Abstract:We report computational results of blood flow through a model of the human aortic arch and a vessel of actual diameter and length. On the top of the aortic arch the branching of the %%three arteries are included: the subclavian and jugular. A realistic pulsatile flow is used in all simulations. Calculations for bifurcation type vessels are also carried out and presented. Different mathematical methods for numerical solution of the fluid dynamics equations have been considered. The non-Newtonian behaviour of the human blood is investigated together with turbulence effects. A detailed time-dependent mathematical convergence test has been carried out. The results of computer simulations of the blood flow in vessels of three different geometries are presented: for pressure, strain rate and velocity component distributions we found significant disagreements between our results obtained with realistic non-Newtonian treatment of human blood and the widely used method in the literature: a simple Newtonian approximation. A significant increase of the strain rate and, as a result, a wall shear stress distribution, is found in the region of the aortic arch. Turbulent effects are found to be important, particularly in the case of bifurcation vessels.

Validation of Numerical Simulations of Thoracic Aorta Hemodynamics: Comparison with In Vivo Measurements and Stochastic Sensitivity Analysis

Abstract:Purpose: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and 4D-flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are synergically used for the simulation and the analysis of the flow in a patient-specific geometry of a healthy thoracic aorta. Methods: CFD simulations are carried out through the open-source code SimVascular. The MRI data are used, first, to provide patient-specific boundary conditions. In particular, the experimentally acquired flow rate waveform is imposed at the inlet, while at the outlets the RCR parameters of the Windkessel model are tuned in order to match the experimentally measured fractions of flow rate exiting each domain outlet during an entire cardiac cycle. Then, the MRI data are used to validate the results of the hemodynamic simulations. As expected, with a rigid-wall model the computed flow rate waveforms at the outlets do not show the time lag respect to the inlet waveform conversely found in MRI data. We therefore evaluate the effect of wall compliance by using a linear elastic model with homogeneous and isotropic properties and changing the value of the Young's modulus. A stochastic analysis based on the polynomial chaos approach is adopted, which allows continuous response surfaces to be obtained in the parameter space starting from a few deterministic simulations. Results: The flow rate waveform can be accurately reproduced by the compliant simulations in the ascending aorta; on the other hand, in the aortic arch and in the descending aorta, the experimental time delay can be matched with low values of the Young's modulus, close to the average value estimated from experiments. However, by decreasing the Young's modulus the underestimation of the peak flow rate becomes more significant. As for the velocity maps, we found a generally good qualitative agreement of simulations with MRI data. The main difference is that the simulations overestimate the extent of reverse flow regions or predict reverse flow when it is absent in the experimental data. Finally, a significant sensitivity to wall compliance of instantaneous shear stresses during large part of the cardiac cycle period is observed; the variability of the time-averaged wall shear stresses remains however very low. Conclusions: In summary, a successful integration of hemodynamic simulations and of MRI data for a patient-specific simulation has been shown. The wall compliance seems to have a significant impact on the numerical predictions; a larger wall elasticity generally improves the agreement with experimental data.
Investigation of pulsatile flowfield in healthy thoracic aorta models

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in the western world. Complex hemodynamics plays a critical role in the development of aortic dissection and atherosclerosis, as well as many other diseases. Since fundamental fluid mechanics are important for the understanding of the blood flow in the cardiovascular circulatory system of the human body aspects, a joint experimental and numerical study was conducted in this study to determine the distributions of wall shear stress and pressure and oscillatory WSS index, and to examine their correlation with the aortic disorders, especially dissection. Experimentally, the Phase-Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PC-MRI) method was used to acquire the true geometry of a normal human thoracic aorta, which was readily converted into a transparent thoracic aorta model by the rapid prototyping (RP) technique. The thoracic aorta model was then used in the in vitro experiments and computations. Simulations were performed using the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) code ACE+((R)) to determine flow characteristics of the three-dimensional, pulsatile, incompressible, and Newtonian fluid in the thoracic aorta model. The unsteady boundary conditions at the inlet and the outlet of the aortic flow were specified from the measured flowrate and pressure results during in vitro experiments. For the code validation, the predicted axial velocity reasonably agrees with the PC-MRI experimental data in the oblique sagittal plane of the thoracic aorta model. The thorough analyses of the thoracic aorta flow, WSSs, WSS index (OSI), and wall pressures are presented. The predicted locations of the maxima of WSS and the wall pressure can be then correlated with that of the thoracic aorta dissection, and thereby may lead to a useful biological significance. The numerical results also suggest that the effects of low WSS and high OSI tend to cause wall thickening occurred along the inferior wall of the aortic arch and the anterior wall of the brachiocephalic artery, similar implication reported in a number of previous studies.

Abstract:In order to fully understand the interaction between the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs) and the arterial bifurcations interface it is important to attain more detailed information on blood hemodynamics stresses by using an accurate and real model of the vascular system of the human. In this study, a computer simulation, which integrates dinically acquired of 73-year-old male patient with saccular AAA MR angiograms image is considered. The numerical predictions for 2D of two models (with and without saccular AAA) – axisymmetric, rigid wall Newtonian and non-Newtonian Carreau blood model are presented. The finite volume method performed by ANSYS-Fluent Package was used to model this problem. The blood hemodynamics is considered as steady state condition in two values of Reynolds numbers of laminar flow condition. Blood hemodynamics is calculated for an improved set of dimensionless values pointer parameters include the pressure dimensionless, dimensionless Wall Shear Stress (WSS) and flow velocity. The results show that at the turbulent flow, velocity is with highest fluctuation profile and generate some vortices near the inner wall of AAA. The highest WSS levels are obtained downstream of AAA and at bifurcation apex. The presence of AAA in flow path will increase blood velocity of the distal by 35% for laminar and about 42% for turbulent. Finally, the velocity profile was compared with previous literature and give good agreement at the same computational condition.

Abstract:It is important to obtain accurate boundary conditions (BCs) in hemodynamic simulations. This article aimed to improve the accuracy of BCs in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and analyze the differences in hemodynamics between healthy volunteers and patients with visceral arterial stenosis (VAS). The geometric models of seven cases were reconstructed using the magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) or computed tomography angiogram (CTA) imaging data. The physiological flow waveforms obtained from 2D Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PCMRI) were imposed on the aortic inlet and the visceral arteries' outlets. The individualized RCR values of the three-element Windkessel model were imposed on the aortic outlet. CFD simulations were run in the open-source software: svSolver. Two specific time points were selected to compare the hemodynamics of healthy volunteers and patients with VAS. The results suggested that blood in the stenotic visceral arteries flowed at high speed throughout the cardiac cycle. The low pressure is distributed at stenotic lesions. The wall shear stress (WSS) reached 4 Pa near stenotic locations. The low time average wall shear stress (TAWSS), high oscillatory shear index (OSI), and high relative residence time (RRT) concentrated in the abdominal aorta. Besides, the ratios of the areas with low TAWSS, high OSI, and high RRT to the computational domain were higher in patients with VAS than which in the healthy volunteers. The individualized BCs were used for hemodynamic simulations and results suggest that patients with stenosis have a higher risk of blood retention and atherosclerosis formation in the abdominal aorta.

Abstract:The worldwide lethal prevalence of atherosclerotic diseases has made it a crucial topic of research, the descending aorta is a major artery with complex geometry involving curvature, branches, and bifurcation leading to common iliac arteries. This paper aims to scrutinize the intricate blood flow patterns and the flow parameters with the increasing degree of stenosis in the infrarenal aorta, which has been accomplished through computational fluid dynamics modeling. A 3D CAD model of the healthy aortoiliac bifurcation was constructed from MR images, and three diseased models with 32%, 47%, and 71% occlusion in the infrarenal aorta region were constructed. At the inlet, pulsatile velocity and at the outlet pressure boundary conditions were applied, blood was considered Newtonian and turbulence was modeled using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The numerical simulation was carried out using finite volume method on ANSYS. The predicted hemodynamic parameters like velocity, wall shear stress (WSS), oscillating shear index (OSI), Q-Criterion and turbulence intensity were post-processed for all the models, the analysis of which provides an insight into the myriad processes involved in the inception and evolution of atherosclerosis. The transition of blood flow from laminar to turbulent with increase in the degree of stenosis is a very eminent feature of this study, turbulence is identified in cases with 47%, and 71% occlusion and is dominant in the latter.

The effect of entrance flow development on vortex formation and wall shear stress in a curved artery model

Abstract:We numerically investigate the effect of entrance condition on the spatial and temporal evolution of multiple three-dimensional vortex pairs and wall shear stress distribution in a curved artery model. We perform this study using a Newtonian blood-analog fluid subjected to a pulsatile flow with two inflow conditions. The first flow condition is fully developed while the second condition is undeveloped (i.e. uniform). We discuss the connection along the axial direction between regions of organized vorticity observed at various cross-sections of the model and compare results between the different entrance conditions. We model a human artery with a simple, rigid $180^\circ$ curved pipe with circular cross-section and constant curvature, neglecting effects of taper, torsion and elasticity. Numerical results are computed from a discontinuous high-order spectral element flow solver. The flow rate used in this study is physiological. We observe differences in secondary flow patterns, especially during the deceleration phase of the physiological waveform where multiple vortical structures of both Dean-type and Lyne-type coexist. We highlight the effect of the entrance condition on the formation of these structures and subsequent appearance of abnormal inner wall shear stresses - a potentially significant correlation since cardiovascular disease is known to progress along the inner wall of curved arteries under varying degrees of flow development.

Numerical investigation of different viscosity models on pulsatile blood flow of thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) in a patient-specific model

Abstract:Aortic aneurysm is one of the most common aortic diseases that can lead to unfortunate consequences. Numerical simulations have an important role in the prediction of the aftereffects of vascular diseases including aneurysm. In this research, numerical simulation of pulsatile blood flow is performed for a 3-dimensional patient-specific model of a thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA). Since the choice of blood viscosity model may have a significant impact on the simulation results, the effects of four non-Newtonian models of blood viscosity namely Carreau, Casson, Herschel-Bulkley, power low, and the Newtonian model on the wall shear stress (WSS) distribution, shear rate, and oscillatory shear index (OSI) have been analyzed. Simulation results showed that all the non-Newtonian and Newtonian models generally, predict similar patterns for blood flow and shear rate. At high flow rates in the cardiac cycle, the WSS value for all the models are similar to each other except for the power-law model due to the shear thinning behavior. All models predict high values of OSI on the inner wall of the ascending aorta and broad areas of the inner wall of the aneurysm sac. However, the Newtonian model predicts the OSI less than the non-Newtonian models in some areas of the aneurysm sac. Results indicated that the Newtonian model generally can predict the hemodynamic parameters of the blood flow similar to the non-Newtonian but for more precise analysis and to predict the regions prone to rupture and atherosclerosis, choosing a proper non-Newtonian model is recommended.
Computational study of aortic hemodynamics for patients with an abnormal aortic valve: The importance of secondary flow at the ascending aorta inlet

Abstract:Blood flow in the aorta is helical, but most computational studies ignore the presence of secondary flow components at the ascending aorta (AAo) inlet. The aim of this study is to ascertain the importance of inlet boundary conditions (BCs) in computational analysis of flow patterns in the thoracic aorta based on patient-specific images, with a particular focus on patients with an abnormal aortic valve. Two cases were studied: one presenting a severe aortic valve stenosis and the other with a mechanical valve. For both aorta models, three inlet BCs were compared; these included the flat profile and 1D through-plane velocity and 3D phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging derived velocity profiles, with the latter being used for benchmarking. Our results showed that peak and mean velocities at the proximal end of the ascending aorta were underestimated by up to 41% when the secondary flow components were neglected. The results for helical flow descriptors highlighted the strong influence of secondary velocities on the helical flow structure in the AAo. Differences in all wall shear stress (WSS)-derived indices were much more pronounced in the AAo and aortic arch (AA) than in the descending aorta (DAo). Overall, this study demonstrates that using 3D velocity profiles as inlet BC is essential for patient-specific analysis of hemodynamics and WSS in the AAo and AA in the presence of an abnormal aortic valve. However, predicted flow in the DAo is less sensitive to the secondary velocities imposed at the inlet; hence, the 1D through-plane profile could be a sufficient inlet BC for studies focusing on distal regions of the thoracic aorta.

Abstract:Murine models have been widely used to investigate the mechanobiology of aortic atherosclerosis and dissections, which develop preferably at different anatomic locations of aorta. Based MRI and finite element analysis with fluid‐structure interaction, we numerically investigated factors that may affect the blood flow and structural mechanics of rat aorta. The results indicated that aortic root motion greatly increases time‐averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), relative residence time (RRT), displacement of the aorta, and enhances helical flow pattern but has limited influence on effective stress, which is highly modulated by blood pressure. Moreover, the influence of the motion component on these indicators is different with axial motion more obvious than planar motion. Surrounding fixation of the intercostal arteries and the branch vessels on aortic arch would reduce the influence of aortic root motion. The compliance of the aorta has different influences at different regions, leading to decrease in TAWSS and helical flow, increase in OSI, RRT at the aortic arch, but has reversed effects on the branch vessels. When compared with the steady flow, the pulsatile blood flow would obviously increase the WSS, the displacement, and the effective stress in most regions. In conclusion, to accurately quantify the blood flow and structural mechanics of rat aorta, the motion of the aortic root, the compliance of aortic wall, and the pulsation of blood flow should be considered. Abstract:Hemodynamic factors such as the wall shear stress play an important role in the pathogenesis and treatment of cerebral aneurysms. In present study, we apply computational fluid–structure interaction analyses on cerebral aneurysms with two different constitutive relations for aneurismal wall in order to investigate the effect of the aneurismal wall mechanical properties on the simulation results. We carry out these analyses by using two patient-specific models of cerebral aneurysms of different sizes located in different branches of the circle of Willis. The models are constructed from 3D rotational angiography image data and blood flow dynamics is studied under physiologically representative waveform of inflow. From the patient models analyzed in this investigation, we find that the deformations of cerebral aneurysms are very small. But due to the nonlinear character of the Navier–Stokes equations, these small deformations could have significant influences on the flow characteristics. In addition, we find that the aneurismal-wall mechanical properties have great effects on the deformation distribution of the aneurysm, which also affects the wall shear stress distribution and flow patterns. Therefore, how to define a proper constitutive relation for aneurismal wall should be considered carefully in the hemodynamic simulation.
Effect of aortic bifurcation geometry on pressure and peak wall stress in abdominal aorta: Fluid-structure interaction study

Abstract:Background and objective: Geometry of aorto-iliac bifurcation may affect pressure and wall stress in aorta and thus potentially serve as a predictor of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), similarly to hypertension. Methods: Effect of aorto-iliac bifurcation geometry was investigated via parametric analysis based on two-way weakly coupled fluid-structure interaction simulations. The arterial wall was modelled as isotropic hyperelastic monolayer, and non-Newtonian behaviour was introduced for the fluid. Realistic boundary conditions of the pulsatile blood flow were used on the basis of experiments in literature and their time shift was tailored to the pulse wave velocity in the model to obtain physiological wave shapes. Eighteen idealized and one patient-specific geometries of human aortic tree with common iliac and renal arteries were considered with different angles between abdominal aorta (AA) and both iliac arteries and different area ratios (AR) of iliac and aortic luminal cross sections. Results: Peak wall stress (PWS) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were insensitive to the aorto-iliac angles but sensitive to the AR: when AR decreased by 50%, the PWS and SBP increased by up to 18.4% and 18.8%, respectively. Conclusions: Lower AR (as a result of the iliac stenosis or aging), rather than the aorto-iliac angles increases the BP in the AA and may be thus a risk factor for the AAA development.

Abstract:We recently demonstrated the reduction of the unified continuum and variational multiscale formulation to a computationally efficient fluid-structure interaction (FSI) formulation via three modeling assumptions pertaining to the vascular wall. Similar to the coupled momentum method introduced by Figueroa et al., the resulting semi-discrete formulation yields a monolithically coupled FSI system posed in an Eulerian frame of reference with only a minor modification of the fluid boundary integral. To achieve uniform second-order temporal accuracy and user-controlled high-frequency algorithmic damping, we adopt the generalized- α method for uniform temporal discretization of the entire coupled system. In conjunction with a fully consistent, segregated predictor multi-corrector algorithm preserving the block structure of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in the implicit solver’s associated linear system, a three-level nested block preconditioner is adopted for improved representation of the Schur complement. In this work, we apply our reduced unified continuum formulation to an appropriately prestressed patient-specific abdominal aortic aneurysm and investigate the effects of varying spatial distributions of wall properties on hemodynamic and vascular wall quantities of interest.
Personalized numerical simulation for hemodynamics of abdominal aortic aneurysm: analysis of simulation results sensitivity to the input boundary conditions

Abstract:The analysis was performed for input condition sensitivity of hemodynamic simulation performed for a zone of abdominal aortic aneurysm. We took three versions of patient-specific configurations of aneurysm decease and computed the haemodynamics with different spatial and velocity profiles at the aorta inlet. Their impact on hemodynamic characteristics was evaluated. At total, the study was performed for three spatial variants (uniform, parabolic, and parabolic-and-secondary-flow velocity profiles) and three versions of time behavior of velocity profiles: this produces nine cases for every of three chosen geometries. The study demonstrated that one can neglect the impact of the spatial profile for inlet velocity (including the non-coaxial velocity vector components). Meanwhile, the value of reverse diastolic flow is significant for the solution. However, simulation in the zone of abdominal aortic aneurysm does not demonstrate great differences in simulation results for the values of wall shear stress and velocity for the data averaged over a cardiac cycle. For the distribution of the oscillation index of shear, the maximum deviation from the basic solution is about ∼ 10 %, which is quite acceptable for clinical applications.

Three-dimensional numerical simulation of hemodynamics in human aortic arch

Abstract:Objective The key techniques for geometry reconstruction based on Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs) was elaborated. The three-dimensional numerical simulation of blood flow in human aortic arch was performed to provide fundamentals in genesis of aortic dissection and arteriosclerosis.M ethods Digital geometry reconstruction based on the clinical Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs) was made by using image analysis. Pulsating flow rate were imposed on the CFD model as boundary conditions and three-dimensional blood flow field in the aortic arch was numerically modeled. Results Distributions of blood velocity, pressure, wall shear stress (WSS) in the human aortic arch at different point during one cardiac circle were determined by calculation.C onclusion The key techniques used in geometry reconstruction is helpful to carry out the further more research in bio-fluid mechanics. Numerical simulation of the blood flow in the present study could play an essential role in clinic diagnosis and treatment of aortic dissection and arteriosclerosis.

Time-dependent simulation of blood flow through an abdominal aorta with iliac arteries

Abstract:Atherosclerosis is one of the important diseases of the circulatory system because atherosclerotic plaques cause significant disruption of blood flow. Therefore, it is very important to properly understand these processes and skillfully simulate blood flow. In our work, we consider blood flow through an abdominal aorta with iliac arteries, assuming that the right iliac artery is narrowed by an atherosclerotic lesion. Blood flow is simulated using the laminar, standard k - ω and standard k - ϵ models. The obtained results show that despite the use of identical initial conditions, the distribution of velocity flow and wall shear stress depends on the choice of flow simulation model. For the k - ϵ model, we obtain higher values of speed and wall shear stress on atherosclerotic plaque than in the other two models. The laminar and k - ω models predict larger areas where reverse blood flow occurs in the area behind the atherosclerotic lesion. This effect is associated with negative wall shear stress. These two models give very similar results. The results obtained by us, and those reported in the literature, indicate that k - ω model is the most suitable for blood flow analysis.

Abstract:Blood flow dynamics plays a crucial role in the growth and rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms. The aim of this study was to analyze the possibility of predicting aneurysmal rupture by numerical investigations based on diagnostic images. The blood flow dynamics was analyzed in a patient-specific abdominal aortic aneurysm, reconstructed from CT images of an aneurysm while it was rupturing. The patient-specific geometry was virtually repaired in order to obtain a non-ruptured model representative of the geometry immediately preceding the rupture. To reproduce physiological conditions, numerical simulations were performed under pulsatile flow conditions, and blood was modelled as a non-Newtonian fluid, using the Carreau rheological model. Hemodynamic parameters that influence the rupture of the aneurysm were investigated, and their possible association with vascular disease was discussed. The results of the numerical simulations indicated regions of slow recirculation and low values of Time Averaged Wall Shear Stress (TAWSS) in the region of rupture. Unlike literature results, a high Oscillatory Shear Index (OSI) was not clearly found in this region. Nevertheless, just in the region where the rupture will occur, high values of Endothelial Cell Activation Potential index (ECAP) were found. This index is therefore extremely significant for assessing the vulnerability of the aortic wall and locating the critical rupture region.

Abstract:Numerical simulations to evaluate thoracic aortic hemodynamics include a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach or fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach. While CFD neglects the arterial deformation along the cardiac cycle by applying a rigid wall simplification, on the other side the FSI simulation requires a lot of assumptions for the material properties definition and high computational costs. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of a new strategy, based on Radial Basis Functions (RBF) mesh morphing technique and transient simulations, able to introduce the patient-specific changes in aortic geometry during the cardiac cycle. Starting from medical images, aorta models at different phases of cardiac cycle were reconstructed and a transient shape deformation was obtained by proper activating incremental RBF solutions during the simulation process. The results, in terms of main hemodynamic parameters, were compared with two performed CFD simulations for the aortic model at minimum and maximum volume. Our implemented strategy copes the actual arterial variation during cardiac cycle with high accuracy, capturing the impact of geometrical variations on fluid dynamics, overcoming the complexity of a standard FSI approach.

Abstract:An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is an enlargement of the abdominal aorta that can become a life-threatening disease. The pulsatile blood flow exhibits intricate laminar patterns in the abdominal portion of the human aorta under normal resting conditions, whereas secondary flows are caused by adjacent branches and abnormal vessel geometries. If a pathological disorder (e.g., aneurysm) alters the structural composition of the artery wall, the flow dynamics become more complex. In this study, we analyzed the hemodynamics of pulsatile blood flow in three-dimensional AAA models. Computational predictions of hemodynamic changes were performed considering idealized models for four severe proximal neck angulations of symmetric aneurysms assuming conditions of laminar flow and a rigid artery wall. The predictions were based on computational fluid dynamics throughout the cardiac cycle. Postprocessing was used to visualize the numerical findings. The hemodynamic changes in factors such as velocity, flow streamline, pressure, and wall shear stress were obtained and visualized. The resulting blood flow through the severely angulated proximal neck of the abdominal aorta caused strong turbulence and asymmetric flow inside the aneurysm sac, leading to blood recirculation, especially during diastole. The simulation results showed the formation of regions with high and low wall shear stress, turbulent flow, and recirculation in the aneurysm sac depending on the angulation, which could have led to aortic wall weakness.

Abstract:PURPOSE:The flow velocity of visceral arteries was measured by 2D PCMRI to produce the patient-specific flow BC imposed on the outlets of visceral arteries in CFD simulation. This modified method aimed to improve the CFD accuracy in the abdominal aorta and visceral arteries.METHODS:A volunteer underwent non-contrast-enhanced MRA to scan the abdominal aorta and visceral arteries, and 2D PCMRI to obtain the flow velocity of the aforementioned vessels. The three-dimensional geometric model was reconstructed using the MRI scan data of the abdominal aorta and visceral arteries. The flow waveforms measured by 2D PCMRI were processed and then imposed on the aortic inlet and the outlets of all visceral arteries as the flow BC. The RCR parameters of the three elements Windkessel model were modulated and imposed on the aortic outlet. CFD simulation was run in the open-source software: svSolver. The same volunteer underwent 4D flow MRI to compare the flow field with those extracted from CFD results.RESULTS:Four specific time points in a cardiac cycle and three cross-sectional planes of aorta were selected to analyze the flow field, pressure and wall shear stress (WSS) from CFD. The flow waveforms and streamlines of CFD agreed with those of 4D flow MRI. The pressure waveforms, pressure distribution and WSS distribution from CFD conformed with the physiological condition of human body.CONCLUSION:These results suggest this modified CFD method may yield reasonable flow field, pressure and WSS in the abdominal aorta and visceral arteries.
