Abstract:We study the effect of higher-curvature terms in the string low-energy effective actions on the cosmological solutions of the theory, up to corrections quartic in the curvatures, for the bosonic and heterotic strings as well as the type II superstring. We find that cosmological solutions exist for all string types but they always disappear when the dilaton field is included, a conclusion that can be avoided if string-loop effects are taken into account.

Abstract:A modification of the Einstein-Hilbert theory, the Covariant Canonical Gauge Gravity (CCGG), leads to a cosmological constant that represents the energy of the space-time continuum when deformed from its (A)dS ground state to a flat geometry. CCGG is based on the canonical transformation theory in the De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian formulation. That framework modifies the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian of the free gravitational field by a quadratic Riemann-Cartan concomitant. The theory predicts a total energy-momentum of the system of space-time and matter to vanish, in line with the conjecture of a "Zero-Energy-Universe" going back to Lorentz (1916) and Levi-Civita (1917). Consequently a flat geometry can only exist in presence of matter where the bulk vacuum energy of matter, regardless of its value, is eliminated by the vacuum energy of space-time.% $\lambda_0$. The observed cosmological constant $\Lambda_{\mathrm{obs}}$ is found to be merely a small correction %of the order $10^{-120} \,\lambda_0$ attributable to deviations from a flat geometry and effects of complex dynamical geometry of space-time, namely torsion and possibly also vacuum fluctuations of matter and space-time. That quadratic extension of General Relativity, anticipated already in 1918 by Einstein \cite{einstein18}, thus provides a significant and natural contribution to resolving the %$120$ orders of magnitude miss-estimate called the "cosmological constant problem".

Abstract:The discrepancy between the observed value of the cosmological constant (CC) and its expected value from quantum field theoretical considerations motivates the search for a theory in which the CC is decoupled from the vacuum energy. In this article, we consider theories in which the CC is regarded as an integration constant. These theories include trace-free Einstein gravity, theories constructed from the Codazzi equation (which includes Cotton gravity and a gauge-gravity inspired theory), and conformal Killing gravity. We remark on a recent debate regarding the viability of Cotton gravity and find that while the Codazzi equation is indeed underdetermined, the solutions of the Codazzi equation trivialize to $\lambda g_{ab}$ on generic backgrounds, and that in principle, one can close the system with the divergence-free condition and an appropriate choice of initial data. We also propose a full variational principle (full in the sense that variations in all variables are considered) for each of the aforementioned theories that can incorporate the matter sector; in this manner, we can obtain the trace-free Einstein equations without a unimodular constraint.

Abstract:We construct the higher order terms of curvatures in Lagrangians of the scale factor for the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe, which are linear in the second derivative of the scale factor with respect to cosmic time. It is shown that they are composed from the Lovelock tensors at the first step; iterative construction yields arbitrarily high order terms. The relation to the former work on higher order gravity is discussed. Despite the absence of scalar degrees of freedom in cosmological models which come from our Lagrangian, it is shown that an inflationary behavior of the scale factor can be found. The application to the thick brane solutions is also studied.

Abstract:We consider a quantum scalar field in a classical (Euclidean) De Sitter background, whose radius is fixed dynamically by Einstein's equations. In the case of a free scalar, it has been shown by Becker and Reuter that if one regulates the quantum effective action by putting a cutoff N on the modes of the quantum field, the radius is driven dynamically to infinity when N tends to infinity. We show that this result holds also in the case of a self-interacting scalar, both in the symmetric and broken-symmetry phase. Furthermore, when the gravitational background is put on shell, the quantum corrections to the mass and quartic self-coupling are found to be finite.

Abstract:In this paper, motivated from the fact that a de Sitter cosmological boundary corresponds to a positive cosmological constant, we consider time variable cosmological constants, dubbed {\it horizon cosmological constants}. The horizon cosmological constants correspond to Hubble horizon, future event horizon and particle horizon are discussed respectively. When the Hubble horizon is taken as a cosmological length scale, the effective equation of state of horizon cosmological constant is quintessence-like. The values of model parameter $c$ will determine the current status of our universe. When particle horizon is taken as the cosmological length scale, non viable cosmological model can be obtained for the requirement of $\Omega_{\Lambda}<1/3$ which conflicts with current comic observations. When the future event horizon is taken as the role of cosmological length scale, the forms of effective equation of state of horizon cosmological constants are the the same as the holographic ones. But, their evolutions are different because of the effective interaction with cold dark matter.

Abstract:We consider a simple modification of the amplitude defining the dynamics of loop quantum gravity, corresponding to the introduction of the cosmological constant, and possibly related to the SL(2,C)q extension of the theory recently considered by Fairbairn-Meusburger and Han. We show that in the context of spinfoam cosmology, this modification yields the de Sitter cosmological solution.

Abstract:Our focus is on a specific type-N space-time that exhibits closed time-like curves in general relativity theory within the framework of Ricci-inverse gravity model. The matter-energy content is solely composed of a pure radiation field, and it adheres to the energy conditions while featuring a negative cosmological constant. One of the key findings in this investigation is the non-zero determinant of the Ricci tensor ($R_{\mu\nu}$), which implies the existence of an anti-curvature tensor ($A^{\mu\nu}$) and, as a consequence, an anti-curvature scalar ($A \neq R^{-1}$). Furthermore, we establish that this type-N space-time serves as a solution within modified gravity theories via the Ricci-inverse model, which involves adjustments to the cosmological constant ($\Lambda$) and the energy density ($\rho$) of the radiation field expressed in terms of a coupling constant. As a result, our findings suggest that causality violations remain possible within the framework of this Ricci-inverse gravity model, alongside the predictions of general relativity.

Abstract:We identify an ambiguity in the Chern-Simons formulation of three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant that originates in an outer automorphism of the Lie algebra sl(2,R). It has important consequences for the stability of the theory in a space-time with boundary. We revisit the classical equivalence of three-dimensional gravity with a boundary Liouville theory both on and off the mass shell. Moreover, we provide further details on the quantum equivalence, the gauge symmetry that renders the spectrum diagonal, as well as the relation between asymptotically AdS3 metrics and polar boundary conditions. We thus set the proposal that the Liouville conformal field theory serves as a definition of a unitary theory of pure gravity in three dimensions with negative cosmological constant on a more stable footing.

Abstract:We examine higher-curvature gravities whose FLRW configurations are specified by equations of motion which are of second order in derivatives, just like in Einstein gravity. We name these theories Cosmological Gravities and initiate a systematic exploration in dimensions $D \geq 3$. First, we derive an instance of Cosmological Gravity to all curvature orders and dimensions $D \geq 3$. Second, we study Cosmological Gravities admitting non-hairy generalizations of the Schwarzschild solution characterized by a single function whose equation of motion is, at most, of second order in derivatives. We present explicit instances of such theories for all curvature orders and dimensions $D \geq 4$. Finally, we investigate the equations of motion for cosmological perturbations in the context of generic Cosmological Gravities. Remarkably, we find that the linearized equations of motion for scalar cosmological perturbations in any Cosmological Gravity in $D\geq 3$ contain no more than two time derivatives. We explicitly corroborate this aspect by presenting the equations for the scalar perturbations in some four-dimensional Cosmological Gravities up to fifth order in the curvature.

Gravitational radiation with $Λ>0$

Abstract:We study gravitational radiation for a positive value of the cosmological constant $\Lambda$. We rely on two battle-tested procedures: (i) We start from the same null coordinate system used by Bondi and Sachs for $\Lambda = 0$, but, introduce boundary conditions adapted to allow radiation when $\Lambda>0$. (ii) We determine the asymptotic symmetries by studying, à la Regge-Teitelboim, the surface integrals generated in the action by these boundary conditions. A crucial difference with the $\Lambda=0$ case is that the wave field does not vanish at large distances, but is of the same order as de Sitter space. This novel property causes no difficulty; on the contrary, it makes quantities finite at every step, without any regularization. A direct consequence is that the asymptotic symmetry algebra consists only of time translations and space rotations. Thus, it is not only finite-dimensional, but smaller than de Sitter algebra. We exhibit formulas for the energy and angular momentum and their fluxes. In the limit of $\Lambda$ tending to zero, these formulas go over continuously into those of Bondi, but the symmetry jumps to that of Bondi, Metzner and Sachs. The expressions are applied to exact solutions, with and without radiation present, and also to the linearized theory.

Abstract:We explore the possibility of a consistent cosmology based on the gauge-fixing independent running of the gravitational and cosmological constants ($G$ and $\Lambda$) in the framework of effective quantum gravity. In particular, their running in this framework was found to satisfy $G \propto \Lambda^4$. In the cosmological setting, the covariance of the theory provides energy conservation relations, which are impossible to satisfy with the unique scale parameter. However, by introducing the second sub-dominant scale corresponding to the higher-loop corrections and higher-derivative terms, one can close the system of equations for the running of parameters and arrive at the consistent cosmological solutions. This approach yields a change in the cosmological expansion history that affects the ratio of the Hubble parameter today to the Hubble parameter at high redshift.

Abstract:We propose that the solution to the cosmological vacuum energy puzzle may come from the infrared sector of the effective theory of gravity, where the impact of the trace anomaly is of upmost relevance. We proceed by introducing two auxiliary fields, which are capable of describing a diversity of quantum states via specification of their macroscopic (IR) boundary conditions, in contrast to ultraviolet quantum effects. Our investigation aims at finding a realistic cosmological solution which interprets the observed cosmological constant as a well defined deficit in the zero point energy density of the Universe. The energy density arises from a phase transition, which alters the properties of the quantum ground state. We explicitly formulate low energy gravity as an effective field theory with a precise definition of the "point of normalization" as the point at which the "renormalized cosmological constant" is set to zero in the Minkowski vacuum, in which the Einstein equations are automatically satisfied as the Ricci tensor identically vanishes. With this definition the effective QFT of gravity has a predictive power. In particular, it must predict the evolution of the system in any nontrivial geometry, including the vacuum energy behaviour as a function of infrared, rather than ultraviolet, input parameters.

Abstract:Relations between the graviton mass and the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ have led to some interesting implications. We show that in any approach which leads to a direct correlation between the graviton mass and $\Lambda$, either through direct substitution of gravitational coupling in dispersion relations or through the linearization of Einstein equations with massive spin-2 fields, the Compton wavelength of the graviton lies in the superhorizon scale. As a result any gravitational approaches where the graviton mass is related directly to the cosmological constant are of no observational significance.

Abstract:This research study is primarily focus on investigating an exact vacuum solution characterized by a negative cosmological constant, , within the framework of a modified gravity theory. Our specific focus is on a novel theory known as Ricci-inverse gravity. This vacuum solution is representative of an Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, which, in general relativity, serves as a space‚Äďtime exhibiting properties akin to a time-machine. Significantly, we demonstrate that this AdS space‚Äďtime is a valid solution within the Ricci-inverse gravity theory as well. This outcome implies that Ricci-inverse gravity also allows the formation of closed time-like curves, analogous to what is observed in the context of general relativity. The investigation into Ricci-inverse gravity involves introducing the function f ( R , A ) into the Lagrangian of the system. We consider three distinct scenarios to explore the implications of different choices for the function. The first scenario involves selecting , the second one adopts , and the third scenario employs the function , where and serve as the coupling constants. In each of these scenarios, we derive the modified field equations and subsequently solve them under the assumption of vacuum as the matter-energy content. Notably, our results demonstrate that the cosmological constant undergoes modification based on the coupling constants in each case. Thus, in Ricci-inverse gravity, we establish that this modified Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space‚Äďtime also serves as a model for a time-machine.

Massless and Partially Massless Limits in Quadratic Gravity

Abstract:In the context of perturbative quantum field theory, the addition of quadratic-curvature invariants to the Einstein-Hilbert action makes it possible to achieve strict renormalizability in four dimensions. The additional terms $R^2$ and $C_{\mu\nu\rho\sigma} C^{\mu\nu\rho\sigma}$ are multiplied by dimensionless coefficients that are related to the masses of the extra gravitational degrees of freedom and to the interaction couplings. The aim of this paper is to study the limit of the theory in which the Weyl-squared coefficient tends to infinity. Remarkably, the result of this limit turns out to be sensitive to the presence of a cosmological constant: when the latter is zero we have a massless limit for the spin-2 ghost, while when the cosmological constant is different from zero we obtain a partially massless limit. We show that the renormalizability property and the ghost-like nature of the massive spin-$2$ field ensure that the two limits do not hit strong couplings, unlike standard ghost-free theories of massive gravity. In particular, in the partially massless limit the interactions mediated by the spin-$2$ sector vanish. We argue that our results can be useful for understanding the high-energy limit of Quadratic Gravity.

Cosmology with Higher-Derivative Gravities

Abstract:We introduce an ingenious approach to explore cosmological implications of higher-derivative gravity theories. The key novelty lies in the characterization of the additional massive spin-0 modes constructed from Hubble derivatives as an effective density, with the corresponding pressure uniquely determined by energy conservation, while terms with no Hubble derivatives directly alter Friedmann equations. This classification of the various high-derivative contributions to Friedmann equations develops insight about their cosmological impacts and is essential for understanding the universe's evolution across energy scales. Various examples of higher-derivative gravity theories illustrate the power of this method in efficiently solving Friedmann equations and exploring new phenomena. Using CMB and BAO data, we apply this method to assess the observational feasibility of wall-bouncing universes, as predicted by scenarios with, e.g., certain third order modifications to general relativity. These models also provide an inflationary phase without the need to introduce extra scalar fields.

Abstract:We have studied the inhomogeneous cosmology in Kaluza-Klein spacetime with positive cosmological constant. Depending on the integration constant we have derived two types of solutions. The dimensional reduction is possible of extra dimensional scale factor depending on the curvature of the metric for positive cosmological constant for all solutions. The high value of entropy in present observable universe and the possible matter leakage in $4D$ world due to reduction of extra dimension are also discussed. Our solutions show that early deceleration and late accelerating nature of the universe. Findings are verified by the wellknown Raychaudhuri equation.
