Abstract:Recent improvements to the Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM) of nuclear reactions are briefly described. They concern mainly the cascade stage of reactions and a better description of nuclei during the preequilibrium and evaporation stages of reactions. The development of the CEM concerning fission is given in a separate talk at this conference. The increased accuracy and predictive power of the CEM are shown by several examples. Possible further improvements to the CEM and other models are discussed.
Schematic model for induced fission in a configuration-interaction approach

Abstract:We model fission at barrier-top energies in a simplified model space that permits comparison of different components of the residual nucleon-nucleon interaction. The model space is built on particle-hole excitations of reference configurations. These are Slater determinants of uniformly spaced orbitals characterized only by their quantum numbers and orbital energies. The residual interaction in the Hamiltonian includes the diabatic interaction connecting similar orbitals at different deformations, the pairing interaction between like nucleons, and a schematic off-diagonal neutron-proton interaction. We find that the fission reaction probability is sensitive to the off-diagonal neutron-proton interaction much more than to the pairing and the diabatic interactions. In particular, the transmission coefficients become insensitive to th e strength of the pairing interaction when the neutron-proton interaction is large. We also find that the branching ratio is insensitive to the final-state scission dynamics, as is assumed in the well-known Bohr-Wheeler theory.

Abstract:A configuration-interaction model is presented for the barrier region of induced fission. The configuration space is composed of seniority-zero configurations constructed from self-consistent mean-field wave functions. The Hamiltonian matrix elements between configurations include diabatic and pairing interactions between particles. Other aspects of the Hamiltonian are treated statistically, guided by phenomenological input of compound-nucleus transmission coefficients. In this exploratory study the configuration space is restricted to neutron excitations only. A key observable calculated in the model is the fission-to-capture branching ratio. We find that both pairing and diabatic interactions are important for achieving large branching to the fission channels. In accordance with the transition-state theory of fission, the calculated branching ratio is found to be quite insensitive to the fission decay widths of the pre-scission configurations. However, the barrier-top dynamics appear to be quite different from transition-state theory in that the transport is distributed over many excited configurations at the barrier top.

Abstract:Background: When multiple fission modes coexist in a given nucleus, distinct fragment yield distributions appear. Multimodal fission has been observed in a number of fissioning nuclei spanning the nuclear chart, and this phenomenon is expected to affect the nuclear abundances synthesized during the rapid neutron-capture process ( r -process). Purpose: In this study, we generalize the previously proposed hybrid model for fission-fragment yield distributions to predict competing fission modes and estimate the resulting yield distributions. Our framework allows for a comprehensive large-scale calculation of fission-fragment yields suited for r -process nuclear network studies. Methods: Nuclear density functional theory is employed to obtain the potential energy and collective inertia tensor on a multidimensional collective space defined by mass multipole moments. Fission pathways and their relative probabilities are determined using the nudged elastic band method. Based on this information, mass and charge fission yields are predicted using the recently developed hybrid model. Results: Fission properties of fermium isotopes are calculated in the axial quadrupole-octupole collective space for three energy density functionals (EDFs). Disagreement between the EDFs appears when multiple fission modes are present. Within our framework, the UNEDF1HFB EDF agrees best with experimental data. Calculations in the axial quadrupole-octupole-hexadecapole collective space improve the agreement with the experiment for SkM* . We also discuss the sensitivity of fission predictions on the choice of EDF for several superheavy nuclei. Conclusions: Fission-fragment yield predictions for nuclei with multiple fission modes are sensitive to the underlying EDF. Abstract:The Hauser-Feshbach fission fragment decay model, $\mathtt{HF^3D}$, which calculates the statistical decay of fission fragments, has been expanded to include multi-chance fission, up to neutron incident energies of 20 MeV. The deterministic decay takes as input pre-scission quantities - fission probabilities and the average energy causing fission - and post-scission quantities - yields in mass, charge, total kinetic energy, spin, and parity. From these fission fragment initial conditions, the full decay is followed through both prompt and delayed particle emissions, allowing for the calculation of prompt neutron and $\gamma$ properties, such as multiplicity and energy distributions, both independent and cumulative fission yields, and delayed neutron observables. In this work, we describe the implementation of multi-chance fission into the $\mathtt{HF^3D}$ model, and show an example of prompt and delayed quantities beyond first-chance fission, using the example of neutron-induced fission on $^{235}$U. This expansion represents significant progress in consistently modeling the emission of prompt and delayed particles from fissile systems.

Abstract:This work attempts to overcome the existing inconsistencies in modelling decay of fissile nucleus by inclusion of important physical effects in the model and through a systematic analysis of a large set of data over a wide range of CN mass (ACN). The model includes shell effect in the level density (LD) parameter, shell correction in the fission barrier, effect of the orientation degree of freedom of the CN spin (Kor), collective enhancement of level density (CELD) and dissipation in fission. Input parameters are not tuned to reproduce observables from specific reaction(s) and the reduced dissipation coefficient is treated as the only adjustable parameter. Calculated evaporation residue (ER) cross sections, fission cross sections and particle, i.e. neutron, proton and alpha-particle, multiplicities are compared with data covering ACN = 156-248. The model produces reasonable fits to ER and fission excitation functions for all the reactions considered in this work. Pre-scission neutron multiplicities are underestimated by the calculation beyond ACN~200. An increasingly higher value of pre-saddle dissipation strength is required to reproduce the data with increasing ACN. Proton and alpha-particle multiplicities, measured in coincidence with both ERs and fission fragments, are in qualitative agreement with model predictions. The present work mitigates the existing inconsistencies in modelling statistical decay of the fissile CN to a large extent.

Abstract:Two major recent developments in theory and computational resources created the favorable conditions for achieving a microscopic description of fission dynamics in classically allowed regions of the collective potential energy surface, almost eighty years after its discovery in 1939 by Hahn and Strassmann [1]. The first major development was in theory, the extension of the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) [2–5] to superfluid fermion systems [6]. The second development was in computing, the emergence of powerful enough supercomputers capable of solving the complex systems of equations describing the time evolution in three dimensions without any restrictions of hundreds of strongly interacting nucleons. Thus the conditions have been created to renounce phenomenological models and incomplete microscopic treatments with uncontrollable approximations and/or assumptions in the description of the complex dynamics of fission. Even though the available nuclear energy density functionals (NEDFs) are phenomenological still, their accuracy is improving steadily and the prospects of being able to perform calculations of the nuclear fission dynamics and to predict many properties of the fission fragments, otherwise not possible to extract from experiments.

Abstract:A rapidly converging 4-dimensional Fourier shape parametrization is used to model the fission process of heavy nuclei. Potential energy landscapes are computed within the macroscopic-microscopic approach, on top of which the multi-dimensional Langevin equation is solved to describe the fission dynamics. Charge equilibration at scission and de-excitation by neutron evaporation of the primary fragments after scission is investigated. The model describes various observables, including fission-fragment mass, charge, and kinetic energy yields, as well as post-scission neutron multiplicities and, most importantly, their correlations, which are crucial to unravel the complexity of the fission process. The parameters of the dynamical model were tuned to reproduce experimental data obtained from thermal neutron-induced fission of $^{235}$U, which allows us to discuss the transition from asymmetric to symmetric fission along the Fm isotopic chain.

Abstract:Atomic cascades refer—first and foremost—to the stepwise de-excitation of excited atoms owing to the emission of electrons or photons. Apart from dedicated experiments at storage rings and synchrotrons, such cascades frequently occur in astro and plasma physics, material research, surface science and at various places elsewhere. In addition, moreover, "atomic cascades" have been found a useful concept for modeling atomic behavior under different conditions, for instance, when dealing with the photoabsorption of matter, the generation of synthesized spectra, or for determining a rather wide class of (plasma) rate coefficients. We here compile and discuss several atomic cascades (schemes) that help predict cross sections, rate coefficients, electron and photon spectra, or ion distributions. We also demonstrate how readily these schemes have been implemented within JAC, the Jena Atomic Calculator. Emphasis is placed on the classification of atomic cascades and their (quite) natural breakdown into cascade computations , to deal with the electronic structure and transition amplitudes of atoms and ions, as well as the cascade simulation of those properties and spectra, that are experimentally accessible. As an example, we show and discuss the computation of dielectronic recombination plasma rate coefficients for beryllium-like gold ions. The concept of atomic cascades and its implementation into JAC can be applied for most ions across the periodic table and will facilitate the modeling and interpretation of many forthcoming observations.

Non-equilibrium Green's function approach to low-energy fission dynamics: fluctuations in fission reactions

Abstract:We present a microscopic modeling for a decay of a heavy compound nucleus, starting from a nucleonic degree of freedom. To this end, we develop an approach based on a non-equilibrium Green's function, which is combined with a configuration interaction (CI) approach based on a constrained density-functional theory (DFT). We apply this approach to a barrier-top fission of $^{236}$U, restricting the model space to seniority zero configurations of neutrons and protons. We particularly focus on the distribution of the fission probability. We find that it approximately follows the chi-squared distribution with the number of degrees of freedom $\nu$ of the order of 1, which is consistent with the experimental finding. We also show that $\nu$ corresponds to the number of eigenstates of the many-body Hamiltonian whose energy is close to the excitation energy of the system and at the same time which have significant components on both sides of a fission barrier.

Abstract:Background: Nowadays, modern microscopic approaches for fission are generally based on the framework of nuclear density functional theory (DFT), which has enabled a self-consistent treatment of both static and dynamic aspects of fission. The key issue is a DFT solver with high precision and efficiency especially for the large elongated configurations. Purpose: We aim to develop a DFT solver with high precision and efficiency based on the point coupling covariant density functional theory (CDFT), which has achieved great success in describing properties of nuclei for the whole nuclear chart. Method: We have extended the point-coupling CDFT to be based on the two-center harmonic oscillator (TCHO) basis, which matches well with the large elongated configurations during the fission process. A multidimensional constraint and the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM) have been used to analyze the fission potential energy surface (PES) and fission dynamics, respectively. To simulate the splitting process of the nascent fragments beyond scission, we also introduce a density constraint into the new CDFT framework. Results: Illustrative calculations have been done for the PESs and induced fission dynamics of two typical examples: Th226 and Pu240 . A more reasonable PES is obtained in the new framework compared to that based on the one-center harmonic oscillator (OCHO) with the same basis space. An optimization of about 0.2–0.3 MeV has been achieved for the outer fission barriers and large elongated configurations. The dynamical simulations based on CDFT-TCHO show an improved description of fission yields. A new approach to barrier-top fission dynamics

Abstract:We proposed a calculational framework for describing induced fission that avoids the Bohr-Wheeler assumption of well-defined fission channels. The building blocks of our approach are configurations that form a discrete, orthogonal basis and can be characterized by both energy and shape. The dynamics is to be determined by interaction matrix elements between the states rather than by a Hill-Wheeler construction of a collective coordinate. Within our approach, several simple limits can be seen: diffusion; quantized conductance; and ordinary decay through channels. The specific proposal for the discrete basis is to use the $K^\pi$ quantum numbers of the axially symmetric Hartree-Fock approximation to generate the configurations. Fission paths would be determined by hopping from configuration to configuration via the residual interaction. We show as an example the configurations needed to describe a fictitious fission decay $^{32}{\rm S} \rightarrow ^{16}{\rm O} + ^{16}{\rm O}$. We also examine the geometry of the path for fission of $^{236}$U, measuring distances by the number of jumps needed to go to a new $K^\pi$ partition.

Abstract:Spontaneous fission of 252Cf and fusion-induced fission of 250Cf are investigated within a multi-dimensional Langevin model. The potential-energy surface is calculated in the macroscopic-microscopic LSD+Yukawa-folded approach using the four-dimensional Fourier-over-Spheroid shape parametrization. The dynamical evolution described by the Langevin equation is coupled to neutron evaporation, thereby allowing for the possibility of multi-chance fission. Charge equilibration and excitation-energy sharing between the fragments emerging at scission are evaluated, and their de-excitation is finally computed. The correlation between various observables, particularly the isotopic properties of the fragments, is discussed and compared with the experiment whenever available. The theoretical predictions are generally in good agreement with the data.

Abstract:During the last 10 years or so the Brownian shape-motion (BSM) model has been used in numerous calculations of fission-fragment mass and charge distributions with encouraging agreement with experimental measurements. In this model the structure obtained in the fission-fragment distributions is entirely a consequence of the structures in the calculated five-dimensional (5D) potential-energy surfaces. The potential-energy model until recently did not accommodate the influence of the emerging fragment properties on the calculated potential energy. Therefore there were no odd-even effects in the calculated fission-fragment distributions. Recent extensions of the potential-energy model allow properties of the nascent fragments to be included in the potential-energy model. Application of the BSM model to execute random walks on these more detailed potential-energy surfaces led to calculated fission-fragment yields that exhibited odd-even effects, which "by eye" indicated reasonable agreement with experimental data. The present work goes a step further with a quantitative comparison between experimental and theoretical results based on the global and local odd-even staggering observables. Theoretical calculations and experimental observations both show that pairing effects and enhancement of two-nucleon relative to one-nucleon transfer in heavy-ion collisions decrease with excitation energy and implementing a damping of these quantities with excitation energy leads to improved agreement with experiment. Characteristic variations of the local staggering with charge split seen in the experimental data are also present in the calculated results.

Abstract:The saddle-to-scission dynamics of the induced fission process is explored using a microscopic finite-temperature model based on time-dependent nuclear density functional theory (TDDFT), that allows to follow the evolution of local temperature along fission trajectories. Starting from a temperature that corresponds to the experimental excitation energy of the compound system, the model propagates the nucleons along isentropic paths toward scission. For the four illustrative cases of induced fission of $^{240}$Pu, $^{234}$U, $^{244}$Cm, and $^{250}$Cf, characteristic fission trajectories are considered, and the partition of the total energy into various kinetic and potential energy contributions at scission is analyzed, with special emphasis on the energy dissipated along the fission path and the prescission kinetic energy. The model is also applied to the dynamics of neck formation and rupture, characterized by the formation of few-nucleon clusters in the low-density region between the nascent fragments.

This work addresses the gap by introducing a novel approach that couples a decay spawning dynamics algorithm with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to characterize ultrafast dynamics on the potential energy surfaces. We apply our method to a model decay cascade following K-shell ionization of IBr and subsequent K\b{eta} fluorescence decay. We examine two competing channels that undergo two decay steps, resulting in ion pairs with a total +3 charge state. This approach provides a continuous description of the electron transfer dynamics occurring during the multi-step decay cascade and molecular fragmentation, revealing the combined inner-shell decay and charge transfer timescale to be approximately 75 fs. Our computed kinetic energies of ion fragments show good agreement with experimental data.
