Abstract:Frost formation on evaporator fins significantly reduces their thermal performance, which can be handled via frost retardation and periodic defrosting methods. Focusing on electrical as well as thermal performance of evaporator fins, a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composite (CFRP) fin was fabricated for potential application in heat pump evaporators, and frost thickness on the fin for natural convection case was experimentally measured to analyze the effect of certain significant parameters. Data was collected for the development of frost thickness prediction models using artificial neural network (ANN), XGBoost regressor, and random forest. For conducting independent testing as validation, frost thickness values under three experimental conditions were measured. The developed ANN model exhibited excellent performance with MAE, RMSE, MAPE and R2 values of 0.0511, 0.06796, 5.279, and 0.9803, respectively. Furthermore, the ANN model exhibited the best performance among the three models investigated and yielded a 69.5%-reduction in RMSE in the prediction of independent data, compared with the random forest model, which yielded the lowest performance. A modified empirical correlation was developed using machine learning technique, which predicted 82% of the experimental data within an error bar of 30%.
