Abstract:Despite global vaccination, the respiratory threat COVID-19 pandemic is not finished, as the recent report of new variants worldwide. The use of face masks as droplet physical barrier is still of great importance. This work uses interface physics approach to suggest a method to increase the effectiveness of two-layer cotton face masks in blocking the traveling of droplets through its layers, by spraying a thin layer of edible oil on the mask´s outer layer, dispersed in ethanolic aqueous emulsion. After drying for 14 h, both treated and non-treated samples were tested in a constant droplet flux for 15 min. The low cost improvement increased the repellence of droplets by 475%, and the wetness pattern analysis showed an increased treated mask effectiveness by 52% against internal wetness accumulation, compared to regular non-treated masks. Consequently, an outer layer made advantageously hydrophobic is possibly effective in repelling the incoming saliva droplets, carrying nanostructures as corona viruses, forming a two-way physical droplet barrier. A colorimetric technique was developed to determine in a permanent way the wetness accumulation in mask layers through digital image analysis of water-soluble powder-dye spots. This method revealed a Hill-like sigmoid dynamic behavior for the adsorption/transfer of wetness in the mask layers.Graphical abstract
