The mediating effect of self-leadership in the relationship between empathy and interpersonal competence of nursing college students

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between self-leadership, empathy ability, and interpersonal competence of nursing students, and to investigate the mediating effect of self-leadership and factors influencing interpersonal competence. For this, data were collected from 368 nursing students as research subjects, frequency analysis and descriptive statistical analysis were conducted, and Sobel verification was performed to verify Pearson's correlation coefficient, regression analysis and mediating effect. As a result of the study, first, it was found that nursing students' empathy ability had a significant effect on interpersonal competence. Second, it was found that nursing students' self-leadership had a significant effect on interpersonal competence. Third, it was found that self-leadership had a complete mediating effect in the relationship between empathy ability and interpersonal competence of nursing students. These findings will serve as the theoretical basis for developing programs to improve nursing students' interpersonal skills and provide implications for ways to improve nursing students' empathy and self-leadership.
