Abstract:We establish a Gaussian upper bound of the heat kernel for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on complete Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below. As applications, we first prove an L^1-Liouville property for non-negative subharmonic functions when the potential function of the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature tensor is of at most quadratic growth. Then we derive lower bounds of the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on closed manifolds. An upper bound of the bottom spectrum is also obtained.

Abstract:We control the number of critical points of a height function arising from the Nash isometric embedding of a compact Riemannian n -manifold M . The L n/2 curvature norm ∥ R ∥ and a similar scalar ∥ R ∥ are introduced and their integral R(M) and R(M) over M . We prove that R(M) is bounded below by a constant depending only on n and the Betti numbers of M . Thus a new sphere theorem is proved by eliminating all i th Betti numbers for i = 1, .… n −1. The emphasis is that our sphere theorem imposes no restriction on the range of curvature.

Abstract:Let M be a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded between two constants -k and K. Then one expects that the heat diffusion in such a manifold behaves like the heat diffusion in Euclidean space. The purpose of this paper is to give a justification of such a statement. In [5], J. Cheeger and the third author found a lower estimate of the heat kernel by comparing it with the heat kernel of the space form whose curvature is the lower bound of the curvature of the manifold. This lower estimate is sharp if we insist the dependence should be on the lower bound of the Ricci curvature alone. It remains to give an upper estimate of the heat kernel. One does not, however, expect to have a comparison theorem for the upper bound because it is more sensitive to the geometry of the manifold. In fact, the heat kernel of the upper hialf space and the heat kernel of the complete hyperbolic manifold with finite volume have quite different behavior. This is reflected by the fact that the Laplacian has no discrete spectrum in the first case while infinite number of discrete eigenvalues may exist in the latter case. What we will prove here is that in any case, the heat kernel has to decay in a manner similar to the Euclidean heat kernel. Thus we will prove that for any constant C > 4, there exists C1 depending on C, T, the bound of the curvature of M and x so that for all t E [0, T]

Abstract:Given any d -dimensional Lipschitz Riemannian manifold (M,g) with heat kernel p , we establish uniform upper bounds on p which can always be decoupled in space and time. More precisely, we prove the existence of a constant C>0 and a bounded Lipschitz function R:M→(0,∞) such that for every x∈M and every t>0 , supy∈Mp(t,x,y)≤Cmin{t,R2(x)}−d/2. This allows us to identify suitable weighted Lebesgue spaces w.r.t. the given volume measure as subsets of the Kato class induced by (M,g) . In the case ∂M≠0̸ , we also provide an analogous inclusion for Lebesgue spaces w.r.t. the surface measure on ∂M . We use these insights to give sufficient conditions for a possibly noncomplete Lipschitz Riemannian manifold to be tamed, i.e. to admit a measure-valued lower bound on the Ricci curvature, formulated in a synthetic sense.

Abstract:We derive a local Gaussian upper bound for the $$f$$ -heat kernel on complete smooth metric measure space $$(M,g,e^{-f}dv)$$ with nonnegative Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature. As applications, we obtain a sharp $$L_f^1$$ -Liouville theorem for $$f$$ -subharmonic functions and an $$L_f^1$$ -uniqueness property for nonnegative solutions of the $$f$$ -heat equation, assuming $$f$$ is of at most quadratic growth. In particular, any $$L_f^1$$ -integrable $$f$$ -subharmonic function on gradient shrinking and steady Ricci solitons must be constant. We also provide explicit $$f$$ -heat kernel for Gaussian solitons.

Abstract:We show that a near‐diagonal lower bound of the heat kernel of a Dirichlet form on a metric measure space with a regular measure implies an on‐diagonal upper bound. If in addition the Dirichlet form is local and regular, then we obtain a full off‐diagonal upper bound of the heat kernel provided the Dirichlet heat kernel on any ball satisfies a near‐diagonal lower estimate. This reveals a new phenomenon in the relationship between the lower and upper bounds of the heat kernel. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:We derive a Harnack inequality for positive solutions of the f-heat equation and Gaussian upper and lower bound estimates for the f-heat kernel on complete smooth metric measure spaces with Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature bounded below. Both upper and lower bound estimates are sharp when the Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature is nonnegative. The main argument is the De Giorgi–Nash–Moser theory. As applications, we prove an $L_f^1$-Liouville theorem for f-subharmonic functions and an $L_f^1$-uniqueness theorem for f-heat equations when f has at most linear growth. We also obtain eigenvalues estimates and f-Green’s function estimates for the f-Laplace operator.

Abstract:This paper is the sequel to our study of heat kernel on Ricci shrinkers [29]. In this paper, we improve many estimates in [29] and extend the recent progress of Bamler [2]. In particular, we drop the compactness and curvature boundedness assumptions and show that the theory of -convergence holds naturally on any Ricci flows induced by Ricci shrinkers.

Abstract:We prove the existence of Sobolev extension operators for certain uniform classes of domains in a Riemannian manifold with an explicit uniform bound on the norm depending only on the geometry near their boundaries. We use this quantitative estimate to obtain uniform Neumann heat kernel upper bounds and gradient estimates for positive solutions of the Neumann heat equation assuming integral Ricci curvature conditions and geometric conditions on the possibly non-convex boundary. Those estimates also imply quantitative lower bounds on the first Neumann eigenvalue of the considered domains.

Abstract:Recently, Qi S.Zhang [26] has derived a sharp Li-Yau estimate for positive solutions of the heat equation on closed Riemannian manifolds with the Ricci curvature bounded below by a negative constant. The proof is based on an integral iteration argument which utilizes Hamilton's gradient estimate, heat kernel Gaussian bounds and parabolic Harnack inequality. In this paper, we show that the sharp Li-Yau estimate can actually be obtained directly following the classical maximum principle argument, which simplifies the proof in [26]. In addition, we apply the same idea to the heat and conjugate heat equations under the Ricci flow and prove some Li-Yau type estimates with optimal coefficients.

As hypotheses, we use the Faber–Krahn inequality, the generalized capacity condition and an upper bound for the integrated tail of the jump kernel. Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions for sub-Gaussian estimates of the heat kernel of a strongly local regular Dirichlet form on a metric measure space. The conditions for two-sided estimates are given in terms of the generalized capacity inequality and the Poincare inequality. The main difficulty lies in obtaining the elliptic Harnack inequality under these assumptions. The conditions for upper bound alone are given in terms of the generalized capacity inequality and the Faber-Krahn inequality.

Abstract:In this paper we prove $\textit{localised, weighted}$ curvature integral estimates for solutions to the Ricci flow in the setting of a smooth four dimensional Ricci flow or a closed $n$-dimensional Kähler Ricci flow. These integral estimates improve and extend the integral curvature estimates shown by the second author in an earlier paper. If the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded in the spatial $L^p$ sense for some $p>2,$ then the estimates imply a uniform bound on the spatial $L^2$ norm of the Riemannian curvature tensor. Stronger integral estimates are shown to hold if one further assumes a weak non-inflating condition. In a sequel paper, we show that in many natural settings, a non-inflating condition holds.

Abstract:We prove the Li-Yau gradient estimate for the heat kernel on graphs. The only assumption is a variant of the curvature-dimension inequality, which is purely local, and can be considered as a new notion of curvature for graphs. We compute this curvature for lattices and trees and conclude that it behaves more naturally than the already existing notions of curvature. Moreover, we show that if a graph has non-negative curvature then it has polynomial volume growth. We also derive Harnack inequalities and heat kernel bounds from the gradient estimate, and show how it can be used to strengthen the classical Buser inequality relating the spectral gap and the Cheeger constant of a graph.

Abstract:We prove that, in a setting of local Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces, a two-sided sub-Gaussian estimate of the heat kernel is equivalent to the conjunction of the volume doubling property, the elliptic Harnack inequality, and a certain estimate of the capacity between concentric balls. The main technical tool is the equivalence between the capacity estimate and the estimate of a mean exit time in a ball that uses two-sided estimates of a Green function in a ball.
