Abstract:Excavating and developing highly efficient and cost-effective nonnoble metal single-atom catalysts for electrocatalytic reactions is of paramount significance but still in its infancy. Herein, reported is a general NaCl template-assisted strategy for rationally designing and preparing a series of isolated transition metal single atoms (Fe/Co/Ni) anchored on honeycomb-like nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (M-1-HNC-T-1-T-2, M = Fe/Co/Ni, T-1 = 500 degrees C, T-2 = 850 degrees C). The resulting M-1-HNC-500-850 with M-N-4 active sites exhibits superior capability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with the half-wave potential order of Fe-1-HNC-500-850 > Co-1-HNC-500-850 > Ni-1-HNC-500-850, in which Fe-1-HNC-500-850 shows better performance than commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations reveal a choice strategy that the strong p-d-coupled spatial charge separation results the Fe-N-4 effectively merges active electrons for elevating d-band activity in a van-Hove singularity like character. This essentially generalizes an optimal electronic exchange-and-transfer (ExT) capability for boosting sluggish alkaline ORR activity. This work not only presents a universal strategy for preparing single-atom electrocatalyst to accelerate the kinetics of cathodic ORR but also provides an insight into the relationship between the electronic structure and the electrocatalytical activity.

Abstract:Heteroatom doping is considered an essential strategy to modulate the Fe-N-C catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in energy conversion technologies. However, challenges remain in achieving a singular form of heteroatom doping, i.e., asymmetrical coordination with metal sites and heteroatom doping in environmental skeleton carbons. And a low doping efficiency and inappropriate doping ratios result in the excessive use of heteroatom-containing organic additives, further limiting the achievement of sustainability. In this work, we prepared an atom-economical Fe-N-5 single-atom catalyst (SAC) with only environmental S atom doping, which was synthesized by pyrolyzing an axial imidazole-coordinated thiophene iron porphyrin precursor on PVI-functionalized carbon black. Due to the electron-donating properties of thiophene-S atoms, the intrinsic activity of the Fe-N-5 site was significantly promoted by regulating the electronic configuration through the long-range interaction, thus lowering the energy barrier of the ORR. As expected, the resultant catalyst exhibited an efficient ORR activity in alkaline media and in the aqueous zinc-air battery, with a higher half-wave potential of 0.89 V vs RHE and a maximum power density of 147 mW cm(-2) than those of 20 wt % Pt/C (E-1/2 = 0.87 V, P-max = 120 mW cm(-2)). This work provides a facile heteroatom-doping engineering approach to boost the intrinsic catalytic activity of advanced SACs in energy conversion applications.
Rational Design Synergistic Metal-Free Dual-Atom Electrocatalyst for N2 to NH3 Reaction on G-Cn: A First Principle Study

Abstract:The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for ammonia production is promising for N-2 fixation under ambient conditions. Most of the previous studies focus on transition metal-based catalysts, while the metal-free-based ones have not gotten enough attention. We designed dual-site metal-free atoms anchored on g-CN for electrocatalytic NRR based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Results indicated that the B and P atoms co-doped g-CN system exhibits excellent NRR performance with a low limiting potential of -0.18 V, superior to most metal-based catalysts. In addition, a synergistic effect induced by the hybridization of B and P atoms is proposed. Eventually, the selectivity, thermodynamical stability, and conductivity are investigated. All of these modulations make the B-P@g-CN an excellent electrocatalyst. Our work provides a novel method for electrocatalytic NRR to ammonia and promotes the development of NRR.
Engineering D-Band Center of FeN4 Moieties for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysts

Abstract:Atomically-dispersed FeN4 moieties are emerging as low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which can be applied in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Whereas, the unsatisfactory position of the d -band center from the metal sites offered by FeN4 affects the adsorption-desorption behaviors of oxygenated intermediates, further impeding the improvement of their ORR performances. Herein, we report a well-designed diatomic Fe/Zn-CNHC catalyst on a microporous hollow support. This strategy drives the position of the d-band center of Fe upward, thus making FeN4 active sites more favorable and stable during the ORR kinetic processes. The material exhibits an excellent ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.91 V and excellent stability (insignificant attenuation after 5,000 cycles), surpassing commercial Pt/C and many other single-atom catalysts. DFT calculations further indicate that the tuning effect of Zn on the d-orbital electron distribution of Fe facilitates the stretching and cleavage of Fe-O, thus accelerating the rate-determining step. This work presents a simple strategy to fabricate well-defined diatomic coordination in single-atom ORR electrocatalysts and inspires future research on developing new syntheses to control the coordination of single-atom electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A key challenge in carrying out an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the design of a highly efficient electrocatalyst that must have fast kinetics, low cost and high stability for use in an energy-conversion device (e.g. metal-air batteries). Herein, we developed a platinum-free ORR electrocatalyst with a high surface area and pore volume via a molten salt method along with subsequent KOH activation. The activation treatment not only increases the surface area to 940.8 m(2) g(-1) by generating lots of pores, but also promotes the formation of uniform Fe3C nanoclusters within the atomic dispersed Fe-N-x carbon matrix in the final material (A-FeNC). A-FeNC displays excellent activity and long-term stability for the ORR in alkaline media, and shows a greater half-wave potential (0.85 V) and faster kinetics toward four-electron ORR as compared to those of 20 wt% Pt/C (0.83 V). As a cathode catalyst for the Zn-air battery, A-FeNC presents a peak power density of 102.2 mW cm(-2), higher than that of the Pt/C constructed Zn-air battery (57.2 mW cm(-2)). The superior ORR catalytic performance of A-FeNC is ascribed to the increased exposure of active sites, active single-atom Fe-N-C centers, and enhancement by Fe3C nanoclusters.

Abstract:Developing efficient noble-metal-free catalysts for the electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions shows promise in fertilizer production and hydrogen storage. Here, as a proof-of-concept prototype, we design and implement an Fe–N/C–carbon nanotube (CNT) catalyst derived from a metal–organic framework and carbon-nanotube-based composite with built-in Fe–N3 active sites. This catalyst exhibits enhanced NRR activity with NH3 production (34.83 μg·h–1·mg–1cat.), faradaic efficiency (9.28% at −0.2 V vs RHE), selectivity, and stability in 0.1 M KOH aqueous media under mild conditions. Experimental and theoretical results both reveal that Fe–N3 species are the primary catalytically active centers for the NRR. This work provides insight into precise construction of more efficient and stable NRR electrocatalysts and further expands the possibilities of transition metal–nitrogen–carbon (M–N–C)-based nanomaterials in NRR fields.
The rational adjusting of proton-feeding by Pt-doped FeP/C hollow nanorod for promoting nitrogen reduction kinetics

Abstract:Following the guidance of nitrogenase, the natural iron-based catalysts with remarkably high activity in nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) may be a talent option to develop artificial molecular mimics. However, the electrochemical NRR process of iron-based catalysts still suffers from the high overpotential, poor lifespan, and slow reaction kinetics of the hydrogenation process. Through a controllable etching and in-situ carbonating process, a Pt-doped FeP/C hollow nanorod catalysts was fabricated. Driven by the doped Pt atom, the catalyst solves the key kinetic problem about insufficient proton feeding in the process of nitrogen reduction, and actively transfers protons to intermediates of the hydrogenation steps in NRR. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst presents the highest NH3 yield value of 10.22 μg h-1 cm-2 among multitudinous Fe based catalysts at lower potential of -0.05 V (vs. RHE) with an excellent Faraday efficiency (FE) of 15.3%, which is higher than FeP/C without the Pt-driven proton-feeding effect, the cathodic current density presents no significant change within 50 h. In addition, the density functional theory (DFT) and Attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectrum (ATR-SEIRAS) results verify the reaction path and protons-feeding kinetic process.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts show great potential for heterogeneous catalysis. However, recognizing and engineering the microenvironment of M-N x sites to achieve satisfactory catalytic performance remains challenging. Herein, we propose a facile g-C 3 N 4 -assisted template strategy to anchor atomic Fe-N 4 sites on highly nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets. Through regulating the ratio and type of peripheral nitrogen species by carbonization temperature, the optimal Fe-N-C-800 catalyst showed significantly boosted catalytic activities (overall turnover frequency of 13.43 min −1 and activation energy of 19.44 kJ mol −1 ) for nitroarene reduction with extremely low reductant dosage, exceeding most reported metal catalysts. Experimental and theoretical results reveal appropriate graphitic- and pyrrolic-N dopants surrounding the Fe-N 4 center can tailor the local electronic structure and contribute to obvious upshift of the d-band center, which dramatically promotes the adsorption and conversion of reactant substrates, eventually delivering the unprecedented catalytic performance. This work provides a guide for rational coordination environment regulation of single-atom catalysts for efficient chemical transformations.

Abstract:The interaction between oxygen species and metal sites of various orbitals exhibits intimate correlation with the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. Herein, we represent a new approach for boosting the inherent ORR activity of atomically dispersed Fe−N−C matrix by implanting Fe atomic clusters nearby. Our as‐prepared catalyst delivers excellent ORR activity with half–wave potentials of 0.78 V and 0.90 V in acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively. The decent ORR activity could also be validated from the high‐performance rechargeable Zn–air battery. The experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that the electron spin–state of monodispersed Fe active sites is transferred from the low spin (LS, t2g6 eg0) to the medium spin (MS, t2g5 eg1) due to the involvement of Fe atomic clusters, leading to the spin electron filling in σ∗ orbit, by which it favors OH− desorption and in turn boosts the reaction kinetics of the rate‐determining step. Pyridinic-N Regulated Electron Injection to Modulate *OH Adsorption at Fe-N-C Sites for an Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:To enhance the efficiency of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, precise control over the adsorption/desorption energy barriers of oxygen intermediates at atomically dispersed Fe-N-C sites is essential yet challenging. Addressing this, we employed a pyrolysis approach using a nitrogen-containing polymer to fabricate Fe single-atom (SA) catalysts embedded in a pyridinic-N enriched carbon matrix. This synthesis strategy yielded Fe SAs that demonstrated a superior electrochemical ORR performance, evidenced by an impressive half-wave potential of 0.941 V and a high limiting current density of 5.72 mA/cm2. Moreover, when applied in homemade Zn-air batteries, this premier catalyst exhibited exceptional specific capacity (720 mAh/gZn), peak power density (253 mW/cm2), and notable long-term stability. Theoretical insights revealed that the increased pyridinic-N content in the catalyst facilitated efficient electron transfer from N atoms to the Fe active sites, thus fine-tuning the d-band center and effectively controlling the adsorption energy barrier of *OH species. These mechanisms synergistically improve the ORR performance. Crucially, this fabrication method shows promise for adaptation to other transition metal-based SAs, including Co, Ni, and Cu, potentially establishing a versatile synthesis route for developing atomically dispersed catalyst systems in future applications.
Boosting Electrochemical Nitrogen Reduction via Axial Coordination Engineering on Single‐Iron‐Atom Catalysts

Abstract:The axial oxygen coordination strategy is developed to optimize the local electron distribution on single‐iron‐atom catalysts. The axial oxygen ligand hinders the H+ adsorption and improves the N2 adsorption and activation on iron single‐site. Therefore, the FePc‐O‐CP exhibits a superior NH3 yield rate (59.72 μg h−1 mg−1cat.) and a considerable Faradaic efficiency (13.76%) in electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction. Electrocatalytic nitrogen (N2) reduction reaction (NRR) presents a sustainable alternative to the Haber–Bosch process for ammonia (NH3) synthesis. Iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is demonstrated as a promising catalyst for the electrocatalytic NRR. However, FePc with planar symmetric Fe‐N4 sites exhibits poor N2 adsorption and activation capabilities, resulting in an unsatisfactory NRR performance. Herein, an axial oxygen coordination strategy is developed to optimize the local electron distribution on FePc for improving N2 adsorption and activation. The as‐obtained FePc‐O‐CP shows a superior NH3 yield rate (59.72 μg h−1 mg−1cat.) and a considerable Faradaic efficiency (13.76%) in 0.1 m HCl. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify that the axial oxygen ligand on FePc inhibits the adsorption of H+ and enhances the N2 adsorption and activation, thereby greatly promoting NH3 generation. This work reveals the significance of regulating the local coordination environment of single‐atom catalysts for improving electrocatalytic NRR performance and provides a feasible strategy for the rational design of atomic‐scale active sites.

Abstract:Manipulating the electronic structure of Fe-N4 single-sites to accelerate the oxygen adsorption kinetics is a commendable approach to improve the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance of single-atom Fe catalysts but remains a challenge. Here we propose an endogenous regulation strategy to in situ design the single-atom Fe catalyst (Fe3C@NCNTs) derived from 1,8-diaminonaphthalene, iron trichloride, and graphitic carbon nitride via Fe-N4 single-sites strongly coupled with Fe3C nanostructures, in which the combination of 1D and 2D doped-carbon structures and the formation of Fe3C|Fe-N4 coupled sites can endow the catalyst with a considerably enhanced electrocatalytic activity and remarkable cycling stability to the ORR in Zn-air batteries. Theoretical calculations further reveal that endogenous Fe3C nanostructures can effectively activate the atomically dispersed Fe-N4 sites, narrowing the energy barriers of the rate-limiting steps of ORR to promote the ORR catalytic performance. This work provides an effective way to in situ tune the electronic structure of metal atoms to boost the ORR performance of single-atom catalysts for electrochemical energy systems.

d-Orbital Electron Delocalization Realized by Axial Fe4 C Atomic Clusters Delivers High-Performance Fe-N-C Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Fe-N-C catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been considered as the most promising nonprecious metal catalyst due to its comparable catalytic performance to Pt in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The active centers of Fe-pyrrolic N4 have been proven to be extremely active for ORR. However, forming a stable Fe-pyrrolic N4 structure is a huge challenge. Here, a Cyan-Fe-N-C catalyst with Fe-pyrrolic N4 as the intrinsic active center is constructed with the help of axial Fe4 C atomic clusters, which shows a half-wave potential of up to 0.836 V (vs. RHE) in the acid environment. More remarkably, it delivers a high power density of 870 and 478 mW cm-2 at 1.0 bar in H2 -O2 and H2 -Air fuel cells, respectively. According to theoretical calculation and in situ spectroscopy, the axial Fe4 C can provide strong electronic perturbation to Fe-N4 active centers, leading to the d-orbital electron delocalization of Fe and forming the Fe-pyrrolic N4 bond with high charge distribution, which stabilizes the Fe-pyrrolic N4 structure and optimizes the OH* adsorption during the catalytic process. This work proposes a new strategy to adjust the electronic structure of single-atom catalysts based on the strong interaction between single atoms and atomic clusters.

Abstract:As an alternative energy, hydrogen can be converted into electrical energy via direct electrochemical conversion in fuel cells. One important drawback of full cells is the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) promoted by the high-loading of platinum-group-metal (PGM) electrocatalysts. Fe-N-C family has been received extensive attention because of its low cost, long service life and high oxygen reduction reaction activity in recent years. In order to further enhance the ORR activity, the synthesis method, morphology regulation and catalytic mechanism of the active sites in Fe-N-C catalysts are investigated. This paper reviews the research progress of Fe-N-C from nanoparticles to single atoms. The structure-activity relationship and catalytic mechanism of the catalyst are studied and discussed, which provide a guidance for rational design of the catalyst, so as to promote the more reasonable design of Fe-N-C materials.

Abstract:There is an urgent need for developing nonprecious metal catalysts to replace Pt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Atomically dispersed M-Nx/C catalysts have shown promising ORR activity; however, enhancing their performance through modulating their active site structure is still a challenge. In this study, a simple approach was proposed for preparing atomically dispersed iron catalysts embedded in nitrogen- and fluorine-doped porous carbon materials with five-coordinated Fe-N5 sites. The C@PVI-(DFTPP)Fe-800 catalyst, obtained through pyrolysis of a bio-inspired iron porphyrin precursor coordinated with an axial imidazole from the surface of polyvinylimidazole-grafted carbon black at 800 °C under an Ar atmosphere, exhibited a high electrocatalytic activity with a half-wave potential of 0.88 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode for ORR through a four-electron reduction pathway in alkaline media. In addition, an anion-exchange membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with C@PVI-(DFTPP)Fe-800 as the cathode electrocatalyst generated a maximum power density of 0.104 W cm-2 and a current density of 0.317 mA cm-2. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrated that a single-atom catalyst (Fe-Nx/C) with an Fe-N5 active site can selectively be obtained; furthermore, the catalyst ORR activity can be tuned using fluorine atom doping through appropriate pre-assembling of the molecular catalyst on a carbon support followed by pyrolysis. This provides an effective strategy to prepare structure-performance-correlated electrocatalysts at the molecular level with a large number of M-Nx active sites for ORR. This method can also be utilized for designing other catalysts.

Abstract:Cleavage of the strong N≡N bond has long been a great challenge for energy-efficient dinitrogen (N2) fixation; thus a reasonable design of reactive species to activate N2 under mild conditions is highly desirable and meaningful. Herein a novel N2 activation strategy of combining 5d early (E) and 3d late (L) transition metals (TMs) is proposed, which is verified by the facile and complete N≡N cleavage via the polarized Fe-Ta bond in gas-phase cluster FeTaC2-. The efficient N≡N cleavage benefits from an electronic-level design of highly strengthened donor-acceptor interactions, in which the 5d-ETM (Ta) mainly pushes electrons from occupied 5d-orbitals to N2 π*-orbitals while the 3d-LTM (Fe) simultaneously pulls electrons from N2 σ/π-orbitals to its unoccupied 3d-orbitals. Through employing 5d-ETM and 3d-LTM to play their respective roles, this work provides a new and versatile idea for activating the inert N≡N bond and inspires relevant design of TM-based catalysts.

Abstract:Fe/N/C catalysts have been regarded as prospective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). As reported, doping S into the Fe/N/C catalyst is an effective strategy to further enhance its ORR performance. Herein, a rational design is demonstrated to synthesize Fe/S/N/C catalysts with a flexible ratio of the doped Fe and S. Through atomic substitution and molecular confinement methods, Fe and S were incorporated into the ZIF-8 precursor, respectively. After further pyrolysis, the Fe/S/N/C catalyst was obtained with uniformly dispersed Fe-Nx, C-S-C active sites and high specific surface area. The Fe/S/N/C catalyst shows a high half-wave potential in alkaline medium, nearly 32 mV higher than the commercial Pt/C, owing to the strong synergistic effect from Fe-Nx and C-S-C active sites. Additionally, the Fe/S/N/C catalyst exhibits good long-term electrocatalytic durability and high endurance to methanol crossover, implying it is a suitable candidate to take the place of conventional Pt or Pt-based catalysts in electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Iron,nitrogen-codoped carbon (FeNC) has emerged as promising alternatives to precious metals for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we demonstrate that the ORR activity of FeNC can be markedly enhanced by the incorporation of adjacent Fe few-atom clusters (Fe AC ), where the octahedral field of Fe AC boosts the splitting of the parallelogram field of FeN 4 , and facilitates the transition from high-spin (t 2g 3 e g 2 ) Fe(III)N 4 to medium-spin (t 2g 5 e g 1 ) Fe(II)N 4 and hence the interaction with the π* antibonding orbitals of oxygen. This leads to a remarkable ORR performance due to optimized desorption of the OH* intermediate on FeN 4 , with a half-wave potential of +0.80 in 0.1 M HClO 4 , in comparison to that with only FeN 4 single-atom moieties. In H 2 -O 2 fuel cell tests, a high peak power density of 0.80 W cm −2 is obtained. Results from this work highlight the significance of spin engineering in the manipulation and optimization of the ORR activity of single-atom catalysts.
