Abstract:This report, adapted from my talk at the 1998 Ettore Majorana Subnuclear School at Erice, proffers speculative explanations of the strong CP problem and the existence of cosmic rays beyond the GZK bound. It is based on works done with Sidney Coleman and Howard Georgi.

Abstract:At present, the Standard Model (SM) agrees with almost all collider data. Yet, three finetuning issues -- the Higgs mass problem, the strong CP problem and the cosmological constant problem -- all call for new physics. The most plausible solutions at present are weak scale SUSY, the PQWW axion and the string landscape. A re-evaluation of EW finetuning in SUSY allows for a higgsino-like LSP and naturalness upper bounds well beyond LHC limits. Rather general arguments from string theory allow for statistical predictions that m_h~ 125 GeV with sparticles beyond present LHC limits. The most lucrative LHC search channel may be for light higgsino pair production. Dark matter turns out to be a SUSY DFSZ axion along with a diminished abundance of higgsino-like WIMPs.

Then we consider possible physics beyond the SM - New symmetries (Gauge, SUSY, etc) - New particles (gauge, axion, superpartners) - New dimensions (extra, large, compact, etc) - New Paradigm (strings, branes, gravity). In conclusion, we formulate the first priority tasks for the future HEP program.

Abstract:This Report summarises the activities of the "SM and Higgs" working group for the Workshop "Physics at TeV Colliders", Les Houches, France, 2-20 May, 2005. On the one hand, we performed a variety of experimental and theoretical studies on standard candles (such as W, Z, and ttbar production), treating them either as proper signals of known physics, or as backgrounds to unknown physics; we also addressed issues relevant to those non-perturbative or semi-perturbative ingredients, such as Parton Density Functions and Underlying Events, whose understanding will be crucial for a proper simulation of the actual events taking place in the detectors. On the other hand, several channels for the production of the Higgs, or involving the Higgs, have been considered in some detail. The report is structured into four main parts. The first one deals with Standard Model physics, except the Higgs. A variety of arguments are treated here, from full simulation of processes constituting a background to Higgs production, to studies of uncertainties due to PDFs and to extrapolations of models for underlying events, from small-$x$ issues to electroweak corrections which may play a role in vector boson physics. The second part of the report treats Higgs physics from the point of view of the signal. In the third part, reviews are presented on the current status of multi-leg, next-to-leading order and of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD computations. Finally, the fourth part deals with the use of Monte Carlos for simulation of LHC physics.

Abstract:The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics is in such good agreement with experiment that it is currently accepted as providing an accurate model of reality, with the role of chiral symmetry breaking in electro-weak unification regarded as one of its major achievements. This work focusses on weaknesses in the algebraic formulation of the SM, especially the introduction of chirality, which is shown to be inconsistent with neutrinos being fermions, and conflicts with the experimental evidence that they have finite mass. The SM description of parity is also shown to be erroneous. It is argued that these errors in its algebraic formulation have had the effect of making theoretical extensions of the SM impossible, as well as wasting considerable experimental effort in trying to understand erroneous predictions of the theory.

Abstract:The successful operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent performance of the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE detectors in Run-1 and Run-2 with $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV as well as the giant leap in precision calculations and modeling of fundamental interactions at hadron colliders have allowed an extraordinary breadth of physics studies including precision measurements of a variety physics processes. The LHC results have so far confirmed the validity of the Standard Model of particle physics up to unprecedented energy scales and with great precision in the sectors of strong and electroweak interactions as well as flavour physics, for instance in top quark physics. The upgrade of the LHC to a High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC) at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy with 3 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity will probe the Standard Model with even greater precision and will extend the sensitivity to possible anomalies in the Standard Model, thanks to a ten-fold larger data set, upgraded detectors and expected improvements in the theoretical understanding. This document summarises the physics reach of the HL-LHC in the realm of strong and electroweak interactions and top quark physics, and provides a glimpse of the potential of a possible further upgrade of the LHC to a 27 TeV $pp$ collider, the High-Energy LHC (HE-LHC), assumed to accumulate an integrated luminosity of 15 ab$^{-1}$.

Abstract:One of the most important issue in soft tissue modeling is to assess the quality of the simulations. A validation protocol is presented based on two CT scans of the patient acquired before and after cranio-maxillofacial surgery. The actual bones repositioning realized during the intervention are accurately measured and reproduced. A evaluation of the soft tissue deformation is then computed using a finite element model of the face. The simulations are therefore compared, qualitatively and quantitatively, with the actual outcome of the surgery. This protocol enable to rigorously evaluate different modeling methods, and to assess the clinical relevance of soft tissue simulation in maxillofacial surgery.

Abstract:The status of the Standard Model (SM) is reviewed. We emphazize the fact that in spite of the success of the SM for the descrition of the fermionic sector, the status of the bosonic sector (gauge and scalar) suffers from many theoretical deficiencies and from the lack of empirical support. This situation, which leaves room for several types of extensions or alternatives to SM, strongly motivates the pursue of intense efforts for finding hints of New Physics (NP) effects. We present a phenomenological description valid for energies lying below the NP scale. We discuss the indirect constraints established from high precision tests at LEP1, as well as the direct tests that could be performed at future machines

Abstract: This Report summarizes the proceedings of the 2015 Les Houches workshop on Physics at TeV Colliders. Session 1 dealt with (I) new developments relevant for high precision Standard Model calculations, (II) the new PDF4LHC parton distributions, (III) issues in the theoretical description of the production of Standard Model Higgs bosons and how to relate experimental measurements, (IV) a host of phenomenological studies essential for comparing LHC data from Run I with theoretical predictions and projections for future measurements in Run II, and (V) new developments in Monte Carlo event generators.

Abstract:I discuss some central issues in particle physics which are potentially relevant to cosmology. I first briefly review the present (glorious) experimental status of the Standard Model, emphasizing that it provides a firm foundation both for early Universe cosmology and for further exploration toward the basic laws of Nature. I then provide a critique, arguing that while there are no clear discrepancies, there are several major, specific deficiencies of the Standard Model which clearly point up its provisional character. I elaborate on the story theorists have made up to address one of these problems, the problem of scattered multiplets, and show how upon following it out one finds, within existing experiments, encouragement -- bordering on evidence -- for certain ambitious ideas regarding unification and supersymmetry. I briefly describe and contrast two paradigms of supersymmetry breaking, which have markedly different experimental and cosmological consequences. I call attention to specific connections with cosmology where appropriate throughout; and near the end I make some more global remarks. Finally I venture a speculation suggesting, in a fairly concrete way, the possibility that the laws of physics cannot, in principle, be disentangled from cosmology.

On the CP Nature of the `95 GeV' Anomalies

Abstract:Under the assumption that the various evidences of a `95 GeV' excess, seen in data at the Large Electron Positron (LEP) collider as well as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), correspond to actual signals of new physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM), we characterise the underlying particle explaining these in terms of its Charge/Parity (CP) quantum numbers in a model independent way. In doing so, we assume the new object having spin-0 and test the CP-even (scalar) and CP-odd (pseudoscalar) hypotheses as well superpositions of these in its $\tau^+\tau^-$ decays. We prove that the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will be in a position to disentangle the CP nature of such a new particle.

Abstract:We review ideas relating the breaking of Supersymmetry in de Sitter (dS) space-time to amplitudes in which gravitinos are reflected from the dS horizon. A self consistent evaluation of such amplitudes leads to the estimate $m_{3/2} = K \Lambda^{1/4}$, with a constant $K$ that is not easily calculable. LHC bounds on superpartner masses, plus the structure of low energy effective field theory then imply that there must be new superfields with standard model quantum numbers in the region below $100$ TeV. Only one class of models, the Pyramid Schemes, has been found, which is compatible with one loop coupling unification. They have a new strongly coupled gauge sector with a confinement scale in the multi TeV region. We outline the general predictions of these models, which include Dirac gauginos and a novel solution of the strong CP problem. The models all appear to have a "little hierarchy problem": the expectation value of the standard model Higgs field, and its mass, must be a factor of $10$ or more smaller than the masses of the second Higgs doublet or standard model superpartners. Since all of these models contain uncertainties from the strong coupling physics, as well as the physics of the dS horizon, it is difficult to determine how serious this fine tuning problem is.

Abstract:This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Abstract:The currently accepted mathematical description of the fundamental constituents and interactions of matter is the Standard Model of particle physics. Its last missing particle, the famous Higgs boson, was observed at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2012. However, it is clear that the Standard Model cannot be the ultimate theory of Nature, and e.g. cannot account for Dark Matter or non-vanishing neutrino masses (and does not include gravity). In fact, searches for physics beyond the SM have been intensified since the Higgs boson discovery. In this article, we review the hints for new physics, called ``anomalies'', obtained in particle physics experiments within the last years. We consider both direct high-energy searches for new resonances at the LHC and indirect low-energy precision experiments. These anomalies range from the nuclear scale (approximately the mass of the proton) to the electroweak scale (i.e. the mass of the Higgs boson) to the TeV scale (the highest scale directly accessible at the LHC), therefore spanning over four orders of magnitude. After discussing the experimental and theoretical status of the anomalies, we summarize possible explanations in terms of new particles and new interactions. In particular, new Higgs bosons and leptoquarks are promising candidates. Discovery prospects and implications for future colliders are discussed.

Abstract:This document describes my talk (based on work by JoAnne Hewett, Sandip Pakvasa, Alexey Petrov, Gagik Yeghiyan and myself) given at the 2011 Meeting of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society (8/9/11-8/13/11) hosted by the Physics Department at Brown University. We perform a study of the Standard Model (SM) fit to the mixing quantity Delta M_B_s in order to bound contributions of New Physics (NP) to B_s mixing. We then use this to explore the branching fraction of B_s->mu+mu- in several models of New Physics.
