Abstract:It is well established that bariatric surgery, the most effective method to achieve long-term weight loss in obese subjects, reverses enhanced preference and intake of sweet/fatty foods. Although taste and odor preference changes following bariatric surgery have been previously described, their time course and relationship to weight loss remains an issue. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between taste and odor preference changes and successful weight loss following bariatric surgery. A cross-sectional study was performed on 195 human subjects with body mass index (BMI) above 30 (at least class I obesity), who were scheduled to receive (n = 54) or had previously received (n = 141) Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). A Self-Assessment Manikin test was used to measure each participant's affective reaction (ranging from pleasure to displeasure) to a variety of food-related and odor-related pictures. Results confirmed earlier reports about changes in sweet/fatty foods preference after surgery and revealed a shift in preference toward less calorie-dense foods. Relatedly, endorsements of "favorite" foods were mostly sweet/fatty foods in subjects awaiting surgery but were shifted toward more healthy choices, particularly vegetables, in subjects post-RYGB surgery. However, food preference ratings trended toward pre-surgical levels as the time since surgery increased. Answers to open-ended questions about why their diet changed post-surgery revealed that changes in cravings, rather than changes in taste per se, were the major factor. Surprisingly, patients rating a coffee taste as more pleasing after surgery had a lower post-surgical BMI. No associations of odors with change in BMI were apparent. Results showed that following bariatric surgery taste preferences are significantly altered and that these changes correlate with lowered BMI. However, these changes fade as time since surgery lengthens. These results may suggest diagnostic criteria to identify people at risk for less than optimal changes in BMI following bariatric surgery.

Abstract:The influence of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) on taste preferences and the pleasurable aspects of appetite may be mediated through its effects on gut hormones, potentially affecting weight loss results. Research indicates that the nature of the MBS performed significantly impacts food cravings in the year following the procedure, with no clear relationship to psychological factors or pre-surgery eating behaviors. During the period from August 2021 to August 2022, a group of adult patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 kg/m 2 or above, or 35 kg/m 2 or above with obesity-related medical complications, underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), or sleeve gastrectomy (SG) at a tertiary academic center focused on MBS. This research included 294 patients who completed the Taste Desire and Enjoyment Change Questionnaire (TDECQ) one year after their surgical procedures, which were primary RYGB, OAGB, or SG. Most participants noted changes in their taste perception, cravings, and enjoyment of flavors after undergoing SG, RYGB, and OAGB. The study's findings suggest that the type of MBS significantly affects taste preferences. Additionally, RYGB and OAGB were associated with a more substantial decrease in the craving for sweet and fatty flavors relative to SG.

Changes in patients' taste acuity after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass for clinically severe obesity

Abstract:Objective: Patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) for clinically severe obesity often report an aversion to sweet foods and meat. This study was designed to determine whether changes in taste acuity occur after RYGB. Design: This prospective, repeated measures trial evaluated acuity for sweet (sucrose) and bitter (urea) tastes, zinc status, and reported changes in taste perceptions in patients undergoing RYGB for weight reduction. Subjects: Taste acuity and serum zinc level were measured in 14 subjects, 6 men and 8 women (mean preoperative body mass index [calculated as kg/m2] = 60.8 +/- 11.8 and mean age = 38.4 +/- 6 years), before surgery and 6 and 12 weeks after surgery. Inquiries regarding taste preferences were made at each postoperative visit with specific reference to sweets and meat. Serum zinc level was measured at the same visit. A noncontrolled comparison group of 4 subjects who were consuming a very-low-calorie diet also underwent taste acuity testing at similar intervals. Main outcome measures: The main outcome measures were recognition taste thresholds, serum zinc levels, and taste preference changes. Statistical analysis: Analysis of variance with repeated measures over time, Pearson correlation coefficients, and post hoc analysis of variance were used to analyze data. Results: Mean recognition thresholds for sucrose were 0.047 +/- 0.03 mol/L preoperatively and fell significantly to 0.024 +/- 0.01 and 0.019 +/- 0.01 mol/L at 6 and 12 weeks postoperatively, respectively. Overall, there were no significant differences in taste thresholds for urea over time; a significant difference was noted, however, in the pattern of change for urea between patients who reported an aversion to meats and those who did not. Zinc concentrations did not change during the study. Application/conclusions: At 6 weeks postoperatively, all patients reported that foods tasted sweeter, and they modified food selection accordingly. Six patients reported an aversion to meats associated with increased nausea and vomiting. Acuity for sweet and bitter tastes may need to be considered when planning dietary modifications for patients undergoing RYGB.

Abstract:Obesity surgery is a highly efficacious treatment for obesity and its comorbidities. The underlying mechanisms of weight loss after obesity surgery are not yet fully understood. Changes to taste function could be a contributing factor. However, the pattern of change in different taste domains and among obesity surgery operations is not consistent in the literature. A systematic search was performed to identify all articles investigating gustation in human studies following bariatric procedures. A total of 3323 articles were identified after database searches, searching references and deduplication, and 17 articles were included. These articles provided evidence of changes in the sensory and reward domains of taste following obesity procedures. No study investigated the effect of obesity surgery on the physiological domain of taste. Taste detection sensitivity for sweetness increases shortly after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Additionally, patients have a reduced appetitive reward value to sweet stimuli. For the subgroup of patients who experience changes in their food preferences after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, changes in taste function may be underlying mechanisms for changing food preferences which may lead to weight loss and its maintenance. However, data are heterogeneous; the potential effect dilutes over time and varies significantly between different procedures.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDBariatric surgeries are the most effective treatments for successful and sustained weight loss, but individuals vary in treatment response. Understanding the neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms accounting for this variation could lead to the development of personalized therapeutic approaches and improve treatment outcomes. The primary objectives of this study were to investigate changes in taste preferences and taste-induced brain responses after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) and to identify potential taste-related predictors of weight loss.METHODSFemales, ages 18 to 55, with a body mass index greater than or equal to 35 kg/m2, and approved for bariatric surgery at the Johns Hopkins Center for Bariatric Surgery were recruited for participation. Demographics, anthropometrics, liking ratings, and neural responses to varying concentrations of sucrose plus fat mixtures were assessed before and after surgery via visual analog scales and functional MRI.RESULTSBariatric surgery produced decreases in liking for sucrose-sweetened mixtures. Greater preference for sucrose-sweetened mixtures before surgery was associated with greater weight loss in RYGB, but not VSG. In the RYGB group only, individuals who showed lower taste-induced activation in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) before surgery and greater changes in taste-induced VTA activation 2 weeks following surgery experienced increased weight loss.CONCLUSIONThe anatomical and/or metabolic changes associated with RYGB may more effectively "reset" the neural processing of reward stimuli, thereby rescuing the blunted activation in the mesolimbic pathway found in patients with obesity. Abstract:Objective The objective of this study was to investigate changes in hedonic hunger, eating behavior, and food reward and preferences at 1‐year (1Y) follow‐up after an initial weight loss (WL) induced by a 10‐week, very low‐energy diet alone (controls) or in combination with bariatric surgery. Methods Patients scheduled for sleeve gastrectomy or Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass and controls were recruited. Body weight/composition, hedonic hunger (Power of Food Scale), eating behavior traits (Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire and Three‐Factor Eating Questionnaire), and food reward and preferences (computerized behavioral task) were measured at baseline, 11 weeks, and 1Y follow‐up. Results Changes in anthropometric variables were comparable across groups in the initial phase (week 11), and hedonic hunger decreased overall. The bariatric‐surgery groups continued to lose body weight and fat mass, whereas weight regain was seen in controls at 1Y follow‐up. Decreases in emotional eating, hunger, disinhibition, and food reward and increases in dietary restraint were seen at 1Y follow‐up in the bariatric‐surgery groups only. Conclusions Continued WL with bariatric surgery is paralleled by favorable changes in eating behavior and food reward and preferences. By contrast, controls experienced weight regain at 1Y follow‐up and no changes in eating behavior. These striking differences are likely to be important in the long‐term WL management of individuals with severe obesity.

Abstract:Background: After Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery, patients report a shift in food preferences away from high-energy foods. Objective: We aimed to elucidate the potential mechanisms underlying this shift in food preferences by assessing changes in neural responses to food pictures and odors before and after RYGB. Additionally, we investigated whether altered neural responsivity was associated with changes in plasma endocannabinoid and ghrelin concentrations. Design: 19 RYGB patients (4 men; age 41 ± 10 years; BMI 41 ± 1 kg/m2 before; BMI 36 ± 1 kg/m2 after) participated in this study. Before and two months after RYGB surgery, they rated their food preferences using the Macronutrient and Taste Preference Ranking Task and BOLD fMRI responses towards pictures and odors of high-, and low-energy foods and non-food items were measured. Blood samples were taken to determine plasma endocannabinoid and ghrelin concentrations pre- and post-surgery. Results: Patients demonstrated a shift in food preferences away from high-fat/sweet and towards low-energy/savory food products, which correlated with decreased superior parietal lobule responsivity to high-energy food odor and a reduced difference in precuneus responsivity to high-energy versus low-energy food pictures. In the anteroventral prefrontal cortex (superior frontal gyrus) the difference in deactivation towards high-energy versus non-food odors reduced. The precuneus was less deactivated in response to all cues. Plasma concentrations of anandamide were higher after surgery, while plasma concentrations of other endocannabinoids and ghrelin did not change. Alterations in appetite-related hormone concentrations did not correlate with changes in neural responsivity. Conclusions: RYGB leads to changed responsivity of the frontoparietal control network that orchestrates top-down control to high-energy food compared to low-energy food and non-food cues, rather than in reward related brain regions, in a satiated state. Together with correlations with the shift in food preference from high- to low-energy foods this indicates a possible role in new food preference formation.

Abstract:Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is the most performed bariatric surgery worldwide. However, this surgery may be associated with long-term weight regain and severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), sometimes necessitating conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) to improve quality of life (QoL). We conducted a systematic review on QoL measures following the conversion of SG to RYGB. We searched various databases for studies conducted between January 2005 and September 2023. Four studies, involving 196 participants in total, met the inclusion criteria. Different assessment methods were used to evaluate QoL following the conversion. In the included studies, we observed that GERD symptoms and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use both decreased following conversion to RYGB. Excess weight loss (EWL) was also observed in all studies.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effects of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy on weight control in morbidly obese patients.Methods 48 patients with morbidly obesity underwent obese surgery (laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy) from Dec.2013 to Dec.2015,and 1-year follow-up study.The general situation of obesity and biochemical indicators were compared and analyzed.Results There were 20 cases in gastric bypass group and 28 cases in sleeve gastrectomy group.The excess weight loss percentage(％EWL)was 73±0.04 in gastric bypass group and 59±0.05 in sleeve gastrectomy group(P=-0.03).There was no statistical difference in weight change between the two groups.Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) level in gastric bypass group was significantly lower than that in sleeve gastrectomy group at 1 year after surgery (2.42±0.16 vs 3.29±0.20,P=0.006),while folic acid level was significantly higher than that in sleeve gastrectomy group(15.58±1.99 vs 7.59±1.59,P=0.022).Conclusions The one-year follow up shows there is no significant difference in the efficacy of weight control between the two groups.Gastric bypass group may be superior to gastrectomy group in nutrition indexes.However,it is just a short-term postoperative efficacy in morbidly obese patients,long-term weight control effects and obesity related diseases control need to be further explored.
Behavioral Interventions to Attenuate Driven Overeating and Weight Regain After Bariatric Surgery

Abstract:Weight regain after bariatric surgery is associated with problematic eating behaviors that have either recurred after a period of improvement or are new-onset behaviors. Problematic eating behaviors after bariatric surgery have been conceptualized in different ways in the literature, such as having a food addiction and experiencing a loss of control of eating. The intersection of these constructs appears to be driven overeating defined as patients' experiences of reduced control of their eating which results in overeating behavior. The purpose of this review is to define patient experiences of driven overeating through the behavioral expression of emotion-based eating, reward-based eating, and executive functioning deficits-namely impulsivity-which is associated with weight regain after having bariatric surgery. Delineating concepts in this way and determining treatment strategies accordingly may reduce distress related to the inevitable return of increased hunger, cravings, portion sizes, and tolerance for highly palatable foods after surgery. Along with standard behavioral weight maintenance strategies, topics including acceptance, motivation, emotion-based eating, reward-based/impulsive eating, physical activity, and self-compassion are discussed. These concepts have been adapted for patients experiencing weight regain after having bariatric surgery and may be particularly helpful in attenuating driven overeating and weight regain.

Abstract:The relationship between postoperative dietary intake and weight loss after bariatric surgery remains unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published between January 2000 and May 2023, reporting weight loss outcomes, and dietary intake before and after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. A total of 42 studies were included. There was no detectable difference in dietary intake between the two procedures. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass induced an average decrease in energy intake of 886 kcal/day at 12-month post-surgery; however, there was no correlation between daily energy intake and weight loss. These findings show a substantial reduction of energy intake in the first year after bariatric surgery but do not support a link between lower energy intake and greater weight loss.

Abstract:Background: Bariatric surgery is one of the main treatments for severity obesity, but weight regain after surgery is an important issue. Objectives: To compare the clinical and nutritional profiles of good and poor weight loss responders in the late postoperative period after bariatric surgery. Methods: A cross-sectional study with patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in a University Hospital. Patients were divided into good weight loss responders (GWLR) and poor weight loss responders (PWLR) defined as ≥ 50% or < 50% excess weight loss (EWL), respectively, at least 2 years post-surgery. Results: The sample included 204 individuals (87.7% women; mean age 50.15 ± 11.1 years; mean time after surgery 67.38 ± 30.76 months). Two years post-surgery, 71.1% were considered GWLR and 28.9% PWLR (mean EWL 72.33% ± 13.86%, and 35.06% ± 12.10%, respectively; p = 0.000). Weight regain was < 10% for 36.3% of patients, 10.1-20% for 36.3%, and > 20% for 21.3%, compared with the lowest post-surgery weight. Among PWLR, 49.0% regained > 20% of the lowest post-surgery weight. GWLR lost most weight at all time points analyzed (p < 0.05). GWLR presented improvement or remission of diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension more frequently compared to PWLR (p < 0.05). Eating patterns was similar between GWLR and PWLR (p > 0.05, study's power 100%). Quality of life improved in 79.5% of the total study sample, with greater improvements in the GWLR (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Greater weight loss correlated with improved remission in comorbidities and better quality of life.
Long-term effect of sleeve gastrectomy vs Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in people living with severe obesity: a phase III multicentre randomised controlled trial (SleeveBypass)

Abstract:Background: Sleeve gastrectomy is the most performed metabolic surgical procedure worldwide. However, conflicting results offer no clear evidence about its long-term clinical comparability to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This study aims to determine their equivalent long-term weight loss effects. Methods: This randomised open-label controlled trial was conducted from 2012 until 2017 in two Dutch bariatric hospitals with a 5-year follow-up (last follow-up July 29th, 2022). Out of 4045 patients, 628 were eligible for metabolic surgery and were randomly assigned to sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (intention-to-treat). The primary endpoint was weight loss, expressed by percentage excess body mass index (BMI) loss. The predefined clinically relevant equivalence margin was -13% to 13%. Secondary endpoints included percentage total kilograms weight loss, obesity-related comorbidities, quality of life, morbidity, and mortality. This trial is registered with Dutch Trial Register NTR4741: https://onderzoekmetmensen.nl/nl/trial/25900. Findings: 628 patients were randomised between sleeve gastrectomy (n = 312) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (n = 316) (mean age 43 [standard deviation (SD), 11] years; mean BMI 43.5 [SD, 4.7]; 81.8% women). Excess BMI loss at 5 years was 58.8% [95% CI, 55%-63%] after sleeve gastrectomy and 67.1% [95% CI, 63%-71%] after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (difference 8.3% [95% CI, -12.5% to -4.0%]). This was within the predefined margin (P < 0.001). Total weight loss at 5 years was 22.5% [95% CI, 20.7%-24.3%] after sleeve gastrectomy and 26.0% [95% CI, 24.3%-27.8%] after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (difference 3.5% [95% CI, -5.2% to -1.7%]). In both groups, obesity-related comorbidities significantly improved after 5 years. Dyslipidaemia improved more frequently after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (83%, 54/65) compared to sleeve gastrectomy (62%, 44/71) (P = 0.006). De novo gastro-oesophageal reflux disease occurred more frequently after sleeve gastrectomy (16%, 46/288) vs Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (4%, 10/280) (P < 0.001). Minor complications were more frequent after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (5%, 15/316) compared to sleeve gastrectomy (2%, 5/312). No statistically significant differences in major complications and health-related quality of life were encountered. Interpretation: In people living with obesity grades 2 and 3, sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass had clinically comparable excess BMI loss according to the predefined definition for equivalence. However, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass showed significantly higher total weight loss and significant advantages in secondary outcomes, including dyslipidaemia and GERD, yet at a higher rate of minor complications. Abstract:Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, and bariatric surgery is considered the primary treatment for long-term weight loss and managing obesity-related health issues. Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) are the most performed procedures. Nutritional deficiencies are a significant concern following bariatric surgery and can have serious consequences. This study aims to compare the incidence of nutritional deficiencies in patients undergoing RYGB and SG. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the nutritional status of 505 consecutive patients who underwent either RYGB or SG between January and December 2019. Data were collected regarding vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, PTH, magnesium, hemoglobin, iron, ferritin, and transferrin at preoperative, 6-month, and 12-month intervals post-surgery. The RYGB group showed significantly higher excess weight loss. Vitamin B12, hemoglobin, and ferritin levels were consistently higher in the SG group throughout the study. Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent, with no significant difference between the groups. Vitamin B12 deficiency was significantly more common in the RYGB group (6 months: 17.46% vs. 4.69%, p < 0.001; 12 months: 16.74% vs. 0.93%, p < 0.001). Despite differences in their mechanisms, bariatric surgeries were associated with nutritional deficiencies. It is crucial to efficiently assess, prevent, and manage these deficiencies tailored to each surgical procedure.

Abstract:Introduction: Bariatric surgery is known to be the most effective treatment for weight loss in obese patients and for the rapid remission of obesity-related comorbidities. These short-term improvements result from not only limited digestion or absorption but also dynamic changes in metabolism throughout the whole body. However, short-term metabolism studies associated with bariatric surgery in Asian individuals have not been reported. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term metabolome changes in the serum promoted by laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and to determine the underlying mechanisms that affect obesity-related comorbidities. Methods: Serum samples were collected from Korean patients who underwent RYGB or SG before and 4 weeks after the surgery. Metabolomic and lipidomic profiling was performed using UPLC-Orbitrap-MS, and data were analyzed using statistical analysis. Results: Metabolites mainly related to amino acids, lipids (fatty acids, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, glycerolipids) and bile acids changed after surgery, and these changes were associated with the lowering of risk factors for obesity-related diseases such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), type 2 diabetes (T2D) and atherosclerosis. Interestingly, the number of significantly altered metabolites related to the lipid metabolism were greater in SG than in RYGB. Furthermore, the metabolites related to amino acid metabolism were significantly changed only after SG, whereas bile acid changed significantly only following RYGB. Conclusion: These differences could result from anatomical differences between the two surgeries and could be related to the gut microbiota. This study provides crucial information to expand the knowledge of the common but different molecular mechanisms involved in obesity and obesity-related comorbidities affected by each bariatric procedure.
Anemia, iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies after sleeve gastrectomy compared to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: The effective treatment of postoperative anemia and nutritional deficiencies is critical for the successful management of bariatric patients. However, the evidence for nutritional risk or support of bariatric patients remains scarce. The aims of this study were to assess current evidence of the association between 2 methods of bariatric surgery, sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), and postoperative anemia and nutritional deficiencies. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for English-language studies using a list of keywords. Reference lists from relevant review articles were also searched. In the authors' meta-analysis, they included studies with a duration of>12 months, those comparing SG with RYGB, and those with available outcome data for postoperative anemia and iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies. Of 36 potentially relevant studies, 9 met the inclusion criteria. Data were combined by means of a fixed-effects model or random-effects model. Results: Compared with the SG group, the odds ratio for postoperative vitamin B12 deficiency in the RYGB group was 3.55 (95% confidence interval, 1.26-10.01; P<.001). In the subgroup analysis, studies in which prophylactic iron or vitamin B12 was administered lost significance in the odds ratio for postoperative vitamin B12 deficiency. Conclusion: The authors' findings suggest that SG is more beneficial than RYGB with regard to postoperative vitamin B12 deficiency risk, whereas the 2 methods are comparable with regard to the risk of postoperative anemia and iron deficiency. Postoperative prophylactic iron and B12 supplementation, in addition to general multivitamin and mineral supplementation, is recommended based on the comparable deficiency risk of the 2 methods as indicated by subgroup analysis.

Abstract:Objective Bariatric surgery reduces sweet‐liking, but mechanisms remain unclear. We examined related brain responses. Methods A total of 24 nondiabetic bariatric surgery and 21 control participants with normal weight to overweight were recruited for an observational controlled cohort study. They underwent sucrose taste testing outside the scanner followed by stimulation with 0.40M and 0.10M sucrose compared with water during functional magnetic resonance imaging. A total of 21 bariatric participants repeated these procedures after surgery. Results Perceived sweet intensity was not different among the control, presurgery, or postsurgery groups. Bariatric participants' preferred sweet concentration decreased after surgery (0.52M to 0.29M; p = 0.008). Brain reward system (ventral tegmental area, ventral striatum, and orbitofrontal cortex) region of interest analysis showed that 0.40M sucrose activation (but not 0.10M) decreased after surgery. Sensory region (primary somatosensory and primary taste cortex) 0.40M sucrose activation was unchanged by surgery and did not differ between control and bariatric participants. Primary taste cortex activation to 0.10M sucrose solution was greater in postsurgical bariatric participants compared with control participants. Conclusions Bariatric surgery reduces the reward system response to sweet taste in women with obesity without affecting activity in sensory regions, which is consistent with reduced drive to consume sweet foods.

Abstract:Summary A systematic search was conducted in Medline Ovid, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up until March 2021 following PRISMA guidelines. Studies included evaluated ghrelin, GLP‐1, PYY or appetite sensation via visual analogue scales (VASs) before and after Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in adults. A multilevel model with random effects for study and follow‐up time points nested in study was fit to the data. The model included kcal consumption as a covariate and time points as moderators. Among the 2559 articles identified, k = 47 were included, among which k = 19 evaluated ghrelin, k = 40 GLP‐1, k = 22 PYY, and k = 8 appetite sensation. Our results indicate that fasting ghrelin levels are decreased 2 weeks post‐RYGB (p = 0.005) but do not differ from baseline from 6 weeks to 1‐year post‐RYGB.
