Abstract:High quality single qubits are the building blocks in quantum information processing. But they are vulnerable to environmental noise. To overcome noise, purification techniques, which generate qubits with higher purities from qubits with lower purities, have been proposed. Purifications have attracted much interest and been widely studied. However, the full experimental demonstration of an optimal single qubit purification protocol proposed by Cirac, Ekert and Macchiavello [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4344 (1999), the CEM protocol] more than one and half decades ago, still remains an experimental challenge, as it requires more complicated networks and a higher level of precision controls. In this work, we design an experiment scheme that realizes the CEM protocol with explicit symmetrization of the wave functions. The purification scheme was successfully implemented in a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor. The experiment fully demonstrated the purification protocol, and showed that it is an effective way of protecting qubits against errors and decoherence.

Abstract:We investigate novel protocols for entanglement purification of qubit Bell pairs. Employing genetic algorithms for the design of the purification circuit, we obtain shorter circuits achieving higher success rates and better final fidelities than what is currently available in the literature. We provide a software tool for analytical and numerical study of the generated purification circuits, under customizable error models. These new purification protocols pave the way to practical implementations of modular quantum computers and quantum repeaters. Our approach is particularly attentive to the effects of finite resources and imperfect local operations - phenomena neglected in the usual asymptotic approach to the problem. The choice of the building blocks permitted in the construction of the circuits is based on a thorough enumeration of the local Clifford operations that act as permutations on the basis of Bell states.

Abstract:We investigate the probabilistic cloning and purification of quantum states. The performance of these probabilistic operations is quantified by the average fidelity between the ideal and actual output states. We provide a simple formula for the maximal achievable average fidelity and we explictly show how to construct a probabilistic operation that achieves this fidelity. We illustrate our method on several examples such as the phase covariant cloning of qubits, cloning of coherent states, and purification of qubits transmitted via depolarizing channel and amplitude damping channel. Our examples reveal that the probabilistic cloner may yield higher fidelity than the best deterministic cloner even when the states that should be cloned are linearly dependent and are drawn from a continuous set.

Qubit purification speed-up for three complementary continuous measurements

Abstract:We consider qubit purification under simultaneous continuous measurement of the three non-commuting qubit operators \sigma_x, \sigma_y, \sigma_z. The purification dynamics is quantified by (i) the average purification rate, and (ii) the mean time of reaching given level of purity, (1-\epsilon). Under ideal measurements (detector efficiency \eta=1), we show in the first case an asymptotic mean purification speed-up of 4 as compared to a standard (classical) single-detector measurement. However by the second measure --- the mean time of first passage T(\epsilon) of the purity --- the corresponding speed-up is only 2. We explain these speed-ups using the isotropy of the qubit evolution that provides an equivalence between the original measurement directions and three simultaneous measurements, one with an axis aligned along the Bloch vector and the other with axes in the two complementary directions. For inefficient detectors, \eta=1-\delta <1 the mean time of first passage T(\delta,\epsilon) increases since qubit purification competes with an isotropic qubit dephasing. In the asymptotic high-purity limit (\epsilon, \delta << 1) we show that the increase possesses a scaling behavior: \Delta T(\delta,\epsilon) is a function only of the ratio {\delta}/{\epsilon}. The increase \Delta T({\delta}/{\epsilon}) is linear for small argument but becomes exponential ~ exp({\delta}/2{\epsilon}) for {\delta}/{\epsilon} large.

Abstract:Quantum state purification is crucial in quantum communication and computation, aiming to recover a purified state from multiple copies of an unknown noisy state. This work introduces a general state purification framework designed to achieve the highest fidelity with a specified probability and characterize the associated trade-offs. For i.i.d. quantum states under depolarizing noise, our framework can replicate the purification protocol proposed by [Barenco et al., SIAM Journal on Computing, 26(5), 1997] and further provide exact formulas for the purification fidelity and probability with explicit trade-offs. We prove the protocols' optimality for two copies of noisy states with any dimension and confirm its optimality for higher numbers of copies and dimensions through numerical analysis. Our methodological approach paves the way for proving the protocol's optimality in more general scenarios and leads to optimal protocols for other noise models. Furthermore, we present a systematic implementation method via block encoding and parameterized quantum circuits, providing explicit circuits for purifying three-copy and four-copy states under depolarizing noise. Finally, we estimate the sample complexity and generalize the protocol to a recursive form, demonstrating its practicality for quantum computers with limited memory.

Abstract:We describe an entanglement purification protocol to generate maximally entangled states with high efficiencies from two-mode squeezed states or from mixed Gaussian continuous entangled states. The protocol relies on a local quantum non-demolition measurement of the total excitation number of several continuous variable entangled pairs. We propose an optical scheme to do this kind of measurement using cavity enhanced cross--Kerr interactions.

Abstract:Entanglement purification describes a primitive in quantum information processing, where several copies of noisy quantum states are distilled into few copies of nearly-pure states of high quality via local operations and classical communication. Especially in the multiparticle case, the task of entanglement purification is complicated, as many inequivalent forms of pure state entanglement exist and purification protocols need to be tailored for different target states. In this paper we present optimized protocols for the purification of hypergraph states, which form a family of multi-qubit states that are relevant from several perspectives. We start by reformulating an existing purification protocol in a graphical language. This allows for systematical optimization and we present improvements in three directions. First, one can optimize the sequences of the protocol with respect to the ordering of the parties. Second, one can use adaptive schemes, where the measurement results obtained within the protocol are used to modify the protocols. Finally, one can improve the protocol with respect to the efficiency, requiring fewer copies of noisy states to reach a certain target state.

Abstract:We propose an entanglement purification scheme based on material qubits and ancillary coherent multiphoton states. We consider a typical QED scenario where material qubits implemented by two-level atoms fly sequentially through a cavity and interact resonantly with a single mode of the radiation field. We explore the theoretical possibilities of realizing a high-fidelity two-qubit quantum operation necessary for the purification protocol with the help of a postselective balanced homodyne photodetection. We demonstrate that the obtained probabilistic quantum operation can be used as a bilateral operation in the proposed purification scheme. It is shown that the probabilistic nature of this quantum operation is counterbalanced in the last step of the scheme where qubits are not discarded after inadequate qubit measurements. As this protocol requires present-day experimental setups and generates high-fidelity entangled pairs with high repetition rates, it may offer interesting perspectives for applications in quantum information theory.

Abstract:How to use shared entanglement and forward classical communication to remotely prepare an arbitrary (mixed or pure) state has been fascinating quantum information scientists. Berry has given a constructive scheme for remotely preparing a general pure state, using a pure entangled state and finite classical communication. To optimize the classical communication cost, Berry employed a coding of the high-dimensional target state. Though working in the high-dimensional cases, the coding method is inapplicable for low-dimensional systems, such as a pure qubit. Since qubit plays a central role in quantum information theory, here we propose an optimization procedure which can be used to minimize the classical communication cost in preparing a general pure qubit. Interestingly, our optimization procedure is linked to the uniform arrangement of N points on the Bloch sphere, which provides a geometric description.

Abstract:Following the work of Niu and Griffiths, in \emph{Phys.Rev.A 58, 4377(1998)}, we shall investigate the problem, how to design the optimal quantum cloning machines (QCMs) for qubit system, with the help of Bloch-sphere representation. In stead of the quality factor there, the Fiuráusek's optimal condition, where the optimal cloning machine should maximize a convex mixture of the average fidelity, is used as the optimality criterion in present protocol. Almost all of the known optimal QCMs in previous works, the cloning for states with fixed polar angle, the phase-covariant cloning, the universal QCMs, the cloning for two arbitrary pure states, and the mirror phase-covariant cloning, should be discussed in a systematic way. The known results, the optimal fidelities for various input ensembles according to different optimality criteria, are recovered here. Our present scheme also offers a general way of constructing the unitary transformation to realize the optimal cloning.

Abstract:Quantum state purification is the task of recovering a nearly pure copy of an unknown pure quantum state using multiple noisy copies of the state. This basic task has applications to quantum communication over noisy channels and quantum computation with imperfect devices, but has only been studied previously for the case of qubits. We derive an efficient purification procedure based on the swap test for qudits of any dimension, starting with any initial error parameter. Treating the initial error parameter and the dimension as constants, we show that our procedure has sample complexity asymptotically optimal in the final error parameter. Our protocol has a simple recursive structure that can be applied when the states are provided one at a time in a streaming fashion, requiring only a small quantum memory to implement.

Abstract:Dynamical decoupling can enforce a symmetry on the dynamics of an open quantum system. Here we develop an efficient dynamical-decoupling-based strategy to create the decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) for a set of qubits by optimally transferring the states of these qubits. We design to transfer the state of each qubit to all of the other qubits in an optimal and efficient manner, so as to produce an effective collective-type noise for all qubits. This collective pseudo-noise is essentially derived from arbitrarily independent real baths and needs only nearest-neighbor state transfers for its implementation. Moreover, our scheme requires only N steps to produce the effective collective-type noise for a system of N qubits. It provides an experimentally feasible and efficient approach to achieving the DFSs for encoding the protected logical qubits.

Abstract:A concern has been expressed that “the Jaynes principle can produce fake entanglement” [R. Horodecki et al., Phys. Rev. A 59, 1799 (1999)]. In this paper we discuss the general problem of distilling maximally entangled states from N copies of a bipartite quantum system about which only partial information is known, for instance, in the form of a given expectation value. We point out that there is indeed a problem with applying the Jaynes principle of maximum entropy to more than one copy of a system, but the nature of this problem is classical and was discussed extensively by Jaynes. Under the additional assumption that the state ρ(N) of the N copies of the quantum system is exchangeable, one can write down a simple general expression for ρ(N). By measuring one or more of the subsystems, one can gain information and update the state estimate for the remaining subsystems with the quantum version of the Bayes rule. Using this rule, we show how to modify two standard entanglement purification protocols, one-way hashing and recurrence, so that they can be applied to exchangeable states. We thus give an explicit algorithm for distilling entanglement from an unknown or partially known quantum state.

Abstract:We consider a quantum computation that only extracts one bit of information per $N$-qubit quantum state preparation. This is relevant for error mitigation schemes where the remainder of the system is measured to detect errors. We optimize the estimation of the expectation value of an operator by its linear decomposition into bitwise-measurable terms. We prove that optimal decompositions must be in terms of reflections with eigenvalues $\pm1$. We find the optimal reflection decomposition of a fast-forwardable operator, and show a numerical improvement over a simple Pauli decomposition by a factor $N^{0.7}$

Abstract:Quantitative characterization of two-qubit entanglement purification protocols is introduced. Our approach is based on the concurrence and the hit-and-run algorithm applied to the convex set of all two-qubit states. We demonstrate that pioneering protocols are unable to improve the estimated initial average concurrence of almost uniformly sampled density matrices, however, as it is known, they still generate pairs of qubits in a state that is close to a Bell state. We also develop a more efficient protocol and investigate it numerically together with a recent proposal based on an entangling rank-$2$ projector. Furthermore, we present a class of variational purification protocols with continuous parameters and optimize their output concurrence. These optimized algorithms turn out to surpass former proposals and our protocol by means of not wasting too many entangled states.

Exponential Separations between Quantum Learning with and without Purification

Abstract:In quantum learning tasks, quantum memory can offer exponential reductions in statistical complexity compared to any single-copy strategies, but this typically necessitates at least doubling the system size. We show that such exponential reductions can also be achieved by having access to the purification of the target mixed state. Specifically, for a low-rank mixed state, only a constant number of ancilla qubits is needed for estimating properties related to its purity, cooled form, principal component and quantum Fisher information with constant sample complexity, which utilizes single-copy measurements on the purification. Without access to the purification, we prove that these tasks require exponentially many copies of the target mixed state for any strategies utilizing a bounded number of ancilla qubits, even with the knowledge of the target state's rank. Our findings also lead to practical applications in areas involving channel learning and quantum cryptography. With further discussions about the source and extent of the advantages brought by purification, our work uncovers a new resource with significant potential for quantum learning and other applications.

Abstract:Employing the general BXOR operation and local state discrimination, the mixed state of the form \rho^{(k)}_{d}=\frac{1}{d^{2}}\sum_{m,n=0}^{d-1}(|\phi_{mn}><\phi_{mn}|)^{\otim es k} is proved to be quasi-pure, where $\{|\phi_{mn}>\}$ is the canonical set of mutually orthogonal maximally entangled states in $d\times d$. Therefore irreversibility does not occur in the process of distillation for this family of states. Also, the distillable entanglement is calculated explicitly.

Abstract:Quantum state purification is the functionality that, given multiple copies of an unknown state, outputs a state with increased purity. This will be an essential building block for near- and middle-term quantum ecosystems before the availability of full fault tolerance, where one may want to suppress errors not only in expectation values but also in quantum states. We propose an effective state purification gadget with a moderate quantum overhead by projecting $M$ noisy quantum inputs to their symmetric subspace defined by a set of projectors forming a symmetric subgroup with order $M$. Our method, applied in every short evolution over $M$ redundant copies of noisy states, can suppress both coherent and stochastic errors by a factor of $1/M$, respectively. This reduces the circuit implementation cost $M$ times smaller than the state projection to the full symmetric subspace proposed by Barenco et al. more than two decades ago. We also show that our gadget purifies the depolarised inputs with probability $p$ to asymptotically $O\left(p^{2}\right)$ with an optimal choice of $M$ when $p$ is small. The sampling cost scales $O\left(p^{-1}\right)$ for small $p$, which is also shown to be asymptotically optimal. Our method provides flexible choices of state purification depending on the hardware restrictions before fully fault-tolerant computation is available.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a method to optimize recurrence entanglement purification protocols. The approach is based on a numerical search in the whole set of SU(4) matrices with the aid of a quasi-Newton algorithm. Our method evaluates average concurrences where the probabilistic occurrence of mixed entangled states is also taken into account. We show for certain families of states that optimal protocols are not necessarily achieved by bilaterally applied controlled-NOT gates. As we discover several optimal solutions, the proposed method offers some flexibility in experimental implementations of entanglement purification protocols and interesting perspectives in quantum information processing.

Abstract:Entanglement between distant quantum systems is a critical resource for implementing quantum communication. This property is affected by external agents and can be restored by employing efficient entanglement purification protocols. In this work, we propose an entanglement purification protocol based on two entangling two-qubit operations that replace the usual controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate. These operations arise from a generalized quantum measurement and can be understood as measurement operators in a positive operator-valued measure (POVM). Furthermore, two variants of the core protocol are introduced and shown to be more practical in certain scenarios. The performance of the protocols is studied in terms of the overall success probability of reaching a Bell state and the number of purifiable states. Based on rank-two states, we can obtain analytical expressions for the success probability that we extend and refine using numerical calculations to the case of maximally entangled states (MEMS). We also consider more general rank-three states to show that our procedure is in general more convenient compared to purification protocols based on Bell diagonal states. Finally, we test the protocols using initial random states. In all cases, we find a larger performance and larger amount of purifiable states using our schemes compared to the CNOT-based purification protocol.
