Abstract:The torque exerted on a rotating, magnetized star by a magnetically threaded accretion disk is dependent on the ''fastness parameter'' omega(s) = (R(o)/R(c))(3/2), where R(o) and R(c) are the inner edge of the accretion disk and the corotation radius of the star respectively. In equilibrium state for which there is no torque on the star, the fastness parameter reaches its critical value omega(c). Recently Wang (1995) obtained that the value of omega(c) lies in the range 0.875 - 0.95. We argue that an uncertainty of a factor of 4 exists in the torque condition at the inner edge of the disk. Together with uncertainties relating to the strength of the toroidal field, we find that the value of omega(c) can range between 0.71 and 0.95. Our results present constraints on the magnetically threaded disk model and seem to be consistent with observations of the binary X-ray pulsar 4U 1626-67.

Abstract:The conventional picture of disk accretion onto magnetized neutron stars has been challenged by the spin changes observed in a few X-ray pulsars, and by theoretical results from numerical simulations of disk-magnetized star interactions. These indicate possible accretion during the propeller regime and the spin-down torque increasing with the accretion rate. Here we present a model for the accretion torque exerted by the disk on a magnetized neutron star, assuming accretion continues even for rapid rotators. The accretion torque is shown to have some different characteristics from that in the conventional model, but in accord with observations and numerical calculations of accretion-powered magnetized neutron stars. We also discuss its possible applications to the spin evolution in X-ray pulsars.

Abstract:The magnetic torque contributed by field-threading disk takes on a significant role in the total torque exerted on the magnetic neutron stars in X-ray binaries. In previous works, the toroidal field generated by rotational shear is estimated from the Faraday induction law. It is re-evaluated in this paper with the electrodynamical boundary conditions across the surface of the disk in an axisymmetric case. The dependence of the resistivity of disk plasma on radius is also estimated based on the standard disk theory. A more realistic expression of the disk torque is then derived. The applications to several disk-accreted X-ray pulsars are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The Stefan-Boltzmann law yields a fundamental constraint on the geometry of inner accretion disks in black-hole X-ray binaries. It follows from considering the irradiating flux and the effective temperature of the inner parts of the disk, which implies that a strong quasi-thermal component with the average energy higher than that of a blackbody at the effective temperature has to be present whenever relativistic Fe K fluorescence and reflection features are observed. The apparent absence of such quasi-thermal component with the color temperature of $\sim$1 keV in high-luminosity hard states is not compatible with a strongly irradiated disk extending close to the innermost stable circular orbit. Instead, the disk should be either truncated at a relatively large radius or irradiated by a corona at a large height, which would reduce the effective temperature and bring it to an agreement with the data. We also study constraints on disk/corona models following from comparing the disk densities fitted in literature using variable-density reflection codes with those calculated by us from the ionization parameter, the luminosity and the disk inner radius. We find that the fitted densities are much higher/lower in the hard/soft state of binaries, implying significant problems with the used assumptions and methods.

Abstract:The magnitude of the inner edge of accretion disks in low mass X-ray binaries is controversial in theoretical considerations and observations. Using the inner boundary conditions of accretion disks the inner disk radius has been calculated by taking into account the effect of feedback radiation and the deviation of disk rotation from Keplerian. Results have been applied to the observations and possible interpretations have been proposed for the X-ray spectra and quasiperiodic oscillations.

Abstract:The recent emergence of a new class of accretion-powered, transient, millisecond X-ray pulsars presents some difficulties for the conventional picture of accretion onto rapidly rotating magnetized neutron stars and their spin behavior during outbursts. In particular, it is unclear from the standard paradigm how these systems manage to accrete over such a wide range in dM/dt (i.e., >~ a factor of 50), and why the neutron stars exhibit a high rate of spindown in at least a number of cases. Following up on prior suggestions, we propose that `fast' X-ray pulsars can continue to accrete, and that their accretion disks terminate at approximately the corotation radius. We demonstrate the existence of such disk solutions by modifying the Shakura-Sunyaev equations with a simple magnetic torque prescription. The solutions are completely analytic, and have the same dependence on dM/dt and alpha (the viscosity parameter) as the original Shakura-Sunyaev solutions; but, the radial profiles can be considerably modified, depending on the degree of fastness. We apply these results to compute the torques expected during the outbursts of the transient millisecond pulsars, and find that we can explain the large spindown rates that are observed for quite plausible surface magnetic fields of ~10^9 G.

Locking of the Rotation of Disk-Accreting Magnetized Stars

Abstract:We investigate the rotational equilibrium state of a disk accreting magnetized stars using axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. In this ``locked'' state, the spin-up torque balances the spin-down torque so that the net average torque on the star is zero. We investigated two types of initial conditions, one with a relatively weak stellar magnetic field and a high coronal density, and the other with a stronger stellar field and a lower coronal density. We observed that for both initial conditions the rotation of the star is locked to the rotation of the disk. In the second case, the radial field lines carry significant angular momentum out of the star. However, this did not appreciably change the condition for locking of the rotation of the star. We find that in the equilibrium state the corotation radius $r_{co}$ is related to the magnetospheric radius $r_A$ as $r_{co}/r_A\approx 1.2-1.3$ for case (1) and $r_{co}/r_A\approx 1.4-1.5$ for case (2). We estimated periods of rotation in the equilibrium state for classical T Tauri stars, dwarf novae and X-ray millisecond pulsars.

Abstract:The standard general relativistic model of a razor-thin accretion disk around a black hole, developed by Novikov & Thorne (NT) in 1973, assumes the shear stress vanishes at the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) and that, outside the ISCO, the shear stress is produced by an effective turbulent viscosity. However, astrophysical accretion disks are not razor-thin, it is uncertain whether the shear stress necessarily vanishes at the ISCO, and the magnetic field, which is thought to drive turbulence in disks, may contain large-scale structures that do not behave like a simple local scalar viscosity. We describe three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accretion disks around black holes with a range of spin parameters, and we use the simulations to assess the validity of the NT model. Our fiducial initial magnetic field consists of multiple (alternating polarity) poloidal field loops whose shape is roughly isotropic in the disk in order to match the isotropic turbulence expected in the poloidal plane. For a thin disk with an aspect ratio |h/r| ~ 0.07 around a non-spinning black hole, we find a decrease in the accreted specific angular momentum of 2.9% relative to the NT model and an excess luminosity from inside the ISCO of 3.5%. The deviations in the case of spinning black holes are of the same order. In addition, the deviations decrease with decreasing |h/r|. We therefore conclude that magnetized thin accretion disks in x-ray binaries in the thermal/high-soft spectral state ought to be well-described by the NT model, especially at luminosities below 30% of Eddington where we expect a very small disk thickness |h/r| <~ 0.05. We also discuss how the stress and the luminosity inside the ISCO depend on the assumed initial magnetic field geometry. (abridged)

Abstract:The interaction of a rotating star’s magnetic field with a surrounding plasma disk lies at the heart of many questions posed by neutron stars in X-ray binaries. We consider the opening of stellar magnetic flux due to differential rotation along field lines coupling the star and disk, using a simple model for the disk-opened flux, the torques exerted on the star by the magnetosphere, and the power extracted by the electromagnetic wind. We examine the conditions under which the system enters an equilibrium spin state, in which the accretion torque is instantaneously balanced by the pulsar wind torque alone. For magnetic moments, spin frequencies, and accretion rates relevant to accreting millisecond pulsars, the spin-down torque from this enhanced pulsar wind can be substantially larger than that predicted by existing models of the disk–magnetosphere interaction, and is in principle capable of maintaining spin equilibrium at frequencies less than 1 kHz. We speculate that this mechanism may account for the non-detection of frequency increases during outbursts of SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE J1814-338, and may be generally responsible for preventing spin-up to sub-millisecond periods. If the pulsar wind is collimated by the surrounding environment, the resulting jet can satisfy the power requirements of the highly relativistic outflows from Cir X-1 and Sco X-1. In this framework, the jet power scales relatively weakly with accretion rate, , and would be suppressed at high accretion rates only if the stellar magnetic moment is sufficiently low.
Spin-Up/Spin-Down of Magnetized Stars with Accretion Disks and Outflows

Abstract:An investigation is made of disk accretion of matter onto a rotating star with an aligned dipole magnetic field. A new aspect of this work is that when the angular velocity of the star and disk differ substantially we argue that the $\bf B$ field linking the star and disk rapidly inflates to give regions of open field lines extending from the polar caps of the star and from the disk. The open field line region of the disk leads to the possibility of magnetically driven outflows. An analysis is made of the outflows and their back affect on the disk structure assuming an ``$\ap$" turbulent viscosity model for the disk and a magnetic diffusivity comparable to this viscosity. The outflows are found to extend over a range of radial distances inward to a distance close to $r_{to}$, which is the distance of the maximum of the angular rotation rate of the disk. We find that $r_{to}$ depends on the star's magnetic moment, the accretion rate, and the disk's magnetic diffusivity. The outflow regime is accompanied in general by a spin-up of the rotation rate of the star. When $r_{to}$ exceeds the star's corotation radius $r_{cr} = (GM/\om_*^2)^{1\ov 3}$, we argue that outflow solutions do not occur, but instead that ``magnetic braking" of the star by the disk due to field-line twisting occurs in the vicinity of $r_{cr}$. The magnetic braking solutions can give spin-up or spin-down (or no spin change) of the star depending mainly on the star's magnetic moment and the mass accretion rate. For a system with $r_{to}$ comparable to $r_{cr}$, bimodal behavior is possible where extraneous perturbations cause the system to flip between spin-up and spin-down.

The spin of accreting stars: dependence on magnetic coupling to the disc

Abstract:We formulate a general, steady-state model for the torque on a magnetized star from a surrounding accretion disc. For the first time, we include the opening of dipolar magnetic field lines due to the differential rotation between the star and disc, so the magnetic topology then depends on the strength of the magnetic coupling to the disc. This coupling is determined by the effective slip rate of magnetic field lines that penetrate the diffusive disc. Stronger coupling (i.e., lower slip rate) leads to a more open topology and thus to a weaker magnetic torque on the star from the disc. In the expected strong coupling regime, we find that the spin-down torque on the star is more than an order of magnitude smaller than calculated by previous models. We also use our general approach to examine the equilibrium (`disc-locked') state, in which the net torque on the star is zero. In this state, we show that the stellar spin rate is roughly an order of magnitude faster than predicted by previous models. This challenges the idea that slowly-rotating, accreting protostars are disc locked. Furthermore, when the field is sufficiently open (e.g., for mass accretion rates > 5 x 10^{-9} M_sun / yr, for typical accreting protostars), the star will receive no magnetic spin-down torque from the disc at all. We therefore conclude that protostars must experience a spin-down torque from a source that has not yet been considered in the star-disc torque models--possibly from a stellar wind along the open field lines.

Abstract:The properties of super-Eddington accretion disks exhibit substantial distinctions from the sub-Eddington ones. In this paper, we investigate the accretion process of a magnetized neutron star (NS) surrounded by a super-Eddington disk. By constructing self-similar solutions for the disk structure, we study in detail an interaction between the NS magnetosphere and the inner region of the disk, revealing that this interaction takes place within a thin boundary layer. The magnetosphere truncation radius is found to be approximately proportional to the Alfvén radius, with a coefficient ranging between 0.34–0.71, influenced by the advection and twisting of a magnetic field, NS rotation, and radiation emitted from an NS accretion column. Under super-Eddington accretion, the NS can readily spin up to become a rapid rotator. The proposed model can be employed to explore the accretion and evolution of NSs in diverse astrophysical contexts, such as ultraluminous X-ray binaries or active galactic nucleus disks.

On the minimum spin period of accreting pulsars

Abstract:The distribution of the spin frequencies of neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries exhibits a cut-off at 730 Hz, below the break-up frequency (mass-shedding limit) of neutron stars. The absence of the sub-millisecond pulsars presents a problem, given that these systems are older than the spin-up timescale. We confront models of disc-magnetosphere interaction near torque equilibrium balanced by the torque due to gravitational wave emission. We note that field lines penetrating the disc beyond the inner radius reduce the maximum rotation frequency of the star, a result well-known since the seminal work of Ghosh & Lamb. We show that the polar cap area corresponds to about half the neutron star surface area at the cut-off frequency if the inner radius is slightly smaller than the corotation radius. We then include the change in the moment of inertia of the star due to the accretion of mass and find that this effect further reduces the maximum rotation frequency of the star. Finally, we include the torque due to gravitational wave emission and calculate its contribution to the torque equilibrium. Our results suggest that all three processes are significant at the cut-off frequency, and all of them must be considered in addressing the absence of sub-millisecond pulsars.

Abstract:Most of ultraluminous X-ray sources are thought to be objects accreting above their Eddington limits. In the recently identified class of ultraluminous X-ray pulsars, accretor is a neutron star and thus has a fairly small mass with a small Eddington limit. The accretion disc structure around such an object affects important observables such as equilibrium period, period derivative and the size of the magnetosphere. We propose a model of a nearly-standard accretion disc interacting with the magnetosphere only in a thin layer near the inner disc rim. Our calculations show that the size of the magnetosphere may be represented as the classical Alfv\'en radius times a dimensionless factor $\xi$ which depends on the disc thickness only. In the case of radiation-pressure-dominated disc, the size of the magnetosphere does not depend on the mass accretion rate. In general, increasing the disc thickness leads to a larger magnetosphere size in units of the Alfv\'en radius. For large enough mass accretion rates and magnetic moments, it is important to take into account not only the pressure of the magnetic field and the radiation pressure inside the disc, but also the pressure of the radiation produced close to the surface of the neutron star in accretion column. The magnetospheric size may increase by up to factor of two as a result of the effects related to the disc thickness and the irradiation from the central source. Accounting for these effects reduces the estimate of the neutron star magnetic moment by a factor of several.
Magnetorotational Instability Driven Accretion in Protoplanetary Disks

Abstract:The gas dynamics in protoplanetary disks (PPDs) is strongly affected by non-ideal MHD effects. Using a complex chemical reaction network with standard prescriptions for X-ray and cosmic-ray ionizations, as well as the most up-to-date results from numerical simulations, we study the non-ideal MHD effects on the magnetorotational instability (MRI) and angular momentum transport in PPDs. We first show that no matter grains are included or not, the recombination time is always shorter than the orbital time in the bulk of PPDs, justifying the validity of local ionization equilibrium. The full conductivity tensor at different disk radii and heights is evaluated, with the MRI active region determined by requiring that (1) the Ohmic Elsasser number be greater than 1; (2) the ratio of gas to magnetic pressure beta be greater than beta_min(Am) as identified by Bai & Stone (2011), where Am is the Elsasser number for ambipolar diffusion. With full flexibility as to the magnetic field strength, we provide a general framework for estimating the MRI-driven accretion rate M_dot and the magnetic field strength in the MRI-active layer. We find that the MRI-active layer always exists at any disk radii as long as the magnetic field in PPDs is sufficiently weak. However, the optimistically predicted M_dot in the inner disk (r=1-10 AU) appears insufficient to account for the observed range of accretion rate in PPDs (around 1e-8M_Sun/yr) even in the grain-free calculation, and the presence of solar abundance sub-micron grains further reduces M_dot by one to two orders of magnitude. Our results suggest that stronger sources of ionization, and/or additional mechanisms such as magnetized wind are needed to explain the observed accretion rates in PPDs. In contrast, our predicted M_dot is on the order of 1e-9M_Sun/yr in the outer disk, consistent with the observed accretion rates in transitional disks. (Abridged)
On the limit cycle instability in magnetized accretion discs

Abstract:Observational evidence accumulated over the past decade indicates that accretion discs in X-ray binaries are viscously stable unless they accrete very close to the Eddington limit. This is at odds with the most basic standard accretion disc theory, but could be explained by either having the discs to be much cooler whereby they are not radiation pressure dominated, or by a more sophisticated viscosity law. Here we argue that the latter is taking place in practice, on the basis of a stability analysis that assumes that the magneto-rotational-instability (MRI) responsible for generating the turbulent stresses inside the discs is also the source for a magnetically dominated corona. We show that observations of stable discs in the high/soft states of black hole binaries, on the one hand, and of the strongly variable microquasar GRS 1915+105 on the other, can all be explained if the magnetic turbulent stresses inside the disc scale proportionally to the geometric mean of gas and total pressure with a constant of proportionality (viscosity parameter) having a value of a few times 10^{-2}. Implications for bright AGN are also briefly discussed

Spin equilibrium in strongly-magnetized accreting stars

Abstract:Strongly magnetized accreting stars are often hypothesized to be in `spin equilibrium' with their surrounding accretion flows, which requires that the accretion rate changes more slowly than it takes the star to reach spin equilibrium. This is not true for most magnetically accreting stars, which have strongly variable accretion outbursts on time-scales much shorter than the time it would take to reach spin equilibrium. This paper examines how accretion outbursts affect the time a star takes to reach spin equilibrium and its final equilibrium spin period. I consider several different models for angular momentum loss -- either carried away in an outflow, lost to a stellar wind, or transferred back to the accretion disc (the `trapped disc'). For transient sources, the outflow scenario leads to significantly longer times to reach spin equilibrium ($\sim$10x), and shorter equilibrium spin periods than would be expected from spin equilibrium arguments, while the `trapped disc' does not. The results suggest that disc trapping plays a significant role in the spin evolution of strongly magnetic stars, with some caveats for young stellar objects.

Abstract:Most astrophysical accretion disks are likely to be warped. In X-ray binaries the spin evolution of an accreting neutron star is critically dependent on the interaction between the neutron star magnetic field and the accretion disk. There have been extensive investigations on the accretion torque exerted by a coplanar disk that is magnetically threaded by the magnetic field lines from the neutron stars, but relevant works on warped/tilted accretion disks are still lacking. In this paper we develop a simplified two-component model, in which the disk is comprised of an inner coplanar part and an outer, tilted part. Based on standard assumption on the formation and evolution of the toroidal magnetic field component, we derive the dimensionless torque and show that a warped/titled disk is more likely to spin up the neutron star compared with a coplanar disk.We also discuss the possible influence of various initial parameters on the torque.
Disk Instability in Wide Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries

Abstract:Conditions for disk instability in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) have been recently considered with X-ray irradiation of the disk included. Conservative evolution was generally assumed, which, however, fails in wide LMXBs with a neutron star primary (NLMXBs). If the orbital period of an LMXB is long enough, the mass transfer rate becomes super-Eddington, and the evolution is likely to be nonconservative. Adopting the Eddington limited accretion hypothesis, we have calculated the evolution of NLMXBs driven by nuclear expansion of the secondary, and obtained a modified boundary between persistent and transient behavior in NLMXBs. We briefly discuss the applications to low-mass binary radio pulsars (LMBPs) and suggest a new scenario for the progenitor system of the bursting X-ray pulsar GRO J1744-28.
