Abstract:The design of selective and stable catalysts is a major challenge in heterogeneous catalysis, also true for propane dehydrogenation (PDH), an on-purpose route to produce propylene. Identifying nonprecious catalysts to replace Pt used today is another formidable task. Herein, we combine kinetic simulations, high-throughput computations, machine-learning concepts, and experiments to illustrate the key parameters controlling the performance of metallic catalysts in PDH. Our decision map successfully identifies NiMo as a very promising nonprecious metal catalyst, which is experimentally proven to outperform Pt in PDH. Our framework not only validates experimentally known catalysts but also provides ways for PDH catalyst engineering from theoretical high-throughput screening. Improved Selectivity and Coke Resistance of Core-Shell Alloy Catalysts for Propane Dehydrogenation from First Principles and Microkinetic Analysis

Abstract:Microkinetic analysis combined with the results obtained from density functional theory calculations has been performed to examine the catalytic activity and selectivity of Pt-based core-shell alloy catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. Calculated results indicate that substitution of 11 late transition metals for the core region of Pt nanoparticles would significantly modify the electronic structure of the surface Pt atoms through the strain effect and charge transfer. The core-shell catalysts are found to have less negative propylene adsorption energies and higher activation energies for the dehydrogenation reactions than Pt, thus giving rise to a lower catalytic activity and a higher selectivity toward propylene. Linear chemisorption energy and transition state energy scaling relations hold very well in the present work, and the adsorption energy of propylene is identified to be a good descriptor to represent the overall kinetics. The scaling relations also suggest that a higher catalyst selectivity toward propylene can only be achieved at the expense of a lower catalytic activity for propane dehydrogenation. If a compromise is made between catalytic activity and catalyst selectivity, Co@Pt is proposed to be the best core-shell catalyst for propane dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Direct dehydrogenation of propane to propylene (PDH) is a promising route to meet the ever-growing global propylene demand, but the industrial Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from serious deactivation derived from coke deposition and sintering under harsh reaction conditions. In this work, PtZn bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated into high-silica SSZ-13 zeolites (PtZn@SSZ-13) were synthesized via a facile ligand-protected interzeolite transformation strategy. In a PDH reaction, the synthesized 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 catalyst exhibits superior catalytic performance with a propane conversion of 23.7% and a propylene selectivity of 96.8%, which is significantly better than that of PtZn supported on high-silica SSZ-13 (0.5Pt3Zn/SSZ-13). Particularly, the high catalytic activity of this catalyst can be kept during three successive oxidation–reduction cycles. Detailed characterizations including HAADF-STEM, XPS, UV–Vis, H 2 -TPR reveal that the remarkable improvement of PDH performance is attributed to the PtZn synergistic effect as well as the confinement of SSZ-13 zeolites. The DFT calculations and microkinetic simulations also evidenced that the Pt particles anchored on the Zn-doped SSZ-13 zeolite pore framework possessed obviously higher propane dehydrogenation activity, whereas the anti-coking ability of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 was also stronger than Pt (1 1 1) surface, demonstrating the superior performance of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13.

Abstract:Platinum-based bimetallic nanoparticles are analyzed by the application of density functional theory to a series of tetrahedral Pt3X cluster models, with element X taken from the P-block, preferably group 14, or from the D-block around group 10. Almost identical cluster geometries allow a systematic investigation of electronic effects induced by different elements X. Choosing the propane-to-propene conversion as the desired dehydrogenation reaction, we provide estimates for the activity and selectivity of the various catalysts based on transition state theory. No significant Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi-relation could be found for the given reaction. A new descriptor, derived from an energy decomposition analysis, captures the effect of element X on the rate-determining step of the first hydrogen abstraction. Higher activities than obtained for pure Pt4 clusters are predicted for Pt alloys containing Ir, Sn, Ge and Si, with Pt3Ir showing particularly high selectivity.
Dual Pt Atoms Stabilized by an Optimized Coordination Environment for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Tailoring atomically dispersed catalysts by various methods has been the subject of intense current research in heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, the structural stability and propane dehydrogenation performance of PtTiO2 catalysts with single, dual, and triple Pt atoms doped on the reduced TiO2 surface have been examined. Experimental results indicate the atomically dispersed Pt is thermally very stable and shows exceptionally high activity (TOFpropane = 4.93 s(-1)) and selectivity (similar to 98.5 %) for the dehydrogenation reaction. The recently developed machine-learning-based SSW-NN method is then employed to explore the global potential energy surface of the atomically dispersed Pt atom-doped TiO2, which suggests that the single and dual Pt atoms can be tightly held by the vacancies created on the reduced transition-metal oxide, as confirmed by DFT + U calculated energetics. After that, advanced characterization techniques are used in conjunction with microkinetic analysis to establish the quantitative structure-activity relationships. It is found that the dual-Pt-atom structure with two Pt atoms embedded in adjacent Ti and O vacancies is the only active ensemble that dramatically promotes the C-H bond activation and hydrogen recombination, as compared to single Pt atoms accommodated by either Ti or O vacancies. These results provide new and direct evidence in support of the idea that specific function can be imparted to specific active sites by tuning their coordination environments, which makes it possible to tailor the catalytic properties of metal oxides to a particular reaction such as propane dehydrogenation.

Abstract:The alloy effect with post-transition metals (Sn, Ga and Bi) were investigated for Pt and Ni catalysts during the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction using density functional theory calculations and descriptor-based microkinetic analysis. Alloying with Sn and Bi increases the propylene selectivity of Pt and Ni catalysts at the expense of activity, especially, Bi alloys exhibit the highest propylene selectivity among all catalysts. Ni 3 Ga outperforms Ni in both PDH activity and propylene selectivity. The formation energies of C 3 H 6 and H ( EC3H6 and E H ) were identified as two activity descriptors, the former of which can also serve as the selectivity descriptor. Further investigation on the structure-activity relationship indicated at least two descriptors, one geometric parameter (the normalized atom radius) and one electronic parameter (such as d-band center, d-band width, electronegativity), were required to depict the PDH reaction on Pt and Ni-based alloys.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a commercial propylene production technology that has received much attention, but high reaction temperatures result in a decrease of propylene selectivity and catalyst stability. This paper describes a single-site [PtZn4] catalyst by assembling atomically ordered intermetallic alloy (IMA) as a selective and ultrastable PDH catalyst. The catalyst enables more than 95% of propylene selectivity from 520°C to 620°C. No obvious deactivation is observed within the 160-h test, superior to PtSn/Al2O3 and state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts. Based on in situ X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, and density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the surface [PtZn4] ensembles in PtZn IMAs serve as the key active site structures, wherein the geometry-isolated and electron-rich Pt1 site in [PtZn4] ensembles readily promotes the first and second C–H cleavage of propane but inhibits further dehydrogenation of surface-bounded propylene. This significantly improves the selectivity and stability by prohibiting coke side reactions.

Abstract:The greenhouse gas CO2 is a promising soft oxidant for the oxidative dehydrogenation of light alkanes. However, the occurrence of side reactions including cracking, hydrogenolysis, and reforming results in lower olefin yields compared with direct dehydrogenation. We report that Pt-M (M = Sn/In/Zn) bimetallic catalysts on non-redox-active silica support can break the equilibrium limit of direct propane dehydrogenation using CO2 as a co-reactant to consume the hydrogen formed in propane dehydrogenation. Unlike the commonly postulated direct CO2-assisted dehydrogenation mechanism, we confirm that CO2-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) proceeds in two tandem steps on these bimetallic catalysts, i.e., propane dehydrogenation and reverse water-gas shift, with the latter being the rate-determining step. In situ X-ray absorption studies and density functional theory calculations suggest that the PtmMn-MOx (e.g., Pt3Sn-SnOx) interfaces are likely active sites.

Bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite with enhanced stability for propane dehydrogenation

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has been an outstanding technique with a bright prospect, which can meet the growing global demand for propylene. However, undesired side reactions result in the deactivation of the Pt-based catalysts, which contribute to the insufficient lifetime of the catalysts. Herein, we describe a novel catalyst by encapsulating bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite for efficient dehydrogenation of propane, which synergizes the confinement of zeolites and the geometric and electronic effects on Pt species for enhancing the catalyst stability. The introduction of bimetallic additives efficiently promotes the dispersion of platinum and the electron transfer between Pt species and the additives, which greatly prolongs the lifetime of the catalysts. Particularly, no obvious deactivation is observed on 0.2Pt0.3Co0.5CuK@S-1 after 93 h on stream with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 5.4 h-1, revealing an ultralow deactivation constant of 0.0011 h-1 (t = 909 h). The formation rate of propylene still maintains at a high value of 407 mol gPt-1 h-1 (WHSV = 21.6 h-1) at 580 ℃ even after on pure propane stream for 42 h. The catalyst with the bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite reveals ultra-high activity and stability for PDH, which is ascribed to the highly dispersed Pt species and the stabilization effect of bimetallic additives on Pt species.

Abstract:Recently, Pt-based bimetallic nanoparticles have drawn much attention because of their great catalytic performance and wide applications in diverse fields. In this work, we report that bimetallic Pt–In nanoparticles with uniform size distribution and controllable composition can be synthesized through a one-step, facile colloidal approach. Various characterization tools such as XRD, TEM, XPS, and synchrotron techniques have been used to characterize the as-obtained nanoparticles. It is demonstrated that the Pt and In elements are homogeneously distributed in the whole nanoparticle. The bimetallic Pt–In nanoparticles have shown great catalytic performance, including high activity, high selectivity, and high stability, for the propane dehydrogenation reaction to produce propene, one of the most important chemicals. The excellent catalytic performance makes Pt–In bimetallic nanoparticles promising catalysts in future industrial application.

Abstract:Supported platinum-tin over various oxide supports have been widely recognized as the efficient propane dehydrogenation catalysts due to their excellent activity, C3H6 selectivity and stability after oxidative regeneration. The nature of the active species of the Pt-Sn catalysts is still under debate. Here, by controlling the formation of Pt-Sn chloride complexes during the impregnation stage, we managed to tune spatial distribution of Pt and Sn species over Al2O3 and further influence the degree of alloying between reduced Pt and Sn. The structure characterization revealed the co-impregnation method tend to generate PtSn alloy active site, while sequential impregnation of Pt on pre-synthesized Sn/Al2O3 tend to form Sn partially modification of Pt. Performance evaluation demonstrated that the Pt clusters partially modified by reduced Sn exhibited much higher activity and longer life-time than PtSn alloy counterparts under similar C3H6 selectivity. With further optimization, the Pt-Sn/Al2O3 prepared by sequential impregnation method achieved over 64.1 μmol/gcat/h propylene formation rate at the 30% propane conversion with the C3H6 selectivity exceeding 99%.

Abstract:Pt-based catalysts are the typical industrial catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH), which still suffer from insufficient long-term durability due to the structural instability and coke deposition. A commercial γ-Al2O3 supported thermally robust sub-nanometer Pt2In3 intermetallic catalyst with atomically ordered structure and rigorously separated Pt single atoms was fabricated, which showed outstanding robustness in 240 h long-term operation at 600 °C with the deactivation rate constant k d as low as 0.00078 h−1, ranking among the lowest reported values. Based on various in situ characterizations and theoretical calculations, it was proved that the catalyst stability not only resulted from the separated Pt single-atom sites but also significantly affected by the distance of adjacent Pt atoms. An increasing distance to 3.25 Å in the Pt2In3 could induce a weak π-adsorption configuration of propylene on Pt sites, which facilitated the desorption of propylene and restrained the side reactions like coking.

Abstract:By using a descriptor-based microkinetic analysis combined with results from density functional theory calculations over eight transition-metal (including Ni, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au) terrace and stepped surfaces, intermetallic compounds have been screened to search for inexpensive and environmentally friendly propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalysts with enhanced catalytic performance. Based on the scaling relations, the formation energies of ethyl on terrace and methylidyne on stepped surfaces are identified as two descriptors to represent the energetics of other reaction intermediates and transition sates. The derived PDH activity and propylene selectivity volcano curves not only provide a rational interpretation of the previously experimentally reported catalyst candidates, but also predict several unexpected binary combinations by screening 1482 A(3)B(1) and 741 A(1)B(1) intermetallic compounds. The non-precious Fe3Ga1 is then synthesized and evaluated. Its improved propylene selectivity and catalytic stability with respect to those of the Pt catalyst validates the theoretical predictions experimentally. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Effect of Group IB Metals on the Dehydrogenation of Propane to Propylene over Anti-Sintering Pt/MgAl2O4

Abstract:Anti-sintering platinum-based catalyst for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is promising to avoid corrosive oxychlorination re-dispersion of sintered Pt during coke combustion. Herein, we report an anti sintering Pt/MgAl2O4 catalyst and optimizations on its activity for PDH with group IB metals (Cu, Ag and Au). Using a suite of characterizations including BET, H-2 chemisorption, XRD, STEM, CO-DRIFTS, XANES, XPS, TG/DTA, TPO, C3H6-TPD and TPSR of C3H6 with H-2, we reveal that Cu and Ag dilute the surface Pt atoms and donate electron to Pt while the case for Pt-Au is inverse. As a result, significant enhancements in propane conversion and propylene selectivity were obtained on the Pt-Cu/MgAl2O4 and Pt-Ag/MgAl2O4 catalysts. The Pt-Cu/MgAl2O4 exhibited excellent C3H6 yield and regeneration stability, presumably due to the formation of intermetallic compounds and little phase segregation during cyclic dehydrogenation-regeneration runs. Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene, but the widely used Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from short-term stability and unsatisfactory propylene selectivity. Herein, we develop a ligand-protected direct hydrogen reduction method for encapsulating subnanometer bimetallic Pt-Zn clusters inside silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite. The introduction of Zn species significantly improved the stability of the Pt clusters and gave a superhigh propylene selectivity of 99.3 % with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 3.6-54 h-1 and specific activity of propylene formation of 65.5 mol C 3 H 6 gPt -1 h-1 (WHSV=108 h-1 ) at 550 °C. Moreover, no obvious deactivation was observed over PtZn4@S-1-H catalyst even after 13000 min on stream (WHSV=3.6 h-1 ), affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.001 h-1 , which is 200 times lower than that of the PtZn4/Al2 O3 counterpart under the same conditions. We also show that the introduction of Cs+ ions into the zeolite can improve the regeneration stability of catalysts, and the catalytic activity kept unchanged after four continuous cycles.

Abstract:The catalytic dehydrogenation of light alkanes over Pt catalysts is generally accepted to follow a reverse Horiuti-Polanyi mechanism. Using a microkinetic analysis in combination with results from density functional theory calculations, we show that although propane dehydrogenation (PDH) occurs by two successive dehydrogenation steps on terraces, an unexpected non-reverse Horiuti-Polanyi mechanism accounts for more than half the propylene production at the under-coordinated active sites that dominate the kinetics of PDH. The main reaction is composed of three dehydrogenation steps that have two beta-H atoms and one alpha-H atom removed from propane, followed by the hydrogenation of CH3CCH2; starting from this species, the formation of propylene and byproducts proceed by way of two parallel competing reactions. The proposed mechanism has been verified by exploring several key and general aspects of the kinetic behavior observed in the dehydrogenation of light alkanes, and it is found that only when adsorbate-adsorbate interactions are taken into consideration can the experimentally determined kinetics be properly reproduced. Increasing the H-2 partial pressure from low values favors an increase in the coverage of free sites due to the gasification of adsorbed coke precursors, which in turn gives rise to lowered energy barriers for C-H bond breaking, thereby achieving an increased propane consumption rate. As the H-2/C3H8 ratio increases, the rate of propylene production first goes up and then declines, and a maximum is observed at a H-2/C3H8 ratio of 1.33, which occurs when the negative effect of the increased free 4-fold hollow sites that bring about deep dehydrogenation begins to dominate the positive effect of the increased free step sites that are responsible for activating propane. The mechanism formulated here proves to be valid even if the temperature, pressure, or the H-2/C3H8 ratio is varied and hence provides a foundation for the rational design of metal and alloy catalysts for light alkane dehydrogenation.
Atomically dispersed Pt in ordered PtSnZn intermetallic with Pt−Sn and Pt−Zn pairs for selective propane dehydrogenation

Abstract:With the surge of shale gas, propane dehydrogenation becomes increasingly important to synthesize propylene. Herein, a new type of ordered PtSnZn intermetallic clusters (∼0.9 nm) supported on Al 2 O 3 was synthesized by a stepwise approach including electrostatic adsorption and temperature-programmed reduction. The structure of the PtSnZn clusters results from a kinetically controlled process, and Pt atoms in the PtSnZn clusters are well isolated by Sn and Zn with Pt−Sn and Pt−Zn pairs. The PtSnZn/Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance for propane dehydrogenation, which achieves ∼100% propylene selectivity and keeps a high propane conversion (>40%) during stability testing. The catalytic performance of PtSnZn/Al 2 O 3 is also significantly higher than that of Pt/Al 2 O 3 , PtSn/Al 2 O 3 , and PtZn/Al 2 O 3 . Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that the Sn 5p and Zn 4s orbitals are hybridized with Pt 5d by forming Pt−Sn and Pt−Zn pairs, which leads to the d band center of Pt deviating from Fermi level (−2.81 eV). The shift of the Pt d band center significantly decreases the adsorption energy of propylene and prohibits further dehydrogenation, resulting in high propylene selectivity and stability.

Kinetics of Propane Dehydrogenation Based on Density Functional Theory

Abstract:Pt/Al2O3 catalyst with Pt particle size of 6 nm was prepared by ethylene glycol reduction method and the kinetics of propane dehydrogenation was then studied under atmospheric pressure and at 450-490 ℃.The apparent reaction orders for propane and hydrogen were the first and minus half,respectively,and the apparent reaction activation energy was about 80 kJ/mol.Based on Density Functional Theory(DFT) calculation,a microkinetic model was established on Pt(111) facet,where the kinetic simulation was carried out.The simulation indicated that the adsorbed hydrogen atom was the most abundant surface intermediate and that the reaction rate was limited by the second hydrogen elimination.A Langmuir-Hinshelwood Hougen-Watson(LHHW) model was subsequently obtained based on the information provided by microkinetics.Compared with conventional kinetic model,the models established in this study were superior in the reliability of the mechanism indicated by DFT calculation and the convenience of the acquisition of the kinetic parameters.The simulation also indicated that the models could well predict the experiments.
