Abstract:This study aimed to validate a simple field method for determining force- and power-velocity relationships and mechanical effectiveness of force application during sprint running. The proposed method, based on an inverse dynamic approach applied to the body center of mass, estimates the step-averaged ground reaction forces in runner's sagittal plane of motion during overground sprint acceleration from only anthropometric and spatiotemporal data. Force- and power-velocity relationships, the associated variables, and mechanical effectiveness were determined (a) on nine sprinters using both the proposed method and force plate measurements and (b) on six other sprinters using the proposed method during several consecutive trials to assess the inter-trial reliability. The low bias (<5%) and narrow limits of agreement between both methods for maximal horizontal force (638 ± 84 N), velocity (10.5 ± 0.74 m/s), and power output (1680 ± 280 W); for the slope of the force-velocity relationships; and for the mechanical effectiveness of force application showed high concurrent validity of the proposed method. The low standard errors of measurements between trials (<5%) highlighted the high reliability of the method. These findings support the validity of the proposed simple method, convenient for field use, to determine power, force, velocity properties, and mechanical effectiveness in sprint running.

Concurrent Validity and Reliability of the Sprint Force-Velocity Profile Assessed with K-AI Wearable Tech

Abstract:Establishing a sprint acceleration force-velocity profile is a way to assess an athlete's sprint-specific strength and speed production capacities. It can be determined in field condition using GNSS-based (global navigation satellite system) devices. The aims of this study were to (1) assess the inter-unit and the inter-trial reliability of the force-velocity profile variables obtained with K-AI Wearable Tech devices (50 Hz), (2) assess the concurrent validity of the input variables (maximal sprint speed and acceleration time constant), and (3) assess the validity of the output variables (maximal force output, running velocity and power). Twelve subjects, including one girl, performed forty-one 30 m sprints in total, during which the running speed was measured using two GPS (global positioning system) devices placed on the upper back and a radar (Stalker® Pro II Sports Radar Gun). Concurrent validity, inter-device and inter-trial reliability analyses were carried out for the input and output variables. Very strong to poor correlation (0.99 to 0.38) was observed for the different variables between the GPS and radar devices, with typical errors ranging from small to large (all < 7.6%). Inter-unit reliability was excellent to moderate depending on the variable (ICC values between 0.65 and 0.99). Finally, for the inter-trial reliability, the coefficients of variation were low to very low (all < 5.6%) for the radar and the GPS. The K-AI Wearable Tech used in this study is a concurrently valid and reliable alternative to radar for assessing a sprint acceleration force-velocity profile.
Are the ground reaction forces altered by the curve and with the increasing sprinting velocity?

Validating Two Systems For Estimating Force And Power

Abstract:This study examined the validity of 2 kinematic systems for estimating force and power during squat jumps. 12 weight-trained males each performed single repetition squat jumps with a 20-kg, 40-kg, 60-kg and 80-kg load on a Kistler portable force plate. A commercial linear position transducer (Gymaware [GYM]) and accelerometer (Myotest (R) [MYO]) were attached to the bar to assess concentric peak force (PF) and peak power (PP). Across all loads tested, the GYM and MYO estimates of PF and PP were moderately to strongly correlated (P <= 0.05-0.001) with the force plate measurements (r = 0.59-0.87 and r = 0.66-0.97), respectively. The mean PF and PP values were not significantly different between the 2 kinematic systems and the force plate, but the estimates did produce some systematic bias and relatively large random errors, especially with the 20-kg load (PF bias > 170 N, PF error > 335 N, PP bias > 400 W, PP error > 878 W). Some proportional bias was also identified. In summary, the estimation of PF and PP by a linear position transducer and accelerometer showed moderate to strong relative validity and equivalent absolute validity, but these estimates are limited by the presence of bias and large random errors.
Validity of Two Kinematic Systems for Calculating Force and Power During Squat Jumps

Abstract:Force and power are key exercise outputs in research and training practice. The direct acquisition of this kinetic data typically requires a force plate, which is not always practical and cost-effective, and generally limited to laboratory-based settings. Thus, kinematic systems (eg, linear position transducers, accelerometers) are becoming increasingly popular as tools for calculating force and power in situ during exercise. The aim was to assess the validity of a commercial linear position transducer and accelerometer for calculating force and power during squat jumps. Seven healthy males performed 2×single repetition squat jumps with four loads (20 kg, 40 kg, 60 kg and 80 kg). The squats were performed on top of a Kistler force plate. A commercial linear position transducer (Gymaware (GYM)) and accelerometer (Myotest (MYO)) were attached to the bar to assess concentric peak force (PF) and peak power (PP), based on the combined mass of the external load and each subject. Data were pooled across all loads for analysis. The PF and PP data from the GYM and MYO systems were strongly correlated with the force plate data (r=0.84-0.93, p<0.001) and also with each other (r=0.90-0.97, p<0.001). The mean PF and/or PP values calculated from the GYM and MYO systems were found to be 4.5%-6.5% higher than the measured values from the force plate (p<0.01). The PF and PP data from the linear position transducer and accelerometer showed strong relative validity compared to the force plate, but some differences in absolute validity were noted. The two kinematic systems provide other benefits (eg, portability, ease of use, cost effectiveness) for assessing PF and PP during squat jumps or similar isoinertial exercises.
Validity of muscle activation estimated with predicted ground reaction force in inverse dynamics based musculoskeletal simulation during gait

Abstract:The inverse dynamics based musculoskeletal simulation needs ground reaction forces (GRF) as an external force input. GRF can be predicted from kinematic data. However, the validity of estimated muscle activation using the predicted GRF has remained unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the validity of estimated muscle activation with predicted GRF in the inverse dynamics based musculoskeletal simulation. To perform musculoskeletal simulations, an open-source motion capture dataset that contains gait data from 50 healthy subjects was used. CusToM was used for the musculoskeletal simulations. Two sets of inverse dynamics and static optimization were performed, one used predicted GRF (PRED) and another used experimentally measured GRF (EXP). Pearson's correlation was calculated to evaluate the similarity between EMG and estimated muscle activations for both PRED and EXP. To compare PRED and EXP, paired t-tests were used to compare the trial-wise muscle activation similarity and residuals. Relationships between joint moments and residuals were also tested. The overall muscle activation similarity was comparable in PRED ( R = 0.477) and EXP ( R = 0.475). The residuals were 2–4 times higher in EXP compared to PRED ( P < 0.001). The hip flexion–extension moment was correlated to sagittal plane residual moment ( R = 0.467). The muscle activations estimated using predicted GRF were comparable to that with measured GRF in the inverse dynamics based musculoskeletal simulation. Prediction of GRF helps to perform musculoskeletal simulations where the force plates are not available.

Measuring Muscle Activity in Sprinters Using T2-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the level of muscle activity during sprint running using T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Methods: Fourteen male sprinters (age 21.2 [4.0] y; height 171.8 [4.2] cm, weight 65.5 [5.3] kg, 100-m personal record 11.01 [0.41] s; mean [SD]) performed 3 sets of three 60-m round-trip sprints. Before and after the round-trip sprints, 3 T magnetic resonance imaging scans were performed to obtain the T2 values of the 14 athletes' lower-extremity muscles. Results: After the 60-m round-trip sprints, the T2 value of the gluteus maximus, long head of biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, adductor brevis, adductor longus, adductor magnus, and gracilis increased significantly. The rate of change in the T2 values before and after the 60-m round-trip sprints was notably higher in the semitendinosus and gluteus maximus than in the other muscles. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the specific physiological metabolism of the lower-extremity muscles during fast sprinting. There are particularly high levels of muscle activity in the gluteus maximus and semitendinosus during sprint performance.

Many authors have produced work that is of high value to practitioners within sporting environments; however, the lack of field-based technology to assess features of running gait validly and reliably has prevented the application of these valuable works. This paper examines the validity and reliability of a practical field-based methodology for using commercial inertial measurement units (IMUs) to assess ground contact time (GCT). Validity was examined in the comparison of GCT measured from ground reaction force by a force plate and that determined by a lumbar mounted commercial IMU and analyzed using a commercially available system (SPEEDSIG). Reliability was assessed by a field-based examination of within and between-session variability in GCT measured using a commercially available system (SPEEDSIG). Significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. Results for validity (intraclass correlation [ICC] 0.83) and reliability (ICC 0.91) confirm that the described field-based methodology is qualified for use to determine GCT in a practical setting. The implications of this study are important as they offer sport practitioners (S&C coaches, rehab specialists, and physios) a scalable method to assess GCT in the field to develop greater understanding of their athletes and improve performance, injury prevention, and rehabilitation interventions. Furthermore, these results provide the foundation for further work that could provide greater detail describing individual running gait in the field.

Validity of an Inertial Measurement Unit System to Measure Lower Limb Kinematics at Point of Contact during Incremental High-Speed Running

Abstract:There is limited validation for portable methods in evaluating high-speed running biomechanics, with inertial measurement unit (IMU) systems commonly used as wearables for this purpose. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of an IMU system in high-speed running compared to a 3D motion analysis system (MAS). One runner performed incremental treadmill running, from 12 to 18 km/h, on two separate days. Sagittal angles for the shank, knee, hip and pelvis were measured simultaneously with three IMUs and the MAS at the point of contact (POC), the timing when the foot initially hits the ground, as identified by IMU system acceleration, and compared to the POC identified via force plate. Agreement between the systems was evaluated using intra-class correlation coefficients, Pearson's r, Bland-Altman limits of agreements, root mean square error and paired t-tests. The IMU system reliably determined POC (which subsequently was used to calculate stride time) and measured hip flexion angle and anterior pelvic tilt accurately and consistently at POC. However, it displayed inaccuracy and inconsistency in measuring knee flexion and shank angles at POC. This information provides confidence that a portable IMU system can aid in establishing baseline running biomechanics for performance optimisation, and/or inform injury prevention programs.
Kinetic demands of sprinting shift across the acceleration phase: Novel analysis of entire force waveforms

Abstract:A novel approach of analyzing complete ground reaction force waveforms rather than discrete kinetic variables can provide new insight to sprint biomechanics. This study aimed to understand how these waveforms are associated with better performance across entire sprint accelerations. Twenty-eight male track and field athletes (100-m personal best times: 10.88 to 11.96 seconds) volunteered to participate. Ground reaction forces produced across 24 steps were captured during repeated (two to five) maximal-effort sprints utilizing a 54-force-plate system. Force data (antero-posterior, vertical, resultant, and ratio of forces) across each contact were registered to 100% of stance and averaged for each athlete. Statistical parametric mapping (linear regression) revealed specific phases of stance where force was associated with average horizontal external power produced during that contact. Initially, antero-posterior force production during mid-late propulsion (eg, 58%-92% of stance for the second ground contact) was positively associated with average horizontal external power. As athletes progressed through acceleration, this positive association with performance shifted toward the earlier phases of contact (eg, 55%-80% of stance for the eighth and 19%-64% for the 19th ground contact). Consequently, as athletes approached maximum velocity, better athletes were more capable of attenuating the braking forces, especially in the latter parts of the eccentric phase. These unique findings demonstrate a shift in the performance determinants of acceleration from higher concentric propulsion to lower eccentric braking forces as velocity increases. This highlights the broad kinetic requirements of sprinting and the conceivable need for athletes to target improvements in different phases separately with demand-specific exercises.
Intersegmental Dynamics Analysis of the Lower Limb in Sprint Running

Abstract:Based on the kinematic and dynamic measurement and the intersegmental dynamics, the present study investigates the function of active muscle torque and different passive torques on lower limb joints during maximal sprint running in order to get insights into the effect of movement control on sport performance and injury prevention. Methods The subjects were 8 national level sprinters (best performance: 10.27 s–10.80 s). High-speed infra-red motion analysis system with 8 cameras (300 Hz) and force-plate system (1200Hz) were used to record kinematic and ground reaction force data synchronously. Based on inverse dynamics and intersegmental dynamics model, various interaction torques of lower limb during sprinting maximal speed phase were quantified. Results The results revealed that the dominating passive torque during the ground contact phase was the ground reaction torque (GRT), which acted to extend the knee joint during the initial stage of ground contact. The muscle produced a flexion torque in order to counter-balance the effect of GRT. This may lead to potential injury of hamstring muscles. In contrast, the inertial torque (the motion-dependent torque) dominated during the swing phase of sprinting, which reached its maximum during the later swing phase. Conclusion Both the initial stage of ground contact phase and the later swing phase of sprinting were considered as major phases in which hamstring muscle strain injury may occur. The muscle strain injury is a main limiting factor for enhancing sport performance.
Validity and reproducibility of foot motion analysis using a stretch strain sensor

Abstract:Background: Multi-segment foot analysis is traditionally challenging to perform while subjects are wearing footwear or a foot orthosis and is difficult to apply in the clinical setting. A recently developed stretch strain sensor (STR), that is thin and highly flexible, may solve this limitation because it does not require observation using a camera and is highly portable. Research question: This study aimed to examine the reproducibility and validity of foot motion analysis using the STR during walking and running by comparing it with a conventional motion capture system. Methods: Twenty-one healthy participants were examined in this study. The STR was placed on the participant's foot in one of two locations in separate experiments (spring ligament; SL and navicular drop; ND methods). Foot kinematic data during walking and running were simultaneously recorded using the STR and a three-dimensional motion capture system. Intra-class correlation (ICC) was used to assess test-retest reproducibility of the STR method. Cross-correlation coefficient evaluated the similarity of the pattern of the signals between the two systems. Pearson and Spearman correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationships between the STR measurement and angular excursion of the forefoot or hindfoot. Results: The ICCs of the SL method were 0.95 and 0.96, and those of the ND method were 0.93 and 0.71 during walking and running, respectively. In the SL method, the pattern of the signals between the STR and forefoot frontal motion was strongly correlated. The STR measurement was significantly correlated with forefoot eversion excursion (walking: r=-0.67, running: r=-0.64, p < 0.01 each). In the ND method, the STR signal was not associated with forefoot and hindfoot kinematics. Significance: Our results showed that the STR has acceptable reproducibility and validity of foot motion analysis. This system may enable measurement of foot motion while subjects are wearing shoes and outside the laboratory.
Effect of Advanced Footwear Technology Spikes on Sprint Acceleration: A Multiple N-of-1 Trial

Abstract:Background: In contrast with Advanced Footwear Technology-AFT running shoes for long-distance, little is known about AFT sprint spikes on performance and acceleration parameters. However, their use has become widespread since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and knowledge of their effects would seem to be an essential starting point before any clinical or socio-economic considerations. Objectives: Our objectives were to determine intra- and inter-subject sprinting performance modifications with Nike® AFT spikes (NAS) compared to standard spiked-shoes (SS). Methods: Healthy regional to national sprint athletes (n = 21, ≥ 750 pts World Athletics) performed 16 repetitions of 30-m sprints with either the NAS or SS condition during a single session, based on the multiple N-of-1 method, with pairwise randomisation and double-blind procedure. Time on 30-m sprints (Stalker radar), force-velocity profile (F0, V0, Vmax, Pmax, RF, DRF and FVP slope), and confounding factors (wind and shoe mass) were measured. Statistical analyses included a mixed linear regression model for group analyses, and randomisation test inversion and non-overlap-of-all-pair (NAP) methods for intra-individual analysis. Results: NAS improved 30-m time by a mean of - 0.02 s (SMD = 0.4, p = 0.014), with no interaction with any confounding factors. Significant changes were seen in velocity (Vmax : SMD = 0.9, p < 0.001; V0: SMD = 0.7, p < 0.001) and the horizontal ratio of force (RFmax: SMD = 0.5, p = 0.043), with no changes observed in force production. Whatever the footwear, one unit of positive wind (+ 1 m.s- 1 ) improved performance by - 0.03 s (p < 0.001). At an individual level, four athletes improved (NAP ≥ 0.69), and one had a statistical decrease in performance. Changes in F-V profiles were largely individual. Conclusions: A positive effect on sprint acceleration characteristics was observed when using Nike® AFT spikes, due to an increase in velocity and the horizontal ratio of force. A major variability in inter-individual response justifies single-case experimental designs for research on the topic. Trial registration number: NCT05881148.
Validity of Inertial Measurement Units to Measure Lower-Limb Kinematics and Pelvic Orientation at Submaximal and Maximal Effort Running Speeds

Abstract:Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have been validated for measuring sagittal plane lower-limb kinematics during moderate-speed running, but their accuracy at maximal speeds remains less understood. This study aimed to assess IMU measurement accuracy during high-speed running and maximal effort sprinting on a curved non-motorized treadmill using discrete (Bland-Altman analysis) and continuous (root mean square error [RMSE], normalised RMSE, Pearson correlation, and statistical parametric mapping analysis [SPM]) metrics. The hip, knee, and ankle flexions and the pelvic orientation (tilt, obliquity, and rotation) were captured concurrently from both IMU and optical motion capture systems, as 20 participants ran steadily at 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100% of their maximal effort sprinting speed (5.36 ± 0.55, 6.02 ± 0.60, 6.66 ± 0.71, and 7.09 ± 0.73 m/s, respectively). Bland-Altman analysis indicated a systematic bias within ±1° for the peak pelvic tilt, rotation, and lower-limb kinematics and -3.3° to -4.1° for the pelvic obliquity. The SPM analysis demonstrated a good agreement in the hip and knee flexion angles for most phases of the stride cycle, albeit with significant differences noted around the ipsilateral toe-off. The RMSE ranged from 4.3° (pelvic obliquity at 70% speed) to 7.8° (hip flexion at 100% speed). Correlation coefficients ranged from 0.44 (pelvic tilt at 90%) to 0.99 (hip and knee flexions at all speeds). Running speed minimally but significantly affected the RMSE for the hip and ankle flexions. The present IMU system is effective for measuring lower-limb kinematics during sprinting, but the pelvic orientation estimation was less accurate.
The validity of raw custom-processed global navigation satellite systems data during straight-line sprinting across multiple days

Abstract:Objectives: (1) Determine the validity of instantaneous speed and acceleration and (2) the variation in validity over time (multiple sessions) for global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) devices. Design: Repeated measures. Methods: 10-Hz GNSS devices from Statsports (n = 2, Apex Pro) and Catapult (n = 2, Vector S7) were examined, whilst a speed laser manufactured by MuscleLab (n = 1, LaserSpeed) was the criterion measure, sampling at 2.56 kHz, with data exported at 1000 Hz. Ten participants completed 40 m sprinting and changes of pace on three separate days. Root mean square error (RMSE) was used to assess the magnitude and direction of the difference between GNSS and criterion measures (instantaneous speed, instantaneous acceleration). Linear mixed models were built to assess the difference in validity across days. Results: RMSE ranged from 0.14 to 0.21 m·s-1 and 0.22 to 0.47 m·s-2 for speed and acceleration, respectively showing strong agreement. There were small variations in the agreement to criterion between days for both devices for speed (Catapult RMSE = 0.12 to 21 m·s-1; Statsports RMSE = 0.14 to 0.17 m·s-1) and for acceleration (Catapult RMSE = 0.26 to 0.47 m·s-2; Statsports RMSE = 0.22 to 0.43 m·s-2) across all movements. There was a negative linear relationship between speed and acceleration error as speed increased. Conclusions: Wearable microtechnology devices from Catapult (Vector S7) and Statsports (Apex Pro) have suitable validity when measuring instantaneous speed and acceleration across multiple days. There may be small variations during different sessions and over the speed spectrum.
Comparison of kinematics and kinetics between unassisted and assisted maximum speed sprinting

Abstract:Producing comparable/greater ground reaction forces (GRFs) at faster running speeds is beneficial for sprint performance, and assisted sprint training is used to induce faster running speed conditions. This study aimed to demonstrate the characteristics of assisted sprinting at the maximal speed phase and investigate acute differences to control sprinting. Fifteen sprinters completed control and assisted (5 kg) sprints over force platforms. Assisted sprinting increased running speed (9.3% mean difference), while propulsive mean force (−4.3%) and impulse (−12.4%) decreased, suggesting that running speed improvements were caused primarily by assisted pulling force rather than improvements in anteroposterior force production of athletes. In addition, vertical mean force increased (4.2%), probably due to braking mean force (34.2%) and impulse (32.5%) increases. Magnitude of control trial maximum speed was achieved earlier (during acceleration) in assisted trials, and net anteroposterior (includes both braking and propulsive components) mean force (67.2%) and impulse (67.9%) increased at this matched speed, suggesting that assisted sprints could be used to practice producing greater GRFs at comparable speeds. Running speed improvement by pulling force was associated with contact time decreases ( r = -.565), suggesting that shortening contact time may be important for effective assisted sprinting.

Abstract:Introduction: Advancements in technology have recently made it possible to implement effective training solutions across different environmental conditions. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of measures obtained from the innovative motorized device, Alex7 (Inosportas, Lithuania), and differences in speed and kinematic characteristics between resisted and assisted sprinting in young football players. Methods: Twenty-seven male athletes (mean age: 16.5 ± 0.8 years; height: 179.5 ± 6.9 cm; body weight: 67.7 ± 8.3 kg) each performed 30-m sprints twice under three different conditions: regular, resisted, and assisted sprinting. The Alex7 device provided the assistance and resistance during sprints. Results were compared with those from Witty timing gates. Ground contact time, flight time, stride length, and pace were measured using the OptoJump system. Reliability was assessed using two-way mixed intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for single measures, the standard error of the mean (SEM), and the coefficient of variation (CV). Pearson's correlation coefficient determined the associations between Alex7 and Witty timing systems. Criterion-referenced validity was based on the mean difference and CV. Systematic bias was determined by limits of agreement using Bland-Altman analysis. Results: Running times obtained using the Alex7 equipment exhibited good to excellent test-retest reliability between sessions (ICC, 0.83-0.94) and good to excellent correlation (Pearson's r = 0.88-0.98) between the Alex7 and Witty systems in both assisted and resisted running conditions. However, the Alex7 device consistently produced longer running times than the Witty device (up to 0.16 s difference, p < 0.001). The different running conditions produced substantial variations in kinematic variables, such as stride length, ground contact time, and running speed (p < 0.001 for all), but the effects on flight time and running pace were smaller. Discussion: The Alex7 device shows high reliability for creating resisted and assisted running conditions for young football players. However, it tends to overestimate running time, necessitating caution when assessing the time parameters.
Impact of Sled Loads on Performance and Kinematics of Elite Sprinters and Rugby Players

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the changes in resisted sprint performance and kinematics provoked by different sled loads in elite sprinters and rugby players. Methods: Eight elite male sprinters and 10 rugby union players performed 20-m sprints under 3 loading conditions (0%, 20%, and 60% body mass [BM]). Sprint time was measured in 0 to 5, 5 to 10, and 10 to 20 m, while stride length and hip, knee, and ankle angles were measured using an 8-sensor motion analysis system at the same distances. Results: Sprinters were significantly faster than rugby players in unresisted and resisted sprints using 20% BM (effect size, "ES" [90% confidence limit, CL] range: 0.65 [0.03 to 1.27]; 3.95 [3.10 to 4.81]), but these differences were not significant at 60% BM. Compared to rugby players, sprinters showed lower velocity decrement in resisted sprints using 20% BM (ES [90% CL] range: 0.75 [0.06 to 1.44]; 2.43 [0.83 to 4.02], but higher velocity decrement using 60% BM (ES [90% CL] range: 1.13 [0.43 to 1.82]; 1.46 [0.81 to 2.11]). No significant differences were detected in stride length between sprinters and rugby players for any sprint condition (ES [90% CL] range: 0.02 [-0.72 to 0.76]; 0.84 [0.13 to 1.54]). Rugby players showed higher hip flexion in resisted sprints (ES [90% CL] range: 0.30 [-0.54 to 1.14]; 1.17 [0.20 to 2.15]) and lower plantar flexion in both unresisted and resisted sprints (ES [90% CL] range: 0.78 [0.18 to 1.38]; 1.69 [1.00 to 2.38] than sprinters. Conclusions: The alterations induced by resisted sprints in sprint velocity and running technique differed between sprinters and rugby players. Some caution should be taken with general sled loads prescriptions, especially when relative loads are based on distinct percentages of BM, as training responses vary among sports and individuals.

Abstract:Running poses a high risk of developing running-related injuries (RRIs). The majority of RRIs are the result of an imbalance between cumulative musculoskeletal load and load capacity. A general estimate of whole-body biomechanical load can be inferred from ground reaction forces (GRFs). Unfortunately, GRFs typically can only be measured in a controlled environment, which hinders its wider applicability. The advent of portable sensors has enabled training machine-learned models that are able to monitor GRF characteristics associated with RRIs in a broader range of contexts. Our study presents and evaluates a machine-learning method to predict the contact time, active peak, impact peak, and impulse of the vertical GRF during running from three-dimensional sacral acceleration. The developed models for predicting active peak, impact peak, impulse, and contact time demonstrated a root-mean-squared error of 0.080 body weight (BW), 0.198 BW, 0.0073 BW ⋅ seconds, and 0.0101 seconds, respectively. Our proposed method outperformed a mean-prediction baseline and two established methods from the literature. The results indicate the potential utility of this approach as a valuable tool for monitoring selected factors related to running-related injuries.
