Abstract:Charmonia hadro- and photo-production are analyzed in the framework of the color-octet model taking into account higher-order effects induced by initial-state radiation of gluons. We argue that color-octet matrix elements obtained from Tevatron data might be reconciled with those extracted from HERA data on inelastic $J/\psi$ photoproduction. Finally we estimate cross sections for events with muons from prompt $J/\psi$'s as a background for the B physics programme at LHC experiments.
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the understanding of the production mechanism of charm mesons (i.e., particles containing a charm quark and an anti - charm quark, collectively referred to as "charmonium") in different experimental environments (such as Tevatron, HERA, and LHC). Specifically, the paper focuses on how to explain the inconsistency between the color - octet matrix elements obtained from Tevatron data and those extracted from HERA data by considering the high - order effects of initial - state gluon radiation. In addition, the paper also attempts to estimate the cross - section of muon events from directly produced J/ψ mesons as a background source for the B - physics program in LHC experiments. ### Main contributions of the paper 1. **Solving the inconsistency in the color - octet model**: - The authors believe that the inconsistency between the color - octet matrix elements previously extracted from Tevatron and HERA data may be due to the neglect of the intrinsic transverse momentum of partons (i.e., the influence of initial - state radiation). By introducing this factor, the authors re - evaluated these matrix elements and found that the new values are more consistent with the results of HERA. 2. **Predictions for LHC experiments**: - Based on the color - octet model and an improved PYTHIA simulation, the authors made predictions for the cross - section of directly produced J/ψ mesons in LHC experiments and estimated the cross - section of the resulting muon events. These predictions are of great significance for B - physics research in LHC experiments, especially for the search for the golden - standard decay mode of CP violation \( B_0^d \rightarrow J/\psi K_s \). ### Technical details - **Influence of initial - state radiation**: - The authors used PYTHIA to simulate the influence of multi - gluon emission and found that this would cause events to migrate to the high - \( p_t \) tail, thereby enhancing the differential cross - section in the high - \( p_t \) region. - **Theoretical uncertainties**: - The authors discussed various theoretical uncertainties when extracting color - octet matrix elements, including the choice of energy scale, quark mass, parton distribution functions (PDF), etc. - **Specific results of LHC predictions**: - The authors gave the estimated cross - section values of muon events satisfying specific pseudo - rapidity and transverse - momentum cut conditions in LHC experiments: \[ \sigma(\mu_3) = 622 \text{ nb} \] \[ \sigma(\mu_6) = 52 \text{ nb} \] \[ \sigma(\mu_3\mu_3) = 30 \text{ nb} \] \[ \sigma(\mu_6\mu_3) = 9 \text{ nb} \] ### Conclusion This paper solves the inconsistency problem of the color - octet model between different experimental data by introducing the influence of initial - state radiation and provides important background estimates for B - physics research in LHC experiments. These results are helpful for a better understanding of the dynamics of strong interactions, especially the charmonium production mechanism in high - energy collisions.
