My group, in close collaboration with Dr. Zhang's group at University of Alabama-Huntsville, have been systematically analyzing and re-analyzing a substantial amount of archival data from previous and ongoing X-ray missions, in order to study possible relativistic effects around stellar-mass black holes and neutron stars. Our effort has been focused primarily on the data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We carefully studied interesting quasi-periodic X-ray variability in newly discovered black hole candidates (XTE J1859+226 and XTE J1550-564), which, as we had proposed earlier, could be caused by general relativistic process (e.g., frame dragging) around the central black hole. We also discovered an intriguing temporal correlation between X-ray photons at different energies that is associated with the quasi-periodic signals of interest. The results provided new insights into the physical origin of the phenomena. Furthermore, we studied the spectral lines of black hole candidates which provide another avenue for studying general relativistic processes around black holes. The lines-may originate in the relativistic jets (which could be powered by the spin of the black hole) or in the disk around the black hole, as in the cases of 4U 1630-47 and GX 339-4 (two well-known black hole candidates), and may thus be distorted or shifted due to relativistic effects. Of course, neutron star systems were not forgotten either. After examining the properties of newly discovered fast quasi-periodic variability (at kiloHertz) associated with such systems, we proposed a relativistic model to explain the origin of the signals. We have also started to use new great observatories in orbit (such as Chandra and XMM-Newton) to observe the sources that are of interest to us. Finally, interesting results were also been obtained from our collaborations with other groups who are interested in some of the same objects. Such collaborative efforts have greatly enhanced the project and will likely continue in the future.
X-ray spectral state evolution in IGR J17091-3624 and comparison of its heartbeat oscillation properties with those of GRS 1915+105

Abstract:In this work, we study the X-ray timing and spectral evolution of the transient low mass X-ray binary IGR J17091-3624 during first 66 days of its 2011 outburst. We present results obtained from observations with two instruments, Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)/Proportional Counter Array (PCA) and SWIFT/X-ray telescope (XRT), between 09 February, 2011 and 15 April, 2011. Using quasi-periodic oscillation classifications, power density spectrum characteristics, time-lag behavior and energy spectral properties, we determine source states and their transitions at different times of the outburst. During the first part of the evolution, the source followed trends usually observed from transient black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs). Interestingly, a gradual transition is observed in IGR J17091-3624 from the low-variability SIMS, commonly seen in BHXBs, to a high-variability state with regular, repetitive and structured pulsations, seen only from GRS 1915+105 (also known as 'rho' class variability/'heartbeat' oscillations). We study the time evolution of characteristic time-scale, quality factor and rms amplitude of heartbeat oscillations in IGR J17091-3624. We also present a detailed comparison of the timing and spectral properties of heartbeat oscillations and their evolution in IGR J17091-3624 and GRS 1915+105.

X-ray and Radio Timing of the Pulsar in 3C 58

Abstract:We present timing data spanning 6.4 yr for the young and energetic PSR J0205+6449, in the supernova remnant 3C 58. Data were obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, the Jodrell Bank Observatory and the Green Bank Telescope. We present phase-coherent timing analyses showing timing noise and two spin-up glitches with fractional frequency increases of ~3.4E-7 near MJD 52555, and ~3.8E-6 between MJDs 52777 and 53062. These glitches are unusually large if the pulsar was created in the historical supernova in 1181 as has been suggested. For the X-ray timing we developed a new unbinned maximum-likelihood method for determining pulse arrival times which performs significantly better than the traditional binned techniques. In addition, we present an X-ray pulse profile analysis of four years of RXTE data showing that the pulsar is detected up to ~40 keV. We also present the first measurement of the phase offset between the radio and X-ray pulse for this source, showing that the radio pulse leads the X-ray pulse by phi=0.10+/-0.01 in phase. We compile all known measurements of the phase offsets between radio and X-ray and radio and gamma-ray pulses for X-ray and gamma-ray pulsars. We show that there is no relationship between pulse period and phase offset, supported by our measurement of the phase offset for PSR J0205+6449.

The Steady Spin Down Rate of 4U 1907+09

Abstract:Using X-ray data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we report the pulse timing results of the accretion powered high mass X-ray binary (HMXRB) pulsar 4U 1907+09 covering a time span of almost two years. We measured three new pulse periods in addition to the previously measured four pulse periods. We are able to connect pulse arrival times in phase for more than a year. The source has been spinning down almost at a constant rate with a spin down rate of \dot \nu = (-3.54 \pm 0.02) \times 10^{-14} Hz s ^{-1} for more than 15 years. Residuals of pulse arrival times yield a very low level of random walk noise strengths \sim 2 \times 10^{-20} rad ^{2} sec ^{-3} on a time scale of 383 days, which is four decades lower than that of the HMXRB pulsar Vela X-1. The noise strength is only a factor of 5 greater than that of the low mass X-ray binary pulsar (LMXRB) 4U 1626-67. The low level of the timing noise and the very stable spin down rate of 4U 1907+09 makes this source unique among the HMXRBs, providing another example, in addition to 4U 1626-67, of long term quiet spin down from an accreting source. These examples show that the extended quiet spin down episodes observed in the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) pulsars 1RXS J170849.0-400910 and 1E 2259+586 do not necessarly imply that these sources are not accreting pulsars.

Abstract:We present the results from the RXTE observations of Cygnus X-1 in its high state. In the energy range of 2-200 keV, the observed X-ray spectrum can be described by a model consisting of a soft blackbody component and a broken power-law with a high energy cutoff. The low energy spectrum (below about 11 keV) varies significantly from observation to observation while the high energy portion changes little. The X-ray flux varies on all timescales down to milliseconds. The power density spectrum (PDS) can be characterized by excess red noise (“1/f”) at low frequencies and a white noise component that extends to 1-3 Hz before being cut off. At higher frequencies, the PDS becomes power-law again, with a slope of roughly -2 (i.e., “1/f^2”). Broad peaks in the range of 3-9 Hz are present, and might be due to quasi-periodic oscillations. The PDS shows interesting spectral dependence: the 1/f component becomes more prominent when the low-energy spectrum becomes softer. The difference in the observed spectral and timing properties between the low and high states is qualitatively consistent with a simple “fluctuating corona” model.
Measuring the Spins of Stellar-Mass Black Holes

Abstract:In astronomy, the problem of black holes is arguably second in importance only to the problem of cosmology. A current frontier in black hole research is the measurement of spin. During the past three years, the spins of several stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries have been measured via two techniques: fitting the X-ray continuum spectrum and modeling the profile of the Fe K line. This fledgling enterprise motivates the following decadal goals: (1) Firmly establish the continuum-fitting and Fe K methods; obtain precise values of spin for 10-20 black holes, several using both methods; (2) use the derived masses and spins to test models of jets, GRBs, supernovae, black hole formation, black hole binary evolution, etc.; (3) serve the IXO mission by securing the Fe K methodology, which is currently the only means to measure the spins of supermassive black holes in AGN; (4) identify the correct model of high-frequency QPOs, thereby opening a third channel for measuring spin; (5) pursue X-ray polarimetry as a means of securing the continuum-fitting and Fe K methods, and also as a possible fourth avenue to spin; and (6) develop and test MHD models of thin disks in strong gravity. Achieving these goals requires the establishment of an RXTE follow-on mission dedicated to the study of bright and transient compact objects, as well as strong support for theoretical work on 3D MHD simulations of accretion flows in the Kerr metric of a spinning black hole.

The Ephemeris and Dipping Spectral Behavior of X1624-490

Abstract:We present striking results from Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the 21-hr low mass X-ray binary X1624-490, showing five complex dips in unprecedented detail. For the first time, dipping is detected up to 15 keV. Prominent flares are also observed in the light curves, limited to energies above 8 keV. Spectra selected by intensity during dip episodes can be well fit with a two-component model consisting of a point-like blackbody from the neutron star and progressive covering of an extended Comptonized region, presumably an accretion disk corona (ADC), corrected for photons scattered into and out of the X-ray beam by a interstellar dust halo. We find that the outer regions of the absorber are highly ionized and that electron scattering is totally responsible for the X-ray attenuation during shallow dipping. The timescales of dip ingress and egress indicate that the envelope of material absorbing the ADC has smaller angular size than the ADC itself, and that the ADC is likely limited to a height-to-radius ratio of 10%, rather than being spherical in extent. In addition, we have analyzed 4.5 yrs of RXTE All Sky Monitor (ASM) coverage to derive the first accurate orbital ephemeris for X1624-490, with phase zero (the time of dip centers) well-described by the relation 2450088.63918(69) + N*0.869907(12) (JD).

Abstract:The X-ray thermal isolated neutron star (XTINS) RX J0806.4–4123 shows interesting multiwavelength properties that seemingly deviate from those of similar neutron stars. An accurate determination of the spin frequency change over time can assist in interpreting RX J0806.4–4123's properties in comparison to those of other XTINSs and the wider pulsar population. From 2019 to 2023 we carried out a tailored X-ray timing campaign of RX J0806.4–4123 with the NICER instrument. We used statistical properties of the Fourier coefficients and the Z K 2 test for phase connecting separate observations and finding a timing solution for the entire data set. We also developed a simple and universal method for estimating the uncertainties of the frequency ν and its derivative ν ̇ from the empirical dependencies of Z K 2 on trial values of these parameters, with account of all significant harmonics of the frequency. Applying this method, we determined a spin-down rate ν ̇ = − 7.3 ( 1.2 ) × 10 − 17 Hz s − 1 . The resulting spin-down power E ̇ = 2.6 × 10 29 erg s −1 is the lowest among the XTINSs, and it is a factor of 60 lower than the X-ray luminosity of this neutron star. RX J0806.4–4123 is also among the pulsars with the lowest measured E ̇ in general.

Abstract:We have found and analysed 16 multi-peaked type-I bursts from the neutron-star low mass X-ray binary 4U 1636$-$53 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). One of the bursts is a rare quadruple-peaked burst which was not previously reported. All 16 bursts show a multi-peaked structure not only in the X-ray light curves but also in the bolometric light curves. Most of the multi-peaked bursts appear in observations during the transition from the hard to the soft state in the colour-colour diagram. We find an anti-correlation between the second peak flux and the separation time between two peaks. We also find that in the double-peaked bursts the peak-flux ratio and the temperature of the thermal component in the pre-burst spectra are correlated. This indicates that the double-peaked structure in the light curve of the bursts may be affected by enhanced accretion rate in the disc, or increased temperature of the neutron star.

Abstract:We report on the X-ray spectral behavior of the exceptionally bright X-ray nova XTE J1550-564 during its 1998-99 outburst. Our study is based on 209 pointed observations using the PCA and HEXTE instruments onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer spanning 250 days and covering the entire double-peaked eruption that occurred from 1998 September until 1999 May. The spectra are fit to a model including multicolor blackbody disk and power-law components. The source is observed in the very high and high/soft outburst states of black hole X-ray novae. During the very high state, when the power-law component dominated the spectrum, the inner disk radius is observed to vary by more than an order of magnitude; the radius decreased by a factor of 16 in one day during a 6.8 Crab flare. If the larger of these observed radii is taken to be the last stable orbit, then the smaller observed radius would imply that the inner edge of the disk is inside the event horizon! However, we conclude that the apparent variations of the inner disk radius observed during periods of increased power-law emission are probably caused by the failure of the multicolor disk/power-law model; the actual physical radius of the inner disk may remain fairly constant. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the observed inner disk radius remains approximately constant over 120 days in the high state, when the power-law component is weak, even though the disk flux and total flux vary by an order of magnitude. The mass of the black hole inferred by equating the approximately constant inner disk radius observed in the high/soft state with the last stable orbit for a Schwarzschild black hole is M_BH = 7.4 M_sun (D/6 kpc) (cos i)^-1/2.

Abstract:Recent X-ray observations have had a major impact on topics ranging from protostars to cosmology. They have also drawn attention to important and general physical processes that currently limit our understanding of thermal and nonthermal X-ray sources. These include unmeasured atomic astrophysics data (wavelengths, oscillator strengths etc.), basic hydromagnetic processes (e.g. shock structure, reconnection), plasma processes (such as electron-ion equipartition and heat conduction) and radiative transfer (in disks and accretion columns). Progress on these problems will probably come from integrative studies that draw upon observations, throughout the electromagnetic spectrum, of different classes of source. X-ray observations are also giving a new perspective on astronomical subjects, like the nature of galactic nuclei and the evolution of stellar populations. They are contributing to answering central cosmological questions including the measurement of the matter content of the universe, understanding its overall luminosity density, describing its chemical evolution and locating the first luminous objects. X-ray astronomy has a healthy future with several international space missions under construction and in development.

Fast X-ray Oscillations During Magnetar Flares

Abstract:The giant flares produced by highly magnetized neutron stars, "magnetars," are the brightest sources of high energy radiation outside our solar system. Serendipitous observations with NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) of the two most recent flares resulted in the discovery of high frequency oscillations in their X-ray fluxes. The frequencies of these oscillations range from about 20 Hz to as high as 1800 Hz, and may represent the first detection of global oscillation modes of neutron stars. Here I will present an observational and theoretical overview of these oscillations and discuss how they might allow us to probe neutron star interiors and dense matter physics.

Abstract:We report on the discovery and monitoring observations of a new galactic black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 by Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The new source appeared on the X-ray sky on October 21 2009 and was active for almost 8 months. Phenomenologically, the source exhibited the low-hard/high-soft spectral state bi-modality and the variability evolution during the state transition that matches standard behavior expected from a stellar mass black hole binary. We model the energy spectrum throughout the outburst using a generic Comptonization model assuming that part of the input soft radiation in the form of a black body spectrum gets reprocessed in the Comptonizing medium. We follow the evolution of fractional root-mean-square (RMS) variability in the RXTE/PCA energy band with the source spectral state and conclude that broad band variability is strongly correlated with the source hardness (or Comptonized fraction). We follow changes in the energy distribution of rms variability during the low-hard state and the state transition and find further evidence that variable emission is strongly concentrated in the power-law spectral component. We discuss the implication of our results to the Comptonization regimes during different spectral states. Correlations of spectral and variability properties provide measurements of the BH mass and distance to the source. The spectral-timing correlation scaling technique applied to the RXTE observation during the hard-to-soft state transition indicates a mass of the BH in XTE J1752-223 between 8 and 11 solar masses and a distance to the source about 3.5 kiloparsec.
