Abstract:We examine atmospheric heating by radio active galactic nuclei (AGN) in distant X-ray clusters by cross correlating clusters selected from the 400 Square Degree (400SD) X-ray Cluster survey with radio sources in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. Roughly 30% of the clusters show radio emission above a flux threshold of 3 mJy within a projected radius of 250 kpc. The radio emission is presumably associated with the brightest cluster galaxy. The mechanical jet power for each radio source was determined using scaling relations between radio power and cavity (mechanical) power determined for nearby clusters, groups, and galaxies with hot atmospheres containing X-ray cavities. The average jet power of the central radio AGN is approximately $2\times 10^{44}$\ergs. We find no significant correlation between radio power, hence mechanical jet power, and the X-ray luminosities of clusters in the redshift range 0.1 -- 0.6. This implies that the mechanical heating rate per particle is higher in lower mass, lower X-ray luminosity clusters. The jet power averaged over the sample corresponds to an atmospheric heating of approximately 0.2 keV per particle within R$_{500}$. Assuming the current AGN heating rate does not evolve but remains constant to redshifts of 2, the heating rate per particle would rise by a factor of two. We find that the energy injected from radio AGN contribute substantially to the excess entropy in hot atmospheres needed to break self-similarity in cluster scaling relations. The detection frequency of radio AGN is inconsistent with the presence of strong cooling flows in 400SD clusters, but does not exclude weak cooling flows. It is unclear whether central AGN in 400SD clusters are maintained by feedback at the base of a cooling flow. Atmospheric heating by radio AGN may retard the development of strong cooling flows at early epochs.

Abstract:We estimate the heating of the intergalactic medium due to shocks arising from structure formation. Heating of the gas outside the collapsed regions, with small overdensities (${n_b \over {\bar n_b}}\ll 200$) is considered here, with the aid of Zel'dovich approximation. We estimate the equation of state of this gas, relating the density with its temperature, and its evolution in time, considering the shock heating due to one-$\sigma$ density peaks as being the most dominant. We also estimate the mass fraction of gas above a given temperature as a function of redshift. We find that the baryon fraction above $10^6$ K at $z=0$ is $\sim 10 %$. We estimate the integrated Sunyaev-Zel'dovich distortion from this gas at present epoch to be of order $10^{-6}$.

Resonant scattering of X-rays by the warm intergalactic medium

Abstract:For the low density filamentary and sheet-like structures in the warm ($\sim 10^4$ to $\sim 10^6$ K) IGM predicted by numerical simulations the resonant line scattering of X-ray background (XRB) photons by He and H-like ions of heavy elements can exceed the ``local'' thermal emission by a factor of a few or more. Due to the conservative nature of scattering this resonantly scattered radiation can only be identified if a significant fraction of the XRB is resolved and removed. While the combined spectrum of the resolved sources will contain X-ray absorption features, the residual background will contain corresponding emission features with the same intensity. At the relevant densities and temperatures the lines of He and H-like oxygen at 0.57 and 0.65 keV are most promising. These lines (which have a typical width of $\sim$ 1-2 eV) may contain up to 50% of the total 0.5-1 keV emission of the filament. For a nearby ($z \la 0.1$) filament with a Thomson optical depth of $10^{-4}$ XMM should detect about 200 photons in the OVII line during a $10^5$ s exposure if the metallicity of the gas is as large as observed in galaxy clusters. On average up to a few percent of the soft XRB could be resonantly scattered by this phase of the IGM and resonantly scattered photons should account for a significant fraction of the truly diffuse background at low energies. Close to bright X-ray sources like galaxy clusters or AGN the flux of scattered radiation will be further enhanced. Off-line blazars are the most promising illuminating sources. The scattered emission from AGN may also constrain the duration of the active phase of these objects.

The entropy and energy of intergalactic gas in galaxy clusters

Abstract:Studies of the X-ray surface brightness profiles of clusters, coupled with theoretical considerations, suggest that the breaking of self-similarity in the hot gas results from an `entropy floor', established by some heating process, which affects the structure of the intracluster gas strongly in lower mass systems. Fitting analytical models for the radial variation in gas density and temperature to X-ray spectral images from the ROSAT PSPC and ASCA GIS, we derive gas entropy profiles for 20 galaxy clusters and groups. Scaling these profiles to coincide in the self-similar case, the lowest mass systems are found to have higher scaled entropy profiles than more massive systems. This appears to be due to a baseline entropy of 70-140 h50^-1/3 keV cm^2, depending on the extent to which shocks have been suppressed in low mass systems. The extra entropy may be present in all systems, but is detectable only in poor clusters, compared to the entropy generated by gravitational collapse. This excess entropy appears to be distributed uniformly with radius outside the central cooling regions. We determine the energy associated with this entropy floor, by studying the net reduction in binding energy of the gas in low mass systems, and find that it corresponds to a preheating temperature of ~0.3 keV. Since the relationship between entropy and energy injection depends upon gas density, we can combine the excesses of 70-140 keV cm^2 and 0.3 keV to derive the typical electron density of the gas into which the energy was injected. The resulting value of 1-3x10^-4 h50^1/2 cm-3, implies that the heating must have happened prior to cluster collapse but after a redshift z~7-10. The energy requirement is well matched to the energy from supernova explosions responsible for the metals which now pollute the intracluster gas.

High Mass X-ray Binaries and the Cosmic 21-cm Signal: Impact of Host Galaxy Absorption

Abstract:By heating the intergalactic medium (IGM) before reionization, X-rays are expected to play a prominent role in the early Universe. The cosmic 21-cm signal from this "Epoch of Heating" (EoH) could serve as a clean probe of high-energy processes inside the first galaxies. Here we improve on prior estimates of this signal by using high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations to calculate the X-ray absorption due to the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. X-rays absorbed inside the host galaxy are unable to escape into the IGM and contribute to the EoH. We find that the X-ray opacity through these galaxies can be approximated by a metal-free ISM with a typical column density of log[N / cm^-2] = 21.4 +0.40-0.65. We compute the resulting 21-cm signal by combining these ISM opacities with public spectra of high-mass X-ray binaries (thought to be important X-ray sources in the early Universe). Our results support "standard scenarios" in which the X-ray heating of the IGM is inhomogeneous, and occurs before the bulk of reionization. The large-scale (k ~ 0.1/Mpc) 21-cm power reaches a peak of ~100 mK^2 at z = 10 - 15, with the redshift depending on the cosmic star formation history. This is in contrast to some recent work, motivated by the much larger X-ray absorption towards local HMXBs inside the Milky Way. Our main results can be reproduced by approximating the X-ray emission from HMXBs with a power-law spectrum with energy index alpha = 1, truncated at energies below 0.5 keV.

Intergalactic medium heating by dark matter

Abstract:We derive the evolution of the energy deposition in the intergalactic medium (IGM) by dark matter (DM) decays/annihilations for both sterile neutrinos and light dark matter (LDM) particles. At z > 200 sterile neutrinos transfer a fraction f_abs~0.5 of their rest mass energy into the IGM; at lower redshifts this fraction becomes <~ 0.3 depending on the particle mass. The LDM particles can decay or annihilate. In both cases f_abs~0.4-0.9 at high (> 300) redshift, dropping to ~0.1 below z=100. These results indicate that the impact of DM decays/annihilations on the IGM thermal and ionization history is less important than previously thought. We find that sterile neutrinos (LDM) decays are able to increase the IGM temperature by z=5 at most up to 4K (100K), about 50-200 times less than predicted by estimates based on the assumption of complete energy transfer to the gas.

Entropy Evolution in Galaxy Groups and Clusters; A Comparison of External and Internal Heating

Abstract:X-ray observations of hot gas in galaxy groups indicate higher entropies than can be achieved in the accretion shocks as it fell into the dark halos. It has been proposed that this entropy excess results from some universal external heating process in the early universe - AGN, population III stars, etc. - that occurred before most of the gas entered the dark halos. Alternatively, the hot gas in groups may be heated internally by Type II supernovae when the galactic stars formed. We investigate here the gas-dynamical consequences of various amounts of external, high redshift heating and compare with internal supernova heating. Radiative losses and distributed mass dropout are included. We find that externally heated flows are unsatisfactory; when the heating is high enough to bring the X-ray luminosities into agreement with observations, the gas entropy is too high. Flows internally heated by Type II supernovae are preferred. Our results are insensitive to the epoch and spatial distribution of the supernova heating process. However, with a Salpeter IMF a large fraction of the energy produced by supernovae must heat the hot gas. Alternatively, only about 20 percent of the Type II supernova energy would be required to heat the gas if the initial mass function is flatter than Salpeter, as suggested by stellar mass to light ratios.

Abstract:Both pre‐heating of the intergalactic medium and radiative cooling of low entropy gas have been proposed to explain the deviation from self‐similarity in the cluster LX–TX relation and the observed entropy floor in these systems. However, severe overcooling of gas in groups is necessary for radiative cooling alone to explain the observations. Non‐gravitational entropy injection must therefore still be important in these systems. We point out that, on scales of groups and below, gas heated to the required entropy floor cannot cool in a Hubble time, regardless of its subsequent adiabatic compression. Pre‐heating therefore shuts off the gas supply to galaxies, and should be an important global feedback mechanism for galaxy formation. Constraints on global gas cooling can be placed from the joint evolution of the comoving star formation rate and neutral gas density. Pre‐heating at high redshift can be ruled out; however, the data do not rule out passive gas consumption without inflow as z∼ 2. Because for pre‐heated gas tcool > tdyn, we speculate that pre‐heating could play a role in determining the Hubble sequence; at a given mass scale, high σ peaks in the density field collapse early to form ellipticals, while low σ peaks collapse late and quiescently accrete pre‐heated gas to form spirals. The entropy produced by large‐scale shock‐heating of the intergalatic medium is significant only at late times, z < 1, and cannot produce these effects.

Abstract:It is now generally agreed that some process prevents the diffuse gas in galaxy clusters from cooling significantly, although there is less agreement about the nature of this process. I suggest that cluster gas may be heated by a natural extension of the mechanism establishing the $\mbh-\sigma$ and $\mbh - M_{\rm bulge}$ relations in galaxies, namely outflows resulting from super--Eddington accretion on to the galaxy's central black hole. The black holes in cD galaxies are sporadically fed at unusually high Eddington ratios. These are triggered as the cluster gas tries to cool, but rapidly quenched by the resulting shock heating. This mechanism is close to the optimum efficiency for using accretion energy to reheat cluster gas, and probably more effective than `radio mode' heating by jets for example. The excess energy is radiated in active phases of the cD galaxy nucleus, probably highly anisotropically.

Signatures of Cosmic Ray Heating in 21-cm Observables

Abstract:Cosmic rays generated by supernovae carry away a significant portion of the lifetime energy emission of their parent star, making them a plausible mechanism for heating the early universe intergalactic medium (IGM). Following a review of the existing literature on cosmic ray heating, we develop a flexible model of this heating mechanism for use in 3D semi-numerical 21-cm signal simulations and conduct the first investigations of the signatures it imprints on the 21-cm power spectrum and tomographic maps. We find that cosmic ray heating of the IGM is short-ranged, leading to heating clustered around star-forming sites, and a sharp contrast between heated regions of 21-cm emission and unheated regions of absorption. This contrast results in greater small-scale power for cosmic ray heated scenarios compared to what is found for X-ray heating, thus suggesting a way to test the nature of IGM heating with future 21-cm observations. Finally, we find an unexpectedly rich thermal history in models where cosmic rays can only escape efficiently from low-mass halos, such as in scenarios where these energetic particles originate from population III star supernovae remnants. The interplay of heating and the Lyman-Werner feedback in these models can produce a local peak in the IGM kinetic temperature and, for a limited parameter range, a flattened absorption trough in the global 21-cm signal.

Probing the physical properties of the IGM using SRG/eROSITA spectra from blazars

Abstract:Most baryonic matter resides in the intergalactic medium (IGM), a diffuse gas primarily composed of ionized hydrogen and helium, filling the space between galaxies. Observations of such an environment are crucial to better understanding the physical processes involved in such an environment. We present an analysis of the IGM absorption using blazar spectra from the first eROSITA all-sky survey (eRASS1) performed onboard of the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission (SRG) and {\it XMM-Newton} X-ray observations. First, we fitted the continuum spectra using a log-parabolic spectrum model and fixed the Galactic absorption. Then, we included a collisional ionization equilibrium model, namely {\tt IONeq}, to account for the IGM absorption. The column density $N({\rm H})$ and metallicity ($Z$) were set as free parameters. At the same time, the redshift of the absorber was fixed to half the blazar redshift as an approximation of the full line-of-sight absorber. We measured IGM-$N({\rm H})$ for 147 sources for SRG and 10 sources for {\it XMM-Newton}. We found a clear trend between IGM-$N({\rm H})$ and the blazar redshifts which scales as $(1+z)^{1.63\pm 0.12}$. The mean hydrogen density at $z=0$ is $n_{0}=(2.75\pm 0.63)\times 10^{-7}$ cm$^{-3}$. The mean temperature over the redshift range is $\log(T/K)=5.6\pm 0.6$ while the mean metallicity is $Z=0.16\pm 0.09$. We found no acceptable fit using a power-law model for either temperatures or metallicities as a function of the redshift. These results indicate that the IGM contributes substantially to the total absorption seen in the blazar spectra.

Heating of X-Ray Hot Gas in Groups by Blast Waves

Abstract:In order to find the conditions which determine whether X-Ray hot gas in galaxy groups (intragroup gas; IGG) is heated externally or internally, we investigate the evolution of blast waves in galaxy groups growing on a hierarchical clustering scenario. We find that the blast waves driven by quasars are confined in groups and heat the IGG internally at z<~ 1. However, at z>~ 1, they expel the IGG from groups; the expelled gas may fall back into the groups later as externally heated gas. Moreover, this may explain the observed low metal abundance of IGG. For blast waves driven by strong starbursts, the shift of the fate of blast waves occurs at z~ 3. On the other hand, although blast waves driven by weak starbursts do not expel IGG from groups, the heating efficiency decreases at z>~ 3 because of radiative cooling. It will be useful to compare these results with XMM-Newton observations.

Keeping the Universe ionised: photoheating and the high-redshift clumping factor of the intergalactic gas

Abstract:The critical star formation rate density required to keep the intergalactic hydrogen ionised depends crucially on the average rate of recombinations in the intergalactic medium (IGM). This rate is proportional to the clumping factor C = <rho_b^2> / avg(rho_b)^2, where rho_b and avg(rho_b) are the local and cosmic mean baryon density, respectively, and the brackets < > indicate spatial averaging over the recombining gas in the IGM. We perform a suite of cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations that include radiative cooling to calculate the volume-weighted clumping factor of the IGM at redshifts z >= 6. We investigate the effect of photoionisation heating by a uniform ultraviolet background and find that photoheating strongly reduces the clumping factor as the increased pressure support smoothes out small-scale density fluctuations. Even our most conservative estimate for the clumping factor, C = 6, is five times smaller than the clumping factor that is usually employed to determine the capacity of star-forming galaxies to keep the z=6 IGM ionised. Our results imply that the observed population of star-forming galaxies at z = 6 may be sufficient to keep the IGM ionised, provided that the IGM was reheated at z >~ 9 and that the fraction of ionising photons that escape star-forming regions to ionise the IGM is larger than 0.25.

The imprint of the cosmic supermassive black hole growth history on the 21 cm background radiation

Abstract:The redshifted 21 cm transition line of hydrogen tracks the thermal evolution of the neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) at "cosmic dawn," during the emergence of the first luminous astrophysical objects (~100 Myr after the Big Bang) but before these objects ionized the IGM (~400-800 Myr after the Big Bang). Because X-rays, in particular, are likely to be the chief energy courier for heating the IGM, measurements of the 21 cm signature can be used to infer knowledge about the first astrophysical X-ray sources. Using analytic arguments and a numerical population synthesis algorithm, we argue that the progenitors of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) should be the dominant source of hard astrophysical X-rays---and thus the primary driver of IGM heating and the 21 cm signature---at redshifts $z < 20$, if (i) they grow readily from the remnants of Population III stars and (ii) produce X-rays in quantities comparable to what is observed from active galactic nuclei and high-mass X-ray binaries. We show that models satisfying these assumptions dominate over contributions to IGM heating from stellar populations, and cause the 21 cm brightness temperature to rise at $z > 20$. An absence of such a signature in the forthcoming observational data would imply that SMBH formation occurred later (e.g. via so-called direct collapse scenarios), that it was not a common occurrence in early galaxies and protogalaxies, or that it produced far fewer X-rays than empirical trends at lower redshifts, either due to intrinsic dimness (radiative inefficiency) or Compton-thick obscuration close to the source.

Soft X-ray emission from warm gas in IllustrisTNG circum-cluster environments

Abstract:Context. Whereas X-ray clusters are extensively used for cosmology, their idealistic modelling, through the hypotheses of spherical symmetry and hydrostatic equilibrium, are more and more being questioned. Along these lines, the soft X-ray emission detected in tens of clusters with ROSAT was found to be higher than what expected from the idealistic hot gas modelling, pointing to our incomplete understanding of these objects. Aims. Given that cluster environments are at the interface between the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM), warm circum-galactic medium (WCGM) and warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), we aim to explore the relative soft X-ray emission of different gas phases in circum-cluster environments. Method. By using the most massive halos in IllustrisTNG at z=0, we have predicted the hydrodynamical properties of the gas from cluster centers to their outskirts (5 R200), and modelled their X-ray radiation for various plasma phases. Results. First, we found that the radial profile of temperature, density, metallicity and clumpiness of the ICM are in good agreement with recent X-ray observations of clusters. Secondly, we have developed a method to predict the radial profile of soft X-ray emission in different bands, the column density of ions and the X-ray absorption lines (O VIII, O VII, Ne IX, and Ne IX) of warm-hot gas inside and around clusters. Conclusion. The warm gas (in the form of both WCGM and WHIM gas) is a strong emitter in soft X-ray bands, and is qualitatively consistent with the observational measurements. Our results suggest that the cluster soft excess is induced by the thermal emission of warm gas in the circum-cluster environments.

Can winds driven by active galactic nuclei account for the extragalactic gamma-ray and neutrino backgrounds?

Abstract:Various observations are revealing the widespread occurrence of fast and powerful winds in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that are distinct from relativistic jets, likely launched from accretion disks and interacting strongly with the gas of their host galaxies. During the interaction, strong shocks are expected to form that can accelerate non-thermal particles to high energies. Such winds have been suggested to be responsible for a large fraction of the observed extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) in the GeV-TeV range and the diffuse neutrino background in the PeV range, via the decay of neutral and charged pions generated in inelastic $pp$ collisions between protons accelerated by the forward shock and the ambient gas. However, previous studies did not properly account for processes such as adiabatic losses that may reduce the gamma-ray and neutrino fluxes significantly. We evaluate the production of gamma-rays and neutrinos by AGN-driven winds in some detail by modeling their hydrodynamic and thermal evolution, including the effects of their two-temperature structure. We find that they can only account for less than $\sim 30$% of the EGB flux, as otherwise the model would violate the independent upper limit derived from the diffuse isotropic gamma-ray background. If the neutrino spectral index is steep with $\Gamma\gtrsim 2.2$, a severe tension with the isotropic gamma-ray background would arise as long as the winds contribute more than $20$% of the IceCube neutrino flux in the $10-100$TeV range. Nevertheless, at energies $\gtrsim100$~TeV, we find that the IceCube neutrino flux may still be accountable by AGN-driven winds if the spectral index is as small as $\Gamma\sim2.0-2.1$. The detectability of gamma-ray point sources also provides important constraints on such scenarios.

Abstract:The circumgalactic medium (CGM) provides the material needed for galaxy formation and influences galaxy evolution. The hot ($T>10^6K$) CGM is poorly detected around galaxies with stellar masses ($M_*$) lower than $3\times10^{11}M_\odot$ due to the low surface brightness. We used the X-ray data from the first four SRG/eROSITA All-Sky Surveys (eRASS:4). Based on the SDSS spectroscopic survey and halo-based group finder algorithm, we selected central galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts of $z_{\rm spec}<0.2$ and stellar masses of $10.0<\log(M_*/M_\odot)<11.5$ (85,222 galaxies) -- or halo masses of $11.5<\log(M_{\rm 200m}/M_\odot)<14.0$ (125,512 galaxies). By stacking the X-ray emission around galaxies, masking the detected X-ray point sources and carefully modeling the X-ray emission from the unresolved active galactic nuclei (AGN) and X-ray binaries (XRB), we obtain the X-ray emission from the hot CGM. We detected the X-ray emission around MW-mass and more massive central galaxies extending up to the virial radius ($R_{\rm vir}$). We used a $\beta$ model to describe the X-ray surface brightness profile and found $\beta =0.43^{+0.10}_{-0.06}\,(0.37^{+0.04}_{-0.02})$ for MW-mass (M31-mass) galaxies.We estimated the baryon budget of the hot CGM and obtained a value that is lower than the prediction of $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, indicating significant gas depletion in these halos. We extrapolated the hot CGM profile measured within $R_{\rm vir}$ to larger radii and found that within $\approx 3 R_{\rm vir}$, the baryon budget is close to the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology prediction. Our results set a firm footing for the presence of the hot CGM around such galaxies. These measurements constitute a new benchmark for galaxy evolution models and possible implementations of feedback processes therein.

Abstract:The diffuse soft X-ray emissivity from galactic winds is computed during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). We consider two analytic models, a pressure-driven wind and a superbubble model, and a 3D cosmological simulation including gas dynamics from the First Billion Years (FiBY) project. The analytic models are normalized to match the diffuse X-ray emissivity of star-forming galaxies in the nearby Universe. The cosmological simulation uses physically motivated star formation and wind prescriptions, and includes radiative transfer corrections. The models and the simulation all are found to produce sufficient heating of the Intergalactic Medium to be detectable by current and planned radio facilities through 21 cm measurements during the EoR. While the analytic models predict a 21 cm emission signal relative to the Cosmic Microwave Background sets in by $z_{\rm trans} \simeq 8 - 10$, the predicted signal in the FiBY simulation remains in absorption until reionization completes. The 21 cm absorption differential brightness temperature reaches a minimum of $\Delta T \simeq -130$ to $-200$ mK, depending on model. Allowing for additional heat from high mass X-ray binaries pushes the transition to emission to $z_{\rm trans} \simeq 10 - 12$, with shallower absorption signatures having a minimum of $\Delta T \simeq -110$ to $-140$ mK. The 21 cm signal may be a means of distinguishing between the wind models, with the superbubble model favouring earlier reheating. While an early transition to emission may indicate X-ray binaries dominate the reheating, a transition to emission as early as $z_{\rm trans} > 12$ would suggest the presence of additional heat sources.

Abstract:Spatially resolved near-IR and X-ray imaging of the central region of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC 5135 is presented. The kinematical signatures of strong outflows are detected in the [FeII]1.64 \mu m emission line in a compact region at 0.9 kpc from the nucleus. The derived mechanical energy release is consistent with a supernova rate of 0.05-0.1 yr$^{-1}$. The apex of the outflowing gas spatially coincides with the strongest [FeII] emission peak and with the dominant component of the extranuclear hard X-ray emission. All these features provide evidence for a plausible direct physical link between supernova-driven outflows and the hard X-ray emitting gas in a LIRG. This result is consistent with model predictions of starbursts concentrated in small volumes and with high thermalization efficiencies. A single high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) as the major source of the hard X-ray emission although not favoured, cannot be ruled out. Outside the AGN, the hard X-ray emission in NGC 5135 appears to be dominated by the hot ISM produced by supernova explosions in a compact star-forming region, and not by the emission due to HMXB. If this scenario is common to U/LIRGs, the hard X-rays would only trace the most compact (< 100 pc) regions with high supernova and star formation densities, therefore a lower limit to their integrated star formation. The SFR derived in NGC 5135 based on its hard X-ray luminosity is a factor of two and four lower than the values obtained from the 24 \mu m and soft X-ray luminosities, respectively.
