Abstract:Macroscopic regulation of chiral supramolecular nanostructures in liquid-crystalline block copolymers is of great significance in photonics and nanotechnology. Although fabricating helical phase structures via chiral doping and microphase separation has been widely reported, the chiral memory and self-recovery capacity of asymmetric phase structures are the major challenge and still deeply relies on the presence of chiral additives. Herein, we demonstrate the first controllable chiral microphase separation in achiral amphiphilic block copolymer consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) and azobenzene (Azo) groups. Chirality can be transferred to the fabricated helical nanostructures by doping with chiral additives (tartaric acid, TA). After the removal of the chiral additives and then performing the cross-linking, the formed helical nanostructures will completely dispense with the chiral source. The supramolecular chirality and the micron-scale phase structure can be maintained under UV irradiation and heating-cooling treatment, enabling the reversible "on-off" chiroptical switch feature. This work is expected to avoid the tedious synthesis and expensive raw materials, and shows a great application prospect in chiral separation and so on.

Abstract:Chirality transfer (or amplification) in soft materials is an important topic for understanding how chiral assemblies develop from the atomic level to macroscopic objects. This is an interdisciplinary area which is critically associated with the evolution from asymmetric chemistry to asymmetric physics, and, more specifically, in biomaterials, liquid crystals, and polymers. In this review, we discuss our recent studies on the conditions for chirality transfer across different length scales. We observed that the formation of helical structures in different length scales is a typical process in chirality transfer. This is illustrated by a series of nonracemic chiral main-chain liquid crystalline (LC) polyesters, PETs(R*-n). The polymers contained a different number of methylene units in the chain backbone (from 7 to 11). All of the PETs(R*-n) macroscopically exhibited an LC chiral smectic C (S-C*) phase, a chiral smectic A (S-A*) phase, and a twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA*) phase with increasing temperature. The atomic chiral centers caused the helical conformation, and then, helical lamellar crystals were found in these polymers. The crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction techniques. Dark field transmission electron microscopic images revealed Oat the molecular orientation in these helical crystals is double twisted. Our systematic studies showed that chirality transfer from one length scale to another is neither automatic, nor necessary, and it critically depends upon the packing scheme of the chiral building blocks on each length scale. It was particularly surprising that in this series of polyesters, the odd-even effect exists across many length scales. This includes not only thermodynamic properties such as the S-C*, the S-A*, and the TGBA* LC phase transition temperatures, but also the helical crystal handedness.
Assembly and Chiral Memory Effects of Dynamic Macroscopic Supramolecular Helices.

Abstract:Macroscopic enantiomerically pure helical supramolecular fibers are bottom-up assembled in aqueous media from a chiral pi-electron donor template and an achiral pi-electron acceptor. The helices can be assembled to the sub-millimeter scale with controlled handedness. These dynamic supramolecular architectures allow for a quantitative exchange of the chiral donor template with achiral analogues. During this process, a chiral memory effect was observed, affording enantiomerically pure helices composed entirely of achiral components.
Controlled Helicity of the Rigid-Flexible Molecular Assembly Triggered by Water Addition: from Nanocrystal to Liquid Crystal Gel and Aqueous Nanofibers

Abstract:Despite recent advances in synthetic nanometer-scale helical assembly, control of supramolecular chirality remains a challenge. Here, we describe the fine-tuning of the shape and morphology transitions of twisted and helical assembly from dumbbell-shaped rigid-flexible amphiphile triggered by concentration. The amphiphile 2 self-assembles into nonchiral 3D columnar crystals with alternative packing of aromatic segment in solid state. Remarkably, with the addition of water into the solid, the achiral crystal transforms into 2D hexagonally ordered liquid crystal gel with supramolecular chirality due to increased entropy of flexible coil in aqueous environment. Notably, the helical liquid crystal gel was observed to dissolve into optically active aqueous nanofibers caused by a conformational change of hydrophobic aromatic rods and enhanced hydro-volume of the ethylene oxide chains.

Abstract:Helical topological structures are often found in chiral biological systems, but seldom in synthesized polymers. Now, controllable microphase separation of amphiphilic liquid-crystalline block copolymers (LCBCs) consisting of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) and hydrophobic azobenzene-containing poly(methylacrylate) is combined with chirality transfer to fabricate helical nanostructures by doping with chiral additives (enantiopure tartaric acid). Through hydrogen-bonding interactions, chirality is transferred from the dopant to the aggregation, which directs the hierarchical self-assembly in the composite system. Upon optimized annealing condition, helical structures in film are fabricated by the induced aggregation chirality. The photoresponsive azobenzene mesogens in the LCBC assist photoregulation of the self-assembled helical morphologies. This allows the construction and non-contact manipulation of complicated nanostructures.

Abstract:Dynamic controllability of self-organized helical superstructures in spatial dimensions is a key step to promote bottom-up artificial nanoarchitectures and functional devices for diverse applications in a variety of areas. Here, a light-driven chiral overcrowded alkene molecular motor with rod-like substituent is designed and synthesized, and its thermal isomerization reaction exhibits an increasing structural entropy effect on chemical kinetic analysis in anisotropic achiral liquid crystal host than that in isotropic organic liquid. Interestingly, the stimuli-directed angular orientation motion of helical axes in the self-organized helical superstructures doped with the chiral motors enables the dynamic reconfiguration between the planar (thermostationary) and focal conic (photostationary) states. The reversible micromorphology deformation processes are compatible with the free energy fluctuation of self-organized helical superstructures and the chemical kinetics of chiral motors under different conditions. Furthermore, stimuli-directed reversible nonmechanical beam steering is achieved in dynamic hidden periodic photopatterns with reconfigurable attributes prerecorded with a corresponding photomask and photoinduced polymerization.

Abstract:Probing the supramolecular chirality of assemblies and controlling their handedness are closely related to the origin of chirality at the supramolecular level and the development of smart materials with desired handedness. However, it remains unclear how achiral residues covalently bonded to chiral amino acids can function in the chirality inversion of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we report macroscopic chirality and dynamic manipulation of chiroptical activity of hydrogels self-assembled from phenylalanine derivatives, together with the inversion of their handedness achieved solely by exchanging achiral substituents between oligo(ethylene glycol) and carboxylic acid groups. This helicity inversion is mainly induced by distinct stacking mode of the self-assembled building blocks, as collectively confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, circular dichroism, crystallography, and molecular dynamics calculations. Through this straightforward approach, we were able to invert the handedness of helical assemblies by merely exchanging achiral substituents at the terminal of chiral gelators. This work not only presents a feasible strategy to achieve the handedness inversion of helical nanostructures for better understanding of chiral self-assembly process in supramolecular chemistry but also facilities the development of smart materials with controllable handedness in materials science.
Stereospecific supramolecular polymerization of nanoclusters into ultra-long helical chains and enantiomer separation

Abstract:During the construction of supramolecular polymers of smaller nanoparticles/nanoclusters bearing hierarchy and homochirality, the mechanism understanding via intuitive visualization and precise cross-scale chirality modulation is still challenging. For this goal, a cooperative self-assembly strategy is here proposed by using ionic complexes with uniform chemical composition comprising polyanionic nanocluster cores and surrounded chiral cationic organic components as monomers for supramolecular polymerization. The single helical polymer chains bearing a core-shell structure at utmost length over 20 μm are demonstrated showing comparable flexibility resembling covalent polymers. A nucleation-elongation growth mechanism that is not dealt with in nanoparticle systems is confirmed to be accompanied by strict chiral self-sorting. A permeable membrane prepared by simple suction of such supramolecular polymers displays high enantioselectivity (e.e. 98% after four runs) for separating histidine derivatives, which discloses a benefiting helical chain structure-induced functionalization for macroscopic supramolecular materials in highly efficient racemate separation.
Synthesis and Chiral Recognition of Optically Active Hydrogels Containing Helical Polymer Chains

Abstract:Copolymerizations of two novel N-propargylamide monomers [HC CCH2NHCOR, in M1, R: CH = CH2; in M2, R: CH2CH2CH2CH = CH2] with the other two N-propargylamide monomers (M3: achiral monomer; M4: chiral monomer), which were synthesized previously, were carried out in varied monomer feed ratios in the presence of (nbd)Rh+B-(C6H5)(4), with the aim to prepare optically active polymers simultaneously possessing helical polymer backbones and pendent polymerizable vinyl groups. Among the four homopolymers derived from M1-M4, polymer 1 and polymer 2 cannot dissolve completely in any of the usual solvents, while polymer 3 and polymer 4 are known to form stable helical conformations. The expected copolymers were obtained in high yields (>= 95%) and exhibited good solubility in several organic solvents. The obtained copolymers were found to adopt stable helical structures under the investigated conditions. The as-prepared helical copolymers bearing vinyl groups were further employed as macromonomers to copolymerize with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in chloroform at 55 degrees C using 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) as an initiator and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as a cross-linking agent. The copolymerizations took place smoothly, quantitatively providing hydrogels containing helical polymer chains preformed in the first copolymerization step. The helical structures remained in the hydrogels according to circular dichroism spectroscopy measurements. The hydrogels preferentially adsorbed D-tryptophan and (R)-(+)-1-phenylethylamine in the corresponding two enantiomer pairs, demonstrating the potential applications of the novel optically active hydrogels in the areas of chiral recognition and chiral resolution.

Abstract:Unraveling the chirality transfer mechanism is the key to governing chiral expression and structure–property relationships and further constructing new chiral functional devices. Herein, we have systematically investigated the chiral assembly, chiral transfer, and modulation of block copolymers (BCPs) at the molecular, supramolecular, liquid-crystalline (LC) phase, and macroscopic morphological levels. It is revealed that the strength of the LC ordering of Azo mesogens, the solvophobic length of core-forming blocks, and the coupling effects between polymer side chains and backbones play important roles in the chiral evolution and shape change. Furthermore, the various morphologies with different shapes were achieved in the chirality transfer process, including spheres, nanofibers (worms and helical nanowires), vesicles, and more complex large compound micelles. The chiroptical response with morphological changes could be controlled by the in situ photoisomerization of the Azo units. This work provides new insights into designing self-assembled systems with tunable chirality and morphology and could advance the understanding of chiral transfer from molecules to polymeric aggregates.

Abstract:Circularly polarized light (CPL), regarded as a true chiral entity, has been suggested as one possible origin of homochirality in nature. It still remains difficult to understand the exact mechanism of chiral induction, transfer and amplification in supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we designed and synthesized three discotic diacetylene LC monomers, in which the peripheral diacetylene flexible chains linked to the triazole derivative cores through H-bonding or covalent bonds. We established links between the primary chemical structures of discotic diacetylene monomers, liquid crystal phase structures and optically active properties in the final supramolecular assemblies. Moreover, the type of junction bonding interaction exhibited a significant influence on the chiral transfer in a supramolecular columnar LC system.

Abstract:Hockey-stick-shaped liquid crystals are interesting due to their unusual physical properties. Nematic phase observed in these materials have shown promising ferroelectric-like switching, ease of alignment in a planar and homeotropic cell, large flexoelectricity, etc. Polar moieties viz. F, Cl, NO2, etc., in their molecular architecture lead to the development of permanent dipole moment which in turn affects the phase structure and physical properties. Herein, we have designed and synthesised a new series of four-ring-based hockey-stick-shaped molecules having polar Cl group at one end and variable aliphatic chains at another end of the molecular long axis. The four phenyl rings are attached via one ester and two imine linkages. All the compounds exhibited enantiotropic mesomorphism. The lower homologs (1–5 to 1–8) exclusively showed nematic phase whereas other higher homologs either exhibited nematic and/or smectic A phase. Compound 1–5 showed a stable nematic phase with the highest phase range of about 110 °C upon cooling. Detailed X-ray diffraction revealed the internal arrangement of molecules in layers. Density functional theory study confirmed the resultant dipole moment of the molecules (approximately 6 Debye) which in turn cancelled out in the bulk phase due to preferable antiparallel arrangement as a dimer.

Abstract:The tunability nature of supramolecular chirality is subtly employed where various small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines are used to copolymerize with m‐phenylenediamine based on a copolymerization‐mediated strategy to modulate the macroscopic helicity as well as the chiroptical activity of the resulting robust covalent polymers in an enantiopure template molecular system. Designing artificial systems to mimic chiral superstructures and exploring how achiral molecules precisely modulate their chirality is crucial to understand the origin of homochirality in nature. Herein, the tunability nature of supramolecular chirality is subtly applied to fabricate robust chiral covalent polymers with controlled macroscopic helicity. When using conventional supramolecular transcription methods to prepare chiral poly(m‐phenylenediamine), simply introducing various small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines (DAPs) to copolymerize with m‐phenylenediamine (MPD) enables the resulting chiral copolymers with adjustable helical configurations and chiroptical activities in an enantiopure template system. The strong hydrogen bonds between DAPs and the template molecules ((S)/(R)‐PhgC16) proved to be the driving force for guiding the chiral polymerization mode of MPD. Impressively, the exquisite self‐sorting phenomenon is observed by tuning the stoichiometric ratio of DAP and (R)‐PhgC16, where the as‐prepared copolymers with opposite helicity can exist simultaneously to form a double network structure and their chiroptical activity can be well regulated. In addition, based on such a copolymerization strategy, a conceptual library of helical functional copolymers is built with editable polymer types including conducting polymers and designable amine‐aldehyde condensation‐based polymers. This copolymerization‐mediated synthetic strategy may facilitate the development of chiral polymers with controlled morphologies and dynamic compositions.

Abstract:While manipulating the helicity of nanostructures is a challenging task, it attracts great research interest on account of its crucial role in better understanding the formation mechanisms of helical systems. For the supramolecular chirality in self-assembly systems, one challenge is how to understand the origin of supramolecular chirality and inherent helicity information on nanostructures regulated by functionality-oriented stacking modes (such as J- and H-aggregation) of building blocks. Herein, two-component hydrogels were prepared by phenylalanine-based enantiomers and achiral bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, where helical nanofibers with inverse handedness as well as controllable helical pitch and diameter were readily obtained through stoichiometric coassembly of these building blocks. The helix inversion was achieved by the transition between the J- and H-aggregation of bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, which was collectively confirmed by circular dichroism, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, the helical coassemblies with opposite handedness could be obtained not only from the enantiomeric building blocks but also from the chiral monomers with the same configurational chirality by exchanging achiral additives. This work provides insight into the origin and helicity inversion of supramolecular chirality in molecular self-assembly systems and may shine light on the precise fabrication of chiral nanostructures for potential applications in smart display devices, optoelectronics, and biological systems.
Polymers Bearing Covalently Linked Chiral Proline-Based Pendants: Induction of a Highly Stable Helical Sense that Mimics Double-Stranded Helical Morphology and Their Chiral Resolution Ability

Abstract:Synthesis of common organic polymers bearing a helical sense in aqueous media is still an inflexible area. Here, we report proline-derived imidazolium-functionalized water-soluble, highly stable chiral polymers/chiral polyelectrolytes whose chiral pendant groups exist at the cation part of the polymer chains with different counteranions. Despite chiral pendants, chiral polymers with chloride counteranions did not respond to circular dichroism (CD) absorption spectroscopy, which suggests that they exist as random coils. Interestingly, hydroxy-containing poly-( l-)-2-OH and poly-( d-)-2-OH showed two intense CD signals (with opposite loops), suggesting that the hydroxyl anion facilitates the noncovalent interactions in the chiral polymers to realize this “random coil to helical” transformation, which failed with the chloride anion. l-Prolinate-substituted polymers (poly-( l-)-2-OH) showed a positive Cotton effect with a double-stranded, right-handed helical sense in the presence of achiral and chiral counteranions. Under identical conditions, d-prolinate-substituted chiral polymers (poly-( d-)-2-OH) showed a negative Cotton effect with a left-handed helical sense, which is exactly opposite to its counterpart. This study discusses the influence of the type of chiral center on a preferred helical sense and tries to establish the influence of chirality at the main chain vs side chain on the type and extent of helicity. The synthesized chiral polymers were successfully used for the chiral resolution of racemic d,l-alanine through enantioselective crystallization. These helical polymers showed good enantio-separation efficiency with an enantiomeric excess (ee) of up to 90%. Here, we demonstrated that by selective choice of the chiral helical polymers, a targeted enantiomer could be recrystallized.

Herein, we report the three-dimensional confined assembly of the chiral block copolymers of polystyrene-block-poly(D-lactide) and its enantiomer in emulsion droplets and demonstrate unprecedented successive microphase transformations from single helices to double helices with inverted helicity, and then to twisted cylinders in the constructed colloidal particles. The above hierarchical structural transformations of chiral microphases are kinetically dependent and can further transform into thermodynamically stable achiral cylinders with saddle-shaped topology upon solvent annealing. The formation and subsequent structural transformations as well as the final degeneration of chiral architectures provide guidance to understand the chiral evolution at different length scales within spherical confined space and to fabricate biomimetic systems. Abstract:Helical architectures with controllable helical sense bias have recently attracted considerable interest for mimicking biological helices and developing novel chiral materials. Coordination polymers (CPs), composed of metal ion nodes and organic linkers, are intriguing systems showing tunable structures and functions. However, CPs with helical morphologies have rarely been explored so far. Particularly, chirality inversion through external stimulus has not been achieved in helical CPs. In this work, we carried out an in-depth investigation on the self-assembly of 1D gadolinium(III) phosphonate CPs using GdX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) and Gd(RSO3 ) (R=CH3 , C6 H5 , CF3 ) as metal sources and R-(1-phenylethylamino)methyl phosphonic acid (R-pempH2 ) as ligand. Superhelices were formed by precise control of the interchain interactions through different intercalated anions. Furthermore, the twisting direction of superhelices could be controlled by synergistic effect of anions and pH. This study may provide a new route to fabricate helical nanostructures of CPs with a desirable chiral sense and help understand the inner mechanism of the self-assembly process of macroscopic helical structures of molecular systems.

Abstract:Self‐assembly of peptides into highly ordered chiral nanostructures has great potential applications in optics, sensing, biomedicine, and templated synthesis. However, the detailed mechanism for the chiral amplification and spontaneous ordering during the self‐assembly of peptides remains largely unexplored. Here, it is shown that by topology control of the co‐assembly of a simple dipeptide and a chiral diamine within a confined film, the supramolecular structures can be controlled precisely from hierarchically organized helical bundles to microcrystals and then parallel aligned nanohelices. The peptide and diamines can co‐assemble into aligned microcrystals when the molar ratio (χ = Cdiamine/Cpeptide) of the two components is 0.5. However, by changing the χ value, excess peptides or diamines create topological defects during the self‐assembly process. This leads to chiral amplification and the formation of long‐range‐ordered nanohelical arrays with controlled phase behaviors. Moreover, the formation of right‐ or left‐handed nanohelices can be further inversed by the topological control, without the need to change the chirality of the peptides. These findings provide new insights into the chiral self‐assembly of amyloid‐related peptides and offer a facile strategy to fabricate highly ordered functional materials.
