Abstract:This mostly expository paper records some basic facts about towers of homotopy fiber sequences. We give a proof that a pairing of towers induces a pairing of associated spectral sequences, for towers of spaces and towers of spectra.

Abstract:We reconcile the multiplications on the homotopy rings of motivic ring spectra used by Voevodsky and Dugger. While the connection is elementary and similar phenomena have been observed in situations like supersymmetry, neither we nor other researchers we consulted were aware of the conflicting definitions and the potential consequences. Hence this short note.

Abstract:The intent of this paper is to explore Dowker duality from a combinatorial, topological, and categorical perspective. The paper presents three short, new proofs of Dowker duality using various poset fiber lemmas. We introduce modifications of joins and products of simplicial complexes called relational join and relational product complexes. These relational complexes can be constructed whenever there is a relation between simplicial complexes, which includes the context of Dowker duality and covers of simplicial complexes. In this more general setting, we show that the homologies of the simplicial complexes and the relational complexes fit together in a long exact sequence. Similar results are then established for profunctors, which are generalizations of relations to categories. The cograph and graph of profunctors play the role of the relational join and relational product complexes. For a profunctor that arise from adjoint functors between $C$ and $D$, we show that $C$, $D$, the cograph, and the graph all have homotopy equivalent classifying spaces. Lastly, we show that given any profunctor from $D$ to $C$, the homologies of $C$, $D$, the cograph, and the graph form a long exact sequence. We make use of a spectral sequence for Grothendieck fibrations of small categories.

Abstract:We give in this note an overview of a recent work leading to a generalization of the Hodge-Tate spectral sequence to morphisms. The latter takes place in Faltings topos, but its construction requires the introduction of a relative variant of this topos which is the main novelty of our work.

Abstract:We construct a multiplicative spectral sequence converging to the cohomology algebra of the diagonal complex of a bisimplicial set with coefficients in a field. The construction provides a spectral sequence converging to the cohomology algebra of the classifying space of a topological category. By applying the machinery to a Borel construction, we determine explicitly the mod $p$ cohomology algebra of the free loop space of the real projective space for each odd prime $p$. This is highlighted as an important computational example of such a spectral sequence. Moreover, we try to represent generators in the singular de Rham cohomology algebra of the diffeological free loop space of a non-simply connected manifold $M$ with differential forms on the universal cover of $M$ via Chen's iterated integral map.

Homology of torus spaces with acyclic proper faces of the orbit space

Abstract:Let $X$ be 2n-dimensional compact manifold with a locally standard action of a compact torus. The orbit space $X/T$ is a manifold with corners. Suppose that all proper faces of $X/T$ are acyclic. In the paper we study the homological spectral sequence $E^*_{*,*}\Rightarrow H_*(X)$ corresponding to the filtration of $X$ by orbit types. When the free part of the action is not twisted, we describe the whole spectral sequence in terms of homology and combinatorial structure of $X/T$. In this case we describe the kernel and the cokernel of the natural map $k[X/T]/(l.s.o.p.) \to H_*(X)$, where $k[X/T]$ is a face ring of $X/T$ and $(l.s.o.p.)$ is the ideal generated by a linear system of parameters (this ideal appears as the image of $H^{>0}(BT)$ in equivariant cohomology. There exists a natural double grading on $H_*(X)$, which satisfies bigraded Poincare duality. This general theory is applied to compute homology groups of origami toric manifolds with acyclic proper faces of the orbit space. A number of natural generalizations is considered. These include Buchsbaum simplicial complexes and posets. h'- and h''-numbers of simplicial posets appear as the ranks of certain terms in the spectral sequence $E^*_{*,*}$. In particular, using topological argument we show that Buchsbaum posets have nonnegative h''-vectors. The proofs of this paper rely on the theory of cellular sheaves. We associate to a torus space certain sheaves and cosheaves on the underlying simplicial poset, and observe an interesting duality between these objects. This duality seems to be a version of Poincare-Verdier duality between cellular sheaves and cosheaves.

The Goodwillie tower and the EHP sequence

Abstract:We study the interaction between the EHP sequence and the Goodwillie tower of the identity evaluated at spheres at the prime 2. Both give rise to spectral sequences (the EHP spectral sequence and the Goodwillie spectral sequence, respectively) which compute the unstable homotopy groups of spheres. We relate the Goodwillie filtration to the P map, and the Goodwillie differentials to the H map. Furthermore, we study an iterated Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence approach to the homotopy of the layers of the Goodwillie tower of the identity on spheres. We show that differentials in these spectral sequences give rise to differentials in the EHP spectral sequence. We use our theory to re-compute the 2-primary unstable stems through the Toda range (up to the 19-stem). We also study the homological behavior of the interaction between the EHP sequence and the Goodwillie tower of the identity. This homological analysis involves the introduction of Dyer-Lashof-like operations associated to M. Ching's operad structure on the derivatives of the identity. These operations act on the mod 2 stable homology of the Goodwillie layers of any functor from spaces to spaces.

Abstract:In homotopy theory, exact sequences and spectral sequences consist of groups and pointed sets, linked by actions. We prove that the theory of such exact and spectral sequences can be established in a categorical setting which is based on the existence of kernels and cokernels with respect to an assigned ideal of null morphisms, a generalisation of abelian categories and Puppe-exact categories.

Abstract:For a motivic spectrum $E\in \mathcal{SH}(k)$, let $\Gamma(E)$ denote the global sections spectrum, where $E$ is viewed as a sheaf of spectra on $\mathrm{Sm}_k$. Voevodsky's slice filtration determines a spectral sequence converging to the homotopy groups of $\Gamma(E)$. In this paper, we introduce a spectral sequence converging instead to the mod 2 homology of $\Gamma(E)$ and study the case $E=BPGL\langle m\rangle$ for $k=\mathbb R$ in detail. We show that this spectral sequence contains the $\mathcal{A}_*$-comodule algebra $(\mathcal{A}//\mathcal{A}(m))^*$ as permanent cycles, and we determine a family of differentials interpolating between $(\mathcal{A}//\mathcal{A}(0))^*$ and $(\mathcal{A}//\mathcal{A}(m))^*$. Using this, we compute the spectral sequence completely for $m\le 3$. In the height 2 case, the Betti realization of $BPGL\langle 2\rangle$ is the $C_2$-spectrum $BP_{\mathbb R}\langle 2\rangle$, a form of which was shown by Hill and Meier to be an equivariant model for $\mathrm{tmf}_1(3)$. Our spectral sequence therefore gives a computation of the comodule algebra $H_*\mathrm{tmf}_0(3)$. As a consequence, we deduce a new ($2$-local) Wood-type splitting \[\mathrm{tmf}\wedge X\simeq \mathrm{tmf}_0(3)\] of $\mathrm{tmf}$-modules predicted by Davis and Mahowald, for $X$ a certain 10-cell complex.

Abstract:We construct a tower of fibrations approximating the derived mapping space between two simplicially enriched operads subject to mild conditions. The n-th stage of the tower is obtained by neglecting operations with more than n inputs. The main theorem describes the layers of this tower.

Abstract:The space of E-infinity structures on an simplicial operad C is the limit of a tower of fibrations, so its homotopy is the abutment of a Bousfield-Kan fringed spectral sequence. The spectral sequence begins (under mild restrictions) with the stable cohomotopy of the graded right Gamma-module formed by the homotopy groups of C ; the fringe contains an obstruction theory for the existence of E-infinity structures on C. This formulation is very flexible: applications extend beyond structures on classical ring spectra to examples (in references) in motivic homotopy theory.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a theory of stable homotopy 2‐groups for spectra which is compatible with the smash product on the structured models for the stable homotopy category, therefore the homotopy 2‐groups of a ring spectrum form a 2‐ring, etc. For instance, the primary algebraic model of a ring spectrum R is the ring π*R of homotopy groups. We introduce the secondary model π*, *R which has the structure of a secondary analogue of a ring. The homology of π*, *R is π*R and triple Massey products in π*, *R coincide with triple Toda brackets in π*R. We also describe the secondary model π*, *Q of a commutative ring spectrum Q from which we derive the cup‐one square operation in the graded commutative ring π*Q. As an application we obtain for each ring spectrum R new derivations of the ring π*R.

Abstract:We study homotopy theory of the category of spectral sequences with respect to the class of weak equivalences given by maps which are quasi-isomorphisms on a fixed page. We introduce the category of extended spectral sequences and show that this is bicomplete by analysis of a certain linear presheaf category modelled on discs. We endow the category of extended spectral sequences with various model category structures, restricting to give the almost Brown category structures on spectral sequences of our earlier work. One of these has the property that spectral sequences is a homotopically full subcategory. By results of Meier, this exhibits the category of spectral sequences as a fibrant object in the Barwick-Kan model structure on relative categories, that is, it gives a model for an infinity category of spectral sequences. We also use the presheaf approach to define two décalage functors on spectral sequences, left and right adjoint to a shift functor, thereby clarifying prior use of the term décalage in connection with spectral sequences.

Abstract:For each prime $p$, we define a $t$-structure on the category $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}_{harm}^b$ of harmonic $\mathbb{C}$-motivic left module spectra over $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau$, whose MGL-homology has bounded Chow-Novikov degree, such that its heart is equivalent to the abelian category of $p$-completed $BP_*BP$-comodules that are concentrated in even degrees. We prove that $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}_{harm}^b$ is equivalent to $\mathcal{D}^b({{BP}_*{BP}\text{-}\mathbf{Comod}}^{ev})$ as stable $\infty$-categories equipped with $t$-structures. As an application, for each prime $p$, we prove that the motivic Adams spectral sequence for $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau$, which converges to the motivic homotopy groups of $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau$, is isomorphic to the algebraic Novikov spectral sequence, which converges to the classical Adams-Novikov $E_2$-page for the sphere spectrum $\widehat{S^0}$. This isomorphism of spectral sequences allows Isaksen and the second and third authors to compute the stable homotopy groups of spheres at least to the 90-stem, with ongoing computations into even higher dimensions.

Abstract:With the aim of understanding Morel's result on the $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy sheaves over a field, one extends the theory of unstable spectral sequences of Bousfield and Kan in the $\infty$-categorical setting. With this natural extension, parallel to the classical formalism of 'cohomology theory with supports', we introduce the notion of 'cohomotopy theory with supports'. We extend the Bloch-Ogus-Gabber theorem for Cohomology theory with supports to that of unstable setting, to obtain unstable Gersten (or Cousin) resolutions associated to the coniveau filtration, under suitable assumptions. We apply this theory to motivic homotopy, Nisnevich-local torsors, and Artin-Mazur étale homotopy type.

Uniqueness of real ring spectra up to higher homotopy

Abstract:We discuss a notion of uniqueness up to $n$-homotopy and study examples from stable homotopy theory. In particular, we show that the $q$-expansion map from elliptic cohomology to topological $K$-theory is unique up to $3$-homotopy, away from the prime $2$, and that upon taking $p$-completions and $\mathbf{F}_p^\times$-homotopy fixed points, this map is uniquely defined up to $(2p-3)$-homotopy. Using this, we prove new relationships between Adams operations on connective and dualisable topological modular forms -- other applications, including a construction of a connective model of Behrens' $Q(N)$ spectra away from $2N$, will be explored elsewhere. The technical tool facilitating this uniqueness is a variant of the Goerss--Hopkins obstruction theory for real spectra, which applies to various elliptic cohomology and topological $K$-theories with a trivial complex conjugation action as well as some of their homotopy fixed points.

Transfers of $A_\infty$- and other homotopy structures as Grothendieck bifibrations

Abstract:We show that the functor which assigns to an A-infinity morphism between isotopy classes of A-infinity algebras whose linear part is a chain homotopy equivalence its underlying chain map is a discrete Grothendieck bifibration. We then generalize our results to P-infinity structures over a field of characteristic zero, for any quadratic Koszul operad P. An immediate application is a categorical framework in which the transfers of e.g. A-infinity, L-infinity and C-infinity structures are strictly functorial. A by product of our reasoning is a general transfer theorem for P-infinity algebras, which we prove in the last section.

Abstract:We study the continuous (co-)homology of towers of spectra, with emphasis on a tower with homotopy inverse limit the Tate construction X^{tG} on a G-spectrum X. When G=C_p is cyclic of prime order and X=B^p is the p-th smash power of a bounded below spectrum B with H_*(B) of finite type, we prove that (B^p)^{tC_p} is a topological model for the Singer construction R_+(H^*(B)) on H^*(B). There is a map epsilon_B : B --> (B^p)^{tC_p} inducing the Ext_A-equivalence epsilon : R_+(H^*(B)) --> H^*(B). Hence epsilon_B and the canonical map Gamma : (B^p)^{C_p} --> (B^p)^{hC_p} are p-adic equivalences.

Cosmic Needles versus Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

Abstract:It has been suggested by a number of authors that the 2.7K cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation might have arisen from the radiation from Population III objects thermalized by conducting cosmic graphite/iron needle-shaped dust. Due to lack of an accurate solution to the absorption properties of exceedingly elongated grains, in existing literature which studies the CMB thermalizing process they are generally modelled as (1) needle-like spheroids in terms of the Rayleigh approximation; (2) infinite cylinders; and (3) the antenna theory. We show here that the Rayleigh approximation is not valid since the Rayleigh criterion is not satisfied for highly conducting needles. We also show that the available intergalactic iron dust, if modelled as infinite cylinders, is not sufficient to supply the required opacity at long wavelengths to obtain the observed isotropy and Planckian nature of the CMB. If appealing to the antenna theory, conducting iron needles with exceedingly large elongations (10^4) appear able to provide sufficient opacity to thermalize the CMB within the iron density limit. But the applicability of the antenna theory to exceedingly thin needles of nanometer/micrometer in thickness needs to be justified.

Quillen's Fundamental Spectral Sequences Revisited

Abstract:Quillen's fundamental spectral sequences relate André-Quillen homology and cohomology to Tor and Ext functors. The five-term exact sequences arising from these spectral sequences are leveraged to characterize regular and complete intersection local rings. Despite their immense importance in the theory of André-Quillen homology and cohomology, these spectral sequences are not treated in the literature as they merit. A sketchy argument with gaps for a special case of the first spectral sequence appears in an unpublished manuscript of Quillen, while the second spectral sequence is only stated without proof in another paper of Quillen. A rigorous proof of the spectral sequences requires a delicate investigation of the subtle structures involved. The goal of this expository article is to present a comprehensive and detailed proof of Quillen's fundamental spectral sequences in a readable and well-structured manner.
