Abstract:We show that a positive feedback loop between sodium current inactivation and wave-front ramp-up speed causes a saddle-node bifurcation to result in bistable planar and spiral waves in electrically excitable media, in which both slow and fast waves are triggered by different stimulation protocols. Moreover, the two types of spiral wave conduction may interact to give rise to more complex spiral wave dynamics. The transitions between different spiral wave behaviors via saddle-node bifurcation can be a candidate mechanism for transitions widely seen in cardiac arrhythmias and neural diseases.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal dynamics of spiral tip and the evolution of spiral wave induced by external periodic modulation has been investigated in a generic excitable model. Tip dynamics of spiral wave depending on the frequency and strength of the external modulation is revealed by the meandering size variable R-x of the tip trajectory. Different effects of frequency and strength on spiral dynamics are observed and the corresponding mechanisms are explained. Finally, we can eliminate spiral wave out of the boundary successfully by suitably choosing the frequency and the strength of the external periodic modulation.

Abstract:In this paper we have systematically investigated the fundamental structure and the reproduction of spiral wave in a two-dimensional excitable lattice. A periodically rotating spiral wave is introduced as the model to reproduce spiral wave artificially. Interestingly, by using the dominant phase-advanced driving analysis method, the fundamental structure containing the loop structure and the wave propagation paths has been revealed, which can expose the periodically rotating orbit of spiral tip and the charity of spiral wave clearly. Furthermore, the fundamental structure is utilized as the core for artificial spiral wave. Additionally, the appropriate parameter region, in which the artificial spiral wave can be reproduced, is studied. Finally, we discuss the robustness of artificial spiral wave to defects.

Abstract:Spiral waves are striking self-organized coherent structures that organize spatio-temporal dynamics in dissipative, spatially extended systems. In this paper, we provide a conceptual approach to various properties of spiral waves. Rather than studying existence in a specific equation, we study properties of spiral waves in general reaction-diffusion systems. We show that many features of spiral waves are robust and to some extent independent of the specific model analyzed. To accomplish this, we present a suitable analytic framework, spatial radial dynamics, that allows us to rigorously characterize features such as the shape of spiral waves and their eigenfunctions, properties of the linearization, and finite-size effects. We believe that our framework can also be used to study spiral waves further and help analyze bifurcations, as well as provide guidance and predictions for experiments and numerical simulations. From a technical point of view, we introduce non-standard function spaces for the well-posedness of the existence problem which allow us to understand properties of spiral waves using dynamical systems techniques, in particular exponential dichotomies. Using these pointwise methods, we are able to bring tools from the analysis of one-dimensional coherent structures such as fronts and pulses to bear on these inherently two-dimensional defects.

Abstract:Abstract Spiral waves are a well-known and intensively studied dynamic phenomenon in excitable media of various types. Most studies have considered an excitable medium with a single stable resting state. However, spiral waves can be maintained in an excitable medium with bistability. Our calculations, performed using the widely used Barkley model, clearly show that spiral waves in the bistability region exhibit unique properties. For example, a spiral wave can either rotate around a core that is in an unexcited state, or the tip of the spiral wave describes a circular trajectory located inside an excited region. The boundaries of the parameter regions with positive and ‘negative’ cores have been defined numerically and analytically evaluated. It is also shown that the creation of a positive or ‘negative’ core may depend on the initial conditions, which leads to hysteresis of spiral waves. In addition, the influence of gradient flow on the dynamics of the spiral wave, which is related to the tension of the scroll wave filaments in a three-dimensional medium, is studied.

Abstract:A spiral wave is a macroscopic dynamic of excitable media that plays an important role in several distinct systems, including the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, seizures in the brain, and lethal arrhythmia in the heart. Because spiral wave dynamics can exhibit a wide spectrum of behaviors, its precise quantification can be challenging. Here we present a hybrid geometric and information-theoretic approach to quantifying spiral wave dynamics. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by applying it to numerical simulations of a two-dimensional excitable medium with different numbers and spatial patterns of spiral waves. We show that, by defining information flow over the excitable medium, hidden coherent structures emerge that effectively quantify the information transport underlying spiral wave dynamics. Most importantly, we find that some coherent structures become more clearly defined over a longer observation period. These findings validate our approach to quantitatively characterize spiral wave dynamics by focusing on information transport. Our approach is computationally efficient and is applicable to many excitable media of interest in distinct physical, chemical and biological systems. Our approach could ultimately contribute to an improved therapy of clinical conditions such as seizures and cardiac arrhythmia by identifying potential targets of interventional therapies.

Frozen State of Spiral Waves in Excitable Media

Abstract:It has long been observed in experiments that frozen state of spiral waves can spontaneously appear in both excitable and oscillatory media, in which several spiral waves coexist and are well separated by thin walls (shocks). In this work, we study the global structure of frozen state of spiral waves in excitable media and find that different from stationary shocks in oscillatory media, in excitable media the shock dynamics actually depends on the status of single spiral, which is also determined by the system parameter, i.e., the shock line can be stationary if the single spiral is rigidly rotating, whereas it can wiggle if the single spiral is meandering, and the wiggling amplitude increases with the degree of meandering. We also find the stationary structure of shock line can still be well predicted by a previous theory, which has been developed for the frozen state of spiral waves in oscillatory media. All these findings are generic and expected to be verified in experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a geometrical theory for waves in excitable reacting media. Using singular perturbation arguments and dispersion of traveling plane wave trains, we derive an approximate theory of wave front propagation which has strong resemblance to the geometrical diffraction theory of high frequency waves in hyperbolic systems, governed by the eikonal equation. Using this theory, we study the effect of curvature on waves in excitable media, specifically, rotating spiral patterns in planar regions. From this theory we are able to determine the frequency and wavelength for spiral patterns in excitable, nonoscillatory media.

Abstract:To address the problem of how cardiac muscle contraction affects the dynamics of rotating spiral waves, spiral breakup induced by mechanical deformation in excitable media is studied in two partial-differential-equation models. It is shown that spirals begin to break up at omega=0.5 omega(0) when we increase the amplitude of the mechanical deformation gradually. Our numerical results point to a new mechanism of transition from spirals to spatiotemporal chaos, in which the anisotropic time-dependent diffusion coefficient is essential.

Abstract:Spiral waves are ubiquitous spatiotemporal patterns that occur in various excitable systems. In cardiac tissue, the formation of these spiral waves is associated with life-threatening arrhythmias, and, therefore, it is important to study the dynamics of these waves. Tracking the trajectory of a spiral-wave tip can reveal important dynamical features of a spiral wave, such as its periodicity, and its vulnerability to instabilities. We show how to employ the data-driven spectral-decomposition method, called dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), to detect the profile a spiral tip trajectory (TT) in three settings: (1) a homogeneous medium; (2) a heterogeneous medium; and (3) with external noise. We demonstrate that the performance of DMD-based TT (DMDTT) is either comparable to or better than the conventional tip-tracking methods, such as the isopotential-intersection method (IIM) and the integral method, in the cases (1)-(3): (1) Both IIM and DMDTT capture TT patterns at small values of the image-sampling interval τ ; however, IIM is more sensitive than DMDTT to the changes in τ . (2) In a heterogeneous medium, IIM yields TT patterns, but with a background of scattered noisy points, which are suppressed in DMDTT. (3) DMDTT is more robust to external noise than IIM and is comparable in performance to the integral method. We also show that the DMDTT can detect non-trivial dynamics of spiral waves, such as their drift and the meandering; we show that DMDTT is comparable with the integral method in these cases and outperforms it if there is external noise. We show, finally, that DMD can be used to reconstruct, and hence predict, the spatiotemporal evolution of spiral waves in the models we study.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Spiral waves are considered to be one of the potential mechanisms that maintain complex arrhythmias such as atrial and ventricular fibrillation. The aim of the present study was to quantify the complex dynamics of spiral waves as the organizing manifolds of information flow at multiple scales.METHOD: We simulated spiral waves using a numerical model of cardiac excitation in a two-dimensional (2-D) lattice. We created a renormalization group by coarse graining and re-scaling the original time series in multiple spatiotemporal scales, and quantified the Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) of the information flow underlying the spiral waves. To quantify the scale-invariant structures, we compared the value of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent between the corresponding components of the 2-D lattice in each spatiotemporal scale of the renormalization group with that of the original scale.RESULTS: Both the repelling and the attracting LCS changed across the different spatial and temporal scales of the renormalization group. However, despite the change across the scales, some LCS were scale-invariant. The patterns of those scale-invariant structures were not obvious from the trajectory of the spiral waves based on voltage mapping of the lattice.CONCLUSIONS: Some Lagrangian coherent structures of information flow underlying spiral waves are preserved across multiple spatiotemporal scales.

Abstract:We analyze the way topological constraints and inhomogeneity in the excitability influence the dynamics of spiral waves on spheres and punctured spheres of excitable media. We generalize the definition of an index such that it characterizes not only each spiral but also each hole in punctured, oriented, compact, two-dimensional differentiable manifolds and show that the sum of the indices is conserved and zero. We also show that heterogeneity and geometry are responsible for the formation of various spiral wave attractors, in particular, pairs of spirals in which one spiral acts as a source and a second as a sink -- the latter similar to an antispiral. The results provide a basis for the analysis of the propagation of waves in heterogeneous excitable media in physical and biological systems.

Abstract:Spiral waves are spatial-temporal patterns that can emerge in different systems as heart tissues, chemical oscillators, ecological networks and the brain. These waves have been identified in the neocortex of turtles, rats, and humans, particularly during sleep-like states. Although their functions in cognitive activities remain until now poorly understood, these patterns are related to cortical activity modulation and contribute to cortical processing. In this work, we construct a neuronal network layer based on the spatial distribution of pyramidal neurons. Our main goal is to investigate how local connectivity and coupling strength are associated with the emergence of spiral waves. Therefore, we propose a trustworthy method capable of detecting different wave patterns, based on local and global phase order parameters. As a result, we find that the range of connection radius (R) plays a crucial role in the appearance of spiral waves. For R < 20 {\mu}m, only asynchronous activity is observed due to small number of connections. The coupling strength (gsyn ) greatly influences the pattern transitions for higher R, where spikes and bursts firing patterns can be observed in spiral and non-spiral waves. Finally, we show that for some values of R and gsyn bistable states of wave patterns are obtained.

Existence of spiral waves in oscillatory media with nonlocal coupling

Abstract:We prove existence of spiral waves in oscillatory media with nonlocal coupling. Our starting point is a nonlocal complex Ginzburg-Landau (cGL) equation, rigorously derived as an amplitude equation for integro-differential equations undergoing a Hopf bifurcation. Because this reduced equation includes higher order terms that are usually ignored in a formal derivation of the cGL, the solutions we find also correspond to solutions of the original nonlocal system. To prove existence of these patterns we use perturbation methods together with the implicit function theorem. Within appropriate parameter regions, we find that spiral wave patterns have wavenumbers, $\kappa$, with expansion $\kappa \sim C e^{-a/\varepsilon}$, where $a$ is a positive constant, $\varepsilon$ is the small bifurcation parameter, and the positive constant $C$ depends on the strength and spread of the nonlocal coupling. The main difficulty we face comes from the linear operators appearing in our system of equations. Due to the symmetries present in the system, and because the equations are posed on the plane, these maps have a zero eigenvalue embedded in their essential spectrum. Therefore, they are not invertible when defined between standard Sobolev spaces and a straightforward application of the implicit function theorem is not possible. We surpass this difficulty by redefining the domain of these operators using doubly weighted Sobolev spaces. These spaces encode algebraic decay/growth properties of functions, near the origin and in the far field, and allow us to recover Fredholm properties for these maps.

Abstract:Multiple-spiral-wave solutions of the general cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in bounded domains are considered. We investigate the effect of the boundaries on spiral motion under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, for small values of the twist parameter $q$. We derive explicit laws of motion for rectangular domains and we show that the motion of spirals becomes exponentially slow when the twist parameter exceeds a critical value depending on the size of the domain. The oscillation frequency of multiple-spiral patterns is also analytically obtained.

Abstract:Spiral dynamics controlled by a weakly localized pacing around the spiral tip is investigated. Numerical simulations show two distinct characteristics when the pacing is applied with the weak amplitude for suitable frequencies: for a rigidly rotating spiral, a transition from rigid rotation to meandering motion is observed, and for unstable spiral waves, spiral breakup can be prevented. Successfully preventing spiral breakup is relevant to the modulation of the tip trajectory induced by a localized pacing.

Abstract:We study pattern formation induced by a spiral wave developing from heterogeneities in an excitable medium. Turbulence can be suppressed by a spiral wave from the heterogeneity, forming multiple coexistent systems of regular geometrical patterns. We find that the types of these patterns depend critically on the degree of heterogeneity. The underlying mechanism is due to dispersion relation which is characterized by excitability.

Abstract:Spirals generated from the excitable media within the Barkley model is investigated under the gradient electric fields by a numerical simulation. The spiral drift and spiral break up are observed when the amplitude of the electric fields is modulated by a constant signal or a chaotic signal. It is also verified that, even in the presence of the white noise, the whole system can reach homogeneous states after the spiral breakup, by using an adaptive strategy.

Abstract:We present a systematic study of spiral waves in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky re- action in a spatial open reactor, where the concentrations of sulfuric acid, sodium bromate, and malonic acid are varied. Within this parameter space, three kinds of instabilities arise: two of them, which we identify as the retracting wavefront and convective instabilities, lead to the destruction of the spiral pattern, and mark the boundaries of the spiral existence domain in parameter space. Inside this domain, there exists a region where simply rotating spirals undergo the meandering instability. Quantitative measurements of the asymptotic characteristics of sim- ple spirals provide scaling relations between the observables: the pitch varies as the square root of the period. They both diverge with simple exponents at the retracting wavefront instability. This organization, reminiscent of a second order phase transition, allows us to consider the spi- ral a critical pattern. Comparison with several models and numerical simulations indicates the validity or discrepancies of applying these theoretical approaches to our experimental results. R esum e. |N ous pr esentons une etude syst ematique des ondes spirales dans la r eaction de Belousov-Zhabotinsky en r eacteur ouvert, en fonctions des concentrations d'acide sulfurique, de bromate de sodium et d'acide malonique. Abstract:The drift behavior of spiral waves under the influence of a polarized electric field is investigated in the light that both the polarized electric field and the spiral waves possess rotation symmetry. Numerical simulations of a reaction-diffusion model show that the drift velocity of the spiral tip can be controlled by changing the polarization mode of the polarized electric field and some interesting drift phenomena are observed. When the electric field is circularly polarized and its rotation follows that of the spiral, the drift speed of the spiral tip reaches its maximal value. On the contrary, opposite rotation between the spiral and electric field locks the drift of the spiral tip. Analytical results based on the weak deformation approximation are consistent with the numerical results. We hope that our theoretical results will be observed in experiments, such as the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction.
