Abstract:The paper addresses the problem of suppressing naturally the unsafe d=4 as well as the color-triplet mediated and/or gravity-linked d=5 proton-decay operators, which generically arise in SUSY-unification. It also attempts to give light masses to the neutrinos, of the type suggested by current experiments. It is noted that neither the symmetries in $SO(10)$, nor those in $E_6$, suffice for the purpose -- especially in the matter of suppressing naturally the d=5 proton-decay operators. By contrast, it is shown that a certain {\it string-derived symmetry}, which cannot arise within conventional grand unification, but which does arise within a class of three-generation string-solutions, suffices, in conjuction with $B-L$, to safeguard proton-stability from all potential dangers, including those which may arise through higher dimensional operators and the color-triplets in the infinite tower of states. At the same time, the symmetry in question permits neutrinos to acquire appropriate masses. This shows that {\it string theory plays an essential role in ensuring natural consistency of SUSY-unification with two low-energy observations -- proton-stability and light masses for the neutrinos}. The correlation between the masses of the extra $Z'$-boson (or bosons), which arise in these models, and proton-decay rate is noted.

Abstract:Neutrinoless double beta decay is the textbook example of lepton number violation, often claimed to be a probe of neutrino Majorana mass. However, it could be triggered by new physics; after all, neutrino Majorana mass requires physics beyond the Standard Model. If at least one electron were right-handed, it would automatically signify new physics rather than neutrino mass. In case both electrons were left-handed, the situation would become rather complicated, and additional effort would be needed to untangle the source for this process. We offer a comprehensive study of this issue from both the effective operator approach and the possible UV completions, including the Pati-Salam quark-lepton unification. While neutrino exchange is natural and physically preferred, our findings show that new physics can still be responsible for the neutrinoless double beta decay. In particular, the Pati-Salam theory can do the job, consistently with all the phenomenological and unification constraints, as long as the unification scale lies above 10^12 GeV, albeit at the price of fine-tuning of some scalar masses.

Abstract:A case is made for an alternative approach to unification that is based on a {\it purely gauge origin of the fundamental forces}, and is thus devoid of the Higgs-sector altogether. This approach seems to call for the ideas of local supersymmetry and preons. The advantage of this marriage of the ideas of local supersymmetry and preons, subject to two broad dynamical assumptions which are specified, are noted. These include true economy and viability as well as an understanding of the origins of (a) family-replication, (b) inter-family mass-hierarchy, and (c) diverse mass-scales which span from $M_{Planck}$ to $m_W \sim m_t$ to $m_e$ to $m_\nu$. In short, the approach seems capable of providing {\it a unified origin of the forces, the families and the mass-scales}. In the process, the preonic approach provides the scope for synthesizing a rich variety of phenomena all of which could arise dynamically through one and the same tool -- the SUSY metacolor force coupled with gravity -- at the scale of $10^{11}GeV$. The phenomena include: (i) spontaneous violations of parity, CP, B-L and Peccei-Quinn symmetry, (ii) origin of heavy Majorana mass for $\nu_R$, (iii) SUSY breaking, (iv) origins of even $m_W,~m_q$ and $m_\ell$, as well as, (v) inflation and lepto/baryo-genesis. Some intriguing experimental consequences of the new approach which could show at LEPI, LEPII and Tevatron and a {\it crucial prediction} which can be probed at the LHC and NLC are presented.

Abstract:We explore generalized global symmetries in theories of physics beyond the standard model. Theories of Z′ bosons generically contain "noninvertible" chiral symmetries, whose presence indicates a natural paradigm to break this symmetry by an exponentially small amount in an ultraviolet completion. For example, in models of gauged lepton family difference such as the phenomenologically well motivated U(1)Lμ−Lτ , there is a noninvertible lepton number symmetry which protects neutrino masses. We embed these theories in gauged non-Abelian horizontal lepton symmetries, e.g., U(1)Lμ−Lτ⊂SU(3)H , where the generalized symmetries are broken nonperturbatively by the existence of lepton family magnetic monopoles. In such theories, either Majorana or Dirac neutrino masses may be generated through quantum gauge theory effects from the charged lepton Yukawas, e.g., yν∼yτexp(−Sinst) . Leptoquark-Mediated Two-Loop Neutrino Mass in Unified Theory

Abstract:Scalar leptoquarks naturally arise within unified theories, offering a promising avenue for addressing one of the most significant challenges of the Standard Model--the existence of non-zero neutrino masses. In this work, we present a unified theory based on the SU(5) gauge group, where neutrino mass appears at the two-loop level via the propagation of scalar leptoquarks. Due to the unified framework, the charged fermion and neutrino masses and mixings are entangled and determined by a common set of Yukawa couplings. These exotic particles not only shed light on the neutrino mass generation mechanism but also help to achieve the unification of gauge couplings and are expected to lead to substantial lepton flavor violating rates, offering tangible opportunities for experimental verification. Reproducing the observed neutrino mass scale necessitates that a set of leptoquarks reside a few orders of magnitude below the unification scale--a specific feature of the proposed scenario. Moreover, maximizing the unification scale implies TeV scale new physics states, making them accessible at colliders. The diverse roles that leptoquarks play highlight the elegance and predictive ability of the proposed unified model.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of an extended SU(5) grand unified theory (GUT) that incorporates a 45-dimensional Higgs representation to address the shortcomings of the minimal SU(5) GUT, such as the inability to generate realistic fermion mass hierarchies and insufficient proton stability. By considering a hierarchical mass spectrum for the scalar components of the 45-Higgs, we demonstrate that successful gauge coupling unification (GCU) can be achieved. The color octet scalar, color triplet scalar, and color anti-triplet scalar play crucial roles in realizing GCU when their masses are significantly lighter than other components of the 45-Higgs. We focuses on the proton decay channels mediated by the exchange of the color anti-triplet scalar. Assuming that the 45-Higgs couples to all three generations of fermions, we determine the 45-Higgs Yukawa couplings with which the observed fermion mass matrices at low energies are realized. We calculate proton decay rates using the Yukawa couplings obtained from renormalization group evolutions and matching conditions at the GUT scale, thereby exploring the dependence of proton decay rates on model parameters. We find that the $p \to \nu \pi$ mode imposes the most stringent constraint on the mass of the color anti-triplet scalar $M_{S_1}$. We also study the correlations between the lower bounds on $M_{S_1}$ derived from different proton decay modes.

Abstract:The R-symmetry formalism is applied for the supersymmetric economical SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X (3-3-1) model. The generalization of the minimal supersymmetric standard model relation among R-parity, spin and matter parity is derived, and discrete symmetries for the proton stability in this model are imposed. We show that in such a case it is able to give leptons masses at just the tree level. A simple mechanism for the mass generation of the neutrinos is explored. With the new R-parity, the neutral fermions get mass matrix with two distinct sectors: one light which is identified with neutrino mass matrix, another heavy one which is identified with neutralinos one. The similar situation exists in the charged fermion sector. Some phenomenological consequences such as proton stability, neutrinoless double beta decays are discussed.

Abstract:Present neutrino data are consistent with neutrino masses arising from a common seed at some ``neutrino unification'' scale $M_X$. Such a simple theoretical ansatz naturally leads to quasi-degenerate neutrinos that could lie in the electron-volt range with neutrino mass splittings induced by renormalization effects associated with supersymmetric thresholds. In such a scheme the leptonic analogue of the Cabibbo angle $\theta_{\odot}$ describing solar neutrino oscillations is nearly maximal. Its exact value is correlated with the smallness of $\theta_{reactor}$. These features agree both with latest data on the solar neutrino spectra and with the reactor neutrino data. The two leading mass-eigenstate neutrinos present in \ne form a pseudo-Dirac neutrino, avoiding conflict with neutrinoless double beta decay.

Abstract:In the last years we have learnt a lot about neutrino masses and mixings. Neutrinos are not all massless but their masses are very small. Probably masses are small because neutrinos are Majorana particles with masses inversely proportional to the large scale M of lepton number (L) violation, which turns out to be compatible with the GUT scale. We have understood that there is no contradiction between large neutrino mixings and small quark mixings, even in the context of GUTs and that neutrino masses fit well in the SUSY GUT picture. Out of equilibrium decays with CP and L violation of heavy RH neutrinos can produce a B-L asymmetry, then converted near the weak scale by instantons into an amount of B asymmetry compatible with observations (baryogenesis via leptogenesis). It appears that active neutrinos are not a significant component of Dark Matter in the Universe. A long list of models have been formulated over the years to understand neutrino masses and mixings. With the continuous improvement of the data most of the models have been discarded by experiment. The surviving models still span a wide range going from a maximum of symmetry, with discrete non-abelian flavour groups, to the opposite extreme of anarchy.

Abstract:We present an SU(3)^_c× SU(2)^_L× SU(2)^_R× U(1)_L^× U(1)_R^→ SU(3)^_c× SU(2)^_L× SU(2)^_R× U(1)^_B-L left-right symmetric model with a discrete parity symmetry to realize a universal seesaw scenario. The model can simultaneously solve the strong CP problem without resorting to the unobserved axion and explain the 750 GeV diphoton resonance reported recently by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC. Owing to large suppressions in the two-loop induced Dirac mass terms, the Majorana mass matrices of left- and right-handed neutrinos naturally share the same structure. That allows us to quantitatively study the neutrinoless double beta decay induced by the right-handed currents.

Abstract:An elegant model is proposed by extending the Standard Model using the $\Delta(27)\times Z_3 \times Z_{10}$ symmetry within the framework of the Type-I + Type-II seesaw mechanism. This model is particularly noteworthy for its ability to restrict the atmospheric mixing angle, $\theta_{23}$, to specific values, and provides an explanation for the observed hierarchy of charged lepton masses. The neutrino mass matrix texture defined by three real parameters, predicts the three neutrino mass eigenvalues and the two Majorana phases. Furthermore, the model is tested against the experimental results of neutrino-less double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay and charged lepton flavour violation (cLFV) experiments.

Abstract:An analytical formalism, including RG running at two loop order, is used to link the supersymmetric and GUT spectra in any GUT model in which the three gauge couplings unify. In each specific GUT model, one can then fully explore the interplay between the pattern of supersymmetry breaking and the prediction for the proton lifetime. With this formalism at hand, we study three concrete GUT models: (i) Minimal SU(5) SUSY GUT, (ii) Missing Partner SU(5) SUSY GUT, and (iii) an orbifold SU(5) SUSY GUT. In each case we derive interesting conclusions about the possible patterns of the supersymmetric spectrum once the present limits on the proton lifetime are imposed, and vice versa, we obtain the predictions for the proton lifetime for specific viable choices of the SUSY spectrum.

Majorana Neutrinos and Dark Matter from Anomaly Cancellation

Abstract:We discuss a simple theory for neutrino masses where the total lepton number is a local gauge symmetry spontaneously broken below the multi-TeV scale. In this context, the neutrino masses are generated through the canonical seesaw mechanism and a Majorana dark matter candidate is predicted from anomaly cancellation. We discuss in great detail the dark matter annihilation channels and find out the upper bound on the symmetry breaking scale using the cosmological bounds on the relic density. Since in this context the dark matter candidate has suppressed couplings to the Standard Model quarks, one can satisfy the direct detection bounds even if the dark matter mass is close to the electroweak scale. This theory predicts a light pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (the Majoron) associated to the mechanism of neutrino mass. We discuss briefly the properties of the Majoron and the impact of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds.

Abstract:We discuss a scenario in which the supergravity induced soft terms, conventionally used for breaking supersymmetry, also lead to non-zero Majorana neutrino masses. The soft terms lead to the spontaneous violation of the lepton number at the gravitino mass scale $m_{3/2}$ which in turn leads to (i) the Majorana masses of ${\cal O} (m_{3/2})$ for the right-handed neutrinos and (ii) the $R$-parity breaking at the same scale. The former contributes to light neutrino masses through the type I seesaw mechanism, while the latter adds to it through neutrino-neutralino mixing. Both contributions can scale inversely with respect to $m_{3/2}$ given that gaugino and Higgsino masses are also of order $m_{3/2}$. Together, these two contributions adequately explain observed neutrino masses and mixing. One realization of the scenario also naturally leads to a $\mu$ parameter of ${\cal O} (m_{3/2})$. Despite the lepton number symmetry breaking close to the weak scale, the Majoron in the model exhibits very weak coupling to leptons, satisfying existing constraints on Majoron-lepton interactions. The right-handed neutrinos in the model have a large coupling to Higgsinos. This coupling and the relatively large heavy-light neutrino mixing induced through the seesaw mechanism may lead to the observable signals at colliders in terms of displaced vertices.

Abstract:A convincing explanation of the smallness of neutrino masses is represented by the Type-I Seesaw mechanism, where the two measured neutrino mass differences can be generated by introducing at least two right-handed neutrinos. In an ultraviolet complete model, it is possible to dynamically generate the heavy Majorana scale through the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a global Abelian symmetry and the most economical realisation consists in coupling the two exotic neutral leptons to a singlet complex scalar field. The associated Goldstone boson is often dubbed as Majoron, which may achieve a non-vanishing mass by means of a small term that explicitly breaks the Abelian symmetry. In a generic model, the neutrino and Majoron mass generation mechanisms are completely uncorrelated. In this paper, instead, we reduce the landscape of possible models proposing a unique, minimal and predictive framework in which these two types of masses are strictly tied and arise from the same source. Bounds from various terrestrial and astrophysical experiments are discussed.

Abstract:The orders of magnitude of decay rates for relatively light neutrinos are studied in the framework of the SU(2)×U(1) gauge group. The assumption is made that a hierarchy parameter ε (≈ (muon mass )÷[some new mass scale (possibly much smaller than the grand unification scale )]) plays a meaningful role in the full theory. For orientation it is first noted that the traditional νγ decay channel as well as the 3ν decay channel give neutrino lifetimes which for "typical" parameters are substantially longer than the age of the universe. Then we examine in detail some recent proposals which are claimed to result in greatly speeded-up decays into ν+Majoron, where the Majoron is a true Goldstone boson associated with spontaneous breakdown of lepton number. In a theory in which the usual Higgs doublet is augmented by a complex singlet (1-2 model) it is noted that the decay width into ν+Majoron actually vanishes to order ε5. In a theory where the doublet is augmented by a complex triplet (2-3 model) this decay is shown to vanish exactly, neglecting radiative corrections. A more general Majoron theory (1-2-3 model) is constructed and shown to also yield a vanishing tree-level decay rate for ν+Majoron decay to order ε5. Finally, the tree amplitudes in the 1-2 and 1-2-3 models are shown to give decay widths for ν+Majoron of order ε9 which correspond to lifetimes much greater than the age of the universe.

On the Breaking of the U(1) Peccei–Quinn Symmetry and Its Implications for Neutrino and Dark Matter Physics

Abstract:The Standard Model of electroweak interactions is based on the fundamental SU(2)weak × U(1)elect representation. It assumes massless neutrinos and purely left-handed massive W± and Z0 bosons to which one should add the massless photon. The existence, verified experimentally, of neutrino oscillations poses a challenge to this scheme, since the oscillations take place between at least three massive neutrinos belonging to a mass hierarchy still to be determined. One should also take into account the possible existence of sterile neutrino species. In a somehow different context, the fundamental nature of the strong interaction component of the forces in nature is described by the, until now, extremely successful representation based on the SU(3)strong group which, together with the confining rule, give a description of massive hadrons in terms of quarks and gluons. To this is added the minimal U(1) Higgs group to give mass to the otherwise massless generators. This representation may also be challenged by the existence of both dark matter and dark energy, of still unknown composition. In this note, we shall discuss a possible connection between these questions, namely the need to extend the SU(3)strong × SU(2)weak × U(1)elect to account for massive neutrinos and dark matter. The main point of it is related to the role of axions, as postulated by Roberto Peccei and Helen Quinn. The existence of neutral pseudo-scalar bosons, that is, the axions, has been proposed long ago by Peccei and Quinn to explain the suppression of the electric dipole moment of the neutron. The associated U(1)PQ symmetry breaks at very high energy, and it guarantees that the interaction of other particles with axions is very weak. We shall review the axion properties in connection with the apparently different contexts of neutrino and dark matter physics.
