Abstract:Interest is growing in artificial empathy, but so is confusion about what artificial empathy is or needs to be. This confusion makes it challenging to navigate the technical and ethical issues that accompany empathic AI development. Here, we outline a framework for thinking about empathic AI based on the premise that different constellations of capabilities associated with empathy are important for different empathic AI applications. We describe distinctions of capabilities that we argue belong under the empathy umbrella, and show how three medical empathic AI use cases require different sets of these capabilities. We conclude by discussing why appreciation of the diverse capabilities under the empathy umbrella is important for both AI creators and users.

The Illusion of Empathy: How AI Chatbots Shape Conversation Perception

Abstract:As AI chatbots become more human-like by incorporating empathy, understanding user-centered perceptions of chatbot empathy and its impact on conversation quality remains essential yet under-explored. This study examines how chatbot identity and perceived empathy influence users' overall conversation experience. Analyzing 155 conversations from two datasets, we found that while GPT-based chatbots were rated significantly higher in conversational quality, they were consistently perceived as less empathetic than human conversational partners. Empathy ratings from GPT-4o annotations aligned with users' ratings, reinforcing the perception of lower empathy in chatbots. In contrast, 3 out of 5 empathy models trained on human-human conversations detected no significant differences in empathy language between chatbots and humans. Our findings underscore the critical role of perceived empathy in shaping conversation quality, revealing that achieving high-quality human-AI interactions requires more than simply embedding empathetic language; it necessitates addressing the nuanced ways users interpret and experience empathy in conversations with chatbots.

Abstract:Advances in the performance of large language models (LLMs) have led some researchers to propose the emergence of theory of mind (ToM) in artificial intelligence (AI). LLMs can attribute beliefs, desires, intentions, and emotions, and they will improve in their accuracy. Rather than employing the characteristically human method of empathy, they learn to attribute mental states by recognizing linguistic patterns in a dataset that typically do not include that individual. We ask whether LLMs' inability to empathize precludes them from honoring an individual's right to be an exception, that is, from making assessments of character and predictions of behavior that reflect appropriate sensitivity to a person's individuality. Can LLMs seriously consider an individual's claim that their case is different based on internal mental states like beliefs, desires, and intentions, or are they limited to judging that case based on its similarities to others? We propose that the method of empathy has special significance for honoring the right to be an exception that is distinct from the value of predictive accuracy, at which LLMs excel. We conclude by considering whether using empathy to consider exceptional cases has intrinsic or merely practical value and we introduce conceptual and empirical avenues for advancing this investigation.

Identification and Description of Emotions by Current Large Language Models

Abstract:The assertion that artificial intelligence (AI) cannot grasp the subtleties and complexities of human emotions has been a long-standing debate in AI research. However, recent advancements, particularly in large language models (LLMs), have begun challenging this notion by demonstrating an increased capacity for understanding and generating human-like text, a significant step toward artificial empathy and emotional intelligence. In this study, we evaluated the empathy levels and the identification and description of emotions by three current language models Bard, GPT 3.5, and GPT 4. We used the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the 60-question Empathy Quotient (EQ-60) questions to prompt these models and score the responses. The models' performance was contrasted with human benchmarks of neurotypical controls and clinical populations. We found that the less sophisticated models (Bard and GPT 3.5) performed inferiorly on TAS-20, aligning close to alexithymia, a condition with significant difficulties in recognizing, expressing, and describing one's or others' experienced emotions. However, the newest GPT 4 uniquely achieved performance close to the human level, with two sub-categories surpassing humans. Interestingly, there was an intriguing inverse relationship between the model's success on aptitude tests and performance on the EQ-60, with Bard surpassing the human benchmark significantly but not GPT 3.5 and GPT 4. These results demonstrated that LLMs trained on vast amounts of text data, when benchmarked on their capacity for human-level empathy and emotional intelligence, are comparable in their ability to identify and describe emotions and may be able to surpass humans in their capacity for emotional intelligence. These novel insights into the emotional intelligence capabilities of foundational models provide alignment research and a measurement of the progress and limitations towards aligning with human values. While the journey towards fully empathetic AI is still ongoing, these advancements suggest that it may not be as far-fetched as once believed.

Abstract:Purpose: Empathy, a cornerstone of human interaction, is a unique quality to humans that Large Language Models (LLMs) are believed to lack. Our study aims to review the literature on the capacity of LLMs in demonstrating empathy Methods: We conducted a literature search on MEDLINE up to July 2023. Seven publications ultimately met the inclusion criteria. Results: All studies included in this review were published in 2023. All studies but one focused on ChatGPT-3.5 by OpenAI. Only one study evaluated empathy based on objective metrics, and all others used subjective human assessment. The studies reported LLMs to exhibits elements of empathy, including emotions recognition and providing emotionally supportive responses in diverse contexts, most of which were related to healthcare. In some cases, LLMs were observed to outperform humans in empathy-related tasks. Conclusion: LLMs demonstrated some aspects of empathy in variable scenarios, mainly related to healthcare. The empathy may be considered cognitive empathy. Social skills are a fundamental aspect of intelligence, thus further research is imperative to enhance these skills in AI.

Abstract:In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) seamlessly integrates into the fabric of daily life, understanding and enhancing human emotional intelligence (EI) through empathetic algorithms emerges as a frontier in technological advancement. This research paper explores the development and application of AI systems capable of recognizing, interpreting, and responding to human emotions in a manner that fosters emotional growth and understanding. Through a comprehensive literature review, this study identifies the theoretical underpinnings of emotional intelligence and examines the current landscape of empathetic algorithms. Employing a mixed-methods approach, including case studies and empirical analysis, the paper presents novel insights into how AI can be engineered to support emotional intelligence across various domains, such as healthcare, education, and customer service. Ethical considerations, including privacy, consent, and data security, are thoroughly evaluated to address potential societal implications. The findings suggest that empathetic algorithms hold significant promise in enhancing human emotional intelligence, albeit with challenges that necessitate careful ethical and technical scrutiny. The research culminates in proposing a set of guidelines for future developments in this field, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration. Are Large Language Models More Empathetic than Humans?

Abstract:With the emergence of large language models (LLMs), investigating if they can surpass humans in areas such as emotion recognition and empathetic responding has become a focal point of research. This paper presents a comprehensive study exploring the empathetic responding capabilities of four state-of-the-art LLMs: GPT-4, LLaMA-2-70B-Chat, Gemini-1.0-Pro, and Mixtral-8x7B-Instruct in comparison to a human baseline. We engaged 1,000 participants in a between-subjects user study, assessing the empathetic quality of responses generated by humans and the four LLMs to 2,000 emotional dialogue prompts meticulously selected to cover a broad spectrum of 32 distinct positive and negative emotions. Our findings reveal a statistically significant superiority of the empathetic responding capability of LLMs over humans. GPT-4 emerged as the most empathetic, marking approximately 31% increase in responses rated as "Good" compared to the human benchmark. It was followed by LLaMA-2, Mixtral-8x7B, and Gemini-Pro, which showed increases of approximately 24%, 21%, and 10% in "Good" ratings, respectively. We further analyzed the response ratings at a finer granularity and discovered that some LLMs are significantly better at responding to specific emotions compared to others. The suggested evaluation framework offers a scalable and adaptable approach for assessing the empathy of new LLMs, avoiding the need to replicate this study's findings in future research.

Abstract:Social interactions promote well-being, yet challenges like geographic distance and mental health conditions can limit in-person engagement. Advances in AI agents are transferring communication, particularly in mental health, where AI chatbots provide accessible, non-judgmental support. However, a key challenge is how effectively these systems can express empathy, which is crucial in human-centered design. Current research highlights a gap in understanding how AI can authentically convey empathy, particularly as issues like anxiety, depression, and loneliness increase. Our research focuses on this gap by comparing empathy expression in human-human versus human-AI interactions. Using personal narratives and statistical analysis, we examine empathy levels elicited by humans and AI, including GPT-4o and fine-tuned versions of the model. This work aims to enhance the authenticity of AI-driven empathy, contributing to the future design of more reliable and effective mental health support systems that foster meaningful social interactions.

Abstract:As AI closely interacts with human society, it is crucial to ensure that its decision-making is safe, altruistic, and aligned with human ethical and moral values. However, existing research on embedding ethical and moral considerations into AI remains insufficient, and previous external constraints based on principles and rules are inadequate to provide AI with long-term stability and generalization capabilities. In contrast, the intrinsic altruistic motivation based on empathy is more willing, spontaneous, and robust. Therefore, this paper is dedicated to autonomously driving intelligent agents to acquire morally behaviors through human-like affective empathy mechanisms. We draw inspiration from the neural mechanism of human brain's moral intuitive decision-making, and simulate the mirror neuron system to construct a brain-inspired affective empathy-driven altruistic decision-making model. Here, empathy directly impacts dopamine release to form intrinsic altruistic motivation. Based on the principle of moral utilitarianism, we design the moral reward function that integrates intrinsic empathy and extrinsic self-task goals. A comprehensive experimental scenario incorporating empathetic processes, personal objectives, and altruistic goals is developed. The proposed model enables the agent to make consistent moral decisions (prioritizing altruism) by balancing self-interest with the well-being of others. We further introduce inhibitory neurons to regulate different levels of empathy and verify the positive correlation between empathy levels and altruistic preferences, yielding conclusions consistent with findings from psychological behavioral experiments. This work provides a feasible solution for the development of ethical AI by leveraging the intrinsic human-like empathy mechanisms, and contributes to the harmonious coexistence between humans and AI.

Abstract:In the early stages of the design process, designers explore opportunities by discovering unmet needs and developing innovative concepts as potential solutions. From a human-centered design perspective, designers must develop empathy with people to truly understand their needs. However, developing empathy is a complex and subjective process that relies heavily on the designer's empathic capability. Therefore, the development of empathic understanding is intuitive, and the discovery of underlying needs is often serendipitous. This paper aims to provide insights from artificial intelligence research to indicate the future direction of AI-driven human-centered design, taking into account the essential role of empathy. Specifically, we conduct an interdisciplinary investigation of research areas such as data-driven user studies, empathic understanding development, and artificial empathy. Based on this foundation, we discuss the role that artificial empathy can play in human-centered design and propose an artificial empathy framework for human-centered design. Building on the mechanisms behind empathy and insights from empathic design research, the framework aims to break down the rather complex and subjective concept of empathy into components and modules that can potentially be modeled computationally. Furthermore, we discuss the expected benefits of developing such systems and identify current research gaps to encourage future research efforts.

Abstract:Critical to successful human interaction is a capacity for empathy - the ability to understand and share the thoughts and feelings of another. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are increasingly required to interact with humans in a myriad of settings, it is important to enable AI to wield empathy as a tool to benefit those it interacts with. In this paper, we work towards this goal by bringing together a number of important concepts: empathy, AI planning, and reasoning in the presence of knowledge and belief. We formalize the notion of Empathetic Planning which is informed by the beliefs and affective state of the empathizee. We appeal to an epistemic logic framework to represent the beliefs of the empathizee and propose AI planning-based computational approaches to compute empathetic solutions. We illustrate the potential benefits of our approach by conducting a study where we evaluate participants' perceptions of the agent's empathetic abilities and assistive capabilities.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform firm-customer interactions. However, current AI marketing agents are often perceived as cold and uncaring and can be poor substitutes for human-based interactions. Addressing this issue, this article argues that artificial empathy needs to become an important design consideration in the next generation of AI marketing applications. Drawing from research in diverse disciplines, we develop a systematic framework for integrating artificial empathy into AI-enabled marketing interactions. We elaborate on the key components of artificial empathy and how each component can be implemented in AI marketing agents. We further explicate and test how artificial empathy generates value for both customers and firms by bridging the AI-human gap in affective and social customer experience. Recognizing that artificial empathy may not always be desirable or relevant, we identify the requirements for artificial empathy to create value and deduce situations where it is unnecessary and, in some cases, harmful.

Abstract:Background: Empathy is a driving force in our connection to others, our mental well-being, and resilience to challenges. With the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, mental health chatbots, and AI social support companions, it is important to understand how empathy unfolds toward stories from human versus AI narrators and how transparency plays a role in user emotions. Objective: We aim to understand how empathy shifts across human-written versus AI-written stories, and how these findings inform ethical implications and human-centered design of using mental health chatbots as objects of empathy. Methods: We conducted crowd-sourced studies with 985 participants who each wrote a personal story and then rated empathy toward 2 retrieved stories, where one was written by a language model, and another was written by a human. Our studies varied disclosing whether a story was written by a human or an AI system to see how transparent author information affects empathy toward the narrator. We conducted mixed methods analyses: through statistical tests, we compared user's self-reported state empathy toward the stories across different conditions. In addition, we qualitatively coded open-ended feedback about reactions to the stories to understand how and why transparency affects empathy toward human versus AI storytellers. Results: We found that participants significantly empathized with human-written over AI-written stories in almost all conditions, regardless of whether they are aware (t 196 =7.07, P <.001, Cohen d =0.60) or not aware (t 298 =3.46, P <.001, Cohen d =0.24) that an AI system wrote the story. We also found that participants reported greater willingness to empathize with AI-written stories when there was transparency about the story author (t 494 =–5.49, P <.001, Cohen d =0.36). Conclusions: Our work sheds light on how empathy toward AI or human narrators is tied to the way the text is presented, thus informing ethical considerations of empathetic artificial social support or mental health chatbots. Abstract:Differentiating between generated and human-written content is important for navigating the modern world. Large language models (LLMs) are crucial drivers behind the increased quality of computer-generated content. Reportedly, humans find it increasingly difficult to identify whether an AI model generated a piece of text. Our work tests how two important factors contribute to the human vs AI race: empathy and an incentive to appear human. We address both aspects in two experiments: human participants and a state-of-the-art LLM wrote relationship advice (Study 1, n=530) or mere descriptions (Study 2, n=610), either instructed to be as human as possible or not. New samples of humans (n=428 and n=408) then judged the texts' source. Our findings show that when empathy is required, humans excel. Contrary to expectations, instructions to appear human were only effective for the LLM, so the human advantage diminished. Computational text analysis revealed that LLMs become more human because they may have an implicit representation of what makes a text human and effortlessly apply these heuristics. The model resorts to a conversational, self-referential, informal tone with a simpler vocabulary to mimic stochastic empathy. We discuss these findings in light of recent claims on the on-par performance of LLMs.

Abstract:This paper explores enhancing empathy in Large Language Models (LLMs) by integrating them with physiological data. We propose a physiological computing approach that includes developing deep learning models that use physiological data for recognizing psychological states and integrating the predicted states with LLMs for empathic interaction. We showcase the application of this approach in an Empathic LLM (EmLLM) chatbot for stress monitoring and control. We also discuss the results of a pilot study that evaluates this EmLLM chatbot based on its ability to accurately predict user stress, provide human-like responses, and assess the therapeutic alliance with the user.

Abstract:The development of Large Language Models (LLMs) provides human-centered Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) with a glimmer of hope. Empathy serves as a key emotional attribute of humanity, playing an irreplaceable role in human-centered AGI. Despite numerous researches aim to improve the cognitive empathy of models by incorporating external knowledge, there has been limited attention on the sensibility and rationality of the conversation itself, which are vital components of the empathy. However, the rationality information within the conversation is restricted, and previous methods of extending knowledge are subject to semantic conflict and single-role view. In this paper, we design an innovative encoder module inspired by self-presentation theory in sociology, which specifically processes sensibility and rationality sentences in dialogues. And we employ a LLM as a rational brain to decipher profound logical information preserved within the conversation, which assists our model in assessing the balance between sensibility and rationality to produce high-quality empathetic response. Experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms other methods in both automatic and human evaluations.

Abstract:Emotions are an integral part of human cognition and they guide not only our understanding of the world but also our actions within it. As such, whether we soothe or flame an emotion is not inconsequential. Recent work in conversational AI has focused on responding empathetically to users, validating and soothing their emotions without a real basis. This AI-aided emotional regulation can have negative consequences for users and society, tending towards a one-noted happiness defined as only the absence of "negative" emotions. We argue that we must carefully consider whether and how to respond to users' emotions.

Abstract:We review the state of research on empathy in natural language processing and identify the following issues: (1) empathy definitions are absent or abstract, which (2) leads to low construct validity and reproducibility. Moreover, (3) emotional empathy is overemphasized, skewing our focus to a narrow subset of simplified tasks. We believe these issues hinder research progress and argue that current directions will benefit from a clear conceptualization that includes operationalizing cognitive empathy components. Our main objectives are to provide insight and guidance on empathy conceptualization for NLP research objectives and to encourage researchers to pursue the overlooked opportunities in this area, highly relevant, e.g., for clinical and educational sectors.

Abstract:Collaboration between humans and intelligent agents has become an integral component of everyday life due to advancements in intelligent technologies. Emotional communication plays a particularly important role in this human-computer relationship. In addition to enhancing experiences, emotional communication facilitates decision-making, improves efficiency, and serves various other beneficial purposes. Current research is focused on human-computer empathy, which enables intelligent agents to seamlessly integrate into human societies by simulating empathic emotions. This research draws upon knowledge from psychology, computer science, design, sociology, and other relevant disciplines. This paper provides an overview of human-computer empathy, covering definitions, principles, technical implementations, and design aspects to illuminate the complex landscape of knowledge in this area. Two specific areas are given detailed attention: technical implementation and empathy design. In the technical implementation section, the paper delves into the psychological theoretical foundations for developing artificial empathy models, techniques of affective computing, and related artificial empathy models. In the design section, it discusses methods for implementing empathic responses, analyzing designs using social psychology, and outlines various design principles and evaluation methods. Finally, the paper addresses ethical considerations, design challenges, and other pertinent topics.
EmpathyEar: An Open-source Avatar Multimodal Empathetic Chatbot

Abstract:This paper introduces EmpathyEar, a pioneering open-source, avatar-based multimodal empathetic chatbot, to fill the gap in traditional text-only empathetic response generation (ERG) systems. Leveraging the advancements of a large language model, combined with multimodal encoders and generators, EmpathyEar supports user inputs in any combination of text, sound, and vision, and produces multimodal empathetic responses, offering users, not just textual responses but also digital avatars with talking faces and synchronized speeches. A series of emotion-aware instruction-tuning is performed for comprehensive emotional understanding and generation capabilities. In this way, EmpathyEar provides users with responses that achieve a deeper emotional resonance, closely emulating human-like empathy. The system paves the way for the next emotional intelligence, for which we open-source the code for public access.
