Abstract:The porphyrin macrocycle can stabilize a set of magnetic metal ions, thus introducing localized net spins near the center. However, it remains elusive but most desirable to introduce delocalized spins in porphyrins with wide implications, for example, for building correlated quantum spins. Here, we demonstrate that metal-free porphyrins host delocalized π-electron magnetism, as revealed by scanning probe microscopy and a different level of theory calculations. Our results demonstrate that engineering of π-electron topologies introduces a spin-polarized singlet state and delocalized net spins in metal-free porphyrins. In addition, the π-electron magnetism can be switched on/off via scanning tunneling microscope manipulation by tuning the interfacial charge transfer. Binding affinities of metalloporphyrins

Abstract:Theoretical studies on the complexes formed by metalloporphyrins with heterocyclic compounds are performed using the semiempirical AM1 method. These complexes are predicted to be formed because of their negative binding energies. The binding affinity of the Zn-porphyrin to imidazole is stronger than the other guest molecules. The interactions between the metalloporphyrin and heterocyclic molecules are ascribed to the coordinate bonding and hydrogen bonding. Based on the AM1 optimized geometries, the electronic spectra and IR spectra of the complexes are calculated by the INDO/CIS and AM1 methods, respectively. The first and main absorptions in the electronic spectra of the Zn-porphyrin complexes compared with those of the host are-blue-shifted due to the coordinate interaction. The stretching vibration frequencies of the C-H bonds in the IR spectra of the Zn-porphyrin complexes relative to those of the host are red-shifted owing to the formation of the hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:A proper theoretical description of electronic structure of the 3d orbitals in the metal centers of functional metalorganics is a challenging problem. In this letter, we apply density functional theory and an exact diagonalization method in a many body approach to study the ground state electronic configuration of an iron porphyrin (FeP) molecule. Our study reveals that dynamical correlation effects are important, and FeP is a potential candidate for realizing a spin crossover due to a subtle balance of crystal field effects, on-site Coulomb repulsion and hybridization between the Fe d-orbitals and ligand N p-states. The mechanism of switching between two close lying electronic configurations of Fe-d orbitals is shown. We discuss the generality of the suggested approach and the possibility to properly describe the electronic structure and related low energy physics of the whole class of correlated metal centered organometallic molecules.

Abstract:The study of magnetic properties, especially the magnetic anisotropy of iron-porphyrin complexes employing multiconfigurational methods, is quite challenging due to many strongly correlated electrons in nearly degenerate orbitals. However, a prerequisite for observing the magnetic anisotropy and slow magnetization relaxation, the zero-field splitting parameter, D, was experimentally observed decades ago for halide-based axially ligated penta-coordinate Fe(III)-porphyrins. In these complexes, the signs of D were reported mostly as positive; in a few cases, inconclusive signs of the D parameter were also mentioned. However, no ab initio calculations have been reported to shed light on this. Deciphering the electronic structure of these penta-coordinated complexes employing the complete active space self-consistent field method and N-electron valence second-order perturbation theory, we confirm the positive D values. However, a negative D value is highly desired to observe the single-molecule magnet properties without an external magnetic field, which we observed in the Fe(II)-porphyrin complexes with axial imidazole ligands instead of halide ligands. The detailed analysis of the multireference wave functions unravels the role of axial ligands in determining the sign and magnitude of the D parameters.

Abstract:Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a crucial tool, through spin labelling, in investigations of the chemical structure of materials and of the electronic structure of materials associated with unpaired spins. ESR spectra measured in molecular systems, however, are established on large ensembles of spins and usually require a complicated structural analysis. Recently, the combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy with ESR has proved to be a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here we extend this technique to single coordination complexes-iron phthalocyanines (FePc)-and investigate the magnetic interactions between their molecular spin with either another molecular spin (in FePc-FePc dimers) or an atomic spin (in FePc-Ti pairs). We show that the molecular spin density of FePc is both localized at the central Fe atom and also distributed to the ligands (Pc), which yields a strongly molecular-geometry-dependent exchange coupling.

Abstract:Advances in surface-assisted synthesis routes now allow for precise control in the preparation and modification of low-dimensional structures. The choice of molecular precursors plays a fundamental role in these processes since the structural details and properties of the resulting nanostructures directly depend on the molecular block used. From this perspective, units based on porphyrins have proven to be promising candidates for the construction of nanosystems with nontrivial geometry. In particular, efforts have been made to synthesize different arrangements of π-conjugated porphyrins. With this motivation, we use computational simulations to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of nanoribbons constructed from the concatenation of π-extended porphyrins hosting transition metal atoms. We show that the binding energy of these systems and the specific way the electrons populate the d-shells are strongly influenced by the type of the transition metal. Furthermore, it was observed that most systems with chelated metals (except Ni and Zn) feature magnetic properties. The systems considered in this work have analogs in finite structures recently synthesized in the laboratory so the nanomaterials proposed here have a high potential to be produced in the near future.

From Coordination to π‐Hole Chemistry of Transition Metals: Metalloporphyrins as a Case of Study

Abstract:Herein we have evidenced the formation of favorable π‐hole Br···metal noncovalent interactions (NCIs) involving elements from groups 9, 11 and 12. More in detail, M (M = Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+) containing porphyrins have been synthesized and their supramolecular assemblies structurally characterized by means of single crystal X‐ray diffraction and Hirshfeld surface analyses, revealing the formation of directional Br···M contacts in addition to ancillary hydrogen bond and lone pair‐π bonds. Computations at the PBE0‐D3/def2‐TZVP level of theory revealed the π‐hole nature of the Br···M interaction. In addition, the physical nature of these NCIs was studied using Quantum Chemistry methodologies, providing evidence of π‐hole Spodium and Regium bonds in Zn2+ and Cu2+ porphyrins, in addition to unveiling the presence of a π‐hole for group 9 (Co2+). On the other hand, group 10 (Ni2+) acted as both electron donor and acceptor moiety without showing an electropositive π‐hole. Owing to the underexplored potential of π‐hole interactions in transition metal chemistry, we believe the results reported herein will be useful in supramolecular chemistry, organometallics, and solid‐state chemistry by i) putting under the spotlight the π‐hole chemistry involving first row transition metals and ii) unlocking a new tool to direct the self‐assembly of metalloporphyrins.

N‐Aromatic Complexation in Tetraphenyl Porphyrin Iron (III)‐Pyridine: Evidence of Spin‐Flip via Gas‐Phase Electronic Spectroscopy

Abstract:There is growing interest in the electronic properties of metalloporphyrins especially in relation to their interactions with other molecular species in their local environment. Here, UV‐VIS laser photodissociation spectroscopy in vacuo has been applied to an iron‐centred metalloporphyrin (FeTPP+) and its N‐aromatic adduct with pyridine (py) to determine the electronic effect of complexation. Both the metalloporphyrin (FeTPP+) and pyridine adduct (FeTPP+⋅py) absorb strongly across the spectral region studied (652‐302 nm: 1.91‐4.10 eV). Notably, a large blue shift was observed for the dominant Soret band (41 nm) upon complexation (0.47 ± 0.02 eV), indicative of strong pyridine binding. Significant differences in the profiles (i.e. number and position of bands) of the electronic spectra are evident comparing FeTPP+ and FeTPP+⋅py. Time‐dependent density functional theory calculations were used to assign the spectra, revealing that the FeIII spin‐state flips from S = 3/2 to S = 5/2 upon complexation with pyridine. For FeTPP+, all bright spectral transitions are found to be π‐π* in character, with electron density variously distributed across the porphyrin and/or its phenyl substituents. Similar electronic excitations are observed for FeTPP+⋅py, with an additional bright transition which involves charge transfer from the porphyrin to the pyridine moiety.

Abstract:Open-shell systems with extensive π-conjugation have fascinating properties due to their narrow bandgaps and spin interactions. In this work, we report neutral open-shell di- and polyradical conjugated materials exhibiting intriguing optical and magnetic properties. Our key design advance is the planarized geometry allowing for greater interaction between adjacent spins. This results in absorption and emission in the near infrared at 803 and 1050 nanometers, respectively, and we demonstrate a unique electronic structure where a bright zwitterionic excited state is the lowest-accessible electronic transition. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and superconducting quantum interference device measurements reveal that our materials are open-shell singlets with different degrees of spin interactions, dynamics, and antiferromagnetic properties, which likely contributed to the formation of their emissive zwitterionic singlet excited state and near-infrared emission. In addition, our materials show reversible and stable electrochromic switching with more than 500 cycles, indicating their potential for optoelectronic and electrochemical energy storage applications.

Abstract:Organic open-shell compounds are extraordinarily attractive materials for their use in molecular spintronics thanks to their long spin-relaxation times and structural flexibility. Porphyrins (Pors) have widely been used as molecular platforms to craft persistent open-shell structures through solution-based redox chemistry. However, very few examples of inherently open-shell Pors have been reported, which are typically obtained through the fusion of non-Kekulé polyaromatic hydrocarbon moieties to the Por core. The inherent instability and low solubility of these radical species, however, requires the use of bulky substituents and multistep synthetic approaches. On-surface synthesis has emerged as a powerful tool to overcome such limitations, giving access to structures that cannot be obtained through classical methods. Herein, we present a simple and straightforward method for the on-surface synthesis of phenalenyl-fused Pors using readily available molecular precursors. In a systematic study, we examine the structural and electronic properties of three surface-supported Pors, bearing zero, two (PorA2), and four (PorA4) meso-fused phenalenyl moieties. Abstract:The electron transport via a series of porphyrin molecular wires coordinated with various metal cations (Zn 2+ , Pt 2+ , Pd 2+ , and Ni 2+ ) has been investigated with the metal-molecule-metal junctions by using the first principle approach, on basis of density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function calculation. The metal cation effect on the transportation behavior has been compared and discussed in terms of the electronic structures and transmission spectra. The results demonstrate that the coordination of metal cations may decrease the molecular conductance.
Many-body effects in porphyrin-like transition metal complexes embedded in graphene

Abstract:We introduce a new computational method to study porphyrin-like transition metal complexes, bridging density functional theory and exact many-body techniques, such as the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We first derive a multi-orbital Anderson impurity Hamiltonian starting from first principles considerations that qualitatively reproduce GGA+U results when ignoring inter-orbital Coulomb repulsion $U'$ and Hund exchange $J$. An exact canonical transformation is used to reduce the dimensionality of the problem and make it amenable to DMRG calculations, including all many-body terms (both intra, and inter-orbital), which are treated in a numerically exact way. We apply this technique to FeN$_4$ centers in graphene and show that the inclusion of these terms has dramatic effects: as the iron orbitals become single occupied due to the Coulomb repulsion, the inter-orbital interaction further reduces the occupation yielding a non-monotonic behavior of the magnetic moment as a function of the interactions, with maximum polarization only in a small window at intermediate values of the parameters. Furthermore, $U'$ changes the relative position of the peaks in the density of states, particularly on the iron $d_{z^2}$ orbital, which is expected to greatly affect the binding of ligands.

Abstract:Molecules with multifunctional properties are of immense interest in hybrid materials, while challenges still existed because of the limited compatibility of multiple functionalities in a single system. In this work, a series of metal-organic complexes were synthesized and characterized under the assembly of electron donor phosphonate, electron acceptor polypyridine ligand and spin carrier rare earth ions. All the compounds exhibited remarkable and reversible responses with photochromism and photomodulated fluorescence, originated from photogenerated radicals via electron transfer from phosphonates to polypyridine ligands. For the Dy analog, slow magnetic relaxation was observed at cryogenic temperature, indicating the single-molecule magnetic behavior. Furthermore, photogenerated radicals could enhance the proton conductive behavior, with about 2 times larger in magnitude after light irradiation for Dy and Y compounds. The introduction of photoluminescence, magnetism and proton conduction into metallic phosphonates can provide potential applications for photochromic materials.

Abstract:Among known molecular switches, spiropyrans attract considerable interest because of their reversible responsiveness to external stimuli and the deep conformational and electronic changes that characterize the switching process between the two isomeric forms [spiropyran (SP) and merocyanine (MC)]. Metal coordination is one of the most interesting aspects of spiropyrans for its potential in sensing, catalysis, and medicinal chemistry, but little is known about the details surrounding spiropyran-metal ion binding. We investigated the interplay between an N-modified 8-methoxy-6-nitrospiropyran (SP-E), designed to provide appropriate molecular flexibility and a range of competing/collaborative metal binding sites, with Mg2+ , Cu2+ and Zn2+ , which were chosen for their similar coordination geometry preferences while differing in their hard/soft character. The formed molecular complexes were studied by means of UV/Vis, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry, and the crystal structure of the SP-E-Cu complex was also obtained. The results indicate that the Mg2+ , Zn2+ and Cu2+ complexes have identical coordination stoichiometry. Furthermore, the Mg2+ and Zn2+ complexes display fluorescence properties in solution and visible-light responsiveness. These results provide important spectroscopic and structural information that can serve as a foundation for rational design of spiropyran-based smart materials for metal sensing and scavenging applications.

Abstract:Understanding the electronic structure between porphyrins and ultrathin metal-oxide film interfaces is vital for the rational design of functional molecular architectures. Here, we have studied the interfacial electronic properties of porphyrin molecular thin films on well-ordered thin layers of CoO(111) and metallic Co(100) surfaces by means of X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopies. In this work, we observed the direct self-metalation of free-base porphyrin molecules at the interface to CoO(111) at room temperature by monitoring the N is core-level evolution. On metallic Co(100) films, no metalation occurs, but it can be induced by exposure to oxygen. The oxygen-induced metalation has, to the best of our knowledge, not been reported until now and might play an important role in processes where porphyrins are exposed to metals in a reactive environment.

Abstract:Recently, molecular electronics has become increasingly important. By applying the hybrid density functional theory coupled with the Green's function method, the current-voltage characteristics of the molecular junctions composed of gold-porphyrin-gold and gold-copper porphyrin-gold were investigated. The role of the metal coordination effect in organic molecular electron transport was highlighted. Although the thresholds of the bias voltage for both molecules were almost the same, approximately 0.9 V, the metal compound showed a larger increase in current because of the metal-coordination-enhanced molecule-electrode coupling in the frontier molecular orbitals.

The spin state energetics of a transition metal complex can be predicted theoretically on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) or wave function based methodology, where DFT has advantages since it can be applied routinely to medium-to-large-sized molecules and spin-state consistent density functionals are now available. Additional factors such as the effect of the basis set, thermochemical contributions, solvation, relativity, and dispersion, have been investigated by many researchers, but challenges in unambiguous assignment of spin states still remain. The first DFT studies showed intrinsic spin-state preferences of hybrid functionals for high spin and early generalized gradient approximation functionals for low spin. Progress in the development of density functional approximations (DFAs) then led to a class of specially designed DFAs, such as OPBE, SSB-D, and S12g, and brought a very intriguing and fascinating observation that the spin states of transition metals and the SN2 barriers of organic molecules are somehow intimately linked. Among the many noteworthy results that emerged from the search for the appropriate description of the complicated spin state preferences in transition metals, we mainly focused on the examination of the connection between the spin state and the structures or coordination modes of the transition metal complexes. Changes in spin states normally lead only to changes in the metal-ligand bond lengths, but to the best of our knowledge, the dapsox ligand showed the first example of a transition-metal complex where a change in spin state leads also to changes in the coordination, switching between pentagonal-bipyramidal and capped-octahedron. Moreover, we have summarized the results of the thorough study that corrected the experimental assignment of the nature of the recently synthesized Sc3+ adduct of [FeIV(O)(TMC)]2+ (TMC = 1,4,8,11-tetramethylcyclam) and firmly established that the Sc3+-capped iron-oxygen complex corresponds to high-spin FeIII. Last, but not least, we have provided deeper insight and rationalization of the observation that unlike in metalloenzymes, where the FeIV-oxo is usually observed with high spin, biomimetic FeIV-oxo complexes typically have a intermediate spin state. Energy decomposition analyses on the trigonal-bypiramidal (TBP) and octahedral model systems with ammonia ligands have revealed that the interaction energy of the prepared metal ion in the intermediate spin state is much smaller for the TBP structure. This sheds light on the origin of the intermediate spin state of the biomimetic TBP FeIV-oxo complexes.
Structural, photophysical, electrochemical and spintronic study of first-row metal Tetrakis(meso-triphenylamine)-porphyrin complexes: A combined experimental and theoretical study

Abstract:Different metal ions in the center of 3d-metalloporphyrins have subtle influences on their structural, photophysical, electrochemical, and spintronic properties. A new series of symmetrically meso-substituted porphyrins with six first row transition metals, namely TPA-MPs (M = 2H, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. The electrostatic potential energy surface (ESP) calculated by density functional theory (DFT) exhibits the concentrated positive electrostatic potential on the substituted triphenylamine group, while the negative electrostatic potential localized on the porphyrin ring varies depending on metal ions. All compounds were crystallographically characterized and showed a coplanar porphyrin macrocyclic ring except for TPA-MnP and TPA-ZnP, which are distorted due to their occupied axial sites by Cl− and H2O, respectively. Furthermore, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) confirmed the valence states of the metal ions in the TPA-MPs. Electronic spectra revealed a gradual bathochromic shift following the order of TPA-CoP < TPA-CuP < TPA-P = TPA-NiP < TPA-FeP < TPA-ZnP < TPA-MnP by appending different metal ions in the porphyrin skeleton. TPA-MnP exhibited the most significant bathochromic shift (Δλmax = 49 nm) in the Soret band compared to TPA-P. The electrochemical redox potentials of the TPA-MPs decrease with the stepwise filling of d orbitals of the central metal ions from 0.86 to 0.81 V and the completely filled 3d orbital of Zn endows TPA-ZnP with the lowest oxidation onset. Meanwhile, TPA-MnP and TPA-FeP exhibited dramatically reduced HOMO-LUMO gaps of 1.78 eV and 1.58 eV, respectively, compared to other TPA-MPs. The excellent thermal stability, panchromatic absorption in the whole visible range, and suitable energy levels of TPA-MPs indicate huge potential in the application as dyes.
