Abstract: We define the quantum correction of the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Under the assumption of no weak quantum correction, we prove that the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ is a locally symmetric space with the Weil-Petersson metric. For Calabi-Yau threefolds, we show that no strong quantum correction is equivalent to that, with the Hodge metric, the image $ \Phi(\mathcal{T})$ of the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ under the period map $\Phi$ is an open submanifold of a globally Hermitian symmetric space $W$ of the same dimension as $\mathcal{T}$. Finally, for Hyperk\"ahler manifold of dimension $2n \geq 4$, we find both locally and globally defined families of $(2,0)$ and $(2n,0)$-classes over the Teichm\"uller space of polarized Hyperk\"ahler manifolds.
On the String Landscape Without Hypermultiplets

Abstract:In this work we study interesting corners of the quantum gravity landscape with 8 supercharges pushing the boundaries of our current understanding. Calabi-Yau threefolds compactifications of F/M/type II theories to 6, 5 and 4 dimensions are the most prominent examples of this class, and these always lead to a universal hypermultiplet coming from the volume/string coupling constant. We find that there are asymmetric orbifold constructions which have no hypermultiplets in 4 or 5 dimensions and no neutral hypers in 6d. We argue that these theories can also be obtained by going to strong coupling/small volume regions of geometric constructions where a new Coulomb branch opens up and moving in this direction freezes the volume/string coupling constant. Interestingly we find that the Kodaira condition encountered in geometric limits of F-theory compactifications to 6 dimensions is violated in these corners of the landscape due to strong quantum corrections. We also construct a theory in 3 dimensions which if it were to arise by toroidal compactifications from 5d, it would have to come from pure ${\mathcal N}=1$ supergravity with no massless scalar fields.

Abstract:The metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theory is known to receive D-brane and NS5-brane instanton corrections. We compute explicit expressions for these corrections in the one-instanton approximation, but to all orders in the string coupling expansion around the instantons. As a consistency check, we prove that in the case of one (universal) hypermultiplet, the resulting metric fits the Przanowski description of self-dual Einstein spaces. We also show that in the small string coupling limit the metric acquires a certain square structure, consistently with expectations from the string amplitudes analysis. This result provides explicit predictions for yet mysterious string amplitudes in the presence of NS5-branes.

Loop-Corrected Compactifications of the Heterotic String with Line Bundles

Abstract:We consider the E8 x E8 heterotic string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau manifolds with bundles containing abelian factors in their structure group. Generic low energy consequences such as the generalised Green-Schwarz mechanism for the multiple anomalous abelian gauge groups are studied. We also compute the holomorphic gauge couplings and induced Fayet-Iliopoulos terms up to one-loop order, where the latter are interpreted as stringy one-loop corrections to the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau condition. Such models generically have frozen combinations of Kaehler and dilaton moduli. We study concrete bundles with structure group SU(N) x U(1)^M yielding quasi-realistic gauge groups with chiral matter given by certain bundle cohomology classes. We also provide a number of explicit tadpole free examples of bundles defined by exact sequences of sums of line bundles over complete intersection Calabi-Yau spaces. This includes one example with precisely the Standard Model gauge symmetry.

On string one-loop correction to the Einstein-Hilbert term and its implications on the Kahler potential

Abstract:To compute the string one-loop correction to the Kahler potential of moduli fields of string compactifications in Einstein-frame, one must compute: the string one-loop correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action, the string one-loop correction to the moduli kinetic terms, the string one-loop correction to the definition of the holomorphic coordinates. In this note, we compute the string one-loop correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action of type II string theory compactified on orientifolds of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find that the one-loop correction is determined by the new supersymmetric index studied by Cecotti, Fendley, Intriligator, and Vafa. As a simple application, we apply our results to estimate the size of the one-loop corrections around a conifold point in the Kahler moduli space.

Modular forms and hierarchical Yukawa couplings in heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications

Abstract:We study the modular symmetry in heterotic string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular, we examine whether moduli-dependent holomorphic Yukawa couplings are described by modular forms in the context of heterotic string theory with standard embedding. We find that $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ modular symmetry emerges in asymptotic regions of the Calabi-Yau moduli space. The instanton-corrected holomorphic Yukawa couplings are then given by modular forms under $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ or its congruence subgroups such as $\Gamma_0(3)$ and $\Gamma_0(4)$. In addition to the modular symmetry, it turns out that another coupling selection rule controls the structure of holomorphic Yukawa couplings. Furthermore, the coexistence of both the positive and negative modular weights for matter fields leads to a hierarchical structure of matter field Kähler metric. Thus, these holomorphic modular forms and the matter field Kähler metric play an important role in realizing a hierarchical structure of physical Yukawa couplings.

Abstract:Kutasov--type duals of supersymmetric gauge theories had been studied only in the dual regime and the s-confining case. Here we extend the discussion to the case of less flavor, analogous to the case of quantum-modified moduli space in Seiberg duality. Unlike the Seiberg duality, however, we find that parts of the moduli space become superconformal, generalizing the so far isolated example of SU(2) theory with two doublets and a triplet. We also point out that the magnetic superpotential needs to be augmented by an additional instanton-generated piece when the magnetic group is SU(2).

Abstract:We construct a quantization of the moduli space $\mathcal{GH}_\Lambda(S\times\mathbb{R})$ of maximal globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metrics on $S\times \mathbb{R}$ with constant sectional curvature $\Lambda$, for a punctured surface $S$. Although this moduli space is known to be symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space of $S$ independently of the value of $\Lambda$, we define geometrically natural classes of observables leading to $\Lambda$-dependent quantizations. Using special coordinate systems, we first view $\mathcal{GH}_\Lambda(S\times\mathbb{R})$ as the set of points of a cluster $\mathscr{X}$-variety valued in the ring of generalized complex numbers $\mathbb{R}_\Lambda = \mathbb{R}[\ell]/(\ell^2+\Lambda)$. We then develop an $\mathbb{R}_\Lambda$-version of the quantum theory for cluster $\mathscr{X}$-varieties by establishing $\mathbb{R}_\Lambda$-versions of the quantum dilogarithm function. As a consequence, we obtain three families of projective unitary representations of the mapping class group of $S$. For $\Lambda <0$ these representations recover those of Fock and Goncharov, while for $\Lambda\geq 0$ the representations are new.

Abstract:We reexamine the massless spectrum of a heterotic string vacuum at large radius and present two results. The first result is to construct a vector bundle $\mathcal{Q}$ and operator $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$ whose kernel amounts to deformations solving `F-term' type equations. This resolves a dilemma in previous works in which the spin connection is treated as an independent degree of freedom, something that is not the case in string theory. The second result is to utilise the moduli space metric, constructed in previous work, to define an adjoint operator $\overline{\mathcal{D}}^†$. The kernel of $\overline{\mathcal{D}}^†$ amounts to deformations solving `D-term' type equations. Put together, we show there is a vector bundle $\mathcal{Q}$ with a metric, a $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$ operator and a gauge fixing (holomorphic gauge) in which the massless spectrum are harmonic representatives of $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$. This is remarkable as previous work indicated the Hodge decomposition of massless deformations were complicated and in particular not harmonic except at the standard embedding.

Quantum Moduli Spaces of $N=1$ String Theories

Abstract:Generically, string models with $N=1$ supersymmetry are not expected to have moduli beyond perturbation theory; stringy non-perturbative effects as well as low energy field-theoretic phenomena such as gluino condensation will lift any flat directions. In this note, we describe models where some subspace of the moduli space survives non-perturbatively. Discrete $R$ symmetries forbid any inherently stringy effects, and dynamical considerations control the field-theoretic effects. The surviving subspace is a space of high symmetry; the system is attracted to this subspace by a potential which we compute. Models of this type may be useful for considerations of duality and raise troubling cosmological questions about string theory. Our considerations also suggest a mechanism for fixing the expectation value of the dilaton.

Abstract:A bstract We study a class of quantum integrable systems derived from dimer graphs and also described by local toric Calabi-Yau geometries with higher genus mirror curves, generalizing some previous works on genus one mirror curves. We compute the spectra of the quantum systems both by standard perturbation method and by Bohr-Sommerfeld method with quantum periods as the phase volumes. In this way, we obtain some exact analytic results for the classical and quantum periods of the Calabi-Yau geometries. We also determine the differential operators of the quantum periods and compute the topological string free energy in Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. The results agree with calculations from other methods such as the topological vertex.

Abstract:We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1404.5527" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1404.5527">arXiv:1404.5527</a>. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

Matching quantum string corrections and circular Wilson loops in $AdS_4 \times CP^3$

Abstract:Recent progresses in the computation of quantum string corrections to holographic Wilson loops are extended to the case of strings in $AdS_{4}\times CP^{3}$. For this, the ratio of 1/2-BPS circular and 1/6-BPS latitude fermionic Wilson loops in ABJM is considered at strong coupling by studying the corresponding semiclassical string partition functions. Explicit evaluation of fluctuation determinants using phaseshifts and diffeomorphism invariant regulators leads to exact matching with the recent field theory proposal. Key to this computation is the choice of boundary conditions for massless fermions. In the limit for which the latitude Wilson loop has a trivial expectation value, the long known localization result for the 1/2-BPS fermionic circular Wilson loop in ABJM is recovered.

Quantum de Sitter Entropy and Sphere Partition Functions: A-Hypergeometric Approach to Higher Loop Corrections

Abstract:In order to find quantum corrections to the de Sitter entropy, a new approach to higher loop Feynman integral computations on the sphere is presented. Arbitrary scalar Feynman integrals on a spherical background are brought into the generalized Euler integral (A-hypergeometric series/GKZ system) form by expressing the massive scalar propagator as a quotient of a bivariate radial Mellin transform of the massless scalar propagator in one higher dimensional Euclidean flat space. This formulation is expanded to include massive and massless vector fields by construction of similar embedding space propagators. Vector Feynman integrals are shown to be sums over generalized Euler integrals formed of underlying scalar Feynman integrals. Granting existence of general spin embedding space propagators, the same is shown to be true for general spin Feynman integrals.

Quantum corrections to DGKT and the Weak Gravity Conjecture

Abstract:We study D4 brane domain walls in the scale-separated 4d $\mathcal{N}$=1 AdS$_4$ DGKT scenario. Classically, these are BPS and satisfy a no-force condition since their tension equals their charge. We show that this property is not stable against quantum corrections and that these increase the brane tension-to-charge ratio, rendering the branes self-attractive. As a result, DGKT seems to be in tension with the Weak Gravity Conjecture for membranes. The quantum effects we consider include non-perturbative gaugino condensation on the D4-brane worldvolume and Euclidean D2 brane instantons, which correct the tension-to-charge ratio because the DGKT construction breaks all parity symmetries. Similar results hold in other 4d $\mathcal{N}$=1 setups not protected by parity symmetries.

Non-planar corrections in ABJM theory from quantum M2 branes

Abstract:The quantization of semiclassical strings in AdS spacetimes yields predictions for the strong-coupling behaviour of the scaling dimensions of the corresponding operators in the planar limit of the dual gauge theory. Finding non-planar corrections requires computing string loops (corresponding to torus and higher genus surfaces), which is a challenging task. It turns out that in the case of the $U_k(N) \times U_{-k}(N)$ ABJM theory there is an alternative approach: one may semiclassically quantize M2 branes in AdS$_{4}\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_{k}$ which are wrapped around the 11d circle of radius $1/k= \lambda/N$. Such M2 branes are the M-theory generalization of the strings in AdS$_4\times $CP$^3$. In this work, we show that by expanding in large M2 brane tension $ T_2 \sim \sqrt{kN} $ for fixed $k$, followed by an expansion in large $k$, we can predict the large $\lambda$ asymptotics of the non-planar corrections to the dimensions of the dual ABJM operators. As a specific example, we consider the M2 brane configuration that generalizes the long folded string with large spin in AdS$_4$, and compute the 1-loop correction to its energy. This calculation allows us to determine non-planar corrections to the universal scaling function or cusp anomalous dimension. We extend our analysis to the semiclassical M2 branes that generalize the "short" and "long" circular strings with two equal angular momenta in CP$^3$. The "short" M2 brane corresponds to a dual operator whose dimension at strong coupling scales as $\Delta \sim \lambda^{1/4} + \dots$, and we derive the leading non-planar correction to it.
