Abstract:We report our preliminary results on the role of starbursts in LINERs by use of WR galaxies as a tool. The essence of this approach lies in the different FIR-radio relation of WR galaxies from the pure AGN's.

Abstract:We find that a preliminary classification of LINERs' energetics may be made in terms of the FIR-radio correlation of Wolf-Rayet galaxies. The AGN- or starburst-supported LINERs can be distinguished by their FIR-to-radio ratio, $Q\equiv L(1.4{\rm GHz})/$ $L(60\mu{\rm m})>$ or $<0.01$. It is interesting to note that almost all the LINERs with inner rings might be starburst- supported, indicating reduced AGN activities compared with those of the AGN-supported ones. We also find that a shock-heating phase for the warm dust component might be important for some starbursts at the burst age of $\ge 10^{7}$ yr, with $Q<0.001$.

A Possible Evolutionary Connection between AGN and Starburst in LINERs

Abstract:Our analysis on the two magnitude-limited samples of LINERs suggests a correlation between $L_{\FIR}/L_{\B}$ or f(25\micron)/f(60\micron), and Hubble-type index at $>$99.99% significance level. As $L_{\FIR}/L_{\B}$ and f(25\micron)/f(60\micron) are considered as the indicators of star-formation activity and AGN activity, respectively, our result suggests that LINERs with higher AGN activity may have a lower star-formation contribution. The ones with highest AGN activity and lowest star-formation contributions are ellipticals. All well-studied LINER 1s belong to this group. On the other hand, LINERs with higher star-formation activity present lower AGN contributions. We find all well-studied LINER 2s in this parameter space. Most of LINERs having inner ring structures belong to this group. Statistics with other indicators of star-formation or AGN activity (nulear mass-to-light ratio at H band, and the ratio of X-ray-to-UV power) provide further evidence for such a trend. We have seen that along with the evolution of galaxies from late-type spirals to early-type ones, and up to ellipticals, the intensity of AGN activity increases with decreasing star-formation contributions, The above analyses may suggest a possible connection between the host galaxies and nuclear activities, and it might also indicate a possible evolutionary connection between AGN and starburst in LINERs.

Abstract:Since the discovery of low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions in many galaxies (LINERs), it has been recognized that they constitute a class of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) which are thought to be powered by gas accretion onto a central, supermassive black hole. LINERs are observed in approximately one third of galaxies in the local universe and it has been often thought that they harbor an AGN-like central engine with moderate activity. However, some LINERs show no direct evidence for AGNs such as broad emission lines, radio jets, hard X-ray emission, spectral energy distributions which are inconsistent with starlight, and so on. For such LINERs (a subset of type 2 LINERs), we present new poststarburst models which explain some of their most important optical narrow emission-line ratios. In these models, the ionization sources are planetary nebula nuclei (PNNs) with temperature of ~ 10^5 K which appear in the late-phase evolution of intermediate-mass stars with mass between ~ 3 M_solar and ~ 6 M_solar. Such PNNs left in a typical starburst nucleus can produce an Halpha luminosity of L(Halpha) ~ 10^38 ergs s^-1 for typical poststarburst LINERs and ~ 10^39 ergs s^-1 only in exceptionally bright cases. The PNN phase lasts until the death of the lowest-mass stars formed in the starburst, which is ~ 5 x 10^8 yr for an assumed lower limit of the initial mass function of 3 M_solar. This long duration appears consistent with the observed higher frequency of occurrence of LINERs if every galaxy could experience the starburst activity several times in its life. We therefore propose that some LINERs which show no direct evidence for AGNs may be poststarburst nuclei powered by a cluster of PNNs.

The Narrow-Line Regions of LINERs As Resolved with the Hubble Space Telescope

Abstract:LINERs exist in the nuclei of a large fraction of luminous galaxies, but their connection with the AGN phenomenon has remained elusive. We present Hubble Space Telescope narrowband [O III]5007 and H-alpha+[N II] emission-line images of the central regions of 14 galaxies with LINER nuclei. The compact, ~1 arcsec-scale, unresolved emission that dominates the line flux in ground-based observations is mostly resolved by HST. The bulk of this emission comes from regions with sizes of tens to hundreds of parsecs that are resolved into knots, filaments, and diffuse gas whose morphology differs from galaxy to galaxy. Most of the galaxies do not show clear linear structures or ionization cones analogous to those often seen in Seyfert galaxies. An exception is NGC 1052, the prototypical LINER, in which we find a 3 arcsec-long (~ 250 pc) biconical structure that is oriented on the sky along the galaxy's radio jet axis. Seven of the galaxies have been shown in previously published HST images to have a bright compact ultraviolet nuclear source, while the other seven do not have a central UV source. Our images find evidence of dust in the nuclear regions of all 14 galaxies, with clear indications of nuclear obscuration in most of the "UV-dark" cases. The data suggest that the line-emitting gas in most LINERs is photoionized by a central source (which may be stellar, nonstellar, or a combination thereof) but that this source is often hidden from direct view. We find no obvious morphological differences between LINERs with detected weak broad H-alpha wings in their spectra and those with only narrow lines. Likewise, there is no clear morphological distinction between objects whose UV spectra are dominated by hot stars (e.g., NGC 4569) and those that are AGN-like (e.g., NGC 4579).
Nuclear symmetry energy in presence of hyperons in the nonrelativistic Thomas-Fermi approximation

Abstract:We generalise the finite range momentum and density dependent Seyler-Blanchard nucleon-nucleon effective interaction to the case of interaction between two baryons. This effective interaction is then used to describe dense hadronic matter relevant to neutron stars in the nonrelativistic Thomas-Fermi approach. We investigate the behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy in dense nuclear and hyperon matter relevant to neutron stars. It is found that the nuclear symmetry energy always increases with density in hyperon matter unlike the situation in nuclear matter. This rising characteristic of the symmetry energy in presence of hyperons may have significant implications on the mass-radius relationship and the cooling properties of neutron stars. We have also noted that with the appearance of hyperons, the equation of state calculated in this model remains causal at high density.

Abstract:The results of Chandra snapshot observations of 11 LINERs (Low-Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Regions), three low-luminosity Seyfert galaxies, and one HII-LINER transition object are presented. Our sample consists of all the objects with a flat or inverted spectrum compact radio core in the VLA survey of 48 low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN) by Nagar et al. (2000). An X-ray nucleus is detected in all galaxies except one and their X-ray luminosities are in the range 5x10^38 to 8x10^41 ergs s^-1. The X-ray to Halpha luminosity ratios for 11 out of 14 objects are in good agreement with the value characteristic of LLAGNs and more luminous AGNs, and indicate that their optical emission lines are predominantly powered by a LLAGN. For three objects, this ratio is less than expected. Comparing with multi-wavelength results, we find that these three galaxies are most likely to be heavily obscured AGN. We compare the radio to X-ray luminosity ratio of LLAGNs with those of more-luminous AGNs, and confirm the suggestion that a large fraction of LLAGNs are radio loud.

Abstract:We have conducted a series of investigations on the geometry of the reddening material in AGNs, which have important implications to the AGN unification and SMBH demography. According to our statistics of partially obscured quasars, we found that SMBHs in partially obscured type/phase (i.e., intermediate type) are at least as abundant as normal quasars in the local Universe; the reddening material in most objects are located in between the BLR and NLR. According to our comparison of narrow lines in type 1 and 2 AGNs, we found that for high-ionization or high-critical density narrow lines (e.g. OIII 5007, Balmer lines and FeII) a significant fraction of the emission arises from the inner dense part of the NLR; this inner NLR is located very close to the central engine and thus can be covered by the torus.

Abstract:Many nearby galaxies show optical evidence for low-luminosity AGNs that are Ear less luminous than classical Seyfert nuclei and QSOs. LINERs, the most common variety of such emission-line objects, comprise similar to 1/3 of nearby galaxies, and may serve as an important "missing link" between normal and Seyfert galaxies. To shed light on the physical origin of LINERs, which remains controversial, we are conducting a high-resolution continuum survey of a representative sample of galaxies using the VLA to search for compact radio cores. Wie additionally discuss the dramatic radio variability in the LINER nucleus of M81.

Abstract:The analysis of the X-ray data for a sample of 51 LINER nuclei with available X-ray Chandra imaging is reported. Our aim was to investigate the physical mechanisms which power LINER nuclear activity. The use of multiwavelenght information at radio, UV, optical HST and X-ray lead us to conclude that at least 60% of the LINERs are hosting a low luminosity AGN in their nuclei. This percentage may be even higher if the Compton-thickness of some nuclei (mostly with SB-like hard X-ray morphology) is confirmed.
Starbursts in Barred Spiral Galaxies. III. Definition of a homogeneous sample of Starburst Nucleus Galaxies

Abstract:This paper presents optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of 105 barred Markarian IRAS galaxies. These observations are used to determine the spectral type of emission-line regions in the nucleus and along the bar of the galaxies, in order to define a homogeneous sample of Starburst Nucleus Galaxies (SBNGs). Our selection criteria have been very efficient for selecting star-forming galaxies, since our sample of 221 emission-line regions includes 82% nuclear or extranuclear starbursts. The contamination by Seyferts is low (9%). The remaining galaxies (9%) are objects with ambiguous classification (HII or LINER). The dust content and Halpha luminosity increase towards the nuclei of the galaxies. No significant variation of the electron density is found between nuclear and bar HII regions. However, the mean Halpha luminosity and electron density in the bar are higher than in typical disk HII regions. We investigate different mechanisms for explaining the excess of nitrogen emission observed in our starburst nuclei. There is no evidence for the presence of a weak hidden active galactic nucleus in our starburst galaxies. The cause of this excess is probably a selective enrichment of nitrogen in the nuclei of the galaxies, following a succession of short and intense bursts of star formation. Our sample of SBNGs, located at a mean redshift of 0.015, has moderate Halpha (10^41 erg/s) and far infrared (10^10 Lsun) luminosities. The types are distributed equally among early- and late-type giant spirals with a slight preference for Sbc/Sc types because of their barred morphology. The majority (62%) of SBNGs are isolated with no sign of gravitational interaction. In terms of distance, luminosity and level of interaction, SBNGs are intermediate between HII galaxies and luminous infrared galaxies.

Abstract:This review presents a personal view of the role that starbursts play in the star formation history of the universe. It is mainly focused on the properties of nearby starburst galaxies selected for their strong UV and/or FIR emission. The similarities between local starbursts and star-forming galaxies at high redshift are also presented. I discuss too the role that LIRGs and ULIRGs and merging systems play in the formation and evolution of galaxies.

Variability in LINERs

Abstract:A small number of LINERs have been seen to display variable H-alpha emission with a very broad, double-peaked profile. Recent observations with the Hubble Space Telescope indicate that such emission may be a common attribute of LINERs. The double-peaked or double-shouldered line profiles resemble those found in a subset of broad-line radio galaxies. Several lines of argument suggest that such features trace an outer thin accretion disk irradiated by an inner ion torus, in accord with advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) models. Variability monitoring of this broad H-alpha component thus may provide a means of testing accretion physics on small scales within these sources.

Abstract:We report on the structural properties of mixed aggregates made from rare-earth inorganic nanoparticles (radius 20 Angstroms) and polyelectrolyte-neutral block copolymers in aqueous solutions. Using scattering experiments and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that these mixed aggregates have a hierarchical core-shell microstructure. The core is made of densely packed nanoparticles and it is surrounded by a corona of neutral chains. This microstructure results from a process of controlled association and confers to the hybrid aggregates a remarkable colloidal stability.

Optical Spectroscopy of LINERs and Low-Luminosity Seyfert Nuclei

Abstract:An unprecedentedly large number of LINERs has been discovered in a recently completed optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies, allowing several statistical properties of the host galaxies and of the line-emitting regions to be examined reliably for the first time. As a consequence of the many detections and some revised classifications, the detailed demographics of emission-line nuclei have been updated from those given in older surveys. Consistent with previous studies, it is found that LINERs are extremely common in the present epoch, comprising approximately 1/3 of all galaxies with B <= 12.5 mag. If all LINERs are nonstellar in origin, then they are the dominant constituents of the active galactic nucleus population. Many fundamental characteristics of LINERs closely resemble those of low-luminosity Seyfert nuclei, although several aspects of their narrow-line regions appear to differ in a systematic manner. These differences could hold important clues to the key parameters controlling the ionization level in active nuclei. Lastly, a substantial fraction of LINERs has been found to contain a broad-line region, yielding direct evidence, at least in these objects, of a physical link between LINERs and classical Seyfert 1 nuclei and QSOs.
A closer look at the origin of LINER emission and its connection to evolved stars with a machine learning classification scheme

Abstract:Identifying the dominant ionizing sources in galaxies is essential for understanding their formation and evolution. Traditionally, spectra are classified based on their dominant ionizing source using strong emission lines and Baldwin, Phillips, \& Terlevich (BPT) diagrams. The ionizing source is traditionally determined by the emission line ratios using the BPT diagrams. Low-Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Regions (LINERs) are a class of ionizing mechanisms that is observationally identified but with a poorly understood origin, unlike the case of star forming regions and active galactic nuclei (AGN). LINERs, typically found in early-type galaxies, are often associated with low-luminosity AGN activity but may also be powered by aging stellar populations, particularly post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (p-AGB) stars. In this study, we employ a machine-learning-based encoder, Spender, to analyze the full MaNGA IFU spectra and identify key spectral features of LINERs. By examining the continuum and line emission of these spaxels, our approach aims to uncover hidden patterns and better understand the dominant ionizing sources. We show in this work that the neural network-based encoder was able identify LINER sources from the stellar continuum alone. The characteristics of the stellar population underlying LINER regions are consistent with evolved low mass stars implying that the source driving LINER emission is probably p-AGB stars rather than AGN activity.

A Reevaluation of the Excitation Mechanism of Liners

Abstract:We present high-quality spectra of a sample of 13 low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs) observed in the range approximately 3400-9800 angstrom at approximately 5-8 angstrom resolution. Starlight removal is achieved by the subtraction of a suitable absorption-line ''template'' galaxy, allowing accurate measurement of emission lines. We use the line fluxes to examine several candidates for the excitation mechanism of those LINERs whose emission-line gas is largely confined to radii less than or similar to 200 pc. We find that photoionization by a nonstellar ionizing continuum provides the best overall explanation for the spectra over the optical-to-near-infrared region. This is supported by the detection of broad Halpha emission, a correlation between line width and critical density of the forbidden lines, and pointlike X-ray emission in several of these objects. Wolf-Rayet stars or unusually hot O stars are less probable photoionization sources, especially for LINERs which exhibit broad Halpha emission. The prevalence of shock heating in galactic nuclei cannot be readily evaluated with the present plane-parallel shock models, although it is likely to be an important,excitation mechanism for LINERs with spatially extended emission. A small fraction of objects previously classified as LINERs may be undergoing active star formation in or near their nuclei.
Further Clues to the Nature of Composite LINER/H II Galaxies

Abstract:We have analyzed new, archival and published high resolution radio and X-ray observations of a sample of composite LINER/H II galaxies known to exhibit AGN-like properties. Five of the 16 AGN candidates have milliarcsecond-scale detections and are found to display a compact, flat spectrum, high brightness temperature radio core, four of which also exhibit extended radio emission. Five of the eight AGN candidates with available high resolution X-ray observations were found to possess a hard X-ray nuclear source, two of which have no milliarcsecond radio detection. The combined high resolution radio and X-ray data yield a 50% detection rate of low luminosity AGN among the AGN candidates, which translates into a 12% detection rate for the entire composite LINER/H II sample. In the sources where the AGN has been unambiguously detected, the ionizing power of the AGN is not sufficient to generate the observed emission lines, unless the hard X-rays are heavily obscured. We attempt to apply a canonical advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) and jet model to the sample sources in order to explain the observed radio and X-ray emission. While ADAFs may be responsible for the observed emission in submillijansky radio cores like NGC 7331, they do not appear consistent with the radio emission observed in the milliarcsecond-scale radio detected cores; the latter sources are more likely to have an energetically important contribution from a radio-emitting jet.
The Starburst - Active Galactic Nucleus Connection: the Role of Young Stellar Populations in Fueling Supermassive Black Holes

Abstract:Tracing the star formation history in circumnuclear regions (CNRs) is a key step toward understanding the starburst -active galactic nucleus (AGN) connection. However, bright nuclei outshining the entire host galaxy prevent the analysis of the stellar populations of CNRs around type-I AGNs. Obscuration of the nuclei by the central torus provides a unique opportunity to study the stellar populations of AGN host galaxies. We assemble a sample of 10,848 type-II AGNs with a redshift range of 0.03 <= z <= 0.08 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Data Release 4, and measure the mean specific star formation rates (SSFRs) over the past 100 Myr in the central similar to 1-2 kpc. We find a tight correlation between the Eddington ratio (lambda) of the central black hole (BH) and the mean SSFR, strongly implying that supernova explosions (SNexp) play a role in the transportation of gas to galactic centers. We outline a model for this connection by accounting for the role of SNexp in the dynamics of CNRs. In our model, the viscosity of turbulence excited by SNexp is enhanced, and thus angular momentum can be efficiently transported, driving inflows toward galactic centers. Our model explains the observed relation. lambda alpha SFR(1.5-2.0), suggesting that AGNs are triggered by SNexp in CNRs.
Radio and Mid-Infrared Properties of Compact Starbursts: Distancing Themselves from the Main Sequence

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between 8.44\,GHz brightness temperatures and 1.4 to 8.44\,GHz radio spectral indices with 6.2\,$\mu$m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission and 9.7\,$\mu$m silicate absorption features for a sample of 36 local luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies. We find that galaxies having small 6.2\,$\mu$m PAH equivalent widths (EQWs), which signal the presence of weak PAH emission and/or an excess of very hot dust, also have flat spectral indices. The three active galactic nuclei (AGN) identified through their excessively large 8.44\,GHz brightness temperatures are also identified as AGN via their small 6.2\,$\mu$m PAH EQWs. We also find that the flattening of the radio spectrum increases with increasing silicate optical depth, 8.44\,GHz brightness temperature, and decreasing size of the radio source even after removing potential AGN, supporting the idea that compact starbursts show spectral flattening as the result of increased free-free absorption. These correlations additionally suggest that the dust obscuration in these galaxies must largely be coming from the vicinity of the compact starburst itself, and is not distributed throughout the (foreground) disk of the galaxy. Finally, we investigate the location of these infrared-bright systems relative to the main sequence (star formation rate vs. stellar mass) of star-forming galaxies in the local universe. We find that the radio spectral indices of galaxies flattens with increasing distance above the main sequence, or in other words, with increasing specific star formation rate. This indicates that galaxies located above the main sequence, having high specific star formation rates, are typically compact starbursts hosting deeply embedded star formation that becomes more optically thick in the radio and infrared with increased distance above the main sequence.
