Abstract:We numerically investigate the thermally unstable accretion disks around black holes. We adopt an evolutionary viscous stress equation to replace the standard alpha-prescription based on the results of two MHD simulations. We find a kind of interesting oscillations on some running models in limit-cycle outburst state. The oscillations arise near the inner boundary and propagate radially outwards. We deem that they are the trapped $p$-mode oscillations excited by sonic-point instability. We directly integrate the local radiation cooling fluxes to construct the mimic bolometric light-curve. We find a series of overtones beside the fundamental harmonic on the power spectra of mimic light-curves. The frequency of the fundamental harmonic is very close to the maximum epicyclic frequency of the disk and the frequency ratio of the fundamental harmonic and overtones is a regular integer series. We suggest that the code for ray-tracing calculation must be time-dependent in virtual observation and point out the robustness of the black hole spin measurement with high frequency QPOs.

Truncated, Tilted Discs as a Possible Source of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations

Abstract:Many accreting black holes and neutron stars exhibit rapid variability in their X-ray light curves, termed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). The most commonly observed type is the low-frequency ($\lesssim 10$ Hz), type-C QPO, while only a handful of sources exhibit high-frequency QPOs ($\gtrsim 60$ Hz). The leading model for the type-C QPO is Lense-Thirring precession of a hot, geometrically thick accretion flow that is misaligned with the black hole's spin axis. However, existing versions of this model have not taken into account the effects of a surrounding, geometrically thin disc on the precessing, inner, geometrically thick flow. In Bollimpalli et. al 2023, using a set of GRMHD simulations of tilted, truncated accretion discs, we confirmed that the outer thin disc slows down the precession rate of the precessing torus, which has direct observational implications for type-C QPOs. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of those simulations and compare them with an aligned truncated disc simulation. We find that the misalignment of the disc excites additional variability in the inner hot flow, which is absent in the comparable aligned-disc simulations. This suggests that the misalignment may be a crucial requirement for producing QPOs. We attribute this variability to global vertical oscillations of the inner torus at epicyclic frequencies corresponding to the transition radius. This explanation is consistent with current observations of higher frequency QPOs in black hole X-ray binary systems.

High-Frequency QPOs and Overstable Oscillations of Black-Hole Accretion Disks

Abstract:The physical origin of high-frequency QPOs (HFQPOs) in black-hole X-ray binaries remains an enigma despite many years of detailed observational studies. Although there exists a number of models for HFQPOs, many of these are simply "notions" or "concepts" without actual calculation derived from fluid or disk physics. Future progress requires a combination of numerical simulations and semi-analytic studies to extract physical insights. We review recent works on global oscillation modes in black-hole accretion disks, and explain how, with the help of general relativistic effects, the energy stored in the disk differential rotation can be pumped into global spiral density modes in the disk, making these modes grow to large amplitudes under certain conditions ("corotational instability"). These modes are robust in the presence of disk magnetic fields and turbulence. The computed oscillation mode frequencies are largely consistent with the observed values for HFQPOs in BH X-ray binaries. The approximate 2:3 frequency ratio is also expected from this model. The connection of HFQPOs with other disk properties (such as production of episodic jets) is also discussed.

Abstract:Accreting neutron stars and black holes share a number of rapid variability characteristics, such as quasi-periodic oscillations and broad-band noise. The frequencies of these features were recently shown to be comparable to fundamental general relativistic frequencies of perturbed test-particle orbits near the compact objects. In this paper we propose a dynamical model for producing modulations in the inner disk properties at these characteristic frequencies. We postulate that a transition radius exists in the accretion disk close to the compact object and investigate its response to a broad spectrum of density fluctuations. We find that the transition radius acts as a low band-pass filter with a broadband response that is constant at frequencies lower than the inverse radial drift timescale and decreases above it as the inverse of the frequency. Moreover, the response shows strong resonances at frequencies nearly equal to the orbital, periastron-precession, and nodal-precession frequencies, thereby accounting for the observed power-density spectra of accreting compact objects and the correlations between their characteristic frequencies.

Instability and warping in vertically oscillating accretion discs

Abstract:Many accretion discs have been found to be distorted: either warped due a misalignment in the system, or non-circular as a result of orbital eccentricity or tidal deformation by a binary companion. Warped, eccentric, and tidally distorted discs are not in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, and thus exhibit vertical oscillations in the direction perpendicular to the disc, a phenomenon that is absent in circular and flat discs. In extreme cases, this vertical motion is manifested as a vertical `bouncing' of the gas, potentially leading to shocks and heating, as observed in recent global numerical simulations. In this paper we isolate the mechanics of vertical disc oscillations by means of quasi-2D and fully 3D hydrodynamic local (shearing-box) models. To determine the numerical and physical dissipation mechanisms at work during an oscillation we start by investigating unforced oscillations, examining the effect of initial oscillation amplitude, as well as resolution, boundary conditions, and vertical box size on the dissipation and energetics of the oscillations. We then drive the oscillations by introducing a time-dependent gravitational potential. A key result is that even a purely vertically oscillating disc is (parametrically) unstable to developing inertial waves, as we confirm through a linear stability analysis. The most important of these has the character of a bending wave, whose radial wavelength depends on the frequency of the vertical oscillation. The nonlinear phase of the instability exhibits shocks, which dampen the oscillations, although energy can also flow from the bending wave back to the vertical oscillation.

Abstract:The observed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in low-mass X-ray binaries have been suggested to be probably related to the characteristic oscillation modes in the inner part of a relativistic accretion disk. Here we study the non-damping oscillation modes in the disk by considering the local perturbations and viscosity effects. We find that the trapped oscillations are amplified significantly when the viscosity parameter increases and the trapped size varies when the radial wavenumber and Mach number change. Our results support that the hundred-hertz QPOs and their low fractional rms amplitudes found in some black hole X-ray binaries may be explained by the trapped non-damping oscillation modes in the inner part of an accretion disk around a rapidly rotating black hole.
'Stable' QPOs and Black Hole Properties from Diskoseismology

Abstract:We compare our calculations of the frequencies of the fundamental g, c, and p--modes of relativistic thin accretion disks with recent observations of high frequency QPOs in X-ray binaries with black hole candidates. These classes of modes encompass all adiabatic perturbations of such disks. The frequencies of these modes depend mainly on only the mass and angular momentum of the black hole; their weak dependence on disk luminosity is also explicitly indicated. Identifying the recently discovered relatively stable QPO pairs with the fundamental g and c modes provides a determination of the mass and angular momentum of the black hole. For GRO J1655-40, $M=5.9\pm 1.0 M_\sun$, $J=(0.917\pm 0.024)GM^2/c$, in agreement with spectroscopic mass determinations. For GRS 1915+105, $M=42.4\pm 7.0 M_\sun$, $J=(0.926\pm 0.020)GM^2/c$ or (less favored) $M=18.2\pm 3.1 M_\sun$, $J=(0.701\pm 0.043)GM^2/c$. We briefly address the issues of the amplitude, frequency width, and energy dependence of these QPOs.
Corotational Instability, Magnetic Resonances and Global Inertial-Acoustic Oscillations in Magnetized Black-Hole Accretion Discs

Abstract:Low-order, non-axisymmetric p-modes (also referred as inertial-acoustic modes) trapped in the inner-most region of hydrodynamic accretion discs around black holes, are plausible candidates for high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in a number of accreting black-hole systems. These modes are subject to global instabilities due to wave absorption at the corotation resonance (where the wave pattern frequency $\omega/m$ equals the disc rotation rate $\Omega$), when the fluid vortensity, $\zeta=\kappa^2/(2\Omega\Sigma)$ (where $\kappa$ and $\Sigma$ are the radial epicyclic frequency and disc surface density, respectively), has a positive gradient. We investigate the effects of disc magnetic fields on the wave absorption at corotation and the related wave super-reflection of the corotation barrier, and on the overstability of disc p-modes. For discs with a pure toroidal field, the corotation resonance is split into two magnetic resonances, where the wave frequency in the corotating frame of the fluid, $\tomega=\omega-m\Omega$, matches the slow magnetosonic wave frequency. Significant wave energy/angular momentum absorption occurs at both magnetic resonances, but with opposite signs. The combined effect of the two magnetic resonances is to reduce the super-reflection and the growth rate of the overstable p-modes. We show that even a subthermal toroidal field may suppress the overstability of hydrodynamic (B=0) p-modes. For accretion discs with mixed (toroidal and vertical) magnetic fields, two additional Alfven resonances appear, where $\tomega$ matches the local Alfven wave frequency. They further reduce the growth rate of p-modes. Our results suggest that in order for the non-axisymmetric p-modes to be a viable candidate for the observed high-frequency QPOs, the disc magnetic field must be appreciably subthermal, or other mode excitation mechanisms are at work.

On the limit cycle instability in magnetized accretion discs

Abstract:Observational evidence accumulated over the past decade indicates that accretion discs in X-ray binaries are viscously stable unless they accrete very close to the Eddington limit. This is at odds with the most basic standard accretion disc theory, but could be explained by either having the discs to be much cooler whereby they are not radiation pressure dominated, or by a more sophisticated viscosity law. Here we argue that the latter is taking place in practice, on the basis of a stability analysis that assumes that the magneto-rotational-instability (MRI) responsible for generating the turbulent stresses inside the discs is also the source for a magnetically dominated corona. We show that observations of stable discs in the high/soft states of black hole binaries, on the one hand, and of the strongly variable microquasar GRS 1915+105 on the other, can all be explained if the magnetic turbulent stresses inside the disc scale proportionally to the geometric mean of gas and total pressure with a constant of proportionality (viscosity parameter) having a value of a few times 10^{-2}. Implications for bright AGN are also briefly discussed

Abstract:Black hole X-ray binaries are ideal environments to study the accretion phenomena in strong gravitational potentials. These systems undergo dramatic accretion state transitions and analysis of the X-ray spectra is used to probe the properties of the accretion disc and its evolution. In this work, we present a systematic investigation of $\sim$1800 spectra obtained by RXTE PCA observations of GRO J1655-40 and LMC X-3 to explore the nature of the accretion disc via non-relativistic and relativistic disc models describing the thermal emission in black-hole X-ray binaries. We demonstrate that the non-relativistic modelling throughout an outburst with the phenomenological multi-colour disc model DISKBB yields significantly lower and often unphysical inner disc radii and correspondingly higher ($\sim$50-60\%) disc temperatures compared to its relativistic counterparts KYNBB and KERRBB. We obtained the dimensionless spin parameters of $a_{*}=0.774 \pm 0.069 $ and $a_{*}=0.752 \pm 0.061 $ for GRO J1655-40 with KERRBB and KYNBB, respectively. We report a spin value of $a_{*}=0.098 \pm 0.063$ for LMC X-3 using the updated black hole mass of 6.98 ${M_{\odot}}$. Both measurements are consistent with the previous studies. Using our results, we highlight the importance of self-consistent modelling of the thermal emission, especially when estimating the spin with the continuum-fitting method which assumes the disc terminates at the innermost stable circular orbit at all times.

Quasi-periodic oscillations for spherically symmetric regular black holes

Abstract:We consider the recent data sets of quasi-periodic oscillations from eight different low mass X-ray binaries. We here interpret their physical features in the context of given regular black hole solutions and verify their applicability to neutron star configurations. We evaluate the numerical constraints over the free parameters of Bardeen, Hayward and Dymnikova regular solutions by performing a set of Markov chain Monte Carlo analyses, based on the Metropolis algorithm. For each source, we evaluate the best-fit parameters, among which mass and magnetic charge, and compare and contrast them with the current literature. We also infer the corresponding innermost stable circular orbit radii and the radial extents of the accretion disks. Focusing on how to identify discrepancies among theoretical models and observations, our results show that, in most of the cases, regular black holes, in particular the Bardeen and Hayward spacetimes are slightly more suitable to describe neutron stars than Schwarzschild geometry, whereas the Dymnikova metric is ruled out.

Perturbing the Stable Accretion Disk in Kerr and 4-D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravities: Comprehensive Analysis of Instabilities and Dynamics

Abstract:The study of a disturbed accretion disk holds great significance in the realm of astrophysics, as such events play a crucial role in revealing the nature of disk structure, the release of energy, and the generation of shock waves. Consequently, they can help explain the causes of X-ray emissions observed in black hole accretion disk systems. In this paper, we perturb the stable disk formed by spherical accretion around Kerr and EGB black holes. This perturbation reveals one- and two-armed spiral shock waves around the black hole. We find a strong connection between these waves and the black hole spin parameter (a/M) and the EGB coupling constant (\alpha). Specifically, we found that as \alpha increases in the negative direction, the dynamics of the disk and the waves become more chaotic. Additionally, we observe that the angular momentum of the perturbing matter significantly affects mass accretion and the oscillation of the arising shock waves. This allows us to observe changes in QPO frequencies. Particularly, perturbations with angular momentum matching the observed $C-$ type low-frequency QPOs of the GRS 1915 + 105 source. Thus, we conclude that the possibility of the occurrence of shock waves within the vicinity of GRS 1915 + 105 is substantial.

Non-Axisymmetric g-Mode and p-Mode Instability in a Hydrodynamic Thin Accretion Disk

Abstract:It has been suggested that quasi-periodic oscillations of accreting X-ray sources may relate to the modes named in the title. We consider non-axisymmetric linear perturbations to an isentropic, isothermal, unmagnetized thin accretion disk. The radial wave equation, in which the number of vertical nodes (n) appears as a separation constant, admits a wave-action current that is conserved except, in some cases, at corotation. Waves without vertical nodes amplify when reflected by a barrier near corotation. Their action is conserved. As was previously known, this amplification allows the n=0 modes to be unstable under appropriate boundary conditions. In contrast, we find that waves with n >0 are strongly absorbed at corotation rather than amplified; their action is not conserved. Therefore, non-axisymmetric p-modes and g-modes with n>0 are damped and stable even in an inviscid disk. This eliminates a promising explanation for quasi-periodic oscillations in neutron-star and black-hole X-ray binaries.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Circumbinary discs (CBDs) arise in many astrophysical settings, including young stellar binaries and supermassive black hole binaries. Their structure is mediated by gravitational torques exerted on the disc by the central binary. The spatial distribution of the binary torque density (so-called excitation torque density) in CBDs is known to feature global large-amplitude, quasi-periodic oscillations, which are often interpreted in terms of the local resonant Lindblad torques. Here, we investigate the nature of these torque oscillations using 2D, inviscid hydrodynamic simulations and theoretical calculations. We show that torque oscillations arise due to the gravitational coupling of the binary potential to the density waves launched near the inner cavity and freely propagating out in the disc. We provide analytical predictions for the radial periodicity of the torque density oscillations and verify them with simulations, showing that disc sound speed and the multiplicity of the density wave spiral arms are the key factors setting the radial structure of the oscillations. Resonant Lindblad torques play no direct role in determining the radial structure and periodicity of the torque oscillations and manifest themselves only by driving the density waves in the disc. We also observe the formation of vortices at the inner edge of the disc, which can provide a non-trivial contribution to the angular momentum transport in the CBD and may be involved in the development of a non-axisymmetric central cavity.

The backreaction of stellar wobbling on accretion discs of massive protostars

Abstract:black In recent years, it has been demonstrated that massive stars see their infant circumstellar medium shaped into a large irradiated, gravitationally unstable accretion disc during their early formation phase. Such discs constitute the gas reservoir from which nascent high-mass stars gain a substantial fraction of their mass by episodic accretion of dense gaseous circumstellar clumps, simultaneously undergoing accretion-driven bursts and producing close-orbit spectroscopic companions of the young high-mass stellar object. We aim to evaluate the effects of stellar motion caused by the disc non-axisymmetric gravitational field on the disc evolution and its spatial morphology. In particular, we analyse the disc's propensity to gravitational instability and fragmentation and the disc's appearance in synthetic millimetre band images pertinent to the ALMA facility. We employed three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of the surroundings of a young massive star in the non-inertial spherical coordinate system, adopting the highest spatial resolution to date and including the indirect star-disc gravitational potential caused by the asymmetries in the circumstellar disc. The resulting disc configurations were post-processed with the radiation transfer tool RADMC-3D and CASA software to obtain synthetic images of the disc. We confirm that the early evolution of the accretion disc is notably different when stellar wobbling is taken into account. The redistribution of angular momentum in the system makes the disc smaller and rounder, reduces the number of circumstellar gaseous clumps formed via disc gravitational fragmentation, and prevents the ejection of gaseous clumps from the disc. The synthetic predictive images at millimetre wavelengths of the accretion disc that includes stellar wobbling are in better agreement with the observations of the surroundings of massive young stellar objects, namely black AFGL 4176 mm1, G17.64+0.16, and G353.273 than our simulations of numerical hydrodynamics that omit this physical mechanism. Our work confirms that stellar wobbling is an essential ingredient to account for in numerical simulations of accretion discs of massive protostars.

Spectral instability of black holes: relating the frequency domain to the time domain

Abstract:Recent work has shown that the quasinormal mode spectrum of black holes is unstable under small perturbations (of order $\epsilon$) of the radial potential, while the early time-domain ringdown waveform is only marginally affected. In this paper we provide further insight into the apparent tension between the frequency-domain and the time-domain descriptions by analyzing the scattering properties of the problem. In the frequency domain, we study analytically the solutions corresponding to the perturbed potential. We show that there are two qualitatively different classes of instabilities, and that both Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes are affected by what we call a "Type II" instability, i.e., an exponential migration of the mode frequencies away from their unperturbed value as the perturbing "bump" moves away from the peak of the unperturbed potential. In the time domain, we elucidate the effect of the spectral instability in terms of the causal structure of the Green's function. By using an equivalent scattering problem we confirm analytically (and show numerically) that the deviation from the unperturbed waveform in the early ringdown stage is proportional to $\epsilon$ when $\epsilon\lesssim10^{-2}$.

On the Bardeen-Petterson Effect in black hole accretion discs

Abstract:We investigate the effect of black hole spin on warped or misaligned accretion discs - in particular i) whether or not the inner disc edge aligns with the black hole spin and ii) whether the disc can maintain a smooth transition between an aligned inner disc and a misaligned outer disc, known as the Bardeen-Petterson effect. We employ high resolution 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of $\alpha$-discs subject to Lense-Thirring precession, focussing on the bending wave regime where the disc viscosity is smaller than the aspect ratio $\alpha \lesssim H/R$. We first address the controversy in the literature regarding possible steady-state oscillations of the tilt close to the black hole. We successfully recover such oscillations in 3D at both small and moderate inclinations ($\lesssim 15^{\circ}$), provided both Lense-Thirring and Einstein precession are present, sufficient resolution is employed, and provided the disc is not so thick so as to simply accrete misaligned. Second, we find that discs inclined by more than a few degrees in general steepen and break rather than maintain a smooth transition, again in contrast to previous findings, but only once the disc scale height is adequately resolved. Finally, we find that when the disc plane is misaligned to the black hole spin by a large angle, the disc 'tears' into discrete rings which precess effectively independently and cause rapid accretion, consistent with previous findings in the diffusive regime ($\alpha \gtrsim H/R$). Thus misalignment between the disc and the spin axis of the black hole provides a robust mechanism for growing black holes quickly, regardless of whether the disc is thick or thin.

Analytical and Numerical Methods for Circumbinary Disk Dynamics -- II: Inclined Disks

Abstract:(Abridged) To gain insight into the dynamical influence of a supermassive black hole binary on a circumbinary accretion disk, we investigate the binary and viscous torque densities throughout such a disk, with emphasis on the final density distribution, particularly the size and stability of the central gap between the binary and the inner edge of the disk. We limit ourselves to the simplified case of a massless viscous thin accretion disk under the influence of the gravitational potential from a binary system whose orbital plane is inclined relative to the disk. The orbital plane could be inclined if it is not coeval with the disk, or the black holes have spin angular momentum misaligned with respect to the disk's orbital angular momentum, so that the binary can precess to an inclined orientation. We employ 2D Newtonian hydrodynamics simulations to examine the influence of two model parameters: the mass ratio of the binary and the inclination angle between the binary and the disk. We investigate their impact on the density and torque distribution. In our analytical approach, we consider the stability of epicycles induced by the perturbative effect of the asymmetric inclined binary gravitational potential on Keplerian circular orbits. Through our simulations, we observe that certain configurations never attain a quasi-steady state, where the density profile averaged over many orbits stabilizes. This instability occurs when the inclination is close to 45 degrees. Furthermore, we identify configurations where there is never a persistent balance between the dynamical and viscous torque densities, as well as cases where the location of this balance oscillates or exhibits other time-dependent behavior over viscous timescales. These findings have implications for understanding both the expected gravitational-wave signal and electromagnetic counterparts from supermassive black hole binaries.
