Abstract:Health care is one of the most promising applications for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). In this review, we summarize recent advances in the three most popular health care-related applications of TENGs: microbial disinfection, interventional therapy and implantable microsystems. Furthermore, we discuss the evolution of important common technologies of TENGs in these three applications, which covers energy harvesting, energy storage and energy-efficient functional design. For these three promising applications, this paper explores their future technical roadmap and reveals a trend towards smaller, stronger, more effective and more controllable triboelectric devices and systems.

Abstract:Under the trend of the rapid development of the internet of things (IoT), sensing for dynamic behaviors is widely needed in many fields such as traffic management, industrial production, medical treatment, building health monitoring, etc. Due to the feature of power supply independence and excellent working performance under a low-frequency environment, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as sensors are attracting more and more attention. In this paper, a comprehensive review focusing on the recent advance of TENGs as sensors for dynamic behaviors is conducted. The structure and material are two major factors affecting the performance of sensors. Different structure designs are proposed to make the sensor suitable for different sensing occasions and improve the working performance of the sensors. As for materials, new materials with stronger abilities to gain or lose electrons are fabricated to obtain higher surface charge density. Improving the surface roughness of material by surface engineering techniques is another strategy to improve the output performance of TENG. Based on the advancement of TENG structures and materials, plenty of applications of TENG-based sensors have been developed such as city traffic management, human–computer interaction, health monitoring of infrastructure, etc. It is believed that TENG-based sensors will be gradually commercialized and become the mainstream sensors for dynamic sensing.

Abstract:The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) has subverted people’s lives, causing the rapid development of sensor technologies. However, traditional sensor energy sources, like batteries, suffer from the pollution problem and the limited lifetime for powering widely implemented electronics or sensors. Therefore, it is essential to obtain self-powered sensors integrated with renewable energy harvesters. The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), which can convert the surrounding mechanical energy into electrical energy based on the surface triboelectrification effect, was born of this background. This paper systematically introduces the working principle of the TENG-based self-powered sensor, including the triboelectrification effect, Maxwell’s displacement current, and quantitative analysis method. Meanwhile, this paper also reviews the recent application of TENG in different fields and summarizes the future development and current problems of TENG. We believe that there will be a rise of TENG-based self-powered sensors in the future.

Abstract:In the past decade, the exponential use of electronic devices has driven a substantial demand for sustainable, adaptable sensors and energy-harvesting systems. Projections indicate that the global sensor market will reach approximately 500 billion units by 2027, highlighting the urgent need for efficient power sources for these miniaturized devices. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as a promising solution for self-powered systems by converting ambient mechanical energy into electrical energy. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of TENGs, focusing on their operational modes, structural configurations, and the underlying mechanisms of triboelectrification, including electron transfer, ion transfer, and material transfer models. Furthermore, the review sheds light on advanced material designs and methodologies aimed at optimizing TENG performance. The manuscript also explores a broad spectrum of TENG applications, including energy harvesting from ambient mechanical sources, biomedical devices, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and smart agriculture. This timely review is expected to contribute significantly to the rapid technological advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and the development of next-generation self-powered sensors in the upcoming decade.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the conjunction of contact electrification and electrostatic induction, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can harvest mechanical energy dispersed in our environment. With the characteristics of simple structure, light weight, broad material availability, low cost, and high efficiency even at low operation frequency, TENG can serve as a promising alternative strategy for meeting the needs of distributed energy for the internet of things and network. The major potential applications of TENG can be summarized as four fields containing micro/nano power sources, self-powered sensors, large-scale blue energy, and direct high-voltage power sources. In this paper, the fundamental physics, output performance enhancement, and applications of TENGs are reviewed to timely summarize the development of TENGs and provide a guideline for future research.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Smart wearable technologies are augmenting human bodies beyond our biological capabilities in communication, healthcare and recreation. Energy supply and information acquisition are essential for wearable electronics, whereas the increasing demands in multifunction are raising the requirements for energy and sensor devices. The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), proven to be able to convert various mechanical energies into electricity, can fulfill either of these two functions and therefore has drawn extensive attention and research efforts worldwide. The everyday life of a human body produces considerable mechanical energies and, in the meantime, the human body communicates mainly through mechanical signals, such as sound, body gestures and muscle movements. Therefore, the TENG has been intensively studied to serve as either wearable sources or wearable self-powered sensors. Herein, the recent finding on the fundamental understanding of TENGs is revisited briefly, followed by a summary of recent advancements in TENG-based wearable power sources and self-powered sensors. The challenges and prospects of this area are given as well.

Abstract:Internet of Things and wearable technology's quick development have opened up a vast market for sensor systems. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) efficiently provide crucial infrastructure for a new generation of sensing devices that gather data using several self‐powered sensors in abundance. The recent progress in the development of TENGs applied in the sensor field is reviewed. Internet of Things and wearable technology's quick development have opened up a vast market for sensor systems. However, typical sensors' external power supplies' short lifespan and expensive maintenance restrict them from being used more widely. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), a recently created mechanical energy harvesting and self‐powered sensing device, show enormous promise to get over these restrictions. TENG can be used not only to power sensors instead of conventional chemical batteries but also be utilized to actualize sensing by taking advantage of the unique characteristics of the friction layer itself. Triboelectric nanogenerators efficiently provide crucial infrastructure for a new generation of sensing devices that gather data using several self‐powered sensors in abundance. The recent progress in the development of TENGs applied in the sensor field is reviewed. First, the working mechanisms of solid‐solid TENG and solid–liquid TENG are introduced. Subsequently, the development of TENG‐based sensing systems and their application progress in self‐powered temperature sensors, self‐powered pressure sensors, self‐powered humidity sensors, self‐powered atmosphere sensors, self‐powered wireless sensors, interface wetting status monitoring, solution property monitoring, and friction condition monitoring are highlighted. Finally, current challenges and open opportunities are discussed.

Abstract:The integration of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and 2D nanomaterials brings about 2D-nanomaterial-based TENGs (2D-TENGs) that promote the rapid development of self-powered sensing systems and wearable electronics. Extraordinary physical, electronic, chemical, and optical properties of 2D nanomaterials endow 2D-TENGs with improved output performance. This review presents the state of the art of 2D-TENGs with respect to basic classifications, enhancement mechanisms, special advantages, output performances, and applications in energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. Furthermore, several challenges that can impede applications of 2D-TENGs are discussed.

Abstract:<p>The development of sensing technologies has increased the intelligence level of equipment. It is difficult for traditional sensing technologies to meet many current application requirements, such as complex trajectory monitoring, flexible manufacturing or other fields. Triboelectric nanogenerators were first invented in 2012 and have revolutionized energy generation and sensing. Triboelectric sensors have a variety of structures, which have promoted their applications in the field of internet of things, biomedicine, intelligent transportation and motion sensing or something. The development of triboelectric nanogenerators in machinery industry has attracted wide attention. This review covers recent progress in the development of triboelectric mechanical sensors for monitoring mechanical motion, mechanical vibration, mechanical pressure and mechanical tactile perception. The prospects of triboelectric mechanical sensors are then summarized.</p>

Abstract:As a new type of energy harvesting technology, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can convert distributed energy into electrical energy. It is widely used in various fields such as wearable devices, biomedical devices, Internet of Things (IoT), natural environment, etc. However, there are still some issues that need to be solved for the commercial implementation of TENGs. This review focuses on four major kinds of applications for TENG as the platform of harvesting micro-nano energy: in vivo, in vitro, living environment and wild environment. The challenges and feasible techniques facing TENGs are summarized in three aspects, including low energy output, immature manufacturing technology and unreliable service life. We also review the recent progress in the strategies for improving the output performance and robustness of TENGs, including but not limited to material optimization, device engineering and power management. The aim is to establish a feasible framework of TENGs from laboratory to engineering application. Finally, the future trend of TENGs' application in distributed sensors and biomedical devices has prospected as a promising micro-nano energy for guiding the next innovation researches.

Abstract:The major aim of this study is to provide a broad review of the fundamental ideas, progress, and utilization of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). The modes and operations of numerous triboelectric nanogenerator configurations along with applications and materials are also discussed. Triboelectric nanogenerators, a ground-breaking power production technology, were unveiled in 2012 and classified as one of the most effective generators to convert unused mechanical energy into electrical energy to run a wide range of devices. Triboelectric nanogenerators have made significant progress since the creation of this novel power-generation technology. The operating principles of various modes, such as freestanding triboelectric-layer, single-electrode, lateral sliding, and vertical contact-separation have also been carefully investigated in order to give readers a deeper understanding of the technology. The key applications of TENGs, such as high voltage power supply, blue energy, self-power sensors, and micro/nano-energy, are also described in this work along with concepts for further research. As a result, triboelectric nanogenerators are very important and attractive technology with advantages of low cost, straightforward construction, simple fabrication, high efficiency, and relatively high output performance. Wide range of material choice allows researchers to use the technology in many configurations with multiple applications. Numerous scientific modeling and analysis are also reviewed for a more solid understanding of this revolutionary and unique technology.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) with triboelectrification and electrostatic induction effects have attracted wide attention in recent decades, for its diversified application scenarios such as power generation, sensing, and so on. Undoubtedly, although still lacks standardized large-scale production, TENG has demonstrated good performance and increasingly promising prospects in fields such as energy harvest, healthcare, and medical monitoring. Here, this minireview provides a brief summary on the latest application progress of TENG, which may offer insights for expanding application fields and developing design concepts for TENG based devices.

Abstract:As the world is marching into the era of the internet of things (IoTs) and artificial intelligence, the most vital development for hardware is a multifunctional array of sensing systems, which forms the foundation of the fourth industrial revolution toward an intelligent world. Given the need for mobility of these multitudes of sensors, the success of the IoTs calls for distributed energy sources, which can be provided by solar, thermal, wind, and mechanical triggering/vibrations. The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for mechanical energy harvesting developed by Z.L. Wang's group is one of the best choices for this energy for the new era, since triboelectrification is a universal and ubiquitous effect with an abundant choice of materials. The development of self‐powered active sensors enabled by TENGs is revolutionary compared to externally powered passive sensors, similar to the advance from wired to wireless communication. In this paper, the fundamental theory, experiments, and applications of TENGs are reviewed as a foundation of the energy for the new era with four major application fields: micro/nano power sources, self‐powered sensors, large‐scale blue energy, and direct high‐voltage power sources. A roadmap is proposed for the research and commercialization of TENG in the next 10 years. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), which utilize the universal triboelectrification for harvesting ambient and biological mechanical energy, has attracted worldwide interest and undergone exponential growth since its invention in 2012. This article reviews the fundamentals and applications of TENG as a foundation of the energy for the new era, and proposes a road map for its research and commercialization in the next decade.

Abstract:In recent years, to enable self‐power and wireless sensing, triboelectric sensors based on TENGs have developed rapidly, and researchers have design and fabricated variable triboelectric sensors for different application scenarios. This review summarizes the recent progress in triboelectric sensors including multiple applications, advanced triboelectric materials, and manufacturing integration and data processing. With the rapid development of industry and information technology, rough challenges have been put forward for the traditional sensor technology to meet the increasingly complex and diverse application demands in actual production and daily life, and the widely distributed sensor network also faces complex power supply and maintenance problems. As a new energy conversion technology, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) based on triboelectrification and electrostatic induction effect can respond to the weak mechanical stimuli in the surrounding environment and generate corresponding electrical signals to realize the sensing function without external power supply. In addition, TENGs have the advantages of wide selection of fabrication materials, flexible and diverse fundamental modes, which can be customized for different applications and realize different sensing functions. In recent years, triboelectric sensors based on TENGs have developed rapidly, and researchers have developed variable triboelectric sensors for different application scenarios. In this paper, the developed triboelectric sensos have been classified into different categories, the advanced strategy to prepare advanced triboelectric materials and technology used for manufacturing integration have been introduced. This work summarizes the main applications of triboelectric sensors and put forward the current challenges, so as to provide guidance and instructions for the future development of triboelectric sensors.

Abstract:The development of the Internet of Things (loT) and artificial intelligence has accompanied the evolution of energy demand and structure in the new era, and the power sources for billions of distributed electronics and sensors have aroused worldwide interest. As an alternative energy harvesting technology, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have received remarkable attention and have shown attractive potential applications for use in micro/nano power sources, self-powered sensors, high-voltage power sources, and blue energy due to their advantages of small size, light weight, flexibility, low cost, and high efficiency at low frequency. In this review, we discuss high-performance TENGs from the perspectives of triboelectric charge density, output voltage, energy density, and corresponding quantification methods. Among these topics, the limitations, optimization methods and techniques, and potential directions to challenge these limits are comprehensively discussed and reviewed. Finally, we discuss the emerging challenges, strategies, and opportunities for research and development of highperformance TENGs.

Abstract:With the rapid progress of artificial intelligence, humans are moving toward the era of the intelligent connection of all things. Therefore, the demand for sensors is drastically increasing with developing intelligent social applications. Traditional sensors must be triggered by an external power source and the energy consumption is high for equipment that is widely distributed and working intermittently, which is not conducive to developing sustainable green and healthy applications. However, self-powered sensors based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) can autonomously harvest energy from the surrounding environment and convert this energy into electrical energy for storage. Sensors can also be self-powered without an external power supply, which is vital for smart cities, smart homes, smart transportation, environmental monitoring, wearable devices, and bio-medicine. This review mainly summarizes the working mechanism of TENG and the research progress of self-powered sensors based on TENG about the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, human–computer interaction, and intelligent medical fields in recent years.

Abstract:The development of industry and of the Internet of Things (IoTs) have brought energy issues and huge challenges to the environment. The emergence of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) has attracted wide attention due to their advantages, such as self-powering, lightweight, and facile fabrication. Similarly to paper and other fiber-based materials, which are biocompatible, biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and are everywhere in daily life, paper-based TENGs (P-TENGs) have shown great potential for various energy harvesting and interactive applications. Here, a detailed summary of P-TENGs with two-dimensional patterns and three-dimensional structures is reported. P-TENGs have the potential to be used in many practical applications, including self-powered sensing devices, human–machine interaction, electrochemistry, and highly efficient energy harvesting devices. This leads to a simple yet effective way for the next generation of energy devices and paper electronics.
