Abstract:After several decades of intensive studies, the questions about the magnitudes of rate constants of rapid heterogeneous electron transfer (ET) and ion transfer (IT) reactions remain open. The fabrication of nanometer‐sized metal electrodes and nanopipets enabled electrochemical studies of rapid charge transfer processes at solid/liquid and liquid/liquid nanointerfaces. The nanoelectrochemical techniques offer numerous advantages such as fast mass‐transfer rate and simplified analysis of data obtained under steady‐state conditions. At the same time, kinetic data obtained at nanointerfaces may be affected by double layer effects, deviations from classical electrochemical theory, and other size‐related phenomena. Nanoelectrochemical measurements are also plagued by difficulties in characterizing nanometer‐sized interfaces and conductor/insulator boundaries. In this review, we discuss the results of fast electron and ion transfer kinetics measurements at nanointerfaces, along with related reliability problems and some approaches to fixing them.
Voltammetry at porous electrodes: A theoretical study

Abstract:Theory is presented to simulate both chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry at porous electrodes fabricated by means of electro-deposition around spherical templates. A theoretical method to extract heterogeneous rate constants for quasireversible and irreversible systems is proposed by the approximation of decoupling of the diffusion within the porous electrode and of bulk diffusion to the electrode surface.

Abstract:Despite the critical role of electron transfer kinetics in determining the energy efficiency and the power density of a redox flow battery (RFB), there has not been much progress quantifying the kinetics on commercial porous carbon electrodes, the most common RFB electrodes with no immediate planar-electrode counterparts for cyclic voltammetry (CV) analyses. Here, we tackle this challenge by encapsulating porous carbon electrodes in epoxy, whose cross-sections are used for CV analyses. These electrodes display behaviors of micro-electrodes with length scales characteristic of fibers in the original porous structures. We thereby characterize the kinetics of ferricyanide reduction and show that its rate constants on carbon paper and pre-treated carbon felt are at the order of 10−4 cm s−1, near the low end of values reported on glassy carbon. On pre-treated carbon paper, the rate is ten times slower, attributed to the low electrocatalytic activity of the new surface accessible only after the heat treatment. We corroborate these findings with symmetric RFB tests. The method developed here provides a much-needed assessment of kinetics on porous carbon electrodes free from the impacts of mass transports in the pores, enabling the identification of performance-determining factors of RFB electrodes.

Abstract:Porous carbons represent an important group of electrode materials for electrochemical applications due to their high specific surface area, good conductivity, and intrinsic porosity. However, the often-neglected influence of the electrode porosity on the electrochemical results may lead to wrong interpretation of data. The aim of this work is therefore to provide comprehensive understanding of the effects of electrode porosity on cyclic voltammetry (CV) – a technique which is frequently used for initial characterization of novel electrode materials. Our approach consists of simulating experimental results, observed for the redox-reactions of [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4− at porous CNT thin-film electrodes, with a mathematical model. The results demonstrate that the main difference between planar and porous electrode is the additional charge transferred in the porous electrode domain, which has the decisive contribution to the overall faradaic current at high scan rates. To further verify the applied model, the porosity of the porous CNT film is varied on purpose by changing the Nafion-Carbon-ratio (NCR). We are able to determine the electrochemically available pore volume (ECPV) of the electrode, which is strongly affected by the NCR, and correlate changes in the ECPV with changes in the scan-rate dependent CV. Moreover, we implement an approach for determination of reaction rate constants at porous electrodes, which was verified by simulated CV data. Evaluation of the experimental results shows that the reaction rate constant of the porous CNT material actually has the same order of magnitude as the planar glassy carbon substrate.

A Thin-Layer Diffusion Model-Based Intelligent Cyclic Voltammetry Analysis Method to Capture Electrochemical Parameters in Flow Batteries

Abstract:Contrary to the conventional approach that utilizes the planar electrode model to achieve the electrochemical parameters of the electrode in flow batteries, this work proposes an intelligent cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis method to accurately capture the electrochemical parameters of the carbon-based porous electrode: (i) the transient diffusion process is elaborated by the Fick's second law; (ii) the thin-layer diffusion boundary condition is determined based on the structural characteristics of porous electrodes; (iii) CV response on the porous electrode is obtained by the Bulter-Volmer equation in assocition with the Fick's first law; and (iv) the electrochemical parameters of the porous electrode are automatically extracted from the experimental data via the genetic algorithm. The feasibility of the intelligent CV analysis method is proven by studying the electrochemical parameters including the diffusion coefficient D and the standard rate constant k0 of [Fe(CN)6]4−/[Fe(CN)6]3−. Additionally, this analysis method is applied to investigate the vanadium redox flow battery by providing accurate electrochemical parameters for the 3D multi-physics model to predict the charge/discharge performance at different current densities. The simulation results demonstrate a maximum relative error of 2% in comparison to the experimental data, suggesting the good reliability in developing the advanced model. The proposed intelligent CV analysis method provides a potential application in accurately capturing the electrochemical parameters in other electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices.
Operando Electrochemical Kinetics in Particulate Porous Electrodes by Quantifying the Mesoscale Spatiotemporal Heterogeneities

Abstract:Electrochemical energy systems rely on particulate porous electrodes to store or convert energies. While the three‐dimensional (3D) porous structures are introduced to maximize the interfacial area for better overall performance of the system, spatiotemporal heterogeneities arising from materials thermodynamics are localizing the charge transfer processes onto a limited portion of the available interfaces. Here, a simple but precise method is demonstrated to directly track and analyze the operando (i.e., local and working) interfaces on the mesoscale in a practical graphite porous electrode to obtain the true local current density, which turns out to be two orders of magnitude higher than the globally averaged current density adopted by existing studies. The results shed light on the long‐standing discrepancies in kinetics parameters derived from electroanalytical measurements and from first principle predictions. Contradictory to prevailing beliefs, the electrochemical dynamics are not controlled by the solid‐state diffusion process once the spatiotemporal reaction heterogeneities emerge.

Abstract:Materials that undergo ion-insertion coupled electron transfer are important for energy storage, energy conversion, and optoelectronics applications. Cyclic voltammetry is a powerful technique to understand electrochemical kinetics. However, the interpretation of the kinetic behavior of ion insertion electrodes with analytical solutions developed for ion blocking electrodes has led to confusion about their rate-limiting behavior. The purpose of this manuscript is to demonstrate that the cyclic voltammetry response of thin film electrode materials undergoing solid-solution ion insertion without significant Ohmic polarization can be explained by well-established models for finite diffusion. To do this, we utilize an experimental and simulation approach to understand the kinetics of Li + insertion-coupled electron transfer into a thin film material (Nb 2 O 5 ). We demonstrate general trends for the peak current vs scan rate behavior, with the latter parameter elevated to an exponent between limiting values of 1 and 0.5, depending on the solid-state diffusion characteristics of the film (diffusion coefficient, film thickness) and the experiment timescale (scan rate). We also show that values < 0.5 are possible depending on the cathodic potential limit. Our results will be useful to fundamentally understand and guide the selection and design of intercalation materials for multiple applications.

Abstract:Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), characterized by its non-destructive and in-situ nature, plays a crucial role in comprehending the thermodynamic and kinetic processes occurring with Li-ion batteries. However, there is a lack of consistent and coherent physical interpretations for the EIS of porous electrodes. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct thorough investigations into the underlying physical mechanisms of EIS. Herein, by employing reference electrode in batteries, we revisit the associated physical interpretation of EIS at different frequency. Combining different battery configurations, temperature-dependent experiments, and elaborated distribution of relaxation time analysis, we find that the ion transport in porous electrode channels and pseudo-capacitance behavior dominate the high-frequency and mid-frequency impedance arcs, respectively. This work offers a perspective for the physical interpretation of EIS and also sheds light on the understanding of EIS characteristics in other advanced energy storage systems.

Abstract:Theoretical simulations of electrocatalysis are vital for understanding the mechanism of the electrochemical process at the atomic level.It can help to reveal the in-situ structures of electrode surfaces and establish the microscopic mechanism of elec-trocatalysis,thereby solving the problems such as electrode oxidation and corrosion.However,there are still many problems in the theoretical electrochemical simulations,including the solvation effects,the electric double layer,and the structural transformation of electrodes.Here we review recent advances of theoretical methods in electrochemical modeling,in particular,the double reference approach,the periodic continuum solvation model based on the modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation(CM-MPB),and the stochastic surface walking method based on the machine learning potential energy surface(SSW-NN).The case studies of oxygen reduction reaction by using CM-MPB and SSW-NN are presented.
Charge Transfer Kinetics at the Solid-Solid Interface in Porous Electrodes

Abstract:Interfacial charge transfer is widely assumed to obey Butler-Volmer kinetics. For certain liquid-solid interfaces, Marcus-Hush-Chidsey theory is more accurate and predictive, but it has not been applied to porous electrodes. Here we report a simple method to extract the charge transfer rates in carbon-coated LiFePO4 porous electrodes from chronoamperometry experiments, obtaining curved Tafel plots that contradict the Butler-Volmer equation but fit the Marcus-Hush-Chidsey prediction over a range of temperatures. The fitted reorganization energy matches the Born solvation energy for electron transfer from carbon to the iron redox site. The kinetics are thus limited by electron transfer at the solid-solid (carbon-LixFePO4) interface, rather than by ion transfer at the liquid-solid interface, as previously assumed. The proposed experimental method generalizes Chidsey's method for phase-transforming particles and porous electrodes, and the results show the need to incorporate Marcus kinetics in modeling batteries and other electrochemical systems.

Diffuse charge and Faradaic reactions in porous electrodes

Abstract:Porous electrodes instead of flat electrodes are widely used in electrochemical systems to boost storage capacities for ions and electrons, to improve the transport of mass and charge, and to enhance reaction rates. Existing porous electrode theories make a number of simplifying assumptions: (i) The charge-transfer rate is assumed to depend only on the local electrostatic potential difference between the electrode matrix and the pore solution, without considering the structure of the double layer (DL) formed in between; (ii) the charge-transfer rate is generally equated with the salt-transfer rate not only at the nanoscale of the matrix-pore interface, but also at the macroscopic scale of transport through the electrode pores. In this paper, we extend porous electrode theory by including the generalized Frumkin-Butler-Volmer model of Faradaic reaction kinetics, which postulates charge transfer across the molecular Stern layer located in between the electron-conducting matrix phase and the plane of closest approach for the ions in the diffuse part of the DL. This is an elegant and purely local description of the charge-transfer rate, which self-consistently determines the surface charge and does not require consideration of reference electrodes or comparison with a global equilibrium. For the description of the DLs, we consider the two natural limits: (i) the classical Gouy-Chapman-Stern model for thin DLs compared to the macroscopic pore dimensions, e.g., for high-porosity metallic foams (macropores >50 nm) and (ii) a modified Donnan model for strongly overlapping DLs, e.g., for porous activated carbon particles (micropores <2 nm). Our theory is valid for electrolytes where both ions are mobile, and it accounts for voltage and concentration differences not only on the macroscopic scale of the full electrode, but also on the local scale of the DL. The model is simple enough to allow us to derive analytical approximations for the steady-state and early transients. We also present numerical solutions to validate the analysis and to illustrate the evolution of ion densities, pore potential, surface charge, and reaction rates in response to an applied voltage.

Abstract:Porous materials are emerging recyclable electrocatalysts that exhibit many advantages such as rich pore environments, tunable structures and functionalities, and large specific surface areas. However, the research of these materials in organic electrocatalysis is promising but only emerged recently. In this review, we summarized the latest research progress of porous carbon materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) in organic electrocatalysis, focusing on their structural optimization, electrochemical performance, and reaction mechanisms. In addition, the main challenges and future directions in this field were also discussed. We hope that this review can inspire more research interest of synthetic organic chemists in the development of porous electrocatalysts in organic electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Due to the high charge transfer efficiency compared to that of non-porous materials, porous electrodes with larger surface area and thinner solid pore walls have been widely applied in the lithium-ion battery field. Since the capacity and charge-discharge efficiency of batteries are closely related to the microstructure of porous materials, a conceptually simple and computationally efficient cellular automata (CA) framework is proposed to reconstruct the porous electrode structure and simulate the reaction-diffusion process under the irregular solid-liquid boundary in this work. This framework is consisted of an electrode generating model and a reaction-diffusion model. Electrode structures with specific geometric properties, i.e., porosity, surface area, size distribution, and eccentricity distribution can be constructed by the electrode generating model. The reaction-diffusion model is exemplified by solving the Fick’s diffusion problem and simulating the cyclic voltammetry (CV) process. The discharging process in the lithium-ion battery are simulated through combining the above two CA models, and the simulation results are consistent with the well-known pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model. In addition, a set of electrodes with different microstructures are constructed and their reaction efficiencies are evaluated. The results indicate that there is an optimum combination of porosity and particle size for discharge efficiency. This framework is a promising one for studying the effect of electrode microstructure on battery performance due to its fully synchronous computation way, easy handled boundary conditions, and free of convergence concerns.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms and properties of various transport processes in the electrolyte, porous electrode, and at the interface between electrode and electrolyte plays a crucial role in guiding the improvement of electrolytes, materials and microstructures of electrode. Nanoscale equilibrium properties and nonequilibrium ion transport are substantially different to that in the bulk, which are difficult to observe from experiments directly. In this paper, we introduce equilibrium and no-equilibrium thermodynamics for electrolyte in porous electrodes or electrolyte–electrode interface. The equilibrium properties of electrical double layer (EDL) including the EDL structure and capacitance are discussed. In addition, classical non-equilibrium thermodynamic theory is introduced to help us understand the coupling effect of different transport processes. We also review the recent studies of nonequilibrium ion transport in porous electrode by molecular and continuum methods, among these methods, dynamic density functional theory (DDFT) shows tremendous potential as its high efficiency and high accuracy. Moreover, some opportunities for future development and application of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics in electrochemical system are prospected.
Multiscale Modification of Graphdiyne-based Electrodes and Diffusion Kinetics Analysis of Lithium Ions

Abstract:The diffusion of lithium ions is highly related to the chemical structure, packing mode, and pore size distribution of the electrode materials. In this paper, a multiscale modification strategy is performed to investigate the correlation between the chemical structure and diffusion kinetics of lithium ions in graphdiyne (GDY) based electrodes. Various electrochemical tests show consistent results that hydrogen-substituted GDY has the fastest lithium-ion diffusion rate, and the doping of Cl and F atoms with large atomic radii leads to slower lithium-ion diffusion in the system. The functional groups (H, Cl, F) introduced in the GDY-based electrodes not only regulate the pore size of the materials but also modulate the binding energy with lithium ions. chlorine-substituted GDY shows a higher diffusion coefficient than that of fluorine-substituted GDY for proper affinity to lithium. In addition, the specific surface area and the pore size distribution also collectively contribute to the differences in lithium-ion diffusion. Finally, the lithium storage mechanism of substituted GDY electrodes is explored. Our strategy sheds some light on the design and fabrication of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:In the past few decades, tremendous advances have been made in electrocatalysis due to the rational design of electrocatalysts at the nanoscale level. Further development requires engineering electrocatalysts at the atomic level, which is a grand challenge. Here, the recent advances in cation exchange strategy, which is a powerful tool for fine‐tuning atomic structure of electrocatalysts via surface faceting, heteroatom doping, defects formation, and strain modulation, are the main focus. Proper atomic structure engineering effectively adjusts the electronic structure, and thus enhances the electronic conductivity and facilitates the adsorption/desorption of reaction intermediates. By virtue, the cation exchange strategy greatly boosts the intrinsic and apparent activities of electrocatalysts and shows a great potential toward design of new energy conversion devices, such as water splitting devices and metal–air batteries. It is believed that cation exchange offers new insights and opportunities for the rational design of a new generation of electrocatalysts.

Characterization of Emerging Porous Electrode Designs with High-Fidelity Pore-Scale Models

Abstract:Porous electrodes have been widely adopted in battery applications due to their favorable properties of large surface area, abundant active reaction sites, and high permeability. Constrained by high computational costs, the porous electrodes are generally described by their established macroscopic properties in the device-scale battery models without explicitly reconstructing their geometries. This practice limited the model capability to analyze the recently developed porous electrodes with revised structures, whose macroscopic properties, such as permeability, mass transfer rate and reaction kinetics are not fully understood. Those knowledge gaps could result in uncertainties for battery performance assessment using the device-scale models. In response to such challenges, we have developed new pore-scale models to analyze those emerging porous electrodes by resolving their geometries with high fidelity. By incorporating hydrodynamics and electrochemical reaction physics, the pore-scale model can assess the battery performance without simplifying the electrode geometries. Two novel electrodes adopted recently in the redox flow battery and Li-S battery have been analyzed with the proposed method. For the redox-flow battery, the biporous electrode etched secondary pores on the carbon fibers to provide additional surface area and faster reaction kinetics. The pore-scale model resolves the secondary pore structures to the micrometer-scale and quantified the effects of those secondary pores on the electrode permeability, species transport and reaction kinetics. On the other hand, the low porosity electrodes are actively developed for the Li-S batteries, due to its reduced electrolyte intake and parasitic weight. The proposed pore-scale model has been used to analyze and optimize the electrolyte wetting behavior in those low-porosity electrodes to improve the Li-S battery efficiency. It is envisioned that the novel porous electrode design and development can be accelerated with well-characterized electrode macroscopic properties informed by our high-fidelity pore-scale models.
Interrogating Steady-State Multi-electron and Multi-step Reactions Mediated by an Electrocatalytic Heterogeneous Film

Abstract:The development of new types of heterogeneous catalysts for fuel-forming electrochemical reactions has been a subject of research focus over the past decade. Despite recent huge progress in preparations of electrocatalytic materials, such as metal organic framework (MOF) and redox polymer, understanding the underlying microscopic mechanisms at play and the key rate-limiting step is still poor due to a lack of electrochemical analysis tools. Here, complete electrokinetic models for multi-electron redox reactions for heterogeneous electrocatalysis, including a monolayer (2D) and porous 3D film, are developed to comprehensively interrogate all relevant kinetic parameters, charge transport, substrate diffusion and catalysis. Therefore, the effects of these parameters on the resulting voltammograms can be analyzed and then the characteristic properties of electrocatalytic voltammograms are identified. In addition, the foot of the wave analysis, widely used to evaluate the catalytic performance of molecular catalysts in the homogeneous system, is also applied and found to be a useful tool to characterize the kinetic mechanism of the chemical steps. Based on these electrochemical methods and analysis, the MOF systems are evaluated to address the discrepancy among these kinetic parameters reported in the literature. Further design principles for catalytic MOF films and their theoretical performance are provided. Overall, these electrochemical methods presented here provide useful and feasible tools to benchmark heterogeneous electrocatalysts and characterize the key step that limits the electrocatalytic performance of MOFs and other heterogeneous systems.

Abstract:The electric double layer (EDL) is one of the key concepts in electrochemistry, and understanding its charging kinetics is of key importance. Significant progress has been made via theoretical methods; however, it is challenging to study the ion dynamics experimentally in porous carbon electrodes under realistic conditions because of fast charge relaxation. In this work, the charging kinetics of porous carbon electrodes with different pore sizes in an aqueous electrolyte was experimentally investigated in electrolytes with various concentrations by using a cavity microelectrode. We were able to observe electrolyte depletion, and we systematically studied the key parameters that will affect the electrolyte depletion, resulting in major changes in the charging kinetics. Results showed that low concentration, high overpotential, and small carbon pore size triggered the electrolyte depletion, decreasing the charging kinetics. These findings further push our understanding of the ion dynamics of the EDL at the charged porous carbon/electrolyte interface.
